#

Sorta XD I was mostly observing

tardy badger
#

Well, you did it

delicate stream
#

Friday I get thrown at the other 5th grade class, as well as both 2nd grade classes, to swim on my own XD

#

I think I've got it, the curriculum is set up already and nothing crazy

#

Ok, totally unrelated -- I need to fix a model I made and have no idea how to, halp

#

In Blender

#

I've got all... this

#

And these lines like, sticking out that I can't find a vertices for

tardy badger
#

Weird

#

I’m not good with blender unfortunately

delicate stream
#

I was following a tutorial with the grab tool, they didn't have that happen

#

Adding vertices seems to have made it simultaneously better and worse -- I was getting that originally, but the end of the horn [I'm making horns] came to a weird squished shape that curved the wrong way with like 10 vertices left... now I got a nice full thing to work with, but this mess got worse

#

And none of the cleanup tools under mesh appear to help

#

And I need to print this tonight or I shall be slain

#

Ahhh

tardy badger
#

Slain?

delicate stream
#

Person who I'm supposed to have these done for will commit end game on me

tardy badger
#

Oh I see

narrow finch
#

scans or sculpted?

delicate stream
#

Sculpted

narrow finch
#

strategically delete vertices? or the smoothing tool?

delicate stream
#

Smoothing doesn't seem to fix it? And I tried deleting and got a hole, and then Mesh > Clean up > Fill holes" didn't actually fix the hole

narrow finch
#

rough, that is what I would have done

#

flatten do anything?

delicate stream
#

It looks like these twisted tubes appeared inside?

#

Flatten kinda flattens it, but there's still the mess

narrow finch
#

revert to previous restore point?

#

#nothelping

delicate stream
#

I don't have a point without the mess [unless I go back to the beginning]

#

Hey you wouldn't be willing to just make it for me would you, lol

narrow finch
#

not very good just learning to destroy other people's STL files

delicate stream
#

lol

velvet pelican
#

Blender is both amazing and frustrating

delicate stream
#

Indeed

velvet pelican
#

Got any active shaders on it?

narrow finch
#

yes, steep learning curve... determined that a drawing tablet may be necessary

delicate stream
#

If I had to add them, no, no active shaders

velvet pelican
#

Looks like it might be a lighting thing

delicate stream
#

No, it's a big jumble of vertices inside

narrow finch
#

can you reduce the poly to clean it up and then re-poly it up?

delicate stream
#

How do I do that? DX

delicate stream
#

I had subdivided to create more vertices so it wouldn't get blocky as I stretched, but I don't see a reverse

velvet pelican
#

Iirc there is a way to reduce as well

delicate stream
#

Lemme try the reduce polygon thing...

velvet pelican
#

Its just not easily found

#

Been about 7 months since i messed with it but merge vertices was one that I remember being a thing

narrow finch
#

it basically reduces the resolution then you can put it back, it was in a tutorial video I just watched

delicate stream
#

I have 2931768 faces apparently

#

Computer is attempting to catch fire as I reduce

narrow finch
#

yeah that is a bit

#

this process is resource intensive

#

The un-subdivide is the thing I was thinking about

delicate stream
#

Hmm, it seems to hit like 2 cores...

narrow finch
#

it crashes my computer some times

#

but that may just be blender in general

delicate stream
#

If it crashes this beast, it's just broken software XD

narrow finch
#

yes, gtx 1080 core i7 32 gb ram

#

blender crashes

delicate stream
#

I have a 5950X, 3090, and 128GB of RAM... Nothing seems particularly taxed, although cores 1 and 4 on the CPU are bursty

narrow finch
#

that is basically a monster machine... mine is just a laptop

delicate stream
#

The fact that the second iteration appears to be taking longer than the first run frightens me

narrow finch
#

"desktop replacement"

delicate stream
#

And yeah, it's a monster! Mwahahaha

#

I can render to the moooon

narrow finch
#

the whole moon and nothing but the moon

#

I want to make this beholder model I downloaded more terrifying

delicate stream
#

lol

#

Moar eyes

narrow finch
#

I was thinking mouths in the eyes with fangs

#

maybe horns, you know easy things

delicate stream
#

Tentacles with knives?

narrow finch
#

chainsaws

delicate stream
#

Hehe

narrow finch
#

sounding more and more like a powerthirst commercial

delicate stream
#

Update: it got to 1420726 faces

#

Running another iteration...

#

As long as I have the general shape still, I can always add faces back if I need to

narrow finch
#

maybe less detail will be easier to fix, there is an art to lowpoly design I think blender is better at it than zbrush

#

more focus on how the surfaces act (cad like) than forcing the surfaces where you want (sculpting)

delicate stream
#

I can at least clear out the junk tubes inside faster with many less vertices...

narrow finch
#

I think because it is a modifier you can just remove it when you are done

delicate stream
#

Oh, cool

#

I feel like whenever I increase the iteration count, it has to re-calc all steps

#

1262589 faces remaining

narrow finch
#

potentially you could have used decimate to bring the count down as a scalar then put it back to 1

delicate stream
#

Changing it back restores the faces

#

Un-un-subdivision...

#

Aaaand frozen totally going into sculpt mode...

narrow finch
delicate stream
#

I was using un-subdivide

#

Afraid to like, poke and crash it and reload because it might take an hour to get back to this point DX

narrow finch
#

yeah I am stalled out on my "example" this one makes it work

#

I don't know if that makes it any easier

delicate stream
#

I guess I should have done Collapse

narrow finch
#

still looks like alot

delicate stream
#

Not sure if I should close Blender and restart and do that instead DX

narrow finch
#

easy to revert

#

takes more computer work to shrink than to come back

delicate stream
#

Reloading Blender...

narrow finch
#

sorry for helping you crash blender

delicate stream
#

It went a wee bit lower than I wanted, lol

#

I CAN WORK WITH THIS

narrow finch
#

lol good

delicate stream
#

Oh good, going to edit didn't take 1032 years

#

have a good night good luck

lusty fossil
#

I wonder if "disassociate" will or has become a dictionary word. Similar to "irregardless"

velvet pelican
#

Inconceivable!

delicate stream
#

It is, disassociate is an old word... what would it be confused with? Vs. people adding "ir" to "regardless" \

velvet pelican
#

I feel like irregardless came about from a movie and im not even sure the actor actually said that

#

Like it was supposed to be eh regardless

delicate stream
#

I dunno, lol. But disassociate came from the idea of undoing an association, vs. irregardless being like saying "without without regards"

delicate stream

Hmm... that's new to me, but apparently they're both around the same age

#

But I think it's just two terms were coined for the same thing, in terms of word structure they both make sense

My amazon-order potentiometers came with a sticky yellow coating that smells a LOT like urea… Won’t be ordering from that seller again, ever

real falcon
#

some do have protective oil but that is probably not it

dusk oracle
#

that residue looks like urea

#

however dont just not order again

#

write a complaint

#

or you are doing 0% to stop someone else getting the same treatment

blissful roost
#

Nah, that's just the tape's glue discolouring.

#

Very common

real falcon
#

does it smell like urea?

late fulcrum
#

That's just one of many reasons I don't order from amazon.

tardy badger
#

I only buy things that ship prime which has probably saved me a lot of bad experiences

real falcon
#

amazon will never ever resolve problem of clones

tardy badger
#

Nope, or scalpers

late fulcrum
#

I don't order from them at all. There are plenty of better vendors out there, that don't abuse their customers, employees, delivery personnel, and suppliers.

tardy badger
#

As crappy as Amazon is, there are still people that work there that are just trying to get by so even though most of what I’m buying enriches Bezos, there is a little hope that I’m at least helping someone’s paycheck in buying food or whatnot.

#

Some people don’t have a choice and Amazon pays the best in some areas.

#

And I’ve been in situations where you have to just take the best job you can get in that moment

late fulcrum
#

Understood. But I don't have to like or support it.

tardy badger
#

If you don’t like the way Amazon treats people, you should also not support Lowe’s or Home Depot

#

I’ve worked in a Lowe’s distribution center. The largest on the east coast.

late fulcrum
#

I know people that work at all three, so have the opportunity to compare the degree of abuse and adjust my shopping to suit. I also have the advantage of a local family owned hardware store in the grand tradition.

tardy badger
#

$9 an hour to move millions of items by hand. No fork lift. Obscure production numbers to hit “incentive pay”

late fulcrum
tardy badger
#

That is pretty lucky

#

Anyway, each has their own reasons for supporting or not supporting a business

#

I do like supporting family owned businesses a lot

#

Some things are inevitable, and people working at Big Corp still deserve to have a job and in my mind, if even a little goes towards supporting a job that maybe had by a single mother or a struggling father, or a kid trying to make it out of poverty, then that little bit of good is worth it.

quartz wren
#

hides

tardy badger
#

I’ve been at the bottom of Big Corp abuse and minimal wage with maximum effort expected. BUt regardless of how big corp was, I had a job at that time that gave me enough to think about what I needed to move forward in life.

#

Kept my son at the time from being hungry

#

Anyway

#

So weird thing

#

I got this coffee from a local employee owned retailed called Winco. And for the most part it’s been great

tardy badger
#

Double French roast and a Sumatra roast

#

I was using the Coffee Mate peppermint mocha creamer in it with no issues

quartz wren
#

you must not like coffee

#

if you're adding creamer to it

#

;P

tardy badger
#

But drinking international delight or Walmart brand, weird chemical taste no matter how strong or weak the brew is.

#

Something probably in the flavorings used in those brands

#

I do like coffee actually

#

Next thing you’re going to say the British don’t like tea because they put cream and sugar in it

#

Lol

quartz wren
#

I mean

#

to be fair

#

they're making tea flavored sugar cream

#

just like coffee flavored sugar cream

#

tea only needs like a pinch of sugar

#

and nothing else

tardy badger
#

I put little creamer in my coffee

quartz wren
#

okay then you're not the type I was referring to

#

who put 3/4 of the cup full of creamer and put a splash of coffee in

tardy badger
#

It’s usually like.. 10:1 ration of coffee to creamer

quartz wren
#

okay that's reasonable

tardy badger
#

Creamer by itself is gross 🤢

quartz wren
#

eh, depends on the creamer

#

but yeah most are gnarly

tardy badger
#

Homemade creamer isn’t bad

#

I just don’t have the patience to make it

quartz wren
#

or just drinking straight heavy whipping cream

#

all by itself

#

hides

tardy badger
#

Hehe..

#

If you put heavy whipping cream in a mason jar and just shake it really hard for like 10 minutes you’ll get butter

quartz wren
#

I just tried to move my shoulder and remembered I took a tumble yesterday

quartz wren
#

I've made butter many times

quartz wren
#

once I accidentally made butter when I was trying to make chocolate whipped cream

tardy badger
#

Lol

quartz wren
#

nah that tumble isn't even comedy

#

I was running at a metal panel in my makeshift fence to jump over it

#

and it was muddy

#

so I slid on one foot instead of lifting off the ground

#

and plowed right through the metal

#

it was pure comedy

tardy badger
#

There are easier ways to shape metal

quartz wren
#

heh

#

but for real I wish someone had seen it

#

it would've been one of those checks if you're okay "BAHAHAHAHA" moments

tardy badger
#

This is why people wear go pro

quartz wren
#

I don't own one yet

#

what made it even funnier

#

is that I projected exactly what was about to happen in my mind

#

then I shrugged it off and was like "it'll be fine"

#

uff

#

I think there's some soft tissue damage around my shoulder

#

oh and that was after I took a tumble the other night

#

tripped over an old aquarium on my friend's back porch in the dark

#

luckily I caught myself on the deck but I scraped / smacked my arm on the edge of the aquarium on my way down

#

same arm

tardy badger
#

Just a glutton for punishment

quartz wren
#

yeeeeeaaaaaah

#

I would use the M word but it's banned here

#

seriously though, it's always when I'm doing the dumbest stuff that I get hurt

#

and the dumber, the more injured

#

but when I'm doing crazy death defying stuff? always without a scratch

tardy badger
#

That’s usually how it works

#

Also, further proof that 401k are a complete sham

#

The markets were up, broadly yesterday

#

Yet somehow my 401k declined in value

#

I’m just keep pushing down the urge to close my 401k because it’s a tax advantage account and reduces my taxable income

#

Just like paying for health insurance that literally covers nothing…

quartz wren
#

yeah...part of the reason I'm not participating in the employment game

#

that and being so bipolar nobody wants to keep me on staff

quartz wren
#

someone had a reason to gain something from 401k's reducing in value so they pulled some strings

tardy badger
#

I know how the stock market works, I’ve been investing for years. I just hate 401k

#

But it’s one of the few ways that commoners can reduce taxable wages

quartz wren
#

yeah I payed into one when I was working for an aircraft interior manufacturer

#

but I didn't really know why, because it was my first job that offered it and I was like 20

tardy badger
#

401k are only really fine if you can make that maximum contribution of 10% with 5-7% company match

#

They you can grow it fast enough to actually see it grow

#

Unfortunately I don’t have the luxury of contributing 10%, I can barely contribute 6% and my employer doesn’t match until a year of employment

#

Which is kind of crappy since I am an engineer. But companies have just been reducing benefits across the board even for long time employees

#

Gotta fund executive compensation and stock buybacks!

#

They’re not using the money they save on benefits to fund bigger pay raises for those actually providing value.

quartz wren
#

at least you aren't trying to start a company with nothing 😉

#

an R&D lab, no less

tardy badger
#

I run a maker business that I started with an $80 investment lol

thick wind
tardy badger
#

Yeah, I already had a hot plate and hot air station

#

The $80 investment was for PCB and parts for the first product

#

A simple $3 load switch breakout

thick wind
#

Dang, that's not bad at all.

#

Maybe I'll just make a reflow oven and design some PCBs on the side, if grad school doesn't pan out...

tardy badger
#

Lol it’s a lot of fun

quartz wren
#

Most of the lab is built with scrap material but a few things needed to be purchased

#

So far only floor frame plywood, outlets + some of the electrical components, and doors have been purchased, future purchases include a couple windows, insulation, and sheetrock. Other than that it's just scrap and donations. Got Cat-5 running through the walls because a friend of mine sent me a thousand feet out of nowhere when I was complaining about how hard it is to gather lots of cheap ethernet cables from thrift and lop the ends off lol

#

Not hard because physically difficult but because you have to go thrifting on a regular basis to multiple places to find the current good deals

#

If I lived in town that wouldn't be a problem but I live 5+ miles from the nearest thrift store

#

Walking distance but only if I plotted a course and set the whole day aside

#

Point is I've had some generous donors and have a keen eye for repurposing things

#

I think so far people have donated about $800-$1000 of money and purchased goods but not all of that is toward the building

#

Some of that is equipment

#

Such as the universal chip programmer I use all the time haha

#

Which just on its own was like $250 and I was going to pay my mom back but she told me to consider it an investment in the lab

#

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#

Could have got a cheaper one but I was looking for the one that did all the chips I was planning on flashing and the initial plan was to borrow money not to get an investment

velvet pelican
tardy badger
#

Yeah, I feel the same way

#

I do like their bulk spices though

velvet pelican
#

Yeah and the carne asada is good

tardy badger
#

I’ve not tried their carne asada as I usually make my own lol

velvet pelican
#

We go and do all of our canned goods and non perishable item shopping and stock up. The only place that beats their prices is cosco

#

I dont have a good meat slicer to make it as thin as they do

#

3/8” thick is hard to cut freehand and i dont got time for that 😂

tardy badger
#

I usually cook it and then just make 1/4-1/2” wide strips

#

Then cut the strips into like 2” long pieces

#

Usually pretty tender and delicious

velvet pelican
#

What cut of meat do you use for it

#

Like a bottom round?

tardy badger
#

Skirt steak

#

It’s the most common cut for carne asada

#

That or you can use flank steak

late fulcrum
#

What we call a skirt steak is known as a "faja" ("belt") cut in Mexico, from which we get the term "fajitas"

tardy badger
#

It’s a great cut for fajitas and carne asada

But I reinvest basically everything

#

Which is fine because I only pay taxes on what I extract from the company in monies so lol..

stoic mesa

now you know how big companies manage to pay zero taxes!

tardy badger
#

Hahaha yeah

wooden schooner
#

oh I thought they did that by incorporating themselves in a state or country that has nothing to do with where they actually do their real work

#

@tardy badger did you have to learn a bunch of tax know-how when you started your company?

tardy badger
#

Sort of

#

I did a single member LLC

#

Works like a pass through entity

#

Income tax is just self employment tax reported on my tax return

#

And then I pay sales and use tax to the state

#

It’s all confusing

wooden schooner
#

tardy badger
#

I usually use TurboTax

#

But I’m thinking about H&R Block this year

#

Mostly to have someone go over the details and make sure it’s all right

#

I’ll have to find a separate accountant for sales & use tax though

stray wind
#

I'm simply self-employed, and it's still been so complicated to me that I pay someone to do it. Part of it is, I only started needing to do it in 2017, and every year I say I'll learn to do it myself, but the world got... complicated. And I don't have it in me to figure it out right now. So I'm still paying someone. I mean, chances are, they're finding more to save me money than I could manage.

tardy badger
#

Probably since they designed the tax system

#

We could have such a simple tax system… but nooooooooo

stray wind
#

Yeah..... yeah.

tardy badger
#

TurboTax and H&R Block and the big tax accounting industry just had to make to so there are 18000 tax loop holes and rules

#

How could anyone who doesn’t spend their entire life in the tax code ever understand that

#

And it changes every time new tax legislation is passed and it gets more and more complicated..

stray wind
#

My partner is really really really really good with taxes...... in Canada. 🙄

Well, I guess I don't need to wonder how you got the splinter. :p

#

I think I accidentally spooked the apartment maintenance tech. A few days ago I got an email that the apartment maintenance folks would be replacing our air filters. I had already replaced it with a better one, so I called and asked them to not replace mine. Fast forward to today, and I get the alert I hoped would never trigger:

#

I was… concerned, so I called the office to check if it was maintenance. The office person put me on hold for a bit and then confirmed that my message about the filter hadn’t made it to the maintenance team, it was them, they’re sorry, and he noticed he triggered my alarm.

#

I thought it was odd that the tech would mention that, and odder still that the person I spoke with would pass it along, and then I looked at the sound file that played from a nearby speaker when the door closed:

#

So I can see why it might have made impression. 😁

So you are manually blocking people trying to get into your network or what? My network knowledge is sub par

Technically it's over par but that's not the idiom

DNS resolves domain names to IPs, PiHole "blocks" domains by routing it to an unroutable IP such as 0.0.0.0. Mainly intended for adblocking but good for many other things.

quartz wren

I'm considering revisiting my tape drive project

but instead of using a microcontroller, base it around a 6502

#

or perhaps the CPU that's on the old 80MB HDD I took apart a while back

#

but something period to the technology

silver shale
#

not sure exactly what the device is but a FPGA could be used?

quartz wren
#

could be but then I'm just adding an extra step

#

I have a bunch of old CPUs laying around, it's about time I put one of them to use

#

just found a 2K SRAM chip

#

should be plenty for buffering to and from a tape

#

and I've got some UVEPROM chips but I'm not sure how viable they are

silver shale
#

my dad found an PCB out of an early-2000s amplifier controller and gave it to me since he thought I would have a use for it (and i do actually). It has a XCS10, DS80C323, two 24LC128 and a 27SF020.

quartz wren
#

that's quite a score

#

oh! maybe I'll find the graphing calculator board I took apart and use its z80 for controlling the tape drive

#

but if I remember correctly I had no luck last time I tried to find that board

#

things will be better when I have space to organize in the lab

been planning out a way to reuse memory ICs off from modules for months now

and properly categorize them

#

been writing something in Python Flask, found that it is easier for me to SSH into the server and use VIM or nano from there.

quartz wren
#

Can't seem to find either the old HDD board or the graphing Calc board :(

#

I guess I could just snag the 6507 I was going to make a laptop with and use it for the tape drive control

#

Give it 2k of RAM and 8k banks of flash that are externally selectable for different modes' code memory but ignore the lower at 2k in each code block, using the RAM instead

silver shale
#

6507 laptop, interesting

quartz wren
#

Yeah I kind of want to just scrap that, use the full 6502 for a laptop, and use the 6507 to control the tape drive for magnetic storage

silver shale
#

been planning a SP7021 laptop, a 6502 would be a really interesting build

quartz wren
#

I also found a way to deepen the stack without breaking software compatibility for anything using the stack through its designated opcodes

#

Simply detect when two subsequent calls to the stack page are non-sequential and increment / decrement a stack page counter as necessary

#

Since the 6502 only uses the 0x01XX range you can replace that high part of the address with an extended counter that represents the high stack address

#

So you subtract each address value from previous value. If there's a carry or borrow you'll be able to easily detect that using a difference rollover detector and increment or decrement the extended address counter as eneded

silver shale

silver shale

I had a dream last night that I kind of want to follow through on

silver shale

I have dreams sometimes that tell me facts that may or may not be true

I once had a dream that was just an infinite graphing grid that I could think equations and they would graph

silver shale

so I slept on it and came to the answer

silver shale
quartz wren
#

I want to make magnetic storage media in cylindrical form factor

#

Just for the novelty factor mostly

#

Also because simple to manufacture in-shop

#

Just a 3D printed hollow cylinder that's wrapped in magnetic tape

#

And it will be able to detect the cylinder radius based on displacement of the roller clamps

quartz wren
#

So you could have multi-size disks in the same drive

#

Also the drive mechanism itself can be fairly small, as only part of the drum needs to be inserted to read it (the rest would rotate outside of the mechanism)

#

And because it will be able to accommodate a range of drum diameters, you will be able to stack different sized drums inside of each other

Yes.
One of the reasons I never discuss politics or similarly sensitive topics on twitter. Been there, done that, never again.

I do discuss it on FB sometimes, but on FB all my posts are for friends only, and virtually all my friends are people I know in real life, many of them for decades, so most of them are capable of reasoning and listening to the opponent rather than flying off the handle right away. Unfortunately, not all of them - even in my small group.

tardy badger

I’m just surprised that common discourse just.. isn’t very common anymore. There’s a push for holding fringe positions and silenced should be those who even slightly disagree with you.

In US elections of 2016, there were quite a few websites (usually run from Romania or other Eastern European country) spreading all kinds of fake news. I am not talking about difference of positions, I am talking about verifiable false statements, sometimes very outrageous.

They were not in it for political reasons - just for money; they had advertisers, and the more people come to the website, the better.

They were asked why they did fake news - why didn't they publish the real ones instead? The answer was that fake ones attracted way more clicks.

Wired ran a feature on that business, IIRC.

Awwww. Fair enough.

If I had a Pi 400, I'd put bunny streams on the TV. Lol

tardy badger
#

Welp, baby is anatomically a boy

#

And the name we originally thought about isn’t a good fit so we are back to the drawing board hahaha

stray wind
#

Though I get it. Naming things is hard enough, naming people is way worse.

tardy badger
#

Yeah, we’re going for something decidedly non-American

#

Going for something Finnish

#

My wife loves Finnish names

stoic mesa
#

is she Finnish herself?

tardy badger
#

I am part Finnish and my mom is nearly full blood Finn

#

My grandfather was first generation Finnish American 🙂

tardy badger

There are two other kids in my daughters kindergarten with very similar names to my daughters

#

And they all more or less go by the same short name

Oh I practically broke my floor rofling at this the other day

It's tangentially related

Thankfully my son is the only person in his class with the name he has

@silver shale I was thinking about your flask app today and was reminded on a task I had as an intern with JP Morgan to make a “Sanction Activity Monitor”

#

I used Flask to make it

#

Pretty fun looking back on it

#

it was a task where you basically had a week to throw something together

silver shale
tardy badger
#

It was just a little task not anything proprietary that would actually be used

silver shale
#

I know, thinking the thing I am putting together could be a basis for something

tardy badger

Oh well cool! Open source is the way to go for sure

Why do people always choose my reply tweets to carry out flame wars on

quartz wren
#

@tardy badger it may not mean much but tell your wife that some rando on the internet says congratulations

tardy badger
#

👍🏻

quartz wren
#

especially since I know how hard it is to talk through an employment gap with a prospective employer

tardy badger
#

Yeah, or that the only jobs you could get a lot the way were crappy because no one would hire entry level without 5-7 years of experience

quartz wren
#

yeah...

#

it's cool though, not having a job has given me the impetus to make a job for myself that I enjoy

tardy badger
#

My wife started a catering business and it was only after things started picking up that a job finally called her back

quartz wren
#

heh

#

knowing my luck I'll have my lab in full swing and Lex Fridman will contact me about the application

tardy badger

It’s fine though, this job wants to hire her and pay her well and they have decent benefits like paid maternity leave for 6 weeks which she wouldn’t have if she was catering

Heh heh, if it makes you feel better, you could imagine it's a situation of needing to fill seats. "Her family is inviting like 100 people! I don't have that many relatives or close friends, so my side of the church is going to look pathetic!"

Probably in reference to bodge wires

stray wind

My parents built their house before I was born, and my dad put a full wood shop in the basement.

lusty fossil
#

bodging is also to make a quick or hasty fix

quartz wren
#

@late fulcrum if you're the mad bodger I'm the artful bodger

wary herald
#

That's probably more likely

#

Bodging is a traditional woodturning craft, using green wood to make chair legs and other cylindrical parts of chairs. The work was done close to where a tree was felled. The itinerant craftsman who made the chair legs was known as a bodger or chair-bodger.

#

That's what Wikipedia said

So, the Astley Paradox:

If you ask Rick Astley for his copy of the movie Up, he cannot give it to you as he will never give you Up. However, in doing so he lets you down. Thus creating the Astley Paradox.
