Oh, my doctors must be from the midwest then 🤣

That is awful, hope she is better now

Mostly, she still has issues but they're minor

last cedar

Doctors told me I need to swap job, being an electrician (working above face height) is not a good thing

Given the state of the car... I'm impressed she was relatively unharmed. It was "slightly" re-shaped

Well, same working positions as electrician

With their name and some other info I can get all of their financial information from the tax office. Legally

last cedar
#

@clear ferry like that, but more "not" ok

night zodiac
#

I just got an idea. So I need a camera with its IR filter removed and an IR laser. I put the IR laser into my harry potter wand and I do gestures on different things throughout my house with a wand.

#

someone has to have done this already

#

or something like it 😛

#

ORRRRR, I go to Hogwarts and learn to do magic.

glacial knot
#

Wiimote

night zodiac
#

yeah, but how does it know where the remote is, it would just have an idea of the movements, right?

#

I have a gesture sensor here somewhere

glacial knot
#

it does have an IR receiver, so you could put up some beacons so it knows where it is. And motion plus ones should be good enough to recognize your gestures

clear ferry
night zodiac
#

but LASER BEAMS 😛 jk

glacial knot
#

afaik the "sensor bar" is just two IR sources

#

and original wiimote just did everything based the IR sensor

#

only with motion plus did it gain actual motion sensors

I never had a wii myself but played them a bit at friends and such

I ditched class one time and played tiger woods golf for a few hours after eating some mushrooms

I wouldn't get the bissel hand held one like i did. the tank is too small and the ergonomics is not really best for any other position than using it like a car wash or something

that's a lot of arabic and hebrew in one line

#

what I find disturbing is the amount of students using some form of AI to do their homework is already pretty high and continues to increase.

umbral cliff
#

Give students a way to cheat and they’ll take it, whether it’s AI or whatever

umbral cliff
#

When I was at uni a bunch of students were using ghost writers
AI just means they don’t have to pay anyone for the same thing

forest edge
#

pay anyone?

umbral cliff
#

Just need better methods to detect cheaters/ better assessments to avoid them being useful

forest edge
#

was that a tradition?

umbral cliff
#

AI is free

forest edge
#

I've seen such shit in movies, even while growing up but never once ever met anyone on on either side of that

umbral cliff
#

I’ve seen a few students suffer academic misconduct penalties for using those services

#

Heard about even more

forest edge
#

they should just unplug the internet lol

umbral cliff
#

That won’t help, these are assignments it happens on

#

Or some even have people come in to sit their exams

forest edge
#

i dunno, no internet. maybe they would get bored enough to actually go themselves lol

#

certianly won't be spending so much time indoors lol

umbral cliff
#

Oh you mean disconnect the internet entirely? How will that work for people who live at home….

forest edge
#

live at home?

umbral cliff
#

Whilst at uni, living at home. Yes

#

Or living off campus

forest edge
#

you know the internet wasn't always a thing right?

umbral cliff
#

Yes

#

But you just said unplug the internet

#

And I thought you meant just disconnect during exams, then thought you meant for an entire uni campus

forest edge
#

i meant for everyone lol

umbral cliff
#

But also, ghost writing predates internet. People used to (and still do) advertise by handing out fliers, people text/ call/ etc to organise

#

Then it gets done

forest edge
#

like the purge, but instead disconnect the net for like 3 months

#

that must be more of an au thing

umbral cliff
#

Yeah I prefer being able to WFH where able, or connect with friends and family given they’re not in the same city as me

forest edge
#

i never heard of it being so widley used

umbral cliff
#

#

It’s why the uni couldn’t do anything

forest edge
#

makes you wonder just how many would die after the first week of like a global net outage lol

umbral cliff
#

Given how many depend on the internet for food deliveries/ etc, or for some its their only way to socialise with people who share like interests, a lot

#

Let alone those who want to stay WFH to look after family

#

Or the major losses suffered by companies who can’t sell their stuff and the following amount of people who don’t have a job and don’t have an income

all i hear is social improvement

umbral cliff

Nope, pointing out a flaw is saying “Oh yeah flaw in how education relies on trust for everyone to do their work and allows assignments easily cheated with”
complaining is wanting to watch people die with the internet turned off and saying how its turned everything bad and its sad people rely on it

how is that a complaint and not pointing out a flaw?

Well I am anti-ui for HA so never looked into any display solution. Then again less words with guests is the goal with these.

forest edge

guess the one up with these over like a tablet is not dealing with power issues

tidal bronze

Yep.

umbral cliff
#

It's why the Google pixel tablet looks interesting. Has a stand but can be taken off it, will make some interesting central tablet control

tidal bronze

Never needed a UI for day to day use. Only when running tests. Come to think of it even wife's phone has one widget with garage click.

Anyone using FP1 sensors?

forest edge
#

thats the one you want

tidal bronze
#

Not using that one. But my mmwave sensors are getting triggered by roborocks

forest edge
#

I can't find the video but the same dude who makes that one I posted above did a compare with that aqura one and I swear he mentioned something about the fp1 detecting on mere motion

static schooner
#

As opposed to what?

forest edge
#

he's probably in this server. he does tons of HA type videos

tidal bronze
#

I am running 11 of those in my test. Gets triggered on forced heat and roborocks. Bummer.

forest edge
static schooner
#

The point of mmWave is not just motion detection

forest edge
tidal bronze

PIR has no issues. It's PIR 😆 issues is with mmwave.

static schooner

The FP1 works great for me sitting at my desk in my office, better than PIR

#

and just as fast at detection

#

Biggest annoyance is that it's wired

tidal bronze
#

Mmwave is the answer for sure. Yes 💯. I am running mmwave PIR combo. Some angles PIR faster. Overall it's almost the same.

tropic dew

more like 40 up, testing it now

umbral cliff
#

Copper will never be pulled out here even if we go fibre, because some places (mainly rural farms) want some way for phone calls that doesn't depend on mobiles or satellite

clear ferry
#

all distribution copper is being pulled, and if you have xdsl today and it breaks they tell you to order fiber

glacial knot
#

40Up is okey. Not great, but not horrible

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

you don't make sense

#

fiber carries the VoiP as well and relies on neither sat nor mobile

umbral cliff

Landline phones are done over IP

#

Middle of fucking nowhere will not get fibre

But they have copper

They want to keep analogue phones

glacial knot

you just said they'd still want copper, even if they got fiber

umbral cliff

Not swap to phones over IP over sat

umbral cliff
glacial knot

there are no more analogue phones here 🤷 because it's all over IP

#

I thought you don't want sat? god, you are just confusing me now

umbral cliff

Only places that have analogue phones are where their only option is Sat

clear ferry

We don't even have desk phones in offices, it is all mobile 😄

umbral cliff
clear ferry

no stores have phones

glacial knot
#

doesn't zoom do calls to normal numbers as well by now?

clear ferry

no desk phones

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I've been doing calls to and from teams for 4 years already

glacial knot
#

most stores here have DECT handsets that people carry around, but still some base station somehwere in the building

clear ferry
#

@umbral cliff they have both direct numbers and reception numbers

#

all mobile

umbral cliff
#

That sounds annoying for someone to have to carry a phone around with them

clear ferry
#

everyone does already

#

it's their regular phone

umbral cliff
#

So staff have to use their personal phone for work

#

Yuck

glacial knot
#

lies! I know people that aren't allowed their phones at work

clear ferry
#

no

#

work pays their phones

#

and it is only connected during work hours

umbral cliff
#

That sounds extremely complicated vs just a single VoIP phone

clear ferry
#

not really, it is mostly automatic

glacial knot
#

just install this app and boom

clear ferry
#

people come into work, logs in, phone is automatically redirected

umbral cliff
#

And their work pays their personal phone 100% of the time?

clear ferry
#

usually yes

umbral cliff
#

I can't see a grocery store wanting to pay their workers phones, given about 10+ people could be able to answer the phone at one time

clear ferry
#

wheverer you need to be avaliable on phone

glacial knot
#

I use my corpa phone as primary phone 🤷

clear ferry
#

grocery store usually only the shift managers are on that ring

umbral cliff
#

Or say the retail store my partner works at, everyone could be on the store phone at any time

clear ferry
#

yeah, I have used my corp phone for 15 years now

#

work pays my phones, and my bills

glacial knot
#

I never see any bill

clear ferry

umbral cliff
#

My mum didn't have a personal phone until about 3 years ago, always had work before then since she first got a mobile in the 90s

yeah, see nothing here either

umbral cliff

clear ferry

we used to have that

now I have 15GB and I have to answer "yes" to extend it

#

and my kids roam in the backseat

umbral cliff

I have 180 on my phone plan, price bumped up $2/month last year due to inflation, they threw in an extra 100gb for it lol

I tried to find out what the limit on my corp plan is. I think it's actually unlimited D:

umbral cliff

our corp plan is limited by american bullshit, no 5G and only 15G a month, because in the US the worker ants have no rights

umbral cliff
#

Don't think you can get a phone plan from any of the big 3 here anymore without 5G included

glacial knot
clear ferry
#

this is a special plan with tmobile europe that we don't even have in norway

umbral cliff
#

At work I have access to the standard 100/100 internet plan (fine for about 10 people in an office who mostly use client network anyway)

glacial knot
clear ferry
#

LOL

glacial knot
#

wdym. you don't have symmetric gigabit at work? o.0

umbral cliff
#

Its 10 people in a sub office

#

Who mostly use client network anyway

glacial knot
clear ferry
#

our office net sucks too, think it is like 500\500

#

I'm so used to 10G internet at customer sites

umbral cliff
#

Theres no need for the secondary office to pay extra for useless speed

glacial knot
#

tbh. I don't even know how well the office is connected. I'm only ever on wifi

umbral cliff
#

*office

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I need to keep an eye out to see if 10G drops in price soon

#

it isn't that bad, $170 for 10G/10G

glacial knot
#

and the corp VM I primarily work on gets around 3G symmetric

glacial knot
clear ferry
#

but 1G\1G is $85

umbral cliff
#

At the main office work guest wifi is get a username/password from local IT services

glacial knot
#

why though? The wifi has station isolation and there's nothing except the egress router

umbral cliff
#

To prevent next door offices leaching from the network lol

clear ferry
#

LOL

umbral cliff
#

People would do it

#

Actually unsure what speed client net is, never browse the internet on it, only local resources

clear ferry
#

The norm here for guest networks the last 10+ years has been either

  • registering with captive portal with password from front desk
  • registering yourself via sms in captive portal
umbral cliff
#

People rarely visit our office (more likely for us to go to client sites) so I don't think its even used much

glacial knot
#

the only "next door" office is Salesforce.
And our infra team is pretty good at keeping it contained. I actually don't have wifi on the terrace

#

so when I sit outside at the office, I take my phone to host a hotspot to work 😄

#

I don't need any service that's exposed on corp wifi either way. Everything is 0 trust either way 😮

umbral cliff
#

Imagine being able to work outside of the office lol

#

Most of my work is client side, all ethernet terminals

glacial knot
#

wdym?

umbral cliff
#

I can't work outside of my desk in the office. My work is all on client computers

glacial knot
#

You have your client's computers on your desk?

umbral cliff
#

I'm on client site every day

#

So yes

glacial knot
#

F

umbral cliff
#

Well its our office, but dedicated to this project/ client

#

So client computers are set up there

#

Jealous of other projects with client laptops or just everything from corp laptop

glacial knot
#

We do have a solution for that though
The lab has a networked kvm 😄
