What's a polite way to get out of a conversation with a serious talker? I've tried variations of, "We'll I've got to get moving/work on this project/ do this task...." to little avail

You can escalate to "I'm sorry, but I really need to go do {task}, I'll talk to you later" and if they have alternate communication with you like texting, you can tell them to text you. Sometimes you just need to put your foot down -- if they just keep ranting when you already said you need to go, they're being rude after you were polite. (I'm bad at putting my foot down because I'm too nice, and have been trapped in these situations for 20-30 minutes longer than I wanted if I didn't have a serious deadline)

@lusty fossil Ask for contact information and insist it be written. Few can write and talk much at all. Plan your exit while they're writing.

I got a message from someone ostensibly at alibaba on linkedin asking if I want alibaba to stock FBS products

I mean

they're still pre-prototype

#

I think I want to put a massive FBS logo on the roof and walls of my lab

I'm within 5 miles of the nearest airport

heck, google maps has a high enough resolution that when they update it I should be able to make out the FBS logo if I make it big enough

#

Actually... can the support team supply technical data if I email them? For things not on the product page?

quartz wren
#

I mean if the proto board can't handle the power, just supplement the traces with thicker wires

#

Or beef them up with a thick layer of solder

delicate stream

Actually, I just realized, I don't need to worry about it, the NeoPixel power can go right to my DC jack

Solutions come from thinking XD but I am still curious what the board can handle, but not sure if the support team can tell me more than the product page

You can always sacrifice a board for destructive testing

#

Just make sure to do it in a fire resistant pie tin

As in

#

A steel one

#

Not a disposable aluminum one

#

Then you send the company a bill for the testing and when they pay send them the numbers šŸ˜‰

Lol, I'd rather not do it that way... Not looking for extra fire right now

Fair... I'm a pyro so I take pleasure in destructive testing (done safely)

Lol

quartz wren
#

Oh! Electrical is 100% šŸ˜„

#

The outside motion sensor light is installed

delicate stream
#

Powah!

quartz wren
#

Which was the last bit of electrical work to do

#

Required a bit of rework of the fixture so my dad kind of jumped in and took care of it, he's a bit zealous about modifying things to work so I figured I'd just let him have his fun haha

delicate stream
#

As long as everything is wired up safely and does what you need, yeah, let him have fun, lol

quartz wren
#

Yeah he has wired up a lot of buildings (I helped a bit growing up so I knew the basics of what is required already before this project) and he's the one who showed me the rest of what I had to do to wire it up correctly

#

I did most of it which feels great šŸ˜„

#

Thing is, I technically knew how to do it before but I wasn't comfortable taking on the whole project without guidance

#

And the guidance I got just confirmed what I thought I knew

#

But I also learned some stuff that was an older standard and got corrected on more modern standards by some online friends so I'm keeping that in mind for future electrical work

#

Namely it is apparently incorrect to have the ground pin facing down because it increases the risk of shorting things I guess but it's so common that I'm not worried about leaving my lab wired with ground down but I'll put it upward on future installs

#

Not that it really affects things after the install just makes it easier to avoid a short while installing

delicate stream
#

I've picked up how to do electrical from my dad too. He did work with a company that did weatherization for low income families, and he'd do electrical and insulation for them. He wired up our whole house too when my parents moved in here

quartz wren
#

Yeah my dad used to do maintenance on some older buildings at a college somewhere in Nebraska or something and then he was working for a place in the town we are now that he did a lot of both electrical and electronics work

delicate stream
#

What I'm considering for my RGBW lighting control. Please guess what you think the buttons do

#

(that came out sideways, it's oriented so you can read the board)

quartz wren
#

But also he was in the air force with a fairly high clearance so there's stuff about his knowledge that's inaccessible to me

delicate stream
#

My dad was in the Navy and also has secrets, although most of it is for old sonar stuff as far as I know

#

Guess what you think the buttons on my interface do XD

quartz wren
#

Yeah from what he was able to tell me he worked with seismic sensing to act as a worldwide nuclear weapon testing watchdog

#

But that's about all I could gather

quartz wren
delicate stream
#

Yup, + and - for each channel. What do you think the big buttons are for?

quartz wren
#

Why not one of these?

#

So you can show it what color to display

delicate stream
#

I'd need color samples XD I just want to be able to up and down each channel

quartz wren
#

Por que no los dos?

#

Then you can define the color manually or quickly show it a sample you want it to display

#

Then get a big color wheel like what digital artists use

#

(ones who want to do prints of their art)

delicate stream
#

That would be a thing I'd need to have on hand and not lose... I'd rather just be able to set it

delicate stream
#

Ok, good, it's fairly intuitive

honest jolt
#

Wait red is on and black is off right?

delicate stream
#

Yeah

quartz wren
#

You could also have an app for color picking on your phone and then you don't need to use the onboard LED to light the sample as it is self lit

#

Unless you have a habit of losing your phone

delicate stream
#

I don't want to have to use my phone or an app

#

Wasn't going to have any wireless

quartz wren
#

I just meant having the phone display a color on its screen then use the sensor to sample it

#

Then have a toggle for the sensor LED in case you want to sample an object

delicate stream
#

Too complicated... I need to be able to come in, tappa tap it on and maybe change color in the morning

quartz wren
#

delicate stream
#

The weird thing is I recently ended a project so I have some free RAM, not sure why it's having an issue now

quartz wren
#

Huh...

#

Well

#

No reason to let a good idea go to waste

#

I'm going to borrow your button input design and combine it with the color sense module I picked up a while back for the RGB strings I'll be running around my lab

delicate stream
#

Lol, have fun

quartz wren
#

I absolutely will lol

#

I may even make the Cat-5 I'm running for cameras inside the lab do double duty to send color data around to different strings

#

Just like idk get a pi for each camera that just hooks into ethernet and have it control its string

#

Since the color control shouldn't cause too much overhead for the camera system

delicate stream
#

Unrelated... USB 2 rated Type C cable vs. the one included with the enclosure... Drive is rated for 3300Mbps read and 3000Mbps write... so is it the drive or the enclosure holding things back when I use the proper cable? :O

delicate stream

tardy badger

delicate stream
#

And now my TPM is disabled so I don't have to worry if Microsoft decides to force Windows 11 upgrades like they did with 10

#

Well, my BIOS changes took longer than the updates XD

#

Weird... It still shows compatible in Settings, unless it just checks once and then remembers that forever

tardy badger
#

Lol maybe the windows 11 install subverts bios and activates the TPM

delicate stream
#

I would literally consider filing a lawsuit for that

quartz wren
#

I honestly would not be surprised coming from Microsoft

#

Their history of doing shady things with software isn't exactly great

delicate stream
#

The history and continued not goodness is part of why I'm transitioning to Linux

tardy badger
quartz wren
#

And as per their history with that: good luck on the lawsuit they'll just acquire your company

#

Through subversive means

delicate stream
tardy badger
#

They’ll setup a company in your name, sign them to your lawsuit and then ā€œsettleā€ with the company to bury the lawsuit

delicate stream
quartz wren
tardy badger
#

They can list you as an executive lol

delicate stream
#

But also you can't transfer the lawsuit

tardy badger
#

Nothing stops them from doing it

quartz wren
tardy badger
#

A company can sign as a co-plaintiff

#

Lol..

delicate stream
#

Even if they named me as exec, the lawsuit wouldn't be in the company name, and they can't just add themselves/the company on

tardy badger
#

The co-signed company can petition for a class action suit

#

You would be surprised what companies like Microsoft are capable of doing

#

It’s not illegal just unethical

quartz wren
#

Look up what they did to Netscape and if you're still curious follow the rabbit hole

delicate stream
#

I don't think there's any way to attach yourself or your company to someone else's lawsuit

tardy badger
#

The could file a secondary lawsuit citing yours

delicate stream
#

That would still be independent of mine

tardy badger
#

And then through back door legal magic get yours combined into a single lawsuit

delicate stream
#

I don't think it works that way

tardy badger
#

It’s done all the time

quartz wren
#

I don't want to get political but money changing hands that's "not a bribe" can do crazy things

delicate stream
#

I've never heard of such a thing

tardy badger
#

There’s plenty of things most people haven’t heard done but still happen

delicate stream
#

I mean, I know, but can you show me an example?

tardy badger
#

Your knowledge of it happening doesn’t preclude its existence and use

delicate stream
#

I just don't think it's possible. If you're building a lawsuit based on a previous lawsuit and the first one goes thru, it can collapse yours, but I don't think it's possible to go the other way around

quartz wren
#

If there's some loophole or backdoor in the legal system, Microsoft's well payed lawyers will spend all the time they need to find it and use it as effectively as possible to their advantage

#

All I'm getting at

#

(as per their history)

#

And if nothing else they will drag your suit against them out as long as possible to bleed you dry of money through legal fees

#

And it will be a tiny scratch on their capital

tardy badger
#

Anyway, we’re beating a dead horse here

delicate stream
#

Yeah, they'll definitely take advantage of every single loophole. I just don't think there's a way they can usurp the lawsuit... but yeah, probs drag me thru the mud as much as they can

So... if a company can create another company in your name, glom it onto your lawsuit, and then settle with the company they made, why wouldn't Apple have made another company to sign onto Epic's lawsuit and then settled with the other company? That would be one heck of a loophole

tardy badger
tardy badger
delicate stream
#

So then I could create a company and then sue them and they couldn't do that then

tardy badger
#

I’d file a class action suit

Though it’s harder to get companies to admit their wrong and get changes that way

#

Most class action suits are monetarily motivated, mostly by lawyers looking for large paydays

Honestly I don't think I'd actually try sueing them as in individual... I'd roll back my system to 10, and then speed up my movement to Linux

O_O

#

Hooves?!

lusty fossil
#

Isn't it made from gelatin? Thought that came from hooves

delicate stream
#

Oh.... Gelatin can be taken from hooves, but I was gonna say, marshmallows are not made OF hooves, lol

#

I think gelatin has other sources now...

lusty fossil
#

I have a marshmallow chocolate covered snack that's made from fish gelatin

delicate stream
#

I don't think they generally use hooves

#

Ok, so, non-animal based gelatin is a technical thing, but not made in scale

#

Wikipedia says "Most gelatin is derived from pork skins, pork and cattle bones, or split cattle hides.", but I don't know if hooves count as bones

lusty fossil
#

black tattoo ink is also often made from animal bones unless you specifically ask for vegan ink

delicate stream
#

Huh, that I had no idea about

lusty fossil
#

I'm no tattoo artist, just something I heard from someone with lots of tattoos

delicate stream

Random interesting facts

#

Maybe? Although you would likely damage cells with any current passing thru...

lusty fossil
#

that's true

#

I can dream

delicate stream
#

Indeed

#

I can imagine very fine wires being implanted under the surface of the skin

I just would imagine ink would get separated by cells over time and cause breaks, and either the circuit wouldn't work or would arc and damage cells

tardy badger

lusty fossil
#

I have several, all carefully hidden by clothes. Cali is pretty chill about tattoos but I don't want there to be a chance at not getting a job because of one

delicate stream

I have a few fears with tattoos... 1] I get one and it comes out horribly 2] I get one and I end up not liking the thing later 3] pain 4] how it might look if I get old and my skin stretches out

#

Is there a practical difference between having a button connected between a digital pin and ground vs. V+?

#

Like, does it matter if you're pulling up or down?

lusty fossil
#

I think you need to pull one up and one down?

#

I always get mixed up tho

#

Could also depend on how you handle it in software

tardy badger
#

Depends what you want your default signal to be

#

If you want low active, pull it down and connect the button terminal to VCC

delicate stream
#

I know if you set the pin HIGH you shunt to ground and if you set LOW you shunt to V+, but does it make any practical difference?

stoic mesa
#

the only difference is that you have internal pullups on all mcus, and internal pulldowns on select few

delicate stream
#

Just wasn't sure if there were any power differences or anything

tardy badger
#

It’s mostly how you want to handle logic

#

MCU have weak internal pull-ups so it’s usually best to use external ones

delicate stream
#

So probably better to pull down to ground if I don't want to use external resistors?

tardy badger
#

But either way, it’s really up to you

#

If you use internal pull up, connect the button terminal to ground

#

If not, use an external pull down and connect the button terminal to VCC

delicate stream
#

Ahh, ok, I want to go to VCC then

lusty fossil
#

Any reason not to plug my official iPad charger into my wireless headphones case?

#

delicate stream

Nope, as long as your headphones follow the USB standard

lusty fossil
#

Is that bad?

#

I would assume that Apple products of the same or close Gen would work interchangeably

delicate stream
#

MacBook chargers can do high voltage charging, but they start with 5V and negotiate for higher power

lusty fossil
#

Ahh

delicate stream
#

The only device I know of that's really off spec in a potentially harmful way is the Switch -- apparently they did something weird, and using chargers other than the official Switch charger can cause damage

lusty fossil
#

Wow, that's a pretty big oversight

quartz wren
#

Sounds to me like it's intentional so they can deny warranty if you broke it with an unsupported supply

lusty fossil
#

Which is just poor design

#

If so that sounds like a penny pincher decision

delicate stream
#

Yeah, not an accident

quartz wren
#

It's so they can sell you official supplies and if you buy something third party they aren't liable for the damage it may cause

#

Thus channeling charger sales their direction

delicate stream
#

Pretty much yeah

quartz wren
#

At the same time though they really should just make a proprietary connector if it's going to be a proprietary device.

#

But cost

delicate stream
#

Yeah...

#

Other devices can use the Switch charger tho

wooden schooner
tardy badger
#

What do you mean?

wooden schooner
#

Why would the weakness of the pullup be an issue

tardy badger
#

Well, it depends. Weak pull ups can be fine for button presses that happen infrequently.

#

But say I have a reset button

#

Or a secondary one o should say

#

The weak internal pull up might not keep the voltage to that pin sufficiently high all the time

#

Plus considering it’s internally configured in software, it might give a bad reading initially on start up

wooden schooner
#

Why would the MCU have an internal pullup that couldn't stay at digital high?

#

That seems completely useless

tardy badger
#

Well, space constraints

#

Or signals that have a degree of timing and variance

#

The internal pull-up for an internal pull up resistor is usually like 100k

#

And it can be create for testing a rough idea

#

One area where the internal pull up is enough are strapping pins

#

For instance the ESP32-S2

#

The strapping pins used for say the boot button use internal pull up.

#

So when you press your boot button and pull the signal low, you go into the dfu mode

#

I’m this case, the pull-up helps simplify the end user design

wooden schooner
#

For a button switch as doctor has, internal pullup seems totally appropriate

#

In fact, if it were not appropriate for that application then it seems kind of pointless to have the internal pullup

tardy badger
#

Well, sure it should be fine.

#

But if you are concerned about reliability, external pull ups are the way to go

wooden schooner
#

Hm gtk

tardy badger
#

But again, lots of factors play into how you set up your logic

#

And your switch

#

I personally use external pull ups because they have strong drive than internal. It’s more predictable.

#

Some signals require external too, so that’s another consideration.

I learned more teaching myself as a homeschooler (parents weren't qualified to teach me at the level I was at, so I did a combination of self teaching and online classes) than I ever would have in public school

#

now, does that mean this is a better option for everyone? no. if you're the kind of person the system was built for and you don't have an excessive drive to learn anything and everything you can then public school is probably your best option.

@swift hatch I was watching this video you made 4 years ago. Super helpful, and it makes me realize how much you’re style has grown since then and it’s pretty darn awesome how much value you can fit in your content. šŸ™‚ https://youtu.be/y6HiDnyhRa0

Solve microcontroller-to-NeoPixel mismatches with a level shifter. 3v3 micros can talk with 5V NeoPixels, they just need a translator. That translator is the ever handy logic level shifter. Often, a mismatch of logic levels can cause strange behavior, such as dim or wrong-colored pixels -- especially on longer wire runs or in projects that use l...

I also realize I’m going to just add an Adafruit level shifter to my TreeHouse Terminal Wifi light controller

I need to add a 3.3V out..

Hey wait... can CP do voice processing?

tardy badger

My thought is connect with Adafruit IO for color control. Display information on the screen and navigate left and right with the buttons

Uhhhh maybe?

There’s this learn guide so maybe šŸ™‚

As I thought from the Echo in the picture, Alexa does the voice part

This would work in my house, but it would be cooler to be able to talk right to a CP device and have it do the do

tardy badger

Yeah, probably easier with blinka on a rpi

Then you can install the voice assistant on the pi and have a more direct interaction

That'd be good too

There’s some examples with the voice bonnet

There was an experiment tried a while back of including subliminal messages (like "don't steal") in the muzak in stores. It turns out a small fraction of the population has a contrary reaction to subliminal messages and will do the opposite, so the concept was scrapped.

yeah, also just because someone birthed you doesn't mean they know better than you...

just means they've got the potential to
