HI UHM Does anyone have tips for learning how to draw mouths?

Ive been on a mission to push my limits art-wise (more poses, more types of hair, more people in one drawing, maybe later this year i’ll start brushing up my animal skills) this year, and so far Mouths have given me the most trouble.

It’s weirdly difficult to find a reference that mingles well with my art style

When I draw dramatic open mouth stuff I usually do the teeth first, like this

And then all the actual lip stuff after

I do this specifically to stop myself from making animals with mouths that can’t close because the teeth go too far back into the mouth near the jaw hinge lol

most features are really simple and dont show that much detail with teeth

I specifically do a lot of sharp teeth art (you can scroll up I did a lot recently lmao) but this works with like any kind of teeth

Works for people, works for animals, can be used for any expression, whatever your heart desires

he's a funny little jerk. he can totally do the cook's job way better but that's not the station he's in charge of right now so he's not treating whatever happens in that kitchen as his business.

I like to think Jay's mean, unwelcoming and crazy appearance is just a weird persona of his that he has the habit of keeping up.
He's used to making enemies more than making friends as his method of social interaction, though he's finally managing to become friends with Sticks, who isn't at all rude like him.

Jay wouldn't stand people like himself or anyone who would find his annoying and mean behaviour appealing anyways.

He often flip-flops between acting like a feral, knife wielding dumpster animal to acting like a sophisticated person with talent, even dressing sharply randomly on casual days.

the reason why is because he weirdly thinks the concept of manners is funny as hell.

his weapon of choice is throwing knives he's more fine with showing off his knife skills innthe form of combat, but he hides his talent as a cook from people just because he doesn't think they're worthy enough to witness him do helpful things he could be applauded for.

He wishes for people to look at him as if he's an awful contractor of several deadly diseases or some sort of lame villian wannabe who is just a public nuisance at worst, he loves the sound of being heckled.

I’m super late to this but i am of the philosophy that if you feel it needs its own layer put it on one. You can always combine them but it’s hard to split them
But! Eel layers usually look like:

• A layer with reference stuff pasted onto it
• 1-4 sketch layers (usually a rough layout with silhouettes or colorblocking, a less messy base, and then a very refined sketch.)
• Linework, sometimes I split it by character or by clothing if I plan to color it
• Shading/texturing layers. These sometimes go on top of the linework too
• Coloring layers, usually also split into what’s being colored (separate layers for skin, hair, every article of clothing, props). Sometimes I shade onto these directly.
• Things for the background
• The background color. SAI/Procreate have this function isolated from a layer so usually this isn’t its own “layer” per se
