I've got 5 random 128GB SSDs, 10 250GB Samsung 860s, 1 512GB Samsung 860, and a 1TB Samsung 860 in a box right now because I have nowhere to put them

agile jewel
#

Send me some ❤️

clear ferry
#

I currently have 24x8TB + 4x10TB + 16 2TB ssds + 8 600GB in use, plus 4x6TB and 4x2TB not in use

prisma briar
#

I had like 70TB at my peak but I've been trimming down over the years because it's pointless and kind of expensive to maintain that.

#

I quit storing linux ISOs

clear ferry
#

I have quite a large lab, plus a lot of Linux isos, and a software archive of software i occasionally need

prisma briar
#

I have access to tons of hw through work for lab work

#

I used to have a HA cluster set up here with redundant storage at home

clear ferry
#

Can't be bothered running my lab at work, i have access to 30000 servers and storage devices, but I prefer working locally and not having to reserve hardware

steel crag
#

I have slightly less, 4X4TB, 2X2TB, 7X250GB in use

#

not in use... boxes full

prisma briar
#

And a couple Openstack clusters

clear ferry
#

No issues finding it, still need to connect to VPN, and use jump server

prisma briar
#

I keep my work laptop on VPN all the time anyways

clear ferry
#

Ain't nobody got time for that jibba jabba

#

My work laptop doesn't even run corporate image 🫣

prisma briar
#

Yea, my department opted out of the corporate images

#

I went with Fedora on mine.

#

All of our corporate images were Windows 10.

clear ferry
#

I connect to VPN maybe once a month to find some obscure hpux guide

steel crag
#

this is why I had 4 servers in a rack on my desk

#

because I told the boss your fucking lackeys keep fucking up my dev env

#

LMFAO

prisma briar
#

A good chunk of my job is operational management of servers so I'm basically always connected to our jump server and on VPN.

clear ferry
#

I create labs for my colleagues in my homelab, great fun

steel crag
#

they never knew the difference anyway

prisma briar
#

I ran my work OS in a VM on my desktop for a while. I actually got permission for it when I asked.

#

Though that was later rescinded.

steel crag
#

I was one of the most senior engineers, the only "more senior" were in position and pay only

clear ferry
#

My managers just say lallalalalallala whenever I say I run linux

steel crag
#

well considering all the servers I ran were linux or running on linux hosts, I told them making me run windows is counterproductive

#

so the managers complained, the boss basically said let him do what he wants cuz he will only find ways around you

prisma briar
#

I ran Windows for a little bit in my current position because my dock refused to work under Linux but I switched over to Fedora when I got a new laptop with thunderbolt.

clear ferry
#

Never had docking issues on Linux, since 2014 at least

prisma briar
#

Honestly I didn't really notice a difference in productivity. I don't do anything local on my machine anyways, it's basically a web browser and ssh client.

prisma briar
steel crag
#

and he was a partner LMFAO

#

ok apparently one message didnt go thru, it was "my contract stated I didn't report to any managers, only the CTO"

#

so the managers HATED me

prisma briar
#

Sounds like an awful situation, tbh.

#

I dislike working where everyone is hostile.

steel crag
#

I was with the company 10+ years before any of the managers.... so I predated their departments even

#

Lmfao besides you don't but I love to be hated

clear ferry
#

I've never had hostile coworkers, just useless and submissive

steel crag
#

However I have other ideas

#

So they weren't coworkers in my eyes, just annoyances that worked nearby

#

My fellow engineers were coworkers

#

My secretary was my coworker

#

🤣😂

prisma briar
#

You sound insufferable to work with.

steel crag
#

I'm here to do my job tho, not campaign in politics

#

I told them they could always change my contract

#

which the owner quickly dismissed

#

lmfao

prisma briar
#

Everything you've described makes this sound like a shitshow from every party.

steel crag
#

well I made the company 1.2+ million a year for 17 years

#

managers cost money, not make money

prisma briar
#

Lol, okay bud.

steel crag
#

I mean hey, at the end of the day it matters not

#

because my moccasins are not at the foot of your bed

prisma briar
#

You sound like a 12 year old who is trying to pretend he knows what an office looks like.

steel crag
#

well thank you

clear ferry
#

Yuck office

#

Disgusting

steel crag
#

I'm not quite sure why you're upset about my life experience but, hey whatever makes you happy

prisma briar
#

I'm not upset by it, I'm just commenting on how absurd this all sounds.

clear ferry
#

It would sound absurd to the American office worker smile

steel crag
#

Also, field engineers that only need dispatching don't want to be in their own office anyway

#

I want to be in other peoples offices billing, not in mine arguing

clear ferry
#

I just prefer sitting in my garage arguing with customers

prisma briar
#

I don't deal with customers. It's great.

#

Been almost 5 years since I took a customer call.

clear ferry
#

I deal with them enough to make them give me access to the system

#

So I can fix the stuff they broke

steel crag
#

Normally my customers are IT departments that can't figure out their butthole from their elbow

#

😂

clear ferry
#

Sounds about right

prisma briar
#

Almost my entire company is IT to one level or another.

steel crag
#

internal customers are the worst.

#

because mostly they should know better.

#

half my job was fixing things other people thought they knew how to do

#

internally that is

prisma briar
#

I guess my internal customers would be the product managers and the systems administration team under my department.

#

But our systems administration team is pretty good about solving small problems on their own.

clear ferry
#

Thankfully I don't have any of those

prisma briar
#

I have a good working relationship with basically all my managers. My boss has been quick to intervene the few times I've got stupid requests in, too.

steel crag
#

well my boss intervened all the time with mine but like I said he was an owner

clear ferry
#

I'm on a first name basis with 5 levels of management above me, but they only contact me if it is urgent, except my direct manager once a month

prisma briar
#

I can only think of one manager I work with that asks me to drop everything and doesn't really seem to understand I don't work solely under him. I generally don't.

#

There's only two positions between me and the owner of my company. I used to be coworkers with one of them.

steel crag
#

there was 1 degree of seperation from me and the owners

#

one of the owners was the CTO, and he hoped I'd replace him

#

when he started the company it was only me and him. that's it.

#

hence why I didn't report to any managers

prisma briar
#

I was 10 when my company was founded.

steel crag
#

I was ... 19 I think

#

yup 19

#

went from 2 engineers to 17

#

the support staff and managers were added later LOL

prisma briar
#

I was working random jobs and going to college when I was 19. Dropped out, ended up overseeing a few fast food joints, then finally decided to get back into IT when I was 26.

steel crag
#

yeah I dropped out of college at 18

prisma briar
#

We don't graduate HS until 18 here

steel crag
#

oh, well they changed it here too now

clear ferry
#

I was -63

steel crag
#

but I turned 17 just before graduation

clear ferry
#

I never bothered with college, i did one year prep and said fuck it

steel crag
#

I would have been just turning 16 but I was held back a year

prisma briar
#

From what I can tell college is a scam for a good chunk of IT.

steel crag
#

yup

prisma briar
#

I spent so long as a kid trying to get my parents to see that, but nooo, I had to go to college. I should have just ignored them and gone straight to work.

steel crag
#

a cisco cert would command more salary than a bachelors LOL

prisma briar
#

Even when I was working at fast food places I was making pretty decent money, it was just shit work with shit people.

#

I got an MCSA cert when I was in highschool

steel crag
#

I had like 4 Msft certs before I left high school

#

I think they were MCP?

steel crag
prisma briar
#

MCP is for passing any cert, yea

#

I also got some client support certification for Windows Vista with the same tests I used for my MCSA.

clear ferry
#

laughs in holding 21 certs

prisma briar
#

The MCSA itself was four tests

steel crag
#

Atx I have about 21 certs in Avaya alone LMFAO

clear ferry
#

Did 17 last year

#

4 so far this year

#

Yuck avaya

steel crag
#

we still call MCSE must consult someone educated here

prisma briar
#

Other than the MCSA I have an A+ because my school paid for it.

steel crag
#

needed to do them for my cisco stuff

#

I also still have Ericsson certs Atx

clear ferry
#

Yikes

steel crag
#

so don't yuck at the Avaya, my first PBXs were Ericsson

prisma briar
#

I don't remember them getting into LDAP at all beyond "Here's the GUI to control your objects and reset passwords"

steel crag
#

atx this better not be a penis pic in my DM

steel crag
#

LLDP is fun, LDAP is easy

clear ferry
#

Fucking mcsa LDAP query questions

#

Give me ptsd

prisma briar
#

Did they add them to MCSA?

clear ferry
#

For the 2003 at least

prisma briar
#

I remember most of the stuff I did was focused on DNS and client administration

#

Hmm, maybe you took different tests than me. Mine is on 2003 too.

clear ferry
#

Hey, windows 2008 mcsa still had questions about dial back, because murica Internet is broken

prisma briar
#

I got mine like right before Server 08 came out

#

08 was when they tried that convoluted mcitp cert system

#

I got my A+ in 2010, it still had a couple questions about dumb terminals on it.

clear ferry
#

All the + exams are pure bullshit

#

I have a n+ btw

steel crag
#

I got mine in like 04/05 and there was still token ring and ISA

prisma briar
clear ferry
#

I did it for my previous employer

#

No study

#

Just passed it, ridiculous questions

steel crag
#

lmfao same I took A+ and N+ back to back no studying

prisma briar
#

I think the only test I studied for was the DNS test for my MCSA. I didn't study at all for my A+.

clear ferry
#

Like "what command does ping other machines?"
A ping
B netstat
C cmd

steel crag
#

it's C right?

prisma briar
#

I'm confident I could pass Linux+, Security+, and Network+ if I wanted to waste a few hundred dollars and a couple days.

clear ferry
#

Only certification I've ever studied for was CKA, and i only bothered doing half the course

prisma briar
steel crag
#

I studied for part I and II of CCNA

#

and for my cisco voip certs

clear ferry
#

Did not study for ccna, passed it,.did not study for 400-701, failed it

prisma briar
#

Oh god, the worst thing I've had to do so far in IT was manage a PBX.

steel crag
#

the avaya stuff I did half asleep cuz I'd do those before work

clear ferry
#

Or was it 300-401

#

Damn Cisco stupid names

steel crag
#

high availability PBXs

clear ferry
#

I haven't touched a PBX since 2004, and thankfully most of Norway moved to VoIP in 2006

prisma briar
#

I inherited an Asterisk server at my current job and had to manage it for ~1 year before I moved to another position

#

We've since moved to a cloud provider

steel crag
#

ATX yeah but voip still needs a PBX

clear ferry
#

Sure, but when you say pbx, i think of the physical box nonsense

#

That is long since retired

steel crag
#

well the form factor has changed, the functionality has not

clear ferry
#

Just like FM, we shipped all our FM antennas to africa

prisma briar
#

I managed a SIP/DAHDI call router

steel crag
#

still need SBCs etc

clear ferry
#

And now we are digging up all copper from the ground

steel crag
#

you don't know pain until you know h.323

clear ferry
#

I havent seen an office environment with desk phones since 2014 probably, except for military sites

prisma briar
#

I still have a FreePBX box set up at home I have HA set to call out through if there's an alarm

steel crag
wet wyvern
#

I work in telecoms so I see a few :P

prisma briar
wet wyvern
#

I actually have a physical Teams handset on my desk right now!

clear ferry
clear ferry
steel crag
prisma briar
#

We had Cisco spa 303's on all of our desks at work up until Covid hit.

wet wyvern
clear ferry
#

I didn't know the UK was third world

steel crag
#

I would have to make sure all my prompts were in that format

prisma briar
wet wyvern
#

Voip is not third world! :P

prisma briar
#

Getting so close to having a fully self-hosted AI assistant.

#

I set up Whisper (voice recognition AI model) and tried forwarding it to a few llama-derived models with a custom prompt to make it output commands I could look for and have HA execute. I was having moderate success with it but decided I was just going to wait for a polished solution to come out.

#

I kept having it work fine with like 5 lights but when I gave it all of my lights it'd get confused and stop being able to report their state correctly or would put incorrect entity names in commands.

molten atlas
prisma briar
#

You'll probably have better luck asking in one of the other channels.

#

Though esp32's are also rather easy to work with and cheaper than an RPi.

molten atlas
prisma briar
#

I've been phasing all my RPis out for ESP32/ESP8266s. Other than one RPi I have set up to emulate an MT-32 I've replaced them all.

molten atlas
#

I'm using the esp's in many places also, maybe i should just be looking for a ESP32-cam instead.

steel crag
#

what is with all this sensible conversation in here

#

get off my grass, dang kids and quit making all that noise

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze what a trash state! can't even get the good stuff lol

midnight adder
#

can i run HA on a rpi zero w?

prisma briar
#

Can? Yes. Should? Probably not.

#

It's going to suck for anything beyond a really basic setup.

forest edge
#

not enough ram to do anything with it really

static schooner
#

just "no, can't"

midnight adder
#

figured i'd ask, they work for certain 3d printing applications

forest edge
prisma briar
#

Yea. there's info on how to do it online and forum posts by people doing it

midnight adder
#

if anyone is interested, they're in stock here: https://www.pishop.us/product/raspberry-pi-zero-w/ limit 2

#

i'll report back when I put HA on it 😆

prisma briar
#

glhf

static schooner
#

there's no point saying that it's possible when you know that it'll blow up

forest edge
#

would have to be very limited specific use case

static schooner
#

I'm all about actually useful advice

midnight adder
#

the real use case for me is freeing up a pi4 8gb

prisma briar
#

A Pi Zero W is really really weak compared to a pi 4

midnight adder
#

i get that, but it will run klipper/fluidd, which is what my 4 is doing

forest edge
#

ops didn't mean to reply to that

prisma briar
#

He posted a link to the 1st gen zero which is based on the first raspberry pi

forest edge
#

yea i know. just saying

prisma briar
#

Which was meant to be a weak low-cost device in 2014.

#

And hasn't aged particularly gracefully.

midnight adder
#

pretty cool that it can run a 3d printer and web interface

forest edge
#

i keep mentioning in here the need for a "lite" version of haos just for the zero's

#

I would use it

prisma briar
#

Mine couldn't run octoprint. Constant blobs everywhere from it pausing.

midnight adder
#

yeah octoprint is trash

prisma briar
#

It's still not exactly a demanding application.

forest edge
#

i run octoprint on a rpi 2 lol

midnight adder
#

klipper with the fluidd interface is great on a zero w

prisma briar
#

Anyways, Home Assistant is going to be heavier than that.

midnight adder
#

but my pi4 8gb should run it fine?

prisma briar
#

The pi4 is a lot nicer than the zero w

#

Yea, the pi4 will run it fine

#

I know flops aren't everything but that's a massive jump in performance.

forest edge
#

you planning to use the zero or the rpi4 for kilpper?

midnight adder
#

zero for klipper rpi4 for haos

prisma briar
#

Lol at the apple 2, 1.33E-7 GFLOPS

forest edge
#

i thought the zero would be too slow for that since klipper is basically sending each instruction

steel crag
#

you're too slow for that

midnight adder
forest edge
steel crag
#

it's nearly done

#

had 2 pigeons get lost, so had retries

forest edge
midnight adder
#

yes

forest edge
#

ah be damn

midnight adder
#

its fine

#

top shows no more than like 30% utilization max

steel crag
forest edge
#

I haven't tried kipper but reading about it just made it sound like the zero would choke out

midnight adder
#

and fluidd offloads all the work on the browser

forest edge
#

and of course they always recommend the rpi4 for that like everything else

midnight adder
#

zero is fine, 1 rpi4 could probably run 100 printers

forest edge
prisma briar
#

It should just be reading text from an sd card and spitting it out a serial (or serial over usb) connection

forest edge
#

well it's a little more than that

steel crag
midnight adder
#

klipper offloads all the "thinking" tasks to the rpi and just produces timed move commands for the steppers

#

usb is basically necessary for the data rate

steel crag
#

pffftttttt

prisma briar
#

That sounds horribly inefficient.

steel crag
#

115k should be enough for anything

prisma briar
#

640k of RAM is enough for anyone!

midnight adder
#

its been a while since i've read the docs

prisma briar
#

idk about every printer but the ones I've interacted with all just used an onboard USB -> Serial adapter anyways.

steel crag
midnight adder
#

i dunno, i'm a good boy and followed the directions

forest edge
#

kilpper just replaces the marlin on the printer. the idea is the extra cpu and ram help make print for efficient and reliable. also speed has to do with with the instruction to the stepper motors but i think that issue was resolves in the last 2 years or so

prisma briar
#

I always assumed klipper still ran on gcode or something similar

forest edge
#

it does, your just moving the os from the onboard board to the external rpi etc

#

and sending data via the usb

prisma briar
#

That just sounds like more points of failure, tbh.

forest edge
#

you still install the bridge on the onboard tho

midnight adder
#

it allows for PLUGINS!

#

and its faster

forest edge
#

has to do with the extra ram on the rpi

prisma briar
#

I've never wanted my printer to do anything Marlin couldn't do.

forest edge
#

everyone i know who switched to klipper loves it i just hadn't done it

midnight adder
#

i have a printer that can do a shitty benchy in around 12 minutes

#

following the speedboat rules

#

i don't think marlin could handle that

prisma briar
#

I have an Ender 3 with an SKR 3 in it.

midnight adder
prisma briar
#

I mostly replaced the stock board for quieter motors. That stock board was so obnoxious.

midnight adder
prisma briar
#

I have dual z rods on mine and a direct drive for the extruder

midnight adder
#

this is way better than z rods, i took those off 😉

prisma briar
#

And the bigtreetech touchscreen for it, can't remember the model number

forest edge
#

maybe it's the plugins for klipper that make the zero a bad choice

prisma briar
#

I had a lot of issues with one z rod, but two has been pretty solid so far.

midnight adder
#

one rod is okay if you have the idler tension set properly

#

two rods fixes that

prisma briar
#

My e3 looks like someone barfed wires all over it, but it prints just fine so I don't really care.

midnight adder
#

belts make it waaaaay better

prisma briar
#

I couldn't get one rod to work reliably after the direct drive mod was installed

#

Too heavy I assume

forest edge
#

I changed the board on mine but that was as far as it went

#

watched a dude print one of those starwars helmets on a pure stock ender 3 and the thing came out pristine

prisma briar
#

I only got the direct drive for printing TPU, and I only got the second Z axis for the direct drive.

#

It tends to bunch up and clog in long bowden tubes

forest edge
#

add some grease lol

#

bought mine to make petg parts. don't think i'll be venturing down any other paths

#

sure as hell not messing with abs

prisma briar
#

I tried a spool of ABS, hated it.

midnight adder
#

abs is tameable

#

a cardboard box goes a long way

#

and abs juice will make it absolutely stick the whole print

prisma briar
#

I have an enclosure for mine. a fire retardant tent basically.

midnight adder
#

abs juice (abs dissolved in acetone) is the only way i've found to get the entirety of every part to stay down

prisma briar
#

I've done PVA, PLA, PETG, ABS, and TPU/TPE on my Ender 3. I got there in the end with all of them but found ABS to be not worth it and PETG to be mildly more difficult than the rest.

midnight adder
#

and i run like up to 30% cooling fan

#

abs is worth it if you print printer parts, the heat resistance is key

prisma briar
#

Heh, I replaced my cooling fan with a pointed blower fan from a projector. If I run it above about 40% the printer thinks it's hitting a thermal runaway and powers down.

forest edge
#

i hit the ground running with petg then tried pla and was like wtf.. didn't have to mess with nothing lol

#

pla is crazy easy to print with but wouldn't use it for anything other than a throw away figurine or something

midnight adder
#

i print mostly guns, i go through a lot of 3dfuel pla pro

forest edge
#

like toy guns?

midnight adder
#

they kinda look like toys

forest edge
#

cause noway pla could handle those actual 3d printed ones

midnight adder
#

the boom happens in metal

forest edge
#

still the vibration would make the layers seperate imo lol

midnight adder
#

1000 rounds out of an ar15 lower

forest edge
#

then what? it disintegrates?

midnight adder
#

eventually they break, pla seems to age and weaken

forest edge
#

considering just leaving it on the desk would cause it to fall apart after a few months i have no doubt

#

why would you use pla?

midnight adder
#

because its cheap, easy to print, and good enough

forest edge
#

I've seen those 3d printed guns in videos. mostly hand guns and a few rifles. i just assumed those were all abs

midnight adder
#

petg shifts over time, abs works if you can keep it on the plate, glass fiber is sometimes used

#

nylon is the real answer, but most people aren't setup for it

#

the orca™️ available for download today!

forest edge
#

i saw someone print a carbon fiber part for some industrial thing. i bet that would be a good choice

#

the whole concept of 3d printed guns is nuts

midnight adder
#

carbon fiber nylon is the answer

forest edge
#

reminds me of those movies where a dude made a pistol out of clear acrylic and snuck it past metal detectors to assassinate someone

midnight adder
#

that movie got a stupid law passed

forest edge
#

lol

midnight adder
forest edge
#

two things.. like i said the concept is nuts, and I am not sure I would trust the reliability of the weapon not somehow breaking and injuring myself lol

midnight adder
#

its definitely important to understand the function, failure modes, and risks involved

forest edge
#

has anyone died from it? not something i regularly look up

midnight adder
#

not that i'm aware of and most designs are generally safe with enough metal containing the explosion

#

commercial glocks are just glass fiber reinforced nylon

forest edge
#

yea but that's just the expansion. only plastic is containing the kickback

#

I wouldn't try and fire one lol

#

although a plastic dillinger would be kind of neat

midnight adder
#

its called "The Harlot"

#

.22lr

forest edge
#

oh shit they made one

#

that is kind of neat lol

midnight adder
#

the group i'm in released a 37mm "signal device"

forest edge
#

the lunchbox sidearm lol

midnight adder
#

our signal device uses a chain link fence post for a barrel and fires 37mm flares

forest edge
#

lol

midnight adder
#

it has a printed breach face, but the flares are low pressure so its fine

steel crag
#

I've ordered a few wind chimes myself

forest edge
#

are ghost guns a thing in the bahamas?

midnight adder
#

they're a thing everywhere

steel crag
#

I'm sorry your message could not be delivered.

#

Who said anything about guns?

#

I enjoy wind chimes

midnight adder
#

they sound so peaceful

forest edge
#

yea sounds about right. how could they even download the gcode to print one? lol

midnight adder
#

odysee hosts all the gun files now

#

and you generate your own gcode

steel crag
#

Yeah we can't download anything

forest edge
#

asking him to pull up a website is a no go lol

#

I would "maybe" consider firing the harlot. 22 is nothing but anything bigger I would hard pass

steel crag
#

You clearly have never made a bicycle gooseneck into a windchime

forest edge
#

don't you just hang shells from a string and let them clank?

midnight adder
#

a chime

forest edge
#

those 3d printed? they don't look it

midnight adder
#

no, thats the metal that contains the boom

#

add 3d printing to make it functional

forest edge
#

wait, you actually hung that outside?

midnight adder
#

no thats from maf-arms website

forest edge
#

oh lol

midnight adder
#

and they say string is customer provided

steel crag
#

Sonoma you have some reading to do as to what a wind chime really is

steel crag
#

Hurricane proof

#

Safetythird you think he figured it out yet?

forest edge
steel crag
#

Sonoma may be on high speed internet but his brain is on dial up

steel crag
#

My brain is somewhere between the internet backbone and ARPAnet

forest edge
#

oh yea i'm not really a big gun person. I have a bunch that's been passed down to me that I keep cleaned and ready for the worst case but aside from that I really don't mess with them or even look them up

steel crag
#

Works, should prolly upgrade, but would break half the world if it did

A woman walked into a Petco carrying a young raccoon and wanted to get its nails trimmed, Maine wildlife officials said.
While the raccoon was in the store, several customers kissed the juvenile creature and “handled” it the afternoon of May 23 in Auburn, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
A Petco manager asked the woman to leave with the raccoon, as “Petco does not trim raccoon nails,” wildlife officials said in a May 25 news release.

#

Looking at options for our well

steel crag
#

I was thinking of using a float switch for my cistern

#

so if it goes below a certain level, it turns on the well pumps to pull some up

forest edge
#

just add two contacts and when the water level drops below them it breaks the connection thus triggering whatever you want to happen. like those flood detectors but in reverse

steel crag
#

but then I don't get to make a fun rheostat with a float actuator

forest edge
#

f moving parts

steel crag
#

or have to have electricity in the water lol

forest edge
#

i mean you could use a single AA

steel crag
#

meh

#

I already need some flood detectors for the ground in there incase a pipe bursts/breaks

#

i might just use one of my rpi's

#

and have few sensors on one device

forest edge
#

you could use the pi too the 3v gpio would work lol

#

i've literally seen people just dangle two wires at same length that just dangle in the water. i personally wouldn't do that. i would attach them to the side of the wall but still. stupid simple

steel crag
#

that way I could have a level sensor, a flood sensor and a motion sensor for the light on the cistern

forest edge
#

steel crag
clear ferry

forest edge
rapid plinth
#

It's a finished bedroom ceiling, but unfinished attic with direct access to the back of the drywall. It's more of a, do I just drill a hole in the drywall or should I "finish" or "seal" it somehow?

forest edge
#

oh so you literally want the cat to be poking through the ceiling

#

you just drill a hole slightly smaller than the cable and stick it through. maybe add some chalking around it but nothing fancy

rapid plinth
#

well, the AP itself will be covering up the hole. But I'm wondering about thermals and whether I should be worried about it being an ingress vector for unwanted whatevers

forest edge
#

that's what the chalking is for

#

they do make grommets for that but realistically they add nothing but an appearance to something your covering up anyways

#

pro's drill holes then literally stuff as much silicone or latex chalking in said hole to come out both sides.. for reference lol

clear ferry
#

Why not just stick the AP in the attic like a sane person?

forest edge
#

to pass rg6 through an exterior wall to the outside I added a trailer connector just to make it look better also give it a breaking off point should someone clip the line but it was extra work for nothing really

rapid plinth
#

My attic is fully exposed to the elements

static schooner
#

caulking

clear ferry
#

That's called an exterior wall, not an attic 🤔

forest edge
rapid plinth
#

well, mostly. The insulation is blown-in sitting directly on top of the ground floor ceiling, so I can't put it above the ceiling, it'll burn itself out

rapid plinth
#

but if I mount it to the rafters, it's exposed to higher-than-outside temperatures due to dark roof and lack of insulation

#

and it's not an outdoor AP

clear ferry
#

You Americans and your weird buildings

forest edge
#

yea putting an ap in the attic that isn't climate controled is a bad idea

#

hell my attic easily hits 150-170 degrees during summer

I've had servers, swithches and access points in attics in 4 houses the last 20 years

forest edge
#

he also lives in the arctic tundra

rapid plinth
#

oh, yeah, the AP will also be subjected to 0F or lower at times

#

I think we hit -25F (-31C) last time the polar vortex came into town

clear ferry
#

My attic is around -7c - +40c year round, with -35c - +35c outdoor temperature

rapid plinth
#

I haven't been tracking temperatures in my attic, but I expect it to average 15-20F above outdoor temperature

clear ferry
#

My parents attic stays warmer than that, but they only get -12c in winter

#

Used to have 4 servers, 3 switches and two access points in their attic

rapid plinth
#

so anything that goes up there needs to tolerate ambient temperatures in excess of 120F (~49C)

clear ferry
#

Normal enterprise access points from the last 15 years tolerate -40f to +160f

#

I just checked the last three ones I've had

rapid plinth
#

I wanted to put a PoE switch up there, but the more I reflect on it I think it's just not worth avoiding the labor of running a few dozen cables through a conveniently placed closet

clear ferry
#

Switches can be less tolerant, the switch i have does 32f - 113f

#

But it worked fine in -7c
