in the tutorial one the section-cutscene is a bit jarring but theyre really good for understanding what makes the splatoon art unique

i feel you, i guess it's the curse of having a talent. When you know how to do something there is always someone that does it better. The best way to go about this is to not think of them as competition, but as examples to improve. Take me, I'm remaking the game assets on blender so i can use them to animate and i saw a guy that is already doing it. Am i a bit mad? Yes! But do i give up? No! I'm still working on these assets because I'm learning a ton about Blender and that skill will help me later. So insist in doing what you do! Is the project too complex? try something easier or shorter and, when you improve, you will want to go on. Hope this helps

that's a nice start, i suggest a couple of stuff
1 - i would make the scientist more surprised and bend him a bit more on the back
2 - if your rig allows you, pull the pistol slide back and, in general make sure you can feel the recoil of the gun, it's a pistol, so it's definitely there, but not exaggerated
3 - as i suggested before, play with the lights more, lights can communicate a lot. You can use them to communicate to the viewer where to look and to make the scene more interesting
