@severe glen That goes in a bit of a different direction. My idea is to automate the tedious job of decorating dozens of identical cookies.

dusty citrus
#

Homer Price and the Doughnut Machine

cursive pike
#

I find myself toying with the idea of putting a camera on it to snap a pic of the cookie on the bed, analyze it to adjust the geometry to line up exactly with the cookie . Another idea is to have a jig that holds the cookie in place. Seeing as I am likely going to print custom cookie cutters, printing a jig is an easy next step. Or I could just start with round cookies 😃

#

MVP is decorating round cookies.

#

(Minimum Viable Product)

#

Ah, but then there has to be a way to ensure the cookie doesn't rotate.

#

Hmm... there's a ton of depth to this.

dusty citrus
#

cookie glue?

proven olive
#

What @dusty citrus is referring to is corn syrup. We use it at work for sticking stuff to packaging ALL the time.

#

A glass bed, put some corn syrup down, and put the cookie down. Wait a little bit, and the cookie shouldn't move.

#

If you chill the bed, it'll be even more effective.

#

@cursive pike It would be a little bit amusing to have a printer with a chilled bed, given that most are heated.

cursive pike
#

That could work.

Oh you don't want to do that. I noticed the car zombies yesterday at noon time -- traffic 1.5x the usual rate/density, or more.

#

(I ride a bicycle)

cursive pike
#

It's a few blocks away. I care not for traffic. Don't drive, don't have a car, don't even have a current driver's license. I live a few blocks from everything I need regularly, and there's busses for the rest.

#

I no intention of ever going back to a non-urban environment where driving is required.

Not to mention speedy delivery/courier service 😃

dusty citrus

Well they do have something called peapod in which a local grocery corporation delivers food usually seen in large grocery stores to the person's home.

Homemade mini donuts in Pike Place Market. Pike Place Brewery's burgers. Ivars. There was a chain of steakhouses -- West Lake Bar & Grill, South Lake Bar & Grill, and one other that I can't rememeber. Wednesdays they had a $5 steak and fries that was soooooo good.

#

You'd think a $5 steak would be suspect, but nope. Loss leader to get you in to drink.

Don't get me wrong, NYC food isn't bad. But it's not as cheap nor does it have as much charm & appeal as Seattle.

gray pilot
#

@grave crest Dude, your making me hungry.... ><> 😃

#

Here in Chicago we have so many choices of food. We have pizza, thin crust pizza, deep dish pizza, all-in pizza, regular pizza, cheese pizza, and oh ya, did I mention pizza?

grave crest
#

Seattle's food scene was on point when I was there.

#

On the other hand, living near NYC -- I have access to some of the best Mexican and Italian within walking distance of my apartment. And BBQ? Omglolwtfbbq.

#

Hole in the wall BBQ joint that is run by a former US Marine. No nonsense, no frills -- just amazingly good food.

#

That's just within a 5 minute drive of where I live. If I drive within 25 minutes around in NJ, then that's a plethora of options I can't even fathom.

Hop on a train to NYC. Within 35 minutes, I'm in Midtown Manhattan. Just a short subway ride away (or walk) from Korean BBQ Chicken. Legit BBQ hailing from all regions of the USA. Greek food in places that don't speak a lick of English. Ukranian 24/7 diners.

This ColorMunki color calibrator helps set the same color on multiple monitors, and is the cheapest I've ever seen it at. I bought it in 2015 @ $90. Current flash sale pricing is $70.

Just realized that you can buy Nintendo eShop gift cards with the Amazon No-Rush shipping rewards.

#

I can't tell you how many times I had value expire on the No-Rush because I didn't have an immediate need for it...

clear valley
#

Wow, just learned about the existence of this No-Rush Program

#

We don't have anything like that here in germany / austria :/

#

How high are these no-rush discounts? @grave crest

runic elbow
#

Good thing I got a working other console.

grave crest
#

@clear valley they’re pretty good. Delivery is in 3-7 days typically, and I get a dollar to use for digital goods on the Amazon website. Ebooks, digital music, digital games, etc. Just learned that extends to digital nintendo eshop gift cards...

spice moss
grave crest
#

So I accumulate the discounts....with amazon prime, there is no minimum order size. So i split up multi-item orders to get the most free digital dollar discounts.....and amazon typically rebundles the orders together for shipment.

#

I typically do most of my non grocery, non clothing shopping online - and by the nature of the beast, Amazon gets the lion’s share of my business. So those discounts come fast and furious.

spice moss
#

I got a augmented solution for those as adding camera and those neopixel dotstars what but sideways so they lights up and camera to center or design a little different

#

augmented lenses

dusty citrus
#

Amazon lately has been shipping me stuff individually on widely separated ship dates (I use their Free Shipping option). If I wanted two ship dates I'd place two orders. 😉

clear valley
#

Wow I hope this no rush thing comes to Austria / Germany in the future D;

grave crest
#

@dusty citrus Just the opposite for me -- I might place half a dozen single-item orders each on different dates [no-rush shipping], and they bundle them all together. Makes sense for their perspective, and I still get the benefits. Everyone wins. 😃

runic elbow
#

How does one take apart an Xbox 360 Fat model power brick apart?

proven olive
#

@grave crest @dusty citrus It all depends on warehouses. If you have a large warehouse nearby, it's more likely they'll have everythig and can bundle.

#

And @grave crest I'm a little surprised you don't have/use Amazon Fresh/Pantry

grave crest
#

@proven olive I buy food locally. Better prices, better selection.

#

Amazon's grocery prices are not cheap.

proven olive
#

I've never looked

#

It's not available for me

gray aspen
#

I know amazon prime's prices vary depending on supply and demand

grave crest
#

Then again, I generally stock up when something is on sale.

#

Pasta instead of being $1.50 a box, might go on sale a few times a year for $0.80 a box. So I grab a bunch. That stuff is shelf-stable for years.

#

(I don't buy years worth, but my point is I isolate myself from the fluctuation of prices by taking advantage of deals, when possible.)

proven olive
#

Ugh, it looks like I have to go out to the store. Need some M2.5 machine screws for Christmas presents

grave crest
#

....who sells M2.5 screws locally for you?

#

Because....I wish they did around me. 😃

gray aspen
#

has anyone setup iptv m3u with tvheadend?

proven olive
#

@grave crest Lowes near me has some metric stuff

#

I got some M3 screws a bit ago, but they're too big for mounting a Pi Zero

#

Online says M3 is the smallest they carry.

#

But a #3 is roughly the same size

#

Hmm. Doesn't look like they ahve those either

#

Thankfully, I'm 3D printing the cases, and have a pile of #2 screws

zealous relic
#

What are you printing cases for?

proven olive

Oh, the whole thing will be open sourced! Hardware + software.

ornate fractal
#

I /may/ want to stream it, depending on if thats alright

covert spire
#

♥️ @ open sourced

ornate fractal
#

yeah if its open source then theres definitely no need for contract

polar wraith
#

There's nothing proprietary about it at all. I deliberately want it to be replicatable (is that a word)?

covert spire
#

So much pressure . . . Release

ornate fractal
#

@tiny moat quick reminder at which sections we're seeing the pressure drop in?

dusty citrus
#

@tiny moat what's the main function of the magnetic shield -- is it to establish a physical boundary you cannot get inside of?

ornate fractal
#

@polar wraith I think the word is replicable/reproducible

polar wraith
#

There ya go. 😃

covert spire
#

“Non-factory-only” seems most technically accurate

#

Maybe that is why it’s intermittent?

#

Is it a usually reliable valve went bad?

ornate fractal
#

@tiny moat any chance you have a DAQ of any kind?

#

like an ADC or something you could plot the pressure waveform with?

#

the waveform would give you a /lot/ of info

covert spire
#

@ornate fractal _

#

lot

ornate fractal
#

I know

#

I use /this/ because im a jerk

covert spire
#

We already discussed that

ornate fractal
#

wait what?

covert spire
#

He repeated what I typed, Hahahahahahaha!

ornate fractal
#

positive slew and negative slew are the same?

#

so its floating?

#

hrrrrm

covert spire
#

Isolation time!

ornate fractal
#

why would a leak result in a floating current waveform....

#

hrrrrrm

covert spire
#

You must love it right now

ornate fractal
#

yeah pls, post a schematic maybe we can rig up some kind of digital acquisition method

covert spire
#

2 valves leaking?

#

Or at least opposing vacuums?

ornate fractal
#

no for there to be a floating result, there needs to be roughly equivalent input and output flows

dusty citrus
#

@polar wraith replicable maybe. duplicable is listed so it's a very similar model.

ornate fractal
#

k its 2 AM here now and im at my parent's house so i need to hit the hay. night all

covert spire

Only 2 am

I am also

You don’t like irritating them?

Just kidding

#

Night

ornate fractal

its holiday visitation hours and theyre very uncomfortable to be around

covert spire

Hahahahahahaha!

#

You expected it to be worse?!?!?

polar wraith
#

G'night!

covert spire
#

You have such great luck!

dusty citrus

Or just aim it at the Australian audience. 😉

covert spire
#

Japan

#

Etc

#

Wait, that is issue?

#

Serious cleaning time!

#

I am trying my best not to be overly sarcastic as I usually am

#

Well, I am used to seals/valves being that easily messed up from holding pressure

#

Although, I haven’t dealt with microscopes before

#

You plan on using spares to make 2nd?

tiny moat
polar wraith
#

Do you have a spare O-ring for the sample chamber? I mean, if it gets damaged while you're cleaning it?

covert spire
#

By sounds of it, wouldn’t hurt to have couple extras of those

#

I understand not paying for 2nd column & such

thin canopy
#

@tiny moat Time to join the family, so I'll watch the recorded version tomorrow. Glad you're back "on the air." G'night!

covert spire

Uh huh, rings ain’t a joke

#

Night

#

That’s the missing 3 pages

covert spire

I feel you’re going to need to make new manual by time you’re done with this

You can do it for me!

I’m done with the traveling

Audio is right again

That sounds overly confident

My ping should be fairly decent right now

@tiny moat video ?

dusty citrus

big red question mark where the video was

covert spire
#

Each cable you have cannot be touched or nudged

#

If does, something dies

dusty citrus
#

I think we'll reschedule my brain surgery with him. 😉

covert spire
#

Yay!

#

I have seen far worse

polar wraith
#

LOL! "I am impressed by how bad this is."

covert spire
#

Right?

#

Last one

#

Maybe?

#

This one

dusty citrus
#

The first one is 'pinched' audio. The second is only in the right channel but has a better sound (quieter though).

covert spire
#

It is at least combobulatable

dusty citrus
#

No this is the wrong audio.

covert spire
#

3rd vote?

#

Staticky scratchy audio? Or Right channel more smooth audio?

#

It’s working? Noice

dusty citrus
#

Yeah do that for five minutes with that right-only channel and we'll see if it is more effective.

covert spire
#

Be right back, I need some aspirin

#

This is why I cannot be DJ

dusty citrus
#

spanky audio.

polar wraith
#

Spanky?

covert spire
#

You seriously need audio balancer

#

That’s what he is calling the current stuff

dusty citrus
#

picks up a lot more machine noise than any of the other mics, Adam.

covert spire
#

Prior versions was better

dusty citrus
#

Nicer tone. Would do well if you were addressing this microphone in a quiet room.

covert spire
#

We can hear all of his shop, because it doesn’t have proximity filter

#

It’s meant for only quiet room

#

Shop, no good

dusty citrus
#

Yeah it's an omni.

covert spire
#

Oops

dusty citrus
#

Still I can copy him better, so far.

#

Leave this mic on for a while. I need to hear it when your back is to it.

#

That's a quiet mic.

covert spire
#

I need to stop using headsets

dusty citrus
#

It's not much louder adam

#

Leave it there for now.

covert spire
#

You just need audio balancer software

#

For your computer

dusty citrus
#

clipping just a bit. Could back it off for clarity. It's a quiet mic, though.

covert spire
#

Now ya need it again, Hahahahahahaha!

dusty citrus
#

It picks up your bass tones which makes a big difference in readability. Easier to understand you.

covert spire
#

Check audio after you zoom

dusty citrus
#

He's opening up the sardines for a late snack.

covert spire
#

Late late night

#

3 A.M. here

polar wraith
#

Oi! It's only midnight out here.

dusty citrus
#

Yep. 08:00z (and I'm on NYC / Boston time)

covert spire
#

Well, yea, 3 hour difference to Pacific

#

Not impressed by how badly designed it is?

polar wraith
#

Yeah, when you pulled it out I assumed the gate valve was solid.

covert spire
#

It did appear as one piece

#

Then cleans it, & seems are found

#

Would be nice to know why

#

It doesn’t appear to be

#

They still had to put a groove for the o ring

#

Was it an “oopsy”?

#

Because it would seem to be less machining to just put grooves than as you said

#

I put things like this in “Special kind of engineering”

dusty citrus
#

Have no idea what that sardine can is for.

covert spire
#

I didn’t say bad engineering, just Special, because it still works

polar wraith
#

Would thermal mass have anything to do with it?

#

Or inertia of a solid plate

covert spire
#

It’s same material

#

Hmmm . . .

#

Audio!

#

Still right channel

#

Nah, it’s same

dusty citrus
#

Audio has been readable.

covert spire
#

I’m catching choppy a bit, but it is combobulatable

#

“I’ll take it apart more”

#

Basically no time frame to fix this, but it will be fixed!

dusty citrus
#

@tiny moat Make sure the registration points in the right spot.

covert spire
#

That didn’t work

dusty citrus
#

He's building a Dalek. I see right through him.

covert spire
#

Shhh!

#

We all know, but it’s still a ‘secret’

dusty citrus
#

Does he get to keep this one or is it in the shop for service?

covert spire
#

To keep

#

This is his toy

dusty citrus
#

It's a good looking unit. Would do well with a general audience -- looks sciency and clean.

covert spire
#

Oh deer, he’s talking about scary level of rebuild there

#

Please no opening the tank

#

Totally is!

#

Discoloration from dirt

#

Impressed by that?

#

When it came from factory

#

How did you get 2 black cleans?!?!?

dusty citrus
#

That is rather dirty isn't it.

covert spire
#

Forget cleaning cloth, time for serious scrub

#

Ummm . . .

#

Break time for cleaning?!?!?

#

That’s going to take a while to clean

#

That is bad

#

Probably from dirty

dusty citrus
#

You can't say "I've seen it all" until you have. 😉

covert spire
#

It looks like it needs that

#

Always a new one

#

You missed when he found issue on closing gate o ring

#

& the closing gate

dusty citrus
#

I didn't miss it. I didn't know what that part was called.

covert spire
#

Ah

dusty citrus
#

that's the sardine can

covert spire
#

Of course

#

You’re one who called it that

#

Ok, sardine can

dusty citrus
#

audio is clipping a lot but the sound pressure is up and so is intelligibility over the first part of the stream.

covert spire
#

Now he’s cleaning the old grill

#

Well, they done a fine job on the old grill

dusty citrus
#

conductive carbon paint

covert spire
#

Yea, that sounds like it would make it worse

#

They like the color?

dusty citrus
#

Had something to do witih X-rays

covert spire
#

Maybe some left over from when they were painting other things?

dusty citrus
#

xray spectroscopy

covert spire
#

Maybe thorough on this one?

dusty citrus
#

They had some carbon paint laying around already because it is used sparingly elsewhere on an SEM issued by this particular manufacturer.

covert spire
#

More dissecting!

#

Lmao

#

Good programmers

dusty citrus
#

OSU on the OSD

covert spire
#

Eggzactly

dusty citrus
#

Is this the part where I say don't forget the registration mark

#

Don't let the fleshy part of the Dalek loose. They're hard to get back in.

covert spire
#

That’s when he stops taking apart, & when he start reversing

#

I thought that is why the plunger?

#

I will laugh if next time we see this microscope, he has a plunger duct taped to it

dusty citrus
#

You got him saying 'plunger' 😉

covert spire
#

I missed that

#

& this is time I must take my exit left

dusty citrus
#

I have to catch a few Zzz's of sleep now.

covert spire
#

(Opposite direction of audio)

#

Before I get too silly

dusty citrus
#

You are too late for that.

#

Crossed that boundary a while ago. 😉

covert spire
#

& I do need zzzz’s for work

#

Oh, I know, that was before I got on here tho

#

Sweet!

#

Party stage can rock now!

dusty citrus
#

Thanks for including us Adam. It is interesting to participate.

covert spire
#

Mainly interesting I partly understood what on earth happens in a microscope

#

He makes it look too easy

#

I still can’t touch one tho

#

Legit biasism, kept my interest for a bit

#

Well, night all

polar wraith
#

G'night!

#

Yup!

#

I'll be here as long as you're running. Trying to figure out why I'm getting flash memory read errors on multiple ESP32 Feathers....

#

Nah, don't fuss with it. You're good with the streaming audio.

#

What's the wire loop attached to the stage?

#

Aaaah, ok, makes sense. I shoulda thought of that.....

#

I have an IMU for the rover. The feather reads the IMU and inserts quaternion data into the master controller's MQTT topic....

polar wraith
#

Nope. Getting really annoyed. I'll probably stop fussing with it and watch the stream more closely.

#

YES!!!!

#

They're very cool! I really like them, and they'll look fabulous on metal.

#

I don't. Maybe you could send a set to me and I'll pick four out? Then paypal you the cash?

#

Cool!

#

Yup, saw it.

#

Ok. I'll browse through that Thursday. I have a bunch of stuff coming for the rover tomorrow, so I'll be totally distracted after AaE.

#

Got it! Thanks!

#

That doesn't sound good....

#

Nope. Forgot all about it. I'll set a reminder.

#

Um, horrible audio buzzing suddenly.

#

No buzzing now.

#

Yep, you're back!

#

LOL. Installing the IDE on a Raspberry Pi to see if I can get it loaded that way.

#

I did!

#

Dunno what parafilm is, but I saw it. And someone got really excited that you had tweeted about it. 😃

#

Oh cool. Lab grade saran wrap. 😃

#

Well, I was paraphrasing. Stretches 200% and becomes more supple with temperature? Sounds really handy!

#

Brute force doesn't sound like an ideal answer with a delicate instrument....

#

Alexa Daniels you say?

#

Cool! I'll go look it up.

#

YAY!!!

#

Yeah, there is that!

#

Yep, will do.

#

Good night, Adam! Thanks for streaming!

sleek urchin
#

New watch day!

sleek urchin
#

not a very electronic watch in this case

#

actually about as non-electronic as you can get in a wrist watch

abstract violet
#

@sleek urchin is it a sun dial watch 😃

sleek urchin
#

heh, a little useless around here

#

self winding mechanical movement wrist watch

abstract violet
#

oh cool 😄 is it see through

sleek urchin
#

yeah, I specifically got the skeleton model. so most of the face plate is cut out, and there's a window on the back

abstract violet
#

show 😄

sleek urchin
#

can see the escapement flailing back and forth

#

and, the kicker..

#

total shipped price... $14.

#

Because. China.

abstract violet
#

nice! 😃 not sure what an escapement is 😮

sleek urchin
#

it's a little V-shaped hook that goes back and forth on a single direction toothed gear, only allowing it to advance one click with each movement

covert spire
#

Show it?

sleek urchin
#

trying to see if someone else has a video made, because I only have a mediocre cellphone camera

#

and these are pretty fine details

covert spire
#

Reasons I use phone I do

sleek urchin
#

the strap is pretty awful, but I kind of figured it would be

covert spire
#

You can replace that

sleek urchin
#

yeah, that's why I got this one

#

I figure if the mechanism is good, I should just get a new strap

#

from what I've read, it's pretty decent

#

~1 minute every 4 days

#

Obviously terrible compared to a quartx watch

covert spire
#

speaking of Chinese, need to get screw driver . . .

#

My best watch had -1 minute every 2-3 years

sleek urchin
#

heh, this obviously isn't about super precision

#

mechanical watches are just plain neat

covert spire
#

Well, that one was digital, the best mechanical I've seen is on time after over 20 years

#

It's a clock from 1920's

#

or 1930's

sleek urchin
#

heh, pretty impressive

#

must have incredibly low drift

covert spire
#

It does, last time it was touched was 1991 (at least) to do time change to EDT

#

It's on EST

#

We pulled out cell phones to compare, & it was still correct

#

So, quote of family became "You can set your phone's time by that clock"

sleek urchin
#

heh

#

well, for $14...

#

I think it's a pretty nice watch

covert spire
#

It is

#

I think you can get decent leather band for it for that price

sleek urchin
#

heh, a decent leather band will cost as much as the watch

covert spire
#

Pretty much

sleek urchin
#

but yeah, that's the plan, a decent band

covert spire
#

but, it'd more than double it's worth

sleek urchin
#

and, if this thing fails, or gets to be very poor at time keeping... well, $14 is cheaper than servicing it

#

it's kind of like chinese fountain pens..

#

you can get some very reasonable options for not that much

#

there are also insanely expensive options..

covert spire
#

I'm beyond picky about pens now

sleek urchin
#

Heh, I prefer fountain pens, and I found a few nice Chinese ones to work with for now

dusty citrus
#

Seems odd they found a market for that watch.

sleek urchin
#

a market for mechanical watches?

#

sure, a quartz watch can be much cheaper, and more accurate

dusty citrus
#

At that price, yeah. How is it economical to sell it for 14 bux?

sleek urchin
#

It's China! labour is cheap, equipment is cheap, materials are cheap

#

I don't imagine this would be a super precision milled time keeping device like the $12k watches

#

most likely stamped out parts

dusty citrus
#

I can think of two things: supply chain dried up for watch batteries, or b) they're punishing people by making them build watches and sell them below cost.

sleek urchin
#

Oh, quartz watches and digital watches are even cheaper

dusty citrus
#

Shouldn't be possible to sell something for so little money and be in business the next year to do it again.

sleek urchin
#

economy is just different in china

#

not to mention the sheer availability of manufacturing capabilities

dusty citrus
#

Just seems entirely fictional.

sleek urchin
#

a big point is quality control

#

could order 10 of these watches

#

1 might break out of the box

#

3 might be entirely inaccurate

#

4 might be comesetically damaged. and 2 might be in perfect shape.

dusty citrus
#

Well I suppose somebody wants that 14 dollars pretty badly.

sleek urchin
#

It's basically gambling on ordering from china

#

Same reason that while you can order cheap modules from china, it can be a headache

#

whereas a place like Adafruit may cost significantly more, reflecting the manufacturing, but also the support and QC they supply

covert spire
sleek urchin
#

if this watch breaks, I don't even imagine I'd bother trying to get warrenty repairs or anything (shipping to china would be more than the cost of the watch)

dusty citrus
#

I appreciate your insights. I'm still not there, by a long margin. I would really like to know how these things are possible (where the hidden rate of exchange is, might be a way to ask this better).

covert spire
#

There is a model of Nixie watch from US, but it's enclosed, & as prior said about quality control

dusty citrus
#

got audio on S&T

sleek urchin
#

Really, a lot comes down to costs... China is not an expensive country to live in, until you get to large cities (which are stupidly expensive)

#

government regulations, currency manipulations, environmental standards, health standards, etc, etc

covert spire
#

bbl, s&t time

covert spire
#

My version of ‘Anti-static bracelet’

proven olive
#

Copper chain glove?

covert spire
#

Yeap

#

From house electrical wire that was tossed out

proven olive
#

Nice!

#

Just punch the static into submission

covert spire
#

I figured if static can get through that much metal, I’m no longer concerned about the electronics

#

Also, as per usual, has my own style to it

sleek urchin
#

just need to ground your gauntlet now =p

covert spire
#

I found some wire to use for that

#

Some stranded wire

#

Still stripping more wire to finish it off

sleek urchin
#

although an important safety feature of anti statis wrist straps is the resistor..

#

they have a 1 M Ohm resistor between the strap and ground

covert spire
#

@proven olive I seen why you asked about 1-axis, would it be possible to program it to not respond to X-axis?

sleek urchin
#

prevents you from conducting much current.. enough to bleed off static though

covert spire
#

A resister can be soldered in

proven olive
#

@covert spire Easily

#

But, honestly? I love the way the single-axis sticks feel.

covert spire
#

Ah

#

@sleek urchin I haven’t seen spot to put a resister in some of the cheaper models tho

sleek urchin
#

sometimes just due to contact resistance as designed

#

often embedded

#

but the cheap ones really just rely on high resistance contacts to the skin

covert spire
#

Ah

shadow oyster
#

@proven olive If you're going for the feel, it may be better to use a 2 axis joysitck and build a physical guide for it to travel in.

covert spire
#

Well, my high resistance is my work boots

#

Actually, what he wants is “Center-set switch”

#

You can push it up or down, & it forces to middle, but it is a switch

#

Auto-parts stores sell those

proven olive
#

So long as it's analog, not a simple on/off

covert spire
#

It’s a “on-off-on”

#

It is able to do forward or reverse

proven olive
#

Not what I want at all, then, unfortunately.

covert spire
#

As each “on” is opposite

#

And can’t get anymore analog

proven olive
#

I sold boating stuff for 5 years, I'm familiar with such switches.

covert spire
#

Ah

proven olive
#

They're really useful for some things, just not what I want for this application

covert spire
#

The ones I dealt with are simpler than boating

proven olive
#

Oh, yeah.

#

Boating has to deal with stuff like water.

#

Makes it a whole lot more expensive.

covert spire
#

Oh, I know that comparisons

#

Well, that’s another discussion

proven olive
#

Indeed.

#

My time spent selling boat stuff convinced me: Never get a boat. I cannot afford it

covert spire
#

One thing I learned, it’s same in cars about warranty

#

So, if I want one, I must build it

#

Anyways . . . (Before I see my wallet go empty) otherwise, I don’t know what to say for old school RC joysticks

covert spire
#

I seen one that is 2-axis on Adafruit about same size

proven olive
#

Yep.

covert spire
#

Ok, MicroHex, what wattage?

Does anyone know any kind of Smart RGB LED Thats similar to Dotstar LEDs but larger in size as NeoPixels.....?

cursive pike
tender nimbus
#

@cursive pike Yeah

#

But I want something bigger in size.......

sleek urchin
#

5050 LED packages are already considered quite alrge

#

I don't think there are any LEDs that you could solder that are larger than that

#

you'd be moving to RGB lamps at that point

#

and those don't have control built in (unless you buy those SmartHUE bulbs or something)

cursive pike
#

You can get the larger through hole neopixels

#

@grave crest My panavise & arms finally arrived yesterday. What a joy. Scared the cat the first time he saw it, though.

@grave crest It does look somewhat menancing with those arms!

grave crest

@cursive pike It's one of my favorite tools. I hope it serves you well 😃

okay, as neat as the 3d printed RPi cases can be

hard to beat an injection molded NESPi case

grave crest
#

Good news -- found a SNES Classic in a [very] rural Walmart! Bad news, a 50amp breaker panel (installed in the 70s) just disintegrated on a neighbor's home. I'm helping my electician Dad fix this -- it's only 12 degrees outside and falling. Oh, it's windy too.

sleek urchin
#

SNES Classic is nice

#

I've put mine back int eh box for now

#

like my switch, I just haven't had time for it

covert spire
#

I rather convert dead PS1 into pi case for retro gaming

#

Which is why 3D printing is so awesome, way more options

sleek urchin
#

heh, well, there's enough of a market that people are making these injection molded mini nes cases

grave crest
#

I wasn't too keen on the idea of the NES classic. Controller form factor wasn't the best, nor was the selection of games appealing (good, yes. Just not my favorites). But the SNES was, to me, the golden age of gaming.

sleek urchin
#

well, it's not like the NES Classic was trying to improve on the original <_<

#

original controllers sucked too

covert spire
#

Well, there is popularity to NES, because of nostalgic

sleek urchin
#

it was an amazingly well selling console in the early to mid 80's =p

covert spire
#

But for lesser fan base like me to PS1, given choice

sleek urchin
#

PS1 was also 2 generations later

covert spire
#

2?

#

You mean PS2?

sleek urchin
#

yes. NES generation, then SNES generation, PS1 didn't come around to N64 generation

#

PS1 came out late 1995

covert spire
#

Did PS1 last that short of time?

sleek urchin
#

Nintendo 64 came out late 1996

#

SNES came out mid 1991

#

so, yes, the PS1 is two game console generations later than the NES

covert spire
#

Hmmm . . . 1994 per wiki

Although, something’s off

all the dates I mentioned were considering NA releases

I remember playing PS2 in 1998

didn't come out until 2000

but sure, I can appreciate using an old console

#

I just don't like hacking up old hardware just to shove a RPi into it

Dead one for reason, I rather save a case from a non-working one from landfill

For where I live, it’d be really bad idea to toss a good system

I do want to try to fit a Mini ITX PC build in a dead original NES...

I've made a terrible mistake

#

My daughter woke shortly after I went to bed

#

😰

polar wraith
#

@indigo jetty That's funny, I was just about to open KiCad and start working on a design, and it's 0145....

indigo jetty
#

Consider me ghost of Christmas future, know you are about to make a terrible mistake @polar wraith

polar wraith
#

ROTFL!

#

@indigo jetty I stopped. I realized I have to do my power budget (so I know how many batteries I need) before designing the power systems interface board!

indigo jetty
#

It was my first time using it last night

#

Pretty fun

#

Kinda unintuitive! @stuck moth sent on a good video though

polar wraith
#

Can you share the video link?

#

And now rather than doing a power budget I've concluded I can just put a voltage/ammeter outboard of the two power converters and directly measure the draw. 😃 Cheating, but it'll work.

#

So off at Adafruit shopping for meters. Yes, I can get them cheaper from China, but this'll take two days rather than three weeks.

tender nimbus
#

Which one is better KiCAD Eagle or EasyEDA

proven olive
#

@tender nimbus Depends on how you use it. I, personally, would give a slight edge to Eagle for the simple fact that it is an industry standard.

tender nimbus
#

@proven olive I have to same opinion I have tried others but it was kind of hard to use....... Other ones

proven olive
#

KiCad is awful to use, personally. I've never tried EasyEDA, but I have used PCBWeb. Decently easy but lacks huge amounts of features.

tender nimbus
#

@proven olive I think you should maybe try EasyEDA if you prototype a lot cause they kind off directly connect you to the PCB and Components Supplier and the PCB prices are also bang for buck

#

And PCBWeb does look nice seems like have to try

proven olive
#

I largely get my components from DigiKey, and my prototype boards from PCBWay. $5 for 10 boards, plus $25 for shipping - $30 and they're at my door less than a week later

tender nimbus
#

$25 for shipping?

#

That would be a bit of pain.......

#

By the way you were saying PCBWeb doesnt have some features....... Which ones.....?

stark peak
#

honestly as a hobbyist the main turn off on learning Eagle is that it's licensed per year AND it's propeitary to boot

#

that's an uninformed opinion though because I know how bad open source UI can get if there's not money behind it

runic elbow
tender nimbus
#

@stark peak Thats also true.......

#

@runic elbow Is that andons setup....?

runic elbow
tender nimbus
#

Thats a really good setup cause I can use one for discord one for youtube one for eagle one for coding one for github one for facebook and one for maybe other stuffs

stark peak
#

IIRC diminishing returns for extra monitors productivity wise has been demonstrated from studies

tender nimbus
#

What....?

stark peak
#

I forget the source but after two monitors the productivity increases kinda fall away

#

I would assume at some point it starts decreasing after you're unable to pay water and food bills in order to afford the number of monitors and video cards necessary

tender nimbus
#

You mean if we have more than 2 monitors it affects the perfomance.......?

stark peak
#

ostensibly yes, although studies are apparently funded by companies who financially benefit from monitor sales

proven olive
#

I don't actively use most of them. And my monitors have been upgraded since that picturen but layout is the same

tender nimbus
#

Don't know why its really hard to understand your sentences 😅 @stark peak

stark peak
#

Sorry, I tend to be rambly and aren't exactly as awake as I would like to be

proven olive
#

@tender nimbus Are you a native English speaker, or is it a second language for you?

tender nimbus
#

@proven olive but still i really lik your monitors

#

🖥

proven olive
#

I currently only have four functioning. The one to the far left I use for my Pis when they need testing, so not set up on main computer.

tender nimbus
#

Oh..... I knew you had each use for each monitor

proven olive
#

Prime is in the center. Right/bottom is social media - Twitter/facebook/etc - It will get used for reference lookups and/or game info depending on what I'm doing

tender nimbus
#

You knw i want to be so lik u guys

proven olive
#

Left/bottom is Discord. It's part of how I keep track of here

#

Top/center is E-mail and my music player. Not something I need to actively keep track of

tender nimbus
#

Hmm..... Thats nice......

proven olive
#

Top/right died a few months ago and I haven't replaced it. I have the replacement but I have to shuffle monitos around a lot. Top/left is ancient and dieing so i have it disconnected as well

#

Oh, and two of my monitors don't have VESA mounts so I need to buy or make adapters.

#

So I can mount them properly

tender nimbus
#

I think you should really spend on weekend to rearrange all of them and keep them sorted

proven olive
#

It's one of those things that's just always a bit lower in priority

tender nimbus
#

For me its one of those things in my high priority list and makes me feel really good

#

😅

#

Can u post a pic of your whole place......

#

Please........ @proven olive

proven olive
#

Nah, that's about the whole fancy bit.

tender nimbus
#

Can u pls post a pic........

proven olive
#

It's nothing special. Plus, my room requires a lot of cleaning, straigtening, and rearranging before it's fit to show anyone. And my work area is some things on top of a small rickety table that needs to be replaced.

tender nimbus
#

😂

#

Same as me......

#

Thats one of the reasons why i dont do show and tell

proven olive
#

Getting my workspace improved is one od my priorities for the new year. Then I can do S&T

tender nimbus
#

I think I should also do the same.......

#

Hmm.......

#

By the way what are you specialized in...?

proven olive
#

What do you mean by specialized?

tender nimbus
#

Hardware or Software

proven olive
#

Hardware, definitely.

tender nimbus
#

Yeah......!

proven olive
#

I don't particularly enjoy doing software, but I can do it passably.

#

Usually to the extent that it gets my hardware working.

tender nimbus
#

We r kind of similar in taste

#

#

You are genuinely someone who can help me a lot

proven olive
#

Perhaps. I'm not an expert in everything. I'm only starting to learn Eagle, and my free time isn't the greatest at the time being.

tender nimbus
#

I am really good at Eagle

#

But I am not good at Software perspective and at Datasheets

#

So you work atAdafruit........?

proven olive
#

I do not. I would like to eventually, though.

tender nimbus
#

Hmm.....

proven olive
#

My day job is working in a bakery at a grocery store.

tender nimbus
#

By the way you are master punner....?
