About this-
My application was denied due to me not having enough work in my portfolio. I largely put art stuff aside while I worked with Hubert on concerns about some internal issues. Now that those are largely resolved I've returned doing more art stuff again, including UI. Unfortunately I am jobless at the moment so I cannot afford the software I used to use, but I'll be working on developing a stronger portfolio every now and then.

The game has 5 set layouts, all of which are pre modeled. Only random parts are the scp rooms and special rooms like gr-18 and, the armories, etc.

I combined two microchides, old and new + took some elements from Stanford's gun from Gravity Falls - quantum disintegrator
So far the resulting polygon is around 60k, quite a lot, but little can be removed
as I said after plasticity, the mesh is terrible

First, this render is very lovely. You did a great job @chrome briar , I'm also impressed by your speed making it.
- Love especially those parts in blue. Bevels and bolts are really nice.
- You got some nice lighting which brings a lot of details.
- The strong aspect of your artwork is the job you did on curved shapes. Plasticity looks very very cool to use, you really make me wish to learn it !
Now two negative aspects.
- Topology. In that case it doesn't really matters because it's rendered, some of your circles aren't fixed and it'll cause problems in realtime rendering in-game. Same for some other parts. Once again, not a problem in the case on a final render.
- About the design, I don't know how the weapon can be easily handled. You have two handles, so one hand on each, but how do you maintain it without having the cannon making it fall ? The weight seems heavily unbalanced.

funny misconception about models you don't really nead to mess with topology too much ( Look at garten of ban ban) you just need to not have it be so big
since it can impact performance
if you bake a model, from high poly to low poly, then there will be no problems with normals and shading, no matter how crooked the mesh is
I strongly disagree.
- First, a good topo is mostly important because it allows you to easily reuse some parts and save some tex space.
Here you have 4 different topos on identic pieces. You actually can't copy the tex without having some small issues on borders because topo is different and won't necessarely unwrap the same way, distortion will happen and/or create pinches. - Let's imagine you'll animate those parts, like pistons, moving or rotating. edges aren't equals so it can be noticed during an animation by clipping.
- On a teamwork aspect. topo can be extremely important when other people have to deal with it. In the industry, you won't always entirely do models, some people will texture it, render it, while you'll only model it.
- If you decide to subdivide, it fucks the edgeloops, so you can't get back if you make mistakes, while having a good topo always allow you to fix some issues later.
- Can be harder to deal with LODs later, not always but it can because you've already reduced some angles.
- Bad topo can cause pinches which can be a lot more visible with strong normals/reflections
- Triangulate once you export it to other engines isn't always a solution. Because softs triangulate differently from one to another. Meaning the triangles won't always be the same as the ones you got in substance for example, because you've exported ngons, and it can break some parts and cause issues on specific areas.
Messing with topo is possible, once you're at ease with, you can do that, but in some specifc situations. Like stuff being in the background, being blurred because of DOF.

Yes, ok, I didn’t animate the models and didn’t rig them, so I may not know the subtleties about the topology for animation, but regarding triangulation, I do it directly in the blender itself, preserving the normals, and don’t use complex ngon shapes, only flat ones forms.
While it doesn't matter a lot in the actual render because you don't notice it that much, it can be bad in front of sups during job interviews, because having a clean topo is also a synonym of working properly, for you and the rest of the team.

Here's what can be done with 256 polygons, and you're using 2k for a bullet.

You think that any game would require such detailed examination of each cartridge, especially if each bullet fired from a weapon would cost around 2k, and if a magazine with cartridges is more than 10k, it's definitely not game development.
the bullet should be no more than 200 polygons maximum
this is what the cartridge should look like, even with so many segments on the cylinder

I pureposefully made it that high detail because I was also sharing it in h3vr, so the detail was necessary

Hotdogs Horseshoes & Hand Grenades uses highly detailed cartridges for it's guns, all of them are highly detailed, so me making the 4 Bore specifically for H3VR isn't that big of a deal when it comes to the poly count.
I tbh wouldnt mind to see even 10k poly bullet, ppl make art to show it others not to put inside the game
I enjoy making game assets but H3VR handles high poly models really well, all of the cartridges are about the same detail as mine (with baked bevels ofc).

Usually you even use displacement maps with subdivs to get Tiny details. Your render is cool btw
Since H3 is a VR game the dev kind of expects people to have a good computer, so having high quality cartridges and firearms is the least of his concerns

It's kind of hard to explain but if a modder were to add it, the performance hit would be minimal, there's gun mods with over 200k poly's and they run like butter
Ive worked in VR events. Sometimes computers arent the Key. We ve tested some scenes with 6k setups to do perf tests. The fps were the same for a gamer classic setup

It isn't suprisingly, the game handles it by removing them after a set time, if you set it to infinite casings it becomes an issue after about 2 full mags from an M4
Its mostly about the distance and from your eyes (well like everygame but you really gotta opti everything you Can. That Said you can allow more polys for some viewmodels since VR games are often limited in their levels.
