midnight adder
#

But it only can infer from the inputs its been trained from. So while it might raise the minimum of at-hand-creativity, it won't surpass the max?

rapid plinth
#

I guess that's the next test: if we can make recursive training work, literally AI training AI

midnight adder
#

well, thats already simple enough for some things.

Such as image-generation ai being used to create a butt-ton of images, then have humans partial parse them, retrain with new data, and estimate on the remaining butt-ton and repeat

#

i dunno, people are probably already working at it and kids will just call me "gradpa" for not getting it

rapid plinth
#

we will at a minimum reach a point where AI is capable of completely supplanting human labor in all forms and leave us with absolutely nothing productive to do ourselves. Whether we actually let them take over is a bit of an open question.

Any used laptop with a broken screen, any minicomputer

Should be $100 or thereabouts

Or just fix the one you have

yeah, i got the busted laptop, i don't know what the hell is going on

i'm inclined to get something more stable/purposeful since i've got other stuff running on it like plex/photoprism/bittorrent

not sure where I should put this, so I'll toss it here. been using HA for the last few months, and wanted a way to have all my lights and switches that are on or off grouped in a single card, so I can easily see what is on or off, without a giant mess, and woo found auto-entites, which is great, but then I had two cards, one with all my on stuff, and one with all my off stuff, then I found tabbed card, woo now I can have one card with both, and then couldn't get them to work together for a long time. well after the recent WAN show from LTT they talked about ChatGPT and how it could mess with code. so I fed it the documentation for both, asked it to code up a card with a tab for on and a tab for off, and it spit out code that worked the first try. which I have pasted here: https://pastebin.com/ZhPmm6gK in case anyone else is on the same thought line and grinding on the same problem

DIY PoE power supply for a device that doesn't actually need wired ethernet

#

Apparently you can just shove 48v down some of the wires and it's happy

#

I always thought there was more to PoE than that

#

1g PoE does seem to have more, since it doesn't have unused lines like 10/100 does, but 10/100 is fine with just some voltage down some wires.

scenic radish
#

Well there's a handshake with anything other than passive PoE

#

The only reason that works is because Unifi APs support 48V passive PoE

prisma briar
#

I did actually check that before I tried this.

#

It probably doesn't need 90w though

#

Only 48v PSU I had.

scenic radish
#

Don't try what you did with anything that doesn't support 48V passive PoE though

prisma briar
#

I would've just bought an adapter but I couldn't find anywhere in town that sold them

This also was free.

prisma briar

I took the larger parts of it to get recycled

#

So I got a few power supplies and a couple usb cables from it.

glacial knot
#

wdym you can't keep the 85" 4k TV from the conference room?

prisma briar
#

I would've considered keeping one of the projectors but they were kinda old, kinda hot, and the bulbs were either cheap and yellow tinted/poor CRI or really expensive.

#

The bulbs were why we were getting rid of it. It got to the point where we could replace the projector with an LED one for the price of 6 months of bulbs.

glacial knot
#

they stopped selling stuff to staff entirely at some places here, because some consumer protection technically requires the company to provide support 😂

prisma briar
#

My company has some weird policies around giving/selling stuff to staff too. If anything is given out it has to be raffled off to the entire company, I don't think they allow selling at all.

#

Like 3 or 4 years ago we switched the model of SSD we were using in our servers due to high failure rates, we raffled off a hundred or so 1TB SSDs to everyone.

dawn moth

Any idea what this is?

#

It looks like the interface for my typical thermostat

#

I want to adapt this to a smart thermostat with home assistant integration

scenic radish
#

Yeah, looks like a furnace control board

dawn moth
#

That's the purpose of that thermostat, it's a manual control for the Electrical AC and Natural Gas Furnace.

#

Both tie into the same air ventilation system.

dawn moth
# dawn moth

Could I perhaps make a tazmoto thermostat connected to HA, and integrate it directly to that control panel?

Or would I be best to use a ecobee or other smart thermostat with HA and then have a tazmoto controller at that control panel for the the thermostat?

#

I've seen both Ideas are possible, I'm just not sure what the cons/pros compared to either method.

#

problem is it's api over cloud. gross

dawn moth
forest edge
#

yea if you are wanting full local control your best bet is to ditch the honeywell

dawn moth
#

What would be my best replacement?

#

Diy and open soruce are right up my alley

forest edge
#

well first I would google around. it's been a couple of years since I last dove into getting my honeywell into HA. maybe something recently will be able to do what you are looking for

dawn moth
#

I've got the furness, ac, gas fireplace, and in in floor heating zone... perhaps even a humidifier if I can troubleshoot it. That I would like to control.

forest edge
#

I know they sell wifi thermostats but I think those also require internet for api access

dawn moth
#

Yea pretty sure they do since I last checked

#

I feel like I could just replace the Honey well system and leave it mostly in tact case anyone wants to reconfigure it

#

I've seen some people control in floor heating using a board running tazmota

#

I wonder if I could interface everything into one system?

forest edge
#

as long as whoever installed it didn't cut the thermotstat wires short leading up the wall. the system I have is redlink and only uses the power leads of the thermostat wire from the furnace

#

installer almost cut my wires till i told him no

dawn moth
#

Dam, hope that's not the case

#

The gas fireplace should be the easiest, their pretty versatile

#

In floor heating is using it's own older knob based thermostat.

#

Since the in floor heating and gas fireplace handling heating completely on their own in one room, should I attempt to interface those two into their own shared thermostat that intergrates into Home Assistant?

And then have the AC and Furnace tied into a separate shared thermostat for the rest of the house?

first 3d print was a bottle cap for my cat since he's obsessed with them

umbral cliff
# dawn moth What would be my best replacement?

I know people here hate Linus Tech tips, but in one of his smart home videos he showed a tasmota controlled board with 8 relays (I think) which were used to control his under floor heating. In a similar structure I think to yours. Could probably do something similar/ take inspiration

#

He then uses ecobee (using Homekit to HA for local interaction) to control in the rooms & HA to be in the middle and turn the floor heating on for the room when the ecobee in that room requests heating

forest edge
#

didn't he state in his latest video that the system didn't really work out all that well

umbral cliff
#

Wasn't that because it just wasn't set up well + they couldn't figure out how to get them to link together?

#

Since the latest video it seemed as though it worked fine (except for his ecobees being heated stupidly by his reverse cycle controller)

#

Also no harm in taking what he did and doing it better lol

glacial knot
#

which reminds me, I wanted to try and see if I can find a power strip which measures (and potentially allows switching) of individual sockets
And if there's none, look into building one

dawn moth
dawn moth
forest edge
dawn moth
#

That's interesting

#

Is the T9/10 a thermostat that integrates with that module?

forest edge
#

i just amazoned the prices.. apparently inflation has made them retarded

#

use to be able to get the T9 as little as 60 bucks

#

the t10 though is the one that can control a humidifier and extra sensors etc

#

oh apparently the T9 can do the sensors

dawn moth
#

The humidifier itself is mounted to the furnace

forest edge
dawn moth
#

Yeah

forest edge
#

the T10 is the only one that can control humidity and that sucker is over 200 bucks.. too sticker shock for me. however if you skip the humidity you can grab a T5 for under 100 bucks and can still use homekit with that

#

if it's attached to the duct, yea, it's controlled by the same honeywell box you posted pictures of

#

BUT you still need a thermostat which supports humidity to control it

dawn moth
#

Hmm

#

Doesn't it look like it's using it's own thermostat?

#

Scratch that... it might support it

forest edge
#

thats an old unit. i have no idea. you would have to follow the wires coming off it. if none of them lead to that honeywell box then you might be able to use a seperate thing for humidity

forest edge
# dawn moth

looks like the unit i have. mine does control humidity

dawn moth
#

Yeah it's got a humidity sensor at least

forest edge
#

yea it's basic, you can only set a range

dawn moth
#

I think I see why they cut it off, it goes to the water filter which has bacteria in it, needs to be maintenanced

forest edge
#

like a max of 50% i think and min of 35% or something

dawn moth
#

How do you know how much humidity you want?

forest edge
#

yea that humidifier looks old. I would replace it or ditch it all together

#

humidity is preference. usually mine only runs during the winter, helps make the air feel warmer as well as not drying you out like a prune

dawn moth
#

Exactly why we installed it... I'm just too oblivious either way haha

#

Good to know, I definitely I wanna get it working again dry skin is an issue for many of us in the winter

forest edge
#

well if you insit on trying to get that old thing back up and running, i would pull it off the duct, turn off the furnace and spray a helping dose of bleach all inside it

dawn moth
#

Wise Idea, can I simply turn off the heat via the thermostat?

forest edge
#

there should be a physical switch next to the furnace like a light switch

#

if not, you can always flip the breaker

dawn moth
#

Not on mine

#

Would have to go with the breaker

forest edge
#

unless the system was installed diy then the furnace should be on it's own breaker and labeled

dawn moth
#

Looks like it's installed into that module as well

#

50 Amp breaker by the looks of it

forest edge
#

just be careful cause they just cut a rough hole in the duct which allows air to circulate into the humidifier. duct steel is sharp as hell lol

dawn moth
#

I'll keep that in mind hehe

forest edge
#

there might be silcone or something around it too. not sure

dawn moth
#

It's got like this add-on piece

#

Looks like it just comes right out

forest edge
#

make sure you disconnect the wires

#

those leads coming off those are small. easy to snap

#

you should look up it's model and see what all there is too it. mine has a filter that has to be replaced every year and that filter is what gets hosed by the water and the air circulates through that to humidify the air. yours might work the same way

#

that filter deteriorates. yours is probably gone lol

dawn moth
#

Your probably right, been sitting for 10 years haha

#

What's the point of this control panel?

#

I don't see a single wire coming out of it

#

Battery operated, wireless perhaps?

#

Not to mention is it normal for it to get it's water supply from a water filter?

forest edge
#

I don't know. like i said your unit is ancient. looking up the model online should tell you how it all goes and works together

#

it dosen't really matter where the water it gets comes from

dawn moth
#

Interesting guess it was done for redundancy, I'll have to get the water softener going first, then the water filter system then finally the humidifier.

I'll do some research and see what I can dig up.

Since the T10 is quite pricey, Wouldn't I best to give that one idea a try?

#

Setup a diy tazmoto thermostat and ditch the honey well module?

forest edge
#

not sure how that works with a humidifier

dawn moth
#

Do you know if the water in a softener needs to be cleaned?

Like is it cleaned by running a cycle or is there more to that task?

forest edge
#

no idea. never had a softener and the ones I use to see eons ago all used salt

I need to find a method of reading off the remote heat water system. Its a dumb reader and outside. I have not looked at it, and hope at least it got a led pulse

#

I found out my server rack averages around 15kwh per day

#

which was 5 less than I imagined

#

so, my server rack is only 15% of my daily power usage currently

late gate
#

Do you really NEED a server rack?

clear ferry
#

yes

late gate
#

I have just two server rack items

#

Trying to find a small and white rack

clear ferry
#

I have 9U of always on, plus 30ish of power as needed

#

or like when my wifes best friend came to visit, and asked what companies I work for, I asked her to keep her eyes on the side of the road when driving through oslo

late gate
#

Yeah I understand that. I understood how expensive it it was when I ran 6x APC 6000 UPS, how much they dragged on idle

clear ferry
#

"this one?" she asked
and I replied "yes" to to all questions

late gate
#

Now I have one UPS, but I have not mounted it

clear ferry
#

UPS' in themselves don't drag much power, unless you have load on them

static schooner
#

"you work for that raccoon roadkill?"

clear ferry
#

there is some spillage

#

not much

clear ferry
late gate
#

Mine did. The huge roof reaching rack full with UPS was enough to run the house for hours. I tried it without loads, and it dragged almost a kw

clear ferry
#

that... makes no sense

#

if there is no load and no charge, there should be minimal power draw outside of monitoring

raccoons

late gate
#

Maybe they were faulty. I sold the whole bunch

#

You who got so many UPS, should the EPO port be bridged? I think I remember it was bridged when I bought it, but it think it fell off. As I said I never used it

#

wasn't discord just recently fined for some GDPR issues?

finite atlas
#

probably, but neither is my life so important that i care about it nor are the notes that important

#

too bad matrix is not a useable alternative as of now

#

what is the most reliable dynamic dns provider? I need one for my VPN

finite atlas
#

self hosted

late gate
#

Yeah just use one of my domains I guess

glacial knot
#

I use easydns I think, since it's gratis and I don't have to worry about hosting a server facing the public internet

finite atlas
#

i let my openwrt router handle it
it calls another service, that reports back my ip, that i can then use to update my cloudflare thingies

glacial knot
#

so you use cloudflare

#

I don't want my domain on cloudflare. For no real reason though iirc.

finite atlas
#

so dont?

#

just use whatever you like, you'll likely be able to update your dns records via an api token aswell

glacial knot
#

namecheap is actually notoriously bad about that. They don't support it without something weird

#

which is why I have a very weird setup with most of the domain on theirs, and then just the VPN hostname on another

finite atlas
#

i'm paying 1,92€ a year for my .de domain and my hoster allows me to do some magic and do all the dns records via cloudflare

glacial knot
#

.de D:

finite atlas
#

i'm living there, so i'm fine with it

glacial knot
#

ongy.de is taken, but they don't do anything with it =.=

# late gate not free though :/

Are we looking at the same thing? Joplin is free. You need to find your own hosting for cloud sync but a Nextcloud instance at your house is more than enough

jesus, what a boner move. i filtered *.db from rclone when i was only using HA and nodered. took me hours to figure out why photoprism and my *arr apps weren't working after I restored from backup

#

thankfully i had the ssd still 😩

glacial knot
#

that's why you should test your backup plan

cold marlin
#

that's a fine idea

#

i have a lot to learn

static schooner
#

databases are a pain to back up because you really need to stop the service for them to be consistent

cold marlin
#

and they're silly large

#

sometimes

#

not about to upload 250mb of HA data every day

glacial knot
#

ohh, I need to upgrade photoprism. They released the new user stuff. Which should allow it to be reasonably multi-user

cold marlin
#

probably i should just fix the data being stored...

#

ohh, that's interesting

glacial knot
static schooner
#

I think HA does something like that - flushes & freezes access during a backup

cold marlin
#

soooo what happens when i don't stop DBs, backups are just potentially broken?

static schooner
#

I had to go back to the original drive, stop services, and manually copy the databases over the last time I did a migration

#

depends on what's in there. all my *arr stuff didn't like the databases in the backup and didn't behave properly until I copied them over after shutting down the services
