@cursive pike This might be of interest to you: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA9renIgK3NbHPLX9FmUpkOtYpuNlv2A0
@severe glen That goes in a bit of a different direction. My idea is to automate the tedious job of decorating dozens of identical cookies.
Homer Price and the Doughnut Machine
I find myself toying with the idea of putting a camera on it to snap a pic of the cookie on the bed, analyze it to adjust the geometry to line up exactly with the cookie . Another idea is to have a jig that holds the cookie in place. Seeing as I am likely going to print custom cookie cutters, printing a jig is an easy next step. Or I could just start with round cookies 😃
MVP is decorating round cookies.
(Minimum Viable Product)
Ah, but then there has to be a way to ensure the cookie doesn't rotate.
Hmm... there's a ton of depth to this.
cookie glue?
What @dusty citrus is referring to is corn syrup. We use it at work for sticking stuff to packaging ALL the time.
A glass bed, put some corn syrup down, and put the cookie down. Wait a little bit, and the cookie shouldn't move.
If you chill the bed, it'll be even more effective.
@cursive pike It would be a little bit amusing to have a printer with a chilled bed, given that most are heated.
That could work.
Yippey, my students are finishing the last exam of the year in the next hour...
I hope I can show up to show and tell....
(they always schedule classes for me on the same schedule 😦 )
Royal icing is also great food glue.
I took a bunch of Wilton cake decorating classes years ago.
I've used in the past a paste with corn starch.
Don't add sugar to it or you'll make it into a dessert... yum
Introduction: Beginning in Insider Build 17063, you’ll be able to use the unix socket (AF_UNIX) address family on Windows to communicate between Win32 processes. Unix sockets allow inter-process communication (IPC) between processes on the same machine. Overview: Support for the unix socket has existed both in BSD and Linux for the longest time, but, not...
@fair summit so that is also in new update
@spice moss I saw that -- that's impressive.
@fair summit now that terminals comes to store what use WSL so now the team can focus make the WSL better

Whew... adafruit & amazon spoils us... just got home from a pre-xmas dinner run to the market.
Oh you don't want to do that. I noticed the car zombies yesterday at noon time -- traffic 1.5x the usual rate/density, or more.
(I ride a bicycle)
It's a few blocks away. I care not for traffic. Don't drive, don't have a car, don't even have a current driver's license. I live a few blocks from everything I need regularly, and there's busses for the rest.
I no intention of ever going back to a non-urban environment where driving is required.
Not to mention speedy delivery/courier service 😃
Well they do have something called peapod in which a local grocery corporation delivers food usually seen in large grocery stores to the person's home.
So I could do rural easily.
@stuck moth btw. the wandering goose in seattle has some pretty tasty southern fare!
nice, starred it. I don't get to capitol hill much though
😄
So I attepted to get Open Arena on the Windows 2000 machine. It didn't work.
It tells me that "Freeaddrinfo" couldn't be located in the DLL library "WS2_32.DLL"
Man, I miss some of the food from seattle
Does Ivars still have a place down on the waterfront? Their happy hour food specials were no joke.
(this was 2007-2008. so I'd imagine a lot has changed since then)
@grave crest yep. still there. and molly moons in wallingford and u district now.
@ancient rivet i really love the seattle food scene :3 and recently ive noticed more japanese shops!
Homemade mini donuts in Pike Place Market. Pike Place Brewery's burgers. Ivars. There was a chain of steakhouses -- West Lake Bar & Grill, South Lake Bar & Grill, and one other that I can't rememeber. Wednesdays they had a $5 steak and fries that was soooooo good.
You'd think a $5 steak would be suspect, but nope. Loss leader to get you in to drink.
Don't get me wrong, NYC food isn't bad. But it's not as cheap nor does it have as much charm & appeal as Seattle.
@grave crest Dude, your making me hungry.... ><> 😃
Here in Chicago we have so many choices of food. We have pizza, thin crust pizza, deep dish pizza, all-in pizza, regular pizza, cheese pizza, and oh ya, did I mention pizza?
Seattle's food scene was on point when I was there.
On the other hand, living near NYC -- I have access to some of the best Mexican and Italian within walking distance of my apartment. And BBQ? Omglolwtfbbq.
gets a mop for the drool again.
Hole in the wall BBQ joint that is run by a former US Marine. No nonsense, no frills -- just amazingly good food.
That's just within a 5 minute drive of where I live. If I drive within 25 minutes around in NJ, then that's a plethora of options I can't even fathom.
Hop on a train to NYC. Within 35 minutes, I'm in Midtown Manhattan. Just a short subway ride away (or walk) from Korean BBQ Chicken. Legit BBQ hailing from all regions of the USA. Greek food in places that don't speak a lick of English. Ukranian 24/7 diners.
Street carts of the best Halal Food known to mankind.
@gray pilot Hungry yet?
@grave crest Starving....
Ok, that's it. I'm running out to Portilo's to get a Polish saugage. See ya.... ><>
Seattle: Serious Pie.
The Pine Box on what I believe is the edge of Capitol Hill (on the downtown side, nearish Pike)
A bar in a ex-funeral home. And they went with the motif to the max.
Totally random -- if anyone uses multiple monitors in their daily workflow, you may notice that the colors don't always match up between them. This ColorMunki color calibrator helps set the same color on multiple monitors, and is the cheapest I've ever seen it at. I bought it in 2015 @ $90. Current flash sale pricing is $70.
[not a referral link -- takes you directly to product.]
It's Mac and Windows compatible (I've used it on Sierra and Win7 with no issues).
@dusty citrus chicago is a fun city! I went up the sears tower and through all the museums!
and a deep dish from chicago is pretty awesome and the green river dyed during st patricks
test
@abstract violet Chicago, is it? Um, only been there once or twice. I remember going bumper to bumper on the Interstate through downtown in a blizzard, boxed it. White knuckling it, the driver (not me) was.
@dusty citrus where the giant chrome bean resides
We didn't stop /in/ to see the Windy City. It was in our way (which was Denver from NYC area).
@dusty citrus crazy long drive!
I drove straight through from New Mexico to at least Wheeling, W VA if not Connecticut, with just one catnap in a Rest Area. I think the Wheeling stopover was on the return trip. I was about 22 yrs old.
test
@gray aspen I can't comment on how effective it is for printer calibration -- there are probably better & more professional options out there. But for just calibrating monitors between each other, it's awesome. Does B&H ship overseas?
Yeah apparently
Pre paying customs and duty by their calculations makes it not worth it
😦
some seasonal music, perhaps?
A classic song from "Christmas In The Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album," performed by C-3PO, R2-D2, and chorus.
.....is that a star wars christmas album? Generally Star Wars + Christmas ends poorly (re: Star Wars Christmas Special).
....really? Surprised the bot didn't outright ban me for mentioning the "Star Wars Christmas Special".
yes, that's a Star Wars Christmas Album
produced 1980
it's just as sappy as you'd think
Better than the special
but just as bad as christmas music tends to be'
If you'd like some instrumental Christmas music to study/work/program/solder/hack/make to: https://youtu.be/PDZAmsA8Ck8
@abstract violet @dusty citrus Yeah, Chicago is fun. I lived there for about 6 years before moving back to Canada (about a year ago). Deep dish can be pretty awesome... but as the folks in NYC will likely atest... it's not pizza 😃
It's something someone made while they were thinking about pizza. /george_carlinism
bibab.cooking supper
@abstract violet @dusty citrus But you can't touch Chicago for hot dogs... even if they shy away from ketchup.
@dusty citrus as John Stewart said "it's not pizza, it's caserole"
@dusty citrus I ordered pizza for supper.
you are killing me. I really wanted a pizza tonight.
@cursive pike oh cool! 😃 and YUM
@cursive pike and speaking of hot dogs + ketchup , this is one to try https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Currywurst
@abstract violet With a brat, that sounds pretty good.
Currywurst is my favorite wursten! Train stations usually have the best ones...
Erect the aluminum poles, ready the feats of strength, and prepare for the airing of grievances. Happy Festivus to all.
Just realized that you can buy Nintendo eShop gift cards with the Amazon No-Rush shipping rewards.
I can't tell you how many times I had value expire on the No-Rush because I didn't have an immediate need for it...
Wow, just learned about the existence of this No-Rush Program
We don't have anything like that here in germany / austria :/
How high are these no-rush discounts? @grave crest
@clear valley they’re pretty good. Delivery is in 3-7 days typically, and I get a dollar to use for digital goods on the Amazon website. Ebooks, digital music, digital games, etc. Just learned that extends to digital nintendo eshop gift cards...
So I accumulate the discounts....with amazon prime, there is no minimum order size. So i split up multi-item orders to get the most free digital dollar discounts.....and amazon typically rebundles the orders together for shipment.
I typically do most of my non grocery, non clothing shopping online - and by the nature of the beast, Amazon gets the lion’s share of my business. So those discounts come fast and furious.
I got a augmented solution for those as adding camera and those neopixel dotstars what but sideways so they lights up and camera to center or design a little different
augmented lenses
Amazon lately has been shipping me stuff individually on widely separated ship dates (I use their Free Shipping option). If I wanted two ship dates I'd place two orders. 😉
Wow I hope this no rush thing comes to Austria / Germany in the future D;
@dusty citrus Just the opposite for me -- I might place half a dozen single-item orders each on different dates [no-rush shipping], and they bundle them all together. Makes sense for their perspective, and I still get the benefits. Everyone wins. 😃
How does one take apart an Xbox 360 Fat model power brick apart?
@grave crest @dusty citrus It all depends on warehouses. If you have a large warehouse nearby, it's more likely they'll have everythig and can bundle.
And @grave crest I'm a little surprised you don't have/use Amazon Fresh/Pantry
@proven olive I buy food locally. Better prices, better selection.
Amazon's grocery prices are not cheap.
I know amazon prime's prices vary depending on supply and demand
Then again, I generally stock up when something is on sale.
Pasta instead of being $1.50 a box, might go on sale a few times a year for $0.80 a box. So I grab a bunch. That stuff is shelf-stable for years.
(I don't buy years worth, but my point is I isolate myself from the fluctuation of prices by taking advantage of deals, when possible.)
Ugh, it looks like I have to go out to the store. Need some M2.5 machine screws for Christmas presents
has anyone setup iptv m3u with tvheadend?
@grave crest Lowes near me has some metric stuff
I got some M3 screws a bit ago, but they're too big for mounting a Pi Zero
Online says M3 is the smallest they carry.
But a #3 is roughly the same size
Hmm. Doesn't look like they ahve those either
Thankfully, I'm 3D printing the cases, and have a pile of #2 screws
What are you printing cases for?
Pi Zeros. I'm making some neat lights for my family. They'll be internet connected with a bunch of DotStar-equivalents. Each one will be able to change their light and have it change on all the other ones.
Niiice
Wish I had the time to go out and do cool projects like that
Ah well
I only have the time to do the odd project on my printer now and then 😀
Good point
It's break for me, so I'm just printing a Menger Sponge as a Christmas present right now
I've had an idea that maybe I'll try out next year - printing little translucent tardises to put over the lights on a string of Christmas lights. I suppose it would be best to use LED lights to avoid issues with heat.
My latest video got demonetized, I've no idea how or why. Its literally the most innocent video you'll see!

Happy holidays discord fam!
Merry Christmas
@indigo jetty WHA!!!?
@abstract violet I know!
@indigo jetty Look into the controversy with Y--tube changing its algorithm to only monetize only the videos they think are more suitable for their advertisers. I think that marketing strategy spilled over into Patreon affecting that they only promote or want the higher earners.
The worst thing about Christmas trees is the way they shed. Have a great holiday to those who celebrate at this time of the year. And happy hacking to all.
Merry Christmas
Same to you
We got a slightly white Christmas this morning in NJ, then it rained a little and messed it up a bit, but there's still some white left.
We interrupt this chat for a PSA:

@ocean sigil Where in NH are you? I'm in Nottingham.
I’m in Durham. We are neighbors!
One question: What on earth is Windows Gold Edition?
Windows XP Gold Edition is a modified version of Windows XP made in 2016 with updated services packs
Is it official?
no
Oh, ok. Thanks for the information.
you're welcome
Wow, Windows 7 gold looks really nice.
My god, I didn't know there were so many different modified versions of Windows.
Oh... oh yes.
An interesting (IMO) video on Christmas lights and how old school analog blinkers work: https://youtu.be/zeOw5MZWq24

Would anyone be interested if I did a stream tomorrow? I have a warm-enough shop now and minimal crazynes going on...
Do it
Oooh, warm!
@tiny moat You should do a stream, but have a little picture-in-picture of just your pellet stove.
@tiny moat Cozy! A clean, well lighted, and warm place for the SEMs. I'd be interested in watching a stream tomorrow.
Well, unless something entirely unpredictable happens, it looks like I am going to be doing a stream!
will someone come check #help-with-projects ?
Pelle(t stove), The Conqueror
@vestal garnet
hey
My family doesn't have a history of acting "civil" in arguments, something im hoping to change
Needless to say, they are having arguments over extremely petty items
That and I've had to stop violence multiple times
Suprisingly, from both parties
that sucks man
I mean, it's mostly not a problem as of late, as my dad moved out
Because even though I bought it, I bought it as a kid, and I technically have no legal right to it.
ahh
Besides, it was shared anyway
He does buy us groceries, mostly reliably, so I take it as a small tradeoff
ok, that is nice
Everyone in my family gets way too emotional, and make terrible decisions because of that
I'm the "ugly duckling", by not being very emotional, and it's caused it's own issues
Mainly because they expect me to respond emotionally and I don't
I know that it's basically irrelevant that I share this, but as of current, there aren't many people around my age range who share interest in this field
This is basically the backstory of why I like tech
@naive iris we're happy to have you here! Would love to see your projects on show and tell
😄 I appreciate your openness too. Sounds like things are improving for you
If you're in the position of seeing a negative behavior in a family member, more or less as an anthropologist might see it, hey, that's a win.
I see the "bot" just told me to watch my language. Fine. But I will NOT watch videos sent to my phone as notifications from Adafruit regarding political garbage. I left Sparkfun after years of being a loyal patron only because they got political. Please, do not do this Adafruit. I, for one, will not tolorate it.
I have got the classic PC connected to an internet modem. Time for online experimentation.
Connection was a success.
Can't even connect to google.
I can't get to the Opera website.
Good god, I can't do anything.
@gray pilot I don't tknow what you're referring to, but I agree that this should be a "safe space" as it were, where politics is left outside and we techies are united by our love of tech despite any political differences we might have.
Its not who you vote for, its who you hack the voting machines to vote for
I have no idea how to set up an Outlook Express account.
Stream is temporarily on hold as I figure out how Comcast messed up my internet
Dear lord. It has begun.
Samsung Galaxy Tab E Lite: Best tablet ever. I can actually delete pre-installed apps I don't want!
Stream starting soon!
link?
@Confedyank Coming soon
Stream is live! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9gcqXsOGHY
Can you get to it?
Thank you, good bench check on my computer, Hahahahahahaha!
It seems to stream decently at 1080p
You still streaming?
Offline temporarily, I think.
Its a new streaming setup, so I am still getting used to it
I’m no where near decent enough set up to do stream from my computer
I need better computer, faster internet, & a camera
I'd have to use representational puppets.
I want to 3D print a robot to be my representor
Should be back now
@tiny moat Yes. "The Stream Will Start Shortly" and music.
Music is okay... 😉
... and voice!
Please move mic to you
@tiny moat Sounds like you're on your computer's mic, not the wireless.
Oh, that seems correct, not getting wireless mic audio
It drops off when you turn away from the keyboard.
We can hear where you face now
Always needs tweaking, I’m sure you can fix it
Turn to side & test?
Audio dropped & video is . . . ?
Fun learning curve
Still sounds like the computer mic.
No idea what you're talking about. No evidence of motion or audio.
Now
Ugh
His streaming just dropped off
this
@dusty citrus Adam's SEM stream...
We hear ya
Yeah a pan flute theme
Poor Adam
cool pic of a eagle taking a big animal on sidebar
Yes, left channel.
Two mics are open
Can faintly hear the vacuum pump, I think.
We may have some echo tho
I seriously need to swap to speakers for this
#3 same as last
Your wireless mic is working
You did
Fantastic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-jreSblE_c < funicular train
@tiny moat go with it & try to fix more next time?
It’s working just fine
Well, just listen to right channel
More pro than me
That is my question
What was you explaining about cold air in & hot air out?
Just occasional clipping when speaking loudly.
@tiny moat audio running hot, but only occasional clipping
Do they make a module extender?
... cable?
Overall volume dropped, but it's still clipping occasionally.
Don't sweat it -- the content is okay.
Hmmm . . .
Much better
There’s no other way to get mono now?
stereo
If it's mono it's mono in both channels. 😃
got you in both ears now
👏
cool found the chat what's good
Hi @ornate fractal !!!
He’s destroying the goodness of his audio now
hoi @polar wraith why so excited?
More people in discord. 😃
Oh, hukuzatuna = Phil Moyer (for the Discord to YouTube translation)
yeah i figured from profile pic
I am Confedyank in YouTube
🤔
Arcing in the SEM = bad
oh god internmittent vac
Oh deer
are the falls faster than the rises?
Forgot to bring manual while setting up?
Yay!
Lighting fixed
The sounds makes me think of steam engine
Yeah, it does....
so what all do people work on in this discord? this'll be my first STEM channel thats not infosec focused
is it mostly adafruit-product-stuff?
Oh, you're into security. Interesting...
1st STEM channel?
Dah brown book!
I started 1.5 yrs ago with fault injection on the Nintendo 3DS, and now i have a job in it >.<
ool!
before this I was an analog circuit designer
adam u follow me on twitter I thought you'd know this
@polar wraith some examples of my bs: https://twitter.com/hedgeberg/status/908987145918074880
oh my god so many valves
Needs mo valves!
@ornate fractal Do you take contract board design work? 😃
hrrrrm, haven't yet, but I could, may need to run it by my boss though...
I work for MIT Lincoln Labs as of last week, and they're an FFRDC which makes external money stuff kinda weird
could just do it voluntary maybe?
depends on the project
That'd be ok. I'm building an autonomous rover. I want to drive the motors off of 24v, but I have all the logic and science instruments running at 5v. So I need a board that sits between solar panels, a big (TBD) LiPo battery bank, and the buck converters to drive the computers....
Neato microscope
Yeah, we have a lot of young folks around.
yeah please photos would be real helpful
yeah...
yeah in the reswitched discord we're a lot more laissez faire with language, hackers have awful pottymouths
I’m not on Twitter
@polar wraith i am happy to help with that project though, that sounds fun
@ornate fractal more than just hackers in here
maybe even open-source the board? it sounds like a great project for community reference
anyway if it were open-source/recreational I'd happily help for free, no need for contract
Oh, the whole thing will be open sourced! Hardware + software.
I /may/ want to stream it, depending on if thats alright
♥️ @ open sourced
yeah if its open source then theres definitely no need for contract
There's nothing proprietary about it at all. I deliberately want it to be replicatable (is that a word)?
So much pressure . . . Release
@tiny moat quick reminder at which sections we're seeing the pressure drop in?
@tiny moat what's the main function of the magnetic shield -- is it to establish a physical boundary you cannot get inside of?
@polar wraith I think the word is replicable/reproducible
There ya go. 😃
“Non-factory-only” seems most technically accurate
Maybe that is why it’s intermittent?
Is it a usually reliable valve went bad?
@tiny moat any chance you have a DAQ of any kind?
like an ADC or something you could plot the pressure waveform with?
the waveform would give you a /lot/ of info
We already discussed that
wait what?
He repeated what I typed, Hahahahahahaha!
Isolation time!
You must love it right now
yeah pls, post a schematic maybe we can rig up some kind of digital acquisition method
no for there to be a floating result, there needs to be roughly equivalent input and output flows
@polar wraith replicable maybe. duplicable is listed so it's a very similar model.
k its 2 AM here now and im at my parent's house so i need to hit the hay. night all
o/
read: parent's house
its holiday visitation hours and theyre very uncomfortable to be around
can't wait to get back home 🙄
G'night!
You have such great luck!
Or just aim it at the Australian audience. 😉
Japan
Etc
Wait, that is issue?
Serious cleaning time!
I am trying my best not to be overly sarcastic as I usually am
Well, I am used to seals/valves being that easily messed up from holding pressure
Although, I haven’t dealt with microscopes before
You plan on using spares to make 2nd?
Do you have a spare O-ring for the sample chamber? I mean, if it gets damaged while you're cleaning it?
By sounds of it, wouldn’t hurt to have couple extras of those
I understand not paying for 2nd column & such
@tiny moat Time to join the family, so I'll watch the recorded version tomorrow. Glad you're back "on the air." G'night!
I feel you’re going to need to make new manual by time you’re done with this
You can do it for me!
I’m done with the traveling
Audio is right again
That sounds overly confident
Beat me to it, @covert spire ...
Thank you 😄
@tiny moat Please fix audio
None
Right
Still right
Wow, sensitive plugs
Yes, it was concurrent with the zoom
There you go!!!
Right
Just clicks and rustling
I think you guys are getting his audio like 20 seconds before I do. 😉
Sounds good
Yup. No audio.
Right channel
Ouch
Right
Right
Maybe?
& gone
Back
Decent
Choppy
But we can hear ya
Thus audio card
Right
Video gone
@tiny moat video ?
big red question mark where the video was
I think we'll reschedule my brain surgery with him. 😉
LOL! "I am impressed by how bad this is."
The first one is 'pinched' audio. The second is only in the right channel but has a better sound (quieter though).
It is at least combobulatable
No this is the wrong audio.
3rd vote?
Staticky scratchy audio? Or Right channel more smooth audio?
It’s working? Noice
Yeah do that for five minutes with that right-only channel and we'll see if it is more effective.
spanky audio.
Spanky?
picks up a lot more machine noise than any of the other mics, Adam.
Prior versions was better
Nicer tone. Would do well if you were addressing this microphone in a quiet room.
We can hear all of his shop, because it doesn’t have proximity filter
It’s meant for only quiet room
Shop, no good
Yeah it's an omni.
Oops
Still I can copy him better, so far.
Leave this mic on for a while. I need to hear it when your back is to it.
That's a quiet mic.
I need to stop using headsets
clipping just a bit. Could back it off for clarity. It's a quiet mic, though.
Now ya need it again, Hahahahahahaha!
It picks up your bass tones which makes a big difference in readability. Easier to understand you.
Check audio after you zoom
He's opening up the sardines for a late snack.
Oi! It's only midnight out here.
Yep. 08:00z (and I'm on NYC / Boston time)
Yeah, when you pulled it out I assumed the gate valve was solid.
It did appear as one piece
Then cleans it, & seems are found
Would be nice to know why
It doesn’t appear to be
They still had to put a groove for the o ring
Was it an “oopsy”?
Because it would seem to be less machining to just put grooves than as you said
I put things like this in “Special kind of engineering”
Have no idea what that sardine can is for.
I didn’t say bad engineering, just Special, because it still works
Audio has been readable.
I’m catching choppy a bit, but it is combobulatable
“I’ll take it apart more”
Basically no time frame to fix this, but it will be fixed!
@tiny moat Make sure the registration points in the right spot.
That didn’t work
He's building a Dalek. I see right through him.
Does he get to keep this one or is it in the shop for service?
It's a good looking unit. Would do well with a general audience -- looks sciency and clean.
Oh deer, he’s talking about scary level of rebuild there
Please no opening the tank
Totally is!
Discoloration from dirt
Impressed by that?
When it came from factory
How did you get 2 black cleans?!?!?
That is rather dirty isn't it.
Forget cleaning cloth, time for serious scrub
Ummm . . .
Break time for cleaning?!?!?
That’s going to take a while to clean
That is bad
Probably from dirty
You can't say "I've seen it all" until you have. 😉
It looks like it needs that
Always a new one
You missed when he found issue on closing gate o ring
& the closing gate
I didn't miss it. I didn't know what that part was called.
Ah
that's the sardine can
audio is clipping a lot but the sound pressure is up and so is intelligibility over the first part of the stream.
conductive carbon paint
Had something to do witih X-rays
Maybe some left over from when they were painting other things?
xray spectroscopy
Maybe thorough on this one?
They had some carbon paint laying around already because it is used sparingly elsewhere on an SEM issued by this particular manufacturer.
OSU on the OSD
Eggzactly
Is this the part where I say don't forget the registration mark
Don't let the fleshy part of the Dalek loose. They're hard to get back in.
That’s when he stops taking apart, & when he start reversing
I thought that is why the plunger?
I will laugh if next time we see this microscope, he has a plunger duct taped to it
You got him saying 'plunger' 😉
I have to catch a few Zzz's of sleep now.
& I do need zzzz’s for work
Oh, I know, that was before I got on here tho
Sweet!
Party stage can rock now!
Thanks for including us Adam. It is interesting to participate.
Mainly interesting I partly understood what on earth happens in a microscope
He makes it look too easy
I still can’t touch one tho
Legit biasism, kept my interest for a bit
Well, night all
G'night!
Yup!
I'll be here as long as you're running. Trying to figure out why I'm getting flash memory read errors on multiple ESP32 Feathers....
Nah, don't fuss with it. You're good with the streaming audio.
What's the wire loop attached to the stage?
Aaaah, ok, makes sense. I shoulda thought of that.....
I have an IMU for the rover. The feather reads the IMU and inserts quaternion data into the master controller's MQTT topic....
Nope. Getting really annoyed. I'll probably stop fussing with it and watch the stream more closely.
YES!!!!
They're very cool! I really like them, and they'll look fabulous on metal.
I don't. Maybe you could send a set to me and I'll pick four out? Then paypal you the cash?
Cool!
Yup, saw it.
Ok. I'll browse through that Thursday. I have a bunch of stuff coming for the rover tomorrow, so I'll be totally distracted after AaE.
Got it! Thanks!
That doesn't sound good....
Nope. Forgot all about it. I'll set a reminder.
Um, horrible audio buzzing suddenly.
No buzzing now.
Yep, you're back!
LOL. Installing the IDE on a Raspberry Pi to see if I can get it loaded that way.
I did!
Dunno what parafilm is, but I saw it. And someone got really excited that you had tweeted about it. 😃
Oh cool. Lab grade saran wrap. 😃
Well, I was paraphrasing. Stretches 200% and becomes more supple with temperature? Sounds really handy!
Brute force doesn't sound like an ideal answer with a delicate instrument....
Alexa Daniels you say?
Cool! I'll go look it up.
YAY!!!
Yeah, there is that!
Yep, will do.
Good night, Adam! Thanks for streaming!
night phil!
Hey today ladyadas there......!
Hey we can get some kind of position depending on the time we have stayed and the degree till we can help ?!
We can get right.....?
😁
Did anyone hear me.....?
The projecthelp channel would be the best place to ask for help.
New watch day!
not a very electronic watch in this case
actually about as non-electronic as you can get in a wrist watch
@sleek urchin is it a sun dial watch 😃
oh cool 😄 is it see through
yeah, I specifically got the skeleton model. so most of the face plate is cut out, and there's a window on the back
show 😄
can see the escapement flailing back and forth
and, the kicker..
total shipped price... $14.
Because. China.
nice! 😃 not sure what an escapement is 😮
it's a little V-shaped hook that goes back and forth on a single direction toothed gear, only allowing it to advance one click with each movement
Show it?
trying to see if someone else has a video made, because I only have a mediocre cellphone camera
and these are pretty fine details
Reasons I use phone I do
You can replace that
yeah, that's why I got this one
I figure if the mechanism is good, I should just get a new strap
from what I've read, it's pretty decent
~1 minute every 4 days
Obviously terrible compared to a quartx watch
speaking of Chinese, need to get screw driver . . .
My best watch had -1 minute every 2-3 years
heh, this obviously isn't about super precision
mechanical watches are just plain neat
Well, that one was digital, the best mechanical I've seen is on time after over 20 years
It's a clock from 1920's
or 1930's
It does, last time it was touched was 1991 (at least) to do time change to EDT
It's on EST
We pulled out cell phones to compare, & it was still correct
So, quote of family became "You can set your phone's time by that clock"
heh, a decent leather band will cost as much as the watch
Pretty much
but yeah, that's the plan, a decent band
but, it'd more than double it's worth
and, if this thing fails, or gets to be very poor at time keeping... well, $14 is cheaper than servicing it
it's kind of like chinese fountain pens..
you can get some very reasonable options for not that much
there are also insanely expensive options..
I'm beyond picky about pens now
Heh, I prefer fountain pens, and I found a few nice Chinese ones to work with for now
Seems odd they found a market for that watch.
a market for mechanical watches?
sure, a quartz watch can be much cheaper, and more accurate
At that price, yeah. How is it economical to sell it for 14 bux?
It's China! labour is cheap, equipment is cheap, materials are cheap
I don't imagine this would be a super precision milled time keeping device like the $12k watches
most likely stamped out parts
I can think of two things: supply chain dried up for watch batteries, or b) they're punishing people by making them build watches and sell them below cost.
Oh, quartz watches and digital watches are even cheaper
Shouldn't be possible to sell something for so little money and be in business the next year to do it again.
economy is just different in china
not to mention the sheer availability of manufacturing capabilities
Just seems entirely fictional.
a big point is quality control
could order 10 of these watches
1 might break out of the box
3 might be entirely inaccurate
4 might be comesetically damaged. and 2 might be in perfect shape.
Well I suppose somebody wants that 14 dollars pretty badly.
It's basically gambling on ordering from china
Same reason that while you can order cheap modules from china, it can be a headache
whereas a place like Adafruit may cost significantly more, reflecting the manufacturing, but also the support and QC they supply
if this watch breaks, I don't even imagine I'd bother trying to get warrenty repairs or anything (shipping to china would be more than the cost of the watch)
I appreciate your insights. I'm still not there, by a long margin. I would really like to know how these things are possible (where the hidden rate of exchange is, might be a way to ask this better).
There is a model of Nixie watch from US, but it's enclosed, & as prior said about quality control
got audio on S&T
Really, a lot comes down to costs... China is not an expensive country to live in, until you get to large cities (which are stupidly expensive)
government regulations, currency manipulations, environmental standards, health standards, etc, etc
bbl, s&t time
Copper chain glove?
I figured if static can get through that much metal, I’m no longer concerned about the electronics
Also, as per usual, has my own style to it
just need to ground your gauntlet now =p
I found some wire to use for that
Some stranded wire
Still stripping more wire to finish it off
although an important safety feature of anti statis wrist straps is the resistor..
they have a 1 M Ohm resistor between the strap and ground
@proven olive I seen why you asked about 1-axis, would it be possible to program it to not respond to X-axis?
prevents you from conducting much current.. enough to bleed off static though
A resister can be soldered in
Ah
@sleek urchin I haven’t seen spot to put a resister in some of the cheaper models tho
sometimes just due to contact resistance as designed
often embedded
but the cheap ones really just rely on high resistance contacts to the skin
Ah
@proven olive If you're going for the feel, it may be better to use a 2 axis joysitck and build a physical guide for it to travel in.
Well, my high resistance is my work boots
Actually, what he wants is “Center-set switch”
You can push it up or down, & it forces to middle, but it is a switch
Auto-parts stores sell those
So long as it's analog, not a simple on/off
Not what I want at all, then, unfortunately.
I sold boating stuff for 5 years, I'm familiar with such switches.
Ah
They're really useful for some things, just not what I want for this application
The ones I dealt with are simpler than boating
Oh, yeah.
Boating has to deal with stuff like water.
Makes it a whole lot more expensive.
Indeed.
My time spent selling boat stuff convinced me: Never get a boat. I cannot afford it
One thing I learned, it’s same in cars about warranty
So, if I want one, I must build it
Anyways . . . (Before I see my wallet go empty) otherwise, I don’t know what to say for old school RC joysticks
I seen one that is 2-axis on Adafruit about same size
Yep.
Ok, MicroHex, what wattage?
@stuck moth Quick question if your around. How do I cancel out of this Discord?
as in leave this server, or quit out of discord completely?
@cerulean badge I helped them out in a DM
cool cool
thanks!
Does anyone know any kind of Smart RGB LED Thats similar to Dotstar LEDs but larger in size as NeoPixels.....?
@tender nimbus You mean like https://www.adafruit.com/product/2343 ?
5050 LED packages are already considered quite alrge
I don't think there are any LEDs that you could solder that are larger than that
you'd be moving to RGB lamps at that point
and those don't have control built in (unless you buy those SmartHUE bulbs or something)
You can get the larger through hole neopixels
@grave crest My panavise & arms finally arrived yesterday. What a joy. Scared the cat the first time he saw it, though.
@grave crest It does look somewhat menancing with those arms!
@cursive pike It's one of my favorite tools. I hope it serves you well 😃
The traditional helping hands unit is a patience tester, that's for sure.
okay, as neat as the 3d printed RPi cases can be
hard to beat an injection molded NESPi case
Good news -- found a SNES Classic in a [very] rural Walmart! Bad news, a 50amp breaker panel (installed in the 70s) just disintegrated on a neighbor's home. I'm helping my electician Dad fix this -- it's only 12 degrees outside and falling. Oh, it's windy too.
SNES Classic is nice
I've put mine back int eh box for now
like my switch, I just haven't had time for it
I rather convert dead PS1 into pi case for retro gaming
Which is why 3D printing is so awesome, way more options
heh, well, there's enough of a market that people are making these injection molded mini nes cases
I wasn't too keen on the idea of the NES classic. Controller form factor wasn't the best, nor was the selection of games appealing (good, yes. Just not my favorites). But the SNES was, to me, the golden age of gaming.
well, it's not like the NES Classic was trying to improve on the original <_<
original controllers sucked too
Well, there is popularity to NES, because of nostalgic
it was an amazingly well selling console in the early to mid 80's =p
But for lesser fan base like me to PS1, given choice
PS1 was also 2 generations later
yes. NES generation, then SNES generation, PS1 didn't come around to N64 generation
PS1 came out late 1995
Did PS1 last that short of time?
Nintendo 64 came out late 1996
SNES came out mid 1991
so, yes, the PS1 is two game console generations later than the NES
Hmmm . . . 1994 per wiki
only in Japan
Although, something’s off
all the dates I mentioned were considering NA releases
I remember playing PS2 in 1998
but sure, I can appreciate using an old console
I just don't like hacking up old hardware just to shove a RPi into it
Dead one for reason, I rather save a case from a non-working one from landfill
For where I live, it’d be really bad idea to toss a good system
I do want to try to fit a Mini ITX PC build in a dead original NES...
Noice
Moneys, always that thing
Would 2oz of acrylic paint be enough for keyboard?
looks at the time I may or may not have stayed up til 4 o'clock messing around with kicad...
'In this talk we will give an introduction to the unique software stack that powers the Switch, and share our progress in the challenge of breaking it. We will talk about the engineering that went into the console, and dive deep into the security concepts of the device.' https://media.ccc.de/v/34c3-8941-console_security_-_switch
@indigo jetty That's funny, I was just about to open KiCad and start working on a design, and it's 0145....
Consider me ghost of Christmas future, know you are about to make a terrible mistake @polar wraith
ROTFL!
@indigo jetty I stopped. I realized I have to do my power budget (so I know how many batteries I need) before designing the power systems interface board!
It was my first time using it last night
Pretty fun
Kinda unintuitive! @stuck moth sent on a good video though
Can you share the video link?
And now rather than doing a power budget I've concluded I can just put a voltage/ammeter outboard of the two power converters and directly measure the draw. 😃 Cheating, but it'll work.
So off at Adafruit shopping for meters. Yes, I can get them cheaper from China, but this'll take two days rather than three weeks.
hooray for a new mouse! no more random double-click. downside is adjusting to a new mouse...old one had 15 years of muscle memory. 🐭 🖱
@polar wraith
Creating a small, simple board in KiCad in about 20 minutes (26 minutes total with ordering the board). Sourcing the board via OSHpark. Discuss this video on...
Sweet! Thank you!
Which one is better KiCAD Eagle or EasyEDA
@tender nimbus Depends on how you use it. I, personally, would give a slight edge to Eagle for the simple fact that it is an industry standard.
@proven olive I have to same opinion I have tried others but it was kind of hard to use....... Other ones
KiCad is awful to use, personally. I've never tried EasyEDA, but I have used PCBWeb. Decently easy but lacks huge amounts of features.
@proven olive I think you should maybe try EasyEDA if you prototype a lot cause they kind off directly connect you to the PCB and Components Supplier and the PCB prices are also bang for buck
And PCBWeb does look nice seems like have to try
I largely get my components from DigiKey, and my prototype boards from PCBWay. $5 for 10 boards, plus $25 for shipping - $30 and they're at my door less than a week later
$25 for shipping?
That would be a bit of pain.......
By the way you were saying PCBWeb doesnt have some features....... Which ones.....?
honestly as a hobbyist the main turn off on learning Eagle is that it's licensed per year AND it's propeitary to boot
that's an uninformed opinion though because I know how bad open source UI can get if there's not money behind it
Andon, why so many monitors?
It's something they posted in #circuitpython-dev
Thats a really good setup cause I can use one for discord one for youtube one for eagle one for coding one for github one for facebook and one for maybe other stuffs
IIRC diminishing returns for extra monitors productivity wise has been demonstrated from studies
What....?
I forget the source but after two monitors the productivity increases kinda fall away
I would assume at some point it starts decreasing after you're unable to pay water and food bills in order to afford the number of monitors and video cards necessary
You mean if we have more than 2 monitors it affects the perfomance.......?
ostensibly yes, although studies are apparently funded by companies who financially benefit from monitor sales
I don't actively use most of them. And my monitors have been upgraded since that picturen but layout is the same
Don't know why its really hard to understand your sentences 😅 @stark peak
Sorry, I tend to be rambly and aren't exactly as awake as I would like to be
@tender nimbus Are you a native English speaker, or is it a second language for you?
I currently only have four functioning. The one to the far left I use for my Pis when they need testing, so not set up on main computer.
Oh..... I knew you had each use for each monitor
Prime is in the center. Right/bottom is social media - Twitter/facebook/etc - It will get used for reference lookups and/or game info depending on what I'm doing
You knw i want to be so lik u guys
Left/bottom is Discord. It's part of how I keep track of here
Top/center is E-mail and my music player. Not something I need to actively keep track of
Hmm..... Thats nice......
Top/right died a few months ago and I haven't replaced it. I have the replacement but I have to shuffle monitos around a lot. Top/left is ancient and dieing so i have it disconnected as well
Oh, and two of my monitors don't have VESA mounts so I need to buy or make adapters.
So I can mount them properly
I think you should really spend on weekend to rearrange all of them and keep them sorted
It's one of those things that's just always a bit lower in priority
For me its one of those things in my high priority list and makes me feel really good
😅
Can u post a pic of your whole place......
Please........ @proven olive

Nah, that's about the whole fancy bit.
Can u pls post a pic........
It's nothing special. Plus, my room requires a lot of cleaning, straigtening, and rearranging before it's fit to show anyone. And my work area is some things on top of a small rickety table that needs to be replaced.
Getting my workspace improved is one od my priorities for the new year. Then I can do S&T
I think I should also do the same.......
Hmm.......
By the way what are you specialized in...?
What do you mean by specialized?
Hardware or Software
Hardware, definitely.
Yeah......!
I don't particularly enjoy doing software, but I can do it passably.
Usually to the extent that it gets my hardware working.
Perhaps. I'm not an expert in everything. I'm only starting to learn Eagle, and my free time isn't the greatest at the time being.
I am really good at Eagle
But I am not good at Software perspective and at Datasheets
So you work atAdafruit........?
I do not. I would like to eventually, though.
Hmm.....
My day job is working in a bakery at a grocery store.
By the way you are master punner....?
