I used the 85-- I have zero idea what model

#

I had to replace the battery every month but hey whatever

umbral cliff

Now sits under my bed with windows 7 installed on it and BMW coding tools so I can use the dealer software on my computer for my car

dusky plank
#

No microsoft stuff at all. It's purely workplace and I let them know every day

pallid willow
dusky plank
#

heck I have HP usb c docks that work fine with the surface laptops

pallid willow
#

I have a spectre dock

umbral cliff
#

Yeah the surface line of products is good, thought the dock was always overpriced so never got it

dusky plank
#

but to expect microsofts own solution for their surface lineup to work ? nope. not going to go well

pallid willow
#

The dock is so stupid

#

I'm so happy the new surface laptops use thunderbolt so nobody has to use them anymore

umbral cliff
#

You could get away without using the dock anyway with just the USB C port

pallid willow
#

yeah but you didn't get the extra capabilities that the dock had

#

USB-C has limits thunderbolt doesn't have

dusky plank
pallid willow
#

They do?

dusky plank
#

well the laptops and newer ones have, but only on the device itself

umbral cliff
#

That's why I said without using the dock

dusky plank
#

the SURFACE dock (the device which does not cope with SURFACE Laptops or portables) does not have USBc but their proprietary magnet shit

pallid willow
#

umbral cliff
dusky plank
#

no

#

maybe newer ones but no

umbral cliff
#

The 2 definitely does

#

I remember it being a marketing thing

pallid willow
#

new surface dock does

dusky plank
#

there's a 30 pin shite connector on surface devices for a reason (a very shitty reason)

pallid willow
#

V1 doesn't

dusky plank
#

yeah and the fact that MS shit does not work well with MS shit is hilarious

umbral cliff
#

The magnetic connector is great for charging, have avoided someone pulling my surface off a desk with that

umbral cliff
#

Everyone is shit with shit

pallid willow
#

who would've known big companies are terrible at doing things

umbral cliff
#

Like the new iPads where you need a dongle to charge the apple pencil since it's lightning and the iPad is USB C, and the iPad doesn't support the latest pencil with wireless charging

pallid willow
#

it's almost like they only care about money and not the product they give the consumer

dusky plank
pallid willow
#

screw lightning

#

I hate lightning

umbral cliff
#

Lightning was great before USB C

dusky plank
#

the surface laptops and pros just straight up refuse to boot when connected to their docks

It was cool in 2016 but it's 2022 and we're still using 2.0 speeds on phones?

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
pallid willow

not taking about that but ok

umbral cliff
#

You mean the devices? You know that it's pretty standard that when a company is done with devices they just chuck them out

#

EWaste bins are great for that reason

pallid willow
#

Recycling exists

umbral cliff
#

And most companies don't care. They just want the tech gone

#

Sometimes goes to auction

#

Or sometimes straight to destruction

#

EWaste bins at least give it a chance of new life

pallid willow
#

usually what my company does is they lay out all of the old stuff and people can buy if they want, rest goes to recycling

#

we get credit for that

#

up to $100 depending on device

umbral cliff
#

That's good

umbral cliff

heck, batteries get shredded

#

The world of USB-C docks is a minefield of unstable hardware, noncompliance with standards, arbitrary and poorly documented compatibility and other dumb gotchas

#

Your best chance is to buy a device from a major OEM and buy their dock that is specifically listed as compatible with that device, defeating the point of there being a standard in the first place... And even that is far from a guarantee, as seen here

move the broker

Here's a very loaded question for you: Do you use an IP allocation on your network, either DHCP assigned or static IP address, and if so, do you have a format, like x.1 to x.20 for critical infrastructure or such?

No

Only system with static IPs is the router which also runs the DHCP&DNS

just about every device i have has a static ip

have a system?

not really lol. when I first set it up I tried allocating for additional devices of the same type in a single block but over the years that blew apart so...

come up with a decent name scheme, use DNS and DHCP o.0

i use name on some things, but when you have multiples of the same type name actually was worse for me to remember

weak needle
#

Oh that I use What, Where, Details

I was thinking more for things like the kids switches, consoles etc

clear ferry
#

I do DHCP reservations for everything that is not a router or DNS server

And i keep devices of similar nature in the same range

Just for light OCD

But I don't do IoT networks, and i have roughly... 8 internal networks

weak needle

Okay, that would work XD

Dnsmasq is both in one process

clear ferry
#

I am just used to seeing the unifi users complaining about how shit the products are, yet continue to buy them at a premium

prisma briar
#

I'm strongly considering putting openwrt on them. It seems like all of the issues I've ever had were due to their awful software.

#

I don't use any of the rest of the Unifi junk, I only have their APs. I've heard their switches and routers are way worse with problems like this.

orchid rose
#

my openwrt keeps crashing and the HDD connected to it (my "NAS") doesn't stay with its head parked. 3/10 would not recommend

prisma briar
#

I've had openwrt and ddwrt devices before. I switched from a random hodgepodge of hacked routers to Unifi like 4 years ago because my random 10 year old garbage hacked routers were starting to die.

#

I wish I'd just bought a couple nice routers and kept with *wrt though.

static schooner
#

My Unifi APs (AC LR) started out fine, got really bad for a while where I got sick of them dropping connections and going dead, but have recovered in the last year+ to where I don't think about them anymore

prisma briar
#

Yea, they finally fixed them with one of the firmware releases earlier this year

#

I was having to reset my AP AC Pro every 3 or 4 days because it'd start having issues letting clients connect and with packet loss

static schooner
#

I used to have a lot of trouble where the 2.4G network would stay functional while the 5G network would be up and have no connectivity

#

drove me nuts

prisma briar
#

Same, I had completely disabled 5G for a while.

#

I think it was the 6.x releases that fixed it and the 5.x releases that had the problem

#

It's crazy how a company can screw up the firmware on a previously-working device and just leave it for so long.

static schooner
#

You're probably right. I used to update all the time to their betas back in the 3.x/4.x timeframe, then they completely hosed their forums and I just stopped tracking their releases. That's one of the reasons the instability was so frustrating - I felt like they completely abandoned the community

prisma briar
#

I only knew about the changes because I happened to randomly run into a Unifi employee on Discord

static schooner
#

I deleted the bookmark to whatever replaced their forum a long time ago

#

yeah, I have their Discord server in my sidebar, but never visit

prisma briar
#

I can't remember what but they had some rule in their Discord that seemed BS so I left as soon as I joined.

static schooner
#

in any case, I haven't had any significant issues in a long time, so I've been focused on other stuff

#

also haven't felt the need to upgrade to Wifi6, as not enough stuff supports it yet

#

if I need bandwidth, I hardwire

#

I can more than max out my external net connection with my current Wifi setup, and that's all I really care about

prisma briar
#

I was considering wifi6, I haven't found any APs I'm really interested in though.

#

People have been reporting problems with the UniFi wifi6 stuff all over

clear ferry
#

Consumer grade

prisma briar
#

I paid about that for my two UniFi AC APs when I got them ~4 years ago

#

At the time none of the consumer-targeted ones supported vlans or radius and Unifi was about the only reasonably priced prosumer option.

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I have no need for neither VLAN nor radius in my home network, I have dedicated enterprise grade APs for that in my lab

prisma briar
#

RADIUS was mostly me testing configurations before deploying them at work, VLANs are because I don't trust my IoT devices or any of the crap the people I live with use and want them on their own network.

clear ferry
#

So, you should have a network lab you say, and less annoying people

#

or just do proper firewall rules instead

#

no outgoing for your IoT bois!

prisma briar
#

That's basically what I do. I enforce the firewall rules per-subnet. Having IoT junk on a separate vlan also lets me isolate it from my non-privileged wifi and things that might get compromised on that network.

#

I also have client isolation on that network so all the IoT junk is isolated away from the rest of the IoT junk/can only reach my HA server

clear ferry
#

I just don't buy stuff that isn't local smart

I don't trust stuff that claims to only be local.

Zigbee would have a hard time reaching the internet for example

#

and, just block it in the firewall

problem solved

I'm not running a camera over Zigbee though.

clear ferry
#

sure, I run the cheapest poe cameras from aliexpress

#

they never talk to the internet

prisma briar
#

I got a bunch of cheap-ass Amcrest cameras, unless I restrict them they'll send ~10Mb/s out to some random server in China.

yes

prisma briar

Found a bunch of used ones for $50 on Craigslist

clear ferry

block in firewall

#

problem solved

prisma briar
#

Until they switch their MAC address and get a new lease/IP like Amcrest devices are known to do

#

Which is really stupid

clear ferry
#

I have never seen a network device do that outside of very specific firmware upgrades

#

and I've worked with network products for 20+ years Shrug

prisma briar

There's a few forum posts about cameras that use their smart app doing that I found when looking, and mine did it too. ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

clear ferry
#

it did when it was blocked in firewall ? It changed a mac address out of the blue ?

prisma briar

#

People mostly report it changes it out of the blue but I noticed mine doing it when it was blocked from reaching the internet.

clear ferry
#

Nobody mentions they are blocked from the internet

#

So I'm guessing they recieved an update, that renumerated the MAC

#

also the mac address mentioned in the first thread doesn't even exist in a database

prisma briar
#

Devices can use whatever mac they want, it doesn't have to exist in a database.

clear ferry
#

It doesn't but it makes it even less plausible

prisma briar
#

No it doesn't

clear ferry
#

ok

prisma briar

Says the 'network product user of 20+ years' who can't seem to fathom a device that, gasp, violates a standard.

I know consumer protection is weak in the US, but there has to be some limits

prisma briar
#

I'm not a lawyer but I've never heard of any consumer protections that would address something like that.

#

I think that'd require lawmakers to be way more technologically literate than they are

#

Our lawmakers are stuck pretending it's 1850 still and all that newfangled technology can be ignored.

Sounds about right

Fun, I think another one of my WiZ lights died. Can't get it to go into pairing mode anymore and it won't connect to wifi.

#

It's odd, the bulb seems to think it's connected already and won't go into pairing mode. I wonder if one of my neighbors claimed it or something...

Sounds like a good pitch for zigbee lights to me, though I have no dog in your fight for the smart home of your choice.

prisma briar

I've only had 2 out of 48 bulbs fail so far, so ~5% failure rate.

Good show, sounds good

prisma briar

And the other one died after like a day so I just exchanged it

#

The other one the red channel died on

I only have one wiz bulb, been rock solid

#

won't buy more though

#

zigbee lyfe

prisma briar
#

I would have gone with Zigbee but the WiZ bulbs were around 1/4th the price of the comparable Zigbee Hue bulbs.

#

And there wasn't a lot of consistency in the random Chinese Zigbee bulbs I tried.

clear ferry
#

yeah, my zigbee bulbs have been $5-9 each

#

the wiz was $12 on discount, so I wanted to try it as it was rgbw

prisma briar
#

They're generally around $10 on the shelves here. I've seen them on sale a couple times too.

clear ferry

retail the wiz was $16 I think
