This has been a running problem since I was using windows 10 still, so it is not OS related.
Attempting to enter fullscreen with F11 or the fullscreen button causes the entire game to close up abruptly. Going into fullscreen works when just in the main menu but any attempt to enter a world causes the same crash. The game log closes along with the game so here is a crash dump I scrapped from the install directory. This doesn't effect modern versions of Minecraft (idk how modern, but doesn't happen in at least 1.12)

remove other java installations from Settings if the issue persist, then restart again
