You can add mods that aren't on the Mod Repository similar to the way you used to do that all these years ago:
Step 1: Download your mod
Step 2: Open it using a program like 7-Zip or WinRAR
Step 3: Extract the contents of the file (there should be *.class files and some other stuff
Step 4: Open your .betacraft folder
Step 5: Go to the versions folder, create a copy of the Minecraft version the mod is supposed to work on
Step 6: Rename that copy to whatever you like, then open it with a program like 7-Zip or WinRAR
Step 7: Remember these *.class files you extracted earlier. Alongside other folders and files that came with them, put these files into the Minecraft version jar.
Step 8: In the Minecraft version jar, remove the META-INF folder.
Step 9: Open the Betacraft Launcher and there should be a new version of Minecraft titled the same way with a (custom) label after it, that's your modded version! Launching it, should run your mod.

I don't think you can use a modded version on a server

It's obvious it's about the server, as it's relatively easy to figure out how to install mods by yourself

I second that idea. Don't think it would take much from vanilla experience and it could add to some block variations for buildings

realized.

shears: tallgrass, shrubs, ferns
gold pick: ice, ores (diamond/coal/lapis/redstone), glowstone, stone, glass
gold shovel: grass, clay block, gravel (no flint), snow layer, snow block
gold axe: bookshelf
gold hoe: farmland
note that simply any golden tool won't do the job, if it's not meant for it. craft the correct type for the blocks you want to mine

additionally, snow layers are now stackable and will drop as many snowballs as there's layers
