I guess for most equipment this doesn't really matter anyway because there's a transformer that creates something like 24V (or whatever) and the rest of the circuit runs off that?

delicate stream
#

My computers eat like 2.5kW XD

#

At least

dusty citrus
#

@polar bloom Not sure how to answer that one. ;)

#

When you're down to 24 V traditionally you aren't using a lot of Watts.

#

So you wouldn't run a heavy electrical motor from 24V usually.

#

(golf carts are 48V iirc)

polar bloom
#

What voltage would a microwave run at internally?

dusty citrus
#

(electric fork lifts too)

#

I think a microwave could be near the kilovolt range.

ancient kindle
#

Yeah you use higher volts for higher wattages typically

The weird exception is people's insistence on using a lot of amperes at 5 VDC .. for LED strip lighting. ;)

#

I've heard car audio buffs say you use really truly thick wires to feed those high-power amps they like so much.

delicate stream
#

I think microwaves bump into thousands of volts?

dusty citrus
#

TWT's have pretty high voltages. I want to say 'plate' voltages there, but I don't remember.

#

Oh but microwave ovens use the other thing.

Car audio buffs are a special breed lol

#

The current of audio stuff isn’t super high, it’s high voltage AC to the speakers

dusty citrus
#

I hadn't thought about car audio as HV AC but yeah that makes sense.

#

72 V springs to mind for no reason whatsoever. ;)

ancient kindle
#

Well it’s not a consistent voltage usually

#

But yeah the car audio kids usually blast music so loud that the current does get high

#

Which is pointless since you’re gonna blow your eardrums at the point where you would need to reasonably worry about cable gauge

You know that moment when something keeps looking SOO familiar, but you just can't quite place it? Then one day, what make that look familiar shows up with it side-by-side, and all the pieces fall into place...

That day was today for me, after I can't even count how long!

#

What's weird is, I KNOW the Adafruit address (well, number and street) from seeing it on packages for so long, but it never clicked when I saw the Radiolab address until today when both were in the mailbox at the same time

Also, can anyone tell me how USPS is routinely 2 days faster than UPS for shipping from NYC?

ancient kindle
#

Do you guys think those chips (2 silver colored at the right) could be removed with just hot air and possibly preheat? Or should I look in to a BGA rework station

#

Maybe one of those reflow ovens could work, manually setting the temp to over the melting point of that solder and just picking the chips up

quartz wren

late fulcrum

ancient kindle

That IHS is probably gonna absorb a lot of the hot air

The security was super creative, they jammed an ARM core in the middle of the CPU die

late fulcrum

It's not a monster like the Cell/BBE, but with some clever coding to keep all those execution units busy, it could crank pretty hard.

ancient kindle
#

But yeah basically I want to yoink those chips from that PCB and put them on a new PCB that I design

How do I make a magnet change the magnetic field without moving the magnet?

crystal ore
#

A permanent magnet or an electromagnet?

quartz wren
#

with a permanent magnet...well you can get cylindrical magnets with the poles aligned along the width, and you still have to move it to change the polarity (but the profile remains consistent as the magnet rotates) but with an electromagnet you can flip it around 180 degrees by reversing the current

crystal ore
#

Yeah, sorry, the magnetic field of a permanent magnet is more or less... permanent. So you can't easily change it except by moving it around.

quartz wren

you can get rid of it entirely by letting it reach its curie temperature without a strong magnetic field nearby and holding it there for a while πŸ˜‰

Then all of our energy problems are solved

#

Bohr's professor told him that physics wouldn't evolve anymore because everything that has to be discovered was discovered with Newtonian physics...

#

Then it came Modern Physics...

#

That had different equations than Newtonian physics to describe sometimes the same Natural Phenomenon...

#

Sometimes Newtonian physics didn't work for very small things for example...

#

My point is, I won't relly on what already exist πŸ™ƒ

#

For example, guys... In high school chemistry...

#

Remember that there are chemical reactions that occur right to left and at the same time left to right?

#

Where this infinity energy come from?

#

The same could occur with magnets...!

late fulcrum
#

Yes, lots of reactions work like that. There are similar quantum effects too. Some good experiments even show that particles and antiparticles spontaneously appear, and then annihilate each other. A few people have posited that if there were a way to to separate them before they disappeared, that could be harnessed as an energy source. Some very smart people have tried to figure out a practical way to do so, but while there have been some interesting papers, there haven't been any verifiable demonstrations that I know of. One of the approaches required a black hole, and harvesting the particles that got split by the event horizon: I don't expect to see that one turn into a commercial product!

ancient kindle
#

You mean I can’t have a personal black hole for power generation???????

#

:(

late fulcrum
#

I didn't say that!

#

Although the microscopic black holes that played some plot points in James Hogan's "Giants Star" novels did have some repercussions: the houses containing them had massive foundations to support their weight against earth's gravity.

#

The other microscopic black holes that turned up in "Thrice Upon a Time" had other effects, as they orbited the earth's core, drilling tiny holes through whatever they passed through. 😬

#

One of the scientists investigating the damage was asked "what could cause this", and said he didn't know, but "something like an armor-plated bacterium with a rocket engine?"

#

To learn calculus I had to jump and buy calculus book in high school

#

I taught myself trig to write a program lol

#

I was learning about converting between polar and Cartesian coordinates for simple gravitational simulation on particles

#

Then I learned it again at Full Sail because they wouldn't let me test out of it and was required to take precalc because it was "remedial" and isn't accredited (same for Calc) when in the art degree programs, high school geometry is considered college level and is accredited...

#

Wouldn't want them art students to feel bad now would you? But we don't care about how the tech students feel... Tech students went into that field for the pain of it as far as administration is concerned

#

I tried to transfer my math credits from full sail... I was told that in the tech programs, only linear algebra and above transfers

#

(didn't make it that far because group projects; the bane of a good solo worker)

#

Learning something for a specific purpose is my favorite way to learn

quartz wren
#

It's how it sticks for me, otherwise it's some ethereal pattern that I didn't quite make the application connection for

#

Taught myself boolean algebra because it made logic design easier to know the math behind it

#

I honestly just wish I wasn't lied to and coerced into debt with a curriculum that's intentionally designed to weed out not the people who can't do it but the people who don't play nice with others. If they had been honest and said that group projects were the thing messing up most students' grades I never would have gone. They also told me there would be no prerequisites which didn't apply to my field. They straight up lied.

#

The "digital literacy" class they force you to take and do a group project in that's most of your grade is like if you took a high school tech class, got rid of the making a web page curriculum, and mashed it with the first page of every programming book ever

This professor told a lot of jokes in class

#

And the students didn't laught at all

#

I felt so much shame even that it was in the past and I'm in a country >1000km away...

It was so many constant jokes and the students only didn't laught.

#

late fulcrum
#

What's the model number for a flying trash can?

jovial path
#

I don't know about the plastic but the flying part I built all with Adafruit's components... There's an Arduino controlling the helices so it will keep stable on every axis, there's an acelerometer (a very cheap one) mantaining track of everything, so everything the microcontroller does is to direct power to the right motor.

#

If you punch it , it will automatically come back to the original position.

#

Maybe in the future I'll install some cameras in the room so if the trash accidentally go out of the trash can it will take the trash before it touches the ground.

Preference question for microcontrollers, if you have to choose one of the two: mini B or micro B?

crystal ore
#

Micro.

lone dagger
#

micro for me as well

delicate stream
#

Personally I prefer mini because it's easier to tell which way it plugs in and can be easier to plug in

lone dagger
#

I can see that

delicate stream
#

Type C is my absolute favorite tho, since you don't need to worry about direction, but it can be a bit tight sometimes...

grave crest
#

Depends on how well it's made -- most Mini-B connectors on consumer devices are through-hole soldered joints, but just the opposite for Micro-B...they're surface mount and don't last nearly as long under normal use.

#

There are exceptions to both of these, of course. But it's so frustrating when you buy a USB-powered ethernet switch, and the micro-usb port literally falls off upon the first time you plug in the cable.

#

[it was unusually dual-powered -- you could use either mini-b or micro-b. Upon investigating, it was a through-hole vs surface mount.]

delicate stream
#

I've certainly had a lot more micro breaks than mini, and that's part of it too for me. I have had some SMD mini ports pop off the board too -- but micro is almost always SMD, and I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone, say, knock a device off a table and have not only the port be broken free, but also take a good chunk of traces with it... not pretty

#

Thankfully C seems to be more robust in that way -- despite the fact that I've never seen a thru-hole C connector, I also haven't seen nearly as many of them get broken [the side pads seem to be much more sturdy, or there's a cutout in the board and it has wings that take the brunt of fall damage and can just be bent back into shape]

jovial path
delicate stream
#

The ubiquity of micro up to this point certainly does make finding cables easier... And I can imagine if you live somewhere that didn't get a lot of them and now they're expensive, that's all the more reason to avoid them

jovial path
#

One day I had to order a single mini B cable from a local store and I had to wait to come to my home.

#

I do not need to do this with micro b, ever.

delicate stream
#

I guess the fact I already had a few hundred mini cables helped me like them more, lol

jovial path
#

lol

#

I never saw someone like you in my whole life, more mini B's than micro B's that's insane.

delicate stream
#

I totally have more micros than minis XD

#

I just have..... so many cables

#

I still have like 50 VGA cables, and that's after giving loads away!

#

This is what happens when you work IT.... you collect

jovial path
#

My father is just like you.

#

He just don't throw cables, electrinics, etc... away...

#

He just keep it, for years and years...

delicate stream
#

It's a waste to throw good ones in the trash... and when you get rid of all of them, THAT is when you ABSOLUTELY NEED THEM.

#

But it is good to pair down... I'd probably only keep like 10 VGA cables if I could find homes for the rest

#

I think I only have like 12 VGA displays at this point, and they all have cables, and those don't die often, lol

jovial path
delicate stream
#

Sometimes you use them for other uses, too -- like, I have a TONNE of old POTS phone cables, and I recently used one to hook a NeoPixel ring to a Pico, lol

#

I use scrap CAT5/6 cable as breadboard jumper cables, lol

delicate stream
#

Hmm... is it some sort of weird capacitor? I think I've seen ICs that were actually 2+ capacitors [for... reasons?]

ancient kindle
#

Idk, it doesn’t look like a capacitor array

#

There are some resistor arrays at the top of the pic

delicate stream
#

hmmm

#

Regulator?

ancient kindle
#

I don’t think so, there’s a massive power section on the rest of the board

delicate stream
#

I have no idea what the heck all that is doing, but probs power regulation in that area?

ancient kindle
#

They make an entire buck converter circuit for 1v 1.5v 3.3v and I think 5v

delicate stream
#

CPUs/GPUs do tend to have additional smoothing caps, so I wouldn't be entirely surprised if there's even more power regulation on some devices

#

Guessing you can't find a datasheet or specsheet for the board?

#

Wait, is that a Wii?

ancient kindle

Yeah, you can do multi GPU, but for gaming it's generally considered a dumb idea, as most games don't support SLI [which is what enables 2 GPUs to work together for a game], so there's no point in having 2

#

But 2 of my 3 workstations have 2 cards so I can do bigger projects, because some software can use however many random GPUs are in the system

static flare
#

Ah yes I need 12 monitors on one PC

delicate stream
#

But even in SLI supported games, the gains aren't generally worth it -- 1.5-1.8x for some titles with 2 cards, and usually you can just get the next card up for less than 1.5x the price

#

I currently have 6 monitors on my old main, lol... gonna go to 8 on this one

#

But I probably will just get a Quadro P620 for moar monitors

static flare
#

I want more than the 4 I currently have

delicate stream
#

More is good

#

But also high resolution good... I'm sitting in front of a 4K 55" TV and it's lovely, like having 4 monitors with no bezels

#

Although it's temporary

jovial path
#

I think 1080 is so good.

#

But if you look at the time, it's a bit old.

delicate stream
#

1080p is fine for 1 or 2 things... can't fit so much

#

This is why I have 6 monitors

jovial path
#

But I still think it's high definition.

delicate stream
#

1080p is FHD, 720p is HD

#

1440p is QHD, 2160p/4K is UHD

jovial path
#

Yep... Full HD

delicate stream
#

Resolution only makes a difference depending on what you're doing -- like, for work, I want as much on screen as possible, so higher resolution lets me fit more

jovial path
#

For me, it's good.

#

But it's only saving me from the work of oppening a new window...

#

It's like <2s

#

Ok... Sometimes you need to have two windows oppened...

#

That is true...

delicate stream
#

I need to see multiple things at once XD like the phone, call list, team chat, ticket window, user's machine, etc

jovial path
#

Or even more...

jovial path
#

They send you the archive to render.

#

You render in your computer

#

Then send the result to Pixar

#

You could earn money with this.

#

Sorry, bad joke....

#

You really can't do this... 😩

delicate stream
#

Lmao, Pixar has a bit more processing power than I do...

#

They probably have workstations with the 3990WX and 256GB of RAM, dual/triple/quad Quadro or Radeon WX cards, etc

jovial path
#

Ok. Time to go, I have to watch The Walking Dead otherwise my brain will explode of so much engineering.

Lol, have fun. I really need to catch up, I am WAY behind on TWD

Too many shows, not enough time

Nope. I thought it was a graphics driver for a while -- might still be, might be both. I blame Intel

Fortunately, there are many modern alternatives to the long-obsolete X86 chips.

delicate stream
#

Pretty sure it's the memory controller

static flare

I unironically love the look of the fail message

delicate stream

I still need x86 for Windows, lol... My 5950X is smooth

Very 80s

Happily, I don't need windows either, with all its nutty quirks.

delicate stream
#

I think MacOS is the one with nutty quirks XD

late fulcrum
#

I've been using BSD since the early 1980s so I'm used to its quirks and prefer it to AT&T style Unix.

#

Happily, Unix has outgrown some of its worst decisions (EINTR? please) over the years

delicate stream
#

I played with FreeBSD once...

#

Unrelated: Windows at 4K 100% scaling on a 14" screen is completely unusable

#

But on a 55" TV it's like 4x 1080p 27" monitors with no bezels :D

late fulcrum
#

Alas, my 50" TV is only 1366x768

delicate stream
#

Oof

#

2007?

late fulcrum
#

Yeah, it's a really old plasma screen. It got zapped in a recent lightning storm, I'm going to make one attempt to repair it, and if that fails, I'll get a modern unit (probably skipping straight over LCDs to OLED)

#

It turns out the power supply has a whopping 53 electrolytic capacitors (some hiding inconveniently under the heatsinks)

delicate stream
#

Omai

late fulcrum
#

I was able to obtain the service manual, which has schematics for all the logic boards, but alas, as usual, not for the power supply (which is presumably bought in)

delicate stream
#

You're certainly in for a treat if you get a new TV, even cheap ones are pretty amazing compared to the top end from that era

late fulcrum
#

Only having 2 HDMI inputs has been frustrating me for a while, and software updates for some STBs have broken compatibility with the set's older HDCP implementation. I have repaired this set twice before.

#

If I feel like watching TV, my choices are the 22" LCD in the bedroom, or the 30" cinema display on my computer desk.

delicate stream
#

Inputs... Definitely a higher end tend to have more, this one only has 2

static flare
#

i don't know how many inputs my tv has, i currently use none of them

delicate stream
#

O-O

late fulcrum
#

Direct drive to the CRT grids???

delicate stream
#

The living room TV has 4

static flare
late fulcrum
#

I figure if you're not using the set's inputs, perhaps you're just using the set as a CRT power supply and direct driving the tube.

static flare
#

oh! no! I'm not talking about my CRTs

delicate stream
#

Lol

static flare
#

I'm absolutely using my CRTs inputs

late fulcrum
#

Looking at last year's models, I can get a bigger screen, 4k resolution, and more inputs, for less than I paid for the plasma.

static flare
#

I have a LCD TV I just... don't use

late fulcrum
#

There are creative things you can do with unneeded LCD panels. Magic mirrors are popular

static flare

Oh, no, not gonna dismantle this

late fulcrum
#

That would be a lorj magic mirror

static flare
#

i already own a high end projector

delicate stream
#

LMAO, I meant unneeded LCDs

static flare
#

it was a gift from my fiancee's dad, he got it free from where he works, it cost about $1.5k new

late fulcrum
#

I bought a broken fancy laser projector with the intention of taking it apart for the lasers. But, ironically, it showed up fully operational.

static flare
#

It's only been used like... a few months in total, and it's like 10 years old

#

it's gonna last me forever at this rate

#

(i never use it myself)

late fulcrum
#

I did find a projection TV by the side of the road, and stripped the CRTs and optics out of it.
