south cradle
#

quick random question, not sure if it would fit under DIY

#

any of you mechanically inclined people can think of a better mail sensor for cluster type mailboxes?

#

mailman never opens it, just throws mail through the top hole

#

i currently added a horizontal hinge on the top admission hole, whose movement i'm detecting with a reed relay, but it only works if the hinge bends 50-90 degrees, like in the case of a full envelope being shoved in

#

if you shove the envelope sidewise, or put some small mail in (like a postit) it doesn't work.

lucid wraith
#

Optical sensor would work but requires continuous power. Could put multiple sensors of what you currently have

forest edge
#

simple motion sensor would work

south cradle
#

but wouldn't a PIR sensor also trigger if my neighbor gets mail?

forest edge
#

does the mail go into a joint tray?

lucid wraith
#

If it's inside your box

south cradle
forest edge
#

those boxes look like they are seperated boxes for each address

south cradle
#

every owner gets his own mailbox, all mailboxes have a top hole, a PIR sensor in one mailbox makes me think any motion near it would trigger the mailbox

forest edge
#

putting a motion sensor in one shouldn't trigger by someone else getting mail

#

how would it get triggered? it's inside a box

south cradle
#

i might be missing the point

#

we're talking about a PIR sensor that would detect the mailman beeing near the box, through the mailbox slot, right?

forest edge
#

no talking about a motion sensor inside the box that would only trigger when something enters that mail slit

#

it would also trigger when you open the box to get your mail too

finite atlas
#

could be solved with a switch that detects if the box is open or not

south cradle
south cradle
finite atlas
#

yeah, but it will register as "new mail has been added"

lucid wraith
south cradle
#

but... if I'm checking the mail manually, kinda defeats the purpose of having a sensor 🤨

#

oh, so the pir should face the way mail is shoved in, not peeking outside through the hole?

lucid wraith
#

Yes

south cradle
#

that might actually be genius

#

i considered piezo sensors on a hinge, thin film buttons on the bottom of the box, with a bumper - to detect mail being shoved in - but it would still need an array

lucid wraith
#

And I'd mount it on the door so it doesn't project through the hike somehow and false trigger

south cradle
#

yeah, i'm considering a doormount too, if only to be more surreptious, and hide an antenna through those outside holes and under a label

lucid wraith
#

You could also use a load cell with a sheet

#

By sheet I mean a plate to distribute the weight evenly

south cradle
#

that would probably work better than continously polling IRs, since the slower you poll IR sensor, the more chances you have to miss mail; with a load cell it doesn't matter

lucid wraith
#

But pir should work best very little power requirements I believe

south cradle
#

yep

#

that's prolly the best option

#

might be good enough to be placed in one corner and detect mail in the other corner, heh, even post-it sized

lucid wraith
#

You probably have a pir net don't have a suitable load cell. Try the pir see if it works

south cradle
#

i have a bunch of load cells too around, haha, but i was hoping to avoid them

south cradle
#

i actually love it, since it needs no physical changes to mail mailbox, not even my current horizontal hinge

#

the more surreptitious it is. the better

lucid wraith
south cradle
#

I'm not sure how to do that, mechanically speaking

#

if it triggers too early, it still needs to allow wide swing angles, for thick or long envelopes. if it triggers too late, it's just meh

lucid wraith
#

Or a plate that goes the entire length of the slot attached to the sensor

south cradle
#

oh, hmm, the hinge is currently mounted above - i should mention that. there's no way to mount it below, not easily and without some powertools or hotglue anyway

#

but, eh, even if it's mounted below - how would you trigger to both a few degrees and 90 degrees of swing?

lucid wraith
#

Is there a hinge already on the slot

south cradle
#

most contact switches with rollers i've tried eventually bent if mounted too close

#

nope, just an empty slot

lucid wraith
#

Could use a normally open switch with a hinge

clear ferry
#

What strange mailboxes

south cradle
#

a hinge would kinda make it look odd, compared to everything else, like "this guy doesn't want his mailed stolen with tweezers/whatever we use"

lucid wraith
#

When it falls back down it closes it

south cradle
#

they're cluster mailboxes used in condominiums, pretty popular in my country

south cradle
#

I kept messing with having the switch "behind" the hinge, in the part that flexes

#

a magnet behind the hinge, to make it stick to the door, when it falls down, might work even better

#

opening it would be a tad weirder, but not significantly

lucid wraith
#

Think pir is really best though if I recall they can be used with extremely low power even to trigger deep sleep wakeup

clear ferry
#

We either have these for apartment buildings

#

Or these for houses

south cradle
clear ferry
#

ZigBee PIR sensor has good battery life too, I haven't changed my battery in over 3 years

south cradle
#

oh yeah, i was thinking exactly atthose

clear ferry
#

Currently my outdoor mailbox had a ZigBee door sensor on it, 1+ year so far in all weather

south cradle
#

got some sonoff and ikea ones - haven't changed batts in two years

clear ferry
#

Aqara > tradfri > sonoff

south cradle
#

I'll probably have to throw some AAs in it, though, since the RF layer is a bit power hungry

lucid wraith
#

Any helium miners nearby

south cradle
#

could only make it work from those wall dug-in farraday cages through 8 floors of rebar with some SW12BW500 Lora

clear ferry
#

You could do deep sleep lora

south cradle
#

I got a Data-only hotspot and a TTN one, so yeah 🙂

#

yep

clear ferry
#

That will give you good battery life and replaceable battery

lucid wraith
#

Could use LORAWAN

clear ferry
#

Lorawan probably isn't worth it if it is within the same building

south cradle
#

that's exactly my thought, do LoRa when needs to signal stuff, deep sleep until some sensor 100% says so

clear ferry
#

Just point to point lora

south cradle
#

I already have some lorawan setup at home haha, TTN and DOHS on helium 😉

#

but nothing 'cept lora works - zigbee, plain old OOK or ASK, even tried PJON

#

guess 8 floors of rebar and the huge metal box aren't helping

lucid wraith
#

You were talking about using a small antenna outside

south cradle
#

but lora works, i'm mostly worried anything but some AA cells won't really enjoy 8-20 seconds of RF TXing

#

what I did is put a label on those tiny holes "please no ads - nominal mail only, I lost mail! thank you"

#

and got a whip antenna underneath

#

but went from -130 to -115...-110 on RSSI so... i'd rather not suggest my mailbox is more interesting to the curious passerby for those 15dbi

Does anyone do installs or help with setting up automations as a business? Wondering what rate I should charge for setting up automations/troubleshooting

clever mortar

There's a few people on the forums who do. What you charge will follow the same logic as for anything else and will be driven by what your local economy is like.

forest edge
#

with the exception of mom and pop type business's are there any cases of big businesses using HA?

slender warren
#

Just wondering what people charge so I get an idea. I was talking to a lutron integrater that does a bunch of other stuff and they said I could be their sub and do $125 an hour for setting up complex stuff and troubleshooting. I was wondering if that's a good rate

#

For home assistant and networking stuff

clever mortar
#

Well, good rate is all relative. What's a good rate for somebody living in Houston, Texas, will be different to what's a good rate for somebody living in the Australian outback, etc

I certainly would be charging more than that, but then I value my time (and experience) more highly

I've got a amcrest turret cam (https://amcrest.com/4k-poe-camera-turret-ip8m-t2599ew.html) along with a junction box (also from amcrest). Maybe overthinking it, but I'd like to mount it on a wall, however I'm concerned rain could get in between the camera and junction box and subsequently get inside to the wires, as there is no seal between the two (i could tape it up I guess) — has anyone done similar without issues?

clever mortar
#

Well, typically those are designed for ceiling mounting

#

Are you thinking of mounting it on a wall instead?

tawdry gull
#

Yeah on a wall instead, I've seen wall brackets for them, but they seem overly priced here in the UK (£35), the camera can be tilted so the horizon is correct if that helps so there's no wonky images

clever mortar
#

A quick look at the camera manual suggests you'll be fine, but you probably want to ensure that there's a drain hole at the bottom of the junction box

tawdry gull
#

makes sense, i have found some waterproof tape that I could use as a precaution too

<@&330946878646517761> Mods, I have a question about rule 6. It states no textwalls longer than 15 lines. I was previously accused by a moderator of violating this rule. The link to the message is below:
<#general-archived message>

I was told this is 19 lines, but I am not counting lines that only contain markdown syntax that does not get rendered into the actual readable part of the message. For example, fenced code blocks. If I include those, I do see 19 lines. But if I leave them out, I am actually at 15 lines which is well within the rules.

I can't tell if the mod triggered the bot or of it's automatic. If automatic, maybe the bot is looking at the raw message instead of the rendered one. In my view, I don't think syntax lines should count since they are invisible. Did I violate the rules or not? If you see my attached screenshot, the "rendered message" is 15 lines long by my count.

wet pilot
#

all lines in the message count

#

those newlines probably tipped it over

royal adder
#

Is that a technical limitation or on purpose for some other reason? Why do invisible lines matter?

wet pilot
#

because its a bot

#

it just counts lines

royal adder
#

Ok I can forgive the bot. But the moderator didn't read between the lines, so to speak, so my question is more about the real person aspect of this.

#

If you just look at my message without clicking the edit button, do you see more than 15 lines? Am I counting this right? This seemingly straightforward rule is difficult to understand and follow.

clever mortar
#
  1. It's automatic
  2. Your post was over 15 lines
  3. What you think should count is irrelevant
  4. Do read #rules again
#

These rules are not to be interpreted how you like, there are no "loopholes." Anyone claiming not to be breaking the rules due to it "not being in the rules" will result in the according consequence.

royal adder
#

What I think should count is absolutely relevant because otherwise it's impossible for me to follow the rule. Like I said -- if invisible lines count, I broke the rule. If invisible lines do not count, then I was falsely accused. So yes, I think it does matter. By the way my goal is to not be argumentative, I am striving to be a good citizen and understand the rules better.

To me, the spirit of the rule says that only lines that get rendered matter. Because lines that do not get rendered are not disruptive to the community. Or put another way, they do not make a larger message which is the point of the rule.

clever mortar
#

___These rules are not to be interpreted how you like, there are no "loopholes." ___

#

The bot only cares about what you post, you posted 19 lines. Nineteen is greater than 15.

royal adder
#

With respect, though, I'm looking for more than just 1 moderator's opinion. I'd like everyone to be on the same page. I sure would like to avoid breaking the rule with 1 moderator and it being OK with another. Again, just trying to make sure I am 100% understanding.

royal adder
#

Oh and I think you left out an important part in your quote from the rules:

If you are unsure about something, please ask either myself or the community.
That's exactly what I am trying to do here.

# junior forge It has been clarified, you don't want to listen

What I understand so far is that the bot counts syntax lines, but I don't know if that's a "bug" in the bot. Honestly I wouldn't (and didn't) reasonably assume that non-rendered lines would count. Why am I being reprimanded?? The rules say to ask questions if I'm unsure. That's what I'm doing.
