yeah I decided to reorganize the UI a little for that reason
i figured hotbar is still pretty critical (esp for new players) but speaking players can be a little more tucked away
I think for the sake of portfolio, I'm going to make some mockups for static screens and specific elements. After that if you're interested in more I'll add it by request to save time.

I wanted to give status effects icons for a while, but I've gone back and forth with implementation for some time now
I want intentionally subtle effects to be indicated somehow but I don't want UI to get in the way of that
do I think what I'll do is have unique animations and sometimes even sounds occur when you get different ones
I wasn't sure if that was just meant to be a really weird representation for the helmet (which wouldn't really make sense since all armor has helmets)

I think I want SL's UI to be a mixture of militant, modern, and tactical while still playing into the intended horrific nature of the game's premise. That is a particularly difficult feat with UI, so I have experimented with a few different icon art styles.

The notes I made in sharpie are primarily functional designs. I'm no animator, especially not in Unity. I'm basically just coming up with ideas of how it may look functionally, but there are lots of art styles I could apply to it.
Keep in mind though a lot of my design choices are based on preference of how I'd want the game to be played
I've basically overhauled the hotbar in this process
in multiple different ways
Also, the bar at the bottom in the middle is the stamina, right?
It's more of a personal preference thing, but I find bars like that are a lot easier to read if the size of the bar is decreased from one side rather than from both
So my big gripe with the existing stamina bar is that aside from the icon next to it, there isn't a lot making it distinct from the health values. This became way clearer to me when I had a game where a new player started freaking out because his health supposedly was drained when in reality he just hadn't learned the game had stamina yet.
I decided that those elements are not equally important, thus move them a bit away from eachother. Movement is very easy to forget due to muscle memory, so the stamina being a bit more in your face was the goal. I've thought about giving stamina a static value in the center to make it more readable, but I think it will do its job. I liked Helldivers 2 and FNAF: Security Breach's sprint animations, so I wanted to experiment with some of that.
In all honesty the feature I'm most excited to work on has to be subtitles. Hoping it will open more discussion about accessibility features that I can help work on in the future as well.
Should we have something like what Minecraft has?
Minecraft's subtitle feature is a bit obnoxious and hard to grasp since it's so nonstandard, but I like the arrows updating based on direction.
That actually reminds me, I plan to add a damage compass to SL's UI. Will be toggle-able in settings though.

Primarily an accessibility concern. SL is a game a lot of people find overstimulating, my own pookiebear can't play SL because of how loud and chaotic it is with her disability. There are some features that ought to remain static and untouchable, like element organization, but ones that decide how playable the game is for disabled players are the ones I want to make customizable in general.
To some people, a damage compass is just more distracting. The same way that some people find subtitles more distracting than not. There are so many angles to those features that it's best to let the player decide the approach.

They said they wanted to make the facility look more like a laboratory so they're 100% going to lean more heavily into modern environments
yeah I went for a modern-ish kind of design language, but I also took a lot of reference from post-apocalyptic games like TLOU 1 and 2 to kind of even it out

I really like the subtitle idea it just needs to be kept a bit vague on what you are hearing
it should just say "Footsteps" for any footsteps you hear
There would probably be a certain threshold of how close the footsteps have to be for it to register in the captions
Maybe it'll take into factor the other sounds around the player and not caption footsteps if there's something else covering it up
wouldn't be helpful to the people who need it
and the directional thing wouldn't provide too much of an advantage

I think for now I'll go with my own vibe, but if I actually do work for NW I will look for users hard of hearing and with visual impairments to get their input on certain design choices.
Slight changes made. Made it so the highlight (black background) matches the length of the text. Also added directional arrows. I have an idea to implement this into the damage compass later on, though. So for now, those arrows won't be present moving forward.

While we're on the topic of spectators, question about an idea that's been on my mind for a while: How would you guys feel about having more 'cinematic' deaths with your character's hearing and vision fading out for a few seconds before being sent to spectator, would it just get annoying after a while?
Spectator UI would be nice it would be really hard tho but there is like a lot of stuff you could do with it like

I think one is cola, one is armor and one is either corrosion or the traumatized effect
Armour should stay, but i don't think there's a need for a icon for cola or corrosion

So the 8 slots would be the full inventory, and those four larger squares would be hotkeys?
So the idea here is that when holding an item, you can scroll to interact with either similar items or the embedded inventory of an item like a bag of candy. I think the functionality could be practical and improve the pacing of human combat, but I'm not super happy with the look here (see pic). Another alternative idea I had would be to make it so you can press a hotkey to swap between the two halves of the full inventory instead, but I thought that would end up clunky. I'm more curious if you think I'm overthinking this look and maybe it isn't as inconsistent as I feel for whatever reason.
Or if you had any alternative designs in mind 
(also the icons are placeholders, I'm gonna give them a unique art style eventually)

Would the mouse wheel move your selection left/right or would it only be for "nested" sections like the candy bag or that flashbang/grenade thing

there's a few approaches to the functionality, it's something I'd like to see tested in-game to be completely sure. In my mind though, youd select a slot in the hotbar with a keybind and then you can scroll up and down to switch between the embedded items.
Also to be clear, the inventory wheel remains in this design. This would just be an added feature for those who want to utilize it.
UI stuff is a bit of a pain when you're doing art first development second I've found
technically this wouldn't even be possible until another refactor according to Terran because of how 330 works. But it's an avenue I like to explore because practicality is what makes it easier to stop thinking about the UI being there
there also just aren't many games with a hotbar like SCP:SL's, so it's particularly hard to find any reference material. i'm open to suggestions if anyone has ideas
just assign every inventory slot to a number key
there's a reason every fast paced shooter does it, cause it's insanely efficient
have the scroll feature work too, for those who don't want to memorize keys
that's what I plan for the defaults to be, but that doesn't solve the inconsistency problem
it could just be that i don't like the look of the icons right now
but suddenly tossing an inventory wheel onto a design primarily made up of rectangles would also look inconsistent

I have this idea for the HP bar to increase the urgency of low HP by making the current number turn from its regular medium size and white color to a more vibrant red at a larger size the lower your HP is
i'd have to test the sizing for SCP health pools tho
here it is at 50 for comparison

so it would be really obvious that you're insanely low on health
that might be a little too intrusive since the UI is still going to be combined with the damage compass
which will probably stick to the edge of the screen
fully depleted stamina, which will blink red before it starts to regenerate
health is important enough to be intrusive, a lot of games suffer from not conveying low health properly
Wouldn't just having its color flash slowly be enough?
might be for less critical health amounts (20-50) but once you're below that it should be very obvious that you're about to die

are you referring to how the crosshair changes based on attachments and such?
No, like how the crosshair becomes less percise the faster you're moving

I personally like how it simulates it being more difficult to precisely aim while sprinting full-speed
i think the dynamic crosshair fits the game thematically, but i prefer having a constant center visible
it's not really an element i have any say in
but i could totally enhance it in a few ways
for example hit ticks
i have some ideas for how to make it easier to get information out of them if you're paying close attention
without it straight up telling you that you've killed someone from far away for example

That kind of defeats the point. the dynamic crosshair is meant to be a disadvantage compared to the static one
while i agree it's not as impactful to gameplay as one might think it isn't really my call as a UI artist
I can offer solutions to problems I see that doesn't mean it's guaranteed
status icons and the hotbar scroll are a great example of this
not everyone is a fan of the status icons but they're a good proof of concept

but Mikel told me he's totally open to me reapplying if I can make more material to go off of, specifically mentioned spectator UI which I'm building off of the HUD
