@polar bloom Not sure how to answer that one. ;)
When you're down to 24 V traditionally you aren't using a lot of Watts.
So you wouldn't run a heavy electrical motor from 24V usually.
(golf carts are 48V iirc)
What voltage would a microwave run at internally?
Yeah you use higher volts for higher wattages typically
Simple life hack for not melting your cables π
The weird exception is people's insistence on using a lot of amperes at 5 VDC .. for LED strip lighting. ;)
I've heard car audio buffs say you use really truly thick wires to feed those high-power amps they like so much.
I think microwaves bump into thousands of volts?
TWT's have pretty high voltages. I want to say 'plate' voltages there, but I don't remember.
Oh but microwave ovens use the other thing.
magnetron
Zap
That's literally what they're called here.
Yup
Car audio buffs are a special breed lol
The current of audio stuff isnβt super high, itβs high voltage AC to the speakers
I hadn't thought about car audio as HV AC but yeah that makes sense.
72 V springs to mind for no reason whatsoever. ;)
Well itβs not a consistent voltage usually
But yeah the car audio kids usually blast music so loud that the current does get high
Which is pointless since youβre gonna blow your eardrums at the point where you would need to reasonably worry about cable gauge
Most of them. Some are 36 volts

Can someone add me to the Deep Diver role? @stuck moth
What even is deep diver for?
it's for folks who want to be notified about my deep dive streams
ahh gotcha
I'm finally home so I can start on my wii project
Biiiig shiny
fancy
Computers keep me warm all year round
U mining on that bad boy?
I spent every cent I had on pre built gaming PCs and GPUs since February and now I have 11 GPUs mining and its getting warm outside so its becoming a problem
I got paid today!
Maybe part time, one of my cards does that currently, but I don't let my machines rest much XD
Hehe profits way down now anyway
yup
Got the 2nd jab Saturday - no reactions after 3 full days. ;)
There was like, 14 patients there, the rest staff - huge ceiling (Armory) so lots of air. ;)
Lucky, I felt like death XD
Yeah I've heard. My friends on a private BBS don't quite believe me.
I had other bad luck earlier in life so I'm not employing magical thinking.
Most of my family had a headache for a day or two at worst, I'm the only one who was out for the count
When I got mine, the second one was all like Set Pfizers for Stun.
This is a wet sloth:
Hmm. Picture checks out. It appears to be exactly what JP said it is.
Lars is a little too into this.
Lol. I got Pfiser, first shot I had a headache for a day, arm was sore (like when I get a flu shot, but not hot like a flu shot). Second one I had a headache same day, then the next 2 days was like a horrible migraine and cold
why do you attempt to haunt my dreams
I feel like JP's shop has a corner dedicated to nightmare manufacturing
Ooo, that's a great name for a rock band.
I see the worst things while falling asleep - once asleep the things I see are better than the other ones. ;)
/Tim Burton's assistant
I actually have horrible nightmares that make Lars and wet sloth look like the cutest things on the planet
I started mining today! BTC/Monero π
good luck! what pool(s)?
what are you using? ASIC?
wet sloth?
That too!
BTG, not BTC, sorry. I'm using a GPU, which isn't sounding too profitable, π¬ but we'll see. I'm using Cudominer - cudominer.com - not sponsored π
Cudominer π¬
Lol
If you're GPU mining, I highly suggest mining Ethereum like the bulk of us
ethermine.org is a good pool, Ive been on it for a few weeks now with good results
although profits are way down and getting worse, ETH is still the most profitable for GPU m ining
as long as your GPU is powerful enough
There's a reason a lot of the big mining farms are in Iceland: cheap geothermal power and free cooling.
If I were underhanded, I'd borrow the big V100 GPUs at work for mining instead of just training up machine learning models.
You know that moment when something keeps looking SOO familiar, but you just can't quite place it? Then one day, what make that look familiar shows up with it side-by-side, and all the pieces fall into place...
That day was today for me, after I can't even count how long!
What's weird is, I KNOW the Adafruit address (well, number and street) from seeing it on packages for so long, but it never clicked when I saw the Radiolab address until today when both were in the mailbox at the same time
Also, can anyone tell me how USPS is routinely 2 days faster than UPS for shipping from NYC?
Do you guys think those chips (2 silver colored at the right) could be removed with just hot air and possibly preheat? Or should I look in to a BGA rework station
Maybe one of those reflow ovens could work, manually setting the temp to over the melting point of that solder and just picking the chips up
do you mean the 2 silver chips on the right? I'm only seeing sockets and addon boards on the left
@late fulcrum why not train neural network models to mine crypto
π
so that's what, a CPU and some kind of coprocessor?
big chip is the GPU, small chip is the CPU
That PowerPC chip is a pretty good one
That IHS is probably gonna absorb a lot of the hot air
Itβs not the greatest if its time
But they got a lot out of it
The security was super creative, they jammed an ARM core in the middle of the CPU die
It's not a monster like the Cell/BBE, but with some clever coding to keep all those execution units busy, it could crank pretty hard.
But yeah basically I want to yoink those chips from that PCB and put them on a new PCB that I design
Need the chips off to map traces and reverse engineer it
My plan is to just use the diode mode on my multimeter and just figure out where absolutely everything goes to make the schematic
is this a wii
It is
i might be stupid
oh alright
I was right thinking those circular ports were the Gamecube ports
They are lol
The wii is just an upgraded gamecube
The earlier models have the ports by default
Later models can have them soldered on actually
Later ones like the Family apparently dont have the ports
Fun fact, the Family editions use the same boards as the original, they just don't solder on the Gamecube ports
Exactly
The PCB is so huge for how little the console has
This is all you need with a couple relocated components
I've installed windows 3.11 on a homebrewed Wii many times
I don't know why
but i have
Summary of most things I do lol
was that through dosbox?
I remember trying fruitlessly to get windows 95 running on dosbox...
I did get DOOM to run on my phone through it
it was very slow, but it was almost playable
(with an OTG cable + USB hub + mouse/keyboard)
So you guys think hot air and preheat might work?
hmm preheat might be tricky
audio amp bottom left, NAND top right, composite video chip top left?
It switches between ETH, BTG, XMR, and RVN. But, thanks for the advice π
Yeah, I think
but don't trust me π
I kinda hope that NVIDIA acquires ARM, because I think ARM software will increase
I thought nVidia already had. It could cause some problems for Apple, as Apple and nVidia aren't getting along these days.
I didn't think so.... I'll look
Huh, I guess I read early speculation as established fact. I can imagine some big tech (Apple and Intel among them) being against it.
Yeah, they are. I think it'll go through, but I'm no expert π
The article also mentions Microsoft, which seems an odd objector (they seem pretty wedded to X86), and Google (who already has PowerPC in their back pocket).
I don't think they want over-competition by NVIDIA partnered companies/NVIDIA AI boards/development
nVidia is making good money selling servers, so you're right, if they could source the CPUs and GPUs themselves, they'd have a nice little business that would be difficult to compete with.
π
Also, like, fool is a lousy clickbait news source.
There's better news sources, but Fool was the most recent I could find
Yah.
I had thought it was a done deal, and was curious what Apple's next move would be (my guess was either roll their own GPUs, or offer an olive branch to Intel to use theirs)
I mean, most of all, nVidia owning ARM kinda breaks the sense of detente at least for the server/desktop marketplace.
My Mac has an Intel i5, so I figured the latter....
Yeah...
WW3 - NVIDIA vs the world
LOLπ
If nVidia does manage it, I would of course expect them to offer servers full of their own chips, but perhaps also an integrated CPU/GPU, quickly followed by a fairly amazing SBC.
I hope that happens π
I also hope the SBC is around 75-100 π΅ , just to be affordable and a Raspberry Pi competitor
I'm imagining something like a board with a chip on it, basically like a breakout board, but with something like an HDMI connector.
And yes, I would totally buy some
I didn't think about that, but that would be cool
"And yes, I would totally buy some"
- madbodger
Me too π
I also imagined something like a cheaper better Jetson Nano
Like this, but NVIDIA/ARM
Sorry for the dark pic
"a strange game, the only way to win, is to enable RTX"
LOL π€£
Yup. A taste of normalcy π
hmm so re: desoldering these 2 BGA chips in the middle https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/336571109430263816/849474445981646868/image0.png
looks like one of the cheap bga rework machines wouldn't help
there is a THICK ground plane in this PCB so the preheater wouldn't do much
and the IHS I bet is going to direct all the heat on to the die and not the pads
The thick ground plane is why you want the preheater
Why do you want to desolder them?
Looking for a way to get a Wii portable even smaller?
looks like they're missing their heat sink brush with that much thermal paste
Your CPU has been taken over by Cthulu.
the verge special
Just got my 1st covid shot!
:highfive: Congrats!
that is sooooooo cursed and for some reason makes me extremely disgusted π
especially with the gray tint to it...you just know that's conductive...
TV almost did not fit XD
Oof
Got 2 new CRTs in the past couple of days
a portable colour CRT, probably meant for camping and car use and such; and a Philips P-50, CRT, Radio and Cassette deck
(is my life just collecting smaller CRTs now)
Nice. I want some tiny ones...
I think I have some spare 40CB4 CRTs if those would suit you
my keyboard Illuminating the front of it
I'll take anything XD
so I want to make a DIY multimeter diode mode circuit
should I limit voltage to like 1v or will 5v mess stuff up if it runs at a lower voltage
ok can anyone help me with this?
i was in my back yard and then suddenly there's this high pitch sound. it starts at around 15khz and goes all the way to around 21khz. i even have a screenshot of it from a spectrograph
it's very inconstant with random starts and stops. i can't figure out a direction. it just sounds like it's everywhere
it loops for 3-4 times before stopping
that's super strange
yeah it's weird. it's also really bothering me
maybe one of those things that are supposed to scare away animals
Amazon.com : AMERFIST Solar Animal Repeller, 2021 Ultrasonic Mole Repellent, Rat, Squirrel, Deer, Raccoon, Skunk, Rabbit, Mole, Dog, Cat, Waterproof with Motion Detector, USB Rechargeable, Flashing Light (Green) : Garden & Outdoor
like this
well if that's the case, i'm going to have to ask whoever installed it to turn it off
look around, can you see one?
let me take a look
π
glad you found it!
next step was gonna be to get a bunch of directional microphones out to figure out where the sound is coming from
I think the model I sent is the exact one
Now get a shotgun...
That seems like an ultra-sound idea.
@ancient kindle Usually diode check circuits are current limited and measure the resulting forward voltage.
Or at least that's the au current trend.
Congratulations you are in a very small percentage club that can hear the high frequency. Those are absolute murder to my ears
They are meant to keep dogs out of the yard
They KILL my ears
I kept trying to find out if I had tinnitus
And I found one of those
more people can hear it than you think
you lose the extreme top end of the frequency spectrum as you age
Cleanest cable management ever
Totally no cables shoved into a small space behind the internal panel...
he he he
So the RGB peripherals I got we overpriced trash... Gonna build my own!
the one of the kind coolant as thermaltake is still testing the options to have 3d effects on coolant https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/643621694807736321/849805024111755274/unknown.png this is gold
when that coolant was on the loop it made look great even with RGB
It looks like Odo in his liquid form...
i saw blue and red of that too
I just run clear distilled water XD I tried using some UV dye for a couple months and ended up having a cruddy loop... decided to KISS
[Keep It Stupid Simple]
Yup. I haven't heard of a brand of coolant that hasn't had someone report problems -- but you can't get much cleaner than distilled water. Also have a silver coil to help prevent bacterial growth
Been running for... 6 months now? just have to top it off now and then
IT LIVES! Now for the hard part: installing Windows :P
Mmm default rainbows
Haha, Windows installer doesn't like this
First tiny, now giant XD
Whoa! File copy was like, less than a second!
800x600 on a 4k screen?
Appears that way XD
Man, I think it was... A minute to install?
If that?
zoom zoom
Except it's crashing randomly DX and I don't know if it's the build of Windows that's the problem or hardware...
Well, I'll have to figure it out tomorrow... Bleh
Good luck π
How do I make a magnet change the magnetic field without moving the magnet?
A permanent magnet or an electromagnet?
with a permanent magnet...well you can get cylindrical magnets with the poles aligned along the width, and you still have to move it to change the polarity (but the profile remains consistent as the magnet rotates) but with an electromagnet you can flip it around 180 degrees by reversing the current
Yeah, sorry, the magnetic field of a permanent magnet is more or less... permanent. So you can't easily change it except by moving it around.
you can get rid of it entirely by letting it reach its curie temperature without a strong magnetic field nearby and holding it there for a while π
I really need some better debugging. Not software; tiny (and some not so tiny) flying critters, that are very annoying. π
A new project for you! https://www.tomshardware.com/news/raspberry-pi-mosquito-laser
?
seems hilarious and useful
if you have 3 electromagnets all at right angles to each other and an analog controller (or a digital controller with a DAC) then you can mix and match intensities to get arbitrary direction fields
i read the article and its very interesting
(southern accent) those mosquitos be causing lots of trouble for everyone from the polar fringes to the blistering deserts
always when reminded of mosquitos, i have a southern accent in mind
I live in a swamp so...mosquitoes are just a given
and no, not in the south π
mosquitoes can go suck a...vein jk pls don't
yikes
ive heard mosquitoes have been found as north as Nunavut
at least the ones around here are just little guys
they do tend to make some just uncouth density clouds
where im from they are large
there's been more than once riding a bike at dusk when I inhale a cloud of mosquitoes
taught me to ride with my mouth closed and meter my breathing through my nose to not get any stuck in my nasal passages
The most bothersome critters here are the ones smaller than the openings in the screens. Second place goes to the moths, who like the lights and thus cause lighting variance on the keyboard and work areas. Third place is the 3" mosquitoes.
Well, the really large moths don't really bother me, they're too big to get inside. Luna Moths almost a foot across.
Roaches:
Allow us to introduce ourselves
No roaches out here so far from civilization...but I definitely interacted with them before I moved out of the city.
had roaches when I was living in florida...woke up one night after a particularly restless bout of sleep and looked up at the ceiling to see 3 roaches skittering around...got the apartment supervisor to get the exterminator in there the next day
turns out there was a tiny crack in the caulking around the windowsills and they were living in the walls
apparently they can squeeze through flat wide openings really easily
the ones around here come from the wild into pipes from sewers and into your house, they are giant around here
yeah those ones were only like an inch long tops
I even make friends with house flies and get them to land on my hands and hang out
there is one honey bee around here thats very friendly
even got a picture of it once because I was telling my friends about how sometimes I could get the flies to land on my hands and then I tried it and it worked again so I took a pic
lol
the little bee around here know me so well it just flies next to me when usually walking home
then I showed them in person and one of them (long time family friend who's basically a second mom) told me I'm the devil
huh
also, master hand???
bug friends
yes, yes I do π
responding to the master hand comment???
no, "bug friends"
Super Smash Bros.
oh that.
I do like Piranha Plant
Game and Watch is just like...if you can use him he's ridiculous, if you can't you look like a fool
judge 9 is a OHKO for anyone 13% and above unless if shield or metal
yeah
for rob, its just spam Side B
you just have to spin to win
yeah, with yoshi my tactic is to spam jump above people and down b at just the right moment when they're stuck in an animation that won't hurt me by the time I hit
arm rotor is side b for tob
lol
yoshi's FS is so hilarious
least favourite SSBU character???
hmmmm.....good question...I'd have to say King Krool
but not because I don't like playing him, because I don't like playing when my friend plays him because he has learned his animation timing down to the frame it seems
and he's really good at lining up that shot while you're flying through the air
Jigglypuff, Pyra, Villager, and Isabelle are annoying and stupid
Lucina and Corrin are toxic
kirby is so generic
but adorable
yeah I like using kirby when I want to wreck someone's day because he's sooooooo easy to cheese
but I don't play him much because of that
I only play when I get the chance over at my friend's place, but apparently I picked up the controls really quick
and I learn the characters' specials pretty well if I have a chance to just test them out
which is why it's always best to learn dodges first π
so you have time to test your other combos
i never shield
I rarely do
i dont know more of the advanced moves
not that I wouldn't, I just always forget it's a thing
i know how to do it, i just dont care
oh I definitely know how, I just forget in the moment that shielding would help to actually go into shield mode
and if I try to train myself to respond, I always hit the shield too late and mess things up
much rather do a dynamic defense than a static one
ever feel like you want to play video games to procrastinate but you feel terrible while playing and you don't enjoy it but you also don't want to work on anything?
well...if not then good, it's a terrible feeling
I really want to hop on Take on Mars but idk if I could really get into it
if you could bring any character OTHER THAN to smash, then who???
like any character from any game?
logical
I'd probably choose Chell, all kitted out
no need for attacks when you can portal your enemies off the map π
special move? spawn companion cube.
smash? hit someone with a companion cube you've brought to a high enough speed between two portals above one another.
seems like a reasonable debuff for being able to teleport
huh
i would like to see the zombie and enderman split off
into a new dual brawler with different stats and FS other then Steve/Alex
also have the enderman be its normal size again
it looks horrible to be like that
also zombies and endermen cant craft
just simple logic
in my opinion R.O.B. should have one of his "colours" just be him with his Ancient Minister outfit
as he is the ancient minister
Endermen should be able to move parts of the map around
(haven't played since minecraft stuff was added)
So I slept thru all 19 of my alarms spaced 5 minutes apart this morning... and was half an hour late....
You need an alarm that gives you an electric shock or something.
Ouch
yeah
I don't respond to light
I need a giant vibration motor to shake the bed to oblivion
Well, this isn't often a problem... just an off day
Best solution: Go to bed earlier
Growing up in Florida, I don't respond to light either. Amusingly, I did bolt a walldriver to my waterbed, but not for wake-up use, I hooked it to the LFE channel of my sound system, so I could feel the subsonic special effects. When that giant ship rumbles overhead in Star Wars, it's impressive when you can feel the shaking!
i have fused with music
Only a active buzzer / someone shaking me / waking up 10 hours later naturally from sleep time will only wake me up ._. π
i know how to shake that for sleeper it feel like feet is taking off when its just isnt it
thats also other kind oif deaf alarm doctor.
my alarm clock comes with plug in back
its to turn on by alarm. it can be vibrator for bed, lights, fans, etc
well limited to certain amps but yeah
in old days before led lights, I could use 2 60 watt lights so it has plenty of power for that
right now its with 2 of 1600 lumen led lights
I just wake up naturally. I strongly dislike alarm clocks.
Same here. Plus if I need to wake up at an earlier time than normal, I just wake up at that time.
I wish I had internal auto-wakeup functions
to "just wake up at that time"
I have a package being delivered to me via Royal Mail :O
I feel fancy
the thing was in here what i watched and was on during the adafruit shows https://youtu.be/GGnavoi5qEk

Permanent magnet
Do you believe we cound arrange a bunch of natural magnets to create electrical energy nearly forever?
The permanent magnet's magnetic energy last nearly forever... And it's a energy, we could explore it in the future.
For me it's impressive if I create an inductor with a metal inside it will make the metal magnetic forever! With way less energy than the sum of all magnetic energy he would expend in it's lifetime.
I mean just a small W will make the metal magnetic for billions of years!
No, magnetism alone doesnt generate energy. Its the change of magnetic field that does, and it requires energy to do so.
You can think of it the same way as gravity. Even though the Earth's gravity is always "on", you can't use it to generate infinite power, because you have to lift stuff up and then drop it. Same with magnets.
Yep, that's why I asked before "how can we make a magnet change it's magnetic field without moving".
Iβm pretty sure there are ways to profit energy with magnets (make more than was put in to the system to start it) but also magnets will lose magnetism over time
You can heat it, but you need ebergy to do that π
Another classic perpetual motion technique
We just need those suits that turn stress in to electricity
Then all of our energy problems are solved
... These formulas of magnetic field works so well that makes me angry, it looks like I can't make anything new.
Bohr's professor told him that physics wouldn't evolve anymore because everything that has to be discovered was discovered with Newtonian physics...
Then it came Modern Physics...
That had different equations than Newtonian physics to describe sometimes the same Natural Phenomenon...
Sometimes Newtonian physics didn't work for very small things for example...
My point is, I won't relly on what already exist π
For example, guys... In high school chemistry...
Remember that there are chemical reactions that occur right to left and at the same time left to right?
Where this infinity energy come from?
The same could occur with magnets...!
Mantaining equilibrium!
Yes, lots of reactions work like that. There are similar quantum effects too. Some good experiments even show that particles and antiparticles spontaneously appear, and then annihilate each other. A few people have posited that if there were a way to to separate them before they disappeared, that could be harnessed as an energy source. Some very smart people have tried to figure out a practical way to do so, but while there have been some interesting papers, there haven't been any verifiable demonstrations that I know of. One of the approaches required a black hole, and harvesting the particles that got split by the event horizon: I don't expect to see that one turn into a commercial product!
I didn't say that!
Although the microscopic black holes that played some plot points in James Hogan's "Giants Star" novels did have some repercussions: the houses containing them had massive foundations to support their weight against earth's gravity.
The other microscopic black holes that turned up in "Thrice Upon a Time" had other effects, as they orbited the earth's core, drilling tiny holes through whatever they passed through. π¬
One of the scientists investigating the damage was asked "what could cause this", and said he didn't know, but "something like an armor-plated bacterium with a rocket engine?"
I wonder what sensors they use to detect it... I bet it's all magnetic fields and electrical field sensors...
There's a bunch of first-rate research involved in even measuring events like that.
I imagine...
Articles about the Casimir effect, which is not the same thing, but in a similar realm, make interesting reading.
Your high school physics book was way better than mine!
Hahaha it didn't have fun Casimir's equations
If it had it were maxell's simplified...
To learn calculus I had to jump and buy calculus book in high school
Because my school didn't have ap calculus
Mine did, but I stupidly took computer math instead of trigonometry beforehand, and it turns out AP calculus without knowing trig is hard
I started learning Calculus at 14.
It took many years to see what I learnt from a real professor in a real class
You mean sin,cos, tan?
Yeah, that stuff π
I'm trying to find the criminal who made all this mess...
Torricelli is so close to the crime scene that I think it was him...
I see...
All I see is wide-eyed innocence
Yes, who would think a great physicist like him would do this?
I think he's using his good reputation to cover up his crimes...
I taught myself trig to write a program lol
I was learning about converting between polar and Cartesian coordinates for simple gravitational simulation on particles
Then I learned it again at Full Sail because they wouldn't let me test out of it and was required to take precalc because it was "remedial" and isn't accredited (same for Calc) when in the art degree programs, high school geometry is considered college level and is accredited...
Wouldn't want them art students to feel bad now would you? But we don't care about how the tech students feel... Tech students went into that field for the pain of it as far as administration is concerned
I tried to transfer my math credits from full sail... I was told that in the tech programs, only linear algebra and above transfers
(didn't make it that far because group projects; the bane of a good solo worker)
Learning something for a specific purpose is my favorite way to learn
It's how it sticks for me, otherwise it's some ethereal pattern that I didn't quite make the application connection for
Taught myself boolean algebra because it made logic design easier to know the math behind it
I honestly just wish I wasn't lied to and coerced into debt with a curriculum that's intentionally designed to weed out not the people who can't do it but the people who don't play nice with others. If they had been honest and said that group projects were the thing messing up most students' grades I never would have gone. They also told me there would be no prerequisites which didn't apply to my field. They straight up lied.
The "digital literacy" class they force you to take and do a group project in that's most of your grade is like if you took a high school tech class, got rid of the making a web page curriculum, and mashed it with the first page of every programming book ever
(the "history of computing" section they all seem to have)
I hit different obstacles in school, but the result was similar
I started learning programming in my high school using CS106A Stanford video classes
I also learn with MIT OCW with
Prof. Eric Grimson
This professor told a lot of jokes in class
And the students didn't laught at all
I felt so much shame even that it was in the past and I'm in a country >1000km away...
It was so many constant jokes and the students only didn't laught.
Never.
That would bother me too.
How do I get Sublime Text 4 for RPI4??
A quick web search implies that it may not be available, and if it is, you might need the 64-bit version of the OS to run it.
I have 64-bit
Another crime scene, and the same physicist, Torricelli, was there. It can't be a coincidence.
You don't wanna know why my shelf has no books in the botton and why I have a flying trash can next to my table.
What's the model number for a flying trash can?
I don't know about the plastic but the flying part I built all with Adafruit's components... There's an Arduino controlling the helices so it will keep stable on every axis, there's an acelerometer (a very cheap one) mantaining track of everything, so everything the microcontroller does is to direct power to the right motor.
If you punch it , it will automatically come back to the original position.
Maybe in the future I'll install some cameras in the room so if the trash accidentally go out of the trash can it will take the trash before it touches the ground.
...
It's not this, it's just a very bad joke π©
I believe your physicist may be a criminal
Also I think your physicist may, in fact, be a dog
Dang my dog killed the battery on my car by turning on a light thatβs hard to see during the day
oof
And my car has an electronic gear box
I canβt put it in neutral to push it out of the garage π΅
oof
Preference question for microcontrollers, if you have to choose one of the two: mini B or micro B?
Micro.
micro for me as well
Personally I prefer mini because it's easier to tell which way it plugs in and can be easier to plug in
I can see that
Type C is my absolute favorite tho, since you don't need to worry about direction, but it can be a bit tight sometimes...
Depends on how well it's made -- most Mini-B connectors on consumer devices are through-hole soldered joints, but just the opposite for Micro-B...they're surface mount and don't last nearly as long under normal use.
There are exceptions to both of these, of course. But it's so frustrating when you buy a USB-powered ethernet switch, and the micro-usb port literally falls off upon the first time you plug in the cable.
[it was unusually dual-powered -- you could use either mini-b or micro-b. Upon investigating, it was a through-hole vs surface mount.]
I've certainly had a lot more micro breaks than mini, and that's part of it too for me. I have had some SMD mini ports pop off the board too -- but micro is almost always SMD, and I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone, say, knock a device off a table and have not only the port be broken free, but also take a good chunk of traces with it... not pretty
Thankfully C seems to be more robust in that way -- despite the fact that I've never seen a thru-hole C connector, I also haven't seen nearly as many of them get broken [the side pads seem to be much more sturdy, or there's a cutout in the board and it has wings that take the brunt of fall damage and can just be bent back into shape]
Micro B, because it's easier to find the cables and all the smartphones at my house are micro B's so I can easily take the cable. I have a few Arduino Nanos and I avoid using them specially because of the mini B...
The ubiquity of micro up to this point certainly does make finding cables easier... And I can imagine if you live somewhere that didn't get a lot of them and now they're expensive, that's all the more reason to avoid them
One day I had to order a single mini B cable from a local store and I had to wait to come to my home.
I do not need to do this with micro b, ever.
I guess the fact I already had a few hundred mini cables helped me like them more, lol
lol
I never saw someone like you in my whole life, more mini B's than micro B's that's insane.
I totally have more micros than minis XD
I just have..... so many cables
I still have like 50 VGA cables, and that's after giving loads away!
This is what happens when you work IT.... you collect
My father is just like you.
He just don't throw cables, electrinics, etc... away...
He just keep it, for years and years...
It's a waste to throw good ones in the trash... and when you get rid of all of them, THAT is when you ABSOLUTELY NEED THEM.
But it is good to pair down... I'd probably only keep like 10 VGA cables if I could find homes for the rest
I think I only have like 12 VGA displays at this point, and they all have cables, and those don't die often, lol
Hahaha my father aways say that he will use them in the future and in many cases he indeed used them!
Sometimes you use them for other uses, too -- like, I have a TONNE of old POTS phone cables, and I recently used one to hook a NeoPixel ring to a Pico, lol
I use scrap CAT5/6 cable as breadboard jumper cables, lol
oh that's a good idea
I've thrown away at least 1 ton of cat 5 cables at work
ewaste service adores us
oof
I don't think I've ever actually thrown any away
Probs 50 tonnes of insulation, lol
The tiny bits that get cut off or leftovers from a spool, lol
Or a broken cable that I can't figure out where the break is and it just isn't worth the time
Anyone know what that black component in the middle could be? Itβs marked with 27000 and K129 on the package, and the silkscreen label for it is X1
The other side of the PCB is a BGA GPU
4 contacts, 1 on each corner
Hmm... is it some sort of weird capacitor? I think I've seen ICs that were actually 2+ capacitors [for... reasons?]
Idk, it doesnβt look like a capacitor array
There are some resistor arrays at the top of the pic
I donβt think so, thereβs a massive power section on the rest of the board
I have no idea what the heck all that is doing, but probs power regulation in that area?
They make an entire buck converter circuit for 1v 1.5v 3.3v and I think 5v
CPUs/GPUs do tend to have additional smoothing caps, so I wouldn't be entirely surprised if there's even more power regulation on some devices
Guessing you can't find a datasheet or specsheet for the board?
Wait, is that a Wii?
knew it XD
There is copious amounts of documentation out there for trimming the wii, but no one has tried what Iβm trying
Absolute mad[lad/lass/?]
Looks like a crystal
Judging by the visible footprint and nearby capacitors
And if you trace out how capacitors and the resistor near by are connected
I'll be a madlad if I can pull it off lol
hmmmmm kinda wish I had an oscilloscope now to test
I think you're a madlad for trying
It could be a rectifier bridge.
I think they make on their own these components, right?
So it's harder to people reverse-engineer their hardware...
Is that it?
it's definitely not a custom component
they would proudly write RVL on it if so
there are like 4 custom components on the board, the rest are off the shelf
hmmm maybe I could make a lil DIY oscilloscope with a teensy
27000 might mean 27.000 MHz
This can be very fun.
On christimans this year I'll have an osciloscope and a voltage source! π
I am so happy with this.
I have so many things I want to buy now
oscilloscope, hot air gun, BGA rework station, rework oven
I have a hot air gun it's so strong!
And it really works...
But I preffer soldering iron...
Show me someone who can work with BGA using a soldering iron, and I'll sell you a bridge...
Like a bridge that cars can go over, lol
for how much
hello
I think you're correct
can't find a single crystal on this board
except for X1
also I found out something really critical for this project
this revision of motherboard has all non power traces on the outer layers
so it makes every trace for this visible
Wait, it's marked X1? Isn't X always a crystal?
I can't find my box of Windows keys
In good news, I got rid of my display artifacting with a different HDMI cable, and I haven't had crashes since updating Windows and display drivers and GPU firmware...
hmm
Maybe they decided that counting 0, 1, 2, 3 or 1, 2, 3 is silly and decided to get rid of 1
this had to be an expensive board to make
I just noticed that almost the entire top and bottom of the board is extra ground plane where there are no signal traces
and there are thick copper plated borders
no wonder they reduced to 4 layers later on
hmm what could FIL2 be
dead center of this image, has a yellow silkscreen box
FIL2 is what it's labeled, and I can't find FIL1
looks like a capacitor but 4 sides with contacts
I think you're on the same timezone as me, are you in New York,Boston,Rio de Janeiro, Sergipe....? This vertical line...
Good night!

I wonder if there would be a way to make a BGA socket on the cheap
So I donβt have to resolder these packages for every board rev
I know that those expensive real ones are out there but maybe I could make one myself
Amazon knows very well lol
That oven comes with masking tape attaching the thermal shielding together, so it burns when you use the oven
So replacing with kapton tape is essential
Yes I do :D
What does this reflow oven do?
You know the benefit to having a 1st Gen beta Amazon Echo?
No support for Amazon Sidewalk
lol
I don't have a Sidewalk option to disable...
Wait, I have all 1st gen devices, do none of them support Sidewalk?
I much prefer the hockey puck look?
I enjoy my old fashion spy can
I donβt mind the fabric, itβs the additional features that newer ones have that compromise privacy more than necessary
That's also not good... I'm shallow and made my choice based entirely on aesthetics XD
Bakes solder paste following the paste manufacturerβs temperature profile
So you can just use a stencil to get all the paste down, place the components, then bake
Makes soldering a ton easier and is necessary for stuff like BGA and whatever those buck converter chip packages are called
EZ-bake circuits
Yea
I built my own :D
Reflow oven?
Yee
I'm annoyingly having difficulty locating a manual for an old piece of kit I just got
oof
when i search up philips p-50, it only gives me modern day TVs
Do you guys have a degree from a technical school?
I don't think they teach this in an engineering degree...
I have an IST degree
I don't even have a degree yet lmao
I do not miss school XD
I currently work helpdesk
But hope to impress the Adafruit gods and get a job with them XD
It's very possible.
You're smart.
Why don't you send your curriculum?
They are located in New York I think.
i have literally no qualifications
But you're so young, you're what? 12?
12 XD
lmao
What
gotta be 13 to be on Discord
I turn 20 in just over 2 weeks
Oh... Sorry.
20 is the new 12
lol
;)
Twelve!
Twelve
lord
twelve whats?
twelve 5/3rds of a year
Eudecio thought I was 12
I'm not even sure how you got that
How old do you think I am?
Wait you saw my face and thought 12???
Yes.
That's not too unbelievable actually
You do have a young face
It's weird, because for years I've been told I look older
Heck, I still get people thinking I'm in my mid 20's
lol
...
Does anyone recoginize it?
It's not a complete development but it's the foundations so I think you can bet what it is :)
π
why, it's French, of course.
it looks like Portugese, and calculus
I was gonna say Spanish maths
Γ pau, Γ© pedra, Γ© o fim do caminho. Γ um resto de toco, Γ© um pouco sozinho.
... buenos nachos
That makes me irrationally angry
What? Good nachos?
I like this music :)
@jovial path I learned most of the lyrics. ;)
I think I listened to it when I was a kid.
Art Garfunkel did it in English.
Very good recording of Elis and Tom:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1tOV7y94DY
I made a project of light for bicicles
With buttons to turn right or left
But covid doesn't allow me to play outside.
Guys use good masks really...
COVID is very bad :(
Even if you're very healthy, COVID still is very bad.
You're very smart :)
I was quite ill, so I (for some strange reason) decided to learn the song. I've seen the translation but I don't really know it as I'm singing it. ;)
sure, looks like Riemann tensor and Christoffel symbols
So when I couldn't get out of bed I had something to occupy myself with! ;)
why was my previous message higlighted red???
did I somehow trigger the modbot?
That means you have it locally but the server does not have it at all.
Your client paints it in red so you'll be aware of it.
it's a form of netlag
sure, looks like Riemann tensor and Christoffel symbols
worked now
Oh that's the Reimann tensor?
Yep.
Riemann curvature tensor has 4 indices (3 lower, one upper)
Main tool in differential geometry, in particular in general relativitiy
Yeah I'm aware of it but not in native script. ;)
It's over my head but I retain nouns and nomenclature pretty well.
TBH, it has been a while since I actually used it myself, but I do meet it frequently in papers I read
In one of the movies the guy refers to Reimann - probably that Russel Crowe one.
I read stuff that's over my head fairly often - I used to also listen to people speaking when I didn't understand a word of it. ;)
If you don't give them a stop message, and ask reasonable questions, they often keep going.
You are a mathematics researcher?
@jovial pathyes
What is your field?
algebra, to be precise, representation theory
I think we are all in this boat... just in different areas. I listen to a lot of discussions about EE in this discord many of which are over my head
I think as long as you're honest, if you're willing to listen 'anyway' a lot of people will oblige.
(gives them a chance to say it out loud, for one thing)
I guess it's a form of stagefright - people don't get past it because they feel .. fraudulent, maybe.
The same ideas hold when it's medical stuff talking to the doctor.
I love to hear about other people researches even if it is not my field I love to hear.
Even that are over my head (this means I don't understand completely).
(?)
We'd go to public speaking events where the presenter knew something fairly specific.
'lectures' that's the word.
You can talk hours about this with me and I'll be glad to hear and probabily I'll have a new friend :)
Until we get out of radio range (space-travel)
How would you like to wake up in a space ship and realize your great-grandparent had an idea, and decided to join a crew - and they all set out into deep space .. and now here you are, on a generation ship. ;)
ok so I have an idea
for an altoids tin project could I just skip the ground plane in the PCB and hook up the tin itself as shielding
say if I needed a 6 layer PCB, removing a ground plane layer could probably allow a 4 layer PCB to be done instead
and that's a fraction of the cost for manufacturing
A typical board will often have dozens of connections to the ground plane, so I expect it would cost more in manufacturing to manually solder all those points to an external shield.
Calling occupants, of interplanetary craft. I rode my bicycle up that hill, just to see 'em, fore, and aft.
Pro adult tip: work a job with top notch dental insurance so you donβt have to go years without dental work
oof
π I think that is true, my father has the best insurence plan ever and he never goes to the dentist. π
I think he goes every 10 years... β
My dentist told me I have to go back every 6 months...
She makes my teeths so smooth...
It's very good.
πͺ
I wonder if I could create dental equipaments with an mini arduino...
Most of it are DC motors that spin ._.
Kids are facinated with dental equipaments, when I was a kid my dentist allowed me to play with her electrical equipaments, it was a pretty cool day...
Someone had shared a Windows Terminal theme that turned it into a Portal console, but I can't find the link... Does whoever posted that remember and have the link? DX
FOUND IT https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/no7mg8/i_tried_to_make_my_windows_terminal_look_like/
Does anyone know of a KiCad footprint for https://www.adafruit.com/product/4458 ?
worst case, you'd have to use the datasheet to make your own
I'm facinated by LED's...
They are so small...
And they are diodes...
It so hard to understand the way they work deeply!
Transistors are crazier
Chemically and etc....
Weβre down to 2nm transistors by IBM
Magic
I'd imagine they use computers to do the fine detail
π
I was searching some partners for biomedical research last week
And I found a group of researchers at MIT who study...
Nanobiological engineering
It was a fancy word like this... It is not precise
But they created equipaments to manipulate microorganisms to the nanoscale
The word is not precise.
I built a computer
Me too , it runs BASIC
Like Apple 2
But it doesn't operate on nanoscale
I think this is a shared technology
There's no way there's a coicidence of IBM creating 2nm transistors
And exist a engineering field in biomedical engineering
That creates equipamemts for nanoscale microorganisms...
How is your computer?
Running smoothly now :D
In the consumer class, yup!
Lol
It is kinda power hungry... as are its brothers and sisters...
Windows is activated now :D
10 years ago it was possible to connect 2 video cards in the same computer
You can do this today?
Or the video card is too powerfull
And can't work with another
Otherwise the computer would explode of so much power
Yeah, you can do multi GPU, but for gaming it's generally considered a dumb idea, as most games don't support SLI [which is what enables 2 GPUs to work together for a game], so there's no point in having 2
But 2 of my 3 workstations have 2 cards so I can do bigger projects, because some software can use however many random GPUs are in the system
Ah yes I need 12 monitors on one PC
But even in SLI supported games, the gains aren't generally worth it -- 1.5-1.8x for some titles with 2 cards, and usually you can just get the next card up for less than 1.5x the price
I currently have 6 monitors on my old main, lol... gonna go to 8 on this one
But I probably will just get a Quadro P620 for moar monitors
I want more than the 4 I currently have
More is good
But also high resolution good... I'm sitting in front of a 4K 55" TV and it's lovely, like having 4 monitors with no bezels
Although it's temporary
1080p is fine for 1 or 2 things... can't fit so much
This is why I have 6 monitors
But I still think it's high definition.
Yep... Full HD
Resolution only makes a difference depending on what you're doing -- like, for work, I want as much on screen as possible, so higher resolution lets me fit more
For me, it's good.
But it's only saving me from the work of oppening a new window...
It's like <2s
Ok... Sometimes you need to have two windows oppened...
That is true...
I need to see multiple things at once XD like the phone, call list, team chat, ticket window, user's machine, etc
Or even more...
You could sell processing power to Pixar, what do you think?
They send you the archive to render.
You render in your computer
Then send the result to Pixar
You could earn money with this.
Sorry, bad joke....
You really can't do this... π©
Lmao, Pixar has a bit more processing power than I do...
They probably have workstations with the 3990WX and 256GB of RAM, dual/triple/quad Quadro or Radeon WX cards, etc
Ok. Time to go, I have to watch The Walking Dead otherwise my brain will explode of so much engineering.
12h a day everyday including weekends...
Lol, have fun. I really need to catch up, I am WAY behind on TWD
Too many shows, not enough time
Or my brain would explode or suddenly I would turn into a microcontroller
lol
TFW you upgrade the wrong system to Debian unstable
HS is in the books!
are you sure you want to post your full diploma on the internet like that?
that's a ton of personal information just out there for anyone to see now
hello
Young person, you shouldn't trust any community besides your parents...
true
There are bad persons in good places...
sadly π¦
nothing is perfect sadly
But I'm not your teacher to be a non-parent guiding tou throught life, so...
I won't say anything else.
thanks for the tips anyways!
Trust no one, not even yourself
Stay secret, stay safe
Most importantly, stay inside and stay in bed. The world is dangerous, no reason to go out there
Because of COVID.
Quick 861DW 1000W Digital Rework Station with LCD Display - Power Soldering Accessories - Amazon.com
Probably gonna get one of these bad boys when my paycheck rolls in
Hmmm Iβm seeing now the preheater section of the bga rework stations for like $100
So a quick + a preheater could get me full bga rework for less money and much much more utility
AMONG US!
ok
sigh
fun
Yup... That might explain the crashes...
yeets Intel out a window AND STAY OUT
never again
RAM errors are no fun
Nope. I thought it was a graphics driver for a while -- might still be, might be both. I blame Intel
Fortunately, there are many modern alternatives to the long-obsolete X86 chips.
Pretty sure it's the memory controller
I unironically love the look of the fail message
I still need x86 for Windows, lol... My 5950X is smooth
Happily, I don't need windows either, with all its nutty quirks.
I think MacOS is the one with nutty quirks XD
I've been using BSD since the early 1980s so I'm used to its quirks and prefer it to AT&T style Unix.
Happily, Unix has outgrown some of its worst decisions (EINTR? please) over the years
I played with FreeBSD once...
Unrelated: Windows at 4K 100% scaling on a 14" screen is completely unusable
But on a 55" TV it's like 4x 1080p 27" monitors with no bezels :D
Alas, my 50" TV is only 1366x768
Yeah, it's a really old plasma screen. It got zapped in a recent lightning storm, I'm going to make one attempt to repair it, and if that fails, I'll get a modern unit (probably skipping straight over LCDs to OLED)
It turns out the power supply has a whopping 53 electrolytic capacitors (some hiding inconveniently under the heatsinks)
Omai
I was able to obtain the service manual, which has schematics for all the logic boards, but alas, as usual, not for the power supply (which is presumably bought in)
You're certainly in for a treat if you get a new TV, even cheap ones are pretty amazing compared to the top end from that era
Only having 2 HDMI inputs has been frustrating me for a while, and software updates for some STBs have broken compatibility with the set's older HDCP implementation. I have repaired this set twice before.
If I feel like watching TV, my choices are the 22" LCD in the bedroom, or the 30" cinema display on my computer desk.
Inputs... Definitely a higher end tend to have more, this one only has 2
i don't know how many inputs my tv has, i currently use none of them
O-O
Direct drive to the CRT grids???
The living room TV has 4
??
I figure if you're not using the set's inputs, perhaps you're just using the set as a CRT power supply and direct driving the tube.
oh! no! I'm not talking about my CRTs
Lol
I'm absolutely using my CRTs inputs
Looking at last year's models, I can get a bigger screen, 4k resolution, and more inputs, for less than I paid for the plasma.
I have a LCD TV I just... don't use
We live in a magical time!
There are creative things you can do with unneeded LCD panels. Magic mirrors are popular
DIY LCD projector!
Oh, no, not gonna dismantle this
That would be a lorj magic mirror
i already own a high end projector
LMAO, I meant unneeded LCDs
it was a gift from my fiancee's dad, he got it free from where he works, it cost about $1.5k new
I bought a broken fancy laser projector with the intention of taking it apart for the lasers. But, ironically, it showed up fully operational.
It's only been used like... a few months in total, and it's like 10 years old
it's gonna last me forever at this rate
(i never use it myself)
I did find a projection TV by the side of the road, and stripped the CRTs and optics out of it.
ooooh
One each red, green, and blue
