that's quite a gem.
Would love to tinker with it.

#

i wonder what they used in the 70's to do cg for animation.

#

and that makes me wonder if there is a timeline for CG accomplishments.

#

like where did cg become viable for film, what was the tech they used and where are we now.
would be a good youtube vid

#

Fact anime was using cg for ages

#

i wonder if there is a samurai among us knowledgeable to shed light.

#

Look up "Scanimate" for some interesting stuff. When they made the film "Escape from New York", computer graphics were pretty primitive, so they just built a 3D model, outlined the buildings with glow tape, and used that for the "wireframe" displays.

Remember when it was? The original started in 2003

#

Brotherhood was 2009

wooden schooner

It had already come out I think

delicate stream

So could have been either

wooden schooner
#

Yeah I suppose so

delicate stream
#

I think they're the same style and all, so not sure you can tell them apart with a simple screenshot...

wooden schooner
#

Are they different -- ah, was going to ask that

#

I definitely remember hearing "lol, the show came out faster than the manga so they just winged it" but I don't remember if that was referring to the one they were watching or some other one

delicate stream
#

Yeah, FMA caught up with the manga at episode 28, then went it's own direction. Brotherhood follows the entire manga to the finish, but basically condensed the first part of the story and focused on the formerly unshown parts from what I understand

late fulcrum
#

So many things the anime started out of synch with the manga, and then like you said sometimes they went in different directions too.

delicate stream
#

It does get hard to follow the manga when it isn't finished yet XD

late fulcrum
#

Oh, that's the truth. I keep meaning to find out if several stories continued.

delicate stream

I wish I had more time

Oh yeah, me too. I did get more time in my basement lab during the pandemic, with the result I had told you about of the pile of now working, but still obsolete oscilloscopes. I'm rather tempted to just send you the one you liked, but I want to nail down that last issue where the trace fades out every so often.

delicate stream
#

Hehe, that would be awesome... But I'm sure you can get it working perfectly far better and more efficiently than I could XD I only have a glancing knowledge of scopes

late fulcrum

This one is a strong candidate for simplest scope ever made: it only has four vacuum tubes, and one of those is the rectifier and another one is the CRT.

delicate stream

Ohhh, nice

The rectifier and CRT are the only 2 tubes, and there are only 13 components total.

#

Halp, Feather no serial

delicate stream
#

Feather serial on different port now? Weird computer weird

quartz wren
#

Soooo I'm ditching the pressurized lab idea

#

But I'm still going to set it up as a positive pressure clean room

#

I decided to prioritize the fume hood design and that makes the pressure vessel impractical

#

I may make a section of the room that serves this purpose but I'll probably just do it on the lab I'll build when I get my own piece of property

#

But on the positive I will have 1.5 fume hoods and I'm utilizing the space to its maximum for storage and such

#

(1.5 because the cabinet below the fume hood is where the fume hood will draw air from, plus they will share a door that slides between them and latches at the top (where the main fume hood is) while also turning on the fan, but also have a switch to turn it on if the door is open. So since the air is pulled from the cabinet below, it can act as a secondary fume hood while something more noxious is fuming above with a closed door)

#

Then there will be a desk made of literal concrete reinforced with a steel structure inside. The piece has been weathered a bit but has held up well over the years... Initially it was just extra concrete we needed to figure out what to do with lol

#

It'll be held up by steel fence sections

#

Probably framed into the structure

#

(similar to the way I framed in the support for the fume hood)

#

Then I'll probably coat that with epoxy

tardy badger
#

Today I learned that they use EPS foam in building roads

#

Basically styrofoam lol

lusty fossil
#

I've seen foam beneath structural concrete before, but not beneath roads, interesting

#

Who has the apology card for mother earth? I need to sign

quartz wren
#

Actually that gives me an idea about how to interface the concrete with the steel fences... If I put foam between it should prevent wear from metal on concrete contact with vibration

#

And the easy solution is something like weather stripping foaming

#

Just something to take the slight shifts without wearing either material

tardy badger
#

Also learning about VHB tape

#

today: figuring out where I'm putting cat-5 in my walls

#

I'm thinking several sections of wall with bundles of 3 cables into each side of a patch panel

#

something that just has ports I can make custom patch cables between for rewiring the room network on a whim

#

but I have to map out where the desks are going first

#

would it be a good idea to have some ports inside the fume hood?

#

(in case I want network enabled sensors that still function when the door is shut)

#

probably just would want some kind of shield over the panel unless in use

late fulcrum
#

I put ports everywhere that I can think of. That may be why my basement looks like this.

quartz wren
#

I just need to find punch block port panels for free or cheap

#

I'll be setting the wiring and the panels into the walls behind the sheetrock

#

Erm

#

The panel will come up flush with the sheetrock

#

And have a front plate

#

If I can't find any punch block ones I'll just repurpose blocks of ports from routers or something and solder to them

#

And just cut out holes from face plates normally used as an electrical box cap if the box isn't being used

Hi, please is this a good battery ?

#

I want to pack 27 PCs into 36V 12 Ah but I don’t know if it’s a good battery or not

delicate stream
#

Does it have any other markings? I don't see what jumps out as a brand.... and 4200mAh for a single cell sounds sus

thick wind
#

Define good.

lost rampart
delicate stream
#

I would be highly suspect of any 18650 cell marked over 2200mAh -- not sure they really make them larger than that

#

I know 2200mAh is incredibly common

thick wind
#

I think 2200mAh is probably the lower end of the spectrum...

#

4200 is a bit on the high side, but I know of a couple reputable 18650s with 3000+

#

The ones that have suspiciously high ratings usually have some sort of tradeoff, usually lower max current or thermal issues at higher draw.

delicate stream
#

I have 500mAh 18650 cells XD but I may also just be old

delicate stream
#

Like one "20,000mAh 18650 cell" I saw one time...

thick wind
#

Oh yeah those are totally not true haha

delicate stream
#

Durr, I forgot about 2600mAh being pretty common now. But see, the highest on there is 3500mAh -- so jumping up over 4000mAh sounds sus still

thick wind
#

Oh yeah. That would have to be some straight lithium ion to get to that energy density, and that is not a battery I would bundle that many of together so tightly...

delicate stream
#

It also just... doesn't look as nice as the premium cells... I just have bad vibes from it

#

Also usually it'll say SAMSUNG or PANASONIC or whoever on it

thick wind
#

It's just a cheap chinese LiPo in an 18650 form factor. Probably fine to use as a single cell, but I'd be wary of trying to use too many of them at once.

delicate stream
#

Yeah

#

I would also expect a lower actual capacity

#

But you can test that

quartz wren
#

Okay so I think the fume hood will get its own set of IO connections

#

Probably like 6-12 cables into a panel inside that breaks out to panels around the room

#

That way each panel around the room has one set of 4 twisted pairs to the fume hood

#

Well, 4 or 8 depending on whether I do 6 or 12 cables

#

Because there are going to be 6 boxes around the room

#

I'm thinking instead of 3 cables between each pair of boxes I'll do 2 cables between each pair and 2 cables to each box from the fume hood

#

Then it's still 6 ports per box but 2 of them are direct to a fume hood port rather than patching between wall sections

#

And 4 of them are split up between 2 going one direction in the wall and 2 going the other

#

(to the next set of boxes)

#

This way I can patch between areas of my desk easily and have every area of the desk able to patch into the fume hood for sensor connections

#

Or if I needed 6 cables directly to the fume hood from one patch in point, I can patch the other ones back into the box they come out of to route back to the panel I want from two of the other panels (adjacent ones are easiest)

#

Anyway the idea is modularity to the maximum

#

Well, not maximum because of budget constraints but to a good compromise for the material available

challenge an AI to program a model for a real life phenomenon

#

for example, give it an interactable thing & some way to interact with it, then challenge the AI to recreate it

quartz wren
#

Isn't this how the AI driven walking stuff was done?

late fulcrum
#

That's basically how a generative adversarial network works

quartz wren
#

They gave a virtual environment, a set of virtual actuators, and then let it figure out how to get from point a to b

#

Though I believe the example I'm thinking of used genetic algorithms on a bunch of parallel randomized start points in a NN space

#

And bred the best performers

late fulcrum
#

Many of the solutions end up exploiting flaws in the simulation

quartz wren
#

Yes but the one I was looking at had 2 variations, one without signal propagation delay for input and actuation and one with it. The one with it more often produced a more natural movement

#

Which makes sense because that kind of forces it to have some fluidity to its model as to what to do next because the input isn't instantaneous and the output isn't either

#

A squirrel just tried to make entrance to my lab through one of the few remaining openings that needs to be paneled (was going to be a window but we ran out)

#

And I walked up next to it and said "you can hang out for a sec but don't get any ideas of living here in the winter" then it looked around trying to find a good escape route and jumped to a branch nearby

#

I think I might try to make some squirrel friends this winter...

#

Make them a little house that's only accessible from tree branches (so my cat doesn't get any ideas about an easy unearned dinner) with a heater duct from my lab to keep it at late summer /early fall overcast day temp (about 50-60F or so) with a little grain silo style feeder so I don't have to get up close to them to give them food

delicate stream
#

Squirrels are cute, but can be danger

quartz wren
#

I'm sure I can hold my own against a rascally squirrel, it's the bigger stuff like raccoons and skunks that worry me... And even a raccoon... Sure I'd get cut up but the raccoon would not be around to ask its side of the story.

delicate stream
#

It's more a concern of disease -- they could carry a number of potentially life-threatening or deadly things, and all it can take is a bite or scratch sometimes to get infected. Just gotta be careful

quartz wren
#

Oh. Infection. Yeah I'm pretty resistant to that.

delicate stream
#

probs not against rabies

quartz wren
#

And I so my best to clean things up to avoid it after contact to potential infectants

#

Yeah rabies is bad, but we have hospitals with treatments for it

#

Oof

#

Guess I forgot about the whole "hospitals not taking patients" in a lot of places thing...

#

Well, I'm current on my tetanus shots at least and I found out during that same instance that rats can't carry rabies

delicate stream
#

I mean, even without plague, better to NOT have to go to the hospital and get a rabies series... very very not fun. Best to just avoid any potential infections at all, resilient immune system or not

quartz wren
#

I got bit, went in to be checked out because fear of rabies... Turns out that's not a valid fear with rats, but tetanus is

delicate stream
#

Many bad things can come in adorable packages

quartz wren
#

Yeah, this rat was carried inside the house alive by my cat, who was playing goalie at the door when we tried to shoo it outside

#

Had no choice but to pick it up to move it

#

Something else I found out about rats that day

#

They share a trait with owls

#

They can rotate their head 180 degrees

delicate stream
#

:O

#

hax

quartz wren
#

Tried to hold it so it couldn't bite me and it just twisted around at the neck and bit me anyway

#

It pulled haxx I pulled haxx

#

I grabbed a dust mask and scooped it up in that

#

Then I put it outside and immediately went to the hospital

#

And when I got there I said I was worried about rabies because I was bit by a wild rat and they said "rats can't carry rabies, but have you had a tetanus shot recently?"

#

To which I shrugged, they stuck me, and I got some antibiotics

#

That was a crappy week... Literally

#

Had an accident while at the beach with a friend

#

'twas rather uh... Unpleasant

delicate stream
#

Protip: if you can take whatever animal bit you to be tested [without risk of further injury] do so, especially for things that CAN carry rabies -- they can test the animal and see if it has whatever they're worried about. For things that can carry rabies, if they find it's negative, they don't do rabies shots. If they can't test and it's a species that can carry rabies, they usually do the shots as a precaution

wooden schooner
#

That uh, sounds like investing

#

But loans are not worth it

delicate stream
#

I mean... as long as you're reporting profits for taxes, not illegal? Just risky because if your investments don't pan out, you could lose money... not really the best idea if you're not flush with cash XD

wooden schooner

The interest would outstrip your investment returns typically, that's how loan sharks make money

delicate stream

wooden schooner
#

Taking out a payday loan to invest is like burning money

delicate stream

Yeah

lusty fossil
#

With a low enough APR, an index fund should outperform no?

tardy badger
#

I mean, typical rate of return for an index fund is ~7%

#

Typical interest rate on a car is 3-5%

#

But then you have to pay for maintenance, insurance, etc… it could easily eat through your returns

quartz wren
#

think I have enough Cat-5 running into my fume hood?

#

(for remote control and monitoring of experiments with the door shut)

there's 2 cables going to each of 6 panels spaced around the room

I have plenty of cable for it

thick wind
#

...why are you running it in the fume hood?

delicate stream
#

... That is a good question

quartz wren
#

for automation and monitoring of experiments with the door shut

thick wind
#

Don't people usually just run it in the walls?

quartz wren
#

it is in the walls

#

it's just terminating in the fume hood

#

then each wall panel will also have 2 cables between it and each of its adjacent wall panels

#

hold up lemme get a few more pics to show the full setup

#

And by "wall panel" I mean junction box with a face plate

lusty fossil

Are you being careful about local codes?

quartz wren

Yeah and for electrical I'm having someone experienced do it and show me

lusty fossil

THAT is a good idea

quartz wren
#

Luckily my dad has wired up a lot of buildings in his day

#

No electrical fires to date that I know of, and I'm pretty sure I'd know

#

I mean technically I know how to do it but I don't want to risk my lab as my very first solo project all the way through for running electrical

delicate stream
#

quartz wren

#

Running a sub-circuit on its own breaker off of the circuit that runs to the storage building

#

Which isn't so much a building as a permanent shipping container

#

Only reason it meets code with as large as it is lol

#

My dad says he might upgrade the electrical to that whole storage system to bring it from a 15A breaker to a 20A

#

He literally said he wants me to be able to run a microwave out there lol

#

(without tripping the breaker because the deep freezer in the storage building decided to kick on during a heating cycle)

#

(yes I know the pump doesn't pull much but inrush can cause an issue if already under load)

delicate stream
#

Yeah, microwave is like 66% of your 15A budget, lol

quartz wren
#

Yeah, that number seems right after a bit of thumb twiddling on the calculator

#

Whereas on a 20A breaker it's only 58.3%

#

(ish)

delicate stream
#

I need a new microwave

quartz wren
#

Which is why often microwaves have their own breaker in a kitchen if you've got a space designed for the microwave

delicate stream
#

GFCI!

#

GFIC?

#

Whichever order it is, lol

late fulcrum
#

My microwave broke, but I just fixed it and kept going.

delicate stream
#

oof

quartz wren
# delicate stream GFCI!

Nah GFCI is its own thing for when the outlet is intended to be operated near water. It stands for "ground fault circuit interrupt"

#

I meant actually on their own separate breaker

late fulcrum
#

Typically all kitchen outlets are considered to be "near water" and should be GFCI. A separate breaker for a microwave makes sense, as microwaves draw a fair amount of power.

quartz wren
#

Yeah kitchen, outdoors, bathrooms

#

Outdoor needs a shield too

#

(at least per regulation)

wooden schooner
#

I learned about GFCI via a social media post from a new mother: "Oh, you don't know what a GFCI reset is? You will."

quartz wren
#

Heh

#

I remember the age when I pushed all the buttons I could find

delicate stream
#

Yeah, all our kitchen outlets are GFCI

quartz wren
#

"a button labeled 'test'? Wonder what it does..." click

#

"well that was uneventful" leaves tripped GFCI to go play

#

Now I just push all the buttons that I don't know the purpose of to see what they do... I guess it's the same mindset I've just learned what more and more buttons do

#

So I never really grew out of the button pushing phase

#

The fume hood being a prime example. No reason to plug it into an outlet when the wires already point toward the wall coming out of the fan

lusty fossil
#

Yeah none of this is to code

quartz wren
#

I can wire it straight into a switch with an override MOSFET coming from a limit switch

#

(for when the door shuts)

#

And with the wires going straight into a junction box in the wall

#

Hmmmmm

#

If I'm going to do that I should have another set of software controlled MOSFETs so I can have sensor feedback controlled venting

#

Though I suppose relays aren't a problem

#

I have a few chonkers

#

And I can do some more finessed logic with them using the normally open and normally closed contacts

#

So I can have the limit switch able to turn the fan on regardless of the switch position, but have software able to turn the fan on or off regardless of door or switch positions

#

All just using a hierarchy rather than feedback. The software doesn't need to care about the switch and door positions if it does a 3 state output with its floating state meaning "let the next priority level decide" and so on

#

Which can easily be done with relay logic and if I set it up right only needs one relay that actually switches the fan

#

So I can use little ones for the logic and a chonker for the fan switching

#

And I think I'll have 2 physical switches, one of which puts it in full manual override (which means that the other switch has direct fan control) or priority mode (which puts the physical switch at lowest priority)

#

And since I'm doing relay logic for that, I can use a less beefy switch since it'll be either 5 or 12 volt signaling up until the point of contact with the main relay

#

And yes I'm aware of flyback protection and such

#

Anyway that is how I'll do the fan switching. 2 physically switched modes, one very basic and ignoring all other non-physical input, and one a bit more complex that prioritizes a software signal, then a limit switch on the door, then the physical override switch

#

And for the switches I definitely want them LED lit so I can tell at a glance what mode it should be in

#

Oh also for the record the fume hood is getting an interior too

#

Probably sheet metal riveted into place, I just have to figure out how the cabling and airflow needs to happen through the space between that paneling and the outer case

#

Might use short self tap metal screws I'm not sure... Rivets are less dangerous during servicing though

#

Just harder to disassemble for service

#

Although if I find it's too hard to service with the rivets I can dril them out and replace them with screws later

#

But there's too many holes in the main housing that would be annoying to deal with so I'm just going to make a box within a box

#

Actually, there's no holes in the sides... I just need a floor and a back panel

#

And that can be made as one piece

quartz wren
#

My brand is "apocalypse status but it works"

#

Yes I will seal the edges

#

And pretty up the ouchy edges

#

I'll use the rectangular space where the handle was for at least some of the RJ-45 ports to terminate the 12 Cat5e cables running into the back

#

And I'll add a panel over the cables too

#

And this bottom plate is cleverly angled to pool all liquids to the center and then pour them out the front notch

#

Where I'll have a waste disposal drain

#

Yes kind of not great to have it in front of the work area but imagine the cleaning hassle if it were at the back

#

I'll just cover it with some grating

#

In fact... Why don't I put a grate over the whole thing that's level

#

Then if a spill happens I have drainage to a waste container but I won't have unnecessary tips of containers due to the floor being out of level to accommodate drainage

#

Because the floor will be a drop in grate that's leveled by knobs like a 3D printer bed and the bottom panel will be for drainage only

#

Either that or I can make a truss structure to hold 3D printed grate sections in PETG

#

But I just imagined the disposal nightmare and no.

#

Because thoroughly cleaning them is out of the question

#

Too many crevices

#

Anyway I'm really happy with the progress I'm making on the lab

#

Im going to have so much desk space

#

I'm doing a lab desk made of concrete across from the fume hood along the interior wall that's 4 feet long, a wraparound desk along the back wall around to the door on the other side, and a crap load of shelves with grooves in the front wall for a movable ladder

#

I will be able to store everything out here accessibly

#

That's huge for me

#

Because if I can't get to something I effectively don't have it. If I don't have something I need in a crucial moment it can lead to a meltdown

#

And often a setback of months to years on the project in times past, however I've noticed more maturity in that regard for myself of being able to more quickly pick myself up and put myself back together after a rough moment and not dwell on it

#

It's a hard thing to do when that's your (previously untamed) nature

the looseness of cooking techniques has always irked me, and lead me to like baking much more than cooking

wooden schooner
# lusty fossil what's a click vs impression?

For a search engine, a "click" would be when someone clicks the link to your page, and an "impression" would be when someone is served a search results page that contains a link to your page. So a click implies an impression, but an impression doesn't imply a click.

lusty fossil

delicate stream

quartz wren

How else will people know about the games users make other than word of mouth?

#

Also nobody makes money directly from the ads themselves in my model. They are free to the user advertising, I don't make money on clicks, but users are free to set the price of their game so advertising generates revenue if and only if it convinces you to buy the game

#

Not sure how I want to go about it but I want to figure out how to anonymise and customize preference space entirely. Don't want ads? Sure I actually support that. There will be a pop up that's opt-in to enable in-platform advertising for those who want to get game suggestions

send any complaints to /dev/null 😛

#

I've always heard that in a playful context, in case that has other connotations

quartz wren
#

I mean in the right context that could be an incredibly poor choice of things to say to someone

#

But mostly I've seen it playfully

#

For instance in a shared server environment using an internal mail service that can pipe to /dev/null for testing

lusty fossil
#

I def meant it playfully, but I'll reconsider using it in the future

quartz wren
#

I mean out of extremely specific contexts it can only really be construed as playful as far as I have seen

#

But you never know what someone's past experiences are and whether someone has said something like that to them non-jokingly before

#

Which may bring back unpleasant things for them

#

Not that I'm the thought police or anything just things to consider

#

I know I've been set off by things that in most contexts would be seen as purely joking including by the tone of what was said

#

For instance I hopped on a voice chat with someone I actually like most days (in a group with a few other people) a while back and I had just woken up, was stressing about money, and people were complaining about bosses and I made some joke about my boss with the punchline being that they are imaginary. The person comes back, completely jokingly and says "get a job!" which I laughed off and returned with "I am a job" because it actually kind of hurt coming from this person and I was trying to play it cool... Then they come back with "you're work if that's what you mean..." also (from their perspective jokingly) and I just immediately disconnected and had a straight anxiety meltdown and went into a pretty bad state for the remainder of the day... Yes, on me for being over-sensitive but at the same time sensitivity goes both ways and if you lack any in what you dish out, you may get an over correction as a response

#

But employment is a sensitive subject for me. I can't work for someone else. I've tried. Many times. My bipolar gets in the way every time and what employers want I can't deliver because of it. So I'm trying to become gainfully self employed but the struggle from near the bottom is real...

#

So things others may see as joking with regard to that subject I take very seriously

#

Just a tangential example of when something said jokingly can be taken seriously with good reason and just a reminder to be aware of context when you say things 😄

#

Because anything in the wrong context can be very detrimental

#

Water? Necessary to survive, but if it goes the wrong direction by just few degrees it has a chance to kill you.

#

People say intent is the important factor behind what you say and do but I say it's context because that determines the entire outcome of any given set of actions.

#

Intent is important to cope with context but it isn't the root

#

Going back to the water analogy, if you intend to take a drink but the context under which you intend to do so causes the water to go the wrong way for whatever reason, your intentions are irrelevant.

tardy badger

That’s an interesting experience

#

For me a large order is spending $500 in parts

lusty fossil

I forget that what's BIG money to me is nothing to a sufficiently large company

lusty fossil
#

All this nonchalance about ordering has led me to believe that the raise I want in the future is totally possible

#

Or at least get $.XX per mile on my commute

late fulcrum
#

I actually managed that once. I was on the road a few hours a day and managed to beat the contracts department into paying me mileage. That extra money bought me a nice car.

lusty fossil
#

what would be an ideal amount to get? I get ~31 mpg and gas is 4.25-450 per gallon here

#

And I commute 40 miles

#

Wait I'm just setting up a 5th grade math problem

#

I can do this

I think I got the then-current federal allowance, which was a bit over 50 cents a mile.

I'm just concerned because I didn't get my mom's dealmaking skills

Apparently the information that the little bumpy tabs on the electrical boxes is a guide for how far to stick out from the stud never made its way to me before I started putting in the electrical boxes... Needless to say I finished putting them all in before this was pointed out...

#

Luckily it's only like 10 or so

#

But the two gang boxes are going to be annoying to pull out because of how the nails angle...

#

So I'm taking a break after redoing the easy ones

#

And once I get them out, they are annoying to nail in so I may take the nails out entirely and use screws on those ones

#

Also I'm going to just hook the fume hood fan up to a switch on the wall for now and later I can remove the switch, stick a power relay inside the box, and have an external switching logic box on the wall. Still want to figure out an outlet or plug strip inside the fume hood though

#

Probably will just run a plug strip with a long cable inside of it since I'll be mostly just running 3D printers in it, then have the cable go through flex conduit out of the fume hood

#

And make a flip guard for it to prevent some amount of vapor ingress destroying the terminals... Unless they have outdoor plugstrips with sealed door shields like outdoor GFCI covers

#

That would be ideal

quartz wren
#

Okay most of the electrical wire is in

#

14 gauge for lighting / fume hood fan, 12 gauge for everything else

#

Just have 2 more wires to run, then I need to install 4 switches, 3 light sockets, and like... 10 outlets I think

#

6 of those outlet blocks are for my side, 4 for my parents', which means I'll have 12 outlets without needing any plug strips

#

Apparently sheet rock and insulation could be a while because funds

So full completion is not until winterish probably

This should be distinguished from temperatures expressed as negative numbers on non-thermodynamic Celsius or Fahrenheit scales, which are nevertheless higher than absolute zero.

When it comes to impulse-driven projects vs purpose-driven projects, the motivation for the latter is much more reliable...

#

I impulse-bought too many electronic components...

delicate stream
#

Basically all logistics of everything is on fire because of a number of factors. Shortages are being caused by lack of raw materials or people to obtain them, as well as transport them. Power is at a premium in some places, so places that have materials might not be able to make things with them due to rolling industrial blackouts. When they do make things, they might not be able to get someone to collect, or the items get stuck at sending ports, or on ships in containers, or at receiving ports, warehouses… everything is ahhh

Well, allergies are tricky... I can tell you that anyone with an allergy like mine [deadly peanut allergy] will avoid the entire box if one kind has the allergen. Food preferences and some dietary issues it can be less strict -- like, some folks with gluten allergies or Celiac disease can't eat anything that TOUCHED gluten, others just can't directly eat it. Lactose is usually not something contact matters for. Vegan folks may or may not care if there were non-vegan donuts in the box with the vegan donuts. Probs safe bet would be get some vegan and some not, try to avoid major allergens where possible, and if it's not a hassle have two boxes. Make sure the boxes are marked for whatever possible allergens or dietary preferences people may want to know about -- I can tell you it's painful to have to try to call the place that they came from to find out if I can eat a donut and not die, so it would be immensely kind of you to have all that information readily available for your coworkers.
