Is everyone having issues with ups delivery delays? as in the package gets to out for delivery, but gets delayed a business day, out for delivery the next day, delayed again, repeat?
Seems to be happening locally to about half the packages I've seen tracking for for family and work. Often like 3 days delayed, record so far is 12 days, my sister's package was first out for delivery May 1st, and still hasn't arrived. /ups on reddit seems to imply it's widespread, but there's selection bias there.

#

theory on reddit is that their volume is at christmas levels right now, and trucks are being loaded with more packages than can possibly be delivered in one day. But what I see at work is packages out for delivery, a pile of packages get delivered, around 11-12 like normal but not the ones I'm waiting on, even though they were out for delivery.

red hull

oh no 😦 Mine was delayed to friday...

I've been programming in Arduino for a year or so now and really only do stuff for my chicken coop and therefore have everything I need on my computer and I perform backups to the cloud. Is there a reason I should switch to using GITHUB? If so, what are the best resources for learning the best ways to implement this moving forward? I'm about to jump into CircuitPython for my daugher's NeoPixel strings for her office. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Do you use a version control tool?

burnt tendon

Github over just plain git if you've got backups is I guess kinda marginal, although your local git state can get into a bad situation requiring you to hit a remote.

Thanks. @rain ferry do you have a recommendation on where I can get the best info to start learning how to use it?

rain ferry
#

latent arch
#

@sleek quarry if I go down the path of using the public git servers, would I be able to migrate everything easily over to my own server if I decide to implement that?

sleek quarry
#

git has become more accessible with GUI based systems
so no real need to use command line git that can be really confusing

#

they all use git inside, so you can use it on github, gitlab, bitbucket, or what ever

burnt tendon
#

Ugh, I've had really bad results with people using the GUI tools when I've had a population of non-git-users at work.

#

It's always been me thinking "Well, this shouldn't be hard and I don't want to make their lives miserable" and ends up with "OMG what did that GUI tool do to your Git repo?!?!" and I end up having to teach them the CLI.

#

However. Migrating git repos is easy.

latent arch
#

@sleek quarry what is the difference between GitLab and the Git Gui I already installed? (If you know) Is there an advantage of GitLab over github, bitbucket (never heard of that one) or others?

#

@burnt tendon if I'm the only one in it, would the repo still get all screwed up?

#

although, I might be adding my daughter into the mix at somepoint as well...

burnt tendon
#

Yah, so, git and other source control systems really shine when you are collaborating.

#

Basically, git stores stuff as a database on disk.

latent arch
#

ok

burnt tendon
#

It's a special-purpose thing and, at least in the past, occasionally weird things would happen and that database would get corrupted.

#

A mere backup of the files isn't going to save you there, but pulling a clone off of a different git repo will.

#

Now, probably this is a lot less likely today after a zillion people have been poking at Git, fixing bugs, etc.

latent arch
#

@burnt tendon do you have any recommendations on resources to learn git?

burnt tendon
#

I still find, even for things that only I work on, it's quite convenient to keep my things in git repos and sync them up to GitHub .

latent arch
#

so is a git repo something that's on my machine and then you sync it to github (cloud-esque location)?

burnt tendon
#

yah

#

That's probably a useful starting point.

latent arch
#

Very much appreciated!!!

burnt tendon
#

And GitHub is what the bulk of the open source world uses.

#

Except that a lot of people are increasingly unhappy with all of that power being centralized in a single Microsoft subsidiary and several of my favorite GitHubbers ran from the building screaming

latent arch
#

yeah, I've seen the links to Git, but always struggled with trying to download examples and such and trying to navigate. Time to learn!!!

#

mecrisp-stellaris(-RA) loads and runs on STM32F407 Discovery board.

#

The non-RA version gave sketchy results.

#

Since Adafruit uses a different crystal (8 MHz vs 12 MHz?) it doesn't quite work right on STM32F405 Express without modification, but I don't remember the details (it's been months since I tried to use mecrisp on the Adafruit target).

#

Same chip, same port pins (iirc) but different clock freq. which affects USART communication speed.

#

eForth runs on both targets, unaltered.
🔹

#

I know almost enough eForth now to modify for STM32F405 Express to move the USART back onto the 'correct' pins for that target.

#

From Ting's distributed file, you have to use the (silc-screened) SDA/SCL pair for TX/RX (may have that reversed) on the Adafruit target.

#

The Discovery board uses ST-LINK whereas Adafruit uses dfu-util and the other one. ST-LINK requires a 'helper' chip to host that program.

#

Still trying to figure out if I can use dfu-util on the Discovery board. I'm guessing I'd use a USART on the main chip (F407) to do so.

Can someone explain radiation to me in terms of why it doesn’t seem to reflect off of surfaces

#

Take the sun, for example, if I can see its light, then, clearly, the surface I’m seeing it on couldn’t absorb that wavelength, but my eyes could

#

But why can’t I feel heat from another direction, too?

#

Is it impossible to reflect or refract that radiation?

#

What in the world?

#

I guess I’m not suited to ask this question :/

crystal ore
#

Probably the main thing to realize is that the sun doesn't give off a lot of heat radiation directly... almost all of it is in higher wavelengths. So when you feel warm standing in the sun, it's because your skin is absorbing some of the light and converting it to heat. Similarly, any other illuminated object will absorb some light and become warm, but it will only radiate heat according to its own temperature, not the temperature of the sun.

dusty citrus
#

Woah, interesting

#

Would the sun be a whole lot more dangerous if it was more direct in that fashion?

#

Wait, speaking of danger... when you’re in the sun, the DNA polymerase in your skin’s cells slightly denatures, in the sense that it makes more mistakes while doing its job. So it makes mutated cells, and those cells just make more, and it really screws up your skin

#

But is it just because it’s a higher temperature than the protein is comfortable with, or is that more complicated?

crystal ore
#

I think the primary cancer cause is ultraviolet light, where the individual photons are high-energy enough to have some impact on the chemistry.

dusty citrus
#

Ultraviolet, huh

#

So, if that’s the cause of that heat, are you saying it would definitely be possible for a reflective surface to be fine enough to reject those wavelengths and heat things up in another direction?

crystal ore
#

Absolutely. If you set up a metal mirror next to a fireplace, for instance (without a glass cover), you can feel the heat in the reflection.

dusty citrus
#

That’s pretty cool

#

In asking that question, another, far more difficult one, dawned on me

#

I may be wrong to assume that I can see light because my eyes succeeded in absorbing it, and the energy agitated the system of sensors that told the brain to map the information

#

Or am I in the ballpark?

crystal ore
#

Yes, that's correct. Cells in your retina have chemicals that absorb some of the light and react to it. In fact there are multiple types of absorbers, which is why you can distinguish colors too.

dusty citrus
#

Alright, going off that, I wondered just how many watts I process on an average sunny day

#

A couple micros, maybe?

#

I think I remember Styropyro telling me that a safe laser is rated below 15 mW or something, so maybe less than that?

crystal ore
#

Sunlight is about 1000 watts per square meter total. Your pupils are a millimeter or few across, so your eyes would be indeed getting microwatts or so.

dusty citrus
#

A kilowatt per square meter

#

Insane...

crystal ore
#

Yup. Solar panels are only about 20% efficient, so they can put out about 200W/m^2 in direct sun.

dusty citrus
#

Why

#

What factors hinder the panel from getting power that much

#

Also, (ignoring natural capacitance) does a panel really only absorb energy if you’re pulling current from the panel and doing something with the energy?

#

I would assume so, I’m not very good with circuits

crystal ore
#

That's a little past my understanding of solar panels, so I'll defer to someone else there instead of possibly giving you wrong information.

tiny kelp
#

Solar panels work because of the photo-electric effect and reaction occurs whether or not you are "using the electricity" form a solar panel. The energy from the sun is "hitting" the panel whether you use it or not.

#

Current is when electrons move from one potential to another. This potential difference is what we call voltage. An alkaline battery has a voltage whether it's hooked up to a lightbulb, or sitting in a drawer.

#

So, when the light from the sun hits the solar panel, a voltage potential is created (it's a voltage source, not a current source). When you put a load across the solar panel, then current happens.

dusty citrus
#

This implies the existence of a current source that isn’t a voltage source

tiny kelp
#

I don't quite follow that

dusty citrus
#

Well, you said it’s a voltage source, not a current source, and I have to pull current for current to happen

#

So what would be the opposite

#

It’s a weird concept for me, sorry if it’s a bad question

tiny kelp
dusty citrus
#

Ah, nice

tiny kelp
#

" Unlike a battery that produces an (approximately) fixed voltage for a wide range of currents, a current source produces an (approximately) fixed current for a wide range of voltages."

#

The voltage across a battery is generally "fixed"

#

"12v battery"

dusty citrus
#

Right

tiny kelp
#

A solar panel is basically a battery that requires constant sunlight to stay charged and it's voltage can vary based on light

dusty citrus
#

So it’s a variable voltage source proportional to how much sun is hitting it

#

The more sun hits it, the more joules with which the electrons will want to travel, right?

#

So you’re saying the potential energy in a panel can always change, but I can choose to turn that into kinetic energy

#

The energy doesn’t spontaneously come when I use it

tiny kelp
#

Don't mix up voltage and energy (watts) which is voltage x current

dusty citrus
#

I see

tiny kelp
#

I'm not as familiar with the physical properties of solar panels (how much current they can support)

dusty citrus
#

Pretty sure voltage is joules per coulomb, right?

#

So potential energy?

#

And current is coulombs per second

#

That helped me understand the difference between the two

tiny kelp
#

yeah, that's accurate

#

current requires a "time" component

dusty citrus
#

Voltage is just “strength”

tiny kelp
#

eh, i wouldn't necessarily subscribe to the word Strength

#

Does "strength" mean "powerful"

#

That can make things confusing depending on who you talk to

dusty citrus
#

Well, no, not powerful, I mean strength as in how badly electrons want to move from one place to another

#

The bigger the difference, the harder they’ll “push”, I suppose

#

And more “pushing” means more speed, which means more current

#

This is just kinda how I view it

#

I’m not very experienced, but I suppose this works, right?

tiny kelp
#

well, the speed is really very close to the speed of light, adjusted for the medium

late fulcrum
dusty citrus
#

Yes

#

Literally pushing, haha

late fulcrum
#

Voltage is like pressure, current is like flow

dusty citrus
#

And ohms are the dynamics of the path the flow takes

tiny kelp
#

volt is really telling you how much work is required to move a charge between two points

#

I think you've got it

dusty citrus
#

I feel like “work” requires a side definition

tiny kelp
#

work = force * distance

dusty citrus
#

Ah, yes

#

So, with solar panels, what’s going on, put more simply?

#

More sun = more pressure?

late fulcrum
#

Kinda. The efficiency varies depending on the load. There are some circuits, known as "maximum power point" that adjust the load dynamically to get the most power (voltage times current) for the current conditions.

dusty citrus
#

Hm

tiny kelp
#

power transfer

dusty citrus
#

Are panels unstable? As in, would you use some low pass filters to prevent spikes?

#

I’m thinking of using one later

tiny kelp
#

why low pass?

#

Are you expecting sudden changes in your light source?

dusty citrus
#

Well, maybe because you wouldn’t want sudden voltage drops

#

Perhaps

tiny kelp
#

I'm not sure where you're at in your study, but you should have a good understanding of this:

#

Based on the types of questions you're asking

late fulcrum
#

The maximum power point trackers normally have a buck/boost regulator so the output voltage doesn't vary with the panel's output. Usually there's a battery bank too, to smooth things out and cover source/load variations.

dusty citrus
#

Ah

tiny kelp
#

Right, you wouldn't directly power something from a PV cell in a practical setting

#

Ok, this has been fun, but this yard isn't going to mow itself (unless i get solar powered mowing robot)

#

Good chat!

dusty citrus
#

Heh, thank you

late fulcrum
#

My lawn tractor is electric, I could at least theoretically run it with solar energy.

dusty citrus
#

I’ve been considering doing something cool with this huge solar panel I have stored up

#

I don’t have it with me, but it’s a good 2 x 3 feet

#

And made about 24 volts last time I checked it on a bright day

#

I’ve been thinking of making a solar powered usb phone charger

#

I have a usb battery with a screen that displays how much power is being pulled from it, and my phone seemed to draw a solid 6 watts

#

If I hooked up the panel to some big caps, and left them in the sun for a few minutes charging before plugging phones in, would it be voltage-spike-proof?

late fulcrum
#

Solar panels don't really produce voltage spikes, but they voltage they produce does vary with both the solar exposure and the load. The capacitors won't really change that appreciably.

On the subject of soldering, I want to try some soon, was thinking about doing a D1 mini first. I watched eevblogs soldering tutorials, and others. He was saying the range for most soldering on circuit boards will be around 650-750F, does that sound about right? I noticed my hakko defaults to 750F so maybe that's why.

ocean sigil
#

750F would be for lead-free solder.

#

That is what my Hakko is set for.

@gusty warren Good luck on your soldering practice. Remember to flux, tin and clean, be quick, and always pull the alloy from the joint before removing the heat, in case he didn’t mention it

haughty solstice

#

What is funny about it?

proven olive
#

LiPo batteries that have gone bad tend to puff up. Since LiPos can be volatile, this can be... hazardous. A pillow, of course, resembles such a puffed up LiPo

#

Fun fact: The reason you don't see many hard-cased LiPo batteries is that this puffing is a good thing. If there was a hard case around it, it would cause compression inside the cells, which, well. Leads to thermal runaway and fires.

ocean sigil
#

I love that term "thermal runaway" -- AKA explosion

proven olive

It's not quite an explosion, but that's about my knowledge of the difference

late fulcrum
gusty warren

That thing is very nice

late fulcrum

To me, "really nice" soldering irons are Thermaltronics and Metcal, which are considerably more expensive than that hot air station.

gusty warren
#

Hmmm

#

I'll have to look those up

#

I've got a hakko 888D? And a ts-100 which I think are both pretty nice lol

#

I'll look those up I'm curious why they cost $300+

#

I mean if you have an iron that will go from like 120-900F and everything, what else are they going to do for you

late fulcrum
#

The Metcal CV-5210 can detect whether you've made a good solder joint, but it'll set you back $900.

#

The Thermaltronics one heats and reacts very quickly, so won't overheat a tiny component but can dump plenty of heat to solder a large one.

sinful lark
#

Hypothetically, if I needed to squeeze a servo's pulse pin and I2C's clock pin into one, could I send multiple 1-2 millisecond pulses per 20ms period, and use the pulses for I2C clock?

crystal ore
#

It depends on the servo. Some of them will just do a low-pass filter on the signal and get an analog voltage out to operate from, in which case you have some freedom to play with the clocks, as long as the overall duty cycle is what you want. Other servos will be operating on digital logic and will be looking at all the edges to do pulse timing measurements.

late fulcrum
#

So, forming the pulses to correspond to the servo specifications, but also use them to clock I2C transactions? That's an odd use case, but may be possible, depending on if the I2C peripherals minded such a slow clock.

gusty warren
#

how does a soldering iron detect if you made a good solder joint? 💥

ocean sigil
#

@gusty warren it doesn't.

limpid wharf
#

@gusty warren You need to make sure it's shiny and cone-shaped.

gusty warren
#

well yes LOL

#

apparently that one has tech that does

#

and it lights up a green light in the handle when your joint is "good"

ocean sigil
#

can you post a link to it?

gusty warren
#

but it's $900

#

there's a video

#

it does lots of fancy stuff, and for that price, it should.

#

I think that is an awesome feature but I don't feel like it's something you really need with any kind of soldering experience.

#

my first 10 solders ever had shiny cone shapes.

ocean sigil
#

The intermetallic compound thickness is critical in the formation of a solder joint. Connection Validation (CV) evaluates the quality of the solder joint by calculating the intermetallic compound formation and provides closed loop feedback to the operator. CV provides feedback to the operator via the LED light ring integrated in the hand-piece.

gusty warren
#

it's not rocket science.

ocean sigil
#

I think that means it's magic 😉

gusty warren
#

yes

#

i'd have to get some anecdotal experience from someone that doesn't work for them about how well that tech actually works.

ocean sigil
#

#

I have a hakko 888D and a TS-100 and I feel like those are pretty nice and work great.

#

lot of people use cheap $20 irons.

late fulcrum
#

I wasn't really suggesting someone splash out the thick end of a thousand dollars on an iron, just replying to the "why are there expensive irons" question.

#

As in all engineering, it's a tradeoff, and the weights of the parameters vary by the user. For someone who's building stuff every day, a nice iron is more important than for someone who just solders a couple of components every few weeks. Similarly, some people have the means to drop serious cash on equipment, most of us don't.

gusty warren
#

yeah I was just wondering, I'm not averse to dropping coin on good stuff, you just have to find the point of diminishing returns. 😄

#

speaking of irons, does anyone know how important the ground wire is that comes with the TS-100? I mean the power supply has 3 prongs so I assume it's grounded, is the ground wire they give you supposed to be extra protection? it seems inconvenient haha.

late fulcrum
#

It's mostly protection for the circuitry you're soldering, to avoid static electricity damage.

gusty warren
#

ahhhh

#

seems kind of inconvenient to have hanging off of there and trying to use it, but it is what it is.

#

so I assume static electricity is created inside of the iron handle or might be.

slow slate
#

good day everyone. i would like to ask for your help about my questions regarding inductors (basic fundamentals). is this the right place to ask?

short bone
#

@slow slate you can ask here

slow slate
#

apologies if my understanding is incorrect. i understand that because back emf opposes, it should counter the applied voltage (hence, the negative or downward spike of the inductor) as shown in figure 2.123. (the reference circuit is just an RL circuit hence VL and VR)

#

this is where i am very confused

#

in the graph above, the inductor spikes are proportional in direction of the applied signal (Vs), which is the opposite of what was shown in figure 2.123

#

practical experiments also show this result. so my question is why? since back emf opposes the applied voltage, then shouldn't it be negative to counteract the positive cycle of the voltage?

late fulcrum
#

Which ones are you referring to? VL?

slow slate
#

yup VL 🙂

#

figure 2.123 and the figure above seems contradicting to me... there's something i'm missing

late fulcrum
#

There are a couple of things going on here. The way I read figure 2.123, the voltage is in the same direction. However, that voltage isn't the counter EMF (which is indeed negative), it's the voltage drop across the inductor, which results from the counter-EMF making it appear that the inductor has more impedance, so it has a larger voltage drop.

slow slate
#

so the spike is actually the result of the counter emf. it makes sense now! thank you very much for that explanation, @late fulcrum! 🙂

#

Anybody know how I should setup a VM to test viruses in VMware player
@sharp jasper idk about testing viruses but I run VMs using VirtualBox

grave crest
#

@sharp jasper Playing with viruses is akin to playing with fire. It's not something that I'd recommend without an extraordinary amount of preparation and experience, and even then, I'd be against it.

There's very little...or anything...to be gained with a very high risk.

proven olive
#

There's really no "Safe" way to play with viruses, but at the very least I'd recommend an "Expendable" computer with no network connection to host the VMs. Anything that needs transferring can be done via USB drives, and I'd be wary of even those. If you're looking to play with Windows viruses, make sure the main computer runs some flavor of.... Not Windows. It's not a perfect protection, but it helps. Similarly, the USB that you use to transfer things will need to be sanitized somehow.

#

If you're looking to play with old viruses, like things that were on Windows 95, 98, XP, etc, then you're a little safer since modern AV should catch them, but even then. Expendable computer, no network connection at all. If something gets out, wipe the computer and start over.

grave crest
#

There are even viruses that can hide in the BIOS, surviving a system wipe. Those are rare, but not unheard of.

proven olive
#

Well. I presume if you're playing with viruses you're going to curate those viruses.

pearl vigil
#

Thats a good community reply, virtual machines are in theory a completely isolated virtual machine, but in practice there exists a whole community devoted to escaping secure enclaves, virtual machines, and containers like docker. Again we don't know exactly what you're playing with, but grab a wicked old thinkpad off ebay and air gap it is a good way to go.

burnt tendon
#

Yeah, there have been a lot of hypervisor escape attacks.
