... it is like the energy is equal to the heat +(it is a minus) work. both of them are in joules, in the case it doesn't receive or give heat(supposing an ideal situation), the physical work will decide if the gas will increase it's temperature or decrease it's temperature, if it diminute the pressure and increase the volume it will be colder the oposite will make it hotter, that equation that I posted is not useful at this situation because you have PV at the same side(one increases and the other decreases) and it doesn't give the energy in joules... the equation used is U = q - t ... U is de difference of energy, basically it is related with the temperature. When you make the gas pass through a bigger place it decrease the temperature, when it pass in a small place it makes the gas hotter, this is what the refrigerator does. You are applying work and taking out work with the walls of the gas. When you use the deodorant, what is happening is even that it is going in a small place, instantly after this it go to a way bigger place ( your room) and it decreases the temperature following First Law of Thermodynamics. Science.

#

You can even build a refrigerator using a rubber band.

#

How does your project look now?

honest jolt
jovial path
#

Nice ✅

#

Me and my father bought the material to do a project with cube LED's

#

Did you buy the PCB already made

#

With all the material? Microcontrollers, etc...

#

Or you're designing and programming everything?

jovial path
#

I think the engineers that makes the libraries for the code of these kind of projects are so hardworkers... I really admire them.

honest jolt
#

(sorry for not responding I was coding something else XD)
I actually just bought a box of 1000 LEDs (200 for red, yellow, green, blue, and white) and so I just used blue. Then I plan on using a "double sided PCB kit" board (which is a perf board but green and the holes are pre-tinned so soldering is much easier to it) and then I haven't decided on the microcontroller but I'm probably gonna use my Arduino Mega clone after it decides to unbrick itself and actually show up as a serial port. 😦

#

(so basically "from scratch")

jovial path
#

And the libraries?

#

What library will you use?

#

What ci will you use to handle the LED matrix?

#

Is there a MAX... For it?

honest jolt
#

I didn't think that far ahead yet 🙃
Would like some suggestions 😅
I also may or may not be afraid to ruin it after spending hours on it fixing it so that's why I may or may not be procrastinating 😂

jovial path
#

The one I have here I think everything is pre-made includive the code. I think.

honest jolt
#

(Also before doing it I would highly suggest buying a bunch of solder and make sure your soldering iron is in good condition. Saying I used a meter length of solder on it would not be an exaggeration.)

jovial path
#

You just have to make the cube, solder the components in the PCB and put the pre existing code.

jovial path
honest jolt
#

Do you have a link to the kit? I would like to see how they designed it compared to my homemade version :p

jovial path
#

Here is an electronics house.

honest jolt
#

Unfortunately my family really dislikes the smell of soldering 😦

jovial path
honest jolt
jovial path
#

Think your matrix has so many pins... You need a special ci to handle this.

#

And make it easier to the microcontroller to work.

#

With less pins.

#

It uses SPI to do it I think.

#

It makes a conversion.

#

Is like a code/ci to handle a lot of pins with just a few pins.

honest jolt
#

I was thinking of using something more powerful like an ESP32 and using a bunch of shift registers but I'm trying to not buy anything for this project so I guess I'm just gonna end up using the mega lol

jovial path
#

Shift registers.... These are memories for me.

honest jolt
#

lol

jovial path
#

But they are, they store bits.

#

Paralell/Serial

Serial/serial

#

#

My father made a project in the past using shift registers.

#

It made cool patterns.

#

But I really so not know how the code looked like.

#

But it was 10 LEDs.

#

A shift register and an Arduino.

#

I think it is cool, but it is too much contact.

When the player hits other it looks like is intentionally to make the other fall in the rigid ice!

#

I like how the game goes, it looks like football but it is violent. I think it should have more strict rules for safety and safer clothes.

ancient kindle

it is intentional

umbral phoenix

the same could be said about hockey

it's not the intention but it happens

It will be very weird to take a clock like this with me to a test. They do not allow digital clocks ( I only have digital wristwatch, not analogic ones). I tought in going to the shopping to buy one, but I would loose too much study time for the drive licensing exam. I didn't buy before because I asked to my teacher if they had a clock in the test room, and he said: no, it made me completely surprised because that would be very strange, I was asking just to confirm the obvious, and they do not have a clock in the room. But my exam will be in a computer, so I hope it will have a clock in the software.

My advisor had a lot of pushback with how the senior design course/projects were run. It was all academic with very little incentive to do something new or out of the ordinary.

drowsy zephyr

#

... I was reading To Kill a Mocking Bird for the first time it is more interesting (and it is a more evolving story)

#

It kind of gives me a trauma... I am in 50% of the book and it is really bad the way a judger treats an inocent black person accused of a thing he did not do. I have brazillian books writen in the same time it passes To Kill a Mocking Bird, the name is "Menino do Engenho"

#

It has a very similar situation found in To Kill a Mocking Bird if I am not making a mistake, I read "Menino do Engenho" in the second semester of 2011.

#

But the judger is not a graduated judger, it is a very influencial farmland owner but he stood in the side of the innocent person that was accused of cheating, because everything told he was innocent and he was not arrested for what he did. Then there was a phrase in the book that said " the influence/leadership of the farmland owner(I forgot his name) in not based on force/violence, but in love". It kind of remembers my father, he was never used force or violence against me and it worked: I never used drugs, I never went to parties with alchool and drugs, I do not like tatoos (or similar), I was the best student (or one of the bests) in different schools, I have a lot of compliments from many professors, directors and school staff...( in all my life, specially in high school) and I help my father in the wheelchair and I will stay helping him forever, and he did not asked me for that. No force or violence from him even when he walked in the past. This must not be perfection for the whole world (or it is, I do not know) or your parents, but for sure it is for my parents :)

delicate stream

It's hard to prove he took the idea, plus you didn't have a patent or anything... and no NDA or contract

jovial path
#

That is it, most of the cases I know were against big companies.

#

But there was civil cases too.

delicate stream
#

I mean, yeah, individuals can win cases against big companies, but you need sufficient proof

jovial path
#

If you are right it is very likely that you will win.

#

If you have a smart lawyer.

polar bloom
#

If they at some point promised to compensate you for the idea or the work you put in, you might have something to go on. But there doesn't seem to be any actual IP infringement here.

delicate stream
#

Even with a great lawyer, you still need evidence

dusk oracle
#

i think i have enough evidence

delicate stream
#

You can still make your own, they can't really patent a display on an MCU

#

And even if they have copyright on their code, they can't sue you for your own implementation of the same concept

#

I mean, they can patent their exact hardware, but not the idea

#

And if you DID try to sue them and they came up with the idea themselves, before you said anything, they can prove they were working on it before

#

So you want to be CERTAIN before you try a lawyer. But if you get a free consultation, they'll tell you if you have a case

tardy badger
#

Honestly it isn’t worth pursuing

#

Ideas are a dime a dozen, it’s execution that matters. Continue to iterate on your product and release it

#

If you’re works better then the proof will be in the results.

#

There are tons of companies doing the same things

#

I mean, if Adafruit wasn’t open source and maker friendly, they could easily go after companies making similar or copy cat products

#

But they don’t, they just decided they would put more effort into making their products better, far better supported, and also focus on the community they build their products for.

#

Those are the differentiating factors on execution.

#

I have an example of this in my own experience.

A few years ago (like a decade ago) I came up with and started working on an idea for an app to order ahead for coffee shops where you could just pick up your order and go.

I didn’t get very far because of life and all. Another company basically did the same thing as me and they launched at a few universities including the one I was at. I was mad and wanted to sue because they “stole” my idea. I had receipts of the idea and starting to execute. It didn’t matter. There wasn’t a lawyer I could find to support my claims. It’s when I learned there are no original ideas, just execution of ideas that matters.

#

So moral of the story, someone did your idea? Okay just keep working on your idea and block out the noise.

burnt tendon
#

Yah, I am a bit of a broken record about this particular annoying story, but I was working at a past employer on a bang-up thing that would totally win the marketplace.

#

They declared that nobody would buy it, laid us all off, and I was totally OK with that because I was done with that particular employer and was already interviewing.

jovial path
#

When you have an idea before saying to everybody patent it.

#

always!

burnt tendon
#

You can now buy a version of this off of Google as part of their cloud offering, plus there's a hot new startup working on a artisinal version thereof, plus IBM has some products in that space....

jovial path
#

it's the rule.

#

this is education.

#

there's weird people around the world doing weird things and you must defend yourself from them.

jovial path
burnt tendon
#

Like, 🤷 , we're spending a lot of effort on the notion of a protection of ideas and most of the time, if a regular old inventor in their basement cooks something up and patents it, like 99% of the time, they end up getting screwed out of the profits of their investment, so pretty much all the patent system does is provide fodder for patent trolls.

jovial path
#

and it is valid internationally.

#

I have access to a lot of lawyers due to family, but it is as easy for me as to everybody else.

#

it's law and it is the same to everybody.

burnt tendon
#

And, likewise, a patent isn't about an idea. It's about an invention.

jovial path
#

I am not being specific.

burnt tendon
#

Yah, but the problem is, there's a world of difference between "Hey, someone should do a thing that does this and that" and a practical apparatus that uses items A through R to do a useful thing. The patent covers only the second.

#

And, likewise, the law is a perfectly reasonable abstract idea but the access to justice is very much not equal and the difference between what a person can take on under a contingency and a large corporation's ability to bury you under mountains of legal paperwork and arrange to have the suit occur in front of a judge of their choosing does not make the legal system, especially in the US, fair.

#

Similarly, there are plenty of countries that simply do not recognize patents from other countries or effectively do not recognize patents from other countries if you are not a local company.

#

It's like, my uncle invented a bunch of interesting things. I see some of them in the stores. Most of the time, he got screwed out of them, so he'd go on an invent a different version along the same lines and then he'd get screwed out of that.

#

So, like, if you have a cool idea and don't want someone to steal it, keep it to yourself. If you look at most of the patents in the modern patent regime, you'll discover that they are carefully constructed to separate that-which-you-can-sue-someone-for and that-which-represents-the-real-secret-sauce-of-the-idea separate anyway.

jovial path
#

I think it is very hard to defend a very good idea.

#

actually I think ( I think ) it is impossible.

#

You can't keep it only to yourself really...

#

and if I ask my brother or the other lawyers that I know they'll probabily tell me the same.

#

It is like Windows defending from piracy or anything like this in the worst case.

Why is this a common depiction of a black hole

#

That curving around it still looks so odd to me

#

Do black holes even have rings most of the time?

crystal ore
#

Well, black holes by themselves are just black. The only way you see them is if they're swallowing matter, which forms a disc as it falls in, so that's the convention.

#

The distortion of the shape is caused by gravitational lensing of the disc, which is why you can see its "back side" to the top and bottom. This has been fairly difficult to visualize until recently, but they put a lot of effort into getting it right for the Interstellar movie, and that's the new standard everyone compares to.

#

Hmmm the commodore 64 keyboard was an 8x8 matrix plus two special keys (Restore and Caps Lock) that were outside the matrix; so it used 8+8+2=18 pins altogether. An inconvenient 6x11 matrix could have done it in 17. Just contemplating making a keyboard that matches the layout but for use on a modern PC directly. A foolish project, I would never use it much.

crystal ore
#

I think the RESTORE key was directly connected to a non-maskable interrupt input, so they wouldn't have wanted it in the matrix anyway.

#

Didn't realize that Caps Lock was special, though... interesting quirk.

sick adder
#

errr and I think it was shift-lock, not caps-lock. easier to implement.

I'm a little surprised shift-lock didn't just close the same switch as left-shift, or that the left and right shifts were ganged together. but they must not have needed to save another I/O.

sick adder
#

too bad there are no new locking cherry-style keyswitches. If only I'd known to stock up 7 years ago before Cherry stopped making 'em

ancient kindle
#

I found a fatal flaw with my macro pad design thing

#

Cherry switches don’t align perfectly in the kicad footprint I used

#

They can rotate like 30 degrees

#

So all of the keycaps are at different angles

sick adder
#

Yeah I saw something similar with my design. It's surprising how far the keyswitch can twist. If I assemble the 2nd one I'll do it with a 3D printed plate, which will restrict the key rotation. I have a feeling a soldering jig could do the same thing, if you didn't want to add a plate @ancient kindle

#

the "7" on the left I think is the worst and that's after tried correcting it; the right is fitted BUT NOT SOLDERED with the keys snapped into a 3d printed plate.

ancient kindle
#

A more restrictive footprint might work too

#

like very small holes for the legs

sick adder
#

I think this is also why there are the "fixation pins" on some cherry compatible keyswitches.

ancient kindle
#

Yeah

sick adder
#

fwiw I used kicad's standard footprint and yeah it's pretty loose

#

vs what I think are kailh switches

ancient kindle
#

A case would probably help here too

#

Keep them all aligned

sick adder
#

that may be what I mean when I say "plate". The piece that the keys can all be snapped into before soldering.

though the macropad also uses the sockets and those don't allow the keyswitch to rotate as much

jovial path

It very interesting how fireworks work. Each one has a different chemical element that burns with a different color. My chemistry book had a very small list of some chemical components used and it's colors. The different colors are due to Bohr's chemical model of elements. It is like different molecules has different levels of energy to the electrons jump one to another and depending on this jump they emit a different frequency of light. The packages of energy received (it is like a button, you can give it different forces, but until you reach the right force you can't press it) are discret so are the emission of energy in the jump.

Apparently they found a planet orbiting in a trinary star system. https://manyworlds.space/2016/07/07/three-star-ballet-with-exoplanet/

It hardly seems possible, but researchers have detected a planet in apparently stable orbit within a three star system -- a configuration now known as a trinary.

The ubiquity of binary stars has been understood for some time, and the presence of exoplanets orbiting around and within them is no lo

You can make high voltage supplies too. But the caveat is it is very dangerous

The reality is if you have the knowledge you can do it

jovial path

But I want it to be pretty.

#

And to look real and professional.

#

And huge.

tardy badger
#

It’s usually a matter of if you should.

#

The history of hot water tanks is a good example of how much effort has gone into taking something mundane and making it work very well. But the caveats of the history of them is how dangerous the process was and how many ordinary people died before they became mostly safe

jovial path
#

I want to order like I order PCBA, there are companies that do this?

tardy badger
#

Contract manufacturers usually offer varying levels of product support

#

Some will even do standards and conformity testing for national certification processes

#

But you can do a lot with a 3D printer

jovial path
#

Ok. How can I use a 3D printer to make a transformer.

#

A plastic transformer?!

#

I want them to put all the components in the electrical project, like PCBA, in the case of an air condictioner: the cooler, the motor... Etc

#

But, my project, everything in the place that I want and all the parts that I want, just like PCBA.

tardy badger
#

For the enclosure of an AC unit you’d need some place that makes sheet metal enclosures

#

You would send that enclosure to a contract manufacturer

#

The contract manufacturer would probably assemble your PCB and then end product

#

But that’s usually very expensive

jovial path
tardy badger
#

For instance plenty of contract manufacturers in the US cost $100/hr + the cost of the components and other materials

#

A project like making an AC unit could easily cost $2500+ in man hours alone

#

It’s not impossible, it’s just really expensive

#

You should only ever consider a contract manufacturer to make a complete product when you plan to sell a commercial product

#

Using one for PCBA is fine

#

But typically there is minimum quantity and some parts they likely won’t have that you would have to add yourself

#

Most people just learn how to do most of it themselves and source as much fully assembled components as they can.

#

3D printers, basic wood working and metal working tools, a soldering iron or hot air reflow station

jovial path
#

(Is it better to ask to my professors?)

Making stuff to sell is the easy part that ultimately everyone wants to do, which is great because people should make things. The hard part is selling it. Some things just sell with little effort at all, it’s rare that this happens. Most products never are successful. Most fall time obscurity because they didn’t do enough, did too much, there just wasn’t a need, or a variety of other factors. Sometimes poor planning, lack of reinvestment, etc…

Engineering is fun and important, but learning how to sell is just as important as an engineer.

I hate risks. Actually I go to school to not take risks really, to be solid and stable. I see a lot of books about Steve Jobs, and other sucessful CEO's and these books tell: risk taking is important, but for me is a thing I should not really do at all, never, if feels like skydiving with not a very reliable material, actually you go to school to have the best skydiving material, this is not a risk at all.

tardy badger
#

Learning itself is a risk. You risk being wrong and wasting time

jovial path
#

I learnt english making a bunch of mistakes, but you can't make mistakes often with money.

tardy badger
#

But the reward of learning is that you understand that living is always a risk. Walking, breathing. Risk exists, but the things that are normal are just risks we’ve learned to mitigate

#

So long as you don’t break the law, money risks are minor

#

More money is printed every day

jovial path

I do not see like this at all.

tardy badger
#

But it’s true

My life is a good example of that

jovial path

What’s at stake is a risk. I’m just arguing semantics. If you just assume nothing has risks you will have a very sore realization when risks do compound.

#

And it’s not a silly idea

#

Not understanding risks and risk mitigation can lead to serious injury over time.

#

Massive engineering failures happened because risk or stakes as you would put it we’re not properly understood or just ignored

Is this another line you put on the discord argument score board?

Guys, quick question for powerlogging, if i were to calculate the total of the power that's used by an electrical component, for example, i have a power logger that logs the power used by a device in every second, can i just add them up or do i have to divide it by 3600 to get its mWh?

crystal ore
#

If you are getting one second of a milliwatt measurement of power, that's one milliwatt-second of energy. To convert to milliwatt-hours, you indeed need to divide by 3600.

#

(To help your intuition, think of milliwatts as like the miles-per-hour number on your speedometer. To get the total distance your car travels, you don't do "65 + 64 + 65 + 66" and conclude you traveled 260 miles in four seconds, but you have to divide by the appropriate ratio of time too.)
