yuck tv-tuners, I gave that stuff up in 2006 when we moved to IPtv

FM is not that useful, only if I start driving and haven't started music playing in my car before I start moving

static schooner

clear ferry
#

We have it free over IP @umbral cliff and everyone has a media center or a phone, and can just Chromecast it to the tv

umbral cliff
#

Yeah we can do over IP too

static schooner
#

our major OTA TV networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) all have better quality than you'd get elsewhere, so I always record from them

umbral cliff
#

Or over a normal OTA antenna

static schooner
#

since it's all digital, I get great signal from a tiny flat antenna hung from the rafters in my attic

there was a service tgat did ota to iptv; but they were sued out of existance by the big broadcasters

weird

need an atsc3 tuner for that

forest edge

can't wait till they go full blown with it. even curious if newer cars will support it since it's perfectly capable of doing a side cast of music

umbral cliff
#

Theres already a perfectly good digital radio system called DAB

static schooner

static schooner
#

I suspect that's why the broadcasters don't feel the need to rush

#

analog->digital was a much bigger deal

#

It's yet another situation where South Korea is way out front

#

San Diego is behind Jamaica 🙂

#

we used to be orange, but changed back to blue when (I guess) they decided that one experimental channel wasn't "on the air" worthy

umbral cliff
static schooner
#

especially if your TV automagically upscales without you even knowing it

#

I suspect that you have to have a pretty big TV and sit pretty close to it to notice

forest edge
#

not many. it hasn't really taken off yet

static schooner
#

the actual programs are in 4K?

forest edge
#

curious how the homerun thing will handle the "interactive" portion of what atsc3 can do

forest edge
static schooner
#

It's basically a networked tuner. It has pretty tight integration with Channels, so I suspect they'll figure it out

forest edge
#

most stations haven't really set up something to fully utilize all of it's capabilities because right now not many tv's have atsc3 tuners

#

it won't be till that it becomes standard that we'll start to get the really cool stuff

#

and watch tv prices skyrocket.. will be so funny for someone to pay premium price who dosen't even use OTA because of the tuner inside it

Im planning to change one of my disks in a storage pool to a SSD to host things like Plex, but need to backup about 18TB of data. Anyone know about a storage service that accept that kind of data and are fast? Its just going to be there until the volume is reduced

#

if that is down, I have bigger issues

late gate
#

u have adblock there?

clear ferry

I've seen the people who use pihole do 2-3 systems though

yes, there is ad blocking \ tracking cookie blocking in *sense

has been for decades

yikes

just run pihole on a pi, I hear people saying the kids toys are usuable for stuff like that, kinda in the name pihole I guess

clear ferry

he actually did 2 years of IT school, worked as a windows admin for 2 years, and still I wouldn't trust him to install a network cable correctly

just the case they only support wifi 2.4ghz on a device that use zigbee is weird

clear ferry

umbral cliff

Thats only like 4a, barely overloading

prisma briar
#

Yea but 900w plus 5 other boxes pulling between 100 and 200w adds up

#

I'm only on a 120v/20A circuit

umbral cliff
#

Oh true stupid america 120v

clear ferry

Yuck 120v

prisma briar
#

Yea, I can't get 3500w from a circuit like 240v countries can

umbral cliff
#

Lmao

clear ferry
#

Normal breakers here are 16a since the 90s

prisma briar
#

My breaker/wiring is 20a

umbral cliff
#

Just realised that my living room electric radiator is 2400w, most of your circuit just there

prisma briar
#

So it cost more and performs worse

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

2400w would be 100% of my circuit

umbral cliff
#

Think mid 2000s though

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

It's fun looking at customers in the US running blade systems on 120v, can only run the enclosure with half of the servers

glacial knot
prisma briar
#

Just because it's not tripping the breaker doesn't mean it's not overloaded

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

I think my kettle is 1500w

glacial knot

my microwave oven is like another 900W or so 😄

umbral cliff
#

Microwave is 1000w

glacial knot
#

when both run I actually get somewhat close

umbral cliff

Oven is like 3500w, can do it off a 16a circuit lol
Hotplate is more of course

But those are fixed

prisma briar
glacial knot
#

I wonder if that's why 'murican's don't know proper tea
can't get the tools to make it 😂

#

The stovetops are on 3phase 400V^^

prisma briar
#

And almost all houses/buildings actually have 240v coming into them

clear ferry
#

Yes, datacenters, but sometimes customers have strange cold sites

prisma briar
#

It's just in two phases

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

Each phase in reference to ground is 120v, each phase in reference to each other is 240v

#

So my AC and stove and dryer are all on 240v and I have a 240v utility plug in my garage

glacial knot
#

each phase is 230V to ground, but 400V between the phases

clear ferry
#

Yeah we have done 400v in for the last 30 years

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

having neither on neutral sounds horrible tbh.

clear ferry
#

Then split it to 3x230v

umbral cliff
#

Probably have three phase into the apartment block, then split out

umbral cliff
#

My brain is stupid

prisma briar
#

Larger buildings like apartments here are 3 phase at like 340v

#

So instead of 240v they get 208v

glacial knot
#

Breaker panel lists Stove top (Herd) 3 times due to the 3 phases^^

umbral cliff
#

I have no clue what the input voltage is for the apartment block, just know inside its only 230v @ 50Hz

glacial knot
#

unless it has multiple hundred (if not thousand) units, it's gonna be 230V@50Hz from the city

#

I don't think I know a single residential building here that gets mid-level voltages instead of city distribution levels

prisma briar
#

It's different in like every city here.

prisma briar
#

Some houses in my neighborhood have the same 340v/3 phase transformer BS too

glacial knot
#

do you test monthly? 🤔

umbral cliff
#

More like 3 monthly but yes

#

I like knowing my RCDs are working

glacial knot
#

What is going on with power and different protected power? o.0

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

Just make it a simple panel o.0
No need for all that mess

umbral cliff
#

But it is simple?

finite atlas
umbral cliff
#

Also means if something trips an RCD, doesn't trip your entire house

glacial knot
#

30mA o.0

umbral cliff
#

And?

#

Same current to trip your RCD

prisma briar
glacial knot
#

Yea, I was talking about mine
I think more modern ones are lower 🤔 I need to check

prisma briar
#

Mine looks more ominous.

glacial knot
#

I don't think I've managed to trip that one though
Only ever over current

prisma briar
#

Lol

umbral cliff
#

So all power and lights are RCD

#

And now oven and hotplate

prisma briar
#

I've got like 5 outlets on GCFI/RCD's throughout my house, the rest are just normal breakers.

umbral cliff
#

Only thing left is the aircon, but also I don't touch anything metal with my aircon anyway lol

clear ferry
#

My 90s breaker cabinet

prisma briar
#

None of the breakers over here are rcd, we use gfci outlets then everything daisy-chained off of that outlet is protected

prisma briar
#

gfci/rcd, same thing different name

umbral cliff
#

Yeah but then if it trips its guess the outlet

finite atlas
#

You guys have gfci's ?

umbral cliff
#

Americans are weird

glacial knot
#

Daisy chaining 🤢

prisma briar
#

There's a button on the outlet to reset it

#

And another to test

umbral cliff
#

I prefer the centralised approach lol

glacial knot
#

I recently tripped an outlet like that in the office

#

Though only by inrush current

prisma briar
glacial knot
#

Look at how stupid those outlets look 😂

#

Even British is better

prisma briar
#

Most only have the vertical bar without the horizontal bar on the left prong, that's for 20A devices

#

Which aren't very common

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

I don't think we have 20A standard 🤔 You either manage with 3.5kW or use 3phase

prisma briar
#

Basically nobody here uses 20A because the wiring is so much more expensive

#

But it is a defined standard

glacial knot
#

just a bit thicker and more annoying to work with 🤷

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

You're running 32a wiring around your house?

umbral cliff
#

New builds are for the hotplates

#

Thick cables lol

glacial knot
#

I've only ever seen that with 3phase

#

Or the wiring going into apartments

prisma briar
#

7680w is absurd

#

That's >40% of my house's entire capacity

umbral cliff
dusky plank
#

Kraftnetz

glacial knot
# prisma briar 7680w is absurd

Most houses here are on 63A 3phase incoming fuses
With usually the stove on 16A 3phase, and another 16A 3phase routed around the house for normal power past the breaker panel

prisma briar
#

I have 2 phase 75a breakers

finite atlas
#

The main house fuse box

#

after it comes the electricity counter and then your own fuses, wires and all that stuff

prisma briar
#

My stove, dryer, and AC are all on two phase. I'm not sure what the wiring for them is rated for though

#

Well, AC is 12 gauge, idk the other two

finite atlas
#

10mm2 till the electricity meter
2,5mm2 for all circuits that need <16A

prisma briar
#

12awg is 4mm2 it looks like

finite atlas
#

that would be 25A max here

clear ferry
#

Awg is so weird, smaller number, larger gauge

glacial knot
#

I love how tiny the safety line is

#

waaiit, that's wrong 🤔

finite atlas
dusky plank
#

why are there solid core cables in walls while there are mostly stranded wires in the appliances? even high current ones? I don't get that

glacial knot
#

yea, but that should be proper neutral, not safety. Why isn't it thicker than the other 3 o.0

prisma briar
glacial knot
#

the safety only exists past the breaker panel

#

solid core for infrastructure, stranded for things that may be moved

finite atlas
#

stranded

  • more expensive
  • larger size
  • but flexible

solid

  • cheaper
  • a bit slimmer
  • better for working on the cables
  • not very flexible
glacial knot
#

solid core is better for everything except being moved^^

prisma briar
dusky plank
#

so with the same diameter there is not really much difference in terms of hazard at these power levels between stranded and solid?

finite atlas
#

you can for example just clamp solid core directly, while for stranded wire you need to crimp it first to make sure it got a proper contact

finite atlas
prisma briar
#

When you crimp it you kinda force the crimped part into being solid core

finite atlas
#

thats the point

dusky plank
#

mkey

glacial knot
#

why crimp, when you can just dunk your wire ends in liquid solder

finite atlas
#

you can mess up soldering it

#

and it takes more time

I'm not sure what you mean to be honest

Please use a code share site to share code or logs, for example:

Please don't use Pastebin, since it can randomly add spaces to the main view. Please also don't share text as images since it makes it harder for people to help you. Remember that others may have colour blindness, impaired vision, etc.

To avoid having the bot move your message... don't paste it directly into the channel - use a code share site as explained in #rules

forest edge
#

has that convert-to-txt thing been moved to other channels or still just in OT?

clever mortar
#

It's everywhere now

forest edge
#

nice

clever mortar
#

It still has the problem of it taking a moment to clean up, but it does work pretty well

candid ibex
#

I really don't appreciate the way you responded to my feedback. It makes me feel unwelcome.

forest edge

he gets that sometimes

There are rules...

People complaining about the rules... not something I care about

Rules can only get better if people can have open discussions about them

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

what if you had a bunch of shit you wanted implants for? would you run out of spots to have them stuck in and ultimatly have to press your butt cheek to gain access to something?

clear ferry

I considered implant when I still was a tech, but my 40 or so access cards had too many different technologies, so I would need 3 implants

forest edge
#

now I want to see someone put an implant in thier ass just so I can watch it

tidal bronze
#

Lol. I gotta read up this. Probably pretty hefty charge backs on TTP

forest edge
#

I hope i am dead before something like that becomes the standard
