@late fulcrum managed to coat the bottom of a jar in phosphor from a dead CFL

#

(yes I know, mercury, am being careful)

#

Soooo... If I were to set that up on my SATA SSD it might improve performance?

honest jolt
#

If you want to set it up on a fast computer, you should run something like a miner or compile a game in Unity while "it checks you computer on whether or not it will benefit from it"

#

Although 2GB RAM on Windows sounds like a torture method - 8 is the absolute minimum if you want to use it within the next day instead of year

#

Hmmmm...I wonder if they sell RAM in USB drive form so you can use it like a drive but you then dedicate the entire drive to readyboost

thick wind
#

Specifically ram doesn’t yet exist in usb stick form, due to the fact that usb write speeds weren’t ideal for true ram. However, they used to market some flash drives as readyboost capable…

#

I wonder if usb c’s extra data lines could get there.

#

You could use an entire fat16 drive for readyboost though

#

It’s not real ram, but it does help improve system efficiency when dealing with a series of often repeated tasks

honest jolt
#

I would like to see a product that is basically USB 3.1 RAM that is really big (like 32GB) that is used for fast file storage

thick wind
#

Apparently it’s not enough for actual ram

#

It has to compete with the growing capabilities of pcie so it makes sense

honest jolt
#

Apparently usb 3.1 can get 10gbps while ddr3 ram can range from 6400 mb to 12800 mb per sec

#

But a SSD only offers 50-250 mb per sec

#

So if it used usb 3.1, maybe it might be useful :/

delicate stream
#

I have like 200 Windows open

delicate stream
#

USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1/3.2 Gen 1 is 5Gbps, 3.1 Gen 2/3.2 Gen 2 is 10Gbps, and 3.2 Gen 2x2 is 20Gbps

#

DDR4 3200 is like 27GBps

honest jolt
#

USB naming scheme is all f***** up

#

And I hate it when companies use gigabits instead of gigabytes

delicate stream
#

I dunno why they thought renaming things was a good idea

honest jolt
#

It hurts my head even if it's mostly dividing by 8

#

Or 10

#

Or something

delicate stream
#

5Gbps should have stayed 3.0, 10Gbps should have been 3.1, 20Gbps should have been 3.2

honest jolt
#

Exactly

delicate stream
#

Storage has the issue of being measured differently by manufactures vs. Operating systems, so that's confusing too

honest jolt
#

A kb will always be 1024 b

#

And it should

#

If I was president, I would get Congress to force companies to switch to gigabytes and use 1024 instead of 1000

delicate stream
#

Kb is 1024b, KB is 8192b

honest jolt
#

Kilobit and kilobyte????

delicate stream
#

Capitalization matters

honest jolt
#

AHHHHHHHH

#

kilobits, megabit, and gigabit should not exist

#

Or terabits eventually 😂

delicate stream
#

Plus everyone is wrong most of the time anyway... The base 10 system is kilo/mega/giga, base 2 is kibi/mebi/gibi, and everyone just uses the former all the time

honest jolt
#

Kibibyte sounds wrong in my mouth 😂

delicate stream

Indeed

#

Which is why I just say kilobyte and live with my sin

vagrant sonnet

wooden schooner
#

It is a multiplicative factor, so I don't think "scale" is exactly the right word. I think people just give a nebulous wiggle room to any storage size number, to account for several things including file system overhead, G vs. Gi, and probably some other nonsense that comes up when one deploys to a cloud compute service

delicate stream
#

Well, I mean, when we were in K ranges of storage, one file was likely to be a higher percentage of the capacity vs. now; we have a lot of big files, but many many things are far less than 1GB/1GiB, but most systems will have 1+TB/TiB storage anymore

Doing research for a (nerdy) story that takes place in 1982, makes me realize how extremely powerful modern computers are... and how inefficient modern software is. In the story, the little RK3288 Chromebook I have is the most powerful computer on the planet and all I do on it is write and look at documents.

delicate stream
#

We put incredible amounts of power into watches these days... Processing power that could have changed the world in the early days. It is kinda crazy when you think about it

pearl rover
#

just thinking something like an attiny4 with a few thousand transistors and half a kb of flash in a dual transistor package (sot23) has more transistors/switches than the colossus; miniaturization really is a wondrous thing

delicate stream
#

Indeed!

dusty citrus
#

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDC_Cyber In 82, the most powerful supercomputer is capable of 400 MFLOPS, the x86 Xeon that I'm using that Microsoft finds "too old" for Windows 11 does 354.8 GFLOPS at base speed.

The CDC Cyber range of mainframe-class supercomputers were the primary products of Control Data Corporation (CDC) during the 1970s and 1980s. In their day, they were the computer architecture of choice for scientific and mathematically intensive computing. They were used for modeling fluid flow, material science stress analysis, electrochemical ...

delicate stream
#

Well, Windows 11 is dumb because they think 1st gen Ryzen from 2017 can't handle it, but yeah, things being discarded today are insanely powerful

delicate stream
#

My phone from 8 years ago is still 2x+ faster than that CDC Cyber!

wooden schooner
dusty citrus
#

Yes, definitely more inexpensive to have the end user get something newer than spend a lot of time making more efficient software

delicate stream
#

But also "why bother making it more efficient when it's cheaper to have more processing power?"

wooden schooner
#

Bonus: this gives big tech companies more control of the economy

dusty citrus
#

that's why my site is all manually typed HTML + CSS

delicate stream
dusty citrus
wooden schooner
#

I think there is a common principle underlying both software updates and legislation in the United States. There is "value" to getting one's stuff into the package that will be installed into the public's life, so there is both secrecy and bloat in these packages, caused by the various players vying to push their agendas

#

No one pretends that statutes are small and focused, they clearly each bear a signature of incidental compromises

quartz wren
#

I mean

#

If you have the option of being more efficient on more powerful hardware, it's silly not to get as much performance as possible and it's just plain rude to other applications in a multi-tasking environment not to

#

Part of what put me off about computer science related course work I've seen.

#

The attitude is "there's plenty of oomph, just write it to work"

#

Which is fine if your program is the only one running.

#

But if everyone takes that attitude when releasing for a multi-tasking environment it gets bad fast.

delicate stream
#

Well, if your program uses 0.5% of your target system's resources, it may not seem worth it... Very hard to know what's diminishing returns on optimization -- might be 10% more work for 50% better improvement, or it might be 200% more work for a 5% gain, no way to know, so why bother optimizing if it meets requirements?

quartz wren
#

I guess my perspective is different because I do custom RISC CPU design as a hobby so most of what I target is slower than most modern hardware

wooden schooner
#

it's not clear to me that software companies have much incentive to design "end-user" applications with good performance. If users can't tell which of the many programs running on their machine "causes" it to be slow, it seems like they get off scot free.

#

in fact, pre-loading their program on startup seems like free money: the application opens quicker, while the load at startup makes other companies' software look slower.

tardy badger
#

Me: looks at chrome and CURA

wooden schooner
#

meanwhile, the user's computer is confusingly slow, but not traceable to a specific company. And the computer vendors like this because it makes the hardware go obsolete faster

Because he is so negligent it takes him 2 hours to realize they have escaped the pen and another 2 to do anything about it

Instead he's yelling to his friends on the internet about the woes of the world without actually trying to do anything about it and expecting everyone else to. I do my fair share of yelling on the web but I am also putting together and enacting a plan to fix what I can.

Well that wasn't a good therapist

quartz wren
#

Nope.

#

Not at all. Seems to be my luck though.

#

So I find I do better therapy for my own dang self because I tend to get advice that damages me further from licensed therapists.

#

The mental health system in my state is pretty atrocious.

#

I have PTSD from psych units so bad I don't go to hospitals unless it is life or death anymore.

delicate stream
#

Mental health hard... I'm a mess

quartz wren
#

They have a pattern of poking and prodding people in crisis (or attempt to induce crisis when you come in with a medical emergency as a matter of policy by asking mental health screening questions when they aren't warranted) so that you snap and they can classify you as involuntarily admitted and strip you of all rights they legally can so things are easier on their side.

#

It has happened all 4 times I have gone in for mental health treatment and they tried to get me when I went in for something medical most recently but I gave them that look like "are you trying to have me involuntaried?" and they knew what I was saying without even needing to say it because they immediately came back with "we have to ask these questions because you have a history"

#

So it is a matter of policy to dredge up terrible thoughts when someone comes in for medical treatment if they have a history of psych treatment.

#

So I guess I'll just patch my dang self up unless I need an ambulance got plenty of practice and super glue is cheap

I think I figured out how to do my laser based oscilloscope

#

The screen will be a glow in the dark star that's melted into the bottom of a jar, then it will have UV back lighting to get it glowing, then I'll have a laser mounted to a hard drive spindle motor and a mirror mounted to an HDD arm/voice coil array

#

Then you spin up the laser to a precise rotation speed and just deflect vertically using a mirror

#

Means no need to change directions of the beam sweep so you can get a higher sweep rate and have it induce less frame vibration

#

Also I found out that with phosphorescent quenching, the quenched point gets brighter first, so the trace will be darker than background and the point will be brighter

#

Gonna look friggin sweet!

#

Also happy birthday @hasty quarry and happy late birthday @late fulcrum

hasty quarry

Thank you guys

wooden schooner
#

Happy birthdays!

quartz wren
#

Hmmm... Just thought about the mechanics of having the laser spin free... I either need some kind of conductive bearing tracks or I can put a set of coils onboard the spindle that passes magnets and generates electricity from the spin of the motor to drive the beam

#

Also means that the faster it spins the brighter the laser will be

#

Which is good because if it changes spin speed without varying the brightness to match, the trace will be less visible at higher speeds

#

So I may just do that

#

That way both brightness and spindle speed are controlled together

Yes, of course having a child is covered, they want to increase the work force.

tardy badger
#

They (Medicaid) covered my daughters ECGs and whatnot for her heart condition. My insurance won’t cover anything until I’ve paid $3k out of pocket

#

As an adult though, without a referral.. all I got was a annual physical and a mental health check

#

And a $4 copay at urgent care

quartz wren
#

If I want mental health care that doesn't make my condition worse I have to pay out of pocket with the insurance I have.

#

That’s unfortunate that you have to deal with that

#

I imagine due to Covid you can’t go in office to get help applying?

quartz wren
#

I probably could do a teleconference but yeah covid makes it hard to find help

#

I would prefer to just be able to do it myself without needing to have someone throw me through hoops I can't jump through because someone made them intentionally too high.

#

I get that they want to prevent people who don't need it from getting it but it disproportionately affects those who do need it

tardy badger
#

It’s always good to be able to accept help when you need it, especially if you find an organization that genuinely wants to help.

#

You’re right about things being made unintentionally hard

quartz wren
#

It's like... You think I'm not already making life hard on myself due to my issues?

#

There's no reason to make that even harder.

#

I should be able to enter my info, sign a medical release, and have them approve or deny based on my diagnosis.

#

But that's too easy for people who are confirmed in need of help to get it. Gotta make it difficult so they can prove they reeeeeeaaaally need it...

Anyway I probably should stop before I get banned for speaking hard truths.

delicate stream
#

Man, solder bridging these NeoTrellis boards was WAY harder than I thought... I guess solder bridges only want to form when YOU don't want them to!

quartz wren
#

You know

#

It's much easier to bridge if you stick a bit of wire between

delicate stream
#

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but I wanted to do it the hard way XD

quartz wren
#

Tack one end, bend the other down, then tack it, then flow from the first side to the middle, let that solidify, then go from the other side to the middle

#

Same technique as making traces on perfboard

#

Even works with fine coated wire

#

If you know how to easily strip the coating while you are soldering

#

Takes a bit of finesse

delicate stream
#

I think I will just do wire for the rest... Maybe redo that, I don't like how messy it is

quartz wren
#

I mean

#

You already got it halfway for the second technique I know for using wire

#

Second one is tin the pads to be bridged, tin the wire, then push the wire into the tinned pads with your iron

#

Just gotta get rid of the blobs and tin some wires and you can get it much prettier

#

You do want a bit of solder protruding from the pads though, just not that much

#

I started myself a daily routine.

delicate stream
#

I have many daily routines

quartz wren
#

Unlisted items naturally follow from listed ones

#

And as such are unnecessary to list

#

I'm first focusing on fixing my sleep schedule. And no, I don't think it's broken. I'm using the other form of "fix" meaning to hold in place.

#

I found that if I sleep too long I am sluggish all day. 7hr is like my maximum unless it was a lot of physical labor the day before.

#

I miscalculated last night thinking I gave myself 7 but I woke up this morning, felt great, and then someone pointed out that I only put 6 hours of sleep in my schedule. Screw it I'm keeping it.

#

Life is too short to sleep an extra hour every day

delicate stream
#

I miss sleep

quartz wren
#

Dreams are a dreadful place for me and often cause me to wake up in a sour mood if they go on for too long.

#

Last night I was dreaming of things that looked like they were out of those scary stories to tell in the dark books...

#

But fully realized

#

It was awful

#

But I'm awake and none of it followed me to the waking world because I woke up soon enough to not be fully inundated with the horror

#

I mean I remember it but it isn't hanging over me like a shadow threatening to ruin my whole day

#

I think for work today I'm going to finish designing Proto-ITX

#

Or rather

#

Not necessarily finish but make significant progress on

#

I know what I need to do for the pad designs, I know approximately how I want to lay everything out, the only thing holding me back is me

Only difference between life and a nightmare is that this one is shared with others. If you follow the same approach to surviving a nightmare of finding balance and control over your immediate surroundings long enough to solve the problem at hand, you will do fine. In life though, others are struggling through this nightmare right along with you and if we don't help each other we will become each others' monsters.

#

No clue where that came from my brain just kind of threw it out there lol

blissful roost
#

Thankfully, I'm capable of lucid dreaming.. so, nightmares are fun. 😁

delicate stream
#

My problem in nightmares is like... Shadow monsters that distort the rules and are just plain vicious. And I can control dream elements, but it's just a never ending ramping of power and "reality" breaking

thick wind
#

TFW you learn micropython works via UART and is supported on older ESP-based devices...

#

Does lucid dreaming count as a nightmare at that point? I feel like the scariest part of nightmares is the feeling of being there, and the ability to detach from it just kinda breaks the effect.

quartz wren
#

Most of my nightmares start with me having all sorts of strength and sometimes flight, but as time goes on, more and more monsters show up and I lose flight if I have it, I lose the ability to break down doors to run away, and eventually I just can't move my legs fast enough to do more than crawl.

#

Almost feels like an analogy for life...

delicate stream
delicate stream
quartz wren
#

Including the knowledge of whether you are waking or sleeping

#

So I would argue that detachment from it is actually entering a non-lucid state

Does anyone know of a list of "maker" companies? I want a job where I'm building things with other people / making the world better. The only companies I can think of are formlabs, prusa. Right now I feel kinda unfulfilled with tech and a lot of it seems boring to work on or vanity or advertising.

delicate stream
thick wind
#

Outside of the 3D-oprinting industry, you can also consider any of the major "maker" manufacturers and distributors. On the electronics side of makers, there are companies like Adafruit and SparkFun who design and sell these maker-electronics devices all day long, and companies like Digikey who do everything they can to get these product into the hands of whoever's looking for them.

#

MY recommendation is to find a product, series, or manufacturer whose purpose you feel you can resonate with. Then, start your search with all the companies involved in its design and distribution. You might not get a hit right away, but you can certainly grow your search outwards from there.

#

Also, are you looking for something of a specific engineering background, or are you more on the business side of things? Because the latter has way more options than I just mentioned...

nooooooooo, I just accidentally flicked a tiny piece of unknown metal from my table into my miso souuuuuuup

#

Odds it's vibranium and I can get super powers?

lusty fossil
#

I'm disposing of the soup, but I'm not at all happy

#

I want that on the official record

delicate stream
#

RIP soup

#

I should have miso for dinner

lusty fossil
#

hopefully more than just miso

delicate stream
#

I forget the exact flavor, but it's from Vite Ramen

lusty fossil
#

Are they good? And actually healthy? I could see myself eating that if it tastes good

blissful roost
#

..... Sorry

delicate stream
lusty fossil
#

I mean it's ramen, I wasn't expecting super healthy

delicate stream
#

Probably a lot healthier than the $0.15 packets

lusty fossil
#

for shore

delicate stream
#

Oop, no miso tonight, burgers are apparently already in process

lusty fossil
#

I love getting news like that

blissful roost
#

I did feel like ordering for delivery, but I'm poor people this month.

Ehh... Momentary imbalance.

Monetary imbalance too.. poop

What are those nutrition facts

#

I’ve seen straight supplements offer less than that

delicate stream

Nutrition packed soup

thick wind

It’s like someone took a protein and calorie shake and threw it in a blender with a fistful of multivitamins and called it ramen….

#

And a splash of Metamucil

delicate stream
#

Healthy!

#

Unlike the 15¢ packs that are basically sawdust and a LOT of salt

#

Unrelated, I don't understand how people can listen to music in their car SO LOUD that you can hear it 2 blocks away and it sets off car alarms

#

Like... how are you not dead and/or in agonizing pain

#

I mean deaf

lusty fossil
delicate stream
#

I mean, some folks just listen dangerously loud, but there's a point where loud not only means damage, but also causes pain

#

And like, sometimes they're listening loud enough to make my chest hurt!

wooden schooner
# delicate stream Healthy!

MCT oil is generally good on keto, but this is too many carbs to be keto. And outside keto, that's pretty high sat fat.

#

Other than that, this nutritionally enriched ramen looks very cool

#

Also the yellow box on how they treat their employees (if true) is 💯

delicate stream
#

So like I said originally, at least health-ier than cheap packets XD

wooden schooner

...something something first documented case of scurvy in a hundred years...

lol

delicate stream

I'mma put this on one of my PCBs at some point

Hello to you. Considering the fact that a soldering station is expensive I would like to have the possibility to make a small circuit allowing me to vary the voltage or the current in order to vary the heat of a non-variable 65W multimeter bought in trade. Is it possible to vary this heat by changing the voltage or the current?

It has been posted there once already, so posting it multiple times here is only going to hurt your turnout haha

lab has a roof on it

need to add some studs to the back wall and get that up

Rood good

quartz wren
#

rood goof?

#

like a "prank"?

lusty fossil

Is it also unsafe to sit on the top of a step ladder?

quartz wren
#

I mean...

#

I'm not going to condone it

#

but I stand on many things that I shouldn't

lusty fossil
#

a very short ladder

quartz wren
#

being underweight helps with that

lusty fossil
#

It's like 3 feet, my knees are bent with my feet on the ground

quartz wren
#

oh that's fine

#

that's literally the same as sitting on a bar stool

lusty fossil
#

but people fall off of bar stools all the time!

quartz wren
#

that's their problem

delicate stream
#

Roof good

quartz wren
#

I know, I just took it a step further and replaced the f but swapped the letters

delicate stream
#

Oh, lol

#

I hadn't read the subsequent messages XD

delicate stream
quartz wren
#

I just realized why I can draw circles so well freehand...

#

Lots and lots of failed transistor drawings in schematics...

#

And I usually draw up schematics in pen...

#

Because apparently I have a penchant for tedium and rework...

#

But also I think I figured out how to make an oscillator from first principles using things I have around me... Just have to finish the design and plop it in a breadboard

quartz wren
#

Does this make sense or am I not brained

#

The idea being charge the cap and when it goes above zener voltage, trigger transistor to dump cap

#

Added a resistor and LED between the emitter of the transistor and ground

tardy badger

A few loafs of bread 2040

quartz wren
#

Let's see what happens

delicate stream
#

I should buy a loaf of bread

quartz wren
#

Is there a gluten free version?

delicate stream
#

I think they're all gluten free

wooden schooner
#

stares in keto

delicate stream
#

@tardy badger do you have a nutrition sheet for Bread?

tardy badger
#

100% daily header pins recommended for your breadboard

#

Also 0% daily recommended lead (lead free solder)

delicate stream
#

Why does lead solder still exist?

wooden schooner
#

Perhaps we could say NaN%

delicate stream
#

NaN%d

wooden schooner
#

0/0 recommended units of lead

delicate stream
#

I think 100% daily recommended lead works too

quartz wren
delicate stream
#

0% and 100% of 0 is 0

delicate stream
quartz wren
#

Flows better in my experience

#

Though to be fair I have only had access to cheap versions of both

delicate stream
#

Never had a problem with flow

#

I haven't used solder with lead in... 10? 20 years?

quartz wren
#

I've noticed at least with the cheap lead free solder you have to have extra flux to make it not blob and make spikes

#

And I don't have extra flux.

delicate stream
#

I don't use flux XD

#

Well, not added

quartz wren
#

Yeah it just hasn't worked for me

#

With the products I have bought

#

Lead solder always works even when I go bottom of the barrel for price

delicate stream
#

This works perfectly for me

quartz wren
#

And how much is that versus the cost of a 10lb roll of lead solder?

delicate stream
#

It was cheaper than the 1lb roll with lead next to it by like a dollar

quartz wren
#

Huh, pricing must have shifted since I last got solder which was a long time ago because I still have a bunch of the lead solder that's been working for me for years

#

But I won't be using that for commercial products for obvious reasons

delicate stream
#

I buy infrequently too XD

lusty fossil
#

I know of one place in town that uses all lead for all their soldering, but they are
a DoD contractor so I suspect the rules are different

quartz wren
#

Yeah I mean who cares about the environment when you're blowing people up.

#

Obviously not my viewpoint here just being hyperbolic devil's advocate

delicate stream
#

I thought DoD equipment had to be RoHS compliant

tardy badger
#

Depending on where their products are going (like space) there are different rules for solder to use

lusty fossil
#

I'm not sure the reason, but they are producing a lot of decades old tech to interface with old bombers apparently

tardy badger
#

For instance tin solder is a nogo for space

stoic mesa
#

what do they use for space?

quartz wren
tardy badger
#

Copper/lead solder

quartz wren
#

Does the tin end up doing the crumbly crumble?

#

Can't remember the term

delicate stream
quartz wren
#

When it shifts crystalline phase and gets powdery

#

Ahhhhh different tin issue

#

Okay noted will not use tin in my space equipment

delicate stream
#

I think there are other lead free and tin free solder options

quartz wren
#

I mean if you're going to space and the boards aren't meant to interact with biology does it matter if there is lead in it?

lusty fossil
#

the Prime Directive prevents us from polluting alien worlds

quartz wren
#

So you reserve all lead solders for high orbiters

tardy badger
#

But the EU grants exceptions for lead solder use because of not many good options for solder in space

#

It doesn’t matter much for short lived missions

quartz wren
#

Why not spot weld for things that need longevity?

tardy badger
#

You ever spot welded 0402/0201 components?

#

Plus you have to provide a lot of current which would surely destroy the components

quartz wren
#

I meant for inter-board connection mostly but that just put a hilarious image in my head

#

Could it be done with precision robots?

#

Just use slightly larger components which has the added advantage of being more robust

#

Especially if you upscale your IC dies to the largest they can be

lusty fossil
#

larger boards weigh more and cost more to send to space

quartz wren
#

Make it in space

#

With local resources

#

😉

lusty fossil
#

Beltalowda!

quartz wren
#

That's where I'm heading as my life goals but we know how those go

#

Ceres is my actual destination

#

And anyone willing to at very least not hamper progress is welcome. Loafers and all, just don't get in the way.

#

And if you want to help you reap the direct rewards

#

Which is why my lab needs to have the ability to do long duration space habitat simulations with full regenerative life support

#

Eventually

#

For now I'm starting with just the ability to fully seal and pressurize it with no leaks

#

(except the ones I intentionally introduce)

delicate stream
#

I claim Venus

quartz wren
#

Fine with me but may I offer some suggestions?

delicate stream
#

I have a plan :0

quartz wren
#

Balloons with solar panels and wireless charge pads for drones.

#

(for initial exploration)

delicate stream
#

Yeah stage 1 is floaty balloons

#

More like air boats

quartz wren
#

Yeah I just meant before sending people

delicate stream
#

I've got a design for a thermosiphon to steal heat from below

quartz wren
#

Noice

#

Based on the name I'm guessing thermodynamically driven?

delicate stream
#

Yup!

#

Basically this, but instead of sun, you have hot Venusian atmosphere

quartz wren
#

The reason ceres is my goal is that most of my projects require a high level of vacuum lol

#

So basically exactly how I imagined it
