Yeah. It's not that

#

I've been deep through all the issues on github since it of course was the first one I opened...

#

It doesn't even turn on. Except if set to turn on on power on. Then it goes on and then off immediately.

I'd like to see the latest firmware version, but I can't because I use deCONZ at the moment (No idea how to OTAU)

prisma briar
#

My desktop is black with icons disabled.

#

Mostly so I can hit winkey+d and minimize everything to not have anything burn in on my oled.

clear ferry
#

Y'all and your burn ins

prisma briar
#

I'm at 5368 hours on my OLED screen and still no burn-in.

#

With how much I've left Discord and browsers up I figured I'd have some by now.

clear ferry
#

I probably have 25k on my old plasma, never saw burn in on that , probably won't on my current oled either

#

Then again, i use neither for desktops

prisma briar
#

My dad had some LCD TV around 2010 that burned a toast notification in, that's the only non-CRT I've ever seen burn-in on.

#

That TV was only a couple months old too, he was able to just return it.

bitter pecan
#

my HS has flat screens everywhere with a clock on em

#

they're on 24/7

#

you can imagine the carnage

prisma briar
#

Most LCDs shouldn't really care about that

bitter pecan
#

those did lol

#

after 3 years

prisma briar
#

My HS just had normal clocks around

#

There were projectors/smart boards in each classroom and a flatscreen in the cafeteria they displayed announcements on

#

Well, that was in the HS they opened my senior year. The one before just had CRTs on carts.

#

That old building also had insufficient fire suppression.

clear ferry
#

Never seen burn in in my life actually, my old CRTs and LCDs have been powered on 24/7 since 95, with varying degrees of screen savers on or not

bitter pecan
#

my phone had it

#

old samsung s7

prisma briar
#

I remember seeing it on library computers

#

Oh, I guess my Pixel XL burned in the back/home/menu buttons

#

Forgot about that

bitter pecan
#

mine had the time bar and notifications burned it

prisma briar
#

The public libraries around here used green phosphor monochrome displays until way after they had any reason to that had burn-in

clear ferry
#

I've never seen a green phosphor display outside of the hp ux terminals

prisma briar
#

They still had them in like 2010.

#

Just dumb serial clients people could look up books on

clear ferry
#

Wtf

prisma briar
#

They also had actual computers that could look up books just fine, just only a couple of them

clear ferry
#

Don't think those could have been used anywhere since the early 90s here

prisma briar
#

I used to be able to telnet into our library and access the same interface those terminals accessed

#

It was like an advertised thing they had

clear ferry
#

That's some old school shit, I used to follow my dad to university in the mid 90s and by then they already had pretty good Internet connections

prisma briar
#

We had ISDN in the 90s, like 80Kb/s on a good day.

#

Got cable in the early 2000s

clear ferry
#

We got isdn at home in 96, but the university already had broadband by then, we got docsis in 98

prisma briar
#

ofc back then servers were so slow that that connection was mostly wasted.

#

I remember signing up for free dial-up services when my dad kicked me off the internet as a punishment. There were a few different services that'd give you 10h/mo of dial-up for free and it was a lot easier to make new accounts back then.

clear ferry
#

We had free dialup between 22-06 every day between 94-97 istr

prisma briar
#

Later on I lined a bowl with foil and put a usb wifi dongle in the middle and was able to get on the neigbor across the street's wifi

clear ferry
#

From what I could find my local university had 2Mbps in 1996

#

And most had 100 by the end of the 90s

#

My university had dual 155Mbit in 2003

prisma briar
#

Now speeds are absurd. We have multiple 100Gbit connections for our datacenter space.

#

And I can get 2Gbps to my house if I was willing to use Comcast's provided modems instead of my own

last cedar
#

@clear ferry you need to look up "marsvinsbilarna" on Netflix... omg

#

Best show I have ever seen

clear ferry
#

10Gbit for residential has been a thing for quite a few years

#

I did work with cross country 4Gbit over a decade ago

prisma briar
#

I think I can get 10Gbit from Comcast now too, but I'd probably have to get a new line ran to my house

clear ferry
#

They just replace my gpon with xgpon

prisma briar
#

I'm on coax still

#

docsis 3.1

clear ferry
#

Yuck

prisma briar
#

It's crazy how much they're getting out of shitty cables.

clear ferry
#

Docsis seems to be the next big milking cow in the us

#

Not sure if any other countries are betting on it

prisma briar
#

Supposedly they're getting 10Gb out of Docsis 4

clear ferry
#

Docsis is afaik only used in inner city apartment buildings still and if your current docsis breaks outside of the city they tell you to order ftth

prisma briar
#

Cable modems won because most people had cable TV at the time and it was an easy sell.

#

Cable providers were already replacing the old thin coax from the 80s with thicker stuff for compatibility with things like On Demand TV and high channel count packages so it just sorta worked

#

There's a lot of houses around here wired with thinner VHF/UHF coax to each room that has been functionally useless since the early 2000s. The house I was renting before I got my current place had each room wired like that.

#

Cable providers quit sending signals compatible with built-in tuners around then and switched to requiring cable boxes for all plans.

#

I wish they went with a differential pair instead of just shielded coax, personally.

#

Could've reused my old pointless phone jacks if they did that

clear ferry
#

My neighbourhood doesn't even have cable TV, was never built here, was sattelite tv until dsl came in the late 00s and sattelite for some, but ffth came in 2015, but linear tv has been dying for well over a decade already

prisma briar
#

Cable TV is dying pretty fast here too, but the infrastructure is already there and works for internet so it's still in use.

#

Satellite TV has always been a thing too, but when I had it it was constantly out due to snow on the dish.

#

I'd have to go brush the dish off to get a signal back

clear ferry
#

I'm guessing they are pulling all coax out of the ground now alongside twisted pair, but I'm actually not sure

prisma briar
#

They don't pull old wire out here, they just cut the ends off and leave it buried

#

At least all the wire between the distro boxes and houses

I just had a drive die in my RAID 6 on my home server. They're all 4TB Western Digital Green drives I bought about 9 years ago. RAID is running fine right now, I'm just shopping around for drives and trying to decide if I want to go up in size.
I see NAS drives are popular thing right now.
Anyone else in here run their own not-data-center-busy home server with a RAID, and if so in this modern age do you care much about grabbing a "NAS" labeled drive or not?

last cedar
forest edge
glacial knot
#

yea, I didn't like my greens much

#

I just run my NAS on SSDs, no issues with spinning rust behaviour

forest edge
#

does that mean it equals out in the end by the ravaged helping speed up the rate of the planet becoming uninhabitable?

glacial knot
#

backblaze has pretty good analysis online

forest edge
#

the problem with that thinking is those not taking in the part that the apocalypse has to happen first before anything would be changed to help "prevent" one heh

glacial knot
#

I disagree on the only, but they are the ones that could actually use their weight to change things if they directed them altruistically

forest edge
#

what I mean is, there are too many "ravaged" people on the planet, those people don't care about the planet, if anything being "ravaged" just entices the act of making it all end faster. Those doing the ravaging may survive the aftermath, but what did they survive to live in? a hellish planet most likely..a poetic cycle kind of lol

#

a lot easier to change the minds of a fraction of billions of people than billions of people, which is why I said it takes the end to happen before you can convince people to try and prevent the end

#

but they will get theirs in the end

#

now if we had discovered another livable utopia planet that is reachable then I guess the rich would get away with it lol

#

good thing @umbral cliff isn't around to touch on this haha

glacial knot
#

private bunkers are en vogue. Especially since corona isolation started

forest edge
#

you won't want to survive the aftermath

#

so i wouldn't worry about it

#

saving the planet only aids those who have their foot on your throat

#

the end is coming regardless

#

it's inevitable

#

maybe not within your lifetime

#

but it's inevitable

#

they don't teach that in schools?

#

hell they taught the facts of the chances of all kinds of thing ending the earth when i went to school

#

talking about what happens after whatever fucks up the planet, regardless if it's man made or natural

#

you don't have to tag on every response btw lol

#

inevitable is just part of it. that's just scientific fact rather it be within 50 years or a billion the earth will no longer in some form or another not be able to sustain human life. accepting that is not depressing or anything. just fact of life. However the earth is already shifting right, we hadn't been able to "change our ways" yet, nothing indicates we will be able to in the future either. sooo put 2 and 2 together

#

most people on this planet literally don't care about pollution or waste or anything that aids the current climate change we already have. As you keep pointing out only a few rich control everything and everyone knows that so why would the "ravage" care? there is no reason to aid the rich to prolong thier raid and before anything CAN change, something drastic.. like the end of the earth has to happen to shift whats already in motion

#

we've known about what damages our planet for generations now, we've known about the hierarchy and the "%1" the whole time.. nothing has changed, shown any sign of changing this whole time. I get your hopeful and all but reality is reality lol

#

damages to our planet from pollution to garbage to killing wildlife and forest etc was taught to my parents in grade school

#

we're talking over 100 years of people openly knowing about the state of our planet and nothing being changed lol

#

wasn't it like 30 years ago they said if we didn't do massive drastic change that climate change would be irreversible? welcome to 2023 lol

#

well who knows.. when the temps outside reach on average of 100F maybe people will "deal" with the rich lol

but then again, it might take to the point we can cook our chicken next to a open window l;ol

I will grant you that there are cheap cheap models of drives out there lol but on the average I think they are all pretty much made around the same quality/way. As I always grew up being taught the longevity of HD style drives comes from the speed 6400 and lower were targeted as "NAS" drives but these days they slap "NAS" on all kinds of drives with all kinds of speeds. Not even sure you can still get drives that around 5400rpm

Partly.
If money inflates each year by 2% and you demand a 2% pay raise each year, you end up with less money.

forest edge

your trying to "hope" away an issue that is so buried, so connected that literally makes everything we know and do work without it fucking everything else up

Fine, I'll use their app to turn it off, that's like the one thing it can do. Nope, it loads to a full page error stating it paused because the door was opened and wasn't resumed, only option the stupid app gives me is to contact support or back out to the main menu.

Generally you can't control it at all unless a remote control option has been activated that resets at every power-on of the appliance, but the one option it still exposes is power off when it's on and idle.

forest edge
#

Control from an "Off" state is always going to be limited when it comes to things like washer and dryer. however once a cycle starts you have just as much control over the unit as you do at the machine pretty much with LG atleast

Dishwasher is an exception where you can start a cycle at any point etc, it makes more sense for that appliance

Then it's not full. Try the calibration

So your complaint is just with it saying it's full, not actually being full

but you said you got days worth before recalibrating

so that confuses me

the poop level only comes up to half the height of the drawer and is usually mostly all in the center rather than spread out

but yeah, I don't know why it's taking so long

I'd rather not buy a $50 ramp just to replace it with a $60 ramp in 2 months, but yeah...

#

Supposedly, that's what the USB port in the top of the unit is for

#

Another thing the LitterRobot could do with: An audible alert/alarm

#

I had to make an automation to have Alexa call out (hourly, during daylight hours) when the LR4 needs more litter, or needs to be emptied, because none of us check the lights on the unit, and notifications from the app are incredibly unreliable

#

If it could just beep every once in a while, on its own, it'd solve a lot of problems <_<

I've honestly thought about plugging an ESP8266 dev board into the hidden USB port so I could add features, like a piezo speaker, to the LitterRobot

#

Piezo speaker, VOC sensor (air quality), maybe a camera (would require an ESP32 rather than an ESP8266, but meh, not that big a difference)

#

But I already solved the biggest issue by having HomeAssistant monitor the LitterRobot, and issue voice alerts via a nearby Echo Dot.

#

Why isn't there an Alexa skill for this directly from Whisker? Who knows!

forest edge
#

inexperienced dev department. the shear amount of bugs and issues they are having suggests they bit off more than they can chew. I submitted a help ticket to them 3 days ago and my only response so far was the automated they are experiencing high volumes of inquirers and will get back to me when they can

#

I just hope they don't go under. I can't even imagine the amount of money they had lost due to warranty claims if even a qtr of the units sold has had to replace what all i had replaced

Thanks for the tip, you really have a point there and I will highlight it. I haven't mentioned that backend runs on the homeassist, but there is no charge for this software at all. That's why I can see this being really unique when I compare it to other smarthomes in Czech Republic/UK which can go from $5000 for "ugly" non-interactive interface and without advanced features. This box with installation, manufacturing, design, programming will cost about $2000-3000 per one home.

# forest edge but that site comes off as it being something completely separate and different ...

I might have made a mistake in choosing right words to describe the service. In theory how I wish it to work would be:

  1. Company "A" makes 20 of the same housing units a year and I will provide them with service (3D and installation), hardware and software build up homeassistant for each unit.
  2. Regular home owner will order a service where we need to scan the unique house, 3D model and do the programming.
forest edge
#

yea you should word it accordingly. Like installers do for like control4 systems etc

as features evolve they release upgraded hardware

which is a joke, cause hubitate is like roku's in the sense of quality but it's the buisness model

finite atlas

or perhaps pay 50€ more in a 2000€ service, to not bother the customer with their system needing upgrades in 4 years

forest edge

depends on his plan.. if there is any type of subscription or being "on call" he wants repeat buisness

why sell something that never needs to be touched again?

#

that's just bad buisness

finite atlas

because the buyer might be smart and choose the product with the lowest long term cost

as long as the setup he sells functions for what the client wants at the point of sell.. anything else down the road is no diffrent than buying a better tv etc

I think hubitat is a complete ripoff, yet they have a client base, people shell out that $150-200+ for those devices and will shell it out again for the next revision of the hardware etc

I think if someone was able to mass produce a machine built specifically for HA able to handle the most basic of uses for the platform and keep the cost down and sell it as cheaply as possible.. people would gobble it up and they would shell out way more than what the hardware was worth as long as the machine did exactly what it claimed to do

why it's sad the rpi zero isn't supported by HA.. that thing would be friggen awesome in so many use cases

only thing im not 100% happy with opnsense is the UI. You have haproxy that is the default people use it seems, but also support nginx proxy (not the web ui), and traefik from a 3rd party repo. Sad thing with traefik you just get one box to put all config in, and traefik is the one I have learned. Now I have to choose between haproxy and nginix

clear ferry
#

I have used *sense for 18 years

#

I started using haproxy this year for fun only

#

I do all my proxying inside my networks

#

just forward 443 to the traefik container inside your network

late gate
#

a bit of the point was to have just one point of failure for router, dns (eg adguard/pihole) and proxy. That would cover all my "edge" services

#

I setup haproxy and it works alright, just not too fan of the UI

clear ferry
#

haproxy is pretty simple, I just wish I could paste config instead of clicking in the UI

late gate

doesnt work on portainer though, just fails with ERR_HTTP2_SERVER_REFUSED_STREAM, and seem like many got that issue
