I owed my sister 1,50€ one time and she insisted that i send her the money. So i made about 30 transactions, some cents each. She payed more per transaction line than she got in the end.
Totally worth it

finite atlas

"platinum" and a fancy graphic on it

#

forest edge
#

lol platinum dosen't mean fancy

tidal bronze
#

Lol most my cards are 450 to 700 AF

forest edge
#

they use words like all the time for shit

dusky plank
forest edge
finite atlas
#

i'm recently switched my bank, the old one wanted 108€/year for nothing and the new one does it all for free

clear ferry
#

I haven't paid a card annual fee since 2003, and we haven't had transaction fees since... 97? I think

prisma briar
tidal bronze
forest edge
#

I don't think i have ever had to pay any kind of fee with the exception of using another banks atm in another country since I was old enough to get my own cc

prisma briar
#

My CCs have annual fees, but they're only like $60.

#

And I get way more than that back from them on points

forest edge
#

i don't even have to pay for checks

clear ferry
#

I don't even pay fees for doing transactions abroad anymore I think, that also stopped sometime in the mid 00s

prisma briar
#

I don't even use checks

finite atlas
#

9€ a month fixed

clear ferry
#

Yeah, no bank fee here either @finite atlas

finite atlas
#

time to finally move to norway, huh

clear ferry
prisma briar
#

The only fees we get from banks here are sometimes on out of network ATM withdrawls. I think my bank charges for more than 6 transfers a month out of savings if you've got under a certain amount too.

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge Schwab Bank Visa, best travel debit I've seen. No ATM fees worldwide. Plus money market checking so interest on balance as well.

forest edge
#

checks are great for some things

#

i get interest but certian have atm fee's outside the us

#

i think it's like 5 bucks or something a transaction

tidal bronze
prisma briar
forest edge
#

lol debit card

clear ferry
#

Yikes

tidal bronze
#

I forgot you don't travel

prisma briar
#

That was in 2010

clear ferry
#

Reminds me of when I moved to Ireland in 2007 @prisma briar their online banking was equivalent to our 1997 online banking

forest edge
#

maybe it's an age thing. i keep forgetting most of you all are kids lol

tidal bronze
#

Not everyone can understand

#

One day when you hit 6 million miles we are talking apples

prisma briar
forest edge
#

no thanks.. i don't my ass to look like an airline toliet seat

clear ferry
#

Born in 1945 @prisma briar ?

ashen parrot
#

why would someone take a shit in somebody elses ass

clear ferry
#

You mean fecal transfer?

ashen parrot
#

and more importantly: HOW ^^

clear ferry
#

It is proven effective to treat IBS

prisma briar
clear ferry
#

I'm not joking

ashen parrot
#

yeah Im aware of that

tidal bronze
#

Atx got some experience with IBS. All that whale

ashen parrot
#

but I had the picture in my mind

clear ferry
#

Whale meat is great

ashen parrot
#

and just had to get it out there

forest edge
clear ferry
#

I prefer it in stew rather than steak

tidal bronze
#

No sun. Freezing days makes people do strange things.

ashen parrot
#

my upstairs neighbour won't stop making noise

tidal bronze
#

Ibs?

ashen parrot
#

so Im thinking to introduce him to home automation

#

wiring up contact piezos across the ceiling, and transducer woofers

ashen parrot
prisma briar
#

Drill a hole through the floor into his room, set HA to pump it full of knockout gas whenever he's being loud.

ashen parrot
#

lolol

prisma briar
#

Or pepper spray

ashen parrot
#

trying to do it so that it wont blow back on me

#

I mean I actually WANT him to call the cops

#

come in folks! see those mics, they act as repeaters

tidal bronze
#

2x4?

prisma briar
#

I'm so glad the only thing I hear above me is the occasional squirrel.

clear ferry
#

If I hear anything above me it is the wife in her office or soon my daughter in her new room

ashen parrot
#

I mean I am actually a bit grateful believe it or not.

#

I've never known gratitude for silence til now

forest edge
#

apartment life was shit

#

almost had my first motorcycle stolen while in one eons ago

clear ferry
ashen parrot
#

how

forest edge
#

how they almost steal it?

ashen parrot
#

yeah

forest edge
#

i assume they got interupted after breaking the locking collar

#

and fled

ashen parrot
#

was it outside tied to a post like?

forest edge
#

nah in the parking lot, not tied to anything

ashen parrot
#

oh

#

glad you got to keep it

umbral cliff
ashen parrot
#

My way of getting around people stealing my stuff is to have shit stuff =))

clear ferry
#

I'm pretty sure checks aren't even an option here since the mid 90s @umbral cliff

forest edge
prisma briar
#

My grandparents on my dad's side used to write me checks every year for Christmas and my birthday, but they're both gone now.

ashen parrot
#

I agree

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

No?

ashen parrot
umbral cliff
prisma briar
forest edge
umbral cliff
#

If you're using one it's either posting to a company to pay a bill, or paying someone who has to go to a bank or atm to deposit it

umbral cliff
#

Paying for a bill is slowly being phased out even

forest edge
#

just because it's rare dosen't mean it's not accepted tho

prisma briar
#

You can't use personal checks at a ton of places in the US, even.

forest edge
#

that seems silly to cut off a protentional source of money

umbral cliff
ashen parrot
forest edge
umbral cliff
#

It's not used at all. Why would they bother to keep risk

prisma briar
#

Checks are slow and prone to fraud

forest edge
#

the bank the store uses can

#

in a tourist aspect I never seen a place not accept checks

#

hell I see them use it on shows in other countries like that show the greatest race etc

prisma briar
#

Restaurants around here won't accept non-business checks

umbral cliff
#

Okay looks like auspost will accept cheques for bill payments. That's about as close to a fixed store accepting them

#

If you have a cheque you can go to a bank and get it as cash if you really want. Then use it in a store

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge checks? Seriously?

prisma briar
#

Most places still accept checks for bill payment here. My bill pay services through my bank will send out a check if they don't have any electronic info for the place you're sending it to.

forest edge
#

do they just direct tourist to a bank to cash said check prior to shopping?

umbral cliff
#

Never seen a tourist with a cheque lol. Nor have my friends

forest edge
tidal bronze
#

Huh? You mean zelle

prisma briar
#

Do people still even use traveler's checks? I haven't seen one of those in 20 years.

forest edge
ashen parrot
#

hey did you know debt is older than any other system of payment? I mean it gets a bad rap nowadays cos of the bankers but without debt civilisation couldn't exist. Demand has to come before supply. And it comes in the form of the promise to pay

umbral cliff
tidal bronze
#

Lmao.

forest edge
prisma briar
#

What year did you last travel in?

umbral cliff
#

No that's not how it works. You convert your money to local currency and use that

prisma briar
#

^

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge activate zelle and you don't have to go through this.

umbral cliff
#

Because overseas will not accept USD unless it's a main currency there

forest edge
#

well it didn't use to be like that

prisma briar
#

Even going to Mexico I had to exchange some money because most places didn't accept USD

forest edge
#

but again, tv shows show they still accept them in many places

umbral cliff
#

Here if you try to use USD you'll be pointed towards the nearest money exchange or bank

prisma briar
#

Or just use your credit card and let your bank automatically do the exchange for you

#

Like the rest of civilization

umbral cliff
#

Or debit card

#

Both work

forest edge
#

now see if a debit card is accepted then so should a check

prisma briar
#

LPT: If you're abroad and an ATM asks you if you want the ATM to convert the currency for you hit no. It's going to convert it at an arbitrary rate the ATM has set instead of letting your bank do it at what they determine to be a reasonable market rate.

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

Debit in the US goes over a different network, the same one checks use.

umbral cliff
#

Oh weird

#

Here we have EFTPOS (which is local only, cheap cost for banks, etc) and visa/ mc for debit

forest edge
#

the routing number is all one needs

#

which is on the check

prisma briar
#

If you use a debit card you'll get asked which network to use during checkout. Debit has less protections but lets you do things like get cash back, credit has more protections but costs the merchant a higher transaction handling fee.

umbral cliff
#

Here debit is basically the same as credit for transactions. If I grab my debit I can use it online, overseas, etc all with the same protections since it's a visa

forest edge
#

there has to be a fee for that somewhere

umbral cliff
#

EFTPOS is relatively dead for in store transactions, but still exists in the background as how money is transferred, etc

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

Yea, my debit card has Visa branded on it but I can also process it over a separate debit card processor who will treat it more like a check than a credit card.

umbral cliff
#

Only international currency conversion

clear ferry
#

Bank covers all transaction fees, no yearly bank fees, always included

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

I still find it hard to believe tourist places wouldn't have the means to accept checks

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

Here almost all merchants will prompt you to use debit then have you hit cancel or choose a different option for credit, since debit has lower fees.

ashen parrot
#

whats stopping one from cancelling the check once they're out of town?

umbral cliff
forest edge
prisma briar
#

It's not like they can run an EFT against a US check in the middle of Australia to check it's validity on the spot.

ashen parrot
#

bank would refuse payment and the store would have to find you and sue you

#

who wants to deal with that

forest edge
#

how banks work

prisma briar
#

Checks aren't 'all networked' globally.

forest edge
#

the routing number is all one needs

prisma briar
#

"The magic light box can do it, why isn't it done?!"

umbral cliff
#

Routing numbers are domestic only

forest edge
#

the routing number is no diffrent than a cc number

prisma briar
#

A routing number would mean nothing to someone in Australia.

#

Credit card processing networks are not international.

umbral cliff
#

We have BSB and account numbers here. You don't have those in the USA

prisma briar
#

Are you thinking of Traveler's checks? Because those weren't normal checks.

umbral cliff
#

Travellers may be accepted? But again never seen and none of my friends who've worked retail never got told about them or saw them

#

So probably would be rejected

prisma briar
#

Traveler's checks are sold by Amex and meant to be analogous to cash at places that accept them.

forest edge
#

tourist places

#

I never heard of one that didn't have a means of handling one

prisma briar
#

Yea, a bank or something would take them without issue

finite atlas
#

all i know is, i take my bank card, pay with it and have not encountered a single place that wont take it
even tho its from germany, it got accepted no problem in sweden and norway

ashen parrot
#

I think it's safe to say that if people don't see the money they're used to in the way that they are used to, they'll generally not accept your payment especially while abroad

prisma briar
#

But you're not going to have a lot of luck using a 20USD traveler's check to pay a 10AUD bill.

#

They're 1) not going to do the currency conversion on the spot, 2) not going to do said conversion for free, and 3) probably not even familiar with the traveler's check program since it's not 1995 anymore.

you guys seen that new intel 10nm?

@forest edge so when are you coming this way?

I will have some kale and coconut water ready for ya

One of the best TBH.

ashen parrot

wow, travel. Pretty soon we'll only remember it from books 😄

Or driving cross country. Did it few times, all good except crossing TX 😆

forest edge

i am over driving

i did my fair share

tidal bronze

I hear you, I hate it too now. Heck under 1000 miles a year now.

now if tesla make a coach then maybe

That TX love shines through.

ashen parrot

am very excited about these micromobility cars lately

like citroen ami or renault twizzy

although the latter is a bit overpriced

wtf

ashen parrot

waiting for comma.ai to integrate citroen into their brand compatibility

forest edge

why would you want a rollerskate?

ashen parrot

because of efficiency

forest edge

then walk

ashen parrot

and im just one guy with little need for space

no

forest edge

those small ass cars are dangerous on the highways

ashen parrot

they very cheap also

ofc not on highways lol

wouldn't be caught dead in one of those on the long road

they only have like 40km in them

#

Im just talkin bout city stuff

forest edge
#

i am surprised they don't get auto classified as a utv

ashen parrot

they are

quadbikes

forest edge

which would make them illegal on some roads

ashen parrot
#

basically

#

wouldve gotten one by now but im kind of concerned for safety

#

I hear they are very thin

forest edge
#

as you should be

#

never seen a beer can roll into oncoming traffic?

ashen parrot

:))

believe it or not Ive actually been ran over by cars a couple times while on a bike

so I am somewhat familliar with the impact feeling

those things you are locked in

ashen parrot

hmm thats true

lol, the second time I had jumped off the bike and landed on the person's windshield

#

(I have 100kg)

forest edge

seen friends go down next to me and infront of me but thankfully i never been down

ashen parrot

and they were talking on the phone, while flooring it, with my face on their windshield screaming

umbral cliff
ashen parrot

yes!

#

they took 5 seconds to realize

#

😄

#

thankfully, I wasnt injured

forest edge

a motorcycle trip was the one reason I would have ended up in California @tidal bronze but then by the time I got around to actually maybe making that trip the girls there were no longer blonde and beautiful lol

tidal bronze

Next time, think while riding

#

Damn, gotta get on a flight.

umbral cliff

Domestic flight?

tidal bronze

Yes then INT

you should book a hot air balloon just to mix things up

Then take a zeppelin back home

anyone still smoke?

it's 2022 yo ^^

I believe that

ashen parrot

Im a contrarian btw.

#

oh no, Im in the back end of Europe

Cajun or regular?

#

I love boiled peanuts

ashen parrot

hmm I dont know the difference tbh

green inlet
#

I have a killer crockpot recipe

ashen parrot

whats cajun like, in that how does it differ from classic boiled and salted

green inlet

Regular are just salty. Cajun are spicy. Louisiana style

ashen parrot
#

oh sounds nice, will deffinitely try next time

green inlet

Let me see if I can find my recipe.

I kind of respect that

Im currently tryin to find a good tobacco alternative for de_herb

something to go well with it yknow

I heard Damiana or Passiflora might do the trick but didnt find them around here

@umbral cliff did you guys stop issuing embossed cards yet ?

The embossing isn't useful for anything anymore anyway

Will be weird to see them go, hope the ink on the cards is strong though

They stopped last year here

Question for you lot, for those of you who use wireguard what iptables routing do you use to access any internet

clear ferry
#

I do full tunnel

#

All traffic passes wireguard

#

And opnsense takes care of the rest

umbral cliff
#

I'm setting it up on debian, so far can do handshake, transmit traffic, but nothing is transmitting

clear ferry
#

Ah you need to enable routing

#

If doing it like that

clever mortar
#

I just launched it in Docker

dusky plank
umbral cliff
# clear ferry Ah you need to enable routing

Yeah I am aware, have tried a few options, still doesn't work. Using iptables -A FORWARD -i %i -j ACCEPT; iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ens18 -j MASQUERADE as the PostUp command

#

But maybe I stupid

clear ferry

sudo nano /etc/sysctl.conf

Add the following line at the end of this file.

net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
umbral cliff
clever mortar
#

And pretty much zero config after that

umbral cliff
#

Maybe i give up and use docker

umbral cliff

umbral cliff
#

Yeah it looks friendly and works well to setup. Its just doing the ol wireguard lots of transmit but no recieve

#

And the wg-easy interface is seeing transmission there

#

But nothing is happening

dusky plank
#

lots of send but no receive on client side?

#

like, 0b received?

#

then its firewall and/or authentication going wrong

umbral cliff
#

So auth and firewall working

#

This is also showing that the gui interface is detecting transmission

#

Its just not doing anything

what are you trying to reach with the client

you pay extra for more heat waste and a bigger power bill, nice. sure i will do that

ashen parrot

depends

it's more heat cos its faster

but not twice

Good thing from the new cpus is it makes going for an i5 even more justifiable lol

finite atlas
ashen parrot
#

and get you better efficiency than the last gen

dusky plank
finite atlas
#

intels and amds new overpriced gen is selling as expected, not very well

ashen parrot
#

no,that's what Im saying, that's what they're all saying:
if you have the money, the new stuff is better price/performance

#

as well as efficiency

#

the fact that they draw a lot of power is just the way that they are set to target the draw

finite atlas
#

the newer stuff is worse in price/performance
efficiency only, if you decide to cut on that performance

ashen parrot
#

no man

finite atlas
#

yes man

ashen parrot
#

look it up, numbers dont lie

finite atlas
#

they can still be taken the wrong way

ashen parrot
#

it only seems the old ones are cheaper because they are physically cheaper

#

like not everyone can drop the full 700bucks

dusky plank
#

btw is windows on arm going to be a thing now for sure? since the new surfaces also come with arm I guess so

ashen parrot
#

it's like you're buying 10 crates of juice. It's WAY cheaper but ofc you're dropping a LOT more money in one go

umbral cliff
dusky plank
#

yes it runs fine on my mac on arm but I always saw the warnings that its just a POC

umbral cliff
#

Its PoC on anything other than qualcomm hardware

dusky plank
#

ah

umbral cliff
#

Just because WoA had an exclusivity agreement with them

#

Thats ending soonish iirc

#

So hopefully means WoA on M1/M2 and other chips too

ashen parrot
#

one of the reasons the new chips are so powerful is they're set to reach a set temperature, not a curve based on power draw like before

#

they draw as much as they can until they reach that dreadful 95

#

if you put some good AIO on them then they draw even more. You'll get the same temps

finite atlas
#

price/performance is still on the last gen

ashen parrot
#

yeah

#

price maybe

#

but not performance

finite atlas
#

price per performance
not performance in general

ashen parrot
#

not sure about that

finite atlas
#

totally sure about that

ashen parrot
#

I mean there are fps charts

#

price per frame like

#

and they are way cheaper than last gen

ashen parrot

finite atlas
#

never said that

ashen parrot
#

you get what you pay fore basically

finite atlas

Most stuff using plex/ jellyfin or like blue iris is still benefiting from an intel quicksync cpu, hoping it will change over time

jelly fin does support amd gpu's for transcoding
you just need a amd cpu with a gpu for that :|

last cedar

It isn't a bad thing really, but an r7 doesn't lend itself to that job

I wonder if we might have reached the cross over point

When it connects to the car's bluetooth it'll mute a bunch of things, auto-launch Spotify and start playing music

I just do automations for the car (do not disturb and set to read aloud any texts or signal messages) and when I leave home, turn on vibrate, when I get home turn on sound

The entire "price/performance" metric is completely pointless if you're dealing with realtime workloads that don't parallelize extremely well. There is no "cost effective", only "good enough".

#

When choosing a CPU for those applications you're not worrying about price/performance. You're concerning yourself with what crosses that "good enough" threshold as cheaply as possible. If you need that 7600X it doesn't matter what a 10th gen i9 costs.

tbh i'd ditch the pi entirely like you mentioned

harsh heath

yeah that'd be the ideal but expensive solution for now

forest edge
dusky plank

A loooong usb cable could also do something for you.
One of my pi4‘s makes a cubic meter black hole for 2,4 ghz around it

#

My roborock regularly loses connection when cleaning in that area

harsh heath
#

So my guess is also power issue

#

bought another powered usb hub. Let's see

#

because I couldn't make my setup any jankier xD

last cedar
#

Running ha docker and z2m and mqtt as dockers on a little linux box is sweet tbh

dusky plank
#

what is that plug with the samsung charger in it?

forest edge
#

powering the ssd off the usb on the pi pretty much maxes it out. in fact some ssd's wouldn't even work cause it wouldn't get enough power

#

so the zigbee stick was underpowered

#

like 1.2amp shared across all 4 usb ports

#

I would ditch the ssd and just use a decent sdcard. you can't possibly be wanting to run HA on a pi400 forever.

#

setting that thing for the long haul seems like a waste to me

finite atlas
#

anything intel 3000u or newer is fine

Oh wow that's worse than I thought. I am living in 15qm and have been running it on Pi for a long time on SD. I don't want stuff to break on it's own, so that's why I'm switching to SSD early. Since another SSD is never a waste and Pi400 is enough for me, I couldn't see a better option for the budget I have

harsh heath
forest edge
#

a decent sdcard will likely last you over a year with no issues. at least in time for rpi's to become available again. i am not 100% sure since I don't have one of those but I am willing to bet that keyboard siphons power 24/7 as well which eats into it's max

harsh heath
harsh heath
forest edge

powered hub will solve the issue you have now, but for the long haul I would move away from the 400 lol

harsh heath
forest edge

maybe when supply returns to normal and pi prices drop back down to normal a nice rpi4 2g would be plenty and still cheap

talk about activism, but of a different sort: youtube is now instantly deleting comments about Wumao

#

which is a troll army of political convicts paid to spread proCCP propaganda

#

if you talk about it you get censored

#

and that site is even banned in china

finite atlas
#

never heard of it, never cared about it

ashen parrot

Believe it was referring to global warming and how protest and education hasn't prompted enough drastic change to make a difference. Like destiny just comes back with..

It's a tough change in mindset for tinkerers, but maybe easier for the general public. I never got there with the Nest 'learning' thermostat

your tts will ask you if everything is alright, you haven't touched your beer today
and your insurance will notice your shopping habits while in a pandemic and say "oh sorry that you need a liver transplant but you had a beer too much while in quarantine"
