if I disconnect the the leds from the pyportal, it will start working as normal.

so not sure why having these LEDS connected would prevent the pyportal from booting up normally.

your LED ground and power wires are swapped in the pyportal JST connector

the jst connectors came from amazon, so I assumed they had the correct wiring orientation since I always assumed red = 5v and black = ground
