Is that why the consumption is so high?
You have 3 heat pumps
Is that unusual for Norwegians?
I just want an easy ability to monitor my usage per circuit. Probably going to have to sort something out with where the fuse board is and stick something in the wall
living room one is on all year, bedroom one is only on in summer, attic one is only on in very cold months
most norwegian homes have 1-2 heat pumps in my experience
Clamp meters are super lit
I got the third one because the bedroom is unlivable in summer
paid 1000 for the pump, 3000 for installation
I have been considering one that I can use for both floors....
Cellar is pulling air, and I can recycle heat and cool
Yeah just trying to fit a clamp meter inside the wall though lol. Or at least surrounding the board
Just replace every fuse with a smart fuse
Australian electricians hate this one trick
Do it in the fuse box
Or say a smart plug with consumption measurement for thr washing machine, for example
I had found a 14 channel one
Excuse me
For the fuse box
Oh, I thought you had a smart plug with 14 channels
You are excused
I only have like 5 circuits lol
I doubt there's any room. It's just the box with the RCDs. There's no other external box
We have 3 phase power, power in, wolar and water heater would be 9 clamps alone!
Nice, my new roborock fan motor already is shipped
There is probably a better way to do it at that point
You can check VERY CAREFULLY
I need an electrician out anyway, so might get him to look at it for me
I will happily touch anything else, except the board 😂
Thr board is probably the safest bit
yeah hi I'm australian, yeah, I need an electrician over here tomorrow, yeah, I'm gonna plug my computer from one socket to another, yeah that's right, yes sir
It ia the shiny bits that are dangerous 🤣
Keep 1 hand in your pocket and you shouldn't die
No current going over your heart if you do mess up
thats a good rule for both electrics and mission critical systems and storage
Oh, and look with your eyes, not your fingers
Got it, one hand holding earth, the other holding live what next
depends on if you've got bare feet on the ground 🙂
I'll use my nose too 😂
sweaty bear feet
Lick the copper on a blue cable
No, wait, don't lick
Oh dear
Oooooh bare feet
To this day I still don't know if americans actually wear shoes indoors
Maybe HA can help them reach enlightenment with indoors-shoes-alerts...
And consequences such as locking the fridge while the shoes are still on
I was expecting a goatse reference somewhere in there... I am disappointed.
Wonder if there are any keypads that are ZigBee or tasmota flashable
Drachenfest is one of the biggest LARP events in the world - with more than 5000 people attending every year.
LARP is short for "Live Action Roleplay". It's a hobby of thousands worldwide and is basically like playing video games but in real life. 😁
Sounds interesting? Well then here is everything you need to know about Drachenfest LARP in Ger...
I like how the name of the camps just like goes off the rails lol
i think one of them was just the sneeze sound spelled out
It is only temporary
Gotta keep the fear of them turning our power off at the forefront of our minds
The greedy bastards
Only in Sweden you see
Germany finally has plenty of sunshine and wind again.
Give it like 15 minutes before putting up 20 million turbines extra is the solution to our energy problems, because the wind is blowing 1 day
No, no more nuclear, there were accidents like 40 years ago, can't have that (yes I know about Fukushima, it was piss poor design)
We clearly need more wind turbines so we can have enough electric about 2 times per month
And store the energy in giant batteries that are the size of jupiter
I am not bitter btw
You mean oberfails battery pack
I get the feeling that as I get older, more and more people are just fucking you over, your whole life.
And I don't know if it is
-
because I didn't notice before
-
they are even worse than before
-
I am more vulnerable to it (being house owner more ways to get fucked over)
Probably all 3

would be so nice to just keep one in the barn so I wouldn't have to drive out there as much
weird counter cannot accept floats
The issue with nuclear is the sheer incompetence and corruptness of our government and of the citizens in germany.
Just look at major building projects like the "Berliner Flughafen" https://www.flughafen-berlin-kosten.de/
Planned 2006 to cost 2.000.000.000€ and to be finished by 2011. Now it has cost already 3 times that amount and still isn't open 11 years later.
We also have plenty of absolute retarded people, especially Bavarians, who complain about Windmills and HV Power Lines making them sick but also complain about the highest electricity prices in the country.
Now just imagine how apeshit people would go, if just a single new nuclear power plant would be planned years after we wanted to fully drop out of it and how much money would be wasted on it, just so it looks cool instead of being functional.
Small and "decentralized" windmills are much easier to get planned & approved by all useless paper work stations.
Thankfully it only takes about 5 minutes to build a new one, so we are not screwed for the next 20 years.
/s
It is very easy to say it now, but if we had gone for electric cars from the start, not ICE, we might have some decent batteries by now 🙂
grrr, I thought my new 1000\1000 was gonna arrive this week
but they have backlog of 4 weeks
Good think I have time to upgrade my storage then
need to nag that customer that was throwing out a disk shelf
and fly cross country to pickup those 22 drives
Only four weeks, that sounds ... pretty good
Only because they have backlog
First time I got FTTH it was 3 weeks from order to install in 2004
in 2016 it was less than 2 weeks from confirmation of deployment to install
Now I only need their CPE stuff sent to me, which they apparently have backlogs of due to chip shortage
the new CPE has 10G ports too
If we had went for electric cars instead of ICE, i doubt norway and sweden would be that rich
Meatballs have always been in demand though
oh yes
There is at least 20 EV charge points at my local IKEA
And they did deliver all goods to car before
so you could refuel and get meatballs delivered to the car
Looking for UPS battery backup recommendations in the US. My current one for my desk is on its last legs.
replace the battery and you are good to go
Ups batteries are really cheap in the us
Battery shark is popular I've seen
The solo of freebird is really easy, even if it is very emotional
I should learn it sometime
Finding a replacement is pretty easy and ridiculously cheap. Don't just google a replacement for your UPS model number, pull the battery, peel off any top brand labels on the battery to find what it truly is and look up a replacement for that on amazon. Most manufactures use an existing battery made by and for something else, and then slap their own branding label literally on top of it's original manufactured printing.
That's incredibly slow
Unless you mean they actually came to run the cable
anyone excited to prime day 2.0?
I quit using Amazon after realizing they'd screwed up 10% of my orders so far this year and every time I had to call in and argue with their customer service people for an hour to get it resolved.
What did they do
They just suck at actually getting packages to my door.
Only if there's anything interesting on sale which there often isn't
Mostly it was packages delivered to other houses in my neighborhood or packages getting lost then I'd have to do the wait X days to request a refund BS.
I didn't even really mind that packages were getting screwed up, but I did mind that Amazon makes it such a pain in the ass and take forever to get things sorted when they do.
I ordered that e-ink screen for the remote I'm building from Amazon, they lost it on delivery twice before I gave up and ordered it off of eBay. Then they tried denying me the refund because they never received the item back.
I ended up just filing a chargeback on that one. They kept telling me they'd file a ticket for the appropriate team to look into it, after two weeks of no change I went through my bank instead.
If you've done a chargeback chances are you can never use Amazon again anyway. Usually these places have rules of if you do a chargeback they'll refuse to do business with you
They didn't, but I wouldn't really care if they did.
They sent me a nastygram saying the chargeback was just but asking me to continue filing pointless tickets in the future instead of actually getting my money back.
"We received your email about order XXX. We have researched this matter and confirmed that the dispute in question has been resolved between Amazon.com and your card issuer, in your favor.
Please contact your card issuer for more information about reimbursement for this purchase. In the future, file an A-to-z Guarantee claim to resolve any issues related to Amazon Marketplace purchases before contacting your card issuer."
That A-Z claim being something I'd filed like 5 times already on the same transaction.
there is almost always one really good thing at a really good price. problem is, it's usually a lightning deal and it sells out real quick. hell I have seen shit go so fast that websites that do the reporting on the deals completely miss it was even a thing
like that sony android tv I saw a couple of years ago
Maybe Amazon USA. Amazon AU is still shit. Amazon have put very little effort into it. Most of the stuff on it is just eBay stuff except import from USA or china whilst eBay sellers have it local
Yea, they do that. They'll have 10 of an item in stock then put it front and center in all their advertisements.
I do notice there is a vast difference. between countries. I see crap on the EU amazon that isn't even an option for us etc. You would think in today's world it would be more universal.. hell I buy crap shipped from china all the damn time on there. still best place to get small engine rebuild carb kits
I find that things that ship from China on Amazon can often be had for cheaper with similar shipping time on Aliexpress.
Even the different countries within the EU shit varies a lot. That's one market legally and they can't even have consistent stock lol
gross.. I want my shit this centrury tyvm lol
Yeah because it's the same product just with a convenience markup lol
Only time I use Amazon is if it has the next day or 2 day delivery with prime for the item I want and if I need that speed. Otherwise eBay for 99% of that stuff
I've definitely had stuff off of Amazon take forever before.
Sometimes Amazon if it's a USA import and it means it's quick and cheap
ebay is sketchy anymore
they do not have as good as a buyers protection system setup
I generally have good luck on eBay, though I did just have two different incorrect packages show up today. >.>
lol
Ordered a toslink<->coax adapter, got a toslink input switcher, ordered an RGBWW LED light strip and only got an RGBW one.
It's still sided towards the customer at least
The first one I think was just mispackaged, but looking at the listing for the second one closer the seller thought that RGBWW was just rgb+warm white, not rgb+white+warm white.
The latter is acceptable level of error I say
Like can also just be a misread of the packet
Yea, as long as they fix it without giving me a hassle I don't care.
Mistakes happen, it's when a company makes it pointlessly difficult to get their mistakes resolved that I have a problem.
amazon has always been good to me. course i have a dist nearby and they partner with kohls so any returns or refunds I just take there and don't have to deal with boxing/shipping etc
chewy is also another really awesome site but for pets
if that's an option outside the us. i don't know
There was one of those Amazon 4 star stores near me I used to go to for returns
But I think it closed
if you have a Kohls you can take it there
The only Kohls I knew of is closed.
I think you can also take Amazon returns to a UPS store and they'll package them for you?
yea something like that
idk, my issue with Amazon wasn't generally needing to return things, it was just not getting them to begin with.
but don't think it's the same as like a legit return place like Kohls
ah
well 95% of the crap i order comes within 1-3 days.. only stuff from china can take a few weeks
i dunno how i haven't been invited to amazon vine yet
pisses me off
They kept delivering my stuff to wrong houses throughout my neighborhood, sometimes I'd be able to find it by driving down my block, sometimes not. I always felt like a creep going and taking my packages off of other peoples' porches though.
yea thats sketchy.. i wouldn't do that even if i knew it was my package lol
They also just kept losing stuff and it'd just never show up, then they'd just refund me after a week.
sounds like you got the short end of the stick
But when they didn't auto refund things it was absurdly tedious to get them to fix it.
Yea, I've lived in other places and not had these issues with Amazon.
if you live somewhere where they don't have their own dedicated drivers and no distribution nearby I could see it not being as nice as I experince
There's a distro hub maybe 10 miles from me
hell chewy just tells you to keep the item and still refunds you the money
And another like 100 miles from me
amazon use to do that too, think they still do on some things
I ordered an office chair from them that had a broken mechanism out of the box and they refunded it for me without requiring me to ship it back.
I gave it to a friend who has a welder.
And he welded the broken mechanism into a solid chunk so it just didn't recline at all anymore, but was in a usable upright position.
Yes they did
why are phones just getting bigger and bigger
Now that a new James bond character will be cast, perhaps we should make the next movie plot happen in Russia, we haven't had a Soviet bond movie in quite a few years
People only want large phones
The only solution is for humans to evolve larger hands
I have huge hands, as such I need huge phones
people want longer battery life since they are glued to the damn things. the size is just the means to accommodate it
and it's fine to offer a phablet option, but the standard is what I am refering to and that is getting bigger every year
I still miss my old Sony Ericsson Pxx0s they were great fun, but the Huawei Mate 7 was also great fun
the new pixel 7 plain jane is the same size as previous XL variants of pixel phones lol
My current Oneplus 8 pro is just right, just wish it wasn't curved
Wait really. The fuck that's huge
Battery is kinda pointless now (for a larger one). My z flip 4 is 'bad battery life' by all standards, but it lasts me basically a day with normal usage
Yeah, my 4a has a battery that sees me through more than a day of typical use. I don't need something with twice the battery capacity, and twice the power draw from the screen
yea that's the new norm, that's why I said what I said lol
Yeah I didn't realise they increased the size like that
I barely look at battery life now because most are decent
are you participating in a chess tournament soon?
you don't want it in norway where you could play the norwegian part of boris?
Hi.. I have weired issue when accessing few websites.... For example yts.mx.. It opens sometime and sometimes it does not and shows this error... Is their any fix for it to run stably... I run adblock with custom dns
while this is OT I doubt anyone here is going to answer your question.
even a quick background search of yts.mx shows that site is riddled with malware etc lol
Would you pay for and eat a 3D printed burger?
Is your client time correct? And have you tried another browser?
Depends on what it's printed out of.
Maybe you could shove a bunch of ground beef in a 3D printer and have it cook it as it extrudes
That error is between Cloudflare and the website's servers. The website needs to fix their stuff. Nothing for you to do.
Eh, SSL handshake can be between proxy and client too
That would give a browser error screen, not Cloudflare's
police? yes, these comments there ^^
That page is returned by Cloudflare and his browser is showing it trusts the SSL cert being provided. The two green checks are on his browser and Cloudflare, the X is over the website's server. It's an issue between Cloudflare and the target server. Probably they have certificate validation enabled on Cloudflare and the cert on their website expired.
If they were using something like nginx instead of Cloudflare as a reverse proxy it'd show a 502 bad gateway error there.
(HTTP 525 is a cloudflare-specific response code)
Yep
If you're constantly getting those errors on sites you wouldn't expect them from (search engines, social media, banks, etc...) then you may have malware that's redirecting you to a broken or shut down site.
Or your DNS adblocker is redirecting you somewhere
only with very few websites i have this issue...these websites are blocked by my isp so with dns it kind of works but not everytime not is it somthing to do with adguard dns bug?
I can only vaguely guess what is causing it.
bigger = better
whats your guesss?
i lose acess to ha server when i turn on vpn..any way yo fix this with windows firewall?
where do you run HA
on a raspberry pi ofc
virtual box in same windows machine
Lol this thread about unexpected raccoon sexy times: https://twitter.com/rumpfshaker/status/1578279330374946816?s=46&t=Bpbv5Sbf0EhZX-gf6bE5EA
Finally an EV that looks like a normal car
normal car? looks like a SUV to me
Looks just as boring as a Honda usually is
But there are a lot of normal looking EVs from the Chinese market
I think we're already a few years past the point where they all look like concept cars
The dashboards are still a little over the top
The Hongqi looks strange, but I wouldn't say it doesn't look like a lot of other modern cars
The dashbord of the Mercedes EQS is fucking horrible, with a seperate screen for the passenger
I think that's just evolution of the dash and not EV-specific though
Most of the EV half suv stuff is fucking horrid when it comes to comfort and blocking view points
Like the Mustang Mach-E
Polestar-2 was also a letdown tbh
The original was fine
Even if the ID3 looks cheap it actually feels more premium
But it is way overpriced
The only really wild designs I've seen are either from Hyundai (who has kinda made it a thing across all their product lines, electric or not, see: current gen Tucson, Santa Cruz and anything Genesis)
Or Tesla, which, well, it's Tesla
There's some really wild trucks like the Hummer and the R1T, but then at the same time there's the much more conservative F150 Lightning and Silverado EV (and frankly, the R1T isn't that weird)
The annoying thing about Tesla is that all the cars really look the same, until you see them from an angle
Most radical EV design I've seen is probably the Honda e
Which is just ridiculous
Another infuriating thing is that the EV makers are doing features as a service, like a $100k etron charging you $2 a month for adaptive matrix lights
That's definitely not an EV specific thing, BMW has been doing similar bullshit on gas and diesel cars for some time
I can never get any privacy
Complete BS
I thought the Honda e was a concept car, lol. It looks like a Kei-ified Challenger
I would just not buy
Not that I am, or ever will be in a position to buy one of those
I have a 2nd gen Volt right now and I'm gonna ride it out until I can get a used electric truck for less than two limbs
Never seen it on anything but EVs
https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/12/23204950/bmw-subscriptions-microtransactions-heated-seats-feature
For more recent than I thought... Regardless, not an EV thing. Seems to be more a thing for premium/luxury German cars
Yeah, i saw that, but I think it is only for select markets and not implemented yet
But it comes from EVs
VAG will not produce ICE cars from 2025 onwards, expected BMW to do the same
Oh, I forgot about the "we took the remote start button off your fob... Because you can do it in the app... Which you have to pay a subscription for" which Ford and GM have been doing on literally everything they make
Btw "active matrix headlights" are illegal in the US so if you want to break it up by market, well.
Volvo does it better, as long as your car has a valid warranty (7 years) or has been to service after year 7 the app is active
Really? Matrix headlights are amazing
Yeah. NHTSA has really stupid rules about what headlights can and can't do
Last i checked the etron did micro transactions on headlights, engine heater, map packs, and heated windscreen
I think it was
Need to verify
Remote start aside, I've heard of literally only three companies doing it, and all three have a reputation for anticonsumer bullshit 🤷
Mercedes were losing large sales here since they didn't jump the EV bandwagon
Had to lay off a lot of people
Last number I saw was 6.5/10 cars sold are now ev, and 8.5/10 are EV or hybrid
Guessing it will be 9/10 by 2025
New, maybe. The gas powered trade-ins most certainly aren't leaving the road.
Not yet no, Norway has a tendency to keep cars for 15+ years
But the EV trade in has been so fast the average car age has dropped tremendously
In the US average car age is only going up
Probably closer to 15-20 here
Yeah I was off on that. But it's been consistently rising for the past 20 years. In the 90s it was like, 8
I love the automatic Matrix lights on the Volvo, great in winter
And I think that trend will only accelerate. Fast charging infrastructure is just not gonna develop fast enough, so people are gonna be willing to do more and more expensive repairs on ICE cars that can no longer be replaced
We have enough fast chargers, and home chargers are inexpensive, but we have been building them with national funds for 10+ years
The biggest issue is usually the introduction of new standards constantly
You also have a tiny fraction the geography to cover
Just scale it
Population density is an issue too
It's very simple, nothing is tied to the entire vastness of the country
You can drive a hundred miles along some major roads and not see more than two houses within eyeshot of each other
5% of the population lives in northern parts with 7 months winters and they have no issues with charging infrastructure either being sparsely populated
What is that in persons per square mi/km?
3 per square kilometer
The red area here
Comparatively the capital has 3857 per square kilometer
Hmm, that's similar to most of upper Michigan
I'm trying to work out a comparison
What is the fast charging availability like in that area?
Should be updated with latest
And everyone that buys an EV has a charging port at home too
Modern houses are 3ph 400v distribution, so can get decent chargers
Well yeah for around town you just charge at home. I'm looking at traveling, for vacation or business
Even in the US, every house has a 240v split phase service, 7kW is completely doable
The issue in the US is, if you need to go more than 200mi and it's not between major cities, you'll likely have to check into a hotel just to charge
Yeah, 200miles is peanuts with modern EVs and charging
Even my low end leaf does 400km, and it takes 40 minutes to top it up at a charge point
The Mercedes EQS was rated for 700 now I think
It's just gonna go up
Even a huge car like the Hongqi does 500+ without issues
No, you need to drive there 200mi and there's level 2 at best when you get there, and now you have to get back.
And you can forget about bringing your boat.
I suspect that an EV is quite manageable if you prepare and aren't caught offguard, but I sometimes find myself late to something, realize that I'm nearly out of gas, and am at most 5-10mins away from a full tank
Yes, if you need to drive 200mi (350km) and you have a car with 500km range, you just need to charge either with a type 2 and it will be full when you leave or charge with a regular wall transformer for the duration of your stay and you probably have enough power to get back
Even the model 3 is 600+ these days
Same is the BMW ix which is a huge car
Does type 2 mean something different there? Because you're not getting a full charge in under 8 hours on level 2
We do up to 11kw on type 2
So roughly 2h to charge 20kwh according to the sheet, and 10h if you think about a 80kwh battery
We even do 22kw it seems with three phase charger box and type 2
So half that time on the fastest ones
But depending on car model, chademo might be a better option for the nissan owners
Okay, 240V 50A is 12kw, and that's about the limit for the US. J1772 doesn't have provisions for three phase. So I think there's a piece of the picture missing here
480V three phase grid is a thing in industrial and commercial areas in the US, I think that's typically the service to the equipment at fast charging locations
Yes, it is both in homes and charge stations here
We swapped to 400v default in the 90s
The paradigm changes because you (should) charge at home. Imagine starting each day with a full tank automatically without having to even think about it
yes, that's the change in mindset
I charge the Volvo every night, and the nissan once or twice a month, very manageable, and a lot cheaper than gas
You just plug in when you park at home, not to prepare for anything but just because that's the routine, get home, plug in. You only think about charging if you plan to spend 4+ hours in the car in a single day
Last month was $80 in charging, but we also have 850% higher power prices than usual
My smart house only charges when it is cheap
Apparently if I look at the price difference between the cheapest power in 2020 and the most expensive in 2022 the difference is 23233%
According to a calculator, I suck at math
For reference the cheapest power I had in 2020 was 0.0028, most expensive in 2022 was 0.65, in dollars
Actually, I've had peaks of 0.79
? charges what?
like a rhino
More likely a yak
Same one that rang the doorbell to deliver a package
We have moskus
They also have you
this made me picture him hooking jumper cables to a yak lol
These electrification mandates are going too far
those changli things are not fords
even if they brand the name
those mandates are sadly needed, who else is gonna push for electrification and more efficient stuff?
they say next year europe is going to melt
and with fewer than 10% of the homes having air conditioning there will be a super spike in heat related deaths
it's crazy. you all are so hell bent on controlling emissions from standard air conditioners that even while people die off from heat stroke in apartments the mandate to refuse window units remains in effect
at least this winters scramble in attempt to improve the efficiency of standard air conditioners to be able to implement those over heat pumps which apparently are not going to be good enough will yield some improvements for us lol
i didn't quite realize air conditioning was such a western thing
europe has historically had an insanely mild climate. Mild winters, mild summers, just no serious weather in general
the US is... diverse, to put it mildly, but every American yawns at some form of storm that would be majorly disruptive to most European countries
while we get floods, we don't really get tsunami's
guess hurricanes provide that and so much more lol
_laughs in 16 feet snow winters _
damn, vecna even hit germany
But the cardboard mobile homes in the us would surely handle that just as well @dusky plank

You honestly think that's something to laugh about?
i do, snow is awesome
Yes for 2 days, over a glass of whiskey.
google sucks... I have a bunch of screws with a bumpy/wavy surface on the underneath of the head (what rests on top of the board) instead of being flat. And I can't find the term for it or why it's like that

Cool, finally got the replacement touchscreen in for the remote I'm making.
Heh, just noticed the eBay seller I bought it from was 'SSHZDQYDYWDHZHDDQ'
Either someone just randomly mashed their keyboard or the Chinese have taken their acronym game to another level.
Hm, I've had no issues with SSD from AliExpress on a minicomputer, curious if I should try to order two m2 ssds and try them out for boot
make sure to write random data over their entire capacity and read it back first
I haven't tried AliExpress ones but I bought some $7 128GB SSDs from Micro Center that are still going strong 4ish years later.
Well, the one I still have in use.
They've been reliable but they still perform like ass.
I need 256 or 512 i feel, currently using 200 of my 300GB drives
for a moment I thought you have 200 drives D:
inlands are gross
all of thier inhouse sd cards etc are inlands. it's their house brand. cheap as hell but just as gross
My dad snagged an old disk array that was getting trashed from a training lab where he used to work, we had 120 250GB SATA1 drives in our garage for a while.
@clear ferryyou set up the shaper in opnsense didn't you?
Just remembered someone saying EVs look so weird, i just realized the Tesla looks like something you might draw if someone told you to draw a Porsche based only on verbal description and you had very little shared language
the cybertruck is just a low poly render of a modern SUV
also, Tesla looks way better in black
Nintendo 64 pick up
no idea why so many Tesla drivers here drive white cars
White cars are generally horrible
I like mud brown/grey
I just wish Kia did the red contrast lines on the ProCeed without buying the larger engine
Default/free colour, probably. It's the same here, you can often spot the model year by the colour
I guess? I'm more used to having a small selection of colours. Though I do think that the metallic was an extra 700€
I wonder if there's stats somewhere. If people tend to stretch their budget more for teslas and thus forgo such a simple thing
Black is usually the default,so some sick people explicitly ask for white

Only free colour here is white, currently
Default for M3 is grey, others default to white
I'm a green kind of guy, my two favourite colours ever are these
- Volvo pine gray
- Audi emerald green
Really, it usually is either silver or black here
Yeah, at one point that was the case too, hence why you can guess the model year from the colour
I ordered my Proceed in red. Since I only get the silver contrast lines 😦
Proceed to crash
use? wdym? Basic noise towards the internet?
I'll try not to
So we ping @clear ferry for sport?
Nein, we ping stuff and see who has best ping

I wonder how good the ping from my work machine is though o.0
Tell me what to ping
I assume you would't be able to reach it. And I'm too lazy to input my password 3 times just to ssh to it D:

what band is that?
Apparently I'm the first person to try to sign up for Comcast's 2Gb plan in my area.
They apparently don't have it ready to roll out yet already sold it to me. >.>
And are acting like I'm being unreasonable because I'm insisting they provide me what they already sold me.
The shipping delays are getting ridiculous, even for bits
They either need to refund me for the price difference or get me the service I paid for but they're being ridiculous on both fronts.
Apparently my old plan was a legacy plan that's not offered anymore.
I'm considering it. There's another company with 1Gb/1Gb fiber here but they have like a grand installation fee to get the fiber ran to my house.

Ugh! I'm trying to switch to firefox because of the adblocker thing... and it's sooooo slooooow!
It's fine, must be your system
Page loads and stuff is fine. But things like typing and switching channels in discord just... lags. A Lot!
I typed out all of that ☝️ and when I was done it was only showing up to "But".
I sometimes have that with discord on chromium
But what's worse is my custom new-tab page. In chrome it opens the page and lets me type anything in the navigation bar right away.
In ff it loads the page and puts the caret at the start of the navigation bar. So if I type githu and press enter I don't get to github.com but to githu<mystartpage>.com
Apparently that's for "security reasons"

You lot are slow
so a fun thing
the root domain has a broken AAAA record
dog education.gov.au A AAAA
A education.gov.au. 1m35s 165.12.220.124
AAAA education.gov.au. 1m35s 2406:4c00:0:220::124
The AAAA record goes to a server that refuses connections which means, that when accesessed from a network that uses NAT64/DNS64(A lot of large mobile providers) it will just time out
www.education.gov.au just has a A record so it works fine
huh? educatino.gov.au. shouldn't be in the root domain
education.gov.au. 1800 IN SOA ext-dns1.ssc.gov.au. dns-admin.employment.gov.au. 2010033223 10800 3600 2419200 1800
yea, not sure why that'd be an issue with the root zone
(im probably using the wrong term for the domain without subdomains)
that's just hostnames
I can access it on my mobile connection just fine. And that's definitely using IPv6 stuff.
Wouldn't be surprised if it was a out of country ban for it
i can check
the root is . which contains stuff like .com and .au
Australia does have empty root domains. .gov.au, .edu.au, etc. Since they're all used by state & territory stuff lol
Sounds about mostly right ones coming from education
.au?
that's a ccTLD
The DNS root zone is the top-level DNS zone in the hierarchical namespace of the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet.
Before October 1, 2016, the root zone had been overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which delegates the management to a subsidiary acting as the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IAN...
ah, i miss remembered the issue i came across with a site ages ago, its if the client lacks a CLAT
so sometimes linux and sometimes windows
you know, the root domain of DNS. It's a specific term for a specific thing
Yeah but what do you mean by a countries own root domain. Like what would a countries be for example
what's CLAT in that context?
CLient Address Translation
they don't? You were talking about empty root domains
Ah okay. Well given we still have ipv4 for all fixed line shouldn't be any issues then
naked domain is what a lot of hosting sites seem to call the concept
It's too early and I'm confused lol
almost midnight 😮
isn't it like 7am for you?
also, not sure what client address translation is supposed to be there o.0 I assume some subset of NAT? o.0
yeah, the cases where it can happen now are very niche
8:30 lol
Are there ISPs now that don't even provide CGNATed ipv4 outbound? o.0
Yes?
mobile mainly, kinda
I've only seen those with CGNAT enabled o.0
Most of our ipv4 personal connections at home in Aus are direct public IP
and some do the CG-Nat with ipv4 over ipv6
Most even semi-static too lol
An IPv6 transition mechanism is a technology that facilitates the transitioning of the Internet from the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) infrastructure in use since 1983 to the successor addressing and routing system of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6). As IPv4 and IPv6 networks are not directly interoperable, transition technologies are de...
Mobile is all CGNat because too many phones but no one's hosting stuff really off those
the whole combination of DNS64(optionally) NAT64 and the CLAT is called 464XLAT
I keep mine unless I actively force a new one
your result is clearly faster because you yelled at your router to be faster
I pay for static IP just because I want the guarantee of it never changing lol
Though I do have a large IPv6 space I gotta try using sometime
Fun fact, Norway was the first non-us node to connect to ARPANET
ok, so it's about v4 on 6 tunneling
my ISP offers both static v4 as standard and v6(which is static) on request(last i checked)
mine's super scuffed
i've been dual stack for a while now
they do v6 and GCNATed tunneled ipv4 by default
but because my cable modem is in bridge mode, now I only get v4. But it's a dedicated address
I've hosted stuff online since 1998, never had a static IP, been using dyndns since 1999 i think
2 years of constant dualstack, i intermittantly setup HE tunnels before that
Used to get 8 ips on docsis until 2005, now only get 6 on ftth
lots of people shit on comcast, but at least they have ipv6
So I get either a /48 or a /64 with IPv6. Just have no clue which one is mine 😂
Dont they do dynamic prefixes?
pretty sure you won't get a /48 unless you pay for something weird
Normally it's a /56
Im assuming the /48 is the prefix deligated to you to advertise on your networks, the /64 is for your router to get a address on the ISP's network
We’re providing a delegated IPv6 /48 prefix for use on the LAN interfaces of the residential router. This provides 65 536 /64 IPv6 subnets for use on individual LAN interfaces, such as multiple Wifi networks. This is a lot of /64s, however it is simpler and cheaper for us to give all customers a /48.
From the isp directly
Ive been using my 48 for vpns
😂 they are too lazy to configure different setups for business and non business customers
My prefix apparently stays the same as long as I stay within the same state too, that's convenient
but Ive found it useful for just randomly giving to things
I really should look into how to use it properly. Just lazy
I have been planning to do it properly, but some openwrt vlan bugs have stopped me
yea, ipv6 is pita
And i don't use it a lot
I just prefer ips I can remember
its kind of been set and forget for me
You don't have to with ipv6 @umbral cliff
Built in DNS
Sounds like mdns lol
its hex speak
just use multicast addresses for everything 😂
A N Y C A S T
anycast doesn't really change between v4 and v6 though
I use this https://github.com/AndreBL/ip6neigh to snoop the IPv6 addresses and match them to DHCP clients
that sounds like major pain o.0
i'm just waiting for ipv12: https://mobile.twitter.com/_pronto_/status/1202246891129524226
IPv12: addressing will be emojis

Yaas queen
you can kinda do that with v6. Just assume every block is a UCS-2 character
You are such a nerd @glacial knot
can't map every valid address, but probably enough to have some fun
I'm embarrassed
and you should be
huh, I had read it, but yeah, thread advertises the its on mesh prefix to the network
anyway, thats the VPN server self advertising its route again
Anyone got some good stuff to read about how to host something on IPv6 and have it publically accessible

Due to some debates about the longevity of "IOT Clouds" with my friends i've been searching far and wide for a blog that somebody used to maintain that had a big, updated list of now dead (but once living) "Smart Home Clouds" and other random "IOT Services" IE (Wink, Smartthings Iris, etc etc)
it depends on your router and the server your hosting
Hurricane electric have a cert(which is outdated) where you can get a t-shirt
Does anybody remember what i'm talking about? I can't find it anywhere.
internet of shit?
hmm maybe
Nah, that's close but not quite it. It was specifically a list of home automation services that have been shuttered.
I have seen the one you where thinking about, but i cant remember its name
reminds me of the killedbygoogle site
thats one feature of ipv6 i use, i have RADVD running on my VPN server advertising the prefix used on the VPN with SLAAC
so that devices communicating with a VPN client just directly send the packets to the server rather than via the router, skips the whole ICMP redirect dance
ipv6 is just too complex to remember and use the adresses
See that's where the money is though. If you can understand it then you're an expert and can charge for it
Lol
i only do that stuff at home, not at wörk
It has a broken ctrl+shift+tab if you didn't press ctrl+tab first too. So ctrl+shift+tab turns into ctrl+{tab, shift+tab, shift+tab}
There's a reason Firefox has ass market share. It's been the crappy alternative since like 2008.
Until recently Firefox didn't even support trackpad gestures on windows. (recently being last couple years)
Perhaps with more people using it, websites will opt to optimize their website not only for chromium users
never had any issues with that in the last 2 years
Firefox had a decent market share at one point. Mozilla has shown a striking lack of business sense.
Even if it was 2 years ago that it was introduced that's painfully late compared to chromium based browsers and safari
Firefox's UI has always been slower than alternatives.
If you are not satisfied with firefox, just stick with chrome until you see your first ad even with an adblocker
Even back on IE5/IE6, they couldn't do as much as FF but I recall them being faster.
A lot of people argue it's website support, but I would say Firefox's lack of marketshare is how usable it is. A lot of it's ways of doing things are painful from my perspective
Implying there won't be a thousand Chromium forks that don't disable manifest v2?
Too bad Firefox has also copied the same extension thing chromium is doing
wdym?
Which websites dont work well with firefox?
Firefox already announced they're not going to be adding the stricter/limited filtering that's in Manifest v3
Oh good. Thought that with them supporting v3 they would break it
Not that I'm too concerned with network level adblocker as well
I don't know. Just you said websites have to optimise for not chromium. And my point is it's not that as the big issue for Firefox adoption
But the rest of their stuff
Firefox shat the bed when they got rid of the old extension API.
I said it, because you said websites/discord run terrible on firefox.
I never said they run terrible? I say it's a thing people argue for why Firefox doesn't get used
¯_(ツ)_/¯
negative.
hey you guys know if there's any app to make a surround sound system out of phones? :)) like add multiple phones, each acting as a speaker
gross
ikr? would sound dreadful. but the concept is useful
just press play on all phones at once
or code a website that you open on each phone to play sound
no man, would need separate mix for each channel
hmm, if you plugged a rf transmitter on each of thee outs on a 7.1 soundcard, you could then receive each signal via a different phone
you'd need 4 different stereo rf transmitters and a radio app on the phone that allows to select either right or left channel only
correct
well I was thinking in terms of connectivity
cos perhaps in the future there would be a bluetooth dolby atmos app in which you could just add stuff
add speakers, woofers
modular like that
i highly doubt that dolby would do such terrible fuckery
but that won't happen cos atmos is proprietary. I heard google tryin to make an open standard for this though
why terrible?
it would be a standard, like all speakers you would buy from now on could be integrated
As you describe it, you would use speakers, plugged into a phone but just multiple of that.
Boy would it be a hassle to fix the various latencies of all devices to avoid not synchronous phase delays
thats cool
well the phase thing could possibly be calculated like avrs do via a mic
i.e. room correction
no
why not
i dont talk about speakers sitting at a different position
I talk about phones playing the sound at a slightly different time
And also equalize over the different speaker qualities and response functions over different frequencies
yes, they both come down to the same thing believe it or not: phase
but cant be fixed the same way
dolby would never do such fuckery to audio
but if you are willing to do it privately, then all power to you, do what makes you happy
Otherwise trebble and mids might have different speakers as their main speaker
In a not so nice way
thats what room correction does, it indtroduces a delay for each speaker according to its position (which the avr divines via an impulse response calculation)
Why not? You'd just have to add potentially quite high delay to the channels to account for processing delays on other channels
yes well pointed out. the delays in this case would be larger than the delays for the phase correction
It would still sound horrible unless every node is the same hardware
But if you go for phones as a speaker system already...
I only used phones as an example. could be anything with a speaker and app integration
i.e. those high end individual bluetooth speakers
exactly, highly delayed audio to make up for not synchronized audio all streamed over wifi
like make a 11.2.4 out of those, and woofers
why mess with such expensive fuckery, when you can just lay a few wires and have much better audio?
Delay barely matters for music or radio
I wouldn't pull any wires through this flat
the delay wouldn't matter that much once they are all in sync
again, all power to you if you want to do such a thing
but for the majority of usecases, its terrible for many reasons and expensive
I don't know how to code
start to learn it
no
ok
^^
holy shit youtubers get mad when you link to another video showing them their mistake
F* HP printers
It‘s the fifth time now I disable „Wifi Direct“ on that thing. Still keeps on spawning its own ssid every few weeks. Piece of shit
Try in the web portal for the printer. Might fix that
Mine has never done that, I've had it for 4 years
Putting it in a fariday cage might be slight overkill
where do you think I set this in the first place? ofc I am in the web portal
assuming he can't figure out how to open the door while sleep walking to turn wifi direct back on
there's a whole lotta threads about this issue with HP printers.
they just like to advertise themselves and their oh-so awesome "HP Direct" SSIDs
I'm not sleepwalking @forest edge
How do you know
The printer might be sleepwalking into things, turning wifi direct on
Bet you didn't think of that
F that
Gonna throw it away
Buy some new cartridges, get the printer for free with them
Short rant:
How the heck are you supposed to move windows in todays software?
the e-cig fires are kind of funny.
Lithium battery fires are becoming more common every day as more and more devices contain them. Here are some examples of fires which have occurred in a range of devices from mobile phones to electric vehicles.
Say I want to drag my browser window somewhere. I have to hit this area with my mouse
In vscode I found this part to work. And that's it
don't have that issue on win11
The parts of the Teams window that can be dragged can't even be discerned from the search bar unless you have a well calibrated screen
I hate wasting screen space as much as the next guy, but really?
i dunno what browser you are using but chrome when not full screen makes a bar above the tabs to move the window around
I don't use vscode or teams so can't speak on those
just realized i am using a theme, might be why mine dosen't look like a sliver you got
On the printer display is where I thought lok
*lol
I think there's a setting for chromium based browsers to change whether the title bar includes tabs, or separate
I don't know. Never move windows using the mouse anymore, just keyboard lol
you use the snap? gross lol
Full screen or side by side are useful. Don't need them to be floating
I love my triple 4k monitor real estate
Triple would be too much for me
Dual is good enough
Only have 1080p at work. Can't get any more so I'll just accept that
I couldn't do multiple monitors of the same size side by side or top/down
I've had quad or triple since 2000
Tried going back to dual
Couldn't do it
Think I started with dual in 1997
with crt? lulz
I've started using the mouse to move windows since discovering FancyZones.
Pull the window with left button, click right button to bring up the zones and then drop it where I want it to snap.
What is this magic
I would use those except not approved software lol
dosen't win11 already have something like that built in?
I thought i saw something with that with the whole snap crap they added
Imagine using windows 11 at work lol
Well do on my work laptop. Just not client device
Client is where I do most of my work anyway
It's like... I spend all the time in wsl
doesn't everyone work from home now tho?
Nope. Not if required by the client
Because it's Linux in windows it's shitty?
I only go onsite for military these days
Too many limitations, usb redirect etc etc, also it's hyperv based
Yuck
It works perfectly fine if you don't need a full Linux distro tbh
Especially since you can use vscode to integrate natively
Ahhh that piece of shit lol
Corporate image with limiting software, yuck
My manager just says bla bla bla really loud when I say I run Linux
Covers her ears too
the windows perception of linux is so true
Heck, can you install this 1yo program on an iPad, no sorry your os version was retired yesterday
ATX has admitted to wanting to use discord on command line
Except it's up to app developers to choose what version to target? Same with android
age brings everyone to gui's sooner or later
I literally ran the software on my iPad 1h before it refused to install, because I did a Factory reset of the ipad
Or size 55 font
Then I wasn't allowed to install it anymore
Whilst I installed Spotify on my iPhone 4 2 and a bit years ago with no problems. Just downloaded the older version
updating is important. just because one doesn't like forced updates on windows doesnt mean they also suck on ios. ios update adoption is amongst the highest there is, so people like and do updates... no idea who likes to run outdated ios versions 🤷♂️
Try installing GarageBand on any older apple product
People who run devices that are 5-6 years old and dont have support
Cant update when apple decides to not support products anymore, because
because they're old and people then complain about performance? thats a total valid reason for me tbh
they want you to buy a new computer every 2 years. just pick it up at the same time you pick up the new iphone
Ah yes like android manufacturers are any different
Apple gives like 5+ years. Most android does is hope for 3 lol
At least there usually is third party os
you get 5 years of updates on iphones. 5 years
how many do you want?
With devices being locked down I'm sure
Samsung locks the camera if you unlock the bootloader lmao
I get three android major os versions on OnePlus
shit i had my last computer trucking for over 10 years lol
11-12-13
So 3 years then
now wait
when it comes to android.. it's not android in charge of what and when gets updated
Actually, i got 4, the OnePlus 8 pro came with 10 afaik
unless it's a google phone
So 4 major versions
I think my pixel 3 has had 4ish major updates
and it will continue to get them as they come
so you can run a iOS version thats released 5 years after release... and then you complain about not getting updates, 5 years after you bought the phone? this is weird and unexpected coming from a android user
iOS didn't drop support for any devices from iOS 13 to 16. iPhone 6s lost support this year, released 2015 lol
That's a long support cycle
Which generation?
if it's not the one with the lidar 3d mapping ability it's trash anyways
Pretty sure it is first, need to check
those are actually kind of neat
So it got iOS 7 to iOS 12, with the latest version of iOS 12 released in august 2022 lol
5 years of full version, and nearly a decade of updates
Mine is stuck at 9 afaik
Then something is wrong. As the air supports 12
ios 12 lol
your not supposed to, and for servers your probably going to have a way shorter address 2a00:1450:4009:80a::2001
i did remember my ULA address once, but i mostly use hostnames on my local network so have forgotten
6 was really never meant for local anyways
and don't you question it!
ngl, i think something flew into his mouth
Test
What was the word he was trying to say?
Godlike
oh boy that guy talks so much bullshit
how you figure?
for example: "phones contain a small lithium battery, typically 60Wh or less"
find me any useable phone with a 60Wh battery
i had batteries reaching above 100°C with no explosions or fires, that one actually catches fire due to being left in the sun is a very very rare occurrence
- the majority of videos happend in china, where there are very relaxed rules on how safe your product must be
no one is gonna dispute that lol but the videos clearly show something blowing up lol
have you ever seen any lithium battery blow up in your life?
if so, which kind was it
are you saying lithium batteries catching fire is BS?
cough Samsung Galaxy cough
thats not what i'm saying, i'm saying that the times it happens and that there is supposedly no way to extinguish them is often very exaggerated
maybe but I'm pretty sure the clips in that video were real
and the majority of them from china with very relaxed rules on safety
shit happens and the more opportunities you give shit to happen, it's going to happen more often.
And Lithium battery chemistry is ... "interesting"
It's almost like we went out of our way to find a way of making something that if it goes wrong can go very badly wrong indeed
the typical nmc/lco ones, yes definitely
but there are also much safer chemistries available like LFP that costs the same per kWh or LTO which is nearly indestructible but is pretty expensive
And for phones, manufacturers will tend to make the more power in less space for less money tradeoff
(indeed, they'll do that pretty much anywhere that regulations don't force higher safety options)
Sounds like every other technological advancement we have made
Long shot, doesn't have to be home assistant friendly..
Well measurement tool, seen some sonic versions, anyone using one?
Water level measuring ?
measuring the expansion of the universe
that's why we need to measure
Yes, we have a shared well, maybe 6 meters deep. Would be nice to get an alarm when it goes low
any universe expansion has weirdly disproportionally targeted my midsection
Looks like a DIY version with an ESP and an ultrasonic sensor is the way to go
What would you do when the alarm goes off? Just try to use less water for a bit?
good old earth bus
Easiest is to just go to the pump house and turn off the outgoing water
Basically what has happened, we share a well, 3 households
Turns out no one has replaced the sand or cleaned out the well for over 10 years
And it was really low last night
No one has been checking it, myself included
It wouldn't be a bad idea if we can graph the level
As well as have notifications if there is a large amount being used, or if level gets low
But we are getting someone here on Thursday to look at cleaning it all out.
I have an iron filter after the well, so I don't notice any issues with colour etc, just when the pressure is low
just drill it 1 meter deeper after it has been cleaned
and where a lot of devices that contain them are made, so are in more of a state where they can break
also this happens with main brand stuff in the UK even
namely a e-cig
those disposables should be banned world wide
the proper e-cigs often cumbust because the owner neglects the care of the battery and uses them when he shouldn't
Should be designed so it won't combust even if the user fucks up
i agree with that one
Oh nice
apparently I have 12500 USD in stocks
that are gonna pay out this year
Payout 12th of december, damnit have to wait for them
do i hear more smart home appliances?
Truth
https://youtu.be/FwwGv9hijUQ I have seen someone do something very similar to this and it is fairly accurate. You could use a wireless pressure gauge to pipe the well changes into HA or something for an alert and chart out over time changes in the well.
That one of the e-bike in the elevator is terrifying. You're not getting out of that elevator alive.
Legit I think they cut it off early because you're literally seeing someone's last moments
It occurs to me... We surround ourselves with volatile chemistry batteries of ever increasing sizes without batting an eye, but are fucking terrified of nuclear fission. I guess it's a "devil you know" thing. Unquenchable fire and toxic smoke? Relatable. Not scary. Radiation? Alien. Super scary.
One you can take viral YouTube videos of and maybe toss into an open space to let it burn itself out. The other can contaminate vast regions for many, many years
it's the scale of the worst case scenario and who it would affect
if the batteries in my tv remote could do this I would be afraid of it as well lol https://media.tenor.com/WJZhnnnFKCUAAAAC/explosion-boom.gif
It's more like we don't care about the radiation from coal burning, but we do care about nuclear plants running with 0 radioactive output
I'd say that has more to do with the size of the implementation than anything... I imagine a lithium chemistry battery big enough to sustain a city for even a few days could do a lot more damage than even Chernobyl ever did. Winds would carry that smoke very very far...
That said, the size of implementation in practice is the size of practical implementation, so you do have a point
A AA battery sized reactor probably wouldn't have enough fissile material to explode at all... Which kinda comes back to the "devil you know" thing. When something is counterintuitive or difficult to explain it's prone to propagation of misinformation.
"This fire/smoke is extra dangerous and much harder to deal with" is easy to convey
pretty sure fission is cheaper than batteries too over the long run
and how long do we have the materials for fission? heard something along only for 100-200 years if we'd switch the entire grid to it
You don't need nuclear materials to be in critical quantities for them to be extremely dangerous. Dirty bombs made by just putting radioactive material near a conventional explosion would be quite effective. You'd also have to deal with other issues like fires and improper disposal. I seriously doubt we'll see any radioactive power sources for general consumer sale ever.
idk about you but I don't want it to be feasible for somebody to make a city uninhabitable by buying a bag of fertilizer and enough AA's.
I make that bag of fertilizer myself 🌬️
|| Fertilizer? I HARDLY KNOW 'ER! ||

WHY ARE YOU ALL AWAKE
