here's my most recent autosave before it crashed to desktop 40 minutes later

here's the error log too, it mentions Path Goal Seek Ladder to Climb:Station Milling Flood at 91,108,93 about 15 minutes prior to the crash which i think is the same message from last time i got a CTD about two hours ago

EARLIEST_COMPATIBLE_NUMERIC_VERSION must be less than or equal to NUMERIC_VERSION! seems to happen on game load

After having tested your save, everything looks to be functioning and there's no hiccups or anything.

the only ~visible~ problems i have with W11 are that they've taken away/hidden a lot of diagnostic type things so i have to jump thru hoops to do things as microsoft have tried to babyproof the computer + i know what i'm doing

My game ran pretty good but I did have a few crashes, too (no clue what caused them and they were staggered between 3-6 hours of gameplay).

okay it looks like it may well be a case of a sound related memory leak, because so far so good

i'll report back if it happens again but @wooden prism maybe will help you too to disable sound in Steam\steamapps\common\Dwarf Fortress\prefs\init.txt

So you say dear op that it was probably sound related? I also have win 11 (because it's pretty...) and after 3 years I started getting random crashes without doing anything (10, 15, 20 minutes of game and pop).

I'm going to check it out later. On reddit other person with random crashes was fixing his saves by removing everything from save folder sans world file (didn't help me tho).

good news: with sound disabled in the init i played for 4 hours straight, it's almost definitely the cause for the semi-regular crashes

so whatever this error is, that's consistently in error logs from CTD, needs to be eaten

hmm, strange, I changed the init file and I also turned on FPS display in it (because why not) and it doesn't process. My DF plays with sound and with music and without FPS counter. I think I missed something silly that should be obvious.

hmm.. it appears that probably something between sound and an unit appearing on map caused crashes. I just got a forgotten beast, I guess it tried to spawn for a while. It was around the time I would expect it to crash.

Giving it a go now. Sound off in the ini before loading. Shouldn't take long i was plonking down saves over and over to get as close as possible to the crash.

i suspect its something to do with the entities coming onto the map and being saved as historical characters in the world

i had no idea at first, but its the autosave that tends to cause the problem when it gets to that save, but it effects all saves equally.
