Hey, I have two kids, full time job and too many hobbies, there is always time to tinker

I haven't had issues with my Hue bulbs. I had a WiZ bulb that the red channel keeps flaking out on but it started doing that right after I got it so I was able to exchange it.

#

I have a Hue bridge I rooted so I could poke around on it, but I don't use it anymore.

#

It uses mqtt on the hue bridge for ipc, but doesn't actually expose it outside the device at all.

clear ferry
#

Yeah, i retired all my bridges and been running zigbee2mqtt for three years

prisma briar

I went ZHA because my thermostat was incompatible with zigbee2mqtt

I preferred Z2M's interface for managing things over ZHA's tedious way of doing things.

Why Google TV no come with ethernet

umbral cliff
#

Wifi works fine for majority of users

yuck google tv

prisma briar
#

I like my Google TV Chromecasts

#

Infinitely better than the smart shit that Samsung puts in Tizen.

hushed basalt
#

It's just a bit mental to pay $30 the cost of a device to add ethernet in which used to be supplied

#

I can assure you a lottttt of people have problems with wifi, plus we should save the spectrum for things that need it like mobile devices not 75" TVs

clear ferry
#

Utter garbage

hushed basalt
#

My LG os is good

clear ferry
#

My 2016 LG was good for 6 months, then i replaced it with a roku, and then with an apple tv

hushed basalt
#

I don't use anything except the LG apps on the main TV

prisma briar
#

You can just plug in a generic rndis usb ethernet dongle into an LG TV too

hushed basalt
#

I have an Apple TV 4K not plugged in

#

My LG has an ethernet port

#

Do you mean Google TV?

prisma briar
#

Nah, I meant LG ones. The built-in ethernet adapter on my LG C1 is 100Mbps, a USB one can get ~300Mbps over USB 2.

hushed basalt
#

Hmm I've never checked the speed on mine

prisma briar
#

I was trying to play some dolby vision sample files and I was hitting the bandwidth limit.

hushed basalt
#

100Mbits is heaps for content distribution though

prisma briar
#

Yea, I've never come close to hitting it under what I'd consider normal use.

#

A chromecast or similar device is basically a requirement for Samsung TVs.

#

My friend's cheapass $200 TCL TV with Roku built-in has a way better OS experience than any Samsung TV I've ever used.

hushed basalt
#

The only thing I'm missing on LG is google casting

#

But I've had no complaints with the Plex, Netflix, Prime, Disney UX

prisma briar
#

I have a PC on my TV, I use that for almost all of my playback.

hushed basalt
#

Chromecasts shit me off though. No power saving is ridiculous

#

One of the largest tech companies in the world with billions of devices doesn't take responsibility for their TV devices to to save energy

dusky plank
#

how much power do they draw?

clear ferry
#

1.2w too much!

dusky plank
#

damn

prisma briar
#

Like 1w at idle

dusky plank
#

I don't see the problem then

prisma briar
#

They max at like 3w during operation

glacial knot
#

that's 10 times .1W

prisma briar
#

It's also 1/10th of 10w

dusky plank
#

must be a luxury item

prisma briar
#

A chromecast at idle would cost me like $0.06/mo

dusky plank
#

my LG's ethernet port is solely saturated by streaming the image to hyperion

hushed basalt
#

Every other device I've used complies with Energy Star and doesn't remain on indefinitely on idle

#

They'll either shut themselves off or disable the video signal and then the TV will turn itself off

#

Lets say 100M chromecasts, leave a 100w TV running 2 hours a day longer than a compliant device would

#

That's 20GWh a day

dusky plank
#

oh so you mean the screen off time

#

but who tf has 100M chromecasts

north lark
#

Just a shower thought: With all the different tools around (home assistant, node red, openhab, just to mention a few) and even more devices/systems for which plugins are needed for the respective tool, have there ever been thoughts around standardizing those plugins? Today, we're duplicating that work across all the tools and in the end it seems there's always something that works here but not here or just the quality sucks or whatever. If we'd just have a little microservice with a standardized REST API for each device/system (hue, knx, etc) with a standardized, I'd imagine everybody to benefit from that.

clear ferry
#

Well, HA is the standardization

#

It controls and interacts with anything

north lark
#

But it's a "standardization" that is very tightly bound to HA as a software, hence the problems I described above. It would be nice to use standards when standardizing something 😄

#

And it would also make contributing simpler. I don't need to understand all the mechanics of HA/Node-Red/OpenHAB to add support for new devices. All I need to know is something like REST and what the contract is and I am done.

clear ferry
#

To make the integration all you need to know is python

#

And then you can do whatever you want after that

tidal bronze
#

Nest mini idle 2.8w, interesting

north lark
#

Why limit potential contributers to a language?

#

Why make them set up a whole dev environment for HA when a small tiny standalone service would be enough?

low harness
#

Pretty much anything can be integrated with Home Assistant via MQTT. That's as close to an API as you will get IMO. See e.g. Zigbee2MQTT, EspHome, Plejd2mqtt, Tasmota, MySensors2mqtt, WLED... they all use or can use MQTT to communicate with Home Assistant.

#

And that's just the stuff I've personally used.

I actually did this in college once at the end of the semester and our dorm room we would get charged if there was dents on the wall.

Obviously they were dents on the wall because we would take our mice and Chuck them at the wall at mach 10 after we got slammed in League.

So I took some duct tape put it on the wall and ripped off a sample of the paint and then I took that paint sample to Lowe's got it color matched got a pint of it and then proceeded to paint all the holes over and fill the holes with tape and then paint over the tape

I looked into that, I couldn't find a transparent one that was big enough.

#

Some people were saying you could peel the film backing off of one and have a transparent screen

I can't even find any transparent ones larger than price tags :/

prisma briar

Before asking a technical question in our channels, please do the following:

  1. Try to find an answer by searching the archives of the forum
  2. Try to find an answer by searching the Web
  3. Try to find an answer by reading the manual
  4. Try to find an answer by reading the FAQ
  5. Try to find an answer by inspection or experimentation.
  6. Try to find an answer by asking a skilled friend.
  7. If you're a programmer, try to find an answer by reading the source code

When you ask your question, display the fact that you have done these things first; this will help establish that you're not being a lazy sponge and wasting people's time. Hah!

I take it you live in a country that allows you film other peoples properties \ public roads then

Not too sure on the law tbh, I'm in the UK, the cameras came with the house when I bought it, apart from the doorbell one, which I upgraded from the old doorbell video camera.

snow hedge

This is the camera that caught it, it's not exactly "pointed at the road", it covers my driveway, but that just so happens to cover the road, and it caught them pushing the motorbike down the road, and the doorbell opposite caught some audio

Apparently it is legal in the UK

I only have a couple of things set in the config as well. agentaddress, sysDescr, sysName, sysLocation, agentSecName, rwuser
Iirc. I run it with v3. Not sure anymore how things authenticate o.0

fallow glen

yes ongy, I am doing all that kind of stuff but it's taking a while, as the docs aren't great for doing things out of the ordinary 🙂

#

oh okay....fair enuff...makes sense

dusky plank

Munin is simple. You have the server and nodes, everything gets indexed and fetched automatically

#

On the clients you just need the munin-node package

If you still want to do snmp it can do that too

Will keep that in mind! Thanks!

err noob question. i setup pfsense on metal on a pc with onboard nic and 2 port pcie nic, and i see that ive been assigned a lan but wan has not been assigned. since i have 3 ports, whats the effective way to determine which ports i plug in for wan and lan so that i can change settings in the router admin page?

glacial knot

plug one in, check which one changes state 😮

wise garden

state is reflected in pfsense home screen then i assuming

🤷 I don't use pfsense. But that's how you usually figure out which physical port is which logical one
