This one should be great for the dual boot drive i was discussing the other day @rotund kernel now just need to find two nvme drives

prisma briar
#

If your mobo is old enough you need an adapter like that it may not boot off of m.2

#

Support can be added to some boards that lack it by injecting additional modules into the bios to handle it though. I've never done that for nvme boot support personally.

prisma briar
#

I recall m.2 and nvme boot support coming around at about the same time, though there were some normal PCI-E nvme drives before.

prisma briar
#

Oh, wait, wtf

#

it wants you to run a sata line from the board to a sata controller on your mobo

#

I guess that'd give full bandwidth at least

#

Why does this exist ._.

clear ferry
#

@prisma briar my DL380 Gen9 has bifurication on one PCIe slot

#

And it defintitivly supports NVMe boot as it is one of the default options 😄

#

So I went with the dual nvme board, instead of the nvme + ngff

prisma briar
#

Should work for the second card you posted.

#

The first one is just dumb.

clear ferry
#

now to find two drives

#

replacing my old R710 + MSA70 with a DL380 Gen9 and a M6720

prisma briar
#

I've had good luck with Samsung SSDs. I've got an Evo 970, 2x SSD 980's, and 2x SSD 980 Pro's for my NVMe drives.

#

And a bunch of 860/870 SATA ones

#

I can almost get 100Gb/s off of my two SSD 980 Pro's I have raided in my desktop if I give it the absolute best-case load

#

It caps out at like 98.5Gb/s

clear ferry
#

That's pretty good

#

The last system I did performance testing on did 75GBps aggreagated, albeit it was 12 nodes with 60 drives each over infiniband and zfs

#

so pretty close to the adapter maximum, since that would be 12x56Gbit cards

prisma briar
#

queue depth 256, that's on a mirror hence the low write.

#

I have a 2x250GB mirror partition for my OS and a 1.5TB striped partition for my Steam games.

clear ferry
#

I just run a single nvme in my laptop, the rest are zfs volumes on servers

#

replacing 3x 4 drive raidz1s with a single 22 drive raidz2 or 2x11 raidz2 soon

prisma briar
#

I have two SSD 980's acting as a fast ssd tier for my Ceph cluster and 6 SATA SSDs acting as a caching tier for my HDDs

clear ferry
#

Keeping my 8x1.92SSD SATA raidz1 though

#

for docker and vms

prisma briar
#

Then I have another 24TB of SMR drives in my backup server

#

Plus like another 10TB in SD cards and HDDs in my video game consoles

dusky plank
#

y'all seriously need to learn how to save space

prisma briar
#

I have plenty of free space

#

Especially since I quit keeping huge collections of TV and movies local

finite atlas
#

encode it in AV1

prisma briar
#

Trimmed down to just shows in progress and a couple movies that are hard to find anywhere.

#

I was considering re-encoding everything to h.265

#

The only things I have that I don't think do that are some old crappy smart tvs from 2015

#

But instead I deleted anything available on streaming services and everything else that I wasn't currently watching/didn't expect to re watch..

finite atlas
#

great that jellyfin can re-encode it on on hardware on fly to whatever file format you need

prisma briar
#

Plex can too if you pay for plex pass

#

I moved away from those apps though. I'm fine with Kodi and a vpn.

finite atlas
#

jellyfin does it for free

prisma briar
#

I just vpn from my phone to my house and use Kodi as if I was local.

#

Honestly, anymore I just don't play media when I'm away from home.

prisma briar
#

I'm in a fairly large city

clear ferry

because nobody bothers replacing docsis in the old apartment buildings in the big cities here usually

prisma briar
#

Yea, everything is still docsis here.

#

They just rolled out docsis 3.1

clear ferry
#

farmland is mostly ftth

#

docsis is mostly dead here, would gander at 15% market share

prisma briar
#

From what I've gathered farmland here is docsis if you're lucky, otherwise you're stuck with dsl/dialup or satellite.

clear ferry
#

and now that we are ripping up all copper all xdsl is dead

prisma briar
#

I think you can still get DSL here?

#

idk, I ripped a chunk of the phone lines out of my house.

#

They were in the way.

clear ferry
#

users who have had connection issues with dsl have been told to order ftth here since 2018

#

they stopped repairing it then

prisma briar
#

I can get ftth here but it looks like it's going to be multiple thousands of dollars to get the fiber ran to my street/house

clear ferry
#

😄

prisma briar
#

It stops like 4 blocks from me

clear ferry
#

yeah, it is all fiber to the slams since at least 2010 so it was inevitable to get rid of the copper

prisma briar
#

Honestly I'd be fine with the 100Mb/s upload though.

#

And ping over docsis is no more than it'd be over fiber.

clear ferry

is 9ms considered good to your nearest speedtest server ?

prisma briar

I've only seen as low as 9ms, which matches the speed of fibre to London

prisma briar

10ms is about 5x higher than speed of light would account for for me.

#

Which is generally where my internet is around.

#

clear ferry

I started buying 3d accelerators in 1996

#

prisma briar
#

I bought one in 2006, 2008 after the first died, 2012, 2015, 2020 and 2021. First three were used and <$100, fourth was used but still like $300, the one in 2020 was new and bought pre-pandemic so I actually ended up making about $300 profit on it, and the one in 2021 was price-gouged so I ended up over-paying about $400.

#

All the graphics cards I had before that were random junk I got, generally from scrapping random trash PCs. I didn't get my first job until 2006.

#

First GPU I recall having as a kid that actually accelerated was a Diamond Stealth II S220 or something like that

#

There's a Voodoo Banshee in the PC next to me

#

It's a dual processor 600MHz Pentium 3 running XP with a Voodoo Banshee.

clear ferry
#

Diamond were my goto cards for a while too in the late 90s

#

had ATI cars before that

#

then a stint of TNT \ TNT2

and back to ATI

prisma briar
#

I've bounced back and forth between AMD/ATI and Nvidia

#

More Nvidia than ATI because they're generally less buggy

dusky plank
#

can you recommend a good multimeter? They all look the same to me

finite atlas
#

they are all the same unless you pay just 10 bucks or hundreds of bucks

dusky plank
#

whats up with the counts? what do they count?

finite atlas
#

they dont really mean much, what do you want to measure and how precise must it be?

dusky plank
#

I guess up to 46v dc / 230v ac, standard things so anything should work then

#

I stay away from high power

finite atlas

Then any device should do it.

I bought 3x TP Link deco that I run in mesh \ bridge mode, cost me $200 and cover my entire house \ driveway \ garden and gives me 1000Mbit rates over wireless

prisma briar

My Unifi ones have good coverage but they don't do speed

I need to see if setting the xt8 in bridge will help. Currently my mesh with 2 xt8 stutters with just 50 devices

#

The latest YouTube Summit event focused heavily on shorts, sadly.

forest edge

I watch the shorts. but was curious why so many of them flat out had the tiktok label watermark and then looked up why so many tiktok people are posting the same cips on youtube

#

it's a double wammy apparently since I guess tiktok also pays out? I don't actually go on tiktok

#

but hell, 1 vid, two sources of income

peak cloud
#

So believe it or not, there are quite a few creators that have gained millions of followers just from YouTube shorts in a fraction of the time that our favorite YouTubers have.

#

Are you familiar with Rhett & Link (Good Mythical Morning)?

#

no i don't subscribe to anything or any of that crap

peak cloud
#

So little?

forest edge
#

some of these people are using a cell phone only, all editing(if you call it that) filming someone taking a shit and uploading it and making money.. yes so little

peak cloud
#

It looks like so little to the viewer, but yet the viewer is heavily engaged. It takes HOURS upon HOURS for most creators to film a video before they post it.

forest edge
#

I get that, for some

#

but they are not all like that

peak cloud
#

These days a cell phone camera is pretty damn good.

I've seen strange igmp packets with Schneider electric building automation stuff, they don't have a Mac address while booting and set the Mac address in software after boot is complete, which makes 802.1x useless, and also do gratuitous ARP packets

glacial knot
#

huh, why does that make 802.1X useless? They should only do that once they are up far enough to set the mac already either way

clear ferry
#

Nope, the 802.1x happens when the port comes online, and a lot of customer environments don't want to do repeats of it unless the link goes down

#

And when port comes online they have no mac

#

The Mac is 00:00:00:00:00:00

#

Or was it all FFs

glacial knot
#

all FFs should be treated as multicast, not valid single cast

#

they still need to be var enough in software to negotiate anything on the link for 802.1X to work. So I'd expect them to be far enough to set the mac already as well o.0

clear ferry
#

Best part, they are Poe devices, so if you shutdown the port or try to replug it it just starts the same process all over

The port comes up the second you plug the cable in, the Mac isn't set for at least 30s after that

Jack heads to Amsterdam for an exclusive first ride/drive of the remarkable BeTriton. Part e-bike, part boat, part camper, it might just be one of the strangest vehicles we've ever featured on the Fully Charged Show. But is it real? Does it work? Will it float?? We put a very large man in it and pushed him out to sea to find out.

gosh dangit

#

I pulled out one of my guitars

#

playing guitar for the first time in probably 2 years

#

and I'm already gettiing pretty far on the Time solo

ashen parrot
#

cmon, I could pull that one off after 6 months from starting

clear ferry
#

I've played guitar for 31 years

#

😄

#

I've never tired until tonight

ashen parrot
#

that is a whole nother matter

#

I know exactly what you mean

#

even though I dnn't have your experience

clear ferry
#

my fingers are already sore after a long break

#

I've played guitar for 31, bass for 23, piano for 10 and drums for 5

#

I'm still shit

ashen parrot
#

nice

#

well, not the shit part

#

I find that excelling at stuff is not worth it rly

#

much more advantageous to be a dillettante

clear ferry
#

I'm average in most aspects, but I'm active in hundreds of aspects

#

my manager loves this one trick

#

I was supposed to play a concert at the bellagio a few years ago though, but it ended up being the Fira in Barcelona instead, at least I can say I've been on tour 😦

ashen parrot
#

ooh

#

thats great, never gotten that far

#

just a couple gigs

#

after 20 years =))

#

well 29 to be precise

glacial knot
#

yea, doing a lot of things good is often better than doing something perfect

clear ferry
#

I've played in .... maybe 5 different bands, I prefer playing alone though

#

#atxlounge right now

ashen parrot
#

I switched to producing but even that's gone to shit lately

#

noice

glacial knot
#

popOS? 😮

ashen parrot
#

havent got my studio set up atm

clear ferry
#

Popos just works, I had so many issues with Ubuntu lately

clear ferry
#

I'm a multi instrumentalist at least

#

I've played the guitar with my hands while playing my bass with my feet one time

#

That worked surprisingly well

#

And the synth was programmed for a background overlay

#

have to say I'm pleasantly suprised having pulled off around 50% of the Time solo in less than 30 minutes

ashen parrot
#

Mah home made alchemical midi drum pads

clear ferry
#

I should get back to playing more

#

piezo elements ? @ashen parrot

ashen parrot
#

I used cigarette tin boxes, rubber and old phone earplugs

#

piezo wouldve been way better, yes

#

but they're just earphones glued inside, and reversely connected to the rca plug

#

so that they act as mics

clear ferry
#

hah

#

wtf

#

that is so yanky

ashen parrot
#

and then in the software, when the line level passes a db threshold, it sends a midi note

clear ferry
#

reminds me of when my microphone broke in a RTCW tournament once, I grabbed an old 70s speaker and wired it into my mic port, yelled at my crotch to get to my team mates

glacial knot
#

😂 old man yelling at his crotch

clear ferry
#

I wasn't old at the time

#

this was.... in 2004 ?

#

must have been

European RTCW:ET Tourament

#

I was still in college

ashen parrot
#

w00t

#

did that game have a good player count?

clear ferry
#

yes

#

There was always servers packed all over europe

#

and low latency

ashen parrot
#

I loved the SP part but never got to play the multi

clear ferry
#

RTCW multi was eh, RTCW:ET was great

ashen parrot
#

oh

clear ferry
#

I'm a medic

#

Air support

ashen parrot
#

I thought et was the multiplayer of rtcw

clear ferry
#

We need an engineer

ashen parrot

clear ferry

RTCW:ET was free afaik

What's rtcw?

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a free and open-source multiplayer first-person shooter video game within the Wolfenstein series.[1][2] It was originally planned to be released as a commercial expansion pack to Return to Castle Wolfenstein and later as a standalone game. However, due to problems with the single-player aspect, the multiplayer portion was released on 29 May 2003 as a freeware standalone game.[3] In January 2004, the source code for the game logic (not the game engine) was released to the benefit of its modding community.[4]

#

Yeah, it was not part of RTCW

glacial knot
clear ferry
#

Wat nazis, Ich never heard of zem

ashen parrot
#

yeah its a tough issue cos they still got neonazis

clear ferry
#

Fun fact, I played it originally on Windows 2003 server, I actually got 15fps more in W2003 and better latency than I did in XP

#

Then I switched to fedora Core 2

glacial knot
#

Well, yes. Since back then the rules on prohibited insignia were still tighter than today
And iirc video games were not considered art, so it didn't qualify for the exceptions

ashen parrot
#

so their choice is either the shame that's going on via the legislation you mentioned, or just let them do their thing once again

clear ferry
#

I always loved the played created videos back then of RTCW and Quake

#

I did do some after effects at the time, but I was never any good

ashen parrot
#

wow

#

LAGGER

#

there's something I've not thought about in a long while

glacial knot
#

Pfft, blaming lag before it was cool

clear ferry
#

I'm so used to infiniband now that anything above 0.02ms is shite ping

#

😄

glacial knot
#

That's why you run that exchange in your garage

clear ferry
#

You mean this ?

#

I'm still waiting for my new disk shelf and new drives 😦

ashen parrot
#

whats that cabinet

clear ferry
#

The rack ?

glacial knot
#

And a new rack? Looks pretty full

ashen parrot
#

yeah soz

clear ferry
#

It's just a panel-less 42u HP 10k rack

ashen parrot
#

yeah I dont know what that is

clear ferry
ashen parrot
#

hey Im trying to find out this thing, I can't remember the name of a type of network from the late 00's

#

it was basically a sort of internet between computers

#

so that you wouldnt need an isp

clear ferry
#

You mean like the internet ?

ashen parrot
#

had a helicopter name to it

clear ferry
#

wtf

ashen parrot
#

apache or blackhawk something

#

they've actually built an ISP on this type of tech currently

#

but for the life of me I can't remember the name

clear ferry
#

I'm gonna need something more here I think

ashen parrot
#

can find a vid though

clear ferry
#

I've worked in tech for 20 years, that doesn't ring a bell 😄

ashen parrot
clear ferry
#

Reminds me of radiolinks

#

which were hip in the late 90s early 00s

ashen parrot
#

it's basically hopping in line of sight

#

from antenna to antenna

clear ferry
#

yes, we did that, albeit it was p2p

ashen parrot
#

yeah man

#

that's what Im talking about

#

but it was like a standard

#

open source ofc

#

eh, it'll come to me

#

eventually

#

once it's too late, most likely %%

clear ferry
#

we had ISP offerings of it, and I deployed it for multiple lan parties between 99-02

#

Using these kind of antennas

#

Sucked when it rained

#

or snowed

#

or it moved 0.1mm

#

or a seagull flew past

#

or, basically anytime

glacial knot
#

Or when it's a super cold day. Or super warm

#

Though I guess these aren't as precise as laser link

forest edge
ashen parrot
#

No

#

Totally not ad hoc

forest edge
#

in the early years it was all the fad with like psp

#

before then it was kali

ashen parrot
#

As hoc means on the fly, literally

#

Or spontaneously, if you will

#

"On the spot"

#

Like whenever you hook up 2 computers together using just a cable, or other such local configurations

forest edge
#

then no idea. wasn't a whole lot of ways to share data between pc's in the early days outside a patch cable that also sounded like a helicopter name lol

ashen parrot
#

What I was saying was about an open source standard

forest edge
#

crossover

#

i mean

ashen parrot
#

No, I used the cable reference to better portray the premise of ad hoc
