I dunno about that

Sounds about right

Carrots instead of chips

clever mortar

That too, there's options for fruit bags or carrot bags, or even side salads, instead of chips

forest edge
#

your mcdonalds does chips? or do you mean fries?

clear ferry

No, we aren't french

#

Thankfully

clever mortar

They do fries, sadly

#

But here we call them all chips

Yea, the new automations screen is not good. I don't see the point of collapsing everything, it adds a ton of pointless clicks to make everything visible again. Putting rename/mode/run/disable/enable in the menu instead of in a block at the top of the screen like it was is straight up obnoxious.

#

There's no easy toggle on the list anymore, you have to hit a stupid menu again.

#

Hiding things behind menus to use less of the screen != a cleaner interface.

#

Sometimes I wonder if the people designing UIs (in all kinds of programs, not just this one instance in HA) ever actually try using it like an end-user would.

forest edge
#

@static schooner That Litter Robot 4 just showed up.. so nice of whiskers to deliver something that costs that much without any kind of heads up whatsoever. not even a tracking number

#

I'd been so pissed if I came home later and saw it/or not seen it

static schooner
#

I confess that I also ordered one as a backup to the v3 that I have in part because it stopping mid-cycle a lot and just generally becoming less reliable. Then I spent a long time cleaning the old one and it's much better now

finite atlas
forest edge
#

yea not much can really go wrong, the control board is only like 80 bucks and the motor that drives the drum is even cheaper

#

no real point to ever toss a v3

#

v4 on the other hand.. well i guess i'll find out soon enough

static schooner
#

I replaced the rubber liner while cleaning it and my cats are much happier now

forest edge
#

did it get the damage from the urine?

static schooner
#

you can pretty much disassemble the whole thing

forest edge
#

whjat the liner cost? not looked that up yet

static schooner
#

one of my cats shredded it, and then "stuff" got under it

#

I think it was like $50

forest edge
#

shredded it? lol that was a dedicated cat lol

#

mine has some acid like marks on the bottom from the acidity of the urine but not in a shape worth replacing atm

static schooner
#

if a cat doesn't think they've adequately covered their deposit, they keep at it for a while

#

to be honest, I really let it get too dirty

forest edge
#

lol

static schooner
#

it took a long time to thoroughly clean every bit

forest edge
#

i only ever had to change out the drawer once every two weeks and always put two small coffee can scoops of litter on drawer change

static schooner
#

litter dust gets everywhere, and then it turns into sludge if it gets wet during the cleaning

forest edge
#

you leave the cycle time at default?

#

I think i upped mine to 7 mins or something

static schooner
#

yes, the ~10mins post-cat

#

whatever the default is

forest edge
#

default is short

#

like 3 mins

#

and normal litter cannot clump right in that amount of time

#

15 mins

#

is what i set mine too

static schooner
#

I use the Tidy Cats litter and I don't feel like it takes too long to clump

forest edge
#

thats what I use

static schooner
#

I also want to take the opportunity of the new one to relocate their litterbox area. Right now, it's in my laundry room, which is rather small and is the path to and from the garage. it's in the way, and litter gets tracked everywhere

forest edge
#

The Wait Time is a timer countdown function, or the elapsed time starting from when your cat exits the Litter-Robot globe until the unit starts a clean cycle. It can be set for 3, 7, or 15 minutes on Litter-Robot 3, or 3, 7, 15, 25, or 30 minutes on Litter-Robot 4. The default Wait Time is 7 minutes.

#

ah default is 7 mins, so i upped mine to 15

#

30 mins on the LR4.. crazy lol

static schooner
#

I haven't really felt that it needed to be longer

#

the key is to get the right amount of litter in there so they don't end up digging to the bottom, I think

#

globe liner was $60 and my 4 is in "build and test"

forest edge
#

for me it was sticky cause it didn't have enough time to absorb into the clay. it would just stick to like that mesh strainer etc

#

after i upped it I didn't have any issues

static schooner
#

I wish I had a better place for it. I chuckle at the pictures they have of it being in a wood-paneled office

#

Resolute Desk + Litter Robot 4

forest edge
#

it's lighter

#

I could tell that from the get go

#

box is a little smaller than what the v3 came into as well

static schooner
#

they're basically shipping a bunch of air

forest edge
#

i dunno, hope not. the price of this sucker was like 200 more than what I paid for the L3

static schooner
#

I think it came preassembled?

forest edge
#

it better lol

static schooner
#

it could be smaller if they stacked the globe parts

forest edge
#

mine is still in the box in the garage

#

not gonna open it till the girl gets home

static schooner
#

I'm trying to figure out how I can convince my cats that their litter box is now upstairs and at the other end of the house

#

I'm thinking that the spare bedroom that I never go in would be a good place

forest edge
#

you take the cats in the room and show them the litter box

#

they remember

#

i never had issues with moving litter boxes

#

never put a cat into the litterbox tho.. i learned that the hard way a long time ago

#

cat like rejected going into that litterbox ever since lol

static schooner
#

I'm sure you're right - they really don't want to go outside the catbox, so they'll probably remember

#

and yeah, especially one that's enclosed like the robot

#

#

We are thinking moving to an apartment so 60-70sqm. Is it many who find a use of smart home in apartment's or is it the end of smart home for me? I dont see too much to automate vs a house :/

forest edge
#

little things exist in apartment life too

#

just use tape instead of screws

late gate
#

it would be an owned apt hopefully

umbral cliff
#

Blinds

last cedar
#

But still just as much automation in an appartment vs house

umbral cliff
last cedar
#

Lots of the electrical systems don't want people messing with, the electric system is shared with other appartments

#

I am not saying they don't know how do it it properly

umbral cliff
#

Not usually? Should have a circuit breaker set per apartment

last cedar
#

I am saying it will save you a lot of headache when they come and blame you for that you added something

umbral cliff
#

Wouldn't be able to meter easily unless they're split

last cedar
umbral cliff
#

If your stuff is going past the meter into other properties then something else is badly wrong

#

Since that could affect you in a house too

last cedar
#

May be different there but I would have been stoned to death by our company if we even touched anything

umbral cliff
#

In Aus we have everything completely separate. Like a house. From meter to circuit breakers to our apartment all dedicated for us. Only thing it becomes shared is on the other side of the meter. Like your normal house connection with mains input anyway

#

Adding a Shelly on the light switch for example isn't going to affect others

last cedar
#

The meters are all 2 way here, not special ones for appartments, that are installed new

umbral cliff
#

Think ours can be the same. They're all smart meters here. Standard items for houses or apartments

#

I can have anything added here and as long as it doesn't break the main input fuse or circuit breaker then it's fine

#

And that part is just because it'll trip and cut power to my apartment

#

Unless I'm misunderstanding how things work, it shouldn't really matter to put in a Shelly or whatever. Just be conscious if a fire starts you're not just burning down your apartment

wise garden
prisma briar
#

Yea, [number, number, number][] doesn't make sense. I'm curious what code is causing that.

dusky plank
#

nvm it was typescript handling arrays... a bit strange

hushed basalt
#

Typescript can be a bit dumb sometimes

#

But in this case it's likely correct

#

It's likely something like

const lightSequence= [[100, 50, 20],[200, 20, 40]]
function transitionLights (sequence: [number, number, number][]) { //... }
#

where the variable was only loosely inferred as an array of array of numbers while the parameter was strictly requiring array children of 3 element arrays

dusky plank
#

it was

// works
await lib.method([[x0,y0,z0],[x1,y1,z1],[...]])

vs

// does not work
arr = [[x0,y0,z0],[x1,y1,z1],[...]]
await lib.method(arr)

and I still have no idea why but meh

hushed basalt
#

Yeah because the assignment to array looses the direct inference it would get by being passed directly into the param

#

Try const arr = // (previous value) as const

#
const arr = [[x0,y0,z0],[x1,y1,z1],[...]] as const
await lib.method(arr)
#

Or use a function to assign the values to arr, with a declared return type of [number, number, number][]

dusky plank
#

that is weird but ok I get it now I think, the compile time is what I usually forget, I think in node still

clear ferry

prisma briar
#

Got the touchscreen installed on the remote I'm making and got it rendering a menu from the menu data minus the correct icons, since I don't have those done yet. Got it sending service requests to HA and executing what I click on.

glacial knot
#

nice!

prisma briar
#

esp32 goes into a deep sleep after 30s (I might change that), the interrupt line from the touchscreen IC wakes it up. I'm also considering getting an accelerometer with an interrupt line to wake it up when it gets picked up.

#

Sometimes it derps for a few seconds when trying to connect to wifi after coming out of deep sleep

#

I'm also considering switching from a YAML parser reading a block of yaml at boot for the config to a pre-compiler that turns the yaml into all the structs I want.

#

I keep hitting low memory and having to go adjust something somewhere to make it take less.

#

And the more I think about it the less I think making it pull a YAML file off of a network server on powerup like I was thinking is necessary.

glacial knot
#

pulling a file is interesting if you ever want to share it. So people don't have to fiddle with the compilation to get their config in

prisma briar
#

I was thinking of having a menu on it to configure wifi.

#

I could make it have a menu for that then you send it a yaml file over a socket or something. It could write it to eeprom and if there's one present in eeprom it uses that over the compiled-in one.

#

That's what I've got for the yaml so far, the TV menu all works and makes calls to HA using the data in the yaml. None of the other menus are really made yet.

#

Between the screen taking no power except when redrawing and that controller for the touchscreen sending interrupts that let me put the esp32 into a deep sleep mode I'm hoping for months to years of battery life with it.

#

I haven't measured it yet but from the datasheets I've been reading I think I'm going to be between .1mA and .2mA of idle power draw.

#

Maybe another 100microamps if I end up getting that motion sensor ic to wake it on movement.

#

The esp board I'm using has a li-ion/li-po charger on it too, which is convenient.

#

I also need to figure out why I can't free() a random 4k block of memory I malloc'd without an assert getting thrown. I can free the other like 40 blocks being allocated during yaml parsing just fine, but not this one.

#

Hmm, I wonder if malloc is trying to allocate it on the stack instead of the heap or something stupid.

glacial knot
#

malloc is not allowed to touch the stack

prisma briar
#

Yea, that's what I thought, but I haven't dug through what ESP-IDF is doing on the backend.

#

It's not that major, it's only causing like 4KB to leak, but it's bugging me that I don't know why free() fails. It throws an assert that the address I'm trying to free is outside of the heap.

glacial knot
#

sounds like memory corruption 😮

prisma briar
#

I think I'd be seeing more instability/oddness elsewhere if it was memory corruption

#

Might be a buffer too small somewhere.

Hello Team! I would like to ask about your experiences and ask for help. My issue is 2.4GHz WiFi. I moved to a new house connected everything but I cannot make 2.4GHz WiFI work.

#

What I tried: Solve Interference , No neighbours with WiFi, im middle of nowhere.
Kill my other networks like Zigbee, Bluetooth etc...
Change router
Change clients
Factory reset both clients and router ( both router ).

#

The problem: as soon I go to WiFi settings on my laptop or phone and click to my WiFi 2.4GHz, it says error I cannot connect. 5GHz works perfectly.

Today I tried a 3rd router but same happened.

only DHCP from 192.168.0.2-254 , 192.168.0.1 is the router. default settings didnt changed anything.

certbot fails to automatically renew my route53 certs every damn time. It works fine when I do it manually

#

drives me nuts. I think there's an open issue for it

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I switched to dehydrated and haven't looked back

static schooner
#

it's frustrating because it won't let you renew unless it's within x of expiration, so it's hard to troubleshoot

I found one ant mysteriously crawling on my phone this morning and now I'm afraid that there may be more somewhere. I think it's a law of physics that there's never just one ant

clear ferry
#

It is never one

#

They don't stray too far from the hive

dusky plank
#

ffs

#

adguard settings are also not included in the opnsense backup

#

off to dd'ing the partition out of the .raw backup and mount that damn ufs to get to /usr/local

adguard works just really good for me, my gf doesn't even buy spotify premium anymore because there are no ads anyway

Spotify family is nice, 5 accounts for the price of roughly one

And offline data

Holy duck boys

I ordered $900 worth of shades on AliExpress and they sent me the wrong motor it wasn't zigbee enabled it was standard RF

#

Just a cautionary tale for anybody ordering blinds online make sure they actually have the zigbee motor in stock otherwise you're going to spend 6 hours like I was today trying to figure out why the hell it won't pair to your hub

prisma briar
#

"Can we refund 50 dollars" wtf, no, send the correct items.

static schooner
#

That is from someone who does not understand the product

forest edge
#

blame @clear ferry he's the only reason aliexpress remains open

bitter pecan
#

Yeah I told him to basically go fuck himself and to give me four zigbee motors

#

Reluctantly they actually agreed and said they'll send them over

#

But how do you fuck that up is what I want to know like I specifically asked several times throughout the entire ordering process to make sure is zigbee and even on my order sheet which they sent me a picture of it showed that it was a zigbee motor

#

They even sent me a zigbee hub for free in the box so like someone in the shop really must not know what the hell the difference is between those am 25 motors

#

I mean otherwise shades are great which sucks that it's the case cuz I can't fault them they're actually really good quality rollers but my God someone needs a pair of glasses over there

#

Ngl AliExpress has the best niche zigbee devices for sale and I WILL die on that hill

#

Like wow that's niche

They should be required to release firmware and programming tools after like 18 months so that devices can be repurposed and kept out of a landfill. That'd also fix the security issue on more popular devices.

clear ferry
#

I wish they at least specified programming details when they eoled a product

glacial knot
#

There should also be a requirement to open the API specs when servers are shut down

clear ferry
#

Yes

dusky plank
#

the architecture <select> on the opnsense download page is very important

clear ferry
#

Is it?

dusky plank
#

there is just one architecture 😄

prisma briar
#

There's a few cool looking devices I'm missing out on because I refuse to buy anything I can't self-host all the services for.

#

But on the flipside if I stopped making any changes today my system should still work the same in 20 years time with just battery replacements.

#

I'd wager most HA users couldn't say that.

clear ferry
#

Would be the same here tbh

#

ZigBee devices have been very good to me

#

Except hue, that is shit quality

glacial knot
#

The Hues are working well for me. But I got all the Hue stuff on the Hue bridge, not the z2m

clear ferry
#

My problem has been hue hardware dying

#

Three bulbs so far

#

Out of 6 total

#

Out of my 80 or so tradfri/namron bulbs, none have died so far

forest edge
#

philips bulbs are made completely differently depending on what country they are sold in

#

overpriced junk regardless imo

low harness
#

2 of 8 Trådfri GU10 bulbs have survived more than two years outdoors for me. The replacement HUEs are trucking along.

#

I would have replaced them with Trådfri, but a HUE is slightly cheaper than a trip to IKEA.

clear ferry
#

Really? I have 14 outdoor tradfri ones

#

We have roughly the same climate i guess

#

-35 - 35 temperature range, pretty humid

forest edge
#

ugh why does opnsense gotta be so damn glitchy

tidal bronze
#

Still playing with marshmallows

clear ferry
#

Is opnsense glitchy ? I haven't had any issue since probably mid 2019

forest edge
clear ferry
#

Sounds plausible, I would probably exclude opnsense from my bi weekly update window

forest edge
#

#

today

#

not sure how that happened

#

pinging the dns every so often for the gateway monitoring can't possibly cause that

clear ferry
#

Are you running the same metric on both ?

forest edge
#

yea there is no indepth when setting up the failover

#

right now idling, my 4g connection pulls in more than my wan

#

it makes no sense lol

#

i have NO traffic going out of that interface

#

least according to the logs

#

other than the gateway monitoring pinging the dns server

#

now if i reboot the machine it will probably work as intended till opnsense decides to glitch agin

Tinkering......must be nice to have all the time on earth to play.
