Now sits under my bed with windows 7 installed on it and BMW coding tools so I can use the dealer software on my computer for my car
No microsoft stuff at all. It's purely workplace and I let them know every day
using mine to manage my homelab
heck I have HP usb c docks that work fine with the surface laptops
I have a spectre dock
Yeah the surface line of products is good, thought the dock was always overpriced so never got it
but to expect microsofts own solution for their surface lineup to work ? nope. not going to go well
The dock is so stupid
I'm so happy the new surface laptops use thunderbolt so nobody has to use them anymore
You could get away without using the dock anyway with just the USB C port
yeah but you didn't get the extra capabilities that the dock had
USB-C has limits thunderbolt doesn't have
these things don't have usbc
They do?
well the laptops and newer ones have, but only on the device itself
That's why I said without using the dock
the SURFACE dock (the device which does not cope with SURFACE Laptops or portables) does not have USBc but their proprietary magnet shit
I mean where else would they put the USBC port?
in space?
Also the surface dock does have USB C
new surface dock does
there's a 30 pin shite connector on surface devices for a reason (a very shitty reason)
V1 doesn't
magsafe ripoff let's go
yeah and the fact that MS shit does not work well with MS shit is hilarious
The magnetic connector is great for charging, have avoided someone pulling my surface off a desk with that
Same can be said with apple though
Everyone is shit with shit
who would've known big companies are terrible at doing things
Like the new iPads where you need a dongle to charge the apple pencil since it's lightning and the iPad is USB C, and the iPad doesn't support the latest pencil with wireless charging
it's almost like they only care about money and not the product they give the consumer
at least the lightning port does not make my ios devices to refuse boot
Lightning was great before USB C
the surface laptops and pros just straight up refuse to boot when connected to their docks
It was cool in 2016 but it's 2022 and we're still using 2.0 speeds on phones?
Or whatever firmware the company provides with it is broke
its current
Yeah that happens in android land too... Even with USB C
My pixel has 3.0
believe me, they throw away > 300 devices now in december
My Samsung has 2.0, device is 3 months old
that's stupid
its insane
It's designed to be landfill
EWaste for soemone then
No? You can use a device without it being faster than USB 2 lol
not taking about that but ok
You mean the devices? You know that it's pretty standard that when a company is done with devices they just chuck them out
EWaste bins are great for that reason
Recycling exists
And most companies don't care. They just want the tech gone
Sometimes goes to auction
Or sometimes straight to destruction
EWaste bins at least give it a chance of new life
usually what my company does is they lay out all of the old stuff and people can buy if they want, rest goes to recycling
we get credit for that
up to $100 depending on device
That's good
My first server was an old workstation from uni, worked really well especially given it was free
it's mostly like data center servers too
I mean shred the drives but someone in the world can use the hardware
maybe someone wants to run home assistant on it ๐
People get paranoid with hardware in dark sites/ anything concerning national secrets
No chance of that being anything but shredded
heck, batteries get shredded
THIS BATTERY MIGHT STORE A SINGLE EMAIL GET RID OF IT
anything that can be traced
will be shredded
I love the fact that I don't have to bring any hardware back with me from sites
iphones anyone?
or my own laptop
how do you shred a battery
carefully
everything goes into a machine that crunches it to dust
Explosively
Magically
but will it blend?
the last one I saw could do 40 3.5" hdds at once
or a 4U server alone
with all insides
On another note, I feel sort of bad for whichever client is lucky enough to get charged the time for my morning shit
The world of USB-C docks is a minefield of unstable hardware, noncompliance with standards, arbitrary and poorly documented compatibility and other dumb gotchas
Your best chance is to buy a device from a major OEM and buy their dock that is specifically listed as compatible with that device, defeating the point of there being a standard in the first place... And even that is far from a guarantee, as seen here
Excellent
I hope I'm not the only one who thinks that yeah that could have been me
I'm certain there have been cartoons of exactly that
@clear ferry I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:

40T of 2P o.0

I'll have to show off my ping to 8.8.4.4 tomorrow
mine is pathetic, 8.4ms
from the corp machine mine's like .4ms ๐
I have surprisingly callous hands for a dev. I wonder whether it's due to my shitposting speed
or your "woodworking"
it'd be more one sided if ti was from working my wood ๐
Not ambidexterous, I see
I had a guitar teacher who was ambidexterous, could play both left and right handed guitars both ways
was pretty impressive
turns out he also liked young girls, not so impressed anymore
Have you ever tried the stranger?
Der fremder
Hey, y'all got any good links/suggestions to de-google??
Email I won't self-host...
LOL I got locked out of my account due to 2FA, and after getting back in, I am determined not to be in that position again!!
The complete lack of remedy is alarming and annoying.
protonmail is great
(when they don't send your mails to complete strangers on their servers)
excuse me
No, when they don't have any support at all. And they allow you to lock yourself out.
Yeah, but dang, I don't want to self host email.
Interesing
Right now, everything (self hosted) I do is in an VPN....
Getting a domain (paying) and managing getting black-listed occasionally is just too much work (in my past experience).
I just use my own domain with protonmail
@clear ferry Hey... got a "starter protonmail" site or channel you prefer? For setting it up right. I admit to be ing no good at correctly configuring services exposed to the internet.
Thank you, Tailscale.
Yeah i don't use tailscale
And protonmail isn't self hosted, so it is just paying for the service
The bridge is a docker container
I use my own domain with mailbox.org
It's not free, but remember, if you're not paying you're not a customer
Although, to play devil's advocate for a moment
Account recovery is an attack surface, and a very popular one. Look at all the "Imma send you a code, just send it back to me k?" scams
And so far the only issues I've run into with them is using a cable that's not the right speed needed (USB 2 charging only cable, thought it was at least USB 3, but when I bought a TB3 cable dock worked perfectly.
So my experiences have been good
I have an Aukey dock that may or may not work fully depending on in what order you plug things in
An Insignia USB-C to DP cable that just doesn't work with some devices for some reason
A "j5Create" USB-C to HDMI with PD passthrough that just doesn't work with some other devices for some reason, and also may or may not let you use 4K
you've been rolling 6s
my hp dock g2 is sometimes finnicky
but I think that is linux based, if I just replug it it behaves fine
running 2x 4k off it, plus all USB port with extra hubs on it ๐
and one extra 4k monitor via HDMI on the zbook itself
Ah I love spending my day watching something copy that'll take 40 minutes. Then watching it copy again to somewhere else also taking around 40 minutes
Interesting job, can i send you my cv.
Get into sccm package management

@clear ferry I got my current Octavia a raccoon, and now it feels at least as good as a new octavia

its so adorable!
It has only bitten me twice so far
Twice bitten and once shy
Where can I get one?
I have a Santa Squad hoody and multiple christmas hats.
I have.. a lot of Christmas stuff
I've won Christmas outfit contests at work for.. the last 6 years now I think

I'm sure people are proud of you ๐
Pics or didn't happen
I'm sure I posted one last year
my mmwave zigbee sensor arrived, but it isn't supported by z2m
I might need to add support
That because its only you in the competition?
Actually a lot of people dropped out last year because they said "It's no use"

My manager is sending last years outfit to the european newsletter right now actually
to encourage other offices to compete

Looks like any other PIR :/
yall pir does distance and moving away \ coming closer?
Not exactly but you can set sensitivity quite equal to distance and such is what i meant
no

that feeling when you just watch state of the open home and find out there was a migrate button for your automations to go from yaml to the UI.....
1 hour down the toilet
Oh, there is? I need to migrate a bunch of groups
dunno about groups, but automations had one
instead i went and copied all my yaml's into new automations /wrists
yuck ui automations
such limiting wow
blueprints were a nice concept, but I've only used it for the symfonisk rotary encoder
tbh, not anymore. its much better now
probably some small instances where you still need the yaml, but the UI has improved massively this year
yuck
๐ฉ
You can still do hybrid UI and YAML lol
yes
I do that
because of blueprints
also, LOL powercalc really went bonkers
all my 80 or so lights are in that list
and more
What's powercalc
In the last few weeks I have been working on a custom component to get virtual power sensors for your lights or other devices. It is stable enough right now to share it on this forum and make dedicated topic for it. The component provides multiple strategies to calculate estimated power consumption. One of the most interesting is the LUT method...

Oh, Hubitat is getting HomeKit support. Finally catching up with HA then ๐
When I first got into home automation OpenHab was the very first thing I tried cause all of the guides stated it was the easier of the two biggest opensource home automation platforms. it certainly wasn't for me. Devices like that Hubitat was very appealing in the beginning because it flattened the learning curve dramatically many people just don't want to dive down a steep learning curve to make their smart crap do what they envision in their brain.

I'll take that as a "no" ๐

Lol the few times a year that I reboot the server are slightly ass-puckering
Deleting every line doesn't count

I am supposed to be moving from HAOS to docker and every time I get started I feel like I'm not ready for everything to just not work for a week while I figure out what I screwed up ๐
(It's mostly moving all the addons that's scary to be honest)
I started by moving those over one at a time
The problem is the ones that communicate via MQTT
But it did occur to me that I can have one central mqtt.env file on the machine and just update the details of that once I move mosquitto
Hm
having more mqtt just makes it easier
move the broker
and if you had the broker defined as a hostname you could easily just change the underlying IP ๐
But then I have to point all the HA addons at it while I do it, or deal with it all being broken for a day ๐
Just have both running and move step by step
You can't connect MQTT to HA twice ๐
But I'll figure it out, hopefully this weekend
well MQTT should just work by changing the broker like atx said
But if it's an addon right now, I didn't do anything magic to make it work ๐
also I just got my SK6812 leds today, playing with them, and I set the brightness of white leds to full and thought, wow that is dim, then I set colour led to white and full brightness
I can read text next week
probably
And my router back then didn't let me do things like define a hostname ๐คช
Hey, unifi which I now have will let me do that ๐
It was Eero before, great wifi, rubbish everything else
SK6812 is pretty great

That reminds me, my new RGBCCT COB LED strip, (also known as "acronym city light thingy") should be arriving tomorrow or Saturday
I have three COB LED white only in my garage
replaced 10 flouresent double fixtures with them
"RGBCCT COB" now that just sounds hot. I'm guessing those aren't individually controlled and we'll still have to wait a bit?
Not addressable no, not that I recall
I did see those though. Just didn't fancy spending 2x the amount on them
If it's only 2x that sounds like a bargain for a nerd that enjoys reactive lights. Do you happen to have a link for either of those?
These are the ones I ordered: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004753632275.html
The other ones were Tuya and seemed suspiciously cheap so I didn't save the link based on the likelihood they'd be poor quality or a scam.
Thanks
Most of them seem to just be addressable RGB though

When I bought it there was a 12V one which is what I got too
In ~3 weeks I need to split a system in two
I decided what I'd do is, the zwave devices stay at one place, the zigbee devices go to the other place, and I start from scratch copy-pasting automations from the original setup as needed
That sounds very painful, rather you than me

Here's a very loaded question for you: Do you use an IP allocation on your network, either DHCP assigned or static IP address, and if so, do you have a format, like x.1 to x.20 for critical infrastructure or such?
just about every device i have has a static ip
have a system?
not really lol. when I first set it up I tried allocating for additional devices of the same type in a single block but over the years that blew apart so...
yeah, same issue, but trying to update it
come up with a decent name scheme, use DNS and DHCP o.0
i use name on some things, but when you have multiples of the same type name actually was worse for me to remember
Oh that I use What, Where, Details
I was thinking more for things like the kids switches, consoles etc
I do DHCP reservations for everything that is not a router or DNS server
And i keep devices of similar nature in the same range
Just for light OCD
But I don't do IoT networks, and i have roughly... 8 internal networks
Okay, that would work XD
Always map DHCP to dns
<consoletype>-<kidname>.<domain>
OR:
<kidname>.<type>.consoles.<domain>
Use DNS hostnames for everything
Shove every kid into their own subnet so you can DROP easier if they are annoying
oh I like that
Do you just use your DNS host for that?
I don't expose my internal IPs on a public server
Technically that's against spec, but I don't care
I have a scuffed setup. Atx will love it
One dnamasq per subnet which all upstream to one systemd-resolved which knows about the other subnet servers
Yuck
Vague question, rephrase
Rephrased and reasking, how do you keep on top of updating DNS stuff lol
Also presume the DNS resolver is your opnsense one?
Ahh that's neat
Yeah, you'd run an authoritive server for your domain, and update that from DHCP
Dnsmasq is both in one process
Other common ones are knot and bind9
I used to run isc-dhcp and bind9, but that was PITA
I run bind9 in my lab environment where I don't want the stuff to be cleanup afterwards
like with a fully nested cloud environment
just redeploy the same bind9 config every time I need to redeploy that lab with 40ish vms
I'm looking forward to redesigning my home network entirely next year
Hopefully going to do opnsense
DU ITT
pfsense. save yourself some headaches
I can test both out
Yeah but nothing stops me from playing around with both anyway
typical atx, hating on shit that actually works lol
That's what she said?
whoever these new web designers all these companies keep hiring to redesign their company website need to be canned
To be fair, have seen many people say opnsense is great as well. So pfsense isn't always the best
a godamn bank website shouldn't load up like a jigsaw puzzle then hide how to do thing through non indicated drops downs
Sounds like you need a new bank
pfesnse seems to actually make sure shit works before rolling out an update, while opnsense will break people's setup with every update
the opnsense reddit is jam packed with every iteration fucking people over
Netgate used to be good people, they've decended into a cesspool of a maelstrom
I tried pfsense once, without me touching it managed to force a reboot and corrupt it's install lol
That was funny
Lol
not even that. currently in support with Shelly because thier website redesign broke and dosen't even allow people to check out lol
My point was related to your bank's shitty website. So yes a new bank could be useful. Mine is a simple click for online banking, enter details, job done
and that's the thing
the banks new redesign is all click and done.. but there is nothing that indicates initially what you need to click
so yea great.. once you learn it it's fine (aside from the jigsaw load) but wtf kind of mentality is that
there is an old saying, if it ain't broke.. don't fix it
it's like people cannot stop meddling
Yeah again. Get a new bank if they can't design that correctly. For mine it's just a log in sitting in the top right
Not hard to change banks anyway
it's not just the bank site that's like that
they all seems to be moving that direction
like the same 17 year old was hired to do company site designs
They all want modern design. Can do that whilst also having easy to understand websites
Jigsaw loading also sounds like your internet. Probably pfsense ๐
yea shelly is learning that right now.. must be fantastic having no sales lol
I haven't visited my banks website in probably 8 months, i can do anything in the app
i'm still on opnsense..
Heck i got new car loan via email
but maybe that is why lmao
I do it when I can't be fucked using my phone
What exactly is broken with it
it seems like people ran out of ideas.. so "modern" is reinventing the wheel and while something may look pretty, functionality is being tossed out the window lol
not 100% sure. think the site is not calculating taxes or something. been back and forth with shelly support for like an hour now
they also require a "salutation" to be set which is dumb, but there is no place to set one lol
been telling shelly ever since they became a thing they need to get their amazon store in order. and while they have added a bunch of stuff to it, it still lacks some items and they don't transition sales to it
wtf they want over 100 just for mini pc cases now

But I'm missing NES, N64 and WiiU.
you can emulate a few old consoles on the wii u
it runs retroarch
NES & N64 included, just looked it up on my console
My 3DS devolved to a mobile SNES emulator at some point
I think there's even a PS1 emulator? But that's only usable for puzzle games, since framerate is low
my wii u is evolving into a wii emulator of games i played in my child hood + a few newer games
Wii was your childhood? o.0

far more than just cameras. I was referring to kids as well. everything utilized sdcards during that period. hell my old crt tv had an sdcard slot
Only thing I used SD cards for were my DS and digital camera. Had no reason for them otherwise
just confirming what I said
And a lot of people didn't have DSs either
Hell I didn't need one I just stole it from my camera
I have a bunch for drones and things

Gotta keep up with the kids you see

Pretty soon i guess, most kids have phones from first grade here
I got my first when I was in.... 7th grade, and that was 25 years ago

yesterday I spent getting everything into HA and today I make it do stuff
doing thee ol' Pi HAOS -> Docker conversion
I get you. jokes. ๐
I was going to dive down that rabbit hole. not got around to it yet
I had everything correct but forgot to enable the stream integration. ๐
did you do the 5 buck thing?
yeah, it's the only option anymore but I've been set up with this ever since it came out
there was a bit of fuckyness for a while with the auth but they have it sorted pretty well I feel
Nests are usually for birds, not rabbits
your coyote friends teach you that?
I read it in a book
"A guide to what animals live where, for raccoons"
From the same publisher as "Electronics for raccoons" and "Recycling is a myth, throw everything away, trust me, I am a raccoon"
I can highly recommend all 3 books
Have you read the followup @last cedar ? How I made a fortune selling doormats and how you can never do it
I always buy everything original & remarkably more capable than enough; but I always have this fear of something catching on fire when I'm away from home, especially for longer periods.
How do you guys keep it all under control? I was thinking about getting a smoke detector that I can integrate. Since my place is 15 square meters, thinking it should work effectively.
I also have a camera that detects motion, but it would be all quite late if there's that big of a fire being detected by the camera
15mยฒ? o.0
eh.. dormitory
get a smoke detector. Worry less
there's one already, from the building management; but it's just an alarm and most fellow students ignore it when it rings in some other room
There's no central fire alarm that if a room catches fire everyone evacuates?
Every room has battery-powered smoke detectors; as well as bathrooms and hallways (I know they're battery powered because they check them every spring); other than that there's an alarm switch on the wall in the main entrance, which would be manually activated by someone if it all goes out of control
I'm in Germany, kinda surprised that they came up with just this. In one building there are about 300 students
Here (Aus) it's illegal to not have alarms in every room & common area connected to a central fire system. That activates if any trigger, causing evacuation/ alarm and calling the fire department immediately
Similar to what large office buildings have
It should be just like that everywhere, you never trust a student to do something
or humans really
Thing is, even if I get my own, drilling is not allowed, soo some duct tape maybe :P
That one needed to read the book
Not yet, but I am planning to add to it when I have acquired my millionth doormat
you love dentist appointments?
i really don't mind Mondays. Started to dislike them when I was unhappy with my job, but that's a thing of the past
I don't mind dentist appointments. my dentist is fun
I have never disliked a monday, but I have never hated my job either
the first time you typed 4chan into that URL box
Something I've never done actually! And nor do I intend to
Brb check if ogrish is still up
First Monday I've enjoyed since being on this new project 3 and a bit months ago. But that's because I'm on leave lol
๐คท I enjoy the ones I can work on personal stuff more, but I don't mind if I do my paid for work either
I don't distinguish between personal time and work time, my job is my hobby and I do a lot of non work related stuff while working
Perfect work life balance achieved
It's similar for me. But there's still a difference between full self directed, and having a ticket system
Though it gets a bit nicer once I'm deeper into the project and can pick my tickets better myself
I haven't been in a ticket system for many years
Last time I had on call was probably 2017
Since the company we outsourced to are so shitty, maybe I have to start doing it again
I'm not oncall. But we still got bugs to track
Yuck
I might get involved in the ticket system come think if it, if I take that offer in engineering

Finally got a spot for the 3d printer
@static schooner now whisker is sending me the entire base just to fix the night light issue lol
you would think at some point during the design of this thing they would have minimized the cost in which replacing certain parts.
They do an okay job of making parts available for the 3, like the DFI sensors. Maybe they figure that first, every 4 is still under warranty, and second, they don't want to force new owners to do surgery on their unit
just keeping your current one? Now you just need to order a globe to go with your bonnet and you'll have a second unit ๐
exactly lol
I will say we been dealing with this ever since we got the unit back in june? or whatever
I suspect that your cats don't care about the nightlight at all
likely. but I get a lot of interrupts which I think is due to shadows which the night light might solve
I hadn't thought about that. I've started wiping the sensor area to make sure there's nothing stuck there
Wiping that area cleared my last sensor failure
wipe better, or else there will be sores
Cat litter is so dusty that I feel sympathy for folks working with equipment on the moon.
asbestos you say
Saw an interesting anecdote that moon dust is particularly bad because it's all jagged due there being no wind to round it off
damn I just got an email with return directions. bastards actually want me to send back the other base
they stated the sensors in the archway cannot be replaced separately. soooo.. that blows for the time when out of warranty lol
may have to do some disassembly of my base prior to sticking it in the box for return lol
They should cross ship to let you send it back in the box they send you
They probably want to know what's wrong with it
That's a fantastic workhorse of a laser printer you got there. I'm not even surprised that's still going(?) after 15-20(?) years.
You joke but Sonoma is actually DIY'ing his 3D printer from its parts. That's what the curtain rods and clothespins are for
Squeeze bottles with mechanical clamps
The Incredible Machine you say
The Incredible Machine 2 was also fun
I've spent hundreds of hours playing that
HP LaserJet 1000, isn't it? Got me through high school.
1000 is pretty modern
I remember the square ones
what was is, 850 ?
no
now I need to find it
Oh yes I've had at least one deskjet 850
I recently replaced my inkjet with a M180n, got it for 500NOK used, and new toner cartridges was NOK750
it has only printed 900 pages, so it's basically new
Here's the first printer we had:
Took 5 minutes to warm up, but then it could churn out dozens of pages per hour.
Never had a laserwriter, we did have a copier the size of a dishwasher I remember in the early 90s
Don't think it had printing capabilities though
I can still remember the smell of the toner
Black lungs, eh?
I used to print plastic folders with that one. You had to hurry, though. You could get maybe two out before it got to warm and they started melting.
And when they did you had to hurry even more to clean it up before your parents noticed.
We got the IBM PS\1 in 89, we had the commodore before that, but I don't remember we had a printer before maybe 91\92
that was a HP inkjet one for sure
Toner with a hint of ozone. Good times.
I'm amazed I haven't had cancer twice already
God damn it youtube. It's been recommending me steamed ham videos all day for some reason, and now this pops up in my subscriptions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7PRY8s_ssc

We have an insane cold spell coming next week, prepare for record electric prices

after that it's market price which is at the moment 10x higher and can easily be 25x if it gets colder
I'm playing the game of "chase the energy usage around the house to figure out what's costing me money"
So far I'm pleased to report it's not my home server!
I ordered a couple of smart switches with measuring just for that purpose
I went for more than a couple
But no more sauna for me during early evening :((((
Though I'm annoyed the 8 I'm using right now can't be flashed with tasmotaโso they'll go back once the new replacements arrive
Fun, Unifi locked me out of my offline and isolated instance of my controller because I haven't installed updates.
Fucking idiots.
Not like I need this to work or anything.
It tells me I need to sign in through their stupid cloud service and won't allow direct connections, which I don't use, because that is actually a security issue.
if there would only be a way, to get electricity super cheap yourself..
Northern Finland here so.... ๐

it sadly runs on electricity

make it run on burnable fuels
The prices are really high right now because wind and solar are both producing nothing. It's really a grave we dug for ourselves by trying to buy a nuclear power plant from the French
french..
It was supposed to open in 2009 I think. It's still not producing energy
would probably been faster and cheaper to do it yourself
Nah we bought another one from Russians instead. What could possibly go wrong? Oh wait
Wow UniFi. Lock me out because I didn't install updates then you don't even support the latest release of Debian yet which was released in August 2021.
Being pointlessly difficult isn't 'security'. =/
I thought Unify was supposed to be a good one. Maybe it's because I like the styling on their customer grade stuff
the russian one at least works
just how safely for how long?
Their APs have been solid for me but I hate their controller software
It randomly breaks for no reason at all
It didn't even get to the building stage before the project was halted earlier this year
This is like the third time I've had to reinstall it in the last 2 years
Just hook up to the nearest lamp post and never worry about power usage again! /s

Tbf, my server rack only pulls about 15% of the house usage
Way to have no reasonable upgrade path, Unifi. Instead of just installing an update and having it all upgrade like it should be I get to install another VM to upgrade the Mongo database to an intermediate version because they skipped two major releases for some stupid reason.
Should have just used Windows like a normal person -Unify probably
I would say that computers are about 1/3 of my usage
Pretty crazy tbh
The kind of customer Unifi targets is going to be mixed and far from just Windows.
Yea, I'm irritated by this, heh. This update is taking way longer than it should and it's entirely down to Unifi's gross incompetence.
And for how much was spent on these APs I expect better than this.
Or just people who need features that consumer junk doesn't provide
Not sure how what you're rambling about is relevant.
I am just used to seeing the unifi users complaining about how shit the products are, yet continue to buy them at a premium
I'm strongly considering putting openwrt on them. It seems like all of the issues I've ever had were due to their awful software.
I don't use any of the rest of the Unifi junk, I only have their APs. I've heard their switches and routers are way worse with problems like this.
my openwrt keeps crashing and the HDD connected to it (my "NAS") doesn't stay with its head parked. 3/10 would not recommend
The next step up in APs is generally like 2x-3x the price per unit though, that's more than most prosumers would be able to justify for their houses.
I've had openwrt and ddwrt devices before. I switched from a random hodgepodge of hacked routers to Unifi like 4 years ago because my random 10 year old garbage hacked routers were starting to die.
I wish I'd just bought a couple nice routers and kept with *wrt though.
My Unifi APs (AC LR) started out fine, got really bad for a while where I got sick of them dropping connections and going dead, but have recovered in the last year+ to where I don't think about them anymore
Yea, they finally fixed them with one of the firmware releases earlier this year
I was having to reset my AP AC Pro every 3 or 4 days because it'd start having issues letting clients connect and with packet loss
I used to have a lot of trouble where the 2.4G network would stay functional while the 5G network would be up and have no connectivity
drove me nuts
Same, I had completely disabled 5G for a while.
I think it was the 6.x releases that fixed it and the 5.x releases that had the problem
It's crazy how a company can screw up the firmware on a previously-working device and just leave it for so long.
You're probably right. I used to update all the time to their betas back in the 3.x/4.x timeframe, then they completely hosed their forums and I just stopped tracking their releases. That's one of the reasons the instability was so frustrating - I felt like they completely abandoned the community
I only knew about the changes because I happened to randomly run into a Unifi employee on Discord
I deleted the bookmark to whatever replaced their forum a long time ago
yeah, I have their Discord server in my sidebar, but never visit
I can't remember what but they had some rule in their Discord that seemed BS so I left as soon as I joined.
in any case, I haven't had any significant issues in a long time, so I've been focused on other stuff
also haven't felt the need to upgrade to Wifi6, as not enough stuff supports it yet
if I need bandwidth, I hardwire
I can more than max out my external net connection with my current Wifi setup, and that's all I really care about
I was considering wifi6, I haven't found any APs I'm really interested in though.
People have been reporting problems with the UniFi wifi6 stuff all over
I paid $150 for my 3 wifi6 mesh aps, covers my entire house, plus driveway plus garden, and my last test showed they did 900Mbit throughput
Consumer grade
I paid about that for my two UniFi AC APs when I got them ~4 years ago
At the time none of the consumer-targeted ones supported vlans or radius and Unifi was about the only reasonably priced prosumer option.
Yeah, I have no need for neither VLAN nor radius in my home network, I have dedicated enterprise grade APs for that in my lab
RADIUS was mostly me testing configurations before deploying them at work, VLANs are because I don't trust my IoT devices or any of the crap the people I live with use and want them on their own network.
So, you should have a network lab you say, and less annoying people
or just do proper firewall rules instead
no outgoing for your IoT bois!
That's basically what I do. I enforce the firewall rules per-subnet. Having IoT junk on a separate vlan also lets me isolate it from my non-privileged wifi and things that might get compromised on that network.
I also have client isolation on that network so all the IoT junk is isolated away from the rest of the IoT junk/can only reach my HA server
I just don't buy stuff that isn't local
I don't trust stuff that claims to only be local.

Zigbee would have a hard time reaching the internet for example
and, just block it in the firewall
problem solved
tinfoil off
I'm not running a camera over Zigbee though.
sure, I run the cheapest poe cameras from aliexpress
they never talk to the internet
I got a bunch of cheap-ass Amcrest cameras, unless I restrict them they'll send ~10Mb/s out to some random server in China.
yes
Found a bunch of used ones for $50 on Craigslist
Until they switch their MAC address and get a new lease/IP like Amcrest devices are known to do
Which is really stupid
I have never seen a network device do that outside of very specific firmware upgrades
and I've worked with network products for 20+ years
There's a few forum posts about cameras that use their smart app doing that I found when looking, and mine did it too. ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
it did when it was blocked in firewall ? It changed a mac address out of the blue ?
๐ค
https://amcrest.com/forum/ip-cameras-f18/ad410-changed-to-random-mac--t15703.html https://ipcamtalk.com/threads/wifi-cameras-changing-mac-id.55347/ There's other threads too.
I have 2 EZViz (doorbell and security floodlight), a Yoluke and Amcrest Wifi cameras running on BI5 on a Win10 i7 system. I can get everything working fine, until.
At times, the cameras will drop off. Looking in the router, I have all the cameras assigned a static IP based on MAC ID binding...
People mostly report it changes it out of the blue but I noticed mine doing it when it was blocked from reaching the internet.
Nobody mentions they are blocked from the internet
So I'm guessing they recieved an update, that renumerated the MAC
also the mac address mentioned in the first thread doesn't even exist in a database
Devices can use whatever mac they want, it doesn't have to exist in a database.
It doesn't but it makes it even less plausible
No it doesn't
ok
Says the 'network product user of 20+ years' who can't seem to fathom a device that, gasp, violates a standard.
I'm not a lawyer but I've never heard of any consumer protections that would address something like that.
I think that'd require lawmakers to be way more technologically literate than they are
Our lawmakers are stuck pretending it's 1850 still and all that newfangled technology can be ignored.
Sounds about right
#neuland
Fun, I think another one of my WiZ lights died. Can't get it to go into pairing mode anymore and it won't connect to wifi.
It's odd, the bulb seems to think it's connected already and won't go into pairing mode. I wonder if one of my neighbors claimed it or something...
Sounds like a good pitch for zigbee lights to me, though I have no dog in your fight for the smart home of your choice.
I've only had 2 out of 48 bulbs fail so far, so ~5% failure rate.
Good show, sounds good
And the other one died after like a day so I just exchanged it
The other one the red channel died on
I would have gone with Zigbee but the WiZ bulbs were around 1/4th the price of the comparable Zigbee Hue bulbs.
And there wasn't a lot of consistency in the random Chinese Zigbee bulbs I tried.
yeah, my zigbee bulbs have been $5-9 each
the wiz was $12 on discount, so I wanted to try it as it was rgbw
They're generally around $10 on the shelves here. I've seen them on sale a couple times too.
retail the wiz was $16 I think
