glacial knot
#

synthetic fuels will have some use cases. but both total efficiency and cost will make them rather niche

rapid plinth
#

yeah that's the rub. They'll never get the efficiency up enough to offset the added weight of just lugging batteries around. Except for in aircraft where weight matters a hell of a lot more and engine designs that are impractical on the ground (see: turbofans) are the gold standard

#

You can feed a turbofan basically any combustible gas and get decent efficiency, so the only real challenge is storage (which is a Big Problem for hydrogen), and making the fuel in the first place (which is still not a rosy picture for... anything else, really)

my pfsense router lan is plugged in with a new managed switch. my pc is plugged into the switch. i cant find my managed switch ip at all in pfsenses dhcp leases assigned, but using netgears utility tool, i see that my managed switch did indeed get an ip assigned, but on a diff subnet. my pc and router are on the same subnet though. i see that my switch has dhcp mode enabled, but i assume that my pfsense router should only be doing that.

#

should i be turning dhcp mode off on switch and assigning new ip/subnet mask? i am unable to configure it bc it is on a diff subnet than the pfsense router

finite atlas
#

Perhaps its going to be sails or something like it again

#

but we certainly cant continue for much longer, to burn fossil fuels at the amount we currently do

glacial knot
#

oh, ships burn the leftovers we can't use on land

finite atlas
#

i know

#

just burn it, where no one really cares

rapid plinth
#

yeah, the reactor itself is heavy, but the system as a whole is insanely light and compact because you don't need batteries or fuel storage at all. And every cubic foot of space is at a premium on cargo ships

#

smaller ships will be diverse, I think. Sails, solar, craploads of batteries, just depends on what works best for the application

finite atlas
#

but nuclear fission has its own troubles aswell, the biggest one is the radioactive waste, followed by radioactive disasters

glacial knot
#

do they not need huge amounts of fresh water? If they just use salt water they'll probably have short maintenance cycles

finite atlas
#

they dont, no
they just need cooling of which there is plenty

rapid plinth
#

cooling on a boat is basically free. Water's SHC is insane, you can dump heat into your hull all day.

finite atlas
#

but heating up the ocean isn't really a great idea aswell

#

especially at canals or where ships get loaded/unloaded

#

or perhaps, continue to expand the railroad network
its far more energy efficient & cost effective at transporting goods

#

and you could make use of all sorts of energies to power it at once, wind, water, solar, nuclear, even coal
no need for big batteries aswell

rapid plinth
finite atlas
#

i know that water can take a lot of heat, but it also needs to be get rid of somewhere

rapid plinth
finite atlas

rapid plinth
#

I don't feel like doing math right now...

finite atlas
#

dont worry, you dont need to
france did a real world experiment already with their nuclear reactors this summer

#

guess what happend

rapid plinth
#

on the topic of radioactive waste, the only real hurdle is nimbyism. It's a solved problem.

#

The stronger the radiation, the shorter the half-life. After a matter of months you can dilute the stuff in concrete and it'll be totally harmless. Burying it is "just in case". And that's leaving out the whole recycling thing.... what you can't recycle is dramatically less radioactive.

rapid plinth
finite atlas
#

now france is facing a rather cold winter, with many of their power plants not being able to operate fully

rapid plinth
#

I think you flipped the causality here

finite atlas
#

feel free to correct me

rapid plinth
#

climate change led to the plants' bodies of water reaching levels too low for the reactors to function properly. There's no evidence that heat produced by the reactors was a contributing factor to this phenomenon.

#

and of course keep in mind these are grid scale reactors designed to continuously produce megawatts of power by intentionally producing steam to feed turbines

#

a ship's reactor would be a much smaller scale and a wildly different design

#

it occurs to me, diesel freighters are already sinking engine heat into the water, I wonder how it compares

finite atlas
#

Nuclear Reactors are roughly 30-45% efficient, roughly the same as diesel engines

rapid plinth
#

so.... assuming neither technology sees improvements in that department there'd be negligible difference between diesel and nuclear on the effect the ship has on the temperature of the water?

finite atlas
#

perhaps, yes

rapid plinth
#

On the topic of disasters... there's been no less than nine sinkings of nuclear-powered submarines. I'm gonna do some reading

finite atlas
#

look at how many container ships are sinking each year

#

wouldn't be very nice at all if they'd have a nuclear reactor inside

rapid plinth

The wreckage of the ship remains in the North Atlantic Ocean with all its armaments and nuclear engine.
Oh boy

USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Skipjack-class nuclear-powered submarine that served in the United States Navy, and the sixth vessel, and second submarine, of the U.S. Navy to carry that name.
Scorpion was lost with all hands on 22 May 1968. She is one of two nuclear submarines the U.S. Navy has lost, the other being USS Thresher. She was one of th...

finite atlas
#

the thing with nuclear fission is, if its done well, its a great thing imo
but time has shown, that its not being done well

rapid plinth
#

The general vibe I'm getting is, if a nuclear craft sinks, it eventually becomes a problem but you have a LONG time to do something about it

#

just ban freighters from the area above the Mariana and we'll be fine 🙏

glacial knot
rapid plinth
#

oh yeah, forgot about that... diesel exhaust doesn't really just stay in the air, it contaminates the area. You have to weigh risk vs. guaranteed impact

#

(quick aside: coal power exhausts harmful radioactive products into the air. It's actually directly comparable, apples to apples, to nuclear disasters, and the comparison is NOT flattering for coal.)

finite atlas
#

as a german, i know how bad coal is

#

thanks for reminding us

glacial knot
#

just be happy you aren't in NRW or the new states D:

finite atlas
#

i'm very happy that i dont live in the west or south of germany

rapid plinth
#

So the wreck of the Komsomolets is confirmed to be leaking radiation into the water... though it's muddied a bit by the fact the sub was carrying two nuclear torpedoes when it sank

finite atlas
#

there is also a sunken nuclear vessel somewhere a bit northern of russia

#

which leaks radioactivity

rapid plinth
#

I want to say "leave it to the Soviets to cut corners" but for-profits in international waters are probably worse

finite atlas
#

oh yeah, its the Komsomolez you mentioned

#

its leaking radioation to the norwegian bear island, but you arent allowed to set foot on the island

rapid plinth
#

I've got a meeting to go to, I can dig more later. But apparently because it's so deep the radiation isn't gonna have any real environmental impact

#

one last thought: a sunk diesel freighter dumps how much fuel into the ocean?

finite atlas
#

just 50L obviously

#

i'm not saying diesel is much better in all regards and that nuclear fission should be forgotten
just that we should really start to taking the matter of handling it properly more serious and take precautions

finite atlas

i really like the colours, too bad it takes half a minute to update :/

prisma briar
#

I updated it earlier to make it run actions in their own threads so you can continue to use it while the screen is updating. You have to know where what you want to click on is but it's better than just having to wait.

glacial knot
#

are you running an RTOS?

prisma briar
#

Yea

#

This esp32 has two 240MHz cores, kinda a waste to not have threading. The arduino framework for it is built on top of the ESP-IDF framework which is built on top of FreeRTOS.

#

Nothing like 2x240MHz cores with 512KB of RAM.

glacial knot
#

ohhh, you are running it on overkill hardware 😂

#

yea, esp32 is quite cool and capable

prisma briar
#

idk what else I'd use to get wifi with it. The esp8266 doesn't have enough RAM for a framebuffer and the RPi Pico looks even more overkill.

#

I guess I could have combined an 8266 with some other mcu but that would be expensive, tedious, bigger, annoying, etc... compared to just using an esp32.

glacial knot
#

do you have to run it as entire framebuffer? The LCD I got here I can feed in rectangles I pick
I guess this doesn't? You mentioned that it sucks wrt. partial updates

prisma briar
#

It doesn't have partial updates

#

It wants a full screen every draw

glacial knot
#

you could probably still optimize in some way taht only needs a line of icons in memory at a time or something
But it's really not worth it unless you mass produce a couple hundred thousand devices^^

prisma briar
#

Hmm, it looks like I can specify the memory address to write to on the screen

#

I might be able to clear it then compose an image in the screen's memory directly from the esp's flash

#

I'd have to write the logic to convert a row, column to a memory address and make my setpixel draw to that instead. That wouldn't be the hardest to do.

#

It'd be slow though since I'd have to be constantly spamming address updates in addition to the actual data.

#

The annoying thing about the esp32's ram is it's in 4 non-contiguous banks so I had to break my screen buffer up into three different blocks.

finite atlas
#

Have you looked at the STM32 ?

prisma briar
#

I have a few stm32f401's here

#

I use them when I need something with usb host

#

I've never used an stm with wifi though

#

I wasn't fond of their 'We took Eclipse and made it slower' IDE.

#

I used a couple stm32f401's with nrf24l01 RF transcievers to convert a USB keyboard into a wireless one

#

But I couldn't reasonably make it sleep and the USB host took too much power to be battery powered.

#

The nrf24l01's also had shit range.

#

I just got a nRF52840 zigbee dev board in too.

#

I was originally going to use it to send the commands from my touchscreen remote to HA but the esp32 connecting to wifi ended up being a couple hundred ms instead of the couple seconds I was expecting so I didn't use the zigbee board.

#

nordic RF really sucks at documentation. The nRF52840's setup guide might as well not exist, it's absurdly wrong on basically every point.

clear ferry

You need to program it to actually support it it seems

#

from the link I provided

#

Ensure you have a sub-directory within your sketch directory named 'data',
Place the files you wish to upload into the 'data' directory,
From 'Tools' menu, select the correct ESP8266 device and choose the 'Flash Size' with the SPIFFS you require ie. '1M (256K SPIFFS)'. See pics 1 and 2 above,
Ensure the serial monitor dialogue box is closed,

I thought that was programming the firmware to support it?

forest edge

while I have no doubt that there is probably a 40K/year kindergarten for the 1% which probably takes place in Disneyland the rest of the country doesn't pay that much, infact most are free and those that aren't are probably only about a grand a year if that

clear ferry
#

Apparently your kindergarten starts at 5 though 🤔

#

we start at 1

forest edge
#

now daycare on the other hand

#

is a diffrent ball game

#

cause that shit can range all over the place

So it would probably be your daycare then

#

I pay $300 a month for 5 days, 8 hours, 3 meals + snacks

forest edge

I hear people bitch about the cost of daycare around here all the time and it's more than that

but again, it all depends on the place

you could have two next door and both be outragiously priced diffrently

clear ferry

Same price for all here

#

I have 6 within 10 minutes drive

forest edge

daycare isn't the same as schools as kindergarten is classified as

We call it all "kindergarten" from 1-6

clear ferry

I'm only out of motion ones

I should try the aqara there. But I prefer the look of the Hues

I've got a number of the Hue outdoor motion sensors, they work well.

#

Haven't had any long enough for the battery to die yet though.

#

They all still report 100% battery after ~5 months

glacial knot
#

don' trust that battery % reporting

prisma briar
#

Yea, I'm guessing it's just measuring voltage

#

Which isn't the best way to determine a battery's charge by itself

glacial knot
#

my aqara sensors still report 99 or 98% when they stop working

prisma briar
#

Still though, I think the Hue motion sensors are about the only device type I have that I haven't had to re-pair at least one or two of since I got them.

#

They've been solid sensors.

clear ferry
#

Never repaired any of my Sensors

#

Or bulbs

prisma briar
#

Re-paired as in reconnected them to Zigbee.

#

My door sensors give me the most issues, there's a couple I have to reconnect every 6-8 weeks.

#

My esphome sensors were all giving me issues with going offline at the same time once a month or so but then they all just sorta stopped doing that.

I just ordered a IDE cable, hello 1998

last cedar
#

What do you need it for?

brazen fable
#

@clear ferry try controlling more than 10 hue color bulbs simultaneously and you'll notice lag when issuing multiple commands per second

dusky plank
brazen fable
#

What are you using an OG Xbox for

glacial knot
#

I have a PATA cable somewhere. Could throw it towards the Austrian border

dusky plank
#

It has lots of games on it and emulators, I change the very old hdd for a sata one and replace the cable when on it

glacial knot

why do you issue multiple commands per second to the bulbs? o.0

@dusky plank that counts as one device

Where I'm finding the hue Bridge suffers is more than 4-5 devices simultaneously

dusky plank

#

Yeah 4 or less devices it's not an issue

dusky plank

not a thing I would like to have happen on my regular mesh though

dusky plank

Guess I might read up on that perhaps

Wish hue would just put out a new advanced bridge though

the original v1 is exactly a decade old now

@dusky plank do you automate your garage at all

prisma briar

Do you have any automations for your garage door

prisma briar

40-wire ones aren't stable with drives much faster than what the OG xbox came with.

I created one to open the door when I or the lady get home but I don't really trust it lol

But it does work.

dusky plank

What's interesting is since I have hue bulbs outside I took a hue remote and turned it into a garage door opener with home assistant. Damn thing has 10x the range of my regular garage door opener
