im mainly speaking about discord servers
yeah..
it's "draconity.org's" discord server
it's an old 2003 forum that has a discord server
bots are often abused, or just not needed
@sleek urchin I digress
yeah
there's a reason that on the starbound discord server, the bot commands channel it called botspam
well there is the swear bot
hey vsauce, micheal here. Is being a coder like being in an abusive relationship?
that seems inappropriate
very well

Well that project must've had its ups and downs...
A perfect project for the spring time too!
nice gif @gloomy pilot xD
https://www.humblebundle.com/software/vegas-pro-creative-freedom-rebundle felt to share as i think it might be some that make videos of what they making
Yes
I do!
yeah, I like it too. the nightly (version 5) is 👍 👍
Oh, I have the stable release.
Well, I tried a few live-cd style Linux variants and still can't find a compelling reason to move away from TinyCore Linux - they got it right, and they got it right a long time ago.
I always need persistence and 'toram' (embed) (run from ramdisk only; no media mounted). Don't find that integrated so well, even in the debian live cd images.
As much as people make fun of Ubuntu being a entry level linux, I always seem to resort back to it
Entry level makes a good baseline for a lot of use cases.
kinda like windows!
cool
My last year school teacher still has my Body Systems project on display, and I did that in October 2016. I think I got the best grade on it since the project was to make models of the 8 Body systems. One person made theirs out of a box but I just layered foam and a Halloween Skeleton 4 pack. Still proud of that project.
@somber summit have a picture?
so anyone know any of the prop makers for the Gotham tv show? Arduino Unos were used in tonight's episode (for non-friendly uses)...
We shall worship our gods.
yay!
@stuck moth Can’t have my phone on at school but might snap a pic at the end of the school year. It was actually a clean project, I did like an X-Shape with two cardboard flaps intersected and each side of the flap had a body system.
Does anyone play Polytopia
aw, pighixxx is down :<
their homepage redirects to: http://www.pighixxx.com/test/ and shows up as Error establishing a database connection XP
has anyone tried the yihua 936 or 937?
@unkempt shoal Yihua 936: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GdV7XBae74
Dave takes a look at the world's cheapest temperature controlled soldering station, the $16 Hakko 936 knockoff Yihua 936 from Hobby King. How does it compare...
I saw that, any thoughts?
not sure your application but should be alright if you're just starting.. id check if the latest ones being shipped out are better/worse (in terms of safety standards wrt the internals) and temperature control.
well, just hobby use
i can get it for 60 singapore bucks
if i can get a haiko 888 for close to 120, i would get that
I started off with cheapest possible i could get away with, then upgraded as i soldered more and found out which things (features) i needed with my soldering
this was my next step after the Radio Shack 30W just couldn't cut it anymore. I've been pleased with it so far (upgrade to real Hakko tips...world of difference): https://www.amazon.com/Aoyue-Variable-Soldering-Station-Removable/dp/B00MCVCHJM
Aoyue 469 Variable Power 60 Watt Soldering Station with Removable Tip Design- ESD Safe - - Amazon.com
@unkempt shoal I had a Yihua, it's ok but a used, but well-loved, hakko or weller will serve you better (check ebay)
Mine took a really long time to heat up, which got annoying compared to the speed hakko/wellers take to heat up
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon® Wildlands is free to play this weekend on steam!
@unkempt shoal Watch out for counterfeit Hakko items, both soldering stations and tips. The counterfeits are very common.
I bought a used FX888 (not D), which has an analog knob. They are hard to find used. The user interface of the FX888D is terrible: it's too easy to change the calibration when you think you're changing the temperature. But I ended up with two pencil assemblies with bad heater/sensors. I bought new parts from Hakko and repaired them. So I didn't save any money over buying a new FX888D.
@ocean sigil is that a full cord?
Two!
you have help ?
My wife and I will have fun for a few weekends.
Yup! Should be fine by the end of the year
so since this is ot, anyone want to play some starbound?
It figures. Yesterday I order a new UPS since we have occasional micro-brownouts that powerdown my rig. This weekend we get a "historic" ice-storm... I anticipate power outages. UPS arrives Monday.
Related: what is it with power lines STILL being located above ground?
infrastructure costs
power above ground is cheepr and safer to maintain
underground you have floods and other unfun issues
The Earth's electrical field rises about 100 volts per meter above the ground.
http://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/II_09.html
If you let a drop of solvent drip more than about 18 inches (in free-fall) there is some finite potential for it to give off a spark, just from falling that far in the electrical field of the Earth.
Therefore, you ought to ground a bucket before decanting (flammable) solvent into that bucket. You ground the two together (the vat, raised at some level above the floor, and the bucket sitting on the floor).
That's also why raindrops create lightning. They tend to separate the charges in the atmosphere, and concentrate them, locally.
*The total potential difference from the surface of the earth to the top of the atmosphere is about 400,000 volts.
--Feynman • Leighton • Sands*
@covert spire not sure about the splitter. It came from a local provider. I expect it was machine split. Nice that he does 16” lengths . We have a small stove and 18” pieces are a challenge.
A friend of mine tosses the long pieces aside until good weather, then runs them all through a saw so they'll fit into his stove.
I’ve done that!
I think I've personally fed about a cord of wood through a wood-burning stove, minding the property of two people who own and operate them, over the years. I'm pretty good at it. ;)
We typically burn about a cord a year. It’s a nice way to heat the main floor.
It's probably very unhealthy but I do enjoy the heck out of it.
a cord a year is standard for most?
Hard to say. Ours burns clean. Hard to compare to the overall impact of the equivalent propane. (Our primary source)
if they are using it with something esle?
a cord of firewood is a fair bit, that's 85 ft^3
accounting for air
thats the house size +
averages about 85 cubic if you go based on wood volume
@sleek urchin yes, but 128 cu ft is the standard definition. At least here it is.
i wonder
Imagine having to do that all by hand with an axe
I don't have to
Warms you twice!
When I was younger, we purchased it in 4 foot lengths and did our own cutting and splitting. Now getting it cut/split is a real treat!
a litlle splitting can still be cathartic
I have a friend that didn't want to deal with firewood so he put in a wood pellet stove. More efficient and less backbreaking?
pellets are kinda cool
I’ve heard good things about pellet stoves. Not ready to switch yet. But...
Felt like I split that much wood by hand last week
You are Chuck Norris?
Hah
i wish i could work at adafruit
apply for a job, next time they are hireing ?
im too young to get a full time job, i just do freelance dev work atm
oh
yeah
I split wood the other day, the only thing I had was an axe head so I used logs to drive the axe head in like a wedge.. that got old really fast
Well, using one with wider head certainly helped, one thing I learned to survive splitting faster was to not try to drive it in, but to find the “Zen” of where to split, which made super easy in comparison. The cracks usually leave biggest clue, but there are fractures all around it
Bought a fiskers axe a few years ago, it looks like a normal axe but a half swing will go through most logs
Ah, the reason I found the wide one easy isn’t because of going into it, I found some types seem to be funny once you sink ax into it, it still doesn’t want to split, wide ones helped to that, tho I think it was Fiskars we used, the logs just were that flipping huge
reading grain is a mystic art. and strap in if you get a good knot going across... though, i don't chop much these days; more saw/plane actions.
Well, I know some guys that can teach ya
If ya find me near them, I’m the one laying on ground curled up, and cringing from pain of chopping the parts that had knots
I prefer using a maul to an axe - for bigger pieces it is just easy to add a wedge and use the hammer end of the maul.
Maul is a LOT easier than axe. I watched my neighbor yesterday splitting and he’s let his 18-19 yr of stepson doing most of work
Each time maul got stuck, they used hammer to smack it down, like wedge
helps to have 2 mauls 😉
Well, since he was doing this to remove a tree from his yard . . .
I don’t know if he has any trees left tho
Tho, if I keep going to the Earthskills events, I’m going to want my own maul
Got blisters from one they had
Hey does anyone know how to get on the loading page of discord (the words summited by people and are featured under the discord loading symbol)
@dusty citrus please don't propagate that here. I believe it has been warned and removed once already today.
When you clean out a vacuum cleaner, you become the vacuum cleaner.
oh god not more spam
There we go all gone sorry about that I didn’t know it was a big deal .... wasn’t trying to spam or anything like that
@dusty citrus thanks. no worries (it is discord afterall). 😄
This is probably the most random question, but offtopic is a fine place for such -- anyone here knowledgable with art, or know someone who is?
I had an opportunity to get a Winston Churchill print of a painting he did, signed & numbered. I missed the chance though, and I'm just trying to see what the approx. value of something like that would go for.
@grave crest do you remember the name of the painting ?
No, in fact, it wasn't even titled (per the seller). I tried looking it up -- but Sir Churchill was rather prolific. He created over 500 paintings. Many of which were printed and signed in the UK.
Looked like something he did of Chartwell (his home), with a lake + kids playing + lots of trees. Not his more popular Egypt paintings.
Part of me is kicking myself for missing getting it. Part of me is telling myself "look Mr. Certainly, it wasn't eye-popping. You'd be buying it only for an investment based on the namesake."
It was something that a very well-off-to-do family would put over the fireplace as something to fill the space on an empty wall. Very neutral, non-offending print.
I have a bald eagle print that is worth a bit of money #murica
oh and 40meters hf is busy this morning
alot of prints are not worth much
if you remember it I could try to find in in the nyc library database, I have a card
Anyone know where they hid the device manager in windows 10? After this last update, I can't seem to find it on my laptop.
Making Win 10 sound so much better now
also....since getting rid of cortana, I don't seem to have a search area in the start menu anymore...yay
From what I gathered, each update will make it better
lol best part of this update was they reinstalled silverlight, the microsoft app store, xbox live, and a bunch of other stuff I removed
Lol
I use Win10 for work and for one secondary system -- and let me tell you, the amount of cruft that's installed is mindboggling.
Its in Control Panel
And doesn't matter if you remove it, it comes back.
You'd think after being cloned that many times, there'd be genetic degradation.
where in control panel?
Its under Devices and Printers
Try going to run and enter "devmgmt.msc"
Hardware Sound then Devices and Printers and Then Device Manager
Or Use Shortcut as Certainly said
or Windows key + Pause key
BTw @grave crest I love your Beard
Unfortunately genetic degradation doesn’t affect Win apps
hmmm....so the old tree style device manager is gone? boooo
He does have an awesome beard
Is it tactical?
Extra gruft is part of my frustration
thanks @grave crest that's the one I've been looking for. The printers one is different. Wonder why they hid the old one?
Also now I can add even less direct hardware control, fantastic
@sturdy oyster you can also just hit the "start" button/windows key and start typing. "de" gets me to device manager...
thanks folks
lol So, after fighting with my pi zero w forever, I just got out my USB hub and another Pi 0 (1.3). Hadn't realized until now that I am no longer the owner of a standard USB cable 😦
USB cables are wonderful
I'm going through a similar issue -- I'm just getting my first USB-C device (Samsung phone). So now I have to haul around cables or adapters for battery packs & wall wart chargers for USB-C, USB-micro, and Lightning.
Yeah, it just struck me as funny how at one time we were all probably practically swimming in them, but now that everything has gone micro, mini, c, etc...the standard ones are almost as unusual as an old rotary phone.
And I have to do this for my commute/work bag, my nightstand, my car, and my desk. Some of this stuff is "built-in" to my desk cabling, so now I have to figure out what else I need to buy. what a racket 😃
@grave crest lol I hear ya. I can't wait til usb C gets more adoption. It's so nice to not have to worry about the cable orientation
I have an Anker-branded micro-usb -> USBC adapter. So I can reuse my micro-usb cables. I don't need the quick charge capabilities of a direct USB-C adapter....10w is fine with me.
I love USB-C....but I have plenty of nice, functional devices (like bose headphones) that need micro-usb
I'm not replacing those on a whim.
woot my monitor is out for delivery
It's amazing it took this long for someone to say "hey, you know what would be nice? Not having to flip the cable around five times when I try to plug in my phone."
So frustrating.
neat
let me see if I can find it
This is not just any ordinary micro USB cable. It's fully reversible, meaning you can plug it in any direction! No more guessing!!! - Get the MicFlip on amaz...
I read about in popsci like years ago
I've found these multi-headed hydra cables...they try to do everything, but do nothing well.
heem
this is not a hydra
here is a bit better article https://www.cnet.com/news/finally-a-reversible-micro-usb-cable/
We don’t need more cables!
Everytime I see a link in discord I want to rightclick>open in new tab but apparently discord is not a browser:P
I just got my 3rd monitor, and I now know 2 things, 1 I will never need to alt tab junst to see something again and 2 I need to monunt 2 of them
I used to run 3 monitors but I found it got distracting being able to see everything at once, My third monitor now is just for command line stuff like viewing server logs in web dev
Two is great for most applications
All depends on what you do, and even that can change on a day-to-day basis.
Some days, I'm absolutely content with a 15" laptop screen.
Other days, I'm streaming to a TV + connecting a 30" monitor + wishing I had more screen real estate.
I've been eyeballing those new 34" curved monitors. Current laptop can't support it. So that'd mean I'm due for an upgrade, right? 😃 😃 😃 Slippery slope.
Really want a second 27 to match miy first, but if I'm gonna buy an old monitor to match this one, I should just buy a new set
My "biggest" problem is...I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro that's actually 100% capable of everything I do.
So I drool in envy at newer fancier things that aren't quite good enough to justify the upgrade.
I've been considering next laptop I get to be a mac, but I have too many issues with apple products to justify it
I'm using a 2013 MBP. The newer ones leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. Also, I don't think I should be eating them.
All seriousness, the shallow keyboard and exclusive reliance on USBC are almost deal-breakers.
After being on 2 full time for a wile it was odd being on one when Windows went sideways
After being on 2 full time for a wile it was odd being on one when Windows went sideways
@grave crest I feel you, the shallow keyboards hurt my hands
I mean now that I have dedicated linux/windows boxes I might get away with all the compatibilty issues, just use remote desktop if I need to access them
RDP is handy
The brain stores the alphabet as a Linked List, you get access to the head, tail can move forwards and backwards but can't access an index...
I noticed there's a Santander (sp) in Spain. A city named that.
today's fun shenanigans: the power to part of the apartment went out briefly because there's a server, desktop, and laser printer all on the same circuit breaker and in retrospect that was a horrible idea.
Server and desktop could use their own UPS units 😃
the printer started printing and everything on the breaker turned off bc it wasn't providing enough power. which caused the printer to stop printing, so everything recovered. except the printer, which is functional but very confused.
Or a really energetic gerbil + power generating wheel.
yeah, the server + desktop are on a single UPS, which is... suboptimal lmao
i was using my desktop, which is in the same room but on a different circuit, and all of a sudden there was a loud BEEEEEEEEEP from the UPS as the same time the light flickered and the printer made angry noises lol
Also, public service announcement -- never put a laser printer on a UPS. It can cause bad things to happen.
The More You Know (tm) 🌠
oh? my gf and i don't really care enough about it to put it on a UPS, so don't have that problem, but i'm very curious now.
Draws too much power at peak usage, can easily overload the UPS.
ahh, gotcha. will make note not to put that on a UPS when inevitably rearranging things. 😃
Now, this is assuming consumer-level UPS units. If you have a beastly server/datacenter grade UPS that's specc'ed out to handle peak load....then you're in a minority who knows how to break the rules safely 😃
UPDATE: the printer has been relocated to the awkwardly designed bedroom closet. https://twitter.com/duckinator/status/986396020337717249
we're considering getting a little server rack at some point to put on that step at some point, but don't have the money just yet.
@covert acorn Sounds like the LACK RACK is just for you. The IKEA Lack "disposable" table has just the right dimensions for server rack rails.

@grave crest I didn't recognise most of them either. I use Pycharm CE which is free, and haven't felt like I needed the features that come with the Pro edition.
i feel the orily books alone make it worth it then you get the 50$ DigitalOcean credit there you go instent value and i may like the gitkracken at least there is one year to try that
I guess I just have a strong aversion to subscription services. They're not inherently bad, it's just my own issue to work through -- a knee-jerk reaction.
whats even worse is most of the subcription things is for premium features to free things
WooHoo! Tindie store up & running with logic probe kits as seen on Show & Tell last week (where I did my best @swift hatch impersonation and worked without sound).
@cursive pike What's the link to your store?
Thank you Mr. Zombie Wizard. 😃
😃
If anyone has an interest in low level hardware retro computing, Ihave some projects in mind.
Wait. Are you implying that there are people who aren't interested in low level hardware retro computing? 😜
I've met a few.
Those must be weird folks.
Just to make sure... I'm talking about designing & building 8-bit system with actual oldschool ICs.
And coding in assembly 😃
The closest I've ever really gotten to assembly was with the Parallax Propeller. And that was scary at times... still love that chip though.
looks for propeller; haven't seen it in a while
There is any other kind of retro computer stuff?
Well, I am thinking of doing a pi with emulator to kind making retro computer
But, I know that isn’t legit
Except as that tablet
Yeah, you can do a lot with emulators.
Writing an 8-bit CPU emulator is quite a bit of fun, actually.
The 6502 has a really clean instruction encoding, makes it a nice project to write an assemble/executer/dissassembler.
speaking of 8 bit computer this is always fun https://www.tindie.com/products/Semachthemonkey/rc2014-classic-homebrew-z80-computer-kit/
@cursive pike I ordered my gameboy/circuitpython cartridge from oshpark
@stuck moth I saw you mention that.
😃
@sentinel_infinitus#4157 That project is neat, but I’m skeptical of the mechanical robustness of using 1x header strip as the bus connection.
But they’re small boards...
Half the fun is designing it, though. which is how I’ve resisted ordering one 😃
I've been thinking going completely overboard.
using 2x PCIe x8 or x16 connectors.
Could do fully exposed 64bit address and data busses on the x16 then..
(kind of entirely overkill, most modern processors have "only" 48 bits of physical address space internally)
Reasons I’m broke; Tindie
I’m too impatient to get into soldering it together to sit & design
And now we know why Dastels needs a weekly order of resisters, to keep resisting these boards
Tho, to keep down a bit on my expenses, I’m trying to get back into Chess, my cheapest hobby
I prefer to build, rather than buy most times.
There goes my productivity 😃 I just got my invite into the beta of the upcoming WoW expansion.
World of Battleships is awesome way to spend time
I missed prior events on that, and since they stopped inviting me
Also, May the Force (Fourth) be with y’all
I just ordered a logic probe kit from @cursive pike can't wait to put it together and use it!
@swift hatch Awesome! I'm doing a run to the post office in a few minutes and will get that out to you today!
now that's great service!
@swift hatch And even sooner since I don't need to print a case.

For some reason I have a desire to see if I can build it into something I find at a yard sale.
like a princess wand toy maybe
@swift hatch That I want to see 😃 It's small enough to fit most anywhere: 3" x .3" roughly. I'm not sure how long of a probe tip wire you can get away with, but likely more that you'd need.
@cursive pike have you seen the risc-v build? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLs_NRwu1Y4

@swift hatch Always awesome to see someone reuse old toys than trash them.
I’m surprised ya wasn’t spamming posts all day about it
those are my only 2. i have some for the next few days though about SW
At least it isn’t Tatooine
I'd figure the floor is lava would be worse
Lava rocks can be useful, planet full of sand, and in galaxy where glass is nearly useless . . .
it was 80F in my class building weds
Wait, 80F is fantastic!!!
no air moving
I was just having chat about 110F
we had presentation that day too
I want your space!
may have been 85 90
If 90F is worste you deal with, I’d love it there
Although, I have worked in places that s literal Tatooine
I prefer winter conditions. Look up whalin complex, Eastern Kentucky University.
we are under funded
Have coffee sales
we haven't had new computers in the labs in years
i think we would get in trouble with all powerful Aramark
Anyone remember that Linux micro board?
I mentioned it to someone, but I couldn’t remember name, or find a link for it
There are several of them
http://linuxgizmos.com/ covers these kinds of boards
just lookin for that
I didn’t see in list there, it’s a micro control board, with rather powerful proc chip capable of Ubuntu operating system
Nevermind, I played around on site, found it
Thanks
May the 4th be with you
Adafruit discord is kinda dead today. is everyone enjoying their tacos?
Initial run of logic probes sold out!
@covert spire guess what tomorrow is
Return of the Sixth?
I don’t know
the 7th awakens
Ah
and the day after?
I remember Return of the Syth
Also, today is Free Comic Book Day
Hmmm
I don’t know
the eighth strikes back
Hah
thats as far as i got
No Rogue 9?
thats good
shudder
looks creepy
Funny considering it’s the dark side
Some of the nightsister stuff from star wars is really creepy. They use life force
This is what I mean, to me, villains should be dark & evil, so if truly good vs bad, show it as such, not like “oh, they’re bad because they’re anti-the current gov.”
No, he is green
Just like Deadpool
All about the money, nothing else
Sorry, I’m distracted trying to sew patches on my gym bag
Because . . . Custom
Wait, privacy is a thing?!?!?
@covert spire when you see it 😀
It’s a trap!
And the other one too
Hah
I haven’t seen show&tell in a while, been crazy busy
Partly because Kung Fu is same night
@covert spire You can always watch it later.
anyone want to play rocket league with me
I’ve been getting into chess
@covert spire my daughter got started in chess with an afterschool program. got to go to a couple of national tournaments.
Noice
Only time I played growing up was against family, none of schools I went to ever had such programs
I thought I was good then she came back from one meeting and whooped me in chess.
I never really got into memorizing the strategies and openings, just play along for fun
I never had any lessons really, I studied strategies when I was driving truck. Needed something to do. Video games became a replacement after few months, and now for first time learning anything
They teach fundamentals & endings
they have interactive online chess with other real players.
Hi everyone, I wanted to know if this Adafruit server is going to take part of the Burple event that's going on now. If so, I can repaint the logo with the correct colors.
So, we going to do Adapink for Adafruit anniversary?
Of course! Why not?
@undone gyro We're not but thanks for the offer!
I need help what movie should I see? A Quiet Place or Infinity War?
Infinity War
Okie dokie
A Quiet Place
Oh gosh it’s torn again
Infinity war lol
What about the tv shows?
Comics?
Art books?
Informational books? Background books?
Yes yes
I even went to Hollywood studios for other stuff
I keep up with StarWars, I even own a life size remote control R2
So Cool! I got arrested by a stormtrooper in Hollywood studios. And chewbacca played with the ears on my yoda hat
I got arrested because of the yoda hat
Haha

Me at a disaster relief call out
I was so tired. We were cleaning up after flooding in Missouri in January 2016
Ah
Southern Baptist disaster relief is the group I am a part of. You likely will see the "yellow shirts" on relief calls. We help after fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, my grandfather was there after 9/11, we feed people, we have shower trailers, laundry trailers, comms.
We even help local people. Like when a bunch of trees fall on your house and need them cleared? We do that. Just call the state office.
I just pull out a chainsaw
A lot of people that we do this for don't have a chainsaw or are too old
There were 30 trees crisscrossed over a house that we worked on. Talk about strategy
I may be exaggerating 10 it more like it
@BobaFETT#0170 Make sure you are super safe in doing what you do. Especially if you are also around those giant wood chippers. I've seen them feed telephone poles through them and they shred them like paper.
@proven olive @swift hatch @graceful forge I just posted a logic probe build video to my youtube channel. Pay attention to the starting bit about cleaning off the mouse nibbles. For the next run I'll look into "full" milling so that won't be an issue.
I just got mail from OshPark that the first batch of CPX breadboard biscuits shipped, so some will be on my Tindie store once they arrive. The rest when more hardware arrives.
@cursive pike nice! i got some mail from you today so that's excellent timing
@graceful forge There are already build videos up for the other tools boards. Previous version of the boards, but pretty much the same. Just get the resistor sticks the right way round (one end of the stick as well as on the PCB are marked)
@proven olive Cool.
woot!
It's Nerd Night, though, so I won't be home for a while...
...when is it not nerd night?
Nerd 24/7 over here.
Ohh... cube... so much fun!
As an MTG player, you'll appreciate my business card tucked in the package.
Well, if you play UB.
My favorite playstyle is UBR. Make people draw cards. Draw cards. Now punish for card draw!
Nice
I tend to prefer straight UB. Deny, mill, kill, punish. Win at any cost.
😃
BR can be fun as well. Rakdos back in the day, vampires more recently.
Next would be straight G, get big... lay down some trampling hurt.
I built a Commander deck for S&G that had the sole purpose of "Mindless ramp" - More forests!
And then it turns them all to creatures
It was.... Surprisingly effective.
I spattered a miniscule amount of solder in my eye
Ow
If you're a Terminator, that's what you call Visine.
For the rest of us organics, owwies.
Yeah I forgot to get a pair of goggles yesterday
Can't be too safe.
Lol
googles for goggles

The caption for that photo could be: NASA couldn't afford a full-sized space capsule, so they asked the astronaut if he wouldn't mind dangling his legs out, just a bit
Hah!
if you have DJI Mavic and Windows machine you can test this https://github.com/dji-sdk/Windows-SDK-Workshop
onboard sdk support Windows as well
@spare ether doing that workshop would help how you could use those 3D printed gadgets in your DJI

Cannot start a line with an Em space.
However, the invisible plus is okay to start a line and won't be compressed out.
As with most whitespace-suppression algorithms, this can be circumvented by a hybrid approach:
Use a single Invisible Plus (U+2064) to begin the line, then follow with any number of Em spaces (U+2003).
The software is biased against a leading non-printing character, but doesn't mind multiple Em spaces mid-sentence!

@sick adder Indeed it does. It matches strings, it can't figure out how to deal with strings in longer words. There's a few that do that. 😃

@Xeon feelings are never wrong. They are by definition not subject to right or wrong.
However sometimes there's a correlation between use and application of a conscience and feelings that might provoke a body to investigate their own actions or behavior.
Maybe.
They can definitely point to the wrong (i.e. incorrect) thing. ;)
Also, wrong (again, incorrect) thought often provokes the corresponding feeling -- so in that sense, when feelings don't match facts, suspect wrong thinking. ;)
p.s. I write to attempt to uncover what and how I think about things, not to state knowledge (especially in this instance). Regard this as a snapshot, not a swan song. ;)

How much do case fans actually help cool a computer? Didn't realize this case came with out them, but for 25$ I can't complain
The Mini-ITX form factor has manufacturers stating whether or not a fan is required for a specific CPU. First thing to look at is how many dissipated Watts for a CPU (TDP).
ex.
Intel Atom D525 has 13W TDP, which puts it in the fanless category.
This is one is full ATX, currently one fan on the CPU (I7-8700) and one built into the PSU, but might make a run and go pick up a few case fans
Welp two additional 120mm fans going, this system that used to get to 70Celsius doesn't even reach 50degrees anymore

Could someone please point me to a good site about Bluetooth and how it works? I can google a gazillion "explaining how BT works" but it's all an extremely dumbed-down rubbish. What I'm looking on is for example how does the transmission of two idle devices look. Maybe accompanied with some nice graphic explanation and a timeline of the broadcasts etc...
@dusty citrus this one isn't super-dumbed-down, but still not particle physics thesis level. Skip ahead to he "Lets Get Technical" section. Only other thing I would recommend is reading the actual whitepapers from the Bluetooth organization... https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-does-bluetooth-work/
@tame saddle that's still on a level of "you have two transmitters talking to each other" tho... What I would like to know is if the two devices talk to each other after pairing or if they switch to some low-power mode where there is no radio chatter at all.
guess I'll have to chew trough the whitepapers...
yeah, that's probably the unfortunate answer. 😦
That's usually the answer for most tech
hey there
@dusty citrus
https://www.digikey.com/en/articles/techzone/2011/dec/bluetooth-goes-ultra-low-power
quote Bluetooth Low Energy uses a simple stack that enables asynchronous communication with low-power devices, such as wireless sensors that send low volumes of data at infrequent intervals. Connections can be established quickly and released as soon as the data exchange is complete, minimizing PA on time and thus power consumption.
PA == Power Amplifier (final RF stage in a transmitter).
aka 'the finals' (final amplifier tubes/transistors) in ham radio jargon.
hey so...
I have a external hdd
the hard drive itself is corrupted
And I cant format it because my computer freezes up whenever it tries to read a corrupted medium
any way to force format the hdd?
@dreamy solstice what os?
windows 10
you could try booting from a Linux Live DVD like Knoppix, attach the drive, and then reformat it from Linux. You might also be able to find a standalone disk formatter/checker from the disk driver's manufacturer
k
why does it cause freeze ups?
the drive itself isnt damaged
just the data on it
also, is there a way to fuse my usb to sata adapter to my external hdd?
so it cant come unconnected?

Unreal Gold is currently free on GOG and Steam.
Well when you have one hundred percent of the source code available for inspection, that's a thing.
Also, the Linux devs aren't above a healthy dose of reverse-engineering.
Here, it isn't so much Linux per se, but Free Open-Source Software in general that provides the additional access.
FreeBSD was once notably prolific in supporting unusual hardware (may still be for all I know).
I have missplaced my mouse's dongle
is there a way to make a replacement dongle?

I cant just willy nilly buy stuff online
I have a generic usb wifi dongle
idk if u can make one out of a usb wifi dongle i dont think so but im no expert
if its like logitech or something then i think u can get a reciever for like lesser than 4
wireless keyboard/mouse dongles are not conventional wifi. they often use the same frequencies but use some other protocol
I mean, what if I reprogrammed the dongle?
They're not reprogrammable without considerable trouble, if at all. There's no need to, since the factory controls all that during manufacturing.
If we were on IRC I might say 'steal the money' ;)
Maybe you own something interesting and can barter with it. Ask your friends and acquaintances if they happen to have what you need. Have a list of things you'd be willing to part with, on hand.
If you do decide to go ahead with the theft plan, see if you can discuss it with a Jesuit first.

Is this the de facto memes channel?
Really? That seems...harsh
Yeah I know but it's for the greater good. ;)
This place is different from anyplace else.
Don't see any mention of that in #code-of-conduct ...
Yeah but that's not how it works.
Think of the code of conduct as the minimums.
The actual required conduct is a good deal more than the CoC.
There's small bits of this subject covered in the weekly CircuitPython meeting (which is available on YouTube).
The CoC is being reworked. As to memes or not, maybe be reluctant to spend a lot of time on that here, but just out of consideration of other people who have to wade through everything. This channel is more for stuff that doesn't really fit in the other channels.
I just figured a GIFs/memes channel was standard on Discord servers (if for no other reason than that signal to noise ratio in other channels is favorable)
It's cool whatever mods choose, as long as it's clear in the rules
we just started using collapsed channel lists like two days ago. ;)
I've seen Scott @stuck moth create a new channel on the most casual mention of a new topic for one.
So that would explain #pet-photos
Well apparently there's a need for that. /boggle -- heheh. Dan's absolutely right -- if it's not definitely offensive (scott uses 'kind' vs 'unkind') then it's just the matter of clutter and sift.
I'm ok with memes in offtopic as long as they are kind as @dusty citrus points out
