Using this "-Dhttp.proxyHost=betacraft.uk" I get a red box in the main menu that says "Notice! Minecraft 1.6 is available for manual download. Please click here for more information". I can still play as normal but with a red box above the Singelplayer button.

because the game experiences internal crashes in certain situations when we don't set this on the proxy. also, that's what it has displayed since july 1 2013 until 2022 or so

I'm pretty sure the box is not red too. it should be white

tbh i've never seen it as red
