#A moment of peace

so what's the backstory here
The global plot: After the ODP (Brazilian equivalent of the illuminati) leaked that the Alaskan government was working on creating nuclear weapons (nuclear weapon research has a global ban that all countries have agreed to), Alaska was kicked out of the United Nations of Northern America and war was declared on them by the country they were already on the edge of it with, the FRR (Russia). The ODP sits back to watch as their chain reaction is set off, a plan that will lead within the next 10 years to global domination.
The personal plot: (From left to right) Sasha, Nikita, Trinket, and Ivan, sit together around a fire, on lands far from their home. Their stomachs knot with dread for battle, and worry for their mutual friend, a foreign exchange student named Mona, who was deported to her country mid-school year back when the war started. The ever looming fear that they may run into her on the battlefield fill the young souls with doom, as well as the suffocating knowledge that it is very likely not all of them will survive to go home.
Or if you wanted the backstory for why I tried a different style than usual, my husband told me he wanted me to try painting when we have the money/space for buying painting supplies. I said, "Why wait? I'll just swap what brushes I use for my digital art and avoid more pencil-oriented techniques."
damn, sounds like a crossover between fallout and s.t.a.l.k.e.r for some reason
which i like 👍
also i assume that Alaska has either seceeded from the United States, or the federal government collapsed (civil war or nuclear war), so the states are left on their own
I do love Fallout, and STALKER was one of my inspirations for Trinket
i havent played either but i hope to one day
Alaska seceeded shortly after WW2. The population is made up of people originally living on the west coast (Oregon, Washington, and California) who fled during the invasion (one of the major divergences in the timeline)
hold on I have a map of the UNNA
I do too. Once I finish the main set of books I want to write spinoffs that take place in Japan, Mexico, and Brazil
ah ok
countries that were also significant but were left behind by the main story
dont wanna get political but what's china like
....Good question.
I actually hadn't thought about China at all
I'm more concerned with whether Germany still exists or not--
haven't decided
I also need to map out what countries are independant, which ones fall under the Soviet Union, and which ones separated after the civil war that formed the FRR
interesting
since the soldiers havs AK rifles, i assume kalashnikov still existed
idk about the ar-15/M16 though. there might be two outcomes: eugene stoner still develops it and us military uses it like normal
or
the us still uses m14, but because no vietnam, they dont switch to it.
wait, does vietnam still happen
That I'm not sure about. It's tough trying to balance out fleshing out the world vs the personal stories.
Stalin's genocide (forgot what the event is formally called) occurs a bit later than irl but Grisha Morozov, one of the main characters, is instrumental in it
And it's due to a proper rebellion that while delayed by the event, still ends up causing a civil war that forms the FRR
so what type of gov is FRR?
That's another thing I'm working out, FRR is a new addition to the timeline.
ah ok
Primarily capitalistic but with free healthcare
free education
private options are available but not encouraged
so basically modern western european
More or less.
beginning is 1916 with the birth of Grisha Morozov
ending is 2040s (haven't decided an exact date) with Alaska being destroyed and Canada and Mexico going to war over who gets to claim the remaining land (FRR pulls out immediately due to interferance by ODP who have government agents planted in most of the major countries)
As much as I love fleshing out worldbuilding, my main focus is 100% the individuals and how they're living in it. That's what brings purpose and passion to a story imo, and it tends to be left to the wayside from my observations of the alternate history community
This is some cool lore!
Thank you!
here's my own headcanon:
-alaska still uses ww2 weapons, but also a bunch of smuggled arms. so you can imagine their troops carrying everything from m16s, AKs, FALs, even ww1 weapons like the m1903 springfield
-the united states still adopts the m16, but a little bit later since american involvement vietnam war does not happen, due to mexico's occpuation of the entire west coast and refusal to allow american troops to pass. and only because they realized that the AK is way better than the m14, and they already had a decent rifle to use.
Hmm I do like the idea of Alaska jumping straight to nuclear weapon development since they're so far behind on their normal weapon tech. However they're not the only country researching it, they're just the only one that got caught.
now that i think about it, i dont think alaska would be very industrialized
its economy is currently still mostly based on raw materials (in this timeline)
also its interesting to imagine Alaskan WW2 fighters dogfighting some other country's fighter jets
but then again
another one of my headcanons is that Alaska is secretly being aided by some countries
no one knows, but many suspect it includes Israel, despite it being a major ally of the US and being so far away from Alaska
idk it just seems fit
hmm,
idk if internet/digital revolution will happen
This is one I had actually mulled over
Internet is a thing but it's far more segregated by region with many ISPs blocking foreign websites. Digital revolution focused on usefulness rather than entertainment, though videogames and shows are still a thing there's far less of them and they're more primitively put together. However major cities like Petersburg have charging grids setup through every building that allow compatible tech to wirelessly charge just from you walking through the hallways.
Mona, the native Alaskan exchange student, will quickly encounter the problem of no electrical outlets to charge her older tech phone and it dies along with her translation app. Her attempt to communicate her need will fall on confused ears who neither understand her language nor wtf is going on with her weird phone. This will allow her to have an introduction scene with Sasha, a nerdy character and the roommate of the other main character, who figures out what her problem is and helps her get a wireless charging converter.
