HDRP does have a radius parameter for lights. Radius in lighting is a relatively new thing in game engines, making the light source bigger and shading smoother

Ok, let's talk a bit. Performance isn't depending on how many lights you have. It depends on how many objects are concerned by a light and if shadows are enabled. You can have 100 lights, if those have a small range, not many objects will get lighted by it, it'll still get correct fps. You can have 10 giant lights, impacting multiple rooms at the same time and you'll get awful fps.
There are many light in our rooms, and most of those are faking light bounces. range is low, very localized, and shadows are completely disabled. in a room, there are only main lights sources which get shadows. Left lights won't get any shadows, and will stay in a small range, low def.
Also, we don't use volumetric. Volumetric effects you're seeing in game are faked with some shaders.

Because the model isn't separated, it's trully a very old one. so each light getting in contact with it concerns the whole area, mostly, even if lights don't have the rest of the map in range
- it's a very large area. and we have to use large lights yes, because of its emptiness
- culling cannot really work here, since you just see everything around you
surface rework, NW will learn how to make a sightline that isn't the entire zone

Huh that actually makes a lot of sense now. Also can you explain the “flatness” HDRP has sometimes? Like on the surface, on Gate A, the lighting seems to not affect the specularity? I notice this inconsistency a lot in the game. Things either appear too diffuse or glossy.

This light is very large, which result in a flatter and uniform amount of light everywhere, at a low intensity. + the fact wood is flat. + the actual angle + reflection probe not being very good
If you get under the next light, which is a lot closer from you, you'll start getting more reflections, because light is closer
i think part of the problem is the lack of AO on the viewmodels
AO isn't really playing a lot in the reflection quality, but it certainly helps to get better volumes and shapes in models

Because game is procedural, so we can't apply baking on any rooms. it doesn't work since you can't move rooms at runtime with baked lightmaps. Surface zone is the only exception for that. However we got so much work to do on every other aspect, we prefer work on this one during SZ rework when it will happen.
Yet we must find the good workflow for a zone like this one before baking it
But cubemap reflections can even move in real-time (elevator)

reflections can, but not baked lightmap, Unity technologies has been struggling for years with this shit. 😭 they've implemented volumetric light probes tech, which sounds cool, but never tested it yet. Might be worth next unity version

yeah sometimes i use ai, but generally i prefer to do as much as i can manually, AI helps me refine certain things or create some textures
fr it's great for learning because on start you don't need to watch tutorials with predefined patterns how to do something, you just can learn based on your own ideas, where the execution can be different for each one
