On 3Ds Max? It existed in that time? What program did you use? Wow, you're a pioneer! I made some animations on AutoDesk Maya when I was at high school. Like a jumping Squireel, a ball bouncing, a spaceship launching, a mecatronical machine moving and taking a box... But I never rendered really, you just press some buttons, right? Like libraries...

I really have no idea. I know I used the program "fractint" in that era (found it on another of these disks) but what those came from I do not know

I think Pixar's software was free that time? The Renderman. It was my dream to use it in high school but I think only Pixar's employees can use it in the 21th century. I am still amazed how they have their own software for using in their movies. I think most of companies just use AutoDesk's products. I am really sad about Pixar, I applied to an interniship there, they said very good things about my curriculum and my activities, but I applied in a position that was not related with my major so they could not accept me. There was not a position for Electrical and Electronincs engineers... I applied in the non related position because I studied animation deeply in high school and I tought it could be fun to be at Pixar for a very short period of time, but mostly because I would animate with very good professionals. I want to be an engineer to be clair, but animation was such a good hobbie in high school, I tought I could take some advantage of it at Pixar.

Well at least that means you're probably not too concerned with source control or anything like that. If you have any old screen you want to use, you can probably take it apart and replace the driver board with something that supports HDMI and battery power?

#

I think you can get refurbished monitors for pretty cheap, but you'll have to look at those chinese marketplace websites for the LCD driver board.

Might be able to get a thrift shop monitor for cheap

And an HDMI to DVI adapter perhaps

The aforementioned driver boards often work on 12V if you want to go that route.

Would it be cheaper to buy a recycled laptop and use the screen/other parts, or buy a used screen?

Since the end goal is a laptop sized screen, I'm thinking a used laptop would be a quicker route to a solution. And dead laptops can often be had cheaply.

In this time of the year here in Brazil, people dress like this (it is very similar to cowboys in the US) and we dance related musics, there are a lot of fireworks, there are some types of fireworks for kids too, people make a fire pit in front of the houses (but not in the capital at all) and people eat a lot of food based mostly on corn, they prepare foods with the fire pit like cheese ,corn, etc... It is very fun. In this photo it is me(engineer student) in the right, my brother(Lawer) in the left and our friend(Pshycologist I think) in the middle. At the time we didn't had Arduino's but we had Windows XP and 97. The fire pit is a real fire pit, made with wood, our family liked the vertical fire pit, it was a lot of vertical woods together and we put fire in the top.

tardy badger

Loki isn’t a bad guy

#

#

There’s a very big difference between antagonists and anti heroes.

#

An antihero (sometimes spelled as anti-hero) or antiheroine is a main character in a story who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes such as idealism, courage, and morality. Although antiheroes may sometimes perform actions that are morally correct, it is not always for the right reasons, often acting primarily out of self-interest ...

It dropped enough that I'm holding until the next jump

I think 2 years ago (or 3 years ago I don't know) I watched a TED talk of him talking something about this the EarthShots (or something like this), that we should have something like a goal to make the earth's environment clean. Hum... I am not being precise because I watch it so long ago. Good to see that he's doing something about this now...

#

I wish I could create a green transistor, green ci's or 100% green computers, that would be so great... Like a transistor made from a seed... Green super computers... We need so much to take care of earth's environment, there is the greenhouse effect, termical inversion, heat islands, and a bunch of other effects caused by global warming, this is pretty bad. The ph of the river that covers Aracaju (my city) is way lower(more acid) than 10 years ago according to studies that a friend made in his research in environmental engineering...

Moar nuclear, less coal

real falcon
#

im kinda meh on nuclear

#

moar solar, moar wind, more other sources of power!

delicate stream
#

They're all good. But nuclear is compact, stable, safe, and when the fuel is handled properly and used in different types of reactors to take maximum advantage, clean

#

But we need to get rid of coal and oil

real falcon
#

then theres 1000 years of storage

#

what you said is true. im concerned about after, not the process

delicate stream
#

There are newer reactor types that can continue to draw power from the waste material of fission reactors, so we're not just filling a hole with radioactive materials. But at least if it is stored, it's not in the atmosphere like all the byproducts of burning things

zealous scaffold
#

nuclear waste can be largely recycled. US of A just chooses not to. Other countries do.

#

its a very effective stopgap while we perfect fusion, which is about 15 years off

delicate stream
#

Well... Who knows how far off fusion is, people have been saying "10-20 years off" for decades. But fission is cleaner than fossil fuels!

polar bloom
#

Wind and solar are only clean if you can hide the wind farms and solar farms away in a desert somewhere. Having these massive wind turbines next to your house is no fun.

delicate stream
#

Clean as in green, not causing environmental damage

#

Aesthetics clean is different XD but function over form, yo

ancient kindle
#

Nuclear waste can be used in several more layers of reactors before it is truly waste that needs to be disposed of fully

#

Sadly we don’t invest in those extra layers so we shove all the waste in a mountain to be forgotten about

jovial path
#

I think the best clean energy is Solar's Energy, Nuclear Energy is great but it is dangerous!

ancient kindle
#

The issue with solar is how much space is takes up

jovial path
#

It will be more efficient in the future.

delicate stream
#

It's not dangerous unless you're using an ancient reactor design and operate it improperly. That stigma is unwarranted -- modern reactors are safe and efficient

crystal ore
#

I'd say the storage issue is the bigger problem with solar. You need to figure out how to power things at night, too.

ancient kindle
#

It’s a good option to like fill up excess space but it can’t come close to the density of nuclear

jovial path
#

Nuclear energy is like eating too much sugar food, it has a lot of energy but it is bad.

#

Solar energy is like eating vegetables.

delicate stream
#

It's not bad, it's not dangerous

#

Again, unless you do it wrong, but modern reactors are safe

ancient kindle
#

The few major nuclear disasters have been from negligence of safety procedures

#

Chernobyl was caused when they disabled safety features ON PURPOSE

#

Idiots

delicate stream
#

And most didn't result in nearly as much harm as sometimes is portrayed. And overall deaths are far far FAR lower than deaths from complications of fossil fuels

ancient kindle
#

Depends on how you want to define fossil fuels lol

delicate stream
#

Nuclear reactors are often portrayed as ticking time bombs that could explode at any moment... And that's just not accurate

ancient kindle
#

We have been using some form of fossil fuels for thousands of years

#

Solar is a good stopgap if we use it to get away from coal immediately

#

But it’s not sustainable with our level of growth as a society

delicate stream
#

Anything we got out of the ground that used to be biomatter -- coal, oil, anything that puts out greenhouse gases

#

Yeah, photovoltaic cells can't provide enough power to replace coal outright by itself

late fulcrum
#

Yes, fossil fuels are stored solar energy, which is ultimately nuclear energy (which in turn is ultimately solar). However fossil fuels are also sequestered carbon and burning them re-releases that carbon into the atmosphere, which causes a whole host of problems.

ancient kindle
#

Remember that we stopped using renewable energy because it wasn’t dense enough for our uses

#

If we try going 100% solar there’s either going to be most of our inhabitable land covered in solar cells or we go back to dirty power

delicate stream
#

If we go to full photovoltaic, yeah

ancient kindle
#

A dyson sphere would be cool tho

delicate stream
#

There's also solar thermal power, which is higher density, but has other implications

late fulcrum
#

How about the unhabitable land? There's also wind, tidal, and geothermal energy available. There's a whale of a lot of energy available, even at the paltry efficiency we can currently manage. Some conservation would also go a long way (goodbye cryptocurrency and data centers running on wasteful outdated technology)

ancient kindle
#

Goodbye proof of work crypto*

#

That’s the wasteful stuff

late fulcrum
#

That would be a more accurate statement, yes

#

A surprising percentage of proof of work crypto is being done in Iceland, using geothermal power and ambient cooling, amusingly enough.

delicate stream
#

Multiple types good. Although we need to be careful -- putting too much of one type of power collection might impact the local environment. But it's a big planet

ancient kindle
#

And then there’s 30% of the Bitcoin network, in china and running off the same coal mine

delicate stream
#

Thankfully China banned a lot of proof of work Crypto, so there's gonna be a drop in power consumption there

ancient kindle
#

Sadly they banned it for the wrong reasons

#

late fulcrum
#

It is possible to do a good thing for bad reasons

delicate stream
#

Well... Reasons aside, it's banned, so good for the environment

ancient kindle
#

Except now they have an ewaste problem

#

With all the miners

delicate stream
#

The non-mining GPUs will get used

ancient kindle
#

The ASICs are the problem

delicate stream
#

But the mining cards... Aside from people like me, yeah, they're ewaste

ancient kindle
#

They have exactly 1 use

delicate stream
#

And ASICs, yeah

#

I hope to get a bunch of mining cards cheap

ancient kindle
#

Hopefully it reduces the price of gpus

delicate stream
#

There's already drops in prices

late fulcrum
#

The ASICs are just silicon, epoxy, and some metals: not too terrible as ewaste goes.

ancient kindle
#

But I don’t think the drop will be significant since Chia uses them for plotting

delicate stream
#

Chinese miners are liquidating

#

Chia doesn't use GPU

ancient kindle
#

Yes it does, for plotting

delicate stream
#

Chia only uses disk space, it doesn't use a GPU like Etherium

ancient kindle
#

The GPU is used for plotting

#

1 time

#

Then it uses disk space

delicate stream
#

Where did you get that?

late fulcrum
#

It's true that they generally end up in landfill, but chips are not very large, nor do they leach much in the way of toxic chemicals. It's disappointing, but a small enough fraction of the problem that there are other, better targets.

delicate stream
#

Besides, even if that's accurate, that doesn't require the other dozen GPUs in an Etherium rig

#

Wet need better recycling initiatives. But more importantly, REDUCTION initiatives

#

And reuse

#

There's a reason it's "reduce, reuse, recycle" in that order!

ancient kindle
#

Ah I see they didn’t clone that part of burst

late fulcrum

Alas, I was unable to repair my TV for a fourth time after the lightning storm and had to reluctantly replace it.

delicate stream
# jovial path Just like any other company.

Uhh... No. Not every company is like that. AMD I've only need to contact a couple times, and they fulfilled the warranty fine. EVGA goes above and beyond, and will sometimes give you a BETTER product as a replacement (one time I got a 1070 Ti to replace a 1070 that had failed).

late fulcrum

On the upside, I was able to leapfrog two generations of display technology in the process.

jovial path
delicate stream

Intel resorts to lies and technicalities to get out of warranty coverage -- my brother sent in a failed motherboard, and they sent it back with a letter saying it couldn't be covered "due to physical damage; bent pins", but there was no damage, and they refused to do anything.

I can't imagine doing ANY serious work on a Chromebook

#

But the engineers that I know

#

Do not use i7

#

It is i5

#

Or even i3...

ancient kindle
#

They don’t have to have the best of the best

#

They use what gives them the best experience in their specific position

delicate stream
#

Chromebooks don't have much power, you can't use them for heavy applications

jovial path
ancient kindle
#

what

delicate stream
#

I've known engineers in Brazil... They didn't use Chromebooks

jovial path
#

Chromebook doesn't support many engineering software I think.

#

But you can use Multsim Live for example.

#

Simple things.

delicate stream
#

Yeah, simple things

ancient kindle
#

chromeos does not support the vast majority of developer toolchains

#

it requires hacking to get even just a terminal up

#

that makes it useless to them for even just simple git operations

delicate stream
#

ChromeOS isn't really good for more than basic things like Google searches, writing in Google docs, and maybe looking at your photos... And the hardware it's on can't do anything serious in terms of processing

ancient kindle
#

they might give them to like HR or something

delicate stream
#

Yeah

ancient kindle
#

but developers? no chance

delicate stream
#

Nope

ancient kindle
#

they have so much money that it makes no sense to skimp out on hardware

delicate stream
#

And there's not a developer mode that lets it do whatever you want in ChromeOS

jovial path
jovial path
#

It is just my opnion.

delicate stream
#

I mean... They can be good for students in some contexts? And whether Google employees use it or not is a matter of fact, not opinion. But some Google employees using them is different than all employees using them for everything at Google. The only thing I can imagine a developer using one for is to give a presentation in a meeting in slideshow form instead of lugging a workstation laptop

ancient kindle
#

lol

delicate stream
#

I mean, that's old, but... Ha

delicate stream
#

Yeah, I'd imagine Windows or Linux

ancient kindle
#

or maybe an unrestricted edition of chrome os

#

(so linux)

delicate stream
#

Life is a pain without some sort of domain setup

#

It wouldn't surprise me if there's an internal Linux distro specifically for Google

thats really what chromeos is

their front facing linux distro

More reliable I think.

ancient kindle

late fulcrum

It's easier to get where you need to be when you need to be -- no worrying about bus schedules or anything, you can fill the trunk with stuff if you need to instead of trying to carry it... everything is easier with a car

jovial path
#

I would like to get a car from 2010 or something like this.

#

but my father wants a new one for me.

#

he thinks old cars breaks too much

delicate stream
#

Pros and cons both ways... New costs a lot more, but there can be problems with used cars

#

Whether a used car is a good idea depends on the make/model and how well it was cared for -- like, there are Hondas from the 80s that are well cared for, over a million miles, and show no signs of stopping. But if the car is treated like junk and never cared for... not gonna last

#

And some cars just can't last no matter how well you care for it because it's a bad car

I have a fondness for fleet duty cars, they're cost effective, long lasting, easy to work on, parts are cheap and common, and lots of people are familiar with them.

If you run a humidifier and a dehumidifier (or AC) in the same room such that the temperature and humidity both stay the same as they were, where does most of the energy dissipate to?

#

does phase change of the coolant account for only a small amount of the energy, compared to how much is blown outside as heat? or am I misunderstanding the way the coolant is used

ancient kindle
#

The phase change occurs as a result of the change in temperature of the coolant

#

Phase changes themselves don’t produce extra energy

wooden schooner
ancient kindle
#

Phase changes are the result of a change of energy in a system

wooden schooner
#

yes, my understanding is that as heat is added to a material, the temperature levels out for a bit as the phase changes, and the energy truly goes into the phase change

thick wind
#

Phase changes do, in fact require or expend some extra energy. It's why the evaporation of water provides additional cooling to a surface beneath it. It's why our bodies produce sweat, for instance.

#

I think the debate here is not the effect of a phase change, but rather the definition of energy generation?

wooden schooner
#

I'm just wondering how the energy absorbed by phase change factors into the dehumidifier scenario above. The answer might be simply "it's insignificant compared to the heat transfer from blowing hot air outside"

#

It seems to me that all the cooling has to come from the phase change, since no other component absorbs heat. Then the heat dissipated by the other components doing work is blown outside

#

I guess that answers my original question (albeit not sure if it's correct): heat enters the compressor of the dehumidifier and goes toward condensing the coolant; heat dissipates out from the other components; the excess heat is directed toward hot air that is blown outside

ancient kindle

#

Maybe another way to consider it too is that for a refrigeration cycle to work, you don't actually need to have phase changes

#

The way I learned it is that phase changes are just a more convenient way to get the most out of your refrigeration cycle. If you had a source of cool water, like from a well or river, you could technically refrigerate a building with that, no phase change required. What the phase change does is allow you to absorb a lot of energy with a given amount of working fluid.

#

The phase change, practically speaking, lets you use much smaller evaporators and condensers

#

Either way, your working fluid (whether it's refrigerant or maybe just chilled water) is what absorbs energy and moves it to where you want it, in this case it would move energy outside of a room to cool it
