I typically create a sort of de-attachable "Booster" using atmospheric thrusters to launch a ship out of a planet, though that's usually for ships that will always be in space

you could fit some large atmospheric thrusters to cut down on the hydrogen usage when exiting the planet

usually you have 2 buttons reserved to change the distance

otherwise you could overshoot

Another thing to note: You cannot jump from or Into the gravitational pull of a planet

The drive simply refuses to operate

Before in the playthrough I tried avoiding shotguns as much as possible because everyone playing the mod (including me) always carries shotguns due to how good they are. But during my Radar breakthrough I picked up that gun from a Monolith soldier, repaired it later on and decided to use it for once, especially considering I haven't seen any traders sell it
