Yeah, basically you find a grayscale picture, and trace over it. Add shading according to the picture (tip, a q tip or cotton ball works well for blending) and highlights

I think mechanical is better for shading, but both work well. It's the nice feeling of mechanical, and also I find the leads are smaller which some like me like, versus the thickness of the normal pencil and the better line quality.

Tubes are too shiny for a rough and rusted material

Is it dirt or oxydation/rust ?whats the material ? Iron, steel, which metal ?

Your modeler just should take more refs for the texturing. Model is already pretty cool. Texturing isnt following the modeling quality. Keep up !

To answer your questions, I use an iOS app called Dottable, where I’m able to trace an image into pixel art so I can choose the colors and size. All of it is hand made. I don’t however copy and instantly reformat. If I were to do that, the image wouldn’t convert very well
