basically the "dial" that is used to select the settings will be connected to the gears, when the player turns the gears it will rotate that settings plate

larger gears with bigger teeth would cause more damage on contact than small gears with small teeth

and assuming that 914 works by throwing whatever you put into it through those gears, it would make sense that the gears would be what changes the item

if you mesh 3 gears together they won't move because every gear resists the one next to it
