no idea what that is but it has to be cool.
Pretty
if my dad saw that he would be like "we build wireless tower here"
I can almost see my house from there! Great view of Utah Lake and Eagle Mountain
It's a Silicon Graphics workstation, the stack of boards on the right are the "Graphics Pipeline", or what you'd call a GPU these days.
that's quite a gem.
Would love to tinker with it.
i wonder what they used in the 70's to do cg for animation.
and that makes me wonder if there is a timeline for CG accomplishments.
like where did cg become viable for film, what was the tech they used and where are we now.
would be a good youtube vid
Fact anime was using cg for ages
i wonder if there is a samurai among us knowledgeable to shed light.
Look up "Scanimate" for some interesting stuff. When they made the film "Escape from New York", computer graphics were pretty primitive, so they just built a 3D model, outlined the buildings with glow tape, and used that for the "wireframe" displays.
haha
checking now

amazingly simple
oh boy this brings back so many memories
Good haha
that's the first shooter I ever played through to the end
and I justified it to my parents that it wasn't a killing game because I'm just sending them back to their dimension
I think it’s still free on Steam for the HD release
frantically searches for a piece of his childhood
oh
apparently yelling in excitement is spam
even though it was literally 4 words
Oop
I binged the end of Fullmetal Alchemist last night, should I start Brotherhood right away? Or wait?
I think I’mma wait
I’m of no help here, I don’t indulge in most anime
I watched One Piece, and Zoids, and whatnot as a kid
On toonami
I think Zoids was on boomerang though
Well, you should watch FMA, lol
One Piece got weird after I stopped watch it lol
I haven’t watched that yet
you wouldn't think flat cable glands would be that hard to source, but digikey has nary a sign
I think the FMA I watched other people watch in college was Brotherhood?
It was good, whatever it was
Scary though
It had already come out I think
So could have been either
Yeah I suppose so
I think they're the same style and all, so not sure you can tell them apart with a simple screenshot...
Are they different -- ah, was going to ask that
I definitely remember hearing "lol, the show came out faster than the manga so they just winged it" but I don't remember if that was referring to the one they were watching or some other one
Yeah, FMA caught up with the manga at episode 28, then went it's own direction. Brotherhood follows the entire manga to the finish, but basically condensed the first part of the story and focused on the formerly unshown parts from what I understand
So many things the anime started out of synch with the manga, and then like you said sometimes they went in different directions too.
It does get hard to follow the manga when it isn't finished yet XD
Oh, that's the truth. I keep meaning to find out if several stories continued.
I wish I had more time
I keep hoping to build the right "Future Gadget" to get exactly that: more time. Which reminds me, "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" is still on my to-watch list.
Oh yeah, me too. I did get more time in my basement lab during the pandemic, with the result I had told you about of the pile of now working, but still obsolete oscilloscopes. I'm rather tempted to just send you the one you liked, but I want to nail down that last issue where the trace fades out every so often.
Hehe, that would be awesome... But I'm sure you can get it working perfectly far better and more efficiently than I could XD I only have a glancing knowledge of scopes
This one is a strong candidate for simplest scope ever made: it only has four vacuum tubes, and one of those is the rectifier and another one is the CRT.
Heh, not the winner, though. That dubious honor may belong to the National CRM: https://people.ohio.edu/postr/bapix/Nat_CRM.htm
Ohhh, nice
The rectifier and CRT are the only 2 tubes, and there are only 13 components total.
Wow
Anyone need a kidney? I’m selling mine to cover the costs of healthcare for my kids and wife.
If you need me, I’ll be avoiding the doctor because I can’t afford any additional medical bills (or upcoming student loans coming out of deferment)
I could use a kidney. What is your MHC phenotype?
A train wreck
I’m not a good donor due in part to my parents being exposed to mad cow back in the mid/late 80s
🙂
I’ll take an arm
I’m also apparently predisposed to hemochromatosis
And a carrier for PKD
And Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome
Oof
And I thought I was a mess!
I just have unidentified pain everywhere
That too

I got lucky, most of my debilitating/complicating problems have gotten better with age as my immune system seems to have come to terms with its environment
does anyone know if you can recycle a brass mailbox key? USPS had to replace mine and now I have this orphan key
in the United States
cali specifically
The local recycling depot here does have a scrap-metal bin, for example.
hmm, so I'll save it for when I go to the dump with all my poorly designed learning experience boards
surprised they didn't want the key back
the lock itself was busted, so the key is useless
pretty sure they took a drill to the mailbox
the blanks for PO box keys are generally restricted blanks that are on contract between USPS and the key vendor, is my understanding
ah makes sense
so they are generally secretive about it
but, you know, what are they going to do. "want it back" and "get it back" are very different things
You could give it away to someone who collects keys
Lots of people do (artists, locksport enthusiasts, people who like shiny things, etc.)
magpies?
I don't live near any unfortunately
You gotta be kidney.
So now i know why people who have a proper check source send antique geiger counters out to labs to get them calibrated instead of doing it themselves, with a CDV-700 anyways
There’s only about 30 degrees of rotation in the calibration nut
And you need to dial it in to a few tenths of a degree to be accurate
I spent about 10 minutes constantly adjusting and it’s still like .003 milliroentgens off
I think this is one of my favorite memes of all time... I can hear him laughing
Quality actor too.
Feather serial on different port now? Weird computer weird
Soooo I'm ditching the pressurized lab idea
But I'm still going to set it up as a positive pressure clean room
I decided to prioritize the fume hood design and that makes the pressure vessel impractical
I may make a section of the room that serves this purpose but I'll probably just do it on the lab I'll build when I get my own piece of property
But on the positive I will have 1.5 fume hoods and I'm utilizing the space to its maximum for storage and such
(1.5 because the cabinet below the fume hood is where the fume hood will draw air from, plus they will share a door that slides between them and latches at the top (where the main fume hood is) while also turning on the fan, but also have a switch to turn it on if the door is open. So since the air is pulled from the cabinet below, it can act as a secondary fume hood while something more noxious is fuming above with a closed door)
Then there will be a desk made of literal concrete reinforced with a steel structure inside. The piece has been weathered a bit but has held up well over the years... Initially it was just extra concrete we needed to figure out what to do with lol
It'll be held up by steel fence sections
Probably framed into the structure
(similar to the way I framed in the support for the fume hood)
Then I'll probably coat that with epoxy
Today I learned that they use EPS foam in building roads
How do you reduce the vertical stress of highway construction projects on the soil below? One solution is by using expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam blocks. Learn more.
Basically styrofoam lol
I've seen foam beneath structural concrete before, but not beneath roads, interesting
Who has the apology card for mother earth? I need to sign
Actually that gives me an idea about how to interface the concrete with the steel fences... If I put foam between it should prevent wear from metal on concrete contact with vibration
And the easy solution is something like weather stripping foaming
Just something to take the slight shifts without wearing either material
Also learning about VHB tape
No, I’m sorry watching modern marvels
VHB tape is used on that cool sail boat looking hotel in the UAE
The Burj Al Arab hotel
I kind of want to visit dubai, I wonder if it's possible to go on a reasonable budget
I wouldn’t go to Dubai
Modern slave haven
Ranks as one of the worst countries for modern slavery, human rights violations..
There are cool things there but I personally wouldn’t go
Even though I’m fascinated by the tallest building in the world
I agree with that, my addendum is too politicsy for this place but broad strokes I agree
Oof, I'd only heard about engineering things out of Dubai...
Plenty of the worst countries for modern slavery are in the region
That sucks
Yeah, many of the engineering wonders in those areas were built on severely exploited labor
Yup
Hundreds died for the railroads and the Hoover dam
And a lot of public works engineering projects
I would go there for tech showcase, but not go out and tourist around. no reason to pay more than minium to horrible country
A lot of Dubai was constructed by Asian pacific persons who were brought to Dubai with the promise of big wages and financial freedom, only to have their passports and legal documentation taken from them
And they weren’t actually paid all that well either so little money, families in many cases thinking family members were dead, etc..
I read an interesting article about shipping companies in that area just going belly up and essentially stranding workers on boats to the point of starvation. It’s really sad 😞
I wish we could just fix that
Same
😦
Unrelated... I upgraded my macropad I use for work from 4 to 8 keys
Double the utility
I was away from my dog for two days, when I got to my buddy's house to pick her up, she ran so fast across their fake grass towards me that she slipped, rolled all the way over, managed to course correct and slammed head first into me.
It was a great way to be greeted
Haha, graceful baby
she's anything but, and I love it
Hehe
today: figuring out where I'm putting cat-5 in my walls
I'm thinking several sections of wall with bundles of 3 cables into each side of a patch panel
something that just has ports I can make custom patch cables between for rewiring the room network on a whim
but I have to map out where the desks are going first
would it be a good idea to have some ports inside the fume hood?
(in case I want network enabled sensors that still function when the door is shut)
probably just would want some kind of shield over the panel unless in use
I put ports everywhere that I can think of. That may be why my basement looks like this.
I just need to find punch block port panels for free or cheap
I'll be setting the wiring and the panels into the walls behind the sheetrock
Erm
The panel will come up flush with the sheetrock
And have a front plate
If I can't find any punch block ones I'll just repurpose blocks of ports from routers or something and solder to them
And just cut out holes from face plates normally used as an electrical box cap if the box isn't being used
Powers out at work, drove 40 minutes to chill on my phone
Nice
I need to update my network, got a spool of CAT7
Futureproof. I got CAT5 when I was still on a 10M network; the CAT7 spool was only like 5% more than the CAT6 spool and offers higher future speeds. I would rather run cables now and not need to for like 10 years again, lol
It's cold but I can't run the space heater because the darn power is still out :( such suffering
How did our ancestors bear mild weather
Hi, please is this a good battery ?
I want to pack 27 PCs into 36V 12 Ah but I don’t know if it’s a good battery or not
Does it have any other markings? I don't see what jumps out as a brand.... and 4200mAh for a single cell sounds sus
Define good.
Reliable, efficient, limited risk of explosion, real capacity displayed
I’m asking to the seller
I would be highly suspect of any 18650 cell marked over 2200mAh -- not sure they really make them larger than that
I know 2200mAh is incredibly common
I think 2200mAh is probably the lower end of the spectrum...
4200 is a bit on the high side, but I know of a couple reputable 18650s with 3000+
The ones that have suspiciously high ratings usually have some sort of tradeoff, usually lower max current or thermal issues at higher draw.
I have 500mAh 18650 cells XD but I may also just be old
Or sometimes they're just not as high a capacity as they claim
Like one "20,000mAh 18650 cell" I saw one time...
Oh yeah those are totally not true haha
Durr, I forgot about 2600mAh being pretty common now. But see, the highest on there is 3500mAh -- so jumping up over 4000mAh sounds sus still
Oh yeah. That would have to be some straight lithium ion to get to that energy density, and that is not a battery I would bundle that many of together so tightly...
It also just... doesn't look as nice as the premium cells... I just have bad vibes from it
Also usually it'll say SAMSUNG or PANASONIC or whoever on it
It's just a cheap chinese LiPo in an 18650 form factor. Probably fine to use as a single cell, but I'd be wary of trying to use too many of them at once.
Okay so I think the fume hood will get its own set of IO connections
Probably like 6-12 cables into a panel inside that breaks out to panels around the room
That way each panel around the room has one set of 4 twisted pairs to the fume hood
Well, 4 or 8 depending on whether I do 6 or 12 cables
Because there are going to be 6 boxes around the room
I'm thinking instead of 3 cables between each pair of boxes I'll do 2 cables between each pair and 2 cables to each box from the fume hood
Then it's still 6 ports per box but 2 of them are direct to a fume hood port rather than patching between wall sections
And 4 of them are split up between 2 going one direction in the wall and 2 going the other
(to the next set of boxes)
This way I can patch between areas of my desk easily and have every area of the desk able to patch into the fume hood for sensor connections
Or if I needed 6 cables directly to the fume hood from one patch in point, I can patch the other ones back into the box they come out of to route back to the panel I want from two of the other panels (adjacent ones are easiest)
Anyway the idea is modularity to the maximum
Well, not maximum because of budget constraints but to a good compromise for the material available
random thought
challenge an AI to program a model for a real life phenomenon
for example, give it an interactable thing & some way to interact with it, then challenge the AI to recreate it
Isn't this how the AI driven walking stuff was done?
That's basically how a generative adversarial network works
They gave a virtual environment, a set of virtual actuators, and then let it figure out how to get from point a to b
Though I believe the example I'm thinking of used genetic algorithms on a bunch of parallel randomized start points in a NN space
And bred the best performers
Many of the solutions end up exploiting flaws in the simulation
Yes but the one I was looking at had 2 variations, one without signal propagation delay for input and actuation and one with it. The one with it more often produced a more natural movement
Which makes sense because that kind of forces it to have some fluidity to its model as to what to do next because the input isn't instantaneous and the output isn't either
A squirrel just tried to make entrance to my lab through one of the few remaining openings that needs to be paneled (was going to be a window but we ran out)
And I walked up next to it and said "you can hang out for a sec but don't get any ideas of living here in the winter" then it looked around trying to find a good escape route and jumped to a branch nearby
I think I might try to make some squirrel friends this winter...
Make them a little house that's only accessible from tree branches (so my cat doesn't get any ideas about an easy unearned dinner) with a heater duct from my lab to keep it at late summer /early fall overcast day temp (about 50-60F or so) with a little grain silo style feeder so I don't have to get up close to them to give them food
Squirrels are cute, but can be danger
I'm sure I can hold my own against a rascally squirrel, it's the bigger stuff like raccoons and skunks that worry me... And even a raccoon... Sure I'd get cut up but the raccoon would not be around to ask its side of the story.
It's more a concern of disease -- they could carry a number of potentially life-threatening or deadly things, and all it can take is a bite or scratch sometimes to get infected. Just gotta be careful
Oh. Infection. Yeah I'm pretty resistant to that.
probs not against rabies
And I so my best to clean things up to avoid it after contact to potential infectants
Yeah rabies is bad, but we have hospitals with treatments for it
Oof
Guess I forgot about the whole "hospitals not taking patients" in a lot of places thing...
Well, I'm current on my tetanus shots at least and I found out during that same instance that rats can't carry rabies
I mean, even without plague, better to NOT have to go to the hospital and get a rabies series... very very not fun. Best to just avoid any potential infections at all, resilient immune system or not
I got bit, went in to be checked out because fear of rabies... Turns out that's not a valid fear with rats, but tetanus is
Many bad things can come in adorable packages
Yeah, this rat was carried inside the house alive by my cat, who was playing goalie at the door when we tried to shoo it outside
Had no choice but to pick it up to move it
Something else I found out about rats that day
They share a trait with owls
They can rotate their head 180 degrees
Tried to hold it so it couldn't bite me and it just twisted around at the neck and bit me anyway
It pulled haxx I pulled haxx
I grabbed a dust mask and scooped it up in that
Then I put it outside and immediately went to the hospital
And when I got there I said I was worried about rabies because I was bit by a wild rat and they said "rats can't carry rabies, but have you had a tetanus shot recently?"
To which I shrugged, they stuck me, and I got some antibiotics
That was a crappy week... Literally
Had an accident while at the beach with a friend
'twas rather uh... Unpleasant
Protip: if you can take whatever animal bit you to be tested [without risk of further injury] do so, especially for things that CAN carry rabies -- they can test the animal and see if it has whatever they're worried about. For things that can carry rabies, if they find it's negative, they don't do rabies shots. If they can't test and it's a species that can carry rabies, they usually do the shots as a precaution
Here at least
lol
Does this sentence need more commas? "From yard displays to Christmas cookies to tree ornaments both old and new, they are a playful favorite of the season."
I would put one between ornaments and both, but I wouldn't say it's needed, just would make it flow better
thanks!
Np
ZDNet reports that Python "is now the most popular language, according to one popularity ranking."
"For the first time in more than 20 years we have a new leader of the pack..." the TIOBE Index announced this month. "The long-standing hegemony of Java and C is over."
When Slashdot reached out to...
Woosh
Is this illegal?
Have enough money for an item that you usually would get a loan for. With good credit, get a low APR loan and invest the money you already have and pay off the loan with the dividends?
Not planning on it because I don't have enough money lol
I mean... as long as you're reporting profits for taxes, not illegal? Just risky because if your investments don't pan out, you could lose money... not really the best idea if you're not flush with cash XD
The interest would outstrip your investment returns typically, that's how loan sharks make money
Yeah, probably
Taking out a payday loan to invest is like burning money
Yeah
With a low enough APR, an index fund should outperform no?
I mean, typical rate of return for an index fund is ~7%
Typical interest rate on a car is 3-5%
But then you have to pay for maintenance, insurance, etc… it could easily eat through your returns
think I have enough Cat-5 running into my fume hood?
(for remote control and monitoring of experiments with the door shut)
there's 2 cables going to each of 6 panels spaced around the room
and each panel will have 2 cables between it and its neighbor panel
Need at least 12 moar
but that's like
double
I mean
I have plenty of cable for it
got a thousand feet from an online friend whose new years resolution was to use more of his money to help others
Never enough!
showed a friend this pic...his response: "Why? Do you plan to send so much data over those cables that you have to worry about the copper evaporating?"
(because it's in the fume hood)
Oh I thought you were going to attach balloons to the other end of the cables to achieve flight
...why are you running it in the fume hood?
... That is a good question
for automation and monitoring of experiments with the door shut
Don't people usually just run it in the walls?
it is in the walls
it's just terminating in the fume hood
then each wall panel will also have 2 cables between it and each of its adjacent wall panels
hold up lemme get a few more pics to show the full setup
(wall panels come after sheetrock, just have wires layed for now)
And by "wall panel" I mean junction box with a face plate
Are you being careful about local codes?
Not to put anyone on blast, but this project report I'm reading has a whole paragraph of excuses regarding its incompleteness
I mean, it's not officially a building. It's less than 200 square feet
Yeah and for electrical I'm having someone experienced do it and show me
THAT is a good idea
Luckily my dad has wired up a lot of buildings in his day
No electrical fires to date that I know of, and I'm pretty sure I'd know
I mean technically I know how to do it but I don't want to risk my lab as my very first solo project all the way through for running electrical
120v or 240v?
120
Running a sub-circuit on its own breaker off of the circuit that runs to the storage building
Which isn't so much a building as a permanent shipping container
Only reason it meets code with as large as it is lol
My dad says he might upgrade the electrical to that whole storage system to bring it from a 15A breaker to a 20A
He literally said he wants me to be able to run a microwave out there lol
(without tripping the breaker because the deep freezer in the storage building decided to kick on during a heating cycle)
(yes I know the pump doesn't pull much but inrush can cause an issue if already under load)
Yeah, microwave is like 66% of your 15A budget, lol
Yeah, that number seems right after a bit of thumb twiddling on the calculator
Whereas on a 20A breaker it's only 58.3%
(ish)
I need a new microwave
Which is why often microwaves have their own breaker in a kitchen if you've got a space designed for the microwave
My microwave broke, but I just fixed it and kept going.
oof
Nah GFCI is its own thing for when the outlet is intended to be operated near water. It stands for "ground fault circuit interrupt"
I meant actually on their own separate breaker
Typically all kitchen outlets are considered to be "near water" and should be GFCI. A separate breaker for a microwave makes sense, as microwaves draw a fair amount of power.
Yeah kitchen, outdoors, bathrooms
Outdoor needs a shield too
(at least per regulation)
I learned about GFCI via a social media post from a new mother: "Oh, you don't know what a GFCI reset is? You will."
Yeah, all our kitchen outlets are GFCI
"a button labeled 'test'? Wonder what it does..." click
"well that was uneventful" leaves tripped GFCI to go play
Now I just push all the buttons that I don't know the purpose of to see what they do... I guess it's the same mindset I've just learned what more and more buttons do
So I never really grew out of the button pushing phase
Walk time, ttyl!
Have a good walk!
I "get" to debug this, without an electrical diagram
First step: reverse engineering
shudders
There's a reason I'm doing two gang outlet boxes in my most used areas in my lab
To avoid exactly this
(also wiring anything I can manage straight into the walls)
(using wire that's to code)
The fume hood being a prime example. No reason to plug it into an outlet when the wires already point toward the wall coming out of the fan
Yeah none of this is to code
I can wire it straight into a switch with an override MOSFET coming from a limit switch
(for when the door shuts)
And with the wires going straight into a junction box in the wall
Hmmmmm
If I'm going to do that I should have another set of software controlled MOSFETs so I can have sensor feedback controlled venting
Though I suppose relays aren't a problem
I have a few chonkers
And I can do some more finessed logic with them using the normally open and normally closed contacts
So I can have the limit switch able to turn the fan on regardless of the switch position, but have software able to turn the fan on or off regardless of door or switch positions
All just using a hierarchy rather than feedback. The software doesn't need to care about the switch and door positions if it does a 3 state output with its floating state meaning "let the next priority level decide" and so on
Which can easily be done with relay logic and if I set it up right only needs one relay that actually switches the fan
So I can use little ones for the logic and a chonker for the fan switching
And I think I'll have 2 physical switches, one of which puts it in full manual override (which means that the other switch has direct fan control) or priority mode (which puts the physical switch at lowest priority)
And since I'm doing relay logic for that, I can use a less beefy switch since it'll be either 5 or 12 volt signaling up until the point of contact with the main relay
And yes I'm aware of flyback protection and such
Anyway that is how I'll do the fan switching. 2 physically switched modes, one very basic and ignoring all other non-physical input, and one a bit more complex that prioritizes a software signal, then a limit switch on the door, then the physical override switch
And for the switches I definitely want them LED lit so I can tell at a glance what mode it should be in
Oh also for the record the fume hood is getting an interior too
Probably sheet metal riveted into place, I just have to figure out how the cabling and airflow needs to happen through the space between that paneling and the outer case
Might use short self tap metal screws I'm not sure... Rivets are less dangerous during servicing though
Just harder to disassemble for service
Although if I find it's too hard to service with the rivets I can dril them out and replace them with screws later
But there's too many holes in the main housing that would be annoying to deal with so I'm just going to make a box within a box
Actually, there's no holes in the sides... I just need a floor and a back panel
And that can be made as one piece
when i plugged it in, my wireless earbuds starting fritzing
Nyoom
My brand is "apocalypse status but it works"
Yes I will seal the edges
And pretty up the ouchy edges
I'll use the rectangular space where the handle was for at least some of the RJ-45 ports to terminate the 12 Cat5e cables running into the back
And I'll add a panel over the cables too
And this bottom plate is cleverly angled to pool all liquids to the center and then pour them out the front notch
Where I'll have a waste disposal drain
Yes kind of not great to have it in front of the work area but imagine the cleaning hassle if it were at the back
I'll just cover it with some grating
In fact... Why don't I put a grate over the whole thing that's level
Then if a spill happens I have drainage to a waste container but I won't have unnecessary tips of containers due to the floor being out of level to accommodate drainage
Because the floor will be a drop in grate that's leveled by knobs like a 3D printer bed and the bottom panel will be for drainage only
Either that or I can make a truss structure to hold 3D printed grate sections in PETG
But I just imagined the disposal nightmare and no.
Because thoroughly cleaning them is out of the question
Too many crevices
Anyway I'm really happy with the progress I'm making on the lab
Im going to have so much desk space
I'm doing a lab desk made of concrete across from the fume hood along the interior wall that's 4 feet long, a wraparound desk along the back wall around to the door on the other side, and a crap load of shelves with grooves in the front wall for a movable ladder
I will be able to store everything out here accessibly
That's huge for me
Because if I can't get to something I effectively don't have it. If I don't have something I need in a crucial moment it can lead to a meltdown
And often a setback of months to years on the project in times past, however I've noticed more maturity in that regard for myself of being able to more quickly pick myself up and put myself back together after a rough moment and not dwell on it
It's a hard thing to do when that's your (previously untamed) nature
had some really tasty fries today, except they had too much salt. Is it rude to tell the shop that? I basically never leave reviews on anything, don't want to come off as one of those customers
You can come at it sideways, like "Can I request fries with less salt?"
oooh
I bet they are adding salt after the fact
I know there's a "hack" to get fresh fries at McDonalds by asking for no salt. But I like salt and dislike making the lives of min wage workers worse
Normally they fry a batch, then shake some salt on, then they're supposed to stir them around so they're salted evenly and the excess falls off. But if they're in a hurry, they'll just salt the batch and start scooping orders.
Makes sense, it was lunchtime, they were fairly busy
Also I'm setting up an "enterprise" github system with 1 user: me
I got some fries a couple of days ago that were great but needed salt. Luckily, I have some flour salt here, which I think is great for fries.
flour salt? Is that flour with salt added?
It's basically powdered salt, really small crystals. Sometimes called "popcorn salt".
oooh
I'm considering buying a friend a nice knife sharpening kit for his 30th, maybe I could throw in some of this salt
He has normal and coarse grain/kosher
73VFQFN? What's that, 3000 to a reel?
code is currently stored on raspberry pis that are not properly power cycled
I designed one of the early Nordic chips into a product, but had a lot of issues with it, I've avoided their chips since.
they seem popular around here, the bluetooth capable one at least
I like the chips but am hesitant on their use
Apple uses them and Google as well so I imagine they are pretty robust
I suspect Apple has the clout to come out and say "We have no patience with your undocumented config registers and closed-source DOS-only config utility" and have them actually listen and do something about it. I do not have that kind of clout, and resent being treated that way by vendors.
It might be better now
They may well have cleaned up their act. I have a bit of antinomy between the concept of "you did a bad thing and I'll take my money elsewhere" and the concept of redemption. If there's no redemption, a company has no motivation to change their ways.
I finally got a company email, now vendors get back to me in days instead of never
OatsNHoney@gmail.com wasn't cutting it
Lol yeah it’s amazing what a company email will do
we're not even buying lots of parts. Also why do suppliers make you request a quote and then just email you their price ranges? Instead of just listing them like normal humans? To justify having a sales staff?
Having my own domain is useful, although I get mixed reactions (and some email validators reject a few of them as likely fake)
I got a domain for my "professional" email because gmail is laughed at in business apparently, some tech companies purportedly just throw out any resume with gmail on it
Yup...
Depends, but can be just a couple dollars a year
interesting
I got a .tech, so my email is firstname@fullname.tech
So are the tech companies assuming if you don't have your own domain you aren't doing professional work?
I guess so? Not sure what the impetus is behind it
seems silly to me but what do I know
I also pay like $6/month for my Google hosting for the site
Well actually there are 4 sites on there
I know it's possible to forward your email to your personal gmail, is it possible to "level shift" it bidirectionally?
But nobody visits, lol
I get a small dribble of visitors
what's a click vs impression?
I'll admit, I'm not entirely clear on that. I think an impression is an object (HTML, image, whatever) sent to a browser, and a click is someone actually clicked on something on one of your pages.
Unrelated, I just realized what a marvel outdoor (or even indoor) pools are. Stagnant water that you "bathe" in and keep clean without enormous effort.
They are still decadent and largely unneeded as a private item to own, but that's irrelevant
Super unrelated, apparently McDonald's has vegan options outside of the US, but has none inside the US, and uses beef flavoring on the fries
and milk!
And sugar!
what
Have for decades at this point, which I like to think helped ease my milk allergies, regular very low exposure
Heh, I haven't looked at my site analytics for a while. Then again, there's little point, the pages referred to here haven't been updated in years.
And here I thought they just put potato pieces in the fryer!
I wonder if indian mcdonalds has a really 🔥 vegetarian menu
I've heard it's
But look at this! https://www.mcdonalds.com/de/de-de/product/veganburger-ts-2570.html
I think I first heard this (paraphrased) quote from Civilization "No two countries with a mcdonald's have ever been at war"
I do much prefer Indian and Ethiopian vegetarian fare to most of the stuff I find in the United States. I used to think companies imagined vegetarians just liked tomatoes, eggplant, mushrooms, and bell peppers. Then I realized companies just like cheap ingredients.
BK has the impossible whopper, it's pretty good. I had a really good impossible burger at a restaurant, but I think they got different patties because it was way juicier and full of umami.
So true. American diet doesn't have millennia of history making vegetarian food
It's like "Oh just have some mashed potatoes, oh you're vegan? have you considered not eating?"
I was amused to find out Boston baked beans are based on a native American dish that was originally made with beans, maple syrup, and bear fat.
that sounds tasty
Ooooh if you feed the bear a berry heavy diet, the fat will taste better
What I'm proposing is: we domesticate bears and feed them only jam
Yogi approves
that we're gonna eat his fat?
What are the vegan/vegetarian options like there? It seems like a lot of things here are trying to emulate animal products [like Impossible burgers and nuggets] because it seems people generally want to go vegetarian/vegan for reasons like environmental impact and health rather than not liking meat products
Yeah
it depends HEAVILY on location
in the bayou? I doubt there's much vegan food (although vegan southern food can be done well)
I'm in PA. Before Impossible and Beyond, it seemed like "vegetarian food" was mostly your regular veggies... so like a veggie burger was basically a salad on buns
In the bay area of cali? can't swing a cat but to hit a vegan place
Oh for some reason I thought you were in canada
Eat bears?!
It's only fair to hunt bears, they can hunt back
I thought bears weren't great to eat because they're largely stringy tough meat or pure fat
I think in my case I was assuming we were harvesting fat, but better not let it go to waste. Make burgers, beargers
Here's the menu from a company picnic a while back. The vegetarian option is fungus, fungus, fungus, and olive oil.
I think the vegetarian option at mine was pinto bean chili, which may or may not have drippings in it
Unfortunately, I dislike tomatoes, mushrooms, and bell peppers, which puts a lot of US vegetarian fare off my plate.
we should make pizzas together some time, I can have all your mushrooms, tomatoes, and bell peppers
My favorite pizza is spinach and onions
I remember that scene in "Inside Out" where the kid sees broccoli pizza and says something like "Thanks California, you ruined pizza!" Not that I agree, I think broccoli is fine on pizza, but it was a funny scene.
Lol
Broccoli on pizza I can be picky about -- some places just throw a big tree of it on, and half of it burns, but good places cut it up so that it's more flat and actually gets absorbed into the cheese
broccoli is really good on pizza if you crisp it up in the pan first and put it on the pizza like 1/4 of the way into the cook
It does seem to burn if they put it on at the start... but when the forest is raised high above the ground, they gonna catch fire
Good point: technique matters
the looseness of cooking techniques has always irked me, and lead me to like baking much more than cooking
For a search engine, a "click" would be when someone clicks the link to your page, and an "impression" would be when someone is served a search results page that contains a link to your page. So a click implies an impression, but an impression doesn't imply a click.
ahhh
Does microwaving things count as cooking?
I hope I never have to know a thing more about SEO lol
I'm in this message and I don't like it
Those terms are also used when one talks about pricing structures for advertising services -- advertisers often pay by the impression (and I'm not sure how clicks factor into the pricing, if at all)
I mean the microwave is basically how I live, it's not like I have an hour to cook every meal XD
idk how my friend does it, he cooks every night
do they pay search engines to show up higher? is that a thing?
though it's different than search, because the amount the advertiser pays influences how often the result shows up, whereas an ethical search engine will not do that
I know there are related ads served, but are the "real" results skewed?
it is a thing with unethical search engines like Yelp
Ahh
Also where does one go to buy terribly unhealthy amounts of sugary candy on the internet while avoiding giving bezos any more money than is practical
Google is very adamant about not doing that, from what I understand
Good to hear
I need to change my avatar, when I'm in conversation with someone else with a red avatar it looks at a glance like one person spamming the chat lol
I can give you one XD
I'm finding one that matches my name
you're gonna help my dentist pay off his boat
which is a way of saying thank you
I'm using this
Fancy
https://www.pd.net has some interesting candy offerings as well, also sweetcandy.com
I've found myself not eating nearly as much candy as I used to
And when I do it's like, Sixlets and darker chocolate
I've switched to only hard candy... lasts a lot longer per calorie. 😅
Mmmm hard candies
I just crunch the hard candy into paste and eat more of them. I'm terrible
Oh man, right before Halloween has got to be the WORST time to buy candy
oh well
It's payday this week
Best time is the week after
yeah, I celebrate the day after valentine's for the same reason
I wonder if it's TWO days after halloween in communities that also celebrate dia de los muertos
Is that one traditionally celebrated with candy?
I recall making sugar skulls in grade school
but I suspect in american communities halloween is also celebrated and could bleed into DDLM
Hmm
lotsa candy ordered
lol
Even found out they still sell the black licorice dots (called "Crows")
XD
I got some turkish delight to bring in to work. I find it's a polarizing treat. I look forward to finding out who gets to be in my compound when the zombie apocalypse comes
Imagine sharing candy and resources :P
but only with people who appreciate the deliciousness that is rose flavored gelatin
Hmm
just wondering, does anyone else use the middle mouse click button? i don't see that many people use it
I do, to close tabs in firefox
Same
yessss
and in vidya games
it also works in alt + tab screen and to close desktop in desktop screen (win + tab)
Similar question: what tf happened to scroll bars?
oh yeah, they have gone the way of the dodo
Why are they skinny to the point of being invisible, and why can they be color changed
glares at windows start screen
like why so small
skinny boi
even discord scroll bar is a bit small
Vertically, I have to basically guess randomly where the bar is currently (due to color scheme on discord); then horizontally, I have to hope I hit the right one pixel to click it
If I guess correctly on the horizontal axis but incorrectly on the vertical one, I get teleported
i hate that
also i'm waiting for ms paint to implement shift + scrolling
cause it's much better than dragging a scroll bar
actually most applicatinos, but ms paint is the worst
In most gtk themes, they expand hardly at all and are still almost invisible
There are a few holdouts that still give the scrollbars meat, last I checked / iirc
Yea, but try hovering your mouse at max dpi over a 2 px scrollbar 😛
Chrome does nice thicc ones
It's doable but it takes such an outsize amount of mental energy that does not need to be spent that way
This is why DPI adjustments, lol
does chrome roll their own gui toolkit?
I don't really use scrollbars anyway, especially for the Start menu -- press the Windows key, type thing I want, enter!
did you hear that windows 8 and above replaced the start menu with ads
I'm impatient - click once to get to basically no dpi, and click 5 times to get back to my preferred dpi (max) and hope i don't overshoot
Idk lol
They have like, Windows Store stuff, but you can clear all the tiles [like I did]
I don't mouse a lot
can a company pay microsoft to put their crap in your start menu?
Yup. MICROS~1 has always been advertiser friendly.
based on my limited use of windows 10 (a VM for zoom), it seems like the contents of that start thing are really not in the control of the user
I heard that Firefox will insert ads suggestions and what you type to Mozilla in the url bar
not disableable? (enabled by default is still bad)
You can remove all the tiles and customize it - did it and is a bit useful which is better than utterly useless and annoying
if you do that, does it stay that way?
Idk didn't read past headline cause I don't use firefox
I think article on howtogeek about it
I don't think they've ever done ads, but they allow companies like OEMs to create installs with pre-installed software, and those companies pay for the privilege. The only thing you might call ads is what shows for the Windows Store "suggestions"
Candy crush lol
Yeah, among other things. But not just like... straight up pop-up ads or anything like that
Just things IN the Windows Store
Not yet at least
I'm not sure I see the distinction
the OEM pre-installed software thing I get
it's a different kind of ad
since they're all free trials
There's a difference between showing previews of things in your store, vs. just random crap on the internet [like what pops up all over websites]
so there's that, and then there's the list of adds that the start menu downloads from microsoft every time you press the win key
sure but they're both ads
I need to go to bed
Goodnight!
Okay so I'm on the side of "there's a difference between ads for things on another platform and ads for things on the same platform"
Mostly because that's how advertising will work on my game console for user developed games
wise folks (on the decision to go to sleep)
there is a difference between ads^[1] and ads^[2]
How else will people know about the games users make other than word of mouth?
Also nobody makes money directly from the ads themselves in my model. They are free to the user advertising, I don't make money on clicks, but users are free to set the price of their game so advertising generates revenue if and only if it convinces you to buy the game
Not sure how I want to go about it but I want to figure out how to anonymise and customize preference space entirely. Don't want ads? Sure I actually support that. There will be a pop up that's opt-in to enable in-platform advertising for those who want to get game suggestions
And when you say "nope don't want the ads" it logs that and doesn't ask again
But the option will be togglable in a menu
Mr sand man is chasing me down too, probably gonna catch me soon o/
Captain Kirk is going to space https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEhdlIor-do
New Shepard’s 18th mission, NS-18, will lift off on Wednesday, October 13, carrying four astronauts, Dr. Chris Boshuizen, Glen de Vries, Audrey Powers, and William Shatner, to space and back.
Live launch coverage begins T-90 minutes. Follow @BlueOrigin on Twitter for launch updates.
Nicely done
And it has 4 bearings, so the high-pressure & low-pressure axles actually spin independently
Ohhh, nice
Super excited to finish this, but in reality it’s gonna be a week or two lol— there’s so many different types of parts that all require slightly different print settings
At least, when using something as cheap as an e3
So the whole process is an exercise in print-quality troubleshooting lol
Oooooooh
If I had the money, I'd pledge for it.
That board is pretty

@weary fiber Where did you get the model for the fan?
anyone mind seeing if the doordash app is working (don't need to order anything, I can't even get that far) for them?
A model of a 2-spool high bypass turbofan. I designed the whole engine from scratch with visual cues to certain existing engines. For example, I think Rolls-Royce makes the best-looking fans, so there's some resemblance there... By the way, this model was featured on SolidSmack.
Several parts benefit from the use of custom supports. I included ...

This is a remix of the excellent 3D Printable Jet Engine by CATIAV5FTW.
I modified various parts to incorporate an electric motor, to animate this wonderful model.
Print time of the set: 190 h 30 minutes. About 1,5 kg PLA
Stay tuned with the details evolution by checking the Watch box.
You will have probably noticed, this is a remix of the work...
WELP-
that's not supposed to happen.

anyone know how to register to be on show and tell?
I think there's a form that gets posted right before the stream
it should be among the various stream posts that alert folks the stream is coming
ah never seen that. ok thanks a bunch!
I hope I'm right lol
i'll let you know 😄
send any complaints to /dev/null 😛
I've always heard that in a playful context, in case that has other connotations
I mean in the right context that could be an incredibly poor choice of things to say to someone
But mostly I've seen it playfully
For instance in a shared server environment using an internal mail service that can pipe to /dev/null for testing
I def meant it playfully, but I'll reconsider using it in the future
I mean out of extremely specific contexts it can only really be construed as playful as far as I have seen
But you never know what someone's past experiences are and whether someone has said something like that to them non-jokingly before
Which may bring back unpleasant things for them
Not that I'm the thought police or anything just things to consider
I know I've been set off by things that in most contexts would be seen as purely joking including by the tone of what was said
For instance I hopped on a voice chat with someone I actually like most days (in a group with a few other people) a while back and I had just woken up, was stressing about money, and people were complaining about bosses and I made some joke about my boss with the punchline being that they are imaginary. The person comes back, completely jokingly and says "get a job!" which I laughed off and returned with "I am a job" because it actually kind of hurt coming from this person and I was trying to play it cool... Then they come back with "you're work if that's what you mean..." also (from their perspective jokingly) and I just immediately disconnected and had a straight anxiety meltdown and went into a pretty bad state for the remainder of the day... Yes, on me for being over-sensitive but at the same time sensitivity goes both ways and if you lack any in what you dish out, you may get an over correction as a response
But employment is a sensitive subject for me. I can't work for someone else. I've tried. Many times. My bipolar gets in the way every time and what employers want I can't deliver because of it. So I'm trying to become gainfully self employed but the struggle from near the bottom is real...
So things others may see as joking with regard to that subject I take very seriously
Just a tangential example of when something said jokingly can be taken seriously with good reason and just a reminder to be aware of context when you say things 😄
Because anything in the wrong context can be very detrimental
Water? Necessary to survive, but if it goes the wrong direction by just few degrees it has a chance to kill you.
People say intent is the important factor behind what you say and do but I say it's context because that determines the entire outcome of any given set of actions.
Intent is important to cope with context but it isn't the root
Going back to the water analogy, if you intend to take a drink but the context under which you intend to do so causes the water to go the wrong way for whatever reason, your intentions are irrelevant.
I expect you already found the info, but just in case:
https://learn.adafruit.com/show-and-tell/joining-show-and-tell
Sooo I have a bit of a conundrum and I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible. I want a maker channel that I regularly post to when my lab is functional. I already have a channel made that I really like the name of but it has both my first and last names in it so I'm not sure how I feel, because on the other hand with how cavalier I've been at points in the past about posting identifying information about myself in various places in combination with the kind of stuff I am working towards, if even one of those projects works out how I want I'm going to end up somewhat famous anyway... So if I get ahead of it, it won't be an instance where suddenly people know who I am and I don't know how to cope... Idk need opinions
I have a spreadsheet with a bunch of named ranges that I'm adding to each other, is there a way to populate a cell with the names that I have added together?
in google sheets
Screenshot a swath of it?
to show here? There isn't much yet
Make 2 example data
here you go, I would want the text song_1+quick_off in the cell to the right of the highlighted one
Mk I don't know enough to answer from phone
oh my gosh
But I'll take a look when I get to computer, since you made the screenshot :)
there seems to be a built in function, FORMULATEXT
Oh is that what you're looking for
I have the skills to write my own but I'm so glad I don't have to
let's see
it worked!
wooooo
google is sometimes evil but they do so many things that make my life easier...
What would be the regular expression for an equals sign at the beginning of a string? It's been years since I looked at that stuff
only my opinion, i wouldn't worry too much about the name in the beginning. maybe after some videos you'll get some idea from viewers what they like and don't like. hope that's helpful?
Ah, just "=" works
Digi-Key stock abnormalities continue
Update: the stock according to the app is 70,050. Website still says 3,000. So so weird. https://t.co/hzEfBGFlf0
Last night it was 79,200
Now it’s 70,050
someone needed a lot of those MCUs
It was probably Adafruit 😉
Three reels worth
Plus 150
So someone bought $31k of nRF52840
Reminds me of this continual experience I have: apprehension at a large, expensive order I want to put in, my boss looks at it and pays without blinking
I forget that what's BIG money to me is nothing to a sufficiently large company
I think my biggest order at AdaFruit was $1400 or so
how many free protoboards did you get?
I wish I could order $1400 from Adafruit lol
move to a country that uses "a" dollar, but a weak one.
Most I’ve ordered was… $70?
Granted, that's when I was running a freelance hardware business bankrolled by somebody else.
Nice
All this nonchalance about ordering has led me to believe that the raise I want in the future is totally possible
Or at least get $.XX per mile on my commute
I actually managed that once. I was on the road a few hours a day and managed to beat the contracts department into paying me mileage. That extra money bought me a nice car.
what would be an ideal amount to get? I get ~31 mpg and gas is 4.25-450 per gallon here
And I commute 40 miles
Wait I'm just setting up a 5th grade math problem
I can do this
I think I got the then-current federal allowance, which was a bit over 50 cents a mile.
wow
I'm just concerned because I didn't get my mom's dealmaking skills
as a child I watched her get a car salesman to sell her a car at less than cost
It's not just gas, it's time, effort, wear and tear, expendables (tires, etc.), risk of speeding tickets, tolls, etc.
it was breathtaking
That is an awesome skill!
I would pay to see that
I brought her to buy my first car that I wasn't buying from family, to help out
She's p badass all around
Smart move.
My godmother is Mohawk, and I bought my first car from her. I didn't know for years (but should have guessed) that the little sticker with interesting shapes on it was a symbol from the Mohawk nation. My pasty self was driving around probably really confusing or even offending the odd person
I just thought they were neat shapes!
Test casing for SHARP 2.9" memory display, take 2...
Heh, large order for me is $50-$100
Oh neat
I just placed an order with free shipping, but it took a lot of my brain and sweat and tears, lol
Lol
I forgot to include some space for the nobbies on the edge of the PCB that I didn't feel like trimming, lol
Lol
Apparently the information that the little bumpy tabs on the electrical boxes is a guide for how far to stick out from the stud never made its way to me before I started putting in the electrical boxes... Needless to say I finished putting them all in before this was pointed out...
Luckily it's only like 10 or so
But the two gang boxes are going to be annoying to pull out because of how the nails angle...
So I'm taking a break after redoing the easy ones
And once I get them out, they are annoying to nail in so I may take the nails out entirely and use screws on those ones
Also I'm going to just hook the fume hood fan up to a switch on the wall for now and later I can remove the switch, stick a power relay inside the box, and have an external switching logic box on the wall. Still want to figure out an outlet or plug strip inside the fume hood though
Probably will just run a plug strip with a long cable inside of it since I'll be mostly just running 3D printers in it, then have the cable go through flex conduit out of the fume hood
And make a flip guard for it to prevent some amount of vapor ingress destroying the terminals... Unless they have outdoor plugstrips with sealed door shields like outdoor GFCI covers
That would be ideal
Dopesick on Hulu is really good so far
About one of the biggest crimes of the last 40 years
Okay most of the electrical wire is in
14 gauge for lighting / fume hood fan, 12 gauge for everything else
Just have 2 more wires to run, then I need to install 4 switches, 3 light sockets, and like... 10 outlets I think
6 of those outlet blocks are for my side, 4 for my parents', which means I'll have 12 outlets without needing any plug strips
Apparently sheet rock and insulation could be a while because funds
So full completion is not until winterish probably
Maybe I should start a go fund me
@quartz wren what are you cooking tbh?
This here is where a reciprocating saw comes in handy. Once those 16d sinkers are in they don’t typically come out without damaging the gang box
Hax
Free costume idea: an Adafruit order. You can make a suit out of boxes and packaging from all your orders. Perma-proto boards can go over your eyes since you can see thru the holes, and you can have various electronic glowy bits hanging out!
I feel like if you ordered that much from Adafruit already, you might as well just tie a matrixportal to your chest and be a walking billboard. Complete the look with some LED glasses and you'll be safe(r) when you go trick or treating!
Hehe, that would be a great glowy bit
It is always fun when you know your order is coming soon
yeah, with standard shipping it should get to you by .
So my suspicion around the difference between the stock count in the app and website wasn’t unfounded
On Digi-Key
Twas a glitch
watch in the next few years just buying electronics will become part of a elite club
Like Best Buy...
I remember there was one picture of a outdoor weather display showing -273 C
which clearly shows that internally, the temperature was represented in Kelvins and converted for display
Lol
would it even be possible to have a conversation at that temp? Wouldn't the air not be able to move? idk
I got all of them out just fine with a cat's paw
cooking? in the lab?
I mean
I might try to make a souffle in the microwave just to annoy people
Theoretically at 0K nothing would happen. Atoms would stop dead in their tracks, zero energy… which might also collapse them from existence?
Not exactly. Zero thermal energy is different than zero energy. The electrons would keep orbiting in their ground states, etc.
I think one may need to do serious stat mech to talk about 0K https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_temperature
Certain systems can achieve negative thermodynamic temperature; that is, their temperature can be expressed as a negative quantity on the Kelvin or Rankine scales. This should be distinguished from temperatures expressed as negative numbers on non-thermodynamic Celsius or Fahrenheit scales, which are nevertheless higher than absolute zero.
The a...
which is precisely why you can't reach 0K
because it is actually equivalent at that scale
the electron movement and the atomic movement and really really close to 0, the quantum uncertainty make it so 0K isn't physically possible
so like, saying "oh we just can't reach it" is a bit misleading. according to the models we have of our universe that match quite well to experiment, it's fundamentally unreachable
Lucky
😁
We have flooding and lots of rain from Pamela here
Literal RVs are getting carried downriver here
37°F and a wintery mix of rain/snow
and we never have flooding
75F here, sunny, 95F in my room
Wut? It's 87 here
Please send ice cubes
Yes, do
It's rainy here but this is normal weather for fall
I want to nap on that
I would pay Frozone to ice a large area for me
I'm wearing a flannel, a sweat shirt, a vest, and a thick hat...
As well as a pair of soccer sweats under my jeans
48F here
That’s shorts and T-shirt weather for me if I’m active… maybe long pants and hoodie if I’m doing absolutely nothing
But probably still no hoodie
I like it 45 and under
I have no meat on my bones
Cold == deadly
I almost got hypothermia the other night and had to take a medical emergency bath
(was outside for too long in the cold and when I went in to warm up my extremities I could literally feel my core temp plummeting as the blood started to flow through the cold parts)
And then I was just cold everywhere
And starting to cross the "don't care" threshold
But I've been hypothermic twice before so I knew that I needed to get myself warm somehow because my own body heat just wasn't doing it.
See it wouldn't be such a big deal to warm up my cold extremities by just getting my blood flowing again but my core doesn't have enough thermal mass
I've heard of that happening to people before -
I have Raynaud's
And I've been working my weight up from an unhealthy point, with much resistance
(from my body)
I'm hotter than a nuclear reactor
I'm hotter then my computer trying to play a game
I’m hotter than my computer doing a physics simulation
Lol
Oh....
Yeaaaahhhh so "cold" for me is 50F and below
Actually anything below 60 and I usually need long sleeves
Cold for me is probs 50F and below too
Depending on my activity levels I can get goosebumps and shiver at 70
Ouch
Cold for me is like 35F… hot is 50-55F
Oof
Probably both
Lol
Or someone insisted on putting something far heavier on top of it. x 5 or something.
TFW you have too many project ideas and not enough patience to develop software for the vast majority of them...
Or develop anything for any of them
Lol
Also, what leads me to believe my package may have been in an accident is the fact that it was supposed to be here yesterday but didn’t show up and then was pushed for today.
Too many projects, time to add more projects
I saw a product on tindie that turned a gameboy into a usb controller using an RF transmitter cart, and wanted to one-up it with an ESP32 module for BLE, but then I realize that it's so overkill I could have it actually display something on the screen if I really researched the GBA architecture...
But do I really want to cram an ESP32-WROOM into a GBA cartridge...?
Do you not want to?
Occurs to me you're lucky you even got it. I've had them return stuff because "it was damaged during shipping due to some undisclosed reason" or some such nonsense wording.
Shipping is nuts these days
I’ve not had that happen yet but it’s only a matter of time given the current shipping climate
Indeed.
I do, but the risk of me never doing anything with it after...
I’ve had this happen with a keyboard I ordered from the states; it got stuck in customs, then reported lost, then sent back because it was “damaged in processing” D:
Ugh, bummer.
aye, shipping is just sometimes sad nowadays
Did this use to not be the case, and is there any theory of why it became this way?
Well, supply chain is still very heavily bottlenecked at ports, so my guess is increased demand plays a factor?
It’s probably straining our available labor forces in this regard, causing more issues and inconsistencies to pop up.
This is mood
When it comes to impulse-driven projects vs purpose-driven projects, the motivation for the latter is much more reliable...
I impulse-bought too many electronic components...
Basically all logistics of everything is on fire because of a number of factors. Shortages are being caused by lack of raw materials or people to obtain them, as well as transport them. Power is at a premium in some places, so places that have materials might not be able to make things with them due to rolling industrial blackouts. When they do make things, they might not be able to get someone to collect, or the items get stuck at sending ports, or on ships in containers, or at receiving ports, warehouses… everything is ahhh
TFW you want to commission a painting but your vision is really expensive :(
Yeah it would be dope as heck but gonna have to save up
Shoving an ESP module into a GBA cart has been on my todo for a while
wanted to have it capable of running a sort of real time assembler and step by step tell the GBA what to do
but also run local software on the module to make that capability useful
thus far it hasn't materialised but I do still want to explore it
At what point is the cartridge more powerful than the GBA
search pi storm
it's sad eventually there wont be a single retro computer left.
all that will remain is software, schematics and emulators.
eventually all transistors meet the same fate
Heh I just ordered a PiTrex
When the cartridge has its own Gpu of any sort… google wolfenstein 3D gbc.
Woooah
Is it true that Teslas are all the same, and the more expensive ones just have features locked down in software? If so, can you pay-as-you-go for the better features?
Nope. Some have one motor, some have two
Ahh ok, can't remember where I heard that
So if you wanted to upgrade over time to a really nice one you'd have to get the base model dual-motor and then could you upgrade as you go?
I'm guessing partially
I mean that was the point. A sort of coprocessor module to use the GBA as a dumb terminal that interacts with a more powerful device. If I do end up doing this in the future I'll probably do a combination of RP2040 and ESP8266
Then use some low profile connector to break out USB from the RP2040 for programming and peripherals
Could even have a keyboard and touchpad mouse that slot around the gameboy profile but that requires different designs for GBA and GBA SP
just had to listen to an ad for medicine and the side effects were read so fast it sounded like "may have... trouble breathing or sweating" instead of "may have... trouble breathing, or sweating"
Random preference question: “based upon” or “based on”?
I say based on but I'm pretty casual
Lol, same
If I'm writing an email to my boss' boss, or justifying a purchase with "based upon my research", I would use upon
It does feel more formal
Depends on context
I'll use both of them just whichever feels right in the moment
Well, I mostly was thinking like, in the credits of a show when it's a thing that was based on another thing [like all Star Trek shows now are "based on/upon Star Trek by Gene Roddenberry"]
So yeah in this context I would use "based on" but for something where I'm explaining the reasons for something I would use something along the lines of "based upon a, b, or c, something about d"
upon definitely has more weight
Also it's payday tomorrow, and I'm buying payday donuts for the team. I'm getting a dozen, what are classically good varieties? I have food allergies and don't know donuts well
lol
You can only say "based upon" if you also say "amongst"
There's one place in town that did vegan donuts and they were good but over 2 dollars per
In my hometown there's a vegan donut place that does it right
Oops
Wrong message
Yeah all the vegan donuts I've tried are terrible and gluten free breads are even worse
so what are people flavor opinions?
I personally can eat as many maple donuts as I have access to
Also just traditional glazed are always a safe bet
Well, allergies are tricky... I can tell you that anyone with an allergy like mine [deadly peanut allergy] will avoid the entire box if one kind has the allergen. Food preferences and some dietary issues it can be less strict -- like, some folks with gluten allergies or Celiac disease can't eat anything that TOUCHED gluten, others just can't directly eat it. Lactose is usually not something contact matters for. Vegan folks may or may not care if there were non-vegan donuts in the box with the vegan donuts. Probs safe bet would be get some vegan and some not, try to avoid major allergens where possible, and if it's not a hassle have two boxes. Make sure the boxes are marked for whatever possible allergens or dietary preferences people may want to know about -- I can tell you it's painful to have to try to call the place that they came from to find out if I can eat a donut and not die, so it would be immensely kind of you to have all that information readily available for your coworkers.
so far it's
1 Maple
2 Chocolate glazed
2 regular glazed
jelly filled?
Oh and I know fritters are generally pretty popular
I'm always of the opinion that people don't have to cater to my food needs, since I've been bringing my own cupcakes to birthdays since I was born, but others can feel differently with equal validity
I called around town about vegan donuts for my boss but zilch
You buy your boss doughnuts on payday?
Yeah, you don't have to do any of those things, it's up to you how much effort you want to go thru. But you'd at least be doing an immense kindness to have relevant allergy info
definitely, I don't think anyone on my team has allergies, it would have come up when mine did
Lucky people
She's allowed to partake, she's very nice.
we literally sit next to each other, it would be awkward if I excluded her 😛
This is not a "boss makes a dollar, I make a dime" situation haha
lol
the owner? He can buy his own donuts
Ok so I'll get some interesting donuts to round out the dozen
Chocolate donuts filled with chocolate creme.... Mmmm....
Oooh I love the Boston creme snack pies at 7-11 (surprisingly none of my allergens)
Too much temptation, bad for the love handles
Ok a few things
