I don't remember any canonical explanations, it usually just says that the remains of their brain memory still allow them to show agressiveness and use their guns. Controller is a whole other story, though, his psy-abilities allow him to zombify stalkers and actually use them as walking troops, so it makes a bit more sense on that part

The "challenge" is super simple
Swim down a small hallway and you're done
But if you turn left you get flung back to the start, if you move forwards you get pushed back to the start, go in sideways and you get pushed back to the start... Turning is nearly impossible and past the halway point, the game visually freaks out and either dies or pushes you back to the start.
