I've read that they will equip bolts if you choose the "Archer" uniform. However, I've deleted that uniform so don't have that option. There is also no option to edit uniforms.

I've found that military dwarves will equip bolts if you have available quivers when you assign them a uniform with a crossbow.

Did you assign them the pre-made "Archer" uniform, or a custom-made uniform with a crossbow? In my experience, assigning a uniform with a crossbow will make them equip quivers, but not bolts.

I deleted the pre-made uniforms before I had a chance to try using them.

I tried assigning the Archer uniform and it didn't work (granted, I didn't have many quivers back then, and dwarves do not appear to re-evaluate their assigned equipment until the uniform is re-assigned). Then made a custom uniform that assigned a crossbow specifically, and had ample quivers, and they started picking up quivers and filling them properly.

I have done that, and they won't pick up bolts.

I am experiencing the same thing. My custom crossbow archer guys totally ignore my ammo stockpiles

It's a known issue. Hopefully will be fixed in the upcoming updates

I spent many hours troubleshooting my marksdwarves specifically that they just wouldnt take bolts, eventually after giving them their own barracks with a bolt stockpile within it, THEN recreating the squad, they picked up bolts and started training shooting

I just found this in #df-questions, didn't confirmed if it works though

Not working with default archer uniform . Not in my case. Also you cant equip in uniform the quivers . Should be a section with upper body uniform part i think.

The only way the bolts can be equipped is when a dwarf is doing a hunting job.

They auto equip quivers as long as the uniform is ranged type which is fair enough for me. Not being possible however to configure the ammo is a terrible limitation

Dwarves could use bolts with default archer uniform, but it randomly got broken and now they do not use bolts and they jumped out castle and ded 😦

Some says if you have over 1000 bolts in same material allows you to use them, but I didn't tested it yet.
