#Godzilla Minus One
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I don't know if there are even that many spoiler things for the movie to be discussed but just in case
So glad we got a thread for my religion
Finally
This was my first foreign film I've seen in theatres and what a first one it was
Also my first Godzilla in theatres also actually
Okay now we need to group together and spam until Hiya toys makes a MO figure
I haven't seen a lot of Godzilla but from what I have seen, the way that atomic breath was handled here goddamn
All the other ones I've seen it's just LASER BEAM
the way it’s literally like. another nuke
This was a cool new take on the atomic breath
Here you actually felt the atomic part
like the way he blasts it and like five city blocks just fucking evaporate
It’s like it shoots an atom and then the atom breaks
and on top of that. mushroom cloud!
all the shots of him against the smoke
my god
goddamn renaissance paintings
also can we talk about that first scene when hes chasing them on the boat
the pacing of that shit was fucking horrifying
the way they barely start to move and then godzilla just slowly turns
All that ocean stuff gave huge Jaws vibes which is not a bad thing
and theyre just inching forward while he creeps behind them but theres still a massive sense of urgency
i do really hope we get something on whatever the fuck happened with noriko. cause like she got off way too light aftering being hit by the blast of a nuke. and there was also the shit on her neck
im so curious about whatever that is
maybe she’ll turn into a shin godzilla humanoid mutant
i kinda assume she got hit by a piece of godzilla. since they mentioned there were pieces of it all over ginza
This movie definitely had Jurassic park inspirations. More dinosaur behavior
i liked mini godzilla just chomping down on ppl and yeeting them lmao
Yeah definitely felt JP inpirations also
also the music in this was so good
besides the obvious classic themes returning
whenever those bells and fucking hellish choir came in u knew some shit was ab to go down
Idk what it is but this was the first Godzilla film where the theme really stuck w me
Like I genuinely forgor how the theme went but I don't think that will be the case after this film
Godzilla kinda cute
Same. I’m not even like some crazy Godzilla fan but the theme is so good and fun
SOMEONE WAS SLEEPING HALF THE MOVIE IN MY THEATER
SNORING ASS MOTHERFUCKER
Luckily they left halfway through
Very good movie
Should’ve killed that guy
Got close
I had a crying baby in my theater
Was quite during all the loud ass godzilla scene, cried basically every other scene
It was literally
someone in my theater had fucking infinite soda can glitch
i counted 4-5 different soda cans opening
Cans??
yeah 😭😭😭
Where did he get cans?!
mustve smuggled them in or something
That’s risky af. They could explode
babe can you grab my 6 pack from the fridge its crucial for godzilla
At least sneak in bottles. Better format
yeah they could explode when i fucking throw a bomb at him for opening 5 fucking cans during a movie
the sad part is it was just me and my friend before that couple appeared
And they didn’t even share
Before this film, the only Godzilla movies I’d seen were form the Monsterverse, and I felt there were mixed results there. Didn’t care for 2014, King of the Monsters seemed good, GvK was fine, but overall giant monster movies haven’t really been my forte. This new movie, Godzilla Subtracting One, might be my favorite film of the year. (Either that or GOTG3). It made me wanna go back and watch more Godzilla movies. So far I’ve seen the original (Japanese version of course) which was more serious than I expected and really good. Shin Godzilla I thought was fine overall, kind of a goofy look for Godzilla at first and weird editing, but the effects later in the film were really good. And Godzilla v Hedorah is bonkers but I kinda like that.
oh yeah a lot of the classic japanese ones get crazy
By the 1970s Japan considers Godzilla a superhero lol
Sometimes fun crazy, sometimes stupid crazy
son of godzilla noises
The dancing was worse imo
You hate his spawn!
Baby Yoda wannabe
Godzilla forgot to wipe
basketball commercial
Amazing
The ejector seat manuever is what I’ve been saying I wish they’d done with Finn on Crait in TLJ
I love that you can barely see Shikishima eject. Like bro is barely on screen for a frame
But, it was kinda obvious that they installed a ejector seat
Yeah I saw it coming
Alternative ending where he ejects a second later and slams into the roof of godzilla mouth
The ejector was obvious, but the girl being alive surprised me
Tbh I wasn't really surprised she was alive, more so that she basically only had minor injuries
Then I saw the last scene and was like, ah she got hit by a piece of godzilla
I like that the archetypes were really simple but very earnest and well performed
great cast
Basically the whole movie, very simple in premise and messaging but extremely earnest and well done
i love when tachibana shows up and just whacks him over the head with a metal rod
She was yeeted too
I still think its funny that Minami Hamabe within a year went from being the female lead in shin kamen rider, to being the female lead in a godzilla movie.
so this is basically guaranteed a sequel thanks to its success right
i really hope so
I think it would get a sequel anyway. Worse godzilla films have gotten them
Can’t imagine this American popularity wouldn’t convince them of a sequel
it would be crazy seeing this godzilla fighting another monster
I just hope he regens far enough in the future that this family can get some rest
idk ab that chief
I will be upset if they have to fuck up a new Godzilla immediately
Mechagodzilla please 🙏
Tbh I get the vibe the next film will have mothra
Just give them a few years please 😭
noriko’s wound mutates her into a monster to fight godzilla
i honestly am really curious what that was
Godzilla cucks him and steals their daughter
like obv shes infected w some godzilla radiation shit. but the implications are so ambiguous

I didn’t catch that
I'm glad it wasn't a post credit thing it was just the ending
Yeah the mark on her neck was moving, and they stated after the ginza attack that pieces of godzilla were found all over the area. So I think its pretty clear she got a piece if it stuck in her during the blast
Would make sense if she got cancer
we need to phase out post credits until they’re special again
honestly would be funny(😦) if there are all these theories ab her having some sort of mutation or something and it turns out she just has like godzilla cancer
im honestly surprised theyve never gone that direction before
Or regular cancer. Either one would be a final fuck you from goji
Yeah I’d like a cancer metaphor Godzilla
I mean, I saw people saying she probably had radiation poisonings. But im also pretty sure radiation poisoning doesn't like, actively advance across your body like a parasite
shikishima cant have shit 💀
Maybe this one does
could just be a visualization to get the point across with the excuse being that its a special godzilla induced tumor or something
that feels the most likely
with this tone i dont see anything much crazier happening
Or maybe fast forward. Akira is the star
She turns into one of those Mothra fairies or whatever
do u mean akiko
would be based
I think it would be shitty though if they actually gave noriko cancer or some shit though. Considering the actual themes and shit of the movie is on how valuable life is and giving Shikishima hope
mothra in this continuity would be kinda sick
Maybe she can like talk to Godzilla somehow now
Maybe she could be telepathic in general
Then she's able to find a way to bring him peace so he retreats on his own
I'm really trying to find a way for this to end without more death 😭
If this was any other continuity. I'd say she'd be a pilot for mecha godzilla. Considering some of the more notable ones in the past have had some kind of connection to godzilla
she sits godzilla down and shows him godzilla vs megalon, turning him good and based
the doctor builds wooden mechagodzilla
which reminds me i like that they carved a little wood dinosaur for the plan demonstration
Plan?
But also, I think they've set it up enough that if mecha godzilla does happen. Shikishima will probably be the pilot
did anyone else think they were gonna lift the curtain and reveal the oxygen destroyer 😭
when the doc demonstrates the freon in the little tank
I really do love how creative the plan to kill godzilla was. Like it obviously doesn't work. But I give them credit attempting something unique
You ever seen styrofoam dragged underwater? Horrifying
godzilla being dragged down and then instantly going dark was so freaky
the way he crumbled and the beams of light shot out of him was so cool too
I loved that effect
If he wasn’t Deadpool powered, he might not have survived
i love when godzilla is just a fucking freak and has super different characteristics
I also love how he really still kept that force of nature element
I have a #ChillDebate
Saw a post by someone saying people should not compare the different versions of Godzilla
Why not?
And while I do agree people should stop punching down on the people who like certain versions, I think it’s silly to just not compare at all
i mean in principle i get it, i personally dont feel the need bc they’re all unique. but it kind of begs comparison sometimes lol
Like fandom rivalry is stupid. But comparing and contrasting to explain why you might prefer one over the other, without insulting other fans, should be fine
its weird to just outright say people shouldnt have those kinds of discussions at all

mfs gatekeeping talking ab godzilla now 😭
It has shades of “just love all SW movies/shows and don’t compare”
Do not ask questions, or we put you in the bad opinion jail
I also love how godzilla was originally just a freaky, but largely peaceful dinosaur before getting nuked.
Like bro just wanted to vibe in peace with his island boys
That first reveal was the scariest part for me
Vibe in peace with his island boys.. while eating them
Nah, the novel of the film confirmed he vibed along side the people of odo Island
He was basically a local deity for them
I wasn’t so sure about Godzilla’s overall look at the start, but when he showed up again in the water later, from that point on he looked amazing
The boat chase is legitimately one of the best set pieces in a godzilla films
Also when he died and the beams shot out of his body I couldn’t help thinking of the dragons in Skyrim lol
It was all very well balanced in terms of stakes and plausibility
you know what i love ab this movie’s depiction of godzilla itself? it really makes you realize just how scary godzilla is conceptually. like there are versions of godzilla that are probably creepier in design like shin, but with this one you really take it all in. like eventually the citizens stop running and are kind of just in awe of this fucking impossible thing. it doesnt make sense why hes so big, so indestructible. unlike say shin who is literally just vomiting out its pain theres no reason he destroys things. his fucking atomic breath is highlighted so well. they kept cutting back to the citizens looking in horror and all i could think was, fucking me too man 😭
i love how sluggish it was
so creepy
Yeah this is the first time I actually found Godzilla terrifying
And the aftermath of the bombings hit harder than any post apocalyptic movie I’ve seen
One thing I thought was funny is Godzilla seemed to have a grudge in the first city attack. Like the buildings killed his dog
also the actual atomic breath build up is godly. They knew the alignment and delivered
Just seeing the conditions people lived in and what the ey lost
who the FUCK put this BUILDING HERE AAAAAAA
I really like that he's almost intelligent feeling
Like there's something weirdly personal about it all but he also is acting so animalistic
theres so much ambiguity to how he acts and i love that
“Fuck yer shit! And fuck yer shit!”
I think this is a moment where I could tell it’s green screen but I loved the commitment to the performance
although, and this isnt a fault of the film or anything, there was one moment when his head was following the plane that he looked just like yoshi and i was just like awww 😭
Also the people filming godzilla were so fucking dedicated. I fully respect them for standing there while watching it destory everything around them
that was a nice parallel w the original
It was definitely an homage to- yeah that
Finally, representation
I do like the original version of that more
i think the really just somber drawn out gloom of that scene in the original really helped
but i liked the chaos of this rampage too
YOOOO they just announce a black and white version of the film
sick
Snyderize let’s go
personally i liked the colors a lot tho
This at least has a reason
can i just talk about how much i love watching movies that are like. well color graded. and well lit. and actually look like movies
esp blockbusters bc thats especially rare for those nowadays
The lighting on the island at the beginning 🤌
so damn good
HelloGreedo in black and white when
Well the helmet is a good start
……………okay that does look cool
lol i like the “-1.0/C”
godzilla at -1 celsius
I.O.C
I Owe Cock
I also love how much damage godzilla takes. Like actually giving a physical reason as to why it cant spam atomic breath
Well he’s gotta hold still to get enough propulsion
People question how godzilla can stand upright in the water. And I think the answer obvious
Its those fucking thighs
Goddamn
I assumed he was padding
and its honestly creepy when he goes limp or sinks and then comes back seconds later
when they first blow off half his face and he’s effectively dead and it just. reforms like nothing
I love when the plane is getting close to him he has like these brief quick lunges
Like he still has that instinct to move quick but his body isn't as capable anymore
“Shoo”
I honestly love characters who really have kinda low durability. But have a healing factor that basically makes any damage pointless. Let's you do absolutely fucked up shit
Interesting. Thanks America for the nukes, Japan would’ve been so boring then
Got my mechagodzilla socks ready for minus one!!

Life is worth living. Holy SHIT
Ahhh it was fucking great
Should I ask the theatre for a poster
Since it’s the last showing
His roars and the theme song shook the fuckin' seats.
I do find it kinda cool that his roars weren't just the original roars
They kinda played around with the sound. It's pretty neat
yeah i love the classic roar but the audio quality is so dated it sticks out like a sore thumb in modern uses
they made it sound good again without just entirely changing it
The only thing I'm somewhat torn about is the ending
godzilla was also a little torn by the end of it
I am glad that Koichi got a happy-ish ending, but... I dunno, a part of me wishes that there was a more bleak ending.
I think it works really well though, so I'm not complaining
You missed our discussions yesterday, about cancer being an element in the possible future
Though, I am not really sure how to feel that they teased that Godzilla isn't dead.
It was hype af seeing him heal up, but... I dunno, I kinda wish that they kept it vague
Well once you introduce the healing factor into the situation, there’s always gonna be that question of “are they really dead?”
Overall though. 2nd best Godzilla movie. Right behind the original
Shin Godzilla is 3rd
I know there were a ton of great moments in the movie, but this might be my favorite moment in the whole movie
cant get over that scene man
I know it's like... the least important bit of dialogue in the movie, but... It's just delivered so well
"For your consideration in all categories" goes hard as fuck
It won win most radioactive. Oppenheimer has that down 😔
oppenheimer designed a bomb, godzilla survived it 🥱
You notice a kaiju has never won an Oscar. Makes you realize some things
Ant man

frankly
i wish we as a society withdrew our collective interest from the oscars
no more arbitrary awards given to random movies selected by a committee of old farts
Are the nominees out already? Cause if so wouldn't this be a campaign for next year?
Art
If anyone wants the plane from the climax, they made one
