Lag spike every 2-3 seconds?

I was playing on singleplayer and running around 175~ fps. Every 2-3 seconds or so I get a pretty bad lagspike that makes the game very unenjoyable. I'm playing on beta 1.7.3 is there any way to fix this? TYIA

beta saves your player status to disk every 2 seconds. there is a mod made to improve that, it's called lagspikeofdeath

Optifine has it and you can change how long it take to save
