essentally, all nuclear places
yeah. and till we ensure that, or theres far safer waste type nuclear plants, im not for it
This is worth reading: https://ourworldindata.org/safest-sources-of-energy
I believe that is ethanol.
Not a big fan of wood burning but you're right, that's a biomass.
I'm a biomass!
- Ralph Wiggum (at least in my imagination)
My dad has a pellet stove (Adding to the biomass), its still burning something, but the whole point is to at least burn it as efficiently as possible, its at least cool
V(R2) seems to only depend on V(s), but... how?
The answer sheet says V(R2) = 36V, but that parallel current source makes me confused as to what’s actually happening in the circuit?
The current source is forcing 1mA through R2.
it's easier to think of using superposition, where you look at the contribution of each source separately. calculate the voltage from v_s (with i_s replaced by an open circuit) and the voltage from i_s (with v_s replaced by a short circuit). sum for the answer
There now exists a bootloader following the multiboot2 standard for adafruit SAMD51 devices forked from the UF2 bootloader 😆 I will share soon but its the greatest thing you've never asked for
On top of the rest of the madness....
Dang, China is looking at banning rare earth metal exports
Yeah
US and Australia have the largest rare earth mining capabilities, but 4/5 of refineries are in China
They want to retaliate against the US
It's time we fixed that problem. Rare earths are required for national defense so we are just going to have to build up our capability.
Probably in the next administration.
It’s vital to green energy so it would hopefully make sense for Biden to support building up that capacity
One can hope anyway
They are interestingly colored colorants to glass and glazes and I've long wanted to mess with rare earth ceramic glazes. On the other hand, I've been avoiding the pottery studio because of coronavirus and glaze experiments can kill a kiln if you aren't careful so I'd have to negotiate that carefully.
@tardy badger Heaven forbid that he accidentally helps the military.
Right?
Question for a personal project - I have a boatload of MP3 audio recordings of conversations I've been asked if it's possible to transcribe automatically, just so there's a rough idea of the content of the recording.
Is there any free or one-time-purchase software anyone would recommend to accomplish this task? Like I mentioned, it doesn't have to be perfect -- just transcript that'd be referenced at a quick glance.
Pay-per-hour conversion services aren't ideal, as there are too many to reasonable do and the budget for this is thin.
@sterile walrus Thank you -- I'll check them out
Just do not use whatever voice recogniton software zoom uses - unless you want the calculus lecture look like that:
(intimacy was supposed to be "integral", the rest I can't even recognize)
I've heard of discreet math but that's a really something.
We used to leave Dragon Naturally Speaking running in our office in 2003 simply to check on it every so often to see how badly it mangled our conversations. 😄
I realised after typing it that it would not read the way it was supposed to.
Fixed, heh.
You know, it's always DNS.
DNS: Do Not Suspect
So i have this 3D printed robotic arm i made around 2 years ago. I found it in my closet and decided to power it up
The plastic on the motor mounts warped enough that when it started to move, it snapped off all the encoder shafts
Expensive mistake.....
We had to make practice problems for our peers in my circuits class
...I kinda got a lil' mean
Tbe best (but rather hard) circuit problem i know is finding resistance between two adjacent nodes of infinite square grid where each exge has resistance 1 Ohm
I losta bid for industrial robotic arm, and instead of staying bitter about it, i ended up building one myself
Pic from my HVAC system that smelled "burny" last night. Got it open today, and saw this. I'm not an EE or ME, but I think I can safely say that the voice of Adam Savage in my head that said "Well THERE'S your problem!" isn't wrong
tbh, solving DC circuits is way easier than I thought it'd be
as I understand it, there's 5 basic "sources of equations" (KCL, KVL, ohm's, Thevenin, maybe superposition?)
and the goal is "X equations, X unknowns", at which point matrices do the rest
(inb4 I get humbled HARSHLY by the next midterm)
@limber jackal just buy some of this and it’ll do the trick.
Don’t forget linearity 🙂
Happy to discover this a couple of years ago while holidaying with friends. It’s a hotel now but still an amazing old house.
Wouldn't you believe it, my local hardware AND electronic stores are either out, or closed due to power. I guess now I need to call a wizard of smoke harnessing.
nice. only reason I dont make one is because i have no idea what to use it for lol
No no that black stuff is electrical tape... its fiiine
Aww man, is that where I left that roll? I swear, it's always the last place you don't think to look because you've never been there. Cats must have done that.
Lol. Lets do it.
https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2021/02/18/geforce-cmp/ see CMP for miners
Earlier we were talking about an updated Arduino IDE, looks like our wish is granted https://www.arduino.cc/pro/arduino-pro-ide
Omg yay
Coverage of Perseverance landing on Mars has begun, 90 mins to "7 minutes of terror"
Username checks out...
its almost in
Successful landing!
Amazing -- Well done JPL!!
Well, chute.
One of my colleagues after seeing this photo responded "Does the rule apply also to whoever is grading the exam?"
Do you guys reckon we'll lose our toes to evolution
I wouldn't think so...we need our toes for balancing on our feet when we walk...
and to find hard and/or sharp corners in the dark
and to get stubbed when you walk too fast and hit something
More space travel would probably select for the return of toes.
how about growing a shell around the toes ?
so basically a toenail that extends all around your toe?
Just remember that evolution only cares about reproductive success, not what would be handy for organisms to have. So if you want to get rid of toes, start a marketing campaign aimed at convincing people that big toes are unattractive and you should be ashamed if you date someone who has them.
...that would be quite a feet.
I initially started using vs code at work but then switched to vim lol
I’ve used vim a lot before, though I wanted to try out vs code since so many people hype about it
Wasn’t terribly impressed
what about Emacs?
we could start a flamewar: vi vs emacs
True
Wait, we're starting now?
Editing programs written on punch cards was much simpler -- just pull out the bad line and put in a new one. 😉
Until you dropped the deck.
There were some things you just did not do....
My grandmother loves to talk about how her heart dropped when that happened 😂
We used to draw a diagonal line across the deck-- made it easy to get them back in order.
There you go
Got harder if you had a program that was multiple boxes of cards, though....
Yeah she managed all financial applications in an insurance companies, they were not exactly printing hello world. Or fixing issues with Haskell
Do you jerry also talk about the good ol times before a compiler went and screwed up all your work? 😆
I did spend most of my career in assembly language, but I came to appreciate compilers...
to a point...
Sorry for a mildly graphic question. I wonder how it would feel to release a tendon
By rupturing it
Tendons aren't nervous, right? Would you just lose the ability to move in certain ways, without much pain?
You know, encasing food in epoxy seems to have really resin-ated with people.
It's like... the only cure is more cast food.
Did you create the universe first?
I would like one icing please!
wheres the sprinkles
In the cabinet
Just getting it set up to decorate tomorrow
Nice little 4 layer cake
you gonna do one of them fancy pastery socks too?
Yeah, it’s going to be a unicorn decorated cake for my daughter
cool. post a completed shot. i like to see some artwork
Will do, it won’t be fondant spectacular but it’ll be cute enough
Ill be making a different kind of icing
will be playing with a tig welder with a pyrex cup.. im interested to see how different it is to the ceramic ones
Interesting
man that looks kinda like the snow that layered in here over last weekend
ice, 5" snow, ice, 7" snow, ice
Hafta say, @tardy badger that one really takes the cake
To those who have got their bachelor's degree, can anyone share their experiences of doing their final project?
ground, Vcc, and two signal layers?
and maybe some cream-filled vias
Mine was a while ago, but the project involved calculating electric fields around DNA molecules. A professor at my university had some some analytical models and crappy Mathematica code, so I optimized the heck out of that and built a 3D visualization engine for the calculated data.
dayum that's nice
any tips so that i wont fail mine?
Chances are, it's a long-term project, so it's a marathon, not a sprint. You need to be on a sane trajectory and making progress as you go, rather than planning to pull an all-nighter the day before it's due. That said, what constitutes "success" is often flexible, so if you are having trouble, talk to your advisor and see if you can redefine the scope of work into something you can actually finish.
Not amazing but it’ll do 🙂
birthday gift?
Not amazing
Strongly disagree! Well done. If I were a 4 year old girl, I would be THRILLED
Except maybe if that weren't my name on the cake, then... betrayal!
As for the gift? See the beaters back there with icing still on them? "Here, these are yours, have a lick. Go nuts! Happy birthday!"
😂
I had some left over icing that I squeezed from the icing bag into the kids mouths
Cake for my daughters party today. Mostly for grandparents
One time I made a friend a really complicated pastry and saved the beaters and bowl for when she came over so she could lick them. We're all absolutely adults, I can assure you.
good launch and lift off
Where? What? Did I miss one?
nasa just launch
Northrop Grumman Cargo Launch to the Space Station from NASA Wallops
And topped
Can see the unicorn-ness in the cake
Haha, that looks awesome, I agree with Hugo, if I were a 4 year old girl I would be thrilled, I have a truck load of younger sisters for siblings and some today way older than four would probably melt
Let's just hope it doesn't end up like this: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/10/god-of-cake.html
my mom knew that it was extremely important to keep the cake away from me because she knew that if I was allowed even a tiny amount of sugar, not only would I become intensely hyperactive, but the entire scope of my existence would funnel down to the singular goal of obtaining and ingesting more sugar.
😆
Is this the missing episode of portal? Is the cake a lie?
Must say you missed your calling as a baker man that thing looks pretty fabulous. It might even take off and ram someone with that horn. Tell the kids to be careful lol
I just drank like 40 to 50 ounces of water
All at once
In retrospect...that was not a good idea
I don’t feel so good
Probably not a good idea to get to the point where you feel the need to drink that much water in one go to begin with if it can be avoided
Dont get water poisoning
Well, may have already happened 😆
Hah
@spice moss wow. An orbital launch from Wallops is unusual.
If you aren't expecting it, it's a real Wallops.
Hello what is the general theme here
Be as off topic of off topic as possible
#welcome covers it well
Says what I "shouldn't" say, doesn't say what I should say 😏
Welcome to the Adafruit Discord server, a 24/7/365 worldwide online space, dedicated to sharing, learning, discussing electronics, programming and more!
If you read the bit at the top
Right, but that's for the other channels. The title here is "off topic" which suggests that it might include conversations other than "sharing, learning, discussing electronics, programming" and leaning towards the "and more" part of it.
I just wanted to ask what folks usually talk about on this specific channel. That's all. It's better to ask than read past conversations and assume.
Just when I thought I'd done something clever, somebody drops a million lines of code on Mars...
So can I now say "Hit me like a tonne of code"?
lol
@twin pier The topics in this channel have been widely varied and it is pretty open. That said, the overall rules about use of language and offering constructive comments still apply. Keep in mind that the audience may be of any age and are generally people interested in "making" and other areas of technology.
@twin pier It's a standard kind of thing; arrive in a new place and observe the customs and courtesies there.
People don't really have a litany to recite about that. ;)
Is the other person kind of out of bounds? Yeah, sometimes.
The only thing I find annoying is pasting in stuff that's like 'all sponge bob' and has zero to do with buying and using microelectronics for anything at all on any level at all.
my friends know me too well, they got me a 6502 for my birthday!
Mine would say I thought you said 5620 and I couldn't find one.
Happy birthday @zealous ermine, be it early, late or today! 🙂
Thank you!!
I'm a little disturbed that this listing doesn't specify what kinds of gates these are.
No bill gates I see
But there are bills for every gate
Yay honors designation
Big achievement for me since I’m not a very good school kid lol
:)
Very nice @tardy badger! Congrats!!! 🙂
Thanks! 🙂
Congratulations man. I can say i hated school and did poor with my grades but college is a whole different ballgame.
Try looking a little further in the data sheet. The info is there.
The information is indeed present further on, but it seems odd to omit it in that table.
Yeah
I was homeschooled and bookwork is definitely not my strong suit unless i have something to apply it to... like algebra was the worst for me until i got into circutry then i had something to apply it to
Yeah, I did better when I could build stuff and see it in action
Always did better in labs than actual course work
Yup thats why the apprenticeship is working really well for me
So far i got a 4.0
We shall see what next year brings tho cuz fourth year is the hardest
My grade point in under grad was horrible because I preferred working I logged 70 hours at work one week.
somebody said the Mars do is live or was recently
Most of the time I was doing 16+ credits
for anyone interested -- Mars stuff https://www.youtube.com/embed/4czjS9h4Fpg?rel=0
Arguably, neither could I. But EE from GA Tech with no debt.
Yeah, I’ve got a stupid amount of debt... but I was also taking care of my wife and two kids
Consumer credit is predatory .. about 6 to 7 APR used to be about right. I don't go near it anymore - no optional bills like that where it's open ended, to pay, each month. Instead, I 'make purchases' and those are finite and on my timetable.
When I want to borrow money, I borrow it from .. myself. ;)
Glossing over the fact "Federal student loans" are not actually given by the government, rather a private company, no conflict of interest there
"Predatory" doesnt begin to cover this
;) Yeah it took me a while to sort through it and just stop using credit that way.
My friend would differentiate between secured and unsecured credit.
Secured meant there was a house or a car they could attach if you were late on payment.
asset vs liability also.
It's not hard but we were not born with this knowledge. Must be voluntarily made a priority for it to succeed well.
Yeah, but very few of my class mates knew even how to write a check since financial classes were cut due to funding, yet all of them were walked through by teachers applying for debt for college with a company, thinking its the government, Im just saying if you were to make a system to screw all the people at the bottom and make the most money, this is it.
financial classes were cut due to funding
ughhhhhh
What a sentence
lol
I don't know what to tell you - my parents grew up during the great depression, so they were pinch pennies their entire lives.
I had the sense to call my Dad when a life insurance salesman had just sold me insurance I didn't need.
So I got out of that contract, easily.
In that same area of time right after they also inherited the largest uplift to a economy in modern history, the highest record of social welfare, the creation of programs to increase ones ability to be more productive in the national economy, government provided loans for their kids at low rates, etcetcetc. Im not saying the great depression wasnt terrible, and the good ol days were great, but I think we're in a lot more trouble then people realize
I can't tell because I'm used to how it once was - I don't trust what I see coming down the pike. Doesn't mean I'm right .. but it does mean: I don't trust it. ;)
My judgement is way off for the duration of you-know-what, anyway.
World's become a fiction.
If you wrote a book, it would be a bad book, it would be unbelievable
I'm sure it's cyclical. They had enough of it; they did things to change it. Then it went away.
Then they went to sleep.
It’s getting irritating looking at TVs and trying to find ones that are not Smart TVs
I want a dumb TV
Lol...
I don’t want TVs subsidized by invasive and manipulative advertisement schemes
Or ones that brick or become useless when the “smart” part of the TV goes into an unfixable boot and recovery loop
**end rant
or ones that send occasional frame hashes to track viewing habits
nevermind the really poor state those OSes are in, I could mess with my neighbor's TV bad if I had an itch to
@tardy badger I think a better term (I've done this same thing over several decades) is to look for a "monitor". I've been stuck with a bunch of old tube TVs permanently set to channel 3.
It’s almost ridiculous the extent you have to go to to not be tracked by your TV
I'm annoyed that this one Tyizen based tv announces it's hostname as "localhost"....
Non ad tracking TVs are for the rich, the poor must give up their privacy to own a TV
Tyzen, I’ve not heard of that brand
its an os that ?samsung made
I try not to either
I just know I don’t want a smart TV
I like my Apple TV far too much to indulge a smart TV
I like my sanity far too much to get anything with the word smart in it
Though it seems that it might be impossible to find anything non-smart in my budget
Most of what I see non-smart is well over $1500
it would break TOS here to explain what I'd do if Alexa were a tangible being
Yeah, I have an old private beta Alexa. Once she’s dead I’m not getting another
actually, the hysterical passenger scene of Airplane covers it
If Alexa were a tangible being, I believe she would have at some point responded "NOPE" to her... benefactors?
"I'm sorry Dave". Seems like more of a "Sorry, not sorry"
Yeah
For the "smart" TVs, it would be nice if the smart were completely bypassable. As in, leave it off (never connect) the network, no need to "update firmware" because it just works (tm)
Yeah, unfortunately lower income earners tend to be impulsive buyers who can easily be manipulated into horrible “life enhancing” products they don’t actually need. So smart TVs are dominant
hmmm, suddenly trying to fit it into a supernatural apocalypse story line
Lol
"...so thats why your microwave has a hulu button?"
Too late "Alexa, start the coffee maker and microwave"
Because there are actually Alexa connected ones of those
wait, can't "smart" TVs work without connecting to the network ?
yeah, and there is no "clear timer" command I can find for the alexa microwave... 🔥
smart tvs can generally work that way, but someone will usually find an excuse to feed it your wifi credentials anyway
and that doesn't make their awful interfaces any snappier or load any faster
displaybot: your purpose is to decode and render HDMI input, thats all!
I'll leave before I start ranting about anything with more than 2 moving parts :-)
Definitely wouldn’t want you running around with three moving parts... you must run with your arms stiffly stuck to your sides
And as far as tracking your being tracked at all times with your hand sized pocket computer
To regain privacy, I'd suppose you'd just have to walk away from all networked computers.
They still probably track your tennis shoes when you walk into the supermarket. ;)
Semi-related -- our local utility company offered a Google Nest thermostat on a super rebate sale (like $10).
My landlord was saying I should get it to replace the generic Mid-00s digital thermostat. Pretty much, adding value to his apartment on my dime.
I was 100% adamant that I will never connect part of my utilities to the internet willingly.
Passive monitoring, sure. Actively being able to change settings? That's a big nope from me.
I think they want to be able to do 'rolling blackouts with your participation'.
(or brownouts I suppose)
In exchange they lower your costs (beyond that of the electricity you didn't have access to make use of. ;)
I just had a passion fruit for the first time. That is absolutely delicious
I have not had the passion to try one. ;)
;-;
The texture is likely an acquired taste. As a Colombian, I grew up with slightly odd textures
Passion fruit is slimy, so just know that
I miss a juice from Ecuador -- a fruit called naranjilla.
Outside of the fruit has tiny little hair-like barbs, so you need to handle it with gloves -- or else you'll feel quite itchy for a spell. But it tastes so great.
Like a cross between lemon and pineapple, slightly foamy after blending it. Greenish colored. So refreshing.
Those fruit descriptions remind me of the Golden Kiwi that have been in and out of my local Costco for a bit.
But also, one I'd really like to try, and I swear I'm not crazy (in my personal opinion backed by nobody), is durian. The "I'm not crazy" part applies to me preparing it!
Has there been a series of accusations of craziness, based on fruit consumption patterns, in behavior .. as of late?
They'll be like, "Nah. That was a blowfish."
Craziness based on fruit consumption? That's bananas. Anywho, olive y'all alone and research how bees turn nectarine to honey.
Honey, please pass me the insect secretions jar.
Secretions? Eewwwww, that's nasty! I thought honey was insect regurgitation, much more... palettable?
Most microorganisms do not grow in honey, so sealed honey does not spoil, even after thousands of years.
Lab results just came in!
Why in the world can’t microorganisms live in that
Some questions are best left unanswered, or unasked!
Seriously, if true it'spretty interesting.
I knew a skid row kind of guy who figured that mayonaisse worked kind of the same way. ;)
I never tested his idea
I have heard that about honey, but if that's the case though, why on earth does mine crystallize to the point of being nearly unusable, after just a few months?
'sealed' maybe.
How did Egypt seal honey, though
(wax, hot pour?)
There's a name for canning that involves its temperature and environment.
retort might be the word
Is your honey from the supermarket or a local bee keeper?
Bit of column A, bit of column B
I get this honey: https://www.naturenates.com/ from Costco
With natural vitamins and enzymes, Nature Nate's Raw & Unfiltered Honey is 100% pure, delicious honey. Ditch processed sugar and go honey.
I highly doubt its pure raw if it crystallizes
Often they will add sugar water to make it go further and thats what your seeing
not true, have you seen what they do for long term honey storage?
they crystalize it in drums 🙂
regardless what you think, honey is still a sugar molecule which means it can crystalize, even farm fresh.
Then im not sure how the stuff i had didnt crystalize for over a year
Straight from a beekeeper
If you heat it removes the crystals tho. At least in my experience
My crystallized honey never looked like that lol it looked more like them rock candies
environmental factors influence how it crystalizes 🙂
Ahh mine also never said pure honey on it... thats partly why I figured it wasn’t pure anyways. Also had a farmer tell me that they add sugar alot of times to make it go further
some brands do
but adding sugar doesn't necessarily make it not honey. Honey is sucrose and fructose, so adding more sucrose doesn't hurt. sometimes it helps bring prices down for the average consumer
I don’t really notice a difference
it also helps during times where honey production is affected by local climate abnormalities
Yeah i get that
one funny thing about honey that my little brother gets heated about. most honey bees in the US are not native to the US.
most native honey bees to the US are extinct
wiped out by european varieties
happens with a lot of other species, too
yeah
you're not wrong
i've come to love Carpenter bees despite the fact they like to chew up wooden stuff
Spoiler if you haven’t watched the latest episode of WandaVision
I just have to say I am REALLY proud of my spelling Wandavision with reactions. I'll now take questions from the media.
😅😂
I don't even know what Vanda vision is...
me either
Wow, just spent two hours randomly trying to solve Sphinx docstring issues. It seems that everything needs to line up in the same columns, even waaaay across the document. I had one line at the top of my file and then a function definition way down below. Took me two hours to figure out that lining these two up mattered. Yikes.
@night crescent This might be nostalgic for Adafruit blog readers: Fry’s Electronics is shutting down. This SF Bay Area-based electronics chain was known for its oddly themed stores and indifferent customer service.
https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2021/2/24/22298616/frys-electronics-going-out-of-business
Wow. Not all that surprising given how I've seen the stores in my area the last few years, but still, RIP.
now i have to go to microcenter
(which is basically unthemed fry's in my opinion)
the themed ones
arewere cooler tho
Fixed that for you. Also, I bet they were
apparently in some bits of europe there still is a market for elcectronics stores
i didnt want to past tense it just yet. i needed to hold on.
Can't say that I blame you
wow themed ones heh never went to one like that
the music is great
but the name of the YouTube channel - AleksandrSolzhenicyn - makes me wonder... Solzhenitsyn was a famous Russian writer, winner of Nobel prize, but he died in 2008.. who named a Youtube classical music channel after him?
DARE MIGHTY THINGS 🙂
it's beautiful
In case there is any daring woodworkers in here. I found this in slashdot, and I'm trying to replicate it with 3% peroxide which is what I can get in CR without doing weird stuff.
https://www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks/scientists-develop-transparent-wood-that-is-stronger-and-lighter-than-glass-1.5902739
Memory boards have arrived!!!
I'm going to be testing them tomorrow. I followed all the datasheets timing info so it should work!
im really exited!
A cool feature i added is being able to create a custom memory map by flashing one of the EEPROMS. need more ram? gotcha. want to change the address of the IO ports? check
Pretty wild what people can do tho I doubt wood will last as long after having the colors stripped out of it
do people say Too-Pull or Tuh-Pull for Tuple?
@velvet pelican The idea is to then epoxy and layer it, pretty much like you would with fiberglass.
That is also part of what would make it transparent, where the wood and the epoxy should have the same reflective index, so light that passes through it, will travel in the same direction, just like it does on glass.
Hmm interesting. Ive heard epoxy for countertops doesnt last all that long not sure about other types
I say tuple
lol, helpful 😛
Yes, there is great variety in epoxy compounds, as well as the material that you use to make a composite. But most space stuff (let's say, spacex new huge fuel tanks) is made by building composite materials. It could be fiberglass, kevlar, carbon fiber, etc.
Interesting ive never looked that deep into that as ive never had a use for it thus far
Also, working with fiberglass or carbon fiber is a pain. Their weird, toxic, abrasive, etc. But having it with transparent wood, would just be a blast.
well I say it in french 😛
I keep feeling like it's almost, but not quite, like a sheet of epoxy.
in english I say it like couple I guess
(if anyone get's to replicate the experiment and end up with transparent wood, that is)
but, like, with a T
that's how I say it! But I've heard it both ways and was just curious
twople is popular too I think
@burnt tendon It's kinda like cement vs concrete. Just plain cement is quite brittle and useless. But with sand and aggregates it can become tough and last for 1k's of years.
With composites, it's quite important the grain of the fiber, how thick it is, what it's made off, and that ends up affecting the end product.
So, if it works it would be interesting not only for the cute optical properties, but also it's nice to experiment with the transparent wood to see what can be achieved.
Oh, and probably, way cheaper and carbon negative.
How is it more carbon negative if it's wood stripped off and then embedded in synthetic material
Is it because it's upcycled? Or because it lasts longer? Wood lasts pretty long
@twin pier If we compare it to concrete, it requires to burn minerals for quite a long time. If it's glass, it needs high temps to melt.
In the case of wood you are capturing carbon from the atmosphere and encasing it in epoxy should last quite a long time. I would like to replace the epoxy as well with something else, but one step at a time.
@sterile walrus Great to hear. If you or your colleges end up replicating any of it, please let me know how it ended. It sounds to good to be so easy to make.
And BTW, if someone wants to see a master of building with fiber glass, there's a couple of canoes that Xyla Foxlin has build this last year. One as a re-enforcement, and transparent one with neopixels.
@sterile walrus The people from the youtube channel "how to make everything", recently made something quite funny and it seemed to work just fine (against low velocity like 9mm) which was melting obsidian glass, when that happens it foams up, and then they used that weird glass foam to make a vest.
(maybe glass can be pressure extruded just like it's done for food with corn... insert here your local cheese-corn-puff product)
🙂
What sense does the phrase "I'm afraid not" make?
Like, yeah, we know what it means, but doesn't it actually mean "I'm not afraid"?
I'm afraid not
Instead of what we think it means, which is just "no", but fancy
I'm afraid it is not / does not
That's a lot of handwaving
I am afraid (for you) that you are wrong, because it is not
Well, hmmm. I guess that makes some more sense
I'm actually more so confused as to how "I am afraid you are wrong" makes sense, now that I think about it
How is that scary? It's weird to me
Does it mean, like, "I fear the possibility of you being wrong"
I believe it's used in situations where being wrong is a problem in general or for the person who is wrong
like
- "ah I have finished today's work"
- points at infinished work I'm afraid not
Right
there is a level of sarcasm in it
Yeah, I can smell it
in some cases
"I hoped I could avoid having to reformat my drive"
I think it can be totally not sarcastic at all though, in situations like that
but I guess there is in the way it's said
or "ah doctor Jones we have escaped the [bad guys]"
looks over his shoulder "I'm afraid not"
the more you say it, the weirder it sounds though
I fear you have it wrong
I'm afraid not
It's a fairly sharp contradiction

yeah that 👆
"I am troubled greatly by the worry that I have that you, my great good friend, may have erred beyond that of which I would otherwise have stood silent."
It may have started like that
It's an idiom.
the origin of idioms is sometimes more obscure than we can imagine
People imitate the tone, which is well understood.
Words mean what a person thought when they said them.
All human utterances are translations into a [putative] common language
usage wins over etymology
That's very much the case.
Also just to prevail.
Also use is based, in part, in speech opportunity.
There has to be enough time available to make use of a less brief utterance.
Could also be "I'm quite apprehensive to be making this (forthcoming) contradiction."
"Not!" << complete sentence
That one is fairly recent
I was thinking of the movie bad guy cliché too
"ah James we are finally free from the evil clutches of SPECTER"
reaveal bad guy with a cat on his lap
"I'm afraid not"
"I think not!" said Descartes .. who promptly disappeared.
What did you make?
the LiMC-4 computer has been finished!
@obtuse harness i build a custom 4-bit CPU from ttl and cmos ICs
Cool, how long did it take you?
4 ish years
wow that's so cool
Congrats again @zealous ermine. I can only imagine the feels after 4 years of effort, work, trial (and maybe error) to get where you are now. Especially after both your first prototype working as expected "out of the box" as well as your first run. I can only imagine what that might feel like, but you've earned it!
Satisfaction of the greatest extent. That only happens when a plan gets executed and everything works perfectly the first go... ive had days like that in plumbing
I learned all of Clair de Lune
About a year ago, through sheet music. I did forget it, since I stopped playing it
How do I explain it to my mom that you forget a song when you don’t play it for a while
Random question, is anyone else getting 403s on parts of Mouser's site, particularly on category pages? Seems like it's been doing this to me since last night: https://www.mouser.com/Semiconductors/Memory-ICs/SRAM/_/N-4bzpt
nope fine for me
Welp, guess Mouser hates me. I am denied my tasty ICs. I'll have to become a supervillain now.
I need a new sidekick gig, ping me
well, I dropped a screw while doing maintenance on my 3D printer and I can't find it
#mylife
I need to do electronics in a big (empty) tub so all the things I drop end up in the drain filter
I guess that means... you are screwed?
I have screw loose !

Answer the questions they do ask without steering back to the points you wanted to make.

off brand chocolate bars are such a gamble. Sometimes you find a new snack and sometimes you bite into a rectangle of sand
I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
like in between my heckin teeth
Also, artisinal hipster chocolate bars can sometimes taste like a rectangle of sand, but a bearded dude will sell you about how that's great.
With chocolate sometimes you need to temper your expectations
I'll stick to candy corn for assured goodness

Oh github/yaml. This still doesn't work (you can't call out a prerelease version of Python this way) but it also errored when I originally wrote - 3.10 because it tried to install python 3.1 instead 😠
are these version strings as floats ?
that reminds me that, while the USB description string of the Micro:Bit is BBC micro:bit CMSIS-DAP, the v2 of the Micro:Bit has "BBC micro:bit CMSIS-DAP" (the quotes are part of it)
micro:bit wasn't named by a programmer. Why would they consult a progr..
I finally found something I dislike about spyder. These seem backwards to me.
Yeah, TMux is the same by default. So frustrating
someone must do something
Fortunately, at least with TMux, it's a config you can override. I presume not so much with Spyder?
I have no idea tbh

Some assembly code I've been working on!
trying to get the 4-bit cpu to play some music
so far it only uses 9 words of RAM which is really good
Well, what could a more powerful processor do for you in space anyway? Communication throughput is the main bottleneck, they already take lots of photos they don't plan to transmit, just in case something fails stopping them from taking more, then they will send the extras, to try to pull more science out of them. More power means more energy use, smaller components in the chips and memory means more incidences of radiation/cosmic rays causing random bit flips. Then they are always going to be years behind the latest tech because it has to be proven reliable for years.
note that the helicopter it carries has much more powerful processor than the rover - because it is not mission-critical, so they decided to experiment a little...
I wonder if the latest and greatest in the SAM lineup has any interesting space applications: https://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/en/SAMRH71
SAMRH71 - Rad-Hard 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M7 Microcontroller
a stupid question - why not just put the processor in lead-lined case? wouldn't it protect from most radiation?
IIRC, Juno has the processor in a lead-lined case, plus it's rad hard, because Jupiter.
but for mars - i expect lead-lined case could be had much cheaper than $200K, so obviously there is a reason they didn't just do that
Not sure. I know that SpaceX uses non-rad-hard stuff, but there's a big difference between LEO and deep space.
probably weight
but again i'm no aerospace engineer
Yah, I was thinking that. Cost per pound to mars is expensive, even after it's been reduced.
yep
In the space race the Soviet program did the entirely practical thing and frequently put the inner workings in pressurized shielded capsules instead of making space-specific stuff.
That being said, the now-decommissioned space shuttles had air-cooled avionics racks.
woah
Mass and power are huge constraints for most space missions. As noted by @fathom relic many missions can get by with very limited processor capability. I worked on several science missions and the biggest limitation was getting the data to the ground. There is a major trade off in doing on-board processing versus getting raw data to the ground. If you process it "on board" you often can't recover the original data if you decide to look for something different. Our mission opted to use on-board algorithms to select the "best"data and send it. A lot of data is "boring" so we would only send the "good stuff".
can you tell what bands other wifi routers prefer around my apartment complex?
I'm going to go with... "default"?
Channel 11 seems to be highly utilized, but it chooses the band channel that is most free. I can't imagine what other channels look like.
I could run a scan of the local band utilization but that would turn wifi off here until it finished

Would something weird happen if our bodies were 100% energy efficient with our functions
I'd imagine no body heat increase when we exercise being one thing
we'd be dead by lack of heating 🙂
we depend on heating in order to keep at proper temperate
I have the setting to scan networks at 3AM to prevent that, which is a pretty cool feature
However, Im finding unifi disappointing 😕
I’m using the dream machine pro
Only issue I had was an update to an AP broke it being connectable so I had to do a manual update, then reset it and then re-adopt it
You know, I think that the problem with the SN10 flight is that cartoon physics were at play for a few moments
launch... fly... actually land for the first time... then at the local maximum of silliness when everybody's like "whoa, it landed. Gotta get my video out of the memory cards" blow up
But at the same time, "It's leaning! Do I keep recording in case it tips over???"
rocket fart......
I use an app called wifi analyzer on my phone to see what channel to pick for router. Letting the router select seems to work really poorly. Usually I find that half the neighbors are all on the same channel, most of the rest are spread between the other 2 useful ones, and someone with a strong signal picked a random one in between that overlaps one of the end channels and the middle one. Since with 2.4 ghz you only really want 1, 6, or 11 because of channel overlap. I find that routers seem to pick channels the same as one of the strongest neighbors signal for some reason, and manually picking a channel can solve problems.
“Your code score is 7.25.” Yes I know you deter camelcase and those 112 uses of ‘p’ as a variable name. Pylint, why can’t we just all get along?
apt uninstall pylint
Yeah, I did a spectrum analysis with the system and they are all pretty crowded here. Channel 11 seems to be less crowded.
now that daft punk is broken up I think you're primed to take over their share of the market
thanks!
i'm writing some firmware to turn it into a digital clock!
i want to hang it up on my wall above my desk
i'll share the assembly code if anyone wants to look at it
also if anyone wants to have a go at creating code, @ me and send me the files! i'll assemble it and take a video of it running

As I said in #help-with-circuitpython you can just chord all three buttons to access via dfu-util under Linux.
0xFF == 🐢 ?
It says 'turtle - click to learn more!'
unless there's a new board I haven't heard of, it seems like I'm seeing a few mistypes or likely autocorrects of MagTag to Maytag, whatever that is
@sonic prism Maytag is a well-known manufacturer of appliances (washing machines etc) in the USA.
They also manufacture refrigerators, which is why there's a photo of a refrigerator on the back of the board
Doh! I never noticed that!!
Google: "did you mean Maytag?" Meanwhile giving me Magtag results
the famous Adafruit Maytag Refrigerator (coming 2025)
probably the only appliance made with ethical labor
So, Ting's eForth runs unmodified on STM32F405 Express, Black Pill STM32F411 and also STM32F407 Discovery. Not bad for a .bin compiled from assembly language code. ;)
He chose PB6/PB7 for USART1 and they're present on all three boards.
(literally the same .bin with the same md5sum)
@dusty citrus do you have a link to the eForth Repository?
@ocean sigil I have a copy on my github - the SVFIG 'offete store' has the upstream.
http://forth.org/OffeteStore/OffeteStore.html
and
http://forth.org/OffeteStore/2165_stm32eForth720.zip
@dusty citrus Thank you! On my "todo" list....
@ocean sigil Just hook up CP2104 or similar to PB6/PB7 and ground! ;)
He has a TURNKEY word.
I loaded CircuitPython (obligatory) and then eForth on the board that arrived from Adafruit (today).
I found remnants in SRAM from CircuitPython, which means Ting did something to bring in all of flashROM space.
I have one arriving tomorrow!
i.e. when you go above the active eForth area in SRAM (0x20000000) you see old CircuitPython stuff which of course had to be copied in (or virtualized) by eForth itself.
did you add the Flash chip GD25Q16?
No.
When you image circuitpython.bin it creates a small filesystem.
I don't know if it's 'small' or what.
Looking forward to playing with it.
And the only one that would last more than a few years
@ocean sigil LED setup pushed to github for Black Pill eForth v7.2 ;)
Is schizophrenia just hallucination, or am I not understanding something
Schizophrenia is a complex mental health disorder with a spectrum of symptoms
hallucination is merely one of symptom of it. Like lews says. 🙂
Its more like an imaginary friend that you actually see which the actually seeing them is the hallucinating part
Sometimes if you meet someone with symptoms, the next time you meet them they'll have it resolved (for a while) and all is well.
Alright, folks, this conversation ends now. I'll be DMing each of you in turn, so it may be a minute. Nothing horrible - in general we don't allow political conversation.
In general, let's avoid making sweeping statements about people based on nationality or health. 💜

The Gardetto’s Special Request Garlic Rye Chips are so good
No need to buy regular Gardetto’s (though the Italian cheese flavor is my favorite)
Are these... bread chips? Hm, interesting. Not sure if I'd love them or hate them.
I've had bagel chips before, those are pretty yummy.
oooooo, I remember those! Well, back in the day, Sams Club had a mixture of those + other bits and pieces of various snack items in a big ol' plastic tub. And my faves were the brown rye chips!
[allright, the way I described that probably doesn't make it sound appetizing. but we always grabbed them when we went on vacation...such an excellent road snack while traveling]
When you said big ol' plastic tub all I could think of were the open containers they put nuts and produce and such in.
@dusty citrus first try with stm32f405 -- good start ```

@dusty citrus looking at your notes, it looks like you use picoterm to upload your .fs files with new FORTH words. Is that correct? Just curious.
@ocean sigil In my launch script it looks like this:
picocom -e \\ -f n -p n -d 8 -b 115200 --omap delbs,lfcr --send-cmd "ascii-xfr -s -l 50 -c 3" ${1}
The -l 50 is pacing by line and -c 3 is pacing by character - I adjust to local conditions depending on how reliable the target is, at processing input. ;)
Here's the full script I ran just last night:
You can adjust what word boots very easily, and have to TURNKEY the result. I usually boot a 'signon' word. ;) Must 0 ERASE_SECTOR (and I usually iterate to at least 1 ERASE_SECTOR up to 3 ERASE_SECTOR if I have a full house. Only then, TURNKEY.
I usually create lower case aliases for common stack manipulation words:
: dup DUP ; : drop DROP ; : swap SWAP ;
As long as you have a space (between definitions) you can define more than one colon definition word per line, out to the 84 character terminal input buffer limit.
Comments are bracketed by ( comment here in parens ) or also a leading backslash, iirc:
( this is a comment )
\ this also is a comment
: dup DUP ; \ this is a comment
I don't remember; I check existing work instead of remembering the rules. ;)
Last night's Black Pill code upload (with blink):
Basic TURNKEY:
\ ' signon 1 + 'BOOT ! 0 ERASE_SECTOR TURNKEY
(I keep that in a comment - and type it by hand for timing's sake.)
TURNKEY basically re-images flashROM from the live SRAM image, byte for byte - no changes anywhere.
So for example, Ting's DUMP word uses underscores for non-printables, but I like this better:
: newchar> 2E 900 ! ; \ location 900 has the underscore for the tochar word
\ upstream used 5F not 2E there.
\ >CHAR is that word and is stored near location 900 in RAM
That only changes the SRAM version; after a TURNKEY it's permanent throughout. ;)
@dusty citrus thank you for for all the info. Lots to learn!
;) You're very welcome!
Oh by the way, the VB pin on STM32F407 Discovery is tied to 3.3VDC so it's not VBUS.
When I (externally) power Black Pill STM32F411 I use one of its 5V pins from an USB upstream source (CP2104's 5V pin).
Thanks. I have to go offline for a few hours. Will get back to this later or tomorrow.
;)
Any of ya here use a safety razor for shaving?
I used to
I switched to electric as I've found it to be less messy
@velvet pelican Safety razor in the shower. Electric out of the shower. Don't get backwards.
What kind did ya use? I just got a replica of the gillette fatboy and man that blade angle adjustment is the best
@stone orbit ^ also same question
Errrrm I think it's a merkur knockoff
I started out with a vanderhagen
I still use merkur blades
It has a pretty tight blade gap so i was researching and found the one i just got with the adjustable blade gap... with my other one i could get a clean shave 2-3 passes but with this it only takes one pass
I tried a cheap shavette once, just once though. They are tough to use
I thought about trying a straight blade but a buddy advised against it due to possible personal injury
that was my painful experience. It was a very close shave though
Yeah i can imagine
it's why it's called a safety razor actually! You probs knew that
<@&327289013561982976>
What's up? I see no issues with a discussion on shaving methods.
Just doesn't seem appropriate to me.
offtopic
it's razors, it's guns .. a theme.
I'm happy to knock it off, I've said everything I can think of saying
what the?
Razors and guns are very different things, and the conversation also has a very different tone than the one last night. There's no insults, threats, or anything else that would be against the code of conduct. And, as mentioned, this is the offtopic channel so it's the appropriate place for such discussions.
I wasn't litigating. I thought it worth your looking at.
and nowhere did guns come in at all today
Conversation last night, don't worry about it
I know. thats why I said today. 🙂
Don't necessarily need to bring it up then, to be honest.
Even though it was taken as something not good last night in no way was anything i said last night meant to be offensive.
okay. didnt start with it today but yeah
We don't need to worry about last night's conversation. We can leave that at last night, it's been dealt with.
Im just letting nis know
Since he wasn’t in on what else was said to me personally
Be aware of how summoning the moderators can appear. If you have questions you're free to DM one of us - With the bonus of not looking like you're trying to do anything.
Yeah I'm not very nuanced with that. ;)
I'm happy to take a PM if I've said anything that bothers anyone, last thing I want to do
I did not expect a public conversation.
@proven olive (however, we have also said to mention the role, as you don't know who is actually active as a moderator at a particular moment.)
Also if you have any issues with anything i say dont be afraid to address me. I dont want to make anyone uneasy for any reason as thats not my style
Well now that we've completely derailed the conversation for y'all...
Meh 😂 it happens
discord is a stream of consciousness
Hey I probably just overstepped. I really can't tell.
So I think we can wrap this up with "Let people know if they're bothering you, you can always DM a mod if you have questions, and you can also ping us if you're not sure if any of us are around."
I don't know about the rest of you but I'm going to get myself a bowl of ice cream.
I already had dessert. It was a brownie
banana
hey hey law of realms, menion ice cream, must share with everyone
What kind?
Was that home made?
Depends on what's in the freezer.
Ahh lol whats your preference?
I wasn't asked, but Caramel/Vanilla
Oo there is a waffle cone kind that I enjoy
Could probably about eat the whole tub in a sitting so i have to not buy it very often
I have food allergies so for most of my life ice cream has been....untasty, but last 10 years or so it's gotten better and with the advent of oat milk ice cream it's heavenly
And the winner is: Chocolate/Peanut Butter. One of my favorites.
Depending on how much peanutbutter that can be pretty good
well, frozen sugar isn't UNtasty, but it's definitely improved
I've had coconut ice cream but not oat milk. Can you compare?
Yeah! Oat is better
oatmilk itself is meh, but oatmilk icecream (or at least one brand) is great
or Oatjuice to be more accurate 😛
Hm ill have to try it sometime if i see it
local health food store will have it
oat milk is supposed to be the most sustainable of the plant milks
I found coconute ice cream to be absurdly tough. A few times I'd microwave it a little bit to get it soft enough to eat
I feel like a shill for big oat, but oat milk icecream is real soft and creamy
Yeah depending on the brand that has been my experience too
Flavor was nice, but I also love coconut. But I don't want to have to break out a chisel and hammer to eat it
@velvet pelican no, it was from a local restaurant
I gave up on right out of the freezer. I put the ice cream in the refrigerator for a half an hour before I take a spoon to it. ;)
(too many bent spoons)
I have bent more than one spoon on hard ice cream. Always annoying
I finally bought a proper ice cream scoop at the supermarket - can really lean into it. ;)
speaking of the kitchen, I can't recommend a sous vide enough, if you have the room. I got one on sale and food has never been better.
you can also attach it to a pot if room is a concern and I get by without a vacuum sealer
I got one of those manual coffee grinders Hario Skerton I think it's called.
I'm too impatient
I wanted to find out personally what the deal was on grinding coffee by hand.
I need to pick up some ice cream from the store at some point
I get one ice cream delivery every 2 weeks with the groceries. That's 13 days without ice cream, on a regular schedule. ;)
In terms of dairy ice cream, Tillamook is definitely the brand that tastes the best overall for me
And surprisingly for a soft ice cream, their vanilla varieties doesn’t bother my lactose/milk allergies like other brands
Tillamook has some good products
I love there extra sharp cheddar
This has been on my list for a while
You will never want to grill a steak again, except maybe to sear after cooking it in the sous vide
Mushrooms are incredible
I imagine myself doing a nice sous vide duck curry
carrots are great too
I wouldn't mind one of those rotisserie chicken home cooking appliances ;)
dang I'm hungry
This tells me you are not a spontaneous ice cream guy lol
My brother solved most of their kitchen grease problem by cooking literally everything in a gas grill out on the porch.
They grill in winter with a foot of snow on the deck.
I found some nice rib eye the other day that I plan on cooking stove top
I’ve got a well seasoned cast iron skillet that does wonders
I want to say thats who makes the waffle cone i like. Tillamook is about 2 hours west of me
You live in a nice part of the world
Heh, there was a lot of nice ice cream to get in Seattle.
I kinda miss that. Atlanta's selection is no where near as awesome.
😂 alot of people say that till they move here and live through six months of rain. This year has been especially wet
I grew up there 😛
I have to have blue skies a significant number of days each year.
and not dark at 4PM in the winter?
;)
Yeah seasonal depression is a big thing here
yeah it was never the rain that got to me in Seattle, it was always the darkness
If I live somewhere where people report a UFO sighting and it turns out to be .. the Sun .. that's not good for me. ;)
it's oppressive. Coffee only helps so much
Beautiful in the summer though, hands down can't be beat IMO
Lol i live on coffee this time of year. The infant doesnt help with my sleep schedule either
I think people were nomads for a good reason. ;)
we just followed the geese
Now that i cant argue with. Also the fall is amazing
I go against the Gordon Ramsey grain with steak by doing more than just salt and pepper rubbed into the steak
I’ve tried so many brands and Tillamook just is a level above the rest
You would think it would be different with how un naturally hot and humid it is there in the summer. Or year round actually...
right?
is it all sweet tea? I know very little about the south.
We do have King of Pops, though. I love King of Pops.
Yeah sweet tea is a big thing
Yeah, aside from the terrible motives of Cookout owners, their milkshakes are pretty good
My sister lives in the southern portion of Alabama
First time I visited it was 99% humidity and 100 degrees
Felt like i needed to grow gills to breathe lol
Basically
The weird thing is around the military bases there, it gets so much hotter and humid
concrete. 🙂
I did Army basic training in Fort Benning and my lanta
Yeah concrete and asphalt are big heat generators
It was hotter in the hills around benning than in most every other part of the state of Georgia
Must be like a weather pocket
The standing joke was the government had figured out a way to control localized weather
hah, and make it more miserable?
tbh the most miserable place weather wise in Georgia is Savannah.
Yessss
In Oregon the weather pocket is in brookings. Always 60 degrees and cloudy
NC mountains are not too bad. But whatever you do don’t go to SC
SC is like... the armpit of satan
I lived there for almost a year and my wife is from there... way too hot
Im sure someone likes it tho
I live near where I was born, where my parents were born. I have lived elsewhere, but only about .. 5 to 7 years of my life.
Snow birds
I think people just like where they have lived a long time.
Yea, I miss SC
I’ve move most of my life
Florida, Wyoming, Tennessee, South & North Carolina, and now Utah
Wanting what you have instead of having what you want .. that's probably part of it. ;)
I was a military brat growing up so not much choice in the matter 🙂
But now as an adult, I have a difficult time living anywhere too long.
I adjusted my living location just 20 miles and about as many years, ago .. from the central low part of the state (on a flood plain) up to about 600 feet above that area, in hills and in forests.
utah is beautiful
i believe so
Mountain View’s from every window of my apartment
to go skiing?
I’m south of the salt lake valley
for a wedding, I can't ski
really good indian food there, was a bit out of the blue
but welcome
From my bedroom window
cant ski? bummer. still one of the best states for a good mix of werather terrane and vegitation
It's ok, there was good times had on the trip, good company and good food
and me typing one handed is aa wreck
Yeah I lived in Denver and never tired of seeing the mountains in the distance.
Utah is nice because it’s kind of well located for a lot of national parks and activities
now ya just need someone to move those other apartments out of the way lol
That glider guy Bruno is in Utah.
The longest I lived anywhere was Wyoming from 2004 —> 2015
whats the mountain pass right by denver?
lots of bear moose and wolves there @tardy badger ?
11k elevation
@velvet pelican Independence Pass is near Aspen .. not sure what the one is called outside of Boulder.
Yeah, it was great. Small oil/gas/tourist town
not moose lol elk*
There are moose though
If you head for the mountains from Denver, I think you usually go to Boulder to begin.
Granted they are technically invasive
never saw one when we went through... did see a couger tho
I used to see moose in my yard in the winter
Along with white tail deer and antelope on occasion
invasive moose sounds like kind of an urgent problem
yeah my buddies truck about had a heart attack when we roadtripped through that pass
This is Bruno's YouTube - lots of aerial shots from a glider in Utah.
https://www.youtube.com/user/bviv
They’re pretty well established. They were introduced by the government
spies
Canadian spies
so were the wolves werent they?
maybe
Nope
@velvet pelican Yeah we tried that area using a Ford Escort around oh 1987 or so. It was so hard on that little engine to make it up those long hills.
I'm thinking of another state then
Grey wolves introduced into Yellowstone technically were not from Yellowstone
Oh so it's different wolves but they were reintroducing wolves in general? It's been too long since I read about it
we about ran out of gas on Independence Pass so we turned around and coasted downhill, back to Aspen, to find gas at midnight. ;)
They are northern Rockies grey wolves which are much larger than what lived in the area before
oof was it an automatic or manual
Glad I didn’t do that in my moving truck on Monday
my mom grew up with a 3 on the tree that they took everywhere
automatic probaby would have toasted the transmission
We literally never bought automatic transmission vehicles if there was a reasonable option. ;)
same here lol
I wish they still sold manual on the lot
tho manual is becoming rare
manual >> auto except in traffic
Even newer “manuals” are starting to transform into CVT with manual shift points
Don’t get me wrong, CVT are super sweet on gas
Better power ratios on towing in general... but it definitely steals the driving experience
eventually I'll own an electric car and only then will I have an "automatic"
And I think the Corvair had a dashboard control for the gears.
i agree but disagree at the same time... manual in traffic keeps people focused but its alot more work
it's my "no one can borrow my car" insurance
my cj-5 is a three speed
Driving in SF in a manual is tough
driving in SF is tough period
yeah i rolled through there in a 5 speed toyota
Drifting a manual on a snow packed road is fun
was not a fun time
My Renault R-5 (branded 'LeCar`) only had three lug nuts per wheel.
ice cream - > transmissions. Conversation is weird
also went through there in my 5 speed jetta but it was at a time where there was no traffic
never stay on topic in offtopic
it's a mad land here
Oh good
I don’t think I’ll ever willingly go to SF
Not on personal business that is
ive seen so many interesting conversation in this channel and concepts. thats why its the main one i keep open
I love the smell of trash and gasoline
I enjoy cities, I’ve always been fascinated by sky scrapers
trasholine
But I loveeee the mountains
yeah i dont like crowding
The irony of me is I was born basically on the beach
I just want to live in a city and have room for goats, is that too much to ask? Oh it decidedly is? Ok
born and raised in the country near a city and thats where i am most comfortable
where I live now is decidedly not a city, and I miss it sometimes
Far enough to avoid the insanity
ah but the insanity is wonderful
never having to know anyone because almost everyone is a stranger!
I invented #general-chat
Haha
i like having connections
That's fair
Everyone is a stranger if you’re introverted enough
I like the anonymity of cities
you can be close with people if you want to be but nobody has to know you if you don't want them to
my anonymity is when i go snowboarding and just meet random people there
I like where I’m at currently. Just enough busy, and not too much city.
got that small town feel?
In a way
only thing i dontcare for in small towns is everyone knows everyones business
It’s kind of on the edge of town but 2 minutes from Walmart and Costco
that's what I can't handle
thats a prime position
I can quite literally see Costco from my window right with the Mountain Views haha
i mean it definatly makes people keep their nose clean if they are smart
Ah but I ain't smart
Lol
The secret to living well among people appears to be simple enough: learning their names and calling them by their name.
Very true
After a while people want to be one of the ones you know the name of. ;)
Mess up once in a small town and about 40 versions of what happened will get spoken to you in one week
mess up in a city and maybe it makes the blotter
Mess up a circuit and you release more magic into the world
yeah but by the next day someone else messes up in the city and the day before is forgotten
mess up in a method and you can return the wrong data
Or a compiler error
Compiler, we don't need no stinking compiler
Where we’re going, we don’t need compilers
runtime errors, everywhere
and blue screens
Ah, Apollo's computer rebooted several times during Armstrong's landing.
that sounds a bit scary
Indeed
yeah i need to move left... ohh wait gotta reboot
What’s funny is a TI-84 could land you on the moon
There's a YouTube series on those events I've been meaning to look into.
there seems to be youtube on everything these days
