considering upgrading the server to X5680

Server has 12 out of 18 with NT4GC72B4NA1NL-BE. Getting more for that and other builds would end up being $107 with the X5680. Probably best if I wait to see if it is needed.

Yeah, bit of a gap in the price between the X5670 and X5680.

Y'all are running some cool computers with classic hardware. Meanwhile I'm here with my "workstation"

#

It doesn't have any RGB. The big boy, on the other side of my desk, lights up like a Christmas tree though (if I want it to). It's a bit heftier with water cooled newest gen Ryzen 7, and a water cooled RX 5700 XT. I never got a chance to get an 30xx Nvidia card for it before the couf happened and crypto mining took off.

According to the manual (https://fccid.io/2AKBPESP8266-S3/User-Manual/User-Manual-3594791.pdf), it is intended to be used as an SMD module. From the TUYA modules this guy comes in, it slots into a PCB vertically and gets soldered in upright...

I don't see any standard card edge connectors for that board thickness, so your best bet for prototyping is to solder some wires to the pads and hope for the best?

Sometimes heavy gardening/welding gloves are useful for handling cats that are objecting. Another approach is rolling them up in a towel to make a kitty burrito. While some people advise scruffing them, that's a technique it's best to learn first, and doesn't work on all cats. Sometimes there just aren't any options, in a couple of rescue situations, I just accepted the injuries in order to avoid stressing the cats further.

It's a race between covid variants and my obesity for my death for me

dusty citrus

I mean, I blocked most media because of the "science" facts they keep making up without citing sources (when delta came out for instance they said the vaccines didn't work while nothing in nature about it supported any of these statements). But I'm always worried the vaccine didn't work for me or something and I try to exercise but like I said my weight really put a limit on it

#

specific ex: I can't do biking for more than 15 mins in the gym, if I actually bicycle at lower effort I won't last past 30 minutes

#

like my legs have burning pain or feel numb so it's not a "mental will" thing

lusty fossil
wanton thistle

Obese person here too: I do exercise daily, but I still wear a mask at the gym. Most people dont. I liked not being sick as well. I did worry about Covid and still do. We sort of have a mask policy at work, luckily they seem to be OK with WFH. Im the only one whos good about it though :/

Also I know it sounds counter-inuitivie that Im obese and excercise but its the truth. Ive been on 1600 Cal "life style" before and lost a good amount but as soon as I started doing weights, I platued. Started hiking due to the pandemic-same thing. 5+mile hikes? Sure I can bur upwards of 2k calories but it didnt make a dent. SO I just try to take care of myself and eat healthy 🤷

wanton thistle
dusty citrus

Yeah I hit my wrist doing VR a few months ago and I still can't write with my right hand, the protective tissue around my tendon get inflamed and going to the physio made it worse

wanton thistle

lusty fossil
#

I didn't mean to be correcting you, meant as an addition

dusty citrus

well on polulu shop they mention two models, and add OLED in the name of the robot but I didn't know that amazon.ca only sells one of the version

#

and it's also going to cost around 20 US$ if I return it because of the insane postage

#

I'll try this: "Hi, I am a bit disappointed that I got the old LCD version and not the relatively recent OLED version that can do graphics. Do you have the OLED version at all? Would it be possible to return/exchange it for the OLED version? (If you don't stock it I guess I'll live with the 1940 LCD technology 😦 )."

#

They don't seem to sell the oled version at all on their site

#

1968 apparently not 1940 but my point still stand

#

I like gym more than before though, not too worried about covid there (can't exercise with a mask on anyway, completely cut breath away)

#

I feel like it's a relatively safe break from wearing masks in public but I like it

tardy badger

One thing about working out and fat burn, the core is the highest density/highest fat burning muscle in our body. Part of that is because of how active it is in our posture.

Legs are great, but working on your core is one of the most important muscle groups to focus on.

Plus with the right workout, you can do core every day which is another bonus

My wife had struggled a lot with weight loss. She put on hormone weight after going on birth control after our daughter was born. It’s been very stubborn.

And she asked her Dr about it and apparently hormone weight gain is really hard to lose

dusty citrus
#

yeah for me it's the sugar, instantly inflate weight and then it goes back to normal after a while

#

but it's also the hardest thing for me and sometimes I really actually need sugar to function/concentrate

wanton thistle
dusty citrus
#

Doesn't mean to completely avoid it, but to have a little bit every day. Lost 6 pounds in august when I had to lose weight quickly because of the vaccine triggering an osteoarthritis crisis

wanton thistle
#

you can do it 🙂

dusty citrus
#

And what I ate daily was a pita bread for a restaurant and a creme brulée (dessert with torched top) and a salad everyday for a week and lost 10 pounds that way

Sugar added applesauce is something I'll never understand.

wanton thistle
lusty fossil

It goes back to the industrial revolution and colonialism. Britain started importing sugar to boost the calories of the bread eaten by the working class

Importing = using slave or near slave labor to steal

wanton thistle
stray wind
dusty citrus

my biggest sugar sins are ice cream/caramel/maple and chips

wanton thistle
stray wind
dusty citrus
#

and the thing I know I won't be able to resist all christmas is a delicious ice cream log with caramel on top, tiny banana cake in the middle and a big layer of liquid maple syrup between the two

#

so that's why I want to get to 310-315 so I won't hate myself for eating it

wanton thistle
#

you and me both

dusty citrus
#

ie: give me some weight space

wanton thistle
dusty citrus
#

this is a trick that has worked well for me, thinking about what I have to give up to eat a treat

wanton thistle
#

Thats the basis of CICO

dusty citrus
#

and prevented me from doing the easy way out of hunger

wanton thistle
#

Dont have carbs for lunch and you can have dessert after dinner basically

dusty citrus
#

and taking a frozen bag of fruits for instance instead of a haagan daaz ice cream

#

during weekends it's different though and like every 2 weeks I'll fast for almost all the day involuntarily and then can afford a bag of chips because I haven't eaten anything

wanton thistle
#

That works. Thats IF basically

dusty citrus
#

and when I order at restaurants it will often be sushi or a bowl of poke chicken with tons of vegetables and quinoa

wanton thistle
#

I do the same thing when I hike. Have a full breakfast (oatmeal) then after I burn 1500 calories or w/e, I can come have a beer, then have a large dinner (Like fish Fajita's) and then ice cream

#

I live for those summer days

dusty citrus
#

I think the hardest thing about losing weight is figuring how to handle your weaknesses in food and building up tricks and slowly lowering your ravenous hunger

wanton thistle
#

yes

#

I am currently sick (hopefully not covid) and have been fighting with the hunger all day. Its not bordem. Its legit hunger

dusty citrus
#

one of my friend is sugar based instead of fat based so we often clash, fat make him take on a lot of weight and sweet stuff work better for him

wanton thistle
#

Hmmm thats interesting

#

I cant do Keto. My galbladder will hate me.

dusty citrus
#

for me it's the reverse and I'm trying to have the keto/creteon diet ideal (while respecting the 90g of carbs each day minimum from my doctor)

#

so i'm trying to remind myself that binging on nuts is much better than binding on ice cream even if I'll get fatter in both cases

stray wind
#

Hah I struggle with that notion too.

wanton thistle
#

yes. Thats good

#

Oh, language filter. Apologies.

dusty citrus
#

and that despite the technical issues (like they don't make winter coats my size or shirts) it,s much better to be a 320 pounds guy and not losing weight lifting weights on a cretean diet than doing ice cream/chips that is inactive

#

I'll probably freeze to death this winter because of my weight 😦

wanton thistle
#

I had a nurse say to me how fruit is high in sugar and how I should be careful with my intake. Well then I guess I wont eat fruit then! lol

I've had good luck with high-protein, low-calorie diets. The protein helps with the inevitable hunger from maintaining a calorie deficit.

wanton thistle
dusty citrus
#

fiber works better than protein for me, but some reason boiled eggs in the shell really cut off my hunger

#

except I hate eating them

#

I'd need to find a sauce of some sort that doesn't have much calories/salt to make it more palatable

#

I remember going to my doctor during the evening once and when she asked me what I ate today I said 2 boiled eggs and a coffee

#

And she was like dude, that's like 500 calories you can't do that it's detrimental to your health etc

Buy stewed tomatoes without salt. They do have salt-less canned tomatoes. Just gotta look

Or DIY it and become Italian.

#

I do low sodium stuff too, since again, everything has SO Much salt in it

#

And its so weird when you go over peoples houses and find they put salt in stuff, or you eat out and go "this is salty"

My tomatoes are the best, they only have the natural MSG sodium from the natural tomato (ie: tomato naturally contain MSG)

#

So you're making enough for the whole channel, right?

dusty citrus

eh that's one of the problem with it, the bags are for 2 servings

#

so sometimes for the 900-1200 cals per serving one I lose them because I can't make it on some day and respect my calories budget (which is also why it's weekly based)

#

also I found that making a Rosti is a great way to lose weight if your heart doesn't give out first or you don't fall into exhaustion coma first 🤣

#

I made rusti once and it took like 2 hours of hard-core grating of root vegetables...

#

My favorite brand of ramen changed recipe too, only one I liked

#

So I'm done with them forever

#

Can't find any grated lime peel anywhere so I can't even make something remotly similar 😄 (that is what they mostly removed in their new recipe)

Sometimes I really don't want to cook and that's when it's more difficult or when I don't have time (like breakfast/lunch break)

I like his videos, him and some old-school guy that is into much more voltage stuff are the 2 main ones that I watch

wanton thistle
#

He did a really good video on the op-amp voltage regulator

dusty citrus
#

2nd guy is old school though and prefer big old measuring HP/teknika consoles from ebay with their 500W power supply intruments rather than cheap chinese stuff

#

so I don't think he does arduino rated stuff

#

he made his own power supply as well with 5/12V logic voltage and 12/48/60V/120V power

wanton thistle
#

whos the other one you watch?

#

Im always down for more YT stuff

dusty citrus

The other one is French language. Do you understand french?

wanton thistle
#

no lol

but YT makes subtitles

dusty citrus
#

I'll link it anyway : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvv3bLR4Ws1GVycHG-t3dJw . Guy does ham radios and electronics as an hobby and work profesionally to make studio speakers

#

it seems really good but it's for higher voltages andfthe guy is big on (maybe too big) safety (fluke and nothing else for multimeter, buy CSA/UL power supplies from the US or Canada, etc)

#

it has 500+ tuts/demo/explaining things videos

#

and he started the fablab in my country

#

and he prefers PIC to arduinos/similar

late fulcrum
#

I used to use PIC but punted them for AVR long ago

dusty citrus
#

in one of the video he takes a vintage pre ww2 radio and show to replace resistors and capacitors, why they are an issue etc

#

I like these sort of things because of the free experience you get and stuff you'd never think of

#

Like he says the capacitor in that time were made from paper and exp^lain them why they have to be changed the fact they don't have polarity like modern ones etc

late fulcrum
#

I amused myself during the pandemic by restoring a pile of old broken equipment like that.

dusty citrus
#

there's off video work like measuring all capacitors and resistors with his fluke etc

#

but that's something that interest me when I'm more advanced. Being able to fix electronics in appliances so I don't have to pay someone

late fulcrum
#

This one wasn't quite working right at that point, but the distorted text has a charm of its own

#

Being able to repair appliances is a very useful skill

dusty citrus
#

I'd like to restore a ww2 military radio one day or a early cold war one as stuff get declassified

late fulcrum
#

That sounds like a great project

dusty citrus
#

like figuring out how the KGB Faika cryptology machine works etc

#

One of the problem with it is finding compatible paper and they were mostly destroyed to prevent falling into enemy hands so often they don't have key papers

#

it's not even cracked in all configurations but that type of machine is obsolete so russia declassified it in 2019

late fulcrum
#

Heh, I'm trying to solve a much simpler problem: I found a little disc player that plays plastic discs with holes in them. I need to calculate the hole patterns to play custom tunes so I can laser cut new discs for it.

dusty citrus
#

that one or another one don't remember which one it was exactly that I read about

#

When it was used warsaw countries weren't allowed to use their own key papers

late fulcrum
#

Sort of like this music box but round

dusty citrus
#

they would be sent a pack for their country and a separate pack to communicate between them

#

that was so usrr could read it if needed

#

each day they had to use a different key paper

#
  • they would have a stack of configuration paper to swap the rolls like enigma every week
#

if contact was lost with russia they could keep using them but key paper had to be swapped each day (the machine also had a switch to use a simpler scheme for lower security communications or if contact was lost for more than a year or a key paper stolen by the enemy)

#

isn't that like a mechanical thing or it uses hole as a sort of analog voltage like vintage discs ?

late fulcrum
#

Yeah, wholly mechanical.

wooden schooner
dusty citrus
#

He's showing this shematic from the vintage radio and saying he'll add a fuse to the circuit at the lower-right part and a ground with a 3-prongs power cable because there's no way he will run something with 1930 safety standards today

#

and that basically if a capacitor open a circuit the user will get a shock throught the chassis of the radio

#

and the speakers terminals are unsafe as well (220V directly)

#

and they used the legs of the capacitor to mount the power cord internally 😄

#

so the capacitors are free to leak on it

#

and it's UL and US Electrical Engineers certified

#

to be safe he uses a variac to slowly provide 120V over several hours and monitoring the entry amps and exit voltages to test the 75yo transformer

#

ie: starts a 5V, leave it for an hour, add another 5V etc until you are at 120V

late fulcrum
#

Safely bringing up old equipment is quite a procedure.

fading hare
#

<sarcasm> So it's not like in the movies? Like, where the protagonist finds an old, mothballed car in a garage and just jumps in and drives away? Or where someone finds a radio in an old WW2 bunker, turns it on, and just gets help? </sarcasm>

dusty citrus
#

well the resistors in this case were sometimes 10x their original rating

#

and some were broken, some paper capacitors had leaked

#

but he kept the mica resistors

late fulcrum
#

No, not like in the movies

#

However, this mica capacitor from 1928 is still good

dusty citrus
#

he's going slow on powering the whole thing, checking for smoke, checking for temperature etc

#

2 multimeter plugged in (one with a round thing around the wire instead of a clip)

late fulcrum
#

Yup, that's how it's done if you don't want to risk damaging some parts that would be very difficult to replace and may cause further damage.

dusty citrus
#

The internal voltage get as high as 2-3x the original voltage thought

#

like he fed 120V to the transformer and the output voltage was past his fluke 600V limit

late fulcrum
#

That can be a problem with bringing it up: if the tube heaters aren't powered enough for good emission, the power supply voltage can rise very high as it isn't being loaded.

#

There can also be some very high intentional voltages in some equipment.

dusty citrus
#

he wanted to see if he had to replace the transformer/give up on his project while isolating it from load

#

2nd step was plugging a rectifier load

#

then this video is the initial test with every tubes

late fulcrum
#

Some of these things are crammed full of tubes too

dusty citrus
#

there was a bias cell in there reactivated with distilled water for filtering(?)

#

like bias cell are a kind of battery that don't provide current but provide voltage

#

not sure how that's possible but it was common in 1930

late fulcrum
#

Yeah, tube grids are high impedance and are normally biased a few volts negative. A separate power supply to do so is complicated and expensive, and sometimes there isn't B+ voltage to spare for "cathode bias", so a small low current cell or battery supplies the needed voltage. I've seen some creative replacements for these things, one had an LED shining on a solar cell (hardly vintage, but it worked).

dusty citrus
#

the voltage are crazy too

#

when I see that I'm always worried that the capacitor have fatal charge from 1980 on them stored

late fulcrum
#

It's always a good idea to make sure. This old Heathkit had a pair of 1600V oil filled capacitors that were leaking oil. I eventually found some suitable film capacitors to replace them (the large white ones). And I was quite careful to avoid any stray voltage while doing so.

#

Alas, I managed to destroy a nice AdaFruit board with that one, it could leave a couple of hundred volts on an internal capacitor and hook it to an input if you turned a particular switch. sparky

dusty citrus
#

yeah I read up on how current can destroy electronics recently

and how adapter uses magnetic field to change dc into ac (or the reverse(?))

late fulcrum

As long as your orbit is across the magnetic field lines instead of along them, yeah, you can generate power that way.

late fulcrum

There were a few issues. Some transistors had failed, one in the vertical deflection circuitry, and another couple in the high voltage power supply. Some switch contacts needed cleaning and adjustment, but the big one was the base had come off of the CRT. I ended up extending the leads, making up some base cement, threading the leads through the pins, soldering them, then baking the whole thing to cure the cement.

I found Serge Melnyk's lessons (https://www.melnyks.com/) to be excellent. I did lessons 25 through 120 or so.

For a systematic sequence of grammar, I got good mileage out of Chinese Made Easier (books 1-3; didn't continue beyond that) by Martin Symonds et al.

I didn't use these books, but if you are a big language nerd and want all the sociolinguistic subtleties, Cornelius Kubler's Basic Spoken Chinese and Intermediate Spoken Chinese are freaking gold. Also, I appreciate his thesis that, for someone with no previous background in Chinese characters, it makes sense to separate the speaking/listening curriculum from the reading/writing curriculum, as speaking and listening will naturally progress much faster than reading and writing.

Learning Chinese Through Stories (https://learningchinesethroughstories.com/) is a really great podcast for listening practice and vocabulary. They speak at a natural pace, unlike most educational podcasts. I really like their format of part A: story; part B: line-by-line recap where they talk around the new vocab and introduce lots of synonyms.

I used the app Du Chinese (https://www.duchinese.net/) for a little while. They have bite-sized excerpts sorted by level, inline Pinyin option, and a nice hover-for-definition UI.

dusty citrus
#

mostly want to be able to read datasheets in chinese

because sometimes they have a subtlety not found in a poorly translate english version that sometimes even google translate won't translate correctly either

I've had 2-3 cases so far where google translating the chinese datasheet had more important information than the english translation

wooden schooner
#

that's approximately the exact opposite of my use case, so the above might not be that useful 🙂

dusty citrus
#

spoken languages is more complicated and more involved because peoples don't tend to assume you are a beginner when you try to order in chinese (or vietnamese) in my case in a restaurant and for some reason assume that a guy who look 0 vietnamese is an expert speaker

#

My city is like that apparently

#

Like I said some numbers and they asked back in vietnamese where I learned vietnamese but I only know numbers. You should have seen their look of disappointment 😦

#

plus apparently it was the north vietnamese dialect while they knew the south vietnamese one, so it was the "incorrect vietnamese"

#

just like when native spanish speakers tells me I learn the wrong spanish from Spain because the ecuador/venezuelan/argentinian version is the correct one 🤣

#

The required sskill in spoken language is much higher when you advertise it

#

kinda like when you tell relatives you are in computer science and they think that make you qualified to fix their printer or VHS recorder back then

wooden schooner
#

there's an interesting thing with Chinese where, due to Mao's standardization campaign, there is a distinguished "official" dialect (which Mao himself didn't speak) that is pretty much universally considered the standard and that's what they teach foreigners

dusty citrus
#

apparently in canada mandarin speakers are a minority

wooden schooner

stoic mesa
#

realistically though, if you really need to dissipate that much heat, you need forced air circulation - i.e. fans - or liquid cooling

wanton thistle
# dusty citrus So I was wondering about how to dissipate 100W in a mosfet

FETs are different for heat dissipation. There are I^2R losses and then there are switching losses. Doing some back of the napkin math, and using a Standard (Low RDS on FET), Junction to ambient is 60c°/W for a TO-220 package. Already we can see at 100W it would overheat without doing anything extra.

Lets say we add in a heatsink of 2C°/W. That brings our temperature to a rather high temp of 225C. If we lower the heatsink down more or add in air flow, we can get it down much lower.

#

I have documents saved if you are interested in doing this yourself though

#

or for reference

dusty citrus
#

when you say TO-220 package it sort of imply that you can choose the package?

#

But I didn't see any such options for the mosfet I checked, or there is one such option and I don't understand it

so the only choice seems to be to pick another class N mosfet
