On 3Ds Max? It existed in that time? What program did you use? Wow, you're a pioneer! I made some animations on AutoDesk Maya when I was at high school. Like a jumping Squireel, a ball bouncing, a spaceship launching, a mecatronical machine moving and taking a box... But I never rendered really, you just press some buttons, right? Like libraries...
I really have no idea. I know I used the program "fractint" in that era (found it on another of these disks) but what those came from I do not know
I think Pixar's software was free that time? The Renderman. It was my dream to use it in high school but I think only Pixar's employees can use it in the 21th century. I am still amazed how they have their own software for using in their movies. I think most of companies just use AutoDesk's products. I am really sad about Pixar, I applied to an interniship there, they said very good things about my curriculum and my activities, but I applied in a position that was not related with my major so they could not accept me. There was not a position for Electrical and Electronincs engineers... I applied in the non related position because I studied animation deeply in high school and I tought it could be fun to be at Pixar for a very short period of time, but mostly because I would animate with very good professionals. I want to be an engineer to be clair, but animation was such a good hobbie in high school, I tought I could take some advantage of it at Pixar.
I mean, that's a really gnasty industry to be in. I'm glad I didn't end up in it, really.
Yeah but that name caries so much weight
You whip out that you interned at pixar and suddenly people perk up
Can any of you recommend a good screen for a laptop with a Raspberry Pi? I need it to be under $50.00 and hopefully over 8 inches. Thanks!
Ooooh, under $50 is a bit on the tough side. At $50, we're usually talking 5" HDMI display. If you're looking for anything larger than 7" with that budget, your best bet is to find a recycled screen and try to buy a suitable driver board from banggood/aliexpress?
Are you trying to build a kit, or is this for a personal project?
Yeah, recycled laptop screens can be a great bargain
Please don't block Tor users, Adafruit 😦
*adafruit isn't blocking you, the CDN they hired is
you can configure cloudfare to not block Tor
I have reset my circuits.
maybe it's a temporary issue.. 🤷♂️
yes, you are right. still a 'feature' that is controllable by cloudfare clients. at least as far as my cloudfare experience goes which admitedly is limited and probably outdated.
anyway, just thought I'd point out it is happening to tor users.
most people don't main tor so this is a new issue
To be even more precise it wasn't even an animating position (the time I applied they were not hiring interniship students for animation).
good morning!
morning all
Personal project
Well at least that means you're probably not too concerned with source control or anything like that. If you have any old screen you want to use, you can probably take it apart and replace the driver board with something that supports HDMI and battery power?
I think you can get refurbished monitors for pretty cheap, but you'll have to look at those chinese marketplace websites for the LCD driver board.
Might be able to get a thrift shop monitor for cheap
And an HDMI to DVI adapter perhaps
Well, if it's for a laptop, it's gonna need to have some modification done to remove the AC power requirement.
The aforementioned driver boards often work on 12V if you want to go that route.
Would it be cheaper to buy a recycled laptop and use the screen/other parts, or buy a used screen?
Laptops are easier to find
Since the end goal is a laptop sized screen, I'm thinking a used laptop would be a quicker route to a solution. And dead laptops can often be had cheaply.
I thought that. Thanks!
Or free! Try hitting local repair shops, sometimes they have a pallet of junk and they might have old laptops with good screens that just aren't worth their time. And sometimes you can get the controller boards for like $10-15 on eBay, but they might take 2-6 months shipping from China... hopefully they won't get stuck on a boat
Smart! Thanks 🙂
doc not bad!
My one regret with going to school originally was taking out private student loans
Repayment starts in August and payments are going to be a lotttt of money
What is your favorite classical music?
Mine is Bach concerto for Oboe and Violin BWV 1060
Scheherazade
Almost got to play it with a full group before covid hit
Belioz sinfonie fantastique is a close second
I was gonna play that at all state before covid hit and ruined the plans for the entire festival
In this time of the year here in Brazil, people dress like this (it is very similar to cowboys in the US) and we dance related musics, there are a lot of fireworks, there are some types of fireworks for kids too, people make a fire pit in front of the houses (but not in the capital at all) and people eat a lot of food based mostly on corn, they prepare foods with the fire pit like cheese ,corn, etc... It is very fun. In this photo it is me(engineer student) in the right, my brother(Lawer) in the left and our friend(Pshycologist I think) in the middle. At the time we didn't had Arduino's but we had Windows XP and 97. The fire pit is a real fire pit, made with wood, our family liked the vertical fire pit, it was a lot of vertical woods together and we put fire in the top.
FULL CUSTOM RGB

$5 mouse?
lol
RGB stuff is either $5 or $500
Trying to make worthless stuff look valuable and trying to make semi worthless stuff look valuable :)
lol
🤣
RGB also makes expensive things look cool
?
I'm getting a normal one and sprucing it up
What do you mean what did I do to it? XD
Yeah, me too
Workstation cost all the muns DX
I know....
At least it's fast
Yeah. I am getting a LattePanda thanks to parsko, and it's not too shabby
I want one
Find best mini pc win10 online? DFRobot.com supplies LattePanda which is a single development board with build-in Arduino that could run win 10, check LattePanda reviews here and shop now!
Need muns XD
Yeah. Do a https://versus.com search on the Intel Atom x5 Z8350 and compare it to a 1st gen Core i3 -|| it wins||
Versus is a global data-driven comparison platform, covering over 90 categories. Compare smartphones, cameras, headphones, graphics cards, and much more. With detailed tech specs, data visualizations, and price comparisons, Versus is the best product finder for a wide range of consumer electronics, from smartphones to PC hardware.
Save your keyboard money and get one of those instead
I have a few tablets with that Atom, lol
I want the fastest one XD
Do they run Win10 and have 3 USB ports?
That's the Alpha
They run Windows 10, I forget if they have USB 3
Sell your tablets and get an Alpha
Lmao, they're worthless at this point... they were only $120 on the top end, and that was 4 years ago
If I can find someone who wants them :P they can barely Windows
Oof
yeah
The v1 isn't too bad at Windows 10.
1GB of RAM and a low performance processor does not a great experience make, lol
How about 4 GB RAM/a low performance CPU LOL
I would get a $50 refurbished laptop off eBay and fix it up, if I were you
And get a LP after your next paycheck
Much better XD Windows dislikes less than 2GB of RAM
Gotta go - bye
seeya!
What a coincidence. It is kind of a coincidence I think, I asked if I could be a Sir for being a good engineer but not a british engineer but a brazillian engineer. It is not the Sir title, but..., it is something :).
my computer became...unusable recently. sorry computer, here's a song about it. he's fixed now, but everything was wiped
I disagree - you need at least 8GB (cause in my experience Windows likes to use 4GB. Maybe cause I'm using pro???? idk)
Plus booting off an HDD
For that kind of money, I'd want to try one of these instead: https://shop.udoo.org/udoo-bolt-v3.html
I think if you add the components it doesn't come with (memory + optional m.2 ssd) it comes out to around the same as the preloaded LP alpha
I'm guessing that's "twice as fast" as an old X86 Macbook, not the new ARM based ones.
My Analog Discovery 2 / PPK box didn’t have enough personality but NOW IT HAS STICKERS 😁😝 Measure all the things! 🙌🙌
Who’s a little QT PY?! ☺️☺️ someone’s about to get Circuit Python installed 😁😁 ⚡️ 🐍
I don't think header pins are supposed to go into the Type C port
if they fit…
My plan was to do stacking headers for breadboard breakout - should I be going for a direct solder instead due to the castellated pads? My samd21 qt (usb micro I think) is physically pretty much the same, is there a limitation to usb-c spec I should be watching out for? 😅 always good to figure these things out before busting out the iron haha
Online learning at university is so good. I do not have to walk to the classes or to the office hours... Just this week I made 2 PDFs to a single professor each one with more than 17 questions, and he answers via e-mail. And it is good because I take prints, highlight areas. It is pretty awesome. I made more PDFs this week I am just giving this example.
🤣🤣🤣 ok hold on I just looked at the pic more 😅😅 dang it you caught me! Thought I could get away with just jamming those in there hahahaha * carefully repositions headers away from the port *
Lmao
There it says : No to drugs, no to cigars and no to alchool. Very important 😃 👍
In the blue wall...
Oop
i am partying here as sonic 30th party
Sorry, I don't find the right section for Keyboard thing... since Adafruit is on keyboard stuff, I felt I need to share this discovery:
I entered the rabit hole of DDR controler... and there is a "market" for finger DDR board. Look a this "thnikk 4K" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AttTFpKn0zQ&t=1020
Grab Atlas VPN for $1.39/mo before the deal expires: http://atlasv.pn/KKClue
dance dance revolution controllers come in all different shapes and sizes. some good, some bad, some ugly. softpads, thiccpads, hardpads, hand controllers, and even the dang game boy.
music and software used:
https://pastebin.com/raw/4s1RDxAN
THE GROOVEBOARDS HAVE N...
Why is this a thing. My brother was highly respected as a stepfile maker in the "finger DDR" community, and last I checked, most people use either a standard keyboard/macropad or a fightstick/arcadepad...
It is just "new" to me much lower cost than full DIY keyboard, very accessible project for someone that want to do something in CircuitPython with the new keyboard thing.
Actually, Osu is probably more known for having custom 2-key macropads specifically for its purpose
Ahhhh, yeah that's fair
Most people get into the games before the peripherals tho LOL
So now I discover that there are people making those "sequence" and attaching that to song. Of course that must exist. I don't want to spend hours into that rabbit hole. I need to forget about this right now. 🙂
I think it's pretty interesting how Adafruit is going full-tilt into this 3x4 macropad.
One of the nicest finished designs I've seen in a while.
You could take one of these fully-assembled and still generate a good amount of interest.
Adafruit's Neokey featherwing with a feather 32u4 or smth, you've got a decent Osu! macropad
Random question -- for those familiar with computer mice, anyone recommend one for someone who's comfortable with a "claw" style grip?
Get a trackball!!! You basically hold it in a “claw” like pattern, and by manipulating the amount of spin you put into the ball you can go from edge to edge of the screen with speed, then slow down for fine precision (set the cursor speed really low)
@supple surge I currently use a trackball and trackpad, but looking for more of a mouse for gaming. 🙂
I claw my Logitech G602
Ahhh gotcha! So you already know the ways of the ball 🤣😅😛 kattni was after a gaming mouse too but Mac compatible with customizable leds - hmmm 🤔 where all the good mices at? 😅 🐭 sounds like a question for my Starcraft friends 😄
G602 has several buttons that can be customized :D no RGB tho...
Yeah, I'm probably not their target market -- three button wireless mouse with vertical scroll. Bonus points for selector for free/ratcheting scroll.
Extra buttons? LEDs? Weights? That's nice but not needed at all.
I got the MX Master 2, and well....I'm unhappy with it. I can't grip it the way I do with my hockey-puck Microsoft Wireless 3500.
And the nice part, those mice are under $20 and have been around for the better part of a decade.
G602 is also "heavy", apparently, but I'm a giant and anything under 5lbs is basically nothing as far as I'm concerned
Seems that the G602 is discontinued 😦
I want to learn about STM32 bruh
Prince William playing on a drone 😂
Maybe he programs and knows how to build one 😂 cool. 🥳 👍

Guys, a bit of a question for fellow scholars
can you copy and paste from your own unpublished work to make a proceeding?
or a short journal?
Yes, you can - why not?
In fact it is not uncommon for people to copy and paste from their own published work too, I had seen papers consisting for 90 percent of rehashing of previous results, and only 10 percent new.
(I do not consider this a good practice, though)
Yeah, if it's YOUR work, and you don't have some agreement not to publish it with someone for some reason, you can do what you please
But yeah, probs not best practice to rehash all over
Thanks. I've never heard of that before. I'll look in to it.
😀
Windows 11 launched! 🥳
It will be a free update!
It is funny here in Brazil, when someone starts talking about football everyone else participates hahaha.
I think it's ugly DX
The guys from that truck started talking about football, them my father talked with them too, them some workers behind us participated the conversation too.
Lol
It looks like Windows 10. I hope it will fix the bugs.
Except rounded and more transparent and more widgets and shading
And it looks like the Start menu is a bunch of junk instead of being able to make it slim and clean like I like...
Thankfully you can turn off the stupid centering in settings for the taskbar
I joined the conversation too. To talk about bad things about our own teams... 😂
I just want simple and utilitarian, no shading and curves and transparency
I dono, I basically fear the implications of Windows 11 and things that they are going to do to make my device less my device.

there is no operation system what speak to me after windows 10
I am so happy with this :) For a moment I tought I had to buy a new computer with Windows 11 to get it. Windows 10 is great (when there is no bugs) and I am not sad with the fact that it looks very similar to Windows 10.
Livetiles is mind is operational
I don't even really feel like Win 10 really spoke to me that much, it was an obligated upgrade.
It looks great :), it looks modern, I like the colors... I just hope it will take no more than 4gb of RAM.
I doubt it'll be happy on 4GB... 10 likes 8GB+, but works on as little as 1GB
But even 8GB can be pretty bad for 10...
4GB is the minimum just for windows
If you want anything else you need another 4GB
I have tablets with 1GB of RAM XD but not good
I say 12GB is like... the least you'd want to be nice and comfy, anything with 8GB just seems to be full all the time
I don't like when the principal protagonist is a bad person. I like for example if it is Thor the main protagonist, or even a bad guy turning into a good guy, but never movies creating a good image in a bad guy. I hate movies like this, his series got into Disney + and I didn't even watch it.
Loki isn’t a bad guy
He’s an anti hero
There’s a very big difference between antagonists and anti heroes.
An antihero (sometimes spelled as anti-hero) or antiheroine is a main character in a story who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes such as idealism, courage, and morality. Although antiheroes may sometimes perform actions that are morally correct, it is not always for the right reasons, often acting primarily out of self-interest ...
The Mandaloriam per example, he kinda became good.
Mandalorian is also an antihero
Not inherently good, but not bad either
They usually act out of self interest
I don't like half :( half is worst than bad.
And understanding antiheroes will help you appreciate their role in these comics and movies
I like Loki
They are vital for the character development of those around them
And for the progression of plot
Also, Win11 👏👏
Win 11, killing more devices than Apple. I’ll give them props for one upping Apple
Lol
not entirely the fault of MS
intel has had that feature since like 4th? gen, but manufacturers can disable it in the BIOS
the Deadpool 3 was supposed to have wolverine and deadpool on roadtrip before marvel bought Fox
I am hoping for better things from Redmond LOL
It would be a matter then if PTT is usable on your motherboard then
this would pressure the big OEMs to release a BIOS update that enables it
and not disable it in the future
it's amusing how much people case about what the # is called
I end up calling it a cross hatch just to confuse everyone
The Mandalorian risked his life for a kid, this is morality and he also faced whole arms for a kid it is courage and he also lost his bad idealism from the Mandalorian order for the kid. Maybe in the past he was an anti-hero. I don't want the Mandalorian to be an anti-hero what a bad name... And the Mandalorian stopped being a criminal because of the kid.
He didn’t stop because of the kid
In the end?
He still clearly did things indicative of an antihero
He gave the kid to Luke Skywaker.
And while he was with the kid he stopped his job.
Nah, he still worked as a mercenary the whole time.
Actually I do not know exactly if he was a criminal? I think his money wasn't legal.
He still did what he was used to do
He snuggled someone just to get somewhere
Smuggled*
The only person he searched who was in the list was that woman in the desert and it wasn't for money.
Look, regardless of how you feel the Mandalorian was and will be an antihero
It’s the nature of Mandalorian
He showed his face. This is completely not Mandalorian.
He was not a Mandalorian remember? He found the clothes.
The one who makes weapons?
No.. the ones who wanted the dark saber
the boba fet was mando for mandalorians so clone troopers are all mandalorians so the battle on mandos planet was epic mandalorians battle
No no no. It wasn't mandalorians
Just the clothes look like each other.
They were not Mandalorians.
The problem with wanting things to be black or white in terms of good or bad is that just isn’t how the world works
No, you are all mixing things.
That group of three people?
Yes, they were Mandalorian too
if the groupd of mandalorians say boba as mandalorian too so as boba is actually a clone what made for jango so
REAL Mandalorians. The Mandalorians who do the "don't show your face" thing were members of Deathwatch, a Mandalorian extremist group. Bo Katan, the leader of that smaller group, was leader of Mandalore, and her sister was leader before Deathwatch showed up
Also Windows 11 may kill many things
Unclear if these lists are exhaustive... But if they are, many machines that are only 4-5 years old are already destined to be without Windows
There was Celeron and Pentium in there... Is this really precise?
I mean, it's Microsoft, so I would expect so... but when I say "unclear if these lists are exhaustive", I mean that there may be more that are compatible than are listed
I really do hope that's not ALL compatible processors... I mean, there are a lot of chips that are only 4 years old that aren't on that list
The tool they have to check also just says if it's compatible, or if it's not, it just gives this if there's an incompatibility, instead of telling you WHY it isn't compatible
This is very bad.
Yeah... Well, at least 10 isn't dying any time soon
Yep, my computer is from 2018...
I mean, I'm pretty sure it's the lack of TPM. Ryzen 5000 doesn't have a built in TPM, and I don't have a module installed on my board
Now, I have a laptop that has a TPM... but it gives the exact same message, but meets the other requirements, so I don't know WHY it failed
No Atom x5 Z8350! 😦
No 1st gen Ryzen
I agree... That's alright, though....
When I was a kid I remember watching a lot of commercial that was not directed to me because I was a kid it made me feel a bit sad, even the controller of my ps2 was to big for my hands, it made me feel out of something great... When these companies do this they do the same to people that can't afford a new computer or don't know how to change a microprocessor (or don't know what a microprocessor is).
This is a data security thing
It has nothing to do with a desire to make people buy new hardware
They’re fixing one of the biggest data security issues in windows that has been around since the start
Someone in another server told me they don't believe in TPM
Where you can just put the drive with windows installed and you can just access every file
That’s just ignorant
Shows you how much they know
One of the reasons is because 2.0 saves auth failures indefinitely
You're in the future, on my birthday :O
Me and my father made this project, it connects to the internet and it is 3D printed. The back is a bit weird, I don't know why but my father choosed to 3D print a model that was not so good in the back but we leave like this any way. The only part we took a 3D Model was the back because we are awesome and we made the blue part. Look.
noice
Happy birthday.
Thanks :D
There it says "To a super son" that is me 😃 🥳 .
It looks like Tomorrowland's pin, but I am sure it is better.
Does anyone have any experience with Stack Overflow?
I am having a good experience so far
Great place to get roasted
Bring marshmallows
You could make a simple mistake and someone will find your post and dump a load of dirt all over you for being human
10/10 highly recommend
lmao
a better question to ask would be does anyone not have experience with stack overflow
I only ever read Stack Overflow
Never posted there
of course
This
Does anyone know if you can get ICs in white ceramic with gold anymore? Or only old parts?
It is hard to get points on StackOverFlow.
One of the goals of my life is to get a lot of points on this website.
People there are so rigorous with the posts....
You can't ask a question that is not rigorously propper otherwise they freeze your post.
My own experience.
not anymore
Phooey
ever since DIP went out of style for CPUs anymore
and the white ceramic chips are collectors items now
so they are rare and expensive
Adafruit should make new stock ceramic chips for beautiful projects

My favorite music. These girls play so well. I think they play better than the other adults I've seen on YouTube playing the same music. And I think they play this music better than our local orchestra, I always go to their events and I've never seen the local orchestra playing this music, but I think these girls play this music better than them.
I love how the oboe meets the violin ✅
Ehhhhhh.... dropping... I dunno if I'd call it crashing quite yet
LOL
I guess if you bought in when we were at $12 it's still pretty shiny. Recent acquisitions are going to sting for a while.
I'd call it a crash if it was down like 40%+ in a day, anything under 10% can just go up and down in a day pretty easy
It dropped enough that I'm holding until the next jump
Actually my favorite music is the 1 Allegro of this song, but not the Adagio and 3 Allegro. Bach looses his quality in them completelly.
I think 2 years ago (or 3 years ago I don't know) I watched a TED talk of him talking something about this the EarthShots (or something like this), that we should have something like a goal to make the earth's environment clean. Hum... I am not being precise because I watch it so long ago. Good to see that he's doing something about this now...
I wish I could create a green transistor, green ci's or 100% green computers, that would be so great... Like a transistor made from a seed... Green super computers... We need so much to take care of earth's environment, there is the greenhouse effect, termical inversion, heat islands, and a bunch of other effects caused by global warming, this is pretty bad. The ph of the river that covers Aracaju (my city) is way lower(more acid) than 10 years ago according to studies that a friend made in his research in environmental engineering...

Moar nuclear, less coal
They're all good. But nuclear is compact, stable, safe, and when the fuel is handled properly and used in different types of reactors to take maximum advantage, clean
But we need to get rid of coal and oil
then theres 1000 years of storage
what you said is true. im concerned about after, not the process
There are newer reactor types that can continue to draw power from the waste material of fission reactors, so we're not just filling a hole with radioactive materials. But at least if it is stored, it's not in the atmosphere like all the byproducts of burning things
nuclear waste can be largely recycled. US of A just chooses not to. Other countries do.
its a very effective stopgap while we perfect fusion, which is about 15 years off
Well... Who knows how far off fusion is, people have been saying "10-20 years off" for decades. But fission is cleaner than fossil fuels!
Wind and solar are only clean if you can hide the wind farms and solar farms away in a desert somewhere. Having these massive wind turbines next to your house is no fun.
Clean as in green, not causing environmental damage
Aesthetics clean is different XD but function over form, yo
Special brazillian's june festivals cheeto's flavor: Corn and Butter. It has a good flavor. I ate another Cheetos with a brazillian flavor for june's festivals: Cocada, it is a brazillian desert. Sweet Cheetos.
Nuclear waste can be used in several more layers of reactors before it is truly waste that needs to be disposed of fully
Sadly we don’t invest in those extra layers so we shove all the waste in a mountain to be forgotten about
I think the best clean energy is Solar's Energy, Nuclear Energy is great but it is dangerous!
The issue with solar is how much space is takes up
It will be more efficient in the future.
It's not dangerous unless you're using an ancient reactor design and operate it improperly. That stigma is unwarranted -- modern reactors are safe and efficient
I'd say the storage issue is the bigger problem with solar. You need to figure out how to power things at night, too.
It’s a good option to like fill up excess space but it can’t come close to the density of nuclear
Nuclear energy is like eating too much sugar food, it has a lot of energy but it is bad.
Solar energy is like eating vegetables.
It's not bad, it's not dangerous
Again, unless you do it wrong, but modern reactors are safe
The few major nuclear disasters have been from negligence of safety procedures
Chernobyl was caused when they disabled safety features ON PURPOSE
Idiots
And most didn't result in nearly as much harm as sometimes is portrayed. And overall deaths are far far FAR lower than deaths from complications of fossil fuels
Depends on how you want to define fossil fuels lol
Nuclear reactors are often portrayed as ticking time bombs that could explode at any moment... And that's just not accurate
We have been using some form of fossil fuels for thousands of years
Solar is a good stopgap if we use it to get away from coal immediately
But it’s not sustainable with our level of growth as a society
Anything we got out of the ground that used to be biomatter -- coal, oil, anything that puts out greenhouse gases
Yeah, photovoltaic cells can't provide enough power to replace coal outright by itself
Yes, fossil fuels are stored solar energy, which is ultimately nuclear energy (which in turn is ultimately solar). However fossil fuels are also sequestered carbon and burning them re-releases that carbon into the atmosphere, which causes a whole host of problems.
This.
Remember that we stopped using renewable energy because it wasn’t dense enough for our uses
If we try going 100% solar there’s either going to be most of our inhabitable land covered in solar cells or we go back to dirty power
If we go to full photovoltaic, yeah
A dyson sphere would be cool tho
There's also solar thermal power, which is higher density, but has other implications
How about the unhabitable land? There's also wind, tidal, and geothermal energy available. There's a whale of a lot of energy available, even at the paltry efficiency we can currently manage. Some conservation would also go a long way (goodbye cryptocurrency and data centers running on wasteful outdated technology)
That would be a more accurate statement, yes
A surprising percentage of proof of work crypto is being done in Iceland, using geothermal power and ambient cooling, amusingly enough.
Multiple types good. Although we need to be careful -- putting too much of one type of power collection might impact the local environment. But it's a big planet
And then there’s 30% of the Bitcoin network, in china and running off the same coal mine
Thankfully China banned a lot of proof of work Crypto, so there's gonna be a drop in power consumption there
It is possible to do a good thing for bad reasons
Well... Reasons aside, it's banned, so good for the environment
The non-mining GPUs will get used
The ASICs are the problem
But the mining cards... Aside from people like me, yeah, they're ewaste
They have exactly 1 use
Hopefully it reduces the price of gpus
There's already drops in prices
The ASICs are just silicon, epoxy, and some metals: not too terrible as ewaste goes.
But I don’t think the drop will be significant since Chia uses them for plotting
Yes it does, for plotting
They may be recyclable, but a lot just goes into a landfill... Sadly even things I put in the recycling don't always get recycled -- my city often has the trash people putting recycling in the trash trucks with the trash (altho that's something that started with the pandemic)
Chia only uses disk space, it doesn't use a GPU like Etherium
Where did you get that?
It's true that they generally end up in landfill, but chips are not very large, nor do they leach much in the way of toxic chemicals. It's disappointing, but a small enough fraction of the problem that there are other, better targets.
Besides, even if that's accurate, that doesn't require the other dozen GPUs in an Etherium rig
Wet need better recycling initiatives. But more importantly, REDUCTION initiatives
And reuse
There's a reason it's "reduce, reuse, recycle" in that order!
Ah I see they didn’t clone that part of burst
Burst? Wasn't that like 4 years ago? I don't know if Chia is related at all
It is lol
Lol
I'm a big fan of re-use. I'm using someone's old cast-off gaming rig to run FreeNAS for my storage server.
I think recycled objects could be more cheaper.
I shuffle my workstations to be storage servers and stuff as they become too old for the original use. My stupid 7900X/X299 combo will be turned into a server soon, assuming I can figure out the memory issues
I mean, they should be cheaper than non-recycled objects.
Alas, many companies destroy things instead of re-use/refurbish/recycle because they make more money selling new stuff.
God I hate Intel
Nobody hates Intel lol.
I do
They've singlehandedly set the computing industry back 20 years or so with their wasteful, long-obsolete X86 ISA.
Because I have problems with their hardware, and my experiences with their customer service have been garbage. They treat me like trash, why should I have any love for them?
I never used Intel consumer experience. I never needed to use.
Also just bad corporate policy overall
Well, if you do, good luck. They don't honor their warranties if they can make an excuse not to
Just like any other company.
There is this on "The incredibles" the Pixar movie.
Thankfully they don't make motherboards outright anymore, but I've had more chipset issues and driver issues with then than you can shake a stick at
Alas, I was unable to repair my TV for a fourth time after the lightning storm and had to reluctantly replace it.
Uhh... No. Not every company is like that. AMD I've only need to contact a couple times, and they fulfilled the warranty fine. EVGA goes above and beyond, and will sometimes give you a BETTER product as a replacement (one time I got a 1070 Ti to replace a 1070 that had failed).
On the upside, I was able to leapfrog two generations of display technology in the process.
This never happens here, lightining storms breaking electrical objects.
Intel resorts to lies and technicalities to get out of warranty coverage -- my brother sent in a failed motherboard, and they sent it back with a letter saying it couldn't be covered "due to physical damage; bent pins", but there was no damage, and they refused to do anything.
Wow, sounds like the "extended auto warranty" companies
And a tyre company that rhymes with "Irestone"
Wow, ti good upgrade.
Microsoft replaced an old Xbox One for me.
It was horrible, and part of why I hate them. I avoid their products as much as possible. Thankfully now AMD makes good parts, so I don't have to make a choice of staying on an old, slow device, or buying Intel and risking anger and pain
Good parts again, I should say
eyes PowerPC mobo
Yes.
Lol
I have a PowerPC Mac Pro I don't know what to do with
If it runs, it might be a nice BSD/Linux box.
Fully functional... But it's basically a space heater that can't handle FireFox
What is the year of this Mac Pro?
I see. I never had an Apple product. Apple product's are my brother's favorites.
2003-2006
All my computers and smartphones were Windows, Android and Linux.
A few years ago I wanted a FireFoxOS for smartphone, have you ever heard about it?
I also wanted a Chromebook.
FireFoxOS went nowhere, sadly
BeOS went nowhere too, also sadly.
I hate Chromebooks and I think ChromeOS should be erased from time
It’s pretty trash
It is not.
What makes you think I love china?
Chromebook is great.
And they have a program to give these computers to poor kids.
Like in Thailand
I think
The devices are alright
And they use it to code inside Google.
Chrome OS is super locked down
I've used ChromeOS and can confirm it's garbage. It's confusing, you can't do a whole lot on it, it's just... Bad. I mean, the hardware isn't usually too bad, but it would be so much better with just Linux
I’d hate to have my device locked to a single browser that constantly has 0 days coming out
I’m getting closer and closer to ripping chrome out of all devices I manage at work
I don't like Chrome either. I love Gmail, however, and Android
So it's not like I'm an anti-Google person
But that's gone now, sadly...
Oh wait cheap
My brain skipped "cheap" and filled in "free"
I liked free for Pixel, sad that's gone
Oh well
They got their training data for their AI models
Gdrive is so fast and expansive for the price it’s basically free
It went from $12/month to $20/month sadly
Not code
They use it inside the company to code!
No they don’t
The new employees receive a chromebook to code.
When they arrive in the company.
And they use it.
And when they go out.
They have to give the chromebook back
I can't imagine doing ANY serious work on a Chromebook
The engineers use whatever they want to be most productive
Mechanical keyboards, vim, emacs, whatever they want
Forcing employees to use chromebooks would be a cruel form of punishment
I think this is a bit fake, you do not need an i7 to work as an engineer.
I am a student.
So it is not very precise what I am saying.
Imagine compiling the linux kernel on a chromebook
They don’t have to have the best of the best
They use what gives them the best experience in their specific position
Chromebooks don't have much power, you can't use them for heavy applications
So you think, engineers in Brazil are trashy, no we are not. We make great things too.
what
I've known engineers in Brazil... They didn't use Chromebooks
Chromebook doesn't support many engineering software I think.
But you can use Multsim Live for example.
Simple things.
Yeah, simple things
chromeos does not support the vast majority of developer toolchains
it requires hacking to get even just a terminal up
that makes it useless to them for even just simple git operations
ChromeOS isn't really good for more than basic things like Google searches, writing in Google docs, and maybe looking at your photos... And the hardware it's on can't do anything serious in terms of processing
they might give them to like HR or something
Yeah
but developers? no chance
Nope
they have so much money that it makes no sense to skimp out on hardware
And there's not a developer mode that lets it do whatever you want in ChromeOS
.
And google employees use it.
It is just my opnion.
I mean... They can be good for students in some contexts? And whether Google employees use it or not is a matter of fact, not opinion. But some Google employees using them is different than all employees using them for everything at Google. The only thing I can imagine a developer using one for is to give a presentation in a meeting in slideshow form instead of lugging a workstation laptop
Google’s preferred OS for its employees is OS X, and not Windows, Linux or even its own Chrome OS.
lol
I mean, that's old, but... Ha
macs are a pain to manage
likely not
Yeah
probably mostly windows now
Yeah, I'd imagine Windows or Linux
Life is a pain without some sort of domain setup
It wouldn't surprise me if there's an internal Linux distro specifically for Google
Help employees make the switch to ChromebooksFor administrators who manage Chrome OS devices for a business.
A well-crafted change management strategy helps you with the process, tools, and tac
More reliable I think.
that's an ad for businesses
I set up a lab of like 50 chrome boxes or whatever they'll called and that was painful
they're very obviously consumer products
just like macs
I mean like... Real distro, not a restricted mess
Yeah, Chromebook management is NOT that easy. That's why a lot of schools don't use them if they can avoid it, many use iPads or cheap Windows laptops
RIP
my school chromebooks were baddd
ipads were bad but manageable
they tried restricting the internet access by making you log in every 30 minutes
even at home
everyone protested it and they got rid of it
we lined up outside the tech support office and the line was like 500 students long by the end of the day
Oof
Windoooowwwwssss
It is possible that I was wrong about Google employees receiving a chromebook.
Because I read it in more than 7 years ago.
I still think chromebook is great.
cheap
I'll never buy one
Yeah, it is
Yeah, I agree
Does anyone know if UPS delivers on Saturdays? I have an order coming in, and it's literally 10 miles from me, but it says "Expected delivery Monday".
Yup, they do
I think they even deliver Sundays? I know I've gotten UPS packages on Saturday
OK. Thanks
np
👍
A school's director gave me this book, it is from the creator of Khan Academy. I like the school director so much, he is so young, I think he must be 42.... or so. He himself makes arduino projects with selected students (everyone that demonstrates interest) in his school.
So many teachers offered free books to me 😂
I don't think they do unless you are in a big city-

Scroll to the bottom.....
UPS Ground on Saturday for Consumers
coughs in big city
Well... Monday it is for me (so far) - unless the Unbelievably Positively Slow company pulls another 11 o'clock PM delivery 😉
Lol
😉
I'm outside of a big city and they deliver on weekends
Hmm. IDK. I guess it's only 5 here....
probably depends on how many deliveries the area gets
too many packages and they'll start piling up
Yeah
And probably also how far from a big city you are
Like... if you live in Nowhere, Nebraska... probs not
I don't. 🙂
omaha nebraska is pretty big
It is
Sometimes I think about moving to the middle of nowhere so I can do crazy experiments without having to worry about neighbors or police freaking out over small explosions
that's why you trick out a basement to be your crazy lab
fume extractors, sound proofing
take trips to Nevada or Texas for the big stuff
Basement too small, I can't build a particle accelerator in there
tony stark did
Yes but his basement was bigger than my entire house
Also the accelerator went outside
I'd also like to live somewhere like that
but then there's terrible internet and parts availability
I almost moved to Omaha a few years ago. It seems like my sort of place.
Can't go wrong with steaks everywhere
Don't like to think about Earth being flat?
Yes lol
XD
I like mountains that make waking up easier
How? XD
Eh, I'm up way before sunrise anyway, lol
Same lol
This is current solar cycle and dawn/dusk periods
We have 5 hrs of true darkness this time of the year
Current length of the day light is 15:02:00
I don’t know the seconds part
Lol
LOL
Oficial driving license theory test simulator. I got 29/30.
:) It is the 15th(possibily more) time I am approved, and I made 15 exams (or more, I was approved in all of them).
OOH, great 😂
Fiat or Renault? Which one is better?
I preffer Renault, but my father preffers Fiat.
Renault
Not familiar with Renault... Haven't driven a Fiat, or seen many. I like Honda
My first car was a Chrysler that was already old XD
Honda go brrrrrr
LOL
My mom has a Ford and it makes me sad
Standard automatic transmissions are the devil
I'm not a fan of slushboxes either.
Being able to feel the car shift... yuck
I prefer my manual transmission vehicles but i will say in town automatic in traffic is much easier
I've never driven manual XD but CVT is the smoothest and most efficient way to go
Manual isnt smooth unless your really proficient with your shifting but power transfer is unmatched
I thought most CVTs were fairly lossy
Maybe early ones, but not modern ones -- the gear ratios are "perfect" on modern ones, so you have minimal power loss. Fuel efficiency of a CVT vs. other transmissions is higher [maybe not insanely higher, but it adds up, y'know?]
While the gear ratios can (usually) be (near) optimum, there are larger frictional losses than traditional geared transmissions.
Man I remember wrapping my old jetta to redline and then dropping it from second to fifth once up to speed on the highway
There are a few different implementations, there's hydrostatic, belt drive, cone drive, etc.
I abused that car so badly but that thing took a beating over and over till i blew a hose and warped the block
Had to be one of them tiny burried behind the block hoses
That's unfortunate. My VW didn't have any of those hoses.
Not sure what mine has... but I know it's nice and efficient
What year was yours @late fulcrum
'71
Ahh i had a 91
I don't think my car can actually redline when driving XD
Wolfsberg edition
I think the Hondas and Subarus use the cone version, and the Datsuns use the belt drive.
Probably not due to not having control over when you shift
I believe you're right about Honda using cone at the very least
Yeah, my Honda... doesn't go near the red line unless you're approaching the top [allowed?] speed
Even if you floor it, it doesn't jump the RPMs high
The only CVTs I have are the swash plate ones which have the advantage of utter simplicity but are atrociously inefficient
My Honda is very efficient :D
It's one of the cheapest cars in market! it's 7500 dollars here a new one.
not 75 000. 7 500
Is... Is there an engine in it?
Not as cheap as a Kandy K27 but close
Do you drive it like Fred Flinstone's car?
it is one of the few we can afford.
Any car is better than no car
The way things are going, my next car will likely be electric...
I never saw this one.
Looks like a Fiat
The Kandy is a particularly inexpensive miniature electric car
I dunno if I'd fit in that XD
and it's a small car, I like small cars. The parents of my mother's husbang have a big and expensive SUV. I hate that car
I do not like to even get in.
WOOOOOOOOW
It feels unconfortable.
Bigger cars tend to be safer tho
But, uhh... not a fan of boats
My Chrysler was a boat XD
My old car... hefty boi, not very fast. Was nice on the highway tho
Vs. my current car which I love
Nyoom nyoom light boi
I kinda wish I had an Si, but... that's asking to get pulled over
I almost got a Focus, lol
Like the Civic better
Next car choice 2034 if all goes to plan... no idea what the market will be like then
We think 7 500 dollars for a car is very expensive.
But we need it because my father is getting older
That's very cheap around here... cheap used car price
And we don't want to depend upon Uber or Taxis...
and he wants me driving to the University
I think because he finds it cool or something like this.
...
Driving life easy life
It's easier to get where you need to be when you need to be -- no worrying about bus schedules or anything, you can fill the trunk with stuff if you need to instead of trying to carry it... everything is easier with a car
I would like to get a car from 2010 or something like this.
but my father wants a new one for me.
he thinks old cars breaks too much
Pros and cons both ways... New costs a lot more, but there can be problems with used cars
Whether a used car is a good idea depends on the make/model and how well it was cared for -- like, there are Hondas from the 80s that are well cared for, over a million miles, and show no signs of stopping. But if the car is treated like junk and never cared for... not gonna last
And some cars just can't last no matter how well you care for it because it's a bad car
I have a fondness for fleet duty cars, they're cost effective, long lasting, easy to work on, parts are cheap and common, and lots of people are familiar with them.
Yeah, typical fleet cars can have long used lives
My car is fairly common in fleets :D
Especially since there's a CnG version
I used to want a Checker Marathon, but at this point, they're all knackered, unfortunately
F
this F is so fashioned hahaha
Ohh, that's a cool one
people in my WhatsApp group of the university
are using this F
hahahaha...
lol the world is so connected
I would not be brave to drive it here. It has a pretty uncommon appearance for a car.
c l a s s i c
... but if I think. I wouldn't really care to what people say...
I want a DeLorean
Still waiting on new production...
Oh, looks like they might consider switching to EV for the new ones... they're all over the place XD
Car
The car I've dreamt of owning for decades...
I would love to have a '69 WV Micro Bus for a roadtrip with a bunch of friends
by the way Ubers are cheap here in Brazil, I am not rich.
I am saying this because I simulated a ride from Stanford University to Google Headquarters
and it was more than 30 dollars I think. And it was close!
here a very long ride is 3.33 dollars.
you can simulate to check.
Aracaju-SE Brazil.
I think the whole car is made of gold.
including the interior.
I have to go too!
Star Trek time!
Me too
Adios 😋
This is travelling to another city.
Wow
I saw a post that asked what two things would you add to a plate of rice. I was saddened when I found no comments that said sofrito
i accidentally told someone i was 2 and that was embarrassing
Lol
I just saw now, I think the two distances are the same look at "Chegada ao destino: 23:56" this is the time it will arrive in the destiny. Cool, the distance between Stanford and Google is about the same as the distance between my father's house and my mother's house.
Brazillian's Uber Confort you can choose in the app if the driver talks to you or not. 😂 👍 I asked for UberX and it did not have this option.
"am i done yet"
lol
I just realized, I haven't been seeding since the workstation I did torrents on died DX
Sorta died... messy
D: how?
Ever-increasing memory errors. Haven't had a chance to isolate if the issue is the memory, the motherboard, or the memory controller'
RIP
This is why I built a new workstation
Also I was just getting tired of Intel problems
I had a lot of issues with drivers, plus Windows always seems to want to load like 2 threads on 2 cores with most stuff, so the processor's overall usage would be like 20%, but 2 cores would be at 100% and the system would chug
All of my current laptops are Intel based... but most of them also aren't high performance workstations, so they don't get pushed to the limit much if ever anyway
one time i ran two vms and a google meet and pycharm at the same time
my computer didn't like it and i ran out of memory XD
also unity doesn't help
stop flexing 😂 i only have 12
My 2-in-1 has 12 :P
and they are all ddr3 or something like that
oof
All of my current systems are DDR4 at this point
I think I only have 1 DDR3 machine... most hardware in my house is DDR2 or earlier
Vintage
Actually I have aa couple machines like that
Lenovo prebuilts that I'm refurbing to be basic gaming PCs
3770 and like a 1650 or RX 580 and BAM, entry level gaming
*me whimpering cause i have to use integrated gpu*
Pssst, hey kid... wanna buy a GPU?
I seriously have some for sale, lol
Wanna buy a 1070 Ti? :O
do you accept crypto XD
~~and do you accept spreading the payments over like 5 gazillion years plus no down payment 😂 ~~
Lol, can't do crypto, haven't figured a good way to get it to USD without costing a lot... And I can do payment plans, but not 5 gazillion years and no down payment XD
Payment plans are awesome, and it's lovely to be able to work that way with people. That's how I was able to afford the MacBook Pro I'm typing on :D
I rolled a Nat 20 for the minimum montly payment for this thing... $20 a month :D
Changing MacOS icons... BOOTCAMP is being stubborn DX
Hmmm... the price isn't bad for this, but an open source version to play with more would be cool https://hackaday.com/2021/06/26/raspberry-pi-pico-oscilloscope/
Sharpening a pencil in a pencil sharpener where you can see the tip, it kinda looks like the pencil is growing a tip instead of being shaved down...
These are not the exact andress of my father and my mother by the way. I just did it to get a feeling of the distance.
Has someone here ever participate Physics Olympads or any other Science Olympiad?
I didn't know it existed, sounds amazing
It is!
When I participated only me at 10th grade and another student at 12h grade of my school passed the tests for the National Physics Olympiad in the whole school. It is very competitive and the problems are hard. It needs special preparation.
Like this book: Irodov. It is a Russian physics book, highly recommended for the International Physics Olympiads. I had an english version but I gave it to a teacher.
There is a Liberty Statue here in my city: Aracaju-SE Brazil. I think it is smaller than the original.
From the trunk of my car in the dark part of the parking lot behind that burned out Taco Bell
All out
Seriously tho, you can DM me, lol
Anyone here have any newegg connections? Dm me please
Does anyone here knows about a movie or a TV series about electronics/electrical engineering, creation of projects related? It can be a fiction. On Amazon Prime, Netflix or Disney +. Thank You. It can be a good documentary. Something like Doctor House, but not medicine. Engineering. I am not joking, I never do jokes.
You made me choke on my sandwich a little
I just giggled and I'm sorry
But not sorry that it was funny, just sorry you choked, I hope you're alright XD
There's one on Disney+, but the name of it escapes my memory...
Try Halt and Catch Fire on Netflix. Starts in the early 80s at the dawn of the IBM PC revolution. It's fiction. Some engineering, but it is a drama.
It's one of the best TV shows I've seen, it was fantastic, fwiw.
Could you imagine having to replace an led in the middle lol
would be annoying but i guess its held in place, so can just do spot desolders
Very bad, so you'll have to open it?
What do you mean by way off?
In that post I was actually looking at an NTP synchronized clock, when the clock hit 11:36 was when I hit return. So, my measurement says accuracy of 1 minute or better based relative to a microsecond accurate clock.
Yea, had to disconnect all the layers and replace the LEDs. (3 of them were broken)
Now I've fixed them but I'm gonna reassemble the layers tommorow as that incident did not help my blood pressure
I remember the first time I learnt it (10th grade, I was reading the subject for 11th grade) , I learned the hard way , equation by equation, case by case, I didn't skip the pages in the book to see PV= nRT equation and them I saw this equation and made everything easier.
I mean it says you posted that at 8:36 AM CST.
Just dropped my bike for the first time
Im a little sad, but I couldn't find any damage so yay!
All i had to adjust afterwards was the handlebars and mirror. They kinda got pushed into weird positions
But very easy fix
White color it is very pretty
It is the one in the left. Renault is a very popular brand here in Brazil. It is like fruits, they are cheap but they are great. But this fruit is not cheap to me.
If you run a humidifier and a dehumidifier (or AC) in the same room such that the temperature and humidity both stay the same as they were, where does most of the energy dissipate to?
heat
AC displaces heat from one area from another, usually from inside to outside

Oh no. It’s a new version of a well-established product that trades efficiency for convenience. But this time, it’s more than just being cool. It’s about cooling.
Seriously, either we need to get more awareness of how dumb single-hose portable A/C units are, or we need to just use window u...
a relevant video
does phase change of the coolant account for only a small amount of the energy, compared to how much is blown outside as heat? or am I misunderstanding the way the coolant is used
The phase change occurs as a result of the change in temperature of the coolant
Phase changes themselves don’t produce extra energy
that is not my understanding
Phase changes are the result of a change of energy in a system
yes, my understanding is that as heat is added to a material, the temperature levels out for a bit as the phase changes, and the energy truly goes into the phase change
Phase changes do, in fact require or expend some extra energy. It's why the evaporation of water provides additional cooling to a surface beneath it. It's why our bodies produce sweat, for instance.
I think the debate here is not the effect of a phase change, but rather the definition of energy generation?
I'm just wondering how the energy absorbed by phase change factors into the dehumidifier scenario above. The answer might be simply "it's insignificant compared to the heat transfer from blowing hot air outside"
It seems to me that all the cooling has to come from the phase change, since no other component absorbs heat. Then the heat dissipated by the other components doing work is blown outside
I guess that answers my original question (albeit not sure if it's correct): heat enters the compressor of the dehumidifier and goes toward condensing the coolant; heat dissipates out from the other components; the excess heat is directed toward hot air that is blown outside
Maybe another way to consider it too is that for a refrigeration cycle to work, you don't actually need to have phase changes
The way I learned it is that phase changes are just a more convenient way to get the most out of your refrigeration cycle. If you had a source of cool water, like from a well or river, you could technically refrigerate a building with that, no phase change required. What the phase change does is allow you to absorb a lot of energy with a given amount of working fluid.
The phase change, practically speaking, lets you use much smaller evaporators and condensers
Either way, your working fluid (whether it's refrigerant or maybe just chilled water) is what absorbs energy and moves it to where you want it, in this case it would move energy outside of a room to cool it
Infinite resistance, infinitesimal distance
