I understand that

#

IIRC you have one of the fancy wacoms with a built-in display, right?

hasty wedge
#

Yes

This laptop have a wacom display

#

I can draw on my screen

wooden schooner
#

oh, it's a laptop with the wacom as its primary and only display?

hasty wedge
#

Yes

wooden schooner

cool

I think I bifurcated hard from that "touchscreen mania" industry push, what was it now 10+ years ago

Does it have a textured screen?

You can always add your own film to the display

Thats good to hear

Nah, it was from Infocom. 1986. The peeps that produced LSL were Sierra (Ken & Roberta Williams) which were acquired in '96, then swept up in a bunch of mergers and ended up in the Activision portfolio, and they rereleased some of the games in 2014 and onwards.

CONFIRMED, the motherboard still has some life left in it, despite it being this close to death.

#

I have decided: I'm doing my first PC to Server conversion with it and all my extra HDD's.

#

this should be interesting. If there's a bad capacitor, then I have a hunch that if I can wire up the machine in such a way that I can harvest the excess buildup responsible for the surge protection kicking in, then I could, in theory, keep this thing going for another few years.

#

Question is, how would I do it and where would I funnel all that power to?

#

i might be overthinking this.

my head is overheating and bustling with thoughts and ideas

honest moth
real falcon
#

expecially id cheapened too much 😄

honest moth
#

but one blown capacitor ruining the bunch will not stop me.

#

...except for my old HP tower, that thing is about to blow and I have no intention on rebuilding it.

real falcon
#

it being 2013 probably means you could find caompitable caps and just swap em 🙂

honest moth
#

...but finding the busted one is tricky

#

sometimes they die without blowing their tops or bottoms.

real falcon
#

if accordable, would swap em all

#

rest may be turning

honest moth
#

but desoldering all of them?

#

with a traditional soldering iron?

#

is that even possible with industrial-grade solder and components?

#

my iron only goes to a certain temperature, and there is no flippin' way I'm taking a heat gun to the board.

#

I think i'll wait for the first to pop and give off the smell I need to find it, THEN I'll replace it, with a lot of patience.

#

...wait a minute

#

Is the thing receiving too much power and not enough places to put it?

#

...

#

i probably should've checked that first. OK, I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING FOR THE TIME BEING. peace

The first tamagotchis didn't have reset buttons

raw jasper
#

Oh really?

fading hare

Got them for Christmas from someone in the family. Sister loved hers, kept it alive for years. I decided to try to kill mine. Took a few minutes of constant medical shots and corporeal punishment, and it was dead. Irrecoverably so.

raw jasper

It is possible!

fading hare

first gen in Sweden of the tamagotchi was just like a real pet. If it died, it was dead.

#

I was assuming I could start over or reset it with you know a pencil or whatever, but... nope

#

it became a very morbid keychain instead

raw jasper
#

Did you know they use an 6502 core?

slim shard
#

And then, get this, Deity said, "have you tried resetting him with pencil?"

ooh, I'm a sucker for 6502 implementations

fading hare
#

some of the other ones had the little bendy plastic tab that you could push on and it actuated a little button and reset the thing

raw jasper
fading hare

hmm, maybe there was and I just ddin't figure that out because I threw the manual away

hahaha

#

how hard could it be, right?

raw jasper
#

Wiki says A and C

#

Whatever that means

fading hare
#

no way to google that in the winter of 1997

#

wait... this couldn't have been a tamagotchi then

You got the very first one

fading hare

fading hare
#

yeah, that was the one

#

I am old, and my memory is a bit fuzzy on the year this took place.

raw jasper
#

Mad props to her patience

fading hare
#

So I must have killed it because some well-meaning relative thought we'd like them.

#

Just to see what would happen, assuming I could just reset it. But, I didn't know there was a button combination.

#

Because, manuals, who needs them!

#

I obviously did, but shh.

raw jasper
#

I seem to remember opening mine up to remove the speaker wires because I found the beeping incessant?

fading hare
#

I remember that

#

but I never gutted it... I just used it as a keychain... when people would ask me what it was, I'd just say "it's my dead cat"

#

or dog, or whatever pet I had

raw jasper
#

I now had a mental image of a future where mental scans of deceased pets would be a thing, and people would store them in tamagotchi like keychains

#

Sounds very unpleasant, especially for the consciousness in question

fading hare
#

yeah, because I want to clean up after a dog for eternity... 😄

#

yeah, it definitely has a Black Mirror feel to it

raw jasper
#

Well I for one sure wouldn’t want to have my consciousness trapped in a tamagotchi contraption for eternity

Well. It has like several hundred different pentesting tools preinstalled, something that you'd not find in the standard Debian or Ubuntu software repos. But, yeah, it's essentially Debian, which is essentially Linux, which is essentially one Finnish guy's interpretation of UNIX. What's your point?

fading hare

#

Funny story. One of my former coworkers (an awesome full-stack dev) was on tour with his indie band (they got big for a while back in the mid 2000s) in Finland. They walk into some local bar in some podunk town in Finland, after being frisked and disarmed (Finnish people all have knives, and they all drink like Russians), he's ready to after-party like a Finn. Walks up to the bar and orders beers and shots for the band... Looks over, and there, in this random Finnish bar, sits Linus Torvalds, sipping a pint of beer. Real story. My former coworker obviously fan-girled pretty hard, and kicked off a conversation with Linus about everything under the sun. They spoke for quite a while about the count of curse words in the Linux kernel, and how Linus will never stop making fun of people committing dumb stuff to the kernel.

#

Linus is a beast. I would have thrown my hands up a long time ago in frustration and indignation. The Linux kernel gets so many PRs from state actors all over the globe that it's extremely hard to evaluate all of them. You know that's how the CIA and others ended up submitting patches that enabled back doors in the kernel.

Sure, most of the PRs aren't malicious, they're just committed by dumb people that fail to realize what they're doing, because they are used to cutting corners. Linus will publicly shame these people, which I think is the right approach. You want to commit code to the most used kernel on the planet? Better not be a dingus.

#

Have you ever wrapped every Null Pointer Exception in your application source in a noop try/catch? You are what's wrong with this world, and I'd like to help you become a better human being.

I've been avoiding buying denim because the first N washes are a headache-inducing affair

#

They need a wash for themselves!

lusty fossil
#

Lol

#

Yup

fading hare
#

How is this news?

wooden schooner
#

I might never go back to jeans. Once I discovered the possibility of wearing pants that have hip mobility, it was life-changing

fading hare
#

I always wash EVERYTHING I buy separately before I wear them, or wash them with anything else.

lusty fossil
#

I haven't bought anything with as much dye as super dark denim in a loooong time.

#

But I now have a blue towel that I didn't have before

raw jasper
#

You are probably right in doing that, but I haven't had any color bleeding issues in years, so that's that.

raw jasper
fading hare
#

The best pants of all time are the 5.11 Defender-Flex. You gotta watch out for sales and clearances, though, because their regular price is hard to swallow at $75. I once bought half a bin of these pants at a local 5.11 store at $12/pair. They looked at me funny at first, then they were like, yeah, I would have done the same thing if I had the opportunity to do so.

#

it's basically all I wear

raw jasper
fading hare
#

it is

#

they make clothes for law enforcement and military

#

but, these pants are tanks... I'm tellin' ya

lusty fossil
#

I had some wrangler ranch jeans that were real tough but my waistline expanded

fading hare
#

I always wear knives, and these pants have excellent protection on all pockets for wear and tear from knife clips

lusty fossil
#

They were tight to begin with

fading hare
#

and, they are stretchy

#

even if you're a chunky boy, the Defender-Flex Slim will make you look like Adonis himself blessed you

wooden schooner
fading hare
#

And, for the reference, I am not skinny.

wooden schooner
wooden schooner
#

I'll certainly have a wardrobe ready for me once that happens

fading hare
#

I used to be like 115 soaking wet... now... 210.

#

and none of that is muscle 😄

umbral phoenix
#

I haven't been anywhere near 100 since... grade school? but then I'm tall

fading hare
#

My bone structure is very thin, and most of my weight is gathered around my abdomen and thighs, although of late it's been spreading out a bit, which makes me look less like I am hiding a basketball under my shirt.

umbral phoenix
#

I'm a couple over that. I wonder if I still have measurements from school years somewhere

fading hare
#

So anyway. We all have different concepts of what chunky means. All I was saying was that it doesn't matter what size you are, these pants will still make you look good.

#

Hopefully I haven't insulted anyone.

umbral phoenix
#

It seems (men's) pants have fairly recently started adding a stretchy component. I love wearing jeans, find them comfortable, even the pure cotton ones. But the newer ones that stretch just a little are nice.

fading hare
#

Indeed. It's like women finding clothes with pockets and getting super excited. I find a pair of pants with just a little bit of stretch and I am all kinds of happy.

umbral phoenix
#

pockets, what would I do without pockets?

fading hare
#

Ask every woman that has lived on this planet since time immemorial.

umbral phoenix
#

no-pockets must be a conspiracy by the purse manufacturers 😉

fading hare
#

You get a really big freakin' purse.

wooden schooner
umbral phoenix
#

I actually hate having anything in my pockets, but it's a necessaity sometimes

fading hare
fading hare
lusty fossil
#

If it doesn't have a strap to go over your shoulder, what even is the point?

lusty fossil
#

Pocketbooks have always seemed like they were designed by someone who wanted to hurt women sneakily

fading hare
#

Well, if paired with a wrist strap, they are super useful when out and about in a dress that... you know... looks good, but doesn't have any options for storage.

raw jasper
#

I'd like to see a study on the impact of pocketbook use / lack of pockets on the joint health of women

lusty fossil
#

Like Crawley in Good Omens causing small amounts of chaos in thousands of lives to spread evil

raw jasper
#

I am pretty sure there would be some effect 😐

lusty fossil
#

I think heels probably are a bigger offender where joints are concerned

wooden schooner
#

anything that bears weight and goes over one shoulder seems pretty bad

raw jasper
#

Heels are evil too

wooden schooner
#

backpack with waist strap may be a fashion crime but I think it deserves some amnesty for its shoulder relief

umbral phoenix
#

the style with backpacks used to be over one shoulder only, pretty bad

lusty fossil
#

I wore a bum bag for...12, 13 years to carry needed medication in it.

#

My mommy sewed it for me

#

I was popular

fading hare
#

I am not trying to get too political here, but society has valued women less than basically anyone else. That's why they don't get pockets.

lusty fossil
#

That's not really that political

#

IMO

real falcon
#

look at clothes design. usually, its designed so women needs someone else to clothe them

fading hare
#

And carry all their stuff. Or, to make sure they can't carry anything.

lusty fossil
#

I'm gonna be so sad when my drifting off to sleep is no longer accompanied by my dog's extreme snoring

fading hare
#

The irony is that we used to have matriarchal societies but dudes were so insecure that they couldn't stand this...

lusty fossil
#

I hated it at first but now it's part of what I use to know I'm home

#

TT

fading hare
#

If I offended anyone tonight, please ping me. I am always trying to be a better human being, even though I am old, bitter, and cantankerous.

lusty fossil
#

Lol

fading hare
#

You know what's cuter than a dog snoring? A cat snoring.

#

They are so precious.

raw jasper
#

Cats are nice

fading hare
#

Moments of pure innocence from a predator born to hunt and kill.

raw jasper
#

*self-domesticated predator

fading hare
#

haha, indeed

#

they prefer to work smart, not hard

raw jasper
#

Of course, cats would be too proud to get domesticated 😄

fading hare
#

The only thing that tops cat sneezes is weasel sneezes

raw jasper
#

I've heard a cat sneeze, but a weasel?

fading hare
#

holy moly

wooden schooner
#

I am a fan of those little piggies, the breed that can be house pets

fading hare
#

oh, I meant ferret

#

sorry

raw jasper
#

Weasels can be house pets...?

fading hare
#

lost in translation

lusty fossil
#

There's no such thing as a micro pig

wooden schooner
fading hare
#

I'm a micro pig, and I take offense to that.

lusty fossil
#

They don't exist! They all get big

wooden schooner
#

wow that is some serious information

#

any source I should look at?

fading hare
#

😄

lusty fossil
#

If they don't get big, you're not feeding them enough

#

Yeah let me find one

wooden schooner
#

ugh that sounds horrible sigh thank you for informing me

#

I was not going to get one because being hard to take care of is enough to scare me away, but definitely want to know

raw jasper
#

Indeed it sounds /very/ horrible

#

Like those dog "breeds" (whatever that means) that are essentially born to suffer

lusty fossil
#

Sigh, National Geographic, I do NOT trust you with my email and will elect to not read your article rather than give it to you

fading hare
#

sigh

#

I am just sad about animals being bred and controlled by humans for no other reason than displays of power and virility

lusty fossil
#

I'm trying to find something that isn't PETA, because they are straight trash when it comes to animal welfare. They are the Susan G Komen of animal rights

raw jasper
#

Did you know that pig hearts grow throughout the animal's lifetime?

lusty fossil
#

I want micro pigs to exist, but it would probably take centuries of breeding to make it happen

#

My mom is a scientist and had a study on pigs when I was young. So I had a "pet" pig that I fed apples and named Doorknob. I didn't get the difference between normal and proper nouns.

fading hare
wooden schooner
#

based on the description in that article of "micropigs," I was not thinking of that

fading hare
#

(basically a family of lawyers suing everyone for no reason)

wooden schooner
#

knee height, which the article says is not micro, definitely counts as small enough to me

raw jasper
#

Who/What is "Susan G. Komen"?

wooden schooner
#

them being a herd animal makes total sense thx. I think I have generally seen them with at least one other pig, fortunately. Not sure if that's enough

fading hare
#

she basically diverted a very large percentage of donations to upper echelon salaries

lusty fossil
#

I don't think kune kune pigs are small in the mass sense, tho. They are dense

raw jasper
#

I see!

lusty fossil
#

I just try to spread the word about micro pigs whenever I get the chance, hopefully prevent someone from buying one if I can.

fading hare
#

I don't even know if she's still there... but, yeah... that whole debacle got them a really, really, really bad Guidestar rating.

lusty fossil
#

Also another article says kune kune are 100-400 lbs. A 100 lb dog is decidedly a large dog

fading hare
#

A 100 lbs pig is just a snack.

lusty fossil
#

A 400 lb dog is 3 great Danes in a giant trench coat

raw jasper
#

Max 181kg?!

#

Golly...

#

(Yeah, I had to do the conversion, my mind is not trained to think in lbs 😄 )

lusty fossil
#

Lol

wooden schooner
#

ah yeah, those compact tungsten pigs

fading hare
#

Also, if you don't know about Guidestar, I highly suggest you use it before you donate to any non-profit organization.
