But Bill Nye said question everything

And I can’t let bill nye down

delicate stream

If you question everything, you have to question Bill's command to question everything

#

:O

tardy badger
#

I did, and I then could only continue to question everything lol

delicate stream

lol

#

but you missed the question you should have asked about those steps

lusty fossil

I respect the fact that language changes and the dictionary should reflect modern usage, but if they ever add a note to your saying see: you're, I will explode

delicate stream

It's only wrong until it isn't

lusty fossil

I haaaaaate thissssss

delicate stream
#

Sometimes it really do be like that

lusty fossil
#

see that kind of usage I have no problem with, I can totally understand it

But when someone misuses your/you're it's like my brain has to screech to a halt and figure out what they meant!

delicate stream

Honestly my brain auto-corrects a lot

And I'm already doing basically minimal exercise to keep me hungry enough to stay at a healthy weight

wooden schooner

don't stop exercising yo, unless there is serious medical reason

quartz wren

I don't intend to, I just keep it light. Walking, building things, a bit of climbing on stuff

the reason i'm saying this is that i havent been able to afford a upgrade for 10 years

That's totally fair

quartz wren
#

random thought

#

could milk be considered albedo juice?

#

albedo comes from the latin "albus" which means white

#

which just made me realise

#

dumbledore is literally named "white"

#

but in latin

delicate stream
#

Lolwut

dusk oracle
#

"Albedo (from Latin albedo 'whiteness') is the measure of the diffuse reflection of solar radiation out of the total solar radiation and measured on a scale from 0, corresponding to a black body that absorbs all incident radiation, to 1, corresponding to a body that reflects all incident radiation. Surface albedo is defined as the ratio of radiosity J e to the irradiance E e (flux per unit area) re..."

#

-Ratio of reflected radiation to incident radiation-

delicate stream
#

I know about albedo in that context, just did not expect musings about milk being albedo juice and Dumbledore just having "white" in Latin as a first name XD

dusk oracle
wooden schooner
#

I mean it was intentional

#

Voldemort as well

delicate stream
#

Whaaaa

wooden schooner
#

You thought it was a coincidence that he has "mort" (death) in his name?

delicate stream
#

... My brain did not separate that part out

quartz wren
#

Yeah I got the voldemort one but I didn't make the albus connection until today

#

When I was watching an Anton Petrov video and he said "albedo means whiteness in Latin" and then my brain went on a tangent and I'm like "that makes milk albedo juice" and I got curious so I looked up the etymology of albedo and saw albus and I'm like "holy Dumbledore batman!"

wooden schooner
#

yeah I wouldn't expect most people (i.e. who haven't studied latin or whatever) to know what album means

#

(and the english word "album" doesn't really help imo...)

#

closest actually useful english connection would maybe be albino

I love when I remember how much I like a band, and dive back in. (Belle and Sebastian)

quartz wren
#

(redistributes surface forces so you don't get hot spots of stress)

#

A square or hexagonal lattice on the inner wall might do the same with even less mass increase

#

But to a lesser degree since to transfer force from one side to the opposite side with a lattice requires passing through lattice on the whole interior face of the object, but with cubic infill it gets transmitted across the volume

quartz wren
#

Also with cubic infill it's basically a multidirectional hexagonal lattice that spans the interior

subtle fable
#

I mean it's going to have to withstand being fired from a shotgun so i need all the strength i can get

quartz wren
#

So I would say 3 walls, 5% cubic infill as a starting point

#

Then if that survives you can start reducing wall thickness and infill percentage to tune to the requirements

#

Or you could do a full dynamic structural analysis and have an optimal projectile before you even print

#

But I don't have solid works so I work with solids instead

subtle fable
#

I mean i'm probably gonna increase infill until i reach 100% and if it still works i'll go with that

quartz wren

I just learn all the skills I can

#

To some degree of proficiency that's useful

I mean really I just learn to learn but I learn best by doing

Also digging is a skill that I'm very proficient in lol

Wahoo!! achievement unlocked been moving from place to place for a while but finally was able to move into my Hacker HQ and get the soldering iron out! (For the first time 😝) wanted to practice on a test PCB before just “going ham” on my nice Ada gear 😅😆 Successfully pulled a tiny SMT from this PCB I got off of a high def tv - this PCB seems to transfer video and voltage to the individual pixel scan lines and runs along the entire bottom of the TV enclosure, and gets its feed signal from the main “logic board” of the tv (which I also recovered hee hee!) - the “2000” labeled spot in the second pic is where I pulled it from - kinda guessing it’s a transistor because it has 3 legs (BCE? 🤨😄) - dunno if I’ll ever use it but I’m super proud of myself for lifting it without breaking the pins 😁 method used was the soldering iron, solder and wick from my LadyAda Electronics Toolkit and some lovely no-clean flux I grabbed on Amazon ☺️

tardy badger

Like in a year or so

I’m pushing for open source

Mostly because a bunch of our perspective customers greatly benefit and contribute to open source tech

delicate stream
#

I feel like starting in secret isn't a bad idea if it ends up open source -- like, if you have a good idea and share and someone makes it faster, you might not get a chance to make it... but if you make the thing and then everyone else is just building, you'll have established yourself already [I mean, they can still potentially outcompete you, but not keep you from getting off the ground]

tardy badger

Yeah, exactly. Our goal here is we are developing a proprietary hardware and software stack for VLC communications. Parts or certain platforms associated with it will be open source with more advanced closed source/enterprise offerings. Sort of like the Arduino approach

#

So I had a really rough day yesterday mostly due to poor design of electrical boxes + outlets + ground crimps, and ended up running out of material because of it, got access to more wire (what I ran out of due to having barely enough and breaking a wire too short to use) so today I did all of the work I possibly can without laying more wire this evening 😄

#

Which means I just have 4 sections of wire and 3 outlets to connect (2 are half connected so I'm counting them as one)

#

Plus 2 light sockets and 4 switches

#

(already connected one light socket, so 3 light switches and one for the fume hood fan, and this switch will eventually be replaced in its box by a power relay)

#

(to be controlled by external logic circuitry with lower power inputs)

#

Anyway I'm almost over the electrical wiring frustration hurdle so the next step is figuring out financing insulation and sheetrock

#

Well not the direct next step... The direct next steps are to seal all the holes in the paneling (walls can be done during the first of the annual monsoons we get here but I have to wait for a break in the rain to do the roof, which needs to be done before the next step) and then sealing the floor, and painting that. Then I'll be ready for insulating and sheetrock

#

Then I can put the floor tiles in and start building the interior of the place

#

That's when things get real because I'll be able to set up my whole array of lab spaces that I tend to have crammed into a single table in my bedroom at once without overlap

#

Because I'm making most of the wall space into desk surface with shelves above and the tall wall will have a 3D printer filament extruder

#

And my brother is building a plastic shredder so we will be able to recycle plastic into filament so I can print out whatever I want at very least carbon neutrally

#

(once I have the printers on renewables)

#

(and the recycling stuffs)

#

But eventually I want to branch out into making construction materials from the miscellaneous plastics so they aren't landfilled but they are still locking carbon

#

To work towards being technically carbon negative

#

Because the carbon would be being sequestered before entering the environment and locked into something that's meant to last

#

The way I see it is that landfills are the equivalent of misusing antibiotics. You're producing a hostile environment that breeds things capable of surviving that environment and so what we should expect from them is several bacteria evolving independent mechanisms for breaking down plastics and if they come into contact with one another via landfill consolidation or some such then they may share those mechanisms with each other and eventually plastic will just rot like wood. Just a matter of time for evolution to figure out anyway but landfills just accelerate it. The immediate danger of that is actually not plastics rotting eventually. The problem is that when that happens, landfills will become methane time bombs. It's fine if something rots in an aerobic environment but when you take away air things can get dangerous.

#

Plastic being able to rot is actually a plus from an environmental standpoint

#

Might be cool to build a 2m x 2m x 2m hang printer in a frame that sits in the corner of my lab with a dual nozzle design, 0.4mm and 1.2mm

#

Could print some freaking HUGE stuff with that and using both nozzles in tandem could do it quick but with a nice detailed outer layer

#

And use the large nozzle for big structural interior bits

#

Then the small one for the details

#

Might just do a 1.5m x 1.5m x 1.5m frame as I have limited space... Or I could build it in one if the empty spaces on the filament extension machine wall

The final report, published in 1980 as an internal working document (3), concluded that “not only does completely demineralised water (distillate) have unsatisfactory organoleptic properities, but it also has a definite adverse influence on the animal and human organism”. After evaluating the available health, organoleptic, and other information, the team recommended that demineralised water contain 1.) a minimum level for dissolved salts (100 mg/L), bicarbonate ion (30 mg/L), and calcium (30 mg/L); 2.) an optimum level for total dissolved salts (250-500 mg/L for chloride-sulfate water and 250-500 mg/L for bicarbonate water); 3.) a maximum level for alkalinity (6.5 meq/l), sodium (200 mg/L), boron (0.5 mg/L), and bromine (0.01 mg/L). Some of these recommendations are discussed in greater detail in this chapter.

Apple has a pretty strong ecosystem, so long as you stay in it...

I thought the idea was that users and vendors operated in some kind of intentional collaboration

at most, the collaboration is between Apple and people who sell apps on the App Store. Definitely not meaningful user participation, from what little I know (because I stay out of it)

tardy badger
#

Eh, that point is pretty subjective

#

I worked as an apple care rep and the process is super interactive

#

Unless you’ve worked “inside apple” you simply don’t understand how important user interactions are

delicate stream
#

The Apple ecosystem can make things super easy. Like, I got an iPad Mini, and it automatically got stuff like my passcode, WiFi info, Apple ID info, etc. from my phone when I started setting it up

tardy badger
#

Yeah, plus sharing that information with contacts if they visit and have apple devices

When my family comes I can easily get them on my Wifi

delicate stream

And you can answer on any Apple device you own if you have an iPhone

tardy badger
#

Also a good point

#

wooden schooner

@tardy badger yeah, that makes sense. Apple operates an empire structured around the idea that one day, it will be the only player in the industry, and tries to imitate that ideal to the extent possible in the present day

tardy badger
#

I have an iPhone 12 Mini which is honestly super nice compared to price point

It's also not as bad when you're keeping a phone for 3-4 years. It's insane for yearly replacement, assuming you don't trade it in (I keep my phones forever)

tardy badger

i'm glad that the argument for iPhone vs Android is more coming down to preference rather than "you can't do this on iPhone" or "Androids get way too many viruses and zero day exploits"

Then I can patch the holes in the metal walls and it's just a waiting game for this dang rain to clear up... It had been raining nearly nonstop for a week which I should be used to by now because this happens multiple times every fall but every time it puts a damper on my plans lol

#

Once it's clear I can patch the holes in the roof and then I wait for the floor to dry so I can seal the seams with silicone and by then I just need to figure out how to finance insulation and sheetrock and I can get to the point of moving in lab equipment and building work spaces

#

I may even build a 2 tier 3D printer space so I can fit twice as many printers as I have... Just in case designing a new one takes up half the spaces so I can still print with the ones I have

#

Probably have the more "permanent" printers at eye level and the workspace for building new ones on the desk

#

You know how there's a tiny home movement that people are getting in trouble for in a lot of places? Well I'm making a tiny lab and I'm not living in it so it's legal 😄

And I'm cramming as much generality into the capability of it that it will be the most useful 150 square feet I've ever seen

late fulcrum
#

I had read that you could build everything out of NAND gates, so I assumed that inside TTL chips were just collections of NAND gates to implement whatever function was required. It wasn't until years later that I discovered that the chips were much cleverer than that (an XOR gate only has 11 transistors, and a 13-input NAND gate is just a NAND gate: an entire TTL chip with only 4 transistors)

tardy badger
#

Haha, yeah

#

More often complex things we admire are an amalgamation of smaller well bundled simple things

late fulcrum

It turns out that the 8-input NAND gate uses the same silicon with different metallization, so the 13-emitter transistor only has 8 emitters used.

That’s why I’m always confused when people take lump sum payments on lottery winnings. You lose value taking the lump sum rather than taking an annuity.

#

But anyway, inflation sucks and most companies don’t care..

spice moss
#

not to mention the people start to ask for money as well if they know someone have got lots of money

tardy badger
#

The place I work is “supposedly” working on an equity increase for early career professionals. But given what I’ve seen for annual merit increases and the new college grad program.. I shouldn’t expect more than a 2% raise which still puts me below inflation

#

but now I can see it's just a weirdly distorted version of places I recognize

#

mostly my neighborhood

#

and my dreams are becoming a weirdly distorted version of reality

#

I might be losing sanity here

because sometimes it's hard to know when the dreams end and reality begins

#

the sun never shines in my dreams

#

it's always either night or overcast

quartz wren

Apparently that's normal for someone with a tumultuous mind... TIL

arctic peak
#

But also I assume that this year's Salary talks are going to be a blood bath.

#

The largest raise I have ever gotten was 6% and with inflation at 5.9%......

tardy badger
#

I got a 1.9% merit increase

#

The excuse we got for small raises was “well other companies didn’t get raises so be grateful”

arctic peak
#

Lol, I print out industry wide salary adjustment data and present it to my boss.

#

They gave that excuse to our production team two years ago.

#

It is really terrible that it usually is easier to make more money by moving companies than by being loyal

tardy badger
#

It’s really sad

#

My manager told me the best way to get an internal raise is to get an offer elsewhere and see if they’ll match

#

But I am not confident that the company I work for would match a $90k offer since they only view me as a recent grad with no experience despite all my previous technical experience

crystal ore
#

It's also generally considered dangerous to play that sort of game. There's the chance that they'll just say, "Wow, that's a great offer. Good luck, we're sorry to see you go..." and escort you out. Or they'll give you a counteroffer but put you on a "disloyal, expensive employee" mental list, first on the chopping block for the next layoff.

tardy badger
#

Yeah… it feels wrong to have to play that game but when costs of living and inflation is growing faster than paychecks, some people are left with no choice

wooden schooner
#

do managers really still think in terms of loyalty? Everything I've seen written about how today's workplace differs from previous generations says that the notion of loyalty, or of workplaces being like families, has gone out the window

lusty fossil
#

Workplaces were never families

wooden schooner
#

agree, of course. loyalty used to be a thing though

lusty fossil
#

For the younger folks, we saw our parents laid off 2-3 times in the last 20 years for no fault of their own because of nonsense games played with the economy. We're over loyalty

#

(Speaking only for myself of course haha)

wooden schooner
#

yeah (I think the stuff I've seen is mostly about more like 50 years ago)... regardless of whether loyalty used to be a thing, I was under the impression that today it very much is not a thing.

#

i.e., the company doesn't treat "loyal" employees better.

lusty fossil
#

I really like my workplace but if I got an offer for a lot more and they couldn't match, I'd strongly consider leaving

#

But I'm not trying to offer jobs to anyone happy with their current situation

#

Because I don't want to make a good thing potentially worse but I know once things can be profitable from one venture or another, it isn't hard to make a bad situation better

lusty fossil
#

The only way I gamble: playing the game of "Is this supplier's chat support function garbage or not?" The stakes are my patience and sanity

quartz wren
#

I should design a CPU architecture that is also a CTF using cleverly implemented undocumented opcodes

#

Would need to figure out some kind of hardware simplification that allows all of the opcodes that are documented to function in a logical way, but if you break down the bit structure of each you can begin to understand how the actual hardware sees the instructions easily enough to construct undocumented opcodes using unlisted bit patterns

#

It would have to be a super simple documented set that gives enough examples of how the system is structured to allow informed guesses but not an outright brute force solution

#

But make the undocumented opcode set much larger than the documented set by approximately a square growth rate if you were to graph the number along any given axis if functionality within the full opcode set space

#

Who wants to explore a potentially infinite opcode set space with just a few leads to go on? Sounds like a puzzle game to me

#

The fun part is that as you discover new undocumented opcodes you could give them mnemonics and write your own assembly language along the way

#

Then when you load up code others have written it will only let you load it if you have discovered those opcodes and it will convert it to your mnemonics so you aren't confused

#

But here's the fun part

lusty fossil
#

sounds expensive, even if you value your time at $0 per hour

quartz wren
#

I can probably find a way to make an opcode set that is capable of having arbitrary bit lengths for opcodes... So if you want more advanced stuff you will have to figure out how the encoding works to add more bits and see what kind of things they do

I forgot that metal printing is expensive unless you make a ton of said part

quartz wren

Eventually I'm going to have an SLS printer

Though I'm going to make a variant I like to call "SMDLS"

I'm thinking mainly ceramic and copper

delicate stream

Pixel 6 Pro weeeee

burnt tendon
#

Yah, I wouldn't wax poetic about the price.

#

I think there's a whole world of truly interesting things to be done with 3D printers, tho.

#

The problem, I think, with SLS printing of metal is just that it's really really really hard to make that not a giant sparkler ready to go off with the metal powder and all and so a lot of places have fairly strict regulations on those things.

#

But, like, it's probably ripe for opportunity for someone to cook up a good FDM-but-with-a-MIG-welder setup that hits the right set of problem spaces for home such that you just have the usual MIG welding hazards that we all know how to deal with.

#

And, likweise, SMDLS and other... dono... next level stuff... sounds really cool because it's less "Maybe we just need to get a 6-axis CNC mill cheaper" and more literally-impossible-on-a-CNC-mill.

quartz wren
#

I mean... I'll have lab space to experiment with metal printing soon

#

Knew that concrete tabletop would be handy for something

quartz wren
#

I need to get the door on my lab but I have to trim it first

#

I want as wide of a door as the framing will allow so we intentionally picked a door with wide solid beams around the side that was bigger than we needed to make that easy

#

For the storage side of the building we went with a door that is smaller than the frame but big enough to be usable and we'll just frame it in as needed

#

I also need to put up a panel on one of the window bays that we didn't have enough to fill with the widows we had, which will also be where the outside light comes through

#

I also need to rerun some lighting wire so we can add an internal door between the sections in the future

#

Just one of the wires needs to be replaced, the other one is going the same distance, just the one to the switch actually needs replacing

#

But from the switch to the light is going the same distance just along a different path

#

Just have to make sure to shut off the breaker before I start working on it
