if it's made https, people with java older than couple updates back would be unable to use the launcher due to missing SSL certificates
why wouldnt they just use a more recent version of java?

as i said, it's a compatibility feature. it's not getting "fixed". if that bothers you so much, you can use v2 which can use https at all times, because it's not java.
