Is that why the consumption is so high?

#

You have 3 heat pumps

#

Is that unusual for Norwegians?

umbral cliff
#

I just want an easy ability to monitor my usage per circuit. Probably going to have to sort something out with where the fuse board is and stick something in the wall

clear ferry
#

living room one is on all year, bedroom one is only on in summer, attic one is only on in very cold months

#

most norwegian homes have 1-2 heat pumps in my experience

#

I got the third one because the bedroom is unlivable in summer

#

paid 1000 for the pump, 3000 for installation

The issue with nuclear is the sheer incompetence and corruptness of our government and of the citizens in germany.

Just look at major building projects like the "Berliner Flughafen" https://www.flughafen-berlin-kosten.de/
Planned 2006 to cost 2.000.000.000€ and to be finished by 2011. Now it has cost already 3 times that amount and still isn't open 11 years later.

We also have plenty of absolute retarded people, especially Bavarians, who complain about Windmills and HV Power Lines making them sick but also complain about the highest electricity prices in the country.
Now just imagine how apeshit people would go, if just a single new nuclear power plant would be planned years after we wanted to fully drop out of it and how much money would be wasted on it, just so it looks cool instead of being functional.

#

Small and "decentralized" windmills are much easier to get planned & approved by all useless paper work stations.

Finding a replacement is pretty easy and ridiculously cheap. Don't just google a replacement for your UPS model number, pull the battery, peel off any top brand labels on the battery to find what it truly is and look up a replacement for that on amazon. Most manufactures use an existing battery made by and for something else, and then slap their own branding label literally on top of it's original manufactured printing.

I quit using Amazon after realizing they'd screwed up 10% of my orders so far this year and every time I had to call in and argue with their customer service people for an hour to get it resolved.

umbral cliff
#

What did they do

prisma briar
#

They just suck at actually getting packages to my door.

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

Mostly it was packages delivered to other houses in my neighborhood or packages getting lost then I'd have to do the wait X days to request a refund BS.

#

I didn't even really mind that packages were getting screwed up, but I did mind that Amazon makes it such a pain in the ass and take forever to get things sorted when they do.

#

I ordered that e-ink screen for the remote I'm building from Amazon, they lost it on delivery twice before I gave up and ordered it off of eBay. Then they tried denying me the refund because they never received the item back.

#

I ended up just filing a chargeback on that one. They kept telling me they'd file a ticket for the appropriate team to look into it, after two weeks of no change I went through my bank instead.

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

They didn't, but I wouldn't really care if they did.

#

They sent me a nastygram saying the chargeback was just but asking me to continue filing pointless tickets in the future instead of actually getting my money back.

#

"We received your email about order XXX. We have researched this matter and confirmed that the dispute in question has been resolved between Amazon.com and your card issuer, in your favor.

Please contact your card issuer for more information about reimbursement for this purchase. In the future, file an A-to-z Guarantee claim to resolve any issues related to Amazon Marketplace purchases before contacting your card issuer."

Polestar-2 was also a letdown tbh

#

The original was fine

#

Even if the ID3 looks cheap it actually feels more premium

#

But it is way overpriced

rapid plinth
#

Or Tesla, which, well, it's Tesla

#

There's some really wild trucks like the Hummer and the R1T, but then at the same time there's the much more conservative F150 Lightning and Silverado EV (and frankly, the R1T isn't that weird)

clear ferry
#

The annoying thing about Tesla is that all the cars really look the same, until you see them from an angle

#

Most radical EV design I've seen is probably the Honda e

#

Which is just ridiculous

#

Another infuriating thing is that the EV makers are doing features as a service, like a $100k etron charging you $2 a month for adaptive matrix lights

rapid plinth
#

That's definitely not an EV specific thing, BMW has been doing similar bullshit on gas and diesel cars for some time

#

But it comes from EVs

#

rapid plinth
#

Oh, I forgot about the "we took the remote start button off your fob... Because you can do it in the app... Which you have to pay a subscription for" which Ford and GM have been doing on literally everything they make

#

Btw "active matrix headlights" are illegal in the US so if you want to break it up by market, well.

clear ferry
#

Volvo does it better, as long as your car has a valid warranty (7 years) or has been to service after year 7 the app is active

clear ferry
rapid plinth
#

Yeah. NHTSA has really stupid rules about what headlights can and can't do

clear ferry
#

Last i checked the etron did micro transactions on headlights, engine heater, map packs, and heated windscreen

#

I think it was

#

Need to verify

rapid plinth
#

Remote start aside, I've heard of literally only three companies doing it, and all three have a reputation for anticonsumer bullshit 🤷

clear ferry
#

Mercedes were losing large sales here since they didn't jump the EV bandwagon

#

Had to lay off a lot of people

#

Last number I saw was 6.5/10 cars sold are now ev, and 8.5/10 are EV or hybrid

#

Guessing it will be 9/10 by 2025

rapid plinth
#

New, maybe. The gas powered trade-ins most certainly aren't leaving the road.

clear ferry
#

Not yet no, Norway has a tendency to keep cars for 15+ years

#

But the EV trade in has been so fast the average car age has dropped tremendously

rapid plinth
#

In the US average car age is only going up

clear ferry
#

Average age is now 10.8 years it seems

#

In 2020

rapid plinth
#

Probably closer to 15-20 here

clear ferry
#

Google says 13.1

#

For the US

rapid plinth
clear ferry
#

I love the automatic Matrix lights on the Volvo, great in winter

rapid plinth
#

And I think that trend will only accelerate. Fast charging infrastructure is just not gonna develop fast enough, so people are gonna be willing to do more and more expensive repairs on ICE cars that can no longer be replaced

clear ferry
#

We have enough fast chargers, and home chargers are inexpensive, but we have been building them with national funds for 10+ years

#

The biggest issue is usually the introduction of new standards constantly

rapid plinth
#

You also have a tiny fraction the geography to cover

clear ferry
#

Just scale it

rapid plinth
#

Population density is an issue too

clear ferry
#

It's very simple, nothing is tied to the entire vastness of the country

rapid plinth
#

You can drive a hundred miles along some major roads and not see more than two houses within eyeshot of each other

clear ferry
#

5% of the population lives in northern parts with 7 months winters and they have no issues with charging infrastructure either being sparsely populated

rapid plinth
#

What is that in persons per square mi/km?

clear ferry
#

3 per square kilometer

#

The red area here

#

Comparatively the capital has 3857 per square kilometer

rapid plinth
#

Hmm, that's similar to most of upper Michigan

#

I'm trying to work out a comparison

#

What is the fast charging availability like in that area?

clear ferry
#

Should be updated with latest

#

And everyone that buys an EV has a charging port at home too

#

Modern houses are 3ph 400v distribution, so can get decent chargers

rapid plinth
#

Well yeah for around town you just charge at home. I'm looking at traveling, for vacation or business

#

Even in the US, every house has a 240v split phase service, 7kW is completely doable

#

The issue in the US is, if you need to go more than 200mi and it's not between major cities, you'll likely have to check into a hotel just to charge

clear ferry
#

Yeah, 200miles is peanuts with modern EVs and charging

#

Even my low end leaf does 400km, and it takes 40 minutes to top it up at a charge point

#

The Mercedes EQS was rated for 700 now I think

#

It's just gonna go up

#

Even a huge car like the Hongqi does 500+ without issues

rapid plinth
#

No, you need to drive there 200mi and there's level 2 at best when you get there, and now you have to get back.

#

And you can forget about bringing your boat.

static schooner
#

I suspect that an EV is quite manageable if you prepare and aren't caught offguard, but I sometimes find myself late to something, realize that I'm nearly out of gas, and am at most 5-10mins away from a full tank

clear ferry
#

Yes, if you need to drive 200mi (350km) and you have a car with 500km range, you just need to charge either with a type 2 and it will be full when you leave or charge with a regular wall transformer for the duration of your stay and you probably have enough power to get back

#

Even the model 3 is 600+ these days

#

Same is the BMW ix which is a huge car

rapid plinth
#

Does type 2 mean something different there? Because you're not getting a full charge in under 8 hours on level 2

clear ferry
#

We do up to 11kw on type 2

#

So roughly 2h to charge 20kwh according to the sheet, and 10h if you think about a 80kwh battery

#

We even do 22kw it seems with three phase charger box and type 2

#

So half that time on the fastest ones

#

But depending on car model, chademo might be a better option for the nissan owners

rapid plinth
#

Okay, 240V 50A is 12kw, and that's about the limit for the US. J1772 doesn't have provisions for three phase. So I think there's a piece of the picture missing here

clear ferry
#

Yeah, we do 400v and three phase

rapid plinth
#

480V three phase grid is a thing in industrial and commercial areas in the US, I think that's typically the service to the equipment at fast charging locations

clear ferry
#

Yes, it is both in homes and charge stations here

#

We swapped to 400v default in the 90s

rapid plinth
static schooner
#

yes, that's the change in mindset

clear ferry

I charge the Volvo every night, and the nissan once or twice a month, very manageable, and a lot cheaper than gas

rapid plinth

#

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

ashen parrot
#

hmm, if you plugged a rf transmitter on each of thee outs on a 7.1 soundcard, you could then receive each signal via a different phone

finite atlas
#

you'd need 4 different stereo rf transmitters and a radio app on the phone that allows to select either right or left channel only

ashen parrot
#

correct

finite atlas
#

but why not just get speakers instead?

#

used ones are dirt cheap

ashen parrot

well I was thinking in terms of connectivity

cos perhaps in the future there would be a bluetooth dolby atmos app in which you could just add stuff

add speakers, woofers

modular like that

finite atlas
#

i highly doubt that dolby would do such terrible fuckery

ashen parrot

but that won't happen cos atmos is proprietary. I heard google tryin to make an open standard for this though

#

why terrible?

#

it would be a standard, like all speakers you would buy from now on could be integrated

finite atlas

As you describe it, you would use speakers, plugged into a phone but just multiple of that.

why not

finite atlas
#

i dont talk about speakers sitting at a different position
I talk about phones playing the sound at a slightly different time

glacial knot
ashen parrot
#

yes, they both come down to the same thing believe it or not: phase

finite atlas
#

but cant be fixed the same way

#

dolby would never do such fuckery to audio
but if you are willing to do it privately, then all power to you, do what makes you happy

glacial knot
#

Otherwise trebble and mids might have different speakers as their main speaker
In a not so nice way

ashen parrot
#

thats what room correction does, it indtroduces a delay for each speaker according to its position (which the avr divines via an impulse response calculation)

glacial knot
ashen parrot
#

yes well pointed out. the delays in this case would be larger than the delays for the phase correction

glacial knot
#

It would still sound horrible unless every node is the same hardware
But if you go for phones as a speaker system already...

ashen parrot
#

I only used phones as an example. could be anything with a speaker and app integration

#

i.e. those high end individual bluetooth speakers

finite atlas
ashen parrot
#

like make a 11.2.4 out of those, and woofers

finite atlas
#

why mess with such expensive fuckery, when you can just lay a few wires and have much better audio?

glacial knot
#

I wouldn't pull any wires through this flat

ashen parrot
finite atlas
#

again, all power to you if you want to do such a thing

#

but for the majority of usecases, its terrible for many reasons and expensive

ashen parrot
#

I don't know how to code

finite atlas
#

start to learn it

ashen parrot
#

Short rant:
How the heck are you supposed to move windows in todays software?

forest edge
#

the e-cig fires are kind of funny.

low harness
#

Say I want to drag my browser window somewhere. I have to hit this area with my mouse

#

In vscode I found this part to work. And that's it

forest edge
low harness
#

The parts of the Teams window that can be dragged can't even be discerned from the search bar unless you have a well calibrated screen

#

I hate wasting screen space as much as the next guy, but really?

forest edge
#

i dunno what browser you are using but chrome when not full screen makes a bar above the tabs to move the window around

I don't use vscode or teams so can't speak on those

they want you to buy a new computer every 2 years. just pick it up at the same time you pick up the new iphone

Apple gives like 5+ years. Most android does is hope for 3 lol

forest edge

now wait

when it comes to android.. it's not android in charge of what and when gets updated

clear ferry
#

Actually, i got 4, the OnePlus 8 pro came with 10 afaik

forest edge

unless it's a google phone

clear ferry
#

So 4 major versions

forest edge
#

I think my pixel 3 has had 4ish major updates

#

and it will continue to get them as they come

dusky plank
#

so you can run a iOS version thats released 5 years after release... and then you complain about not getting updates, 5 years after you bought the phone? this is weird and unexpected coming from a android user

umbral cliff

iOS didn't drop support for any devices from iOS 13 to 16. iPhone 6s lost support this year, released 2015 lol

forest edge
finite atlas
forest edge
finite atlas
#

for example: "phones contain a small lithium battery, typically 60Wh or less"

#

find me any useable phone with a 60Wh battery

#

i had batteries reaching above 100°C with no explosions or fires, that one actually catches fire due to being left in the sun is a very very rare occurrence

#
  • the majority of videos happend in china, where there are very relaxed rules on how safe your product must be
forest edge
finite atlas
#

have you ever seen any lithium battery blow up in your life?
if so, which kind was it

forest edge
#

are you saying lithium batteries catching fire is BS?

keen bridge
#

cough Samsung Galaxy cough

finite atlas
#

thats not what i'm saying, i'm saying that the times it happens and that there is supposedly no way to extinguish them is often very exaggerated

forest edge
#

maybe but I'm pretty sure the clips in that video were real

finite atlas
#

and the majority of them from china with very relaxed rules on safety

forest edge
#

shit happens and the more opportunities you give shit to happen, it's going to happen more often.

clever mortar
#

And Lithium battery chemistry is ... "interesting"

#

It's almost like we went out of our way to find a way of making something that if it goes wrong can go very badly wrong indeed

finite atlas
#

the typical nmc/lco ones, yes definitely
but there are also much safer chemistries available like LFP that costs the same per kWh or LTO which is nearly indestructible but is pretty expensive

clever mortar
#

And for phones, manufacturers will tend to make the more power in less space for less money tradeoff

#

(indeed, they'll do that pretty much anywhere that regulations don't force higher safety options)

Basically what has happened, we share a well, 3 households

#

Turns out no one has replaced the sand or cleaned out the well for over 10 years

#

And it was really low last night

#

No one has been checking it, myself included

#

It wouldn't be a bad idea if we can graph the level

#

As well as have notifications if there is a large amount being used, or if level gets low

#

But we are getting someone here on Thursday to look at cleaning it all out.

I have an iron filter after the well, so I don't notice any issues with colour etc, just when the pressure is low

finite atlas
#

just drill it 1 meter deeper after it has been cleaned

pure vine
#

also this happens with main brand stuff in the UK even

namely a e-cig

finite atlas

those disposables should be banned world wide
the proper e-cigs often cumbust because the owner neglects the care of the battery and uses them when he shouldn't

pretty sure fission is cheaper than batteries too over the long run

finite atlas

and how long do we have the materials for fission? heard something along only for 100-200 years if we'd switch the entire grid to it

prisma briar
#

You don't need nuclear materials to be in critical quantities for them to be extremely dangerous. Dirty bombs made by just putting radioactive material near a conventional explosion would be quite effective. You'd also have to deal with other issues like fires and improper disposal. I seriously doubt we'll see any radioactive power sources for general consumer sale ever.
