If your mobo is old enough you need an adapter like that it may not boot off of m.2

Support can be added to some boards that lack it by injecting additional modules into the bios to handle it though. I've never done that for nvme boot support personally.

First three were used and <$100, fourth was used but still like $300, the one in 2020 was new and bought pre-pandemic so I actually ended up making about $300 profit on it, and the one in 2021 was price-gouged so I ended up over-paying about $400.

It's not a run and done (at least last I checked it wasn't) but yea, it does most of the work for you and then you just have to go back over "problem" areas.
