It is very interesting how different the communities of Hackaday and Adafruit are
How so, @hollow oasis?
Just realised ElectroBoom on youtube is actually my neighbour xD @indigo jetty
I wonder does he cause any power outages
ok I think too much with Mixed reality to maker space as design device and then make it for real
@stuck moth think your Rosie CI as you put camera showing it shows emotion how happy rosie is or if there is errors on builds in Mixer reality
@polar wraith Adafruit is more supportive, while Hackaday is more competitive.
some peach blossom fish have been spotted at a lake near me, I want to go do some spongebob style jellyfishing
Hahah @elfin wave
One of the guys sent on a clip of the chicken win from his perspective, I'm so excited in it
Unfortunately there is some not so friendly language in it so I won't share here (not me and nothing terrible, just not suitable for the young ones!)
@indigo jetty pm it to me so I can see!
yeah, I can take some swears
@bold turtle my toaster oven shipped but they didn't give me a tracking number ๐
@stuck moth finally... Also, wth?
You are more patient than me, @stuck moth
soon it's
toaster
I try @bold turtle
@stuck moth you do your board design in kicad right?
yup, kicad nightly
@stuck moth I ordered the same toaster oven but I am only going to reflow cheese with it.
I got the shipping email today, same as you. I think I ordered a day or two later. Also no tracking number.
weird
There is no order tracker mechanism on the website so I think they are just barely in the computer age. Probably not finished converting their old 800-number order system.
haha, ya
... now i want reflowed cheeses on a sourdough substrate... blaming you @fair summit
ohh... or sourdough cheezy garlic bread....
dangit, @fair summit, this is past my lunch break.....
We needed a new one because the heating element in our Cusinart was doing this. A common problem apparently.
Hard to see but it's also splitting open on the left side of the element.
toaster oven run by circuitpython
I'm actually going to push my live stream til Sunday, my sister is home from London
@indigo jetty @elfin wave @abstract violet PUBG time after I post the release announcement to the forums
Ooh. Dinnertime for us now but I might be free in a few hours
k, I likely won't be because my girlfriend will be home from work
gonna sneak some time in now
I'll be off and on all weekend though
I'm in bed so a reluctant no for me @stuck moth
I'm trying to go to bed earlier these days!
@stuck moth @indigo jetty pm me your guys' steam ~
It's witnessmenow
@indigo jetty count your breaths... it knocks me out all the time..
I'm not to bothered who has it ๐
Have fun, I'm sure we'll play soon!
cheers, added
I'm tannewt @cascade
And, surprisingly, I'm Sigafoos
gah #5
@stuck moth I thought you'd be done by now ๐
hiding in bush
I'm up for some games when you're done
Ohm is so cute!
@stuck moth and I got 9/50 in PUBG duos! without ever seeing another person.
yay!
and I honked a horn
which was my personal victory condition
PUBG is basically a camping simulator for me. I hike through the woods, maybe have a few (energy) drinks...
No shooting or tactics for me!
#win was paying my internet bill and was digging through the different packages. Was able to double my download speed and save $5 a month with a new package they have ๐
Now that I look at it, probably isn't the best idea.

debian. always.
You could even throw Raspbian on it @runic elbow (debian based)
Wasn't Raspbian designed for the Raspberry Pi?
It runs fine on normal PCs. old article, but here's the setup: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pixel-pc-mac/
Our vision in establishing the Raspberry Pi Foundation was that everyone should be able to afford their own programmable general-purpose computer. The intention has always been that the Raspberry Pi should be a full-featured desktop computer at a $35 price point. In support of this, and in parallel with our hardware development efforts, weโve โฆ
Oh, interesting. I might try that.
Maybe when I get a good disc. The most I have is 700 Megabytes on a disc.
Good thing the hard drive is about eight gigabytes.
So at the DragonCon parade today I ran into someone else using NeoPixels...
I told him about the Discord. ๐
His TV head is quite a bit denser than my sousaphone.
looks awesome.
thats neat. did the tv play animations?
aww ๐
It wasn't animating at the time, but he said he could do more with it
Was he Prince Robot??
They both look awesome
I don't know if you're supposed to be something specific but I dig it
I was the Ice King from Adventure Time
It's more obvious when my kid, dressed as Fionna, is next to me.
mathematical!
https://www.youtube.com/user/Druaga1 This is where I get all my information on computers.
I have decided: I'm putting ReactOS on the old WIndows XP machine.
Because I have nothing better to do today.
Plus I'm not about to let one of my oldest computers go obsolete.
Plus I wanna see how many times I can crash it just by using it normally.
I haveba live CD ready.
But first, I wanna mess around with Windows ME on this computer.
Ok, turns out after installing drivers, Windows ME is unable to restart properly.
This is what comes from Windows MistakeEdition
If you've installed it, that's probably due to system restore
No, this is an old drive we've had a while.
Still, because system restore hammers the crap out of it
Windows ME was the first implementation of it before Windows XP ran with it.
Yep.
iirc WinME also introduced WDM driver types/architecture and had memory leaks when accessing files over 500mb in size
Memory leaks are bad
Like, is it storage? Or the RAM?
It's the RAM. RAM is memory. Storage is not.
Oh, ok.
Modern marketing has blurred this definition.
Probably not.
Yay swapfile.
A swap file is basically virtualised RAM, it uses a file on your hard drive as though it's RAM and swaps content between actual RAM and the virtual RAM. It's slow.
I can't tell you how to set the CD drive as the boot device, that's dependant on the computer you're using and it might not support it.
Also you might want to download the WindowsME service pack and other updates, if you feel adventurous: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#WME
Ok, thank you.
If I can't get React OS working, at least I'll have a Windows ME machine.
Try browsing the internet with internet explorer. That'll be entertaining.
Don't do that. ๐
Yep. Just as soon as I get it near an internet thing.
That's like saying "Try walking through a swamp with an open wound"
I'm sure it isn't that bad.
Pages render rather amusingly
It's not a matter of "if" you'll get infected, it's a matter of "What terrible way will it kill you"
Oh, so stick with the React OS there?
Not entirely likely, it's probably IE4 and most malware online would be expecting at least IE6.
The problem you'll have is lack of standards support.
I mean, if you're brave enough. ๐
It has Norton. So nope, not going there.
I think my disc drive is broken.
Because it isn't doing anything.
Floppy disk or CD drive?
CD. Floppies are disks. CDs are discs.
So your CD drive will only do something if you have a driver for it, and this is assuming the internal connections are correct for it also.
They are.
And that it's enabled in the BIOS.
I'm trying to set it to boot the React OS love CD.
And it should be enabled.
I enabled it.
Live CD*
Not love CD
I'm also assuming that it's been in its default configuration since you got the machine, and you haven't needed to mess about with it being master, slave or cable select and on the correct IDE cable plug.
It is he secondary master.
If the disc spins, then from what I recall, even if you set the CD drive to be the default boot device, it typically asks you to press a key to boot from the CD.
It doesn't do that. I turn it on, it asks me to press Del t go to setup, or F1 to go normally. Then it boots into Windows ME.
When I press F1
I have the hard disk disabled al together, and now it says nothing is there.
Sometimes F8 or F10 can be pressed to bring up a boot menu.
If it's booting into Windows ME still, some BIOSs have a setting to "boot other device" where it searches for something to boot from, which could explain why it's still booting from the hard drive.
So enable it, and press F8 before Windows ME boots?
You could try that
I've had computers where I've had to leave 'boot other device' enabled and it was a hacky method to boot from USB or CD.
It depends on the bios. F8, F10, delete... I've seen them all
I can't get it.
Accessing the cd drive works in windows me?
Yes, but it can't read the ISO in the live CD.
I literally JUST copied it onto the disc, I have no idea what's going on.
Copying the .iso file to the CD doesn't work. You have to use software which writes the .iso image to the CD.
Oh.
By writing in this case, I mean it takes every bit and copies it over 1:1 to the CD
So I need to do it again?
Effectively extracting it to it, but not exactly.
Yes.
eg. use IMGBurn if you're using windows.
You need software to create a live disc
Oh. Is there a free softwae for this?
Yes
IMGBurn is free.
Oh cool.
Thank you.
Thanks.
@vast condor Will that work with ReactOS?
@gray aspen it should
I'm not clear if ReactOS is linux based or if it requires the ability to write a boot section to the CD, linux live CDs typically don't need that kind of hidden magic, though mainly Windows did that type of thing.
I hope I can get this done tonight. I would like to make a video about React OS.
@vast condor Does that software only write to USB sticks, or does it also write to CDs?
@gray aspen you choose the media, so yes works for a CD or flash drive. Fairly certain at least.
I've used it for like 4 or 5 different Linux distros
You guys really helped me out. Thanks.
Wait, is Pendrivelinux supposed to be an EXE or a ZIP?
Sometimes you get self extracting zip archives which are exe files.
Oh, ok.
Websites don't tend to label these very well.
The live CD will handle everything
Wait, will it install itself on my Windows ME drive? I wanna keep that Installation of Windows ME. It's the only one I have.
You will have to repartition your hard drive if you want to install the OS to it alongside Windows ME. If ReactOS supports doing so.
Live CD software* you can run it off the CD
Oh, ok.
If you run it off the CD, none of your data will save after reboot
Dual booting windows ME and Linux is going to be a mess
Windows ME has been supported for a lifetime, just wipe it
I have no idea how this software works.
You're asking for all sorts of problems if you connect that to the web
Oh cool.
So that will behave differently to how linux would when trying to run it alongside WindowsME on the same hard drive.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
I'm still not entirely clear on what ReactOS is without using it myself.
I recommend you use imgburn to write the iso to the CD.
Ok.
If it's not Linux based then yes, you should use imgburn
For imgburn?
Yes.
It's the old school way of providing different mirrors to the same file.
So they're all the same?
Are you running Windows?
Yes. 32 bit Windows 7 Professional.
Then yes, all the mirror links on http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download are the same
Ok, thank you.
This is going to be an interesting experience.
Taking a bit to open.
Ok, it's open.
How do I select what disc to put it on? And what ISO to put on it?
If you're running imgburn you should see
I do. I clicked the top left one.
It's doing stuff wthout my permission.
I didn't click anthig after the first screen.
It's just doing things.
It added a search manager extension to chrome.
Why is it doin this?
A threat has been detected!
What the hell did you link me?
Imgburn software doesn't do that at all.
You may have downloaded an installer which was either wrapped around imgburn, or not imgburn which asked you if you wanted to install that.
I clicked Number seven on the page you linked me.
Unfortunately this happens and we should be wary about sites which can do that.
All I wanted was to see how badly I could crash React OS.
At least Avast caught the virus.
It's doing a boot time scan right now.
You may have seen this, and clicked next to install it.
That's EXACTLY what it was.
You have to "click here to customize the installation" and tell it not to install those parts.
Why the hell was Chromium just put on my desktop?
And is this thing easy to find? Or am I screwed?
Because it was installed as part of it.
You should be able to find it in 'programs and features' or 'add/remove programs' in control panel.
Well, at least Twitter isn't the default browser anymore.
Avast hasn't said anything, yet.
Also, it would have been nice if I was warned about that.
Somethig is opening.
I have no idea what it is.
This better not be a super destructive virus.
It looks like Avast was the thint opening.
It is.
Ok, I set it ALL to install in a folder. Do you thin it would have also installed he virus in the folder?
No it did not.
You haven't installed a virus. You will want to check for the software you installed in Windows' software list to uninstall it from control panel or similar as I suggested.
Why didn't you warn me about this? Did yu forget?
Ok
Now my disc drive is revving up.
I don't think I can trust lins here, anymore.
Considering this just happened.
Links*
To be fair to what just happened, aside from not trusting links being practically sensible, reading what you're installing also makes sense. There are some things I do from experience these days and customising installations is second nature to me, understandably it isn't to everyone that is not experienced with it.
@runic elbow avast will detect other anti virus protection as a false positive anyways.
That's what that software was. It's not "fake"
Do you know how to uninstall software from your computer?
Just uninstall it
Yes, but I need to know the exact location of the virus.
No, it's installed as software. Use the standard uninstall procedure for software to remove it.
So the uninstall thing Imgburn gave me?
And how do I do that? I have no idea where it is.
Okay, so you want help on uninstalling software from your computer.
That's not how uninstalling works.
Ok, how do I do it?
Shall I send the steps to you in a message?
Yes please.
I found it.
Ok, I found add and remove programs, and told it to uninstall the thing.
Chromium was the other software also installed.
Is Chromium safe? If so, I can remove that later. I mean the Chromium this thing installed.
It says "Thanks for trying Bytefence"
I wouldn't trust this install of chromium. Usually chromium is safe, however it may have something custom to it.
Uninstall and reboot
I just want it gone.
Click the thing it wants me to do?
The virus is telling me to do this.
It is the thing givin me that option.
I don't trust this thing.
You'll be okay.
I swear to god, if this kills my PC.
Click the uninstall and reboot button the virus is givin me?
Is that the one I click?
I really can't click it for you.
Will the other things do stuff after the install?
I'm not sure what other things you're referring to.
Using the installer, you installed three pieces of software. You haven't uninstalled chromium or imgburn, and clicking the button should reboot and uninstall the most problematic out of the three. I would suggest uninstalling chromium when your computer boots back up.
That may be a part of finishing the uninstall process that will happen when you uninstall and reboot, that whatever that is will be removed, if it was installed as part of bytefence.
It doesn't appear to be doing anything.
The screensaver came up.
Is it actually uninstalling or do I need to click somethin else?
If the dialogue boxes have gone away, perhaps restart the computer yourself.
Do you mean the prompt to uninstall and restart is still there?
No, the two "We found issues" windows are still there.
I suggest looking through the list of software for other apps that you're not expecting to be there, and uninstalling them. Including chromium.
Have you restarted your computer?
No, I am not risking that.
If you're not going to click on the option that says 'uninstall and restart' then it's going to ding because that window has taken ownership of what's going on, that's a Windows OS thing. If you're not going to restart the computer so it can finish the uninstall process and remove the icons/software, you're going to still see it. I'm not sure what not doing these things is going to achieve.
Also software such as Avast isn't suitably catered to fully removing software like this, because avast is anti-virus software, not entirely anti-malware, if it stays around after you reboot the computer. You'll want to use software such as spybot search & destroy, or malware bytes.
Fine, I'll restart my machine.
The intall thing is still running.
Install*
Wait, I figured ot why.
Out*
I think I'll just use the imae burner my dad put on the family machine.
Image*
Not messing around with Imgburner anymore.
The windows are still there.
Also, the Add/remove software thing is frozen.
That can sometimes appear to happen if there's a dialogue box awaiting your input somewhere.
I found that.
I'm not clear on what you have or haven't done at this point, or what state your computer is in, because you seem to refuse to do things that are being suggested. If your computer had been restarted you wouldn't still have the add/remove software window, and you wouldn't still have the windows/dialogue boxes open.
Have you tried turning it off and on again - IT Crowd
sorry. had to.
I went to Remove programs, and went to remove Bytefence. A window popped up, telling me it wold uninstall and reboot. Anther window popped up, with the progress bar. When it finished, I clicked close on it.
Now my entire desktop, besides the task bar, is frozen.
It roze after I found the folder Advanced PC care made, threw it int the recycle bin, and tried to empty it.
It unfroze, and I deleted this folder.
Windows tends to freeze when it's waiting for something. Considering it said that you should reboot the computer, you've interrupted the steps by going ahead and trying to delete the folder yourself.
It probably had to wait until a lock had timed out on a file it was trying to access.
You should still reboot your computer.
The recycle bin is still takin cre of Advanced PC Care.
Care*
Thank god this thing was easy to remove.
Ok, everythin is gone. No more viruses.
Thanks for helping me remove it.
Great.
Like my new rig?
Mouse is too new ๐
Doesnt that look a bit old? @runic elbow
Good work @runic elbow
Looks nice. Definetly better then my set up for my main PC.
Oh my.
PUBG anyone? @indigo jetty @elfin wave
I'll be a bad influence
we're already on a team, it seems!
eh
I dunno what i said ๐
I know what it is "pack ing"
i probably won't @stuck moth im tidying up after the stream
will probably be an hour before im home and work in the morning
we're in voice chat
I might have to buy into this at some point...
@tiny moat do, its so good
@indigo jetty But SEM parts... Or video game... Or SEM parts...
I've never played a game that can get my heart literally racing as much as this game can
My PC struggles to play it, may be part of the reason why I struggle to kill anyone
it's $40... that can't be too many SEM parts
@gray aspen check this link article out: https://blog.hackster.io/play-triple-a-games-on-your-raspberry-pi-by-streaming-with-parsec-b395d76aae68
I spent more on the pc to play it
my favorite part is when people run by you because you're hiding
and then we get into a firefight and lose because I don't have a scope ๐ฆ
#6 is still pretty good
yeah! out of 50 teams!
I struggle with the transition from using alt to look to shooting down the sights
we have the general idea down I think. go somewhere secluded, get stuff, stay out of the way
@vast condor I've ran steam on an AWS (amazon) server and streamed using Steam's in house streaming. It worked reasonably well for Grand Theft Auto 5, though you're paying a fee to run the windows server and the nvidia cloud instance.
it's just when we have to actually, y'know, shoot people
OnLive was really good. #rip
@elfin wave Yes there's little opportunity to practice with the weapons
you need to go aggresive for a few games to practise
land at school etc
you'll probably die but at least you'll get in a few fights!
yeah, I've done that
I'm still not great but better
I didn't have any scope at all. that's what killed me this game.
I should have stayed in the bush and tried to micro uzi them
anybody else want to play?
I'm just home now and wrecked so definitely no from me
I get about 29-60fps with some stuttering from texture load in.
Managed to handle that a bit with disabling SLI and overclocking the gfx card by modding the bios
Do you use reshade?
#5 of 92
So close you can smell the poultry
yeah, it was pretty intense
On windows 10, I went to download React OS for a live CD. I went through the steps, and before the download started, Edge asked me what I want to do with React OS. How can I make it save to the desktop?
I have no idea how to open the file location on Windows 10.
You are using edge?
Yes, Edge.
My guess is it puts it into your "Downloads" folder
let me double check
look in c:\Users\<your user name>\Downloads
You can hit the windows key + E
which will open up an explorer window
When you go to download something with Edge, you can also click on the ^ next to the "Save" button and it will give you a "Save As" option
to let you save it where ever you want
Yeah, you can hit Save As then that will open a new window, and on the left column of that window you can click on "Desktop" which should be an option
Once you select "Desktop", click on the "Save" button in the lower right of that new window
There is no save button. It will only let me open folders.
It pops up for a second when I click Desktop, then changes to Open.
Oh, ok.
If you have folders on your desktop and you click on one once to highlight it, it will change to "Open"
I use Win32DiskImager
Oh cool.
The popular one now I believe is called Etcher
That's the exact thing I found.
that's what I've seen in the newer Adafruit tutorials
Win32diskimager is what I found my dad uses.
It's probably what was used to put Raspbian on an SD card.
How do I use this? Burning images is a little new to me.
You will insert the SD card you want to burn the image on into the computer, and take notice of what drive letter it assumes
Does it also do CDs?
No, if you just want to burn a CD from an iso you should be able to right click on the file name and it should give you an option to burn to disk
Oh, ok.
yeah, "Burn disk image"
So I didn't even need this computer? I couod have used my personal one?
I'm not sure what exactly you were trying to do but possibly?
I want to make a ReactOS live CD.
As long as your other computer has a CD burner
Mine doesn't have any CD burning software.
just right click on the file, and select "Burn disk image"
then a new window will pop up and walk you through it
Does it need to be on he disc?
what do you mean?
Does the ISO need to be on the disc to burn it on?
No, an ISO is just an image of a disk that is saved to a file, so you just tell Windows to take that file and turn it back into a physical disk
You'll just have to put in a blank CD into the CD burner drive
So I can burn it onto the CD while the ISO is on the desktop?
Yep
Oh cool. So just right click it and tell it to burn on the disc?
Yep
I don't think windows would let you burn to a disk that already had something on it
it isn't as trusting of the user as *nix is
Doesn't seem like it.
I always get paranoid when doing stuff with externa storage. I should probably stop checking it. I checked five times.
Ok, halfway there.
Can't wait to see if React OS will even work on the Windows XP machine I have. Which is now a Windows ME machine.
Because apparently Windows XP installer can't format more then one hard disk.
Yay, it's done!
\o/
Now to see how much it bluescreens trying to run on my old PC.
It's probably goig to bluescreen a lot.
It completely ignored the disc.
Oh, I forgot to put the disc in.
It booted to Windows ME.
I think it's working.
It is!
Nevermind.
Wait, there's still disc activity.
WHOO! It worked!
It actually boots!
It's trying, at least.
It worked!
React OS works!
Now I'm gonna bluescreen it.
Wait, I can easily clone my Windows ME disk with this.
Well, MS DOS galaga works. Just not good.
I tried to change the resolution of the scren and it bluescreened.
the quest continues!
Yep.
My next goal is to install it onto hard drive.
But I have no blank ones.
I have an idea, but I don't know how to do it. Or if it's possible.
Eh, I'll try it later.
I have two drives in the machine I'm working on, and the live CD active. How can I put all the data from one drive, onto another without putting anything on the desktop?
@elfin wave What's reshade?
@flint python Hah, I forgot about Windows in built ability to burn discs, I stopped trusting that when it was introduced in windows xp, I guess it's not so bad these days
This video deals with installing reshade and settings in order to maximize your FPS. Reshade download: https://reshade.me/ PCPartPicker part list: https://pc...
It's a way to tweak certain things for better performance
Is it ? Looks like it makes things colourful mainly
It's happening! I'm installing React OS on a hard drive.
It worked, but it failed to get the audio controller and ethernet drivers.
No operating system on this computer so far has been able to find the drivers.
Who else is on a pi?
Does anyone know ehre I can get some Windows XP ethernet drivers?
I need one for my React OS machine.
@runic elbow Totally depends on the chipset for the drivers. If it's on the motherboard, look in the motherboard manufacturer's support area. What kind of machine?
I'm about to give up on this machine. It found literally EVERY driver except the ethernet and sound ones.
It even found the phone modem. There isn't even a phone modem on this machine.
What motherboard is it @runic elbow ?
Let me check.
Did you try Ubuntu on it?
Oh right
It's very likely you'd be able to pick up a free PC somewhere that would be more powerful than this one. I'm not familiar with US websites, but maybe somewhere like Craigslist?
It's not really a shop, it's ads where people sell stuff second hand
Oh, ok.
Like it would be very common for people to nearly give away stuff that's old
Yep. That's how I got my Windows 98 machine.
Like if you only have 650mb of storage that's maybe 15-20 years old
I got a laptop on 2005 that had 100gb of storage
So I'm basing it off that
I meant I don't have any CDs or DVDs that are bigger then 650 megs.
My god, about 400 megs less then React OS.
Im. In work so I just started the download and stopped to see how big it is but I think it was 97mb
There's also the "Network Installer" version of Ubuntu: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/alternative-downloads
Thank you.
Ok, I have the brand of the motherboard.
It's Asus.
Still, Lubuntu is freaking tiny.
We would need a model number @runic elbow
Ok.
I see a sticker that is a barcode.
I don't see any other number codes, so I'm goin to assume the numbers on the barcode are it.
That might be hard to catch. The BIOS comes and goes pretty quick.
No worries
Ok, got the code. Later I'll try putting it in the Asus website.
No results.
Does Asus have a page for drivers?
It does not appear to have one.
Welp, I guess that's the end of this project. Nothing will ever be able to install the drivers.
I found my saving point! Intel.
They have drivers for everything.
Even Windows XP ethernet drivers. Just what I need.
I should maybe slow down.
@runic elbow Intel has drivers for their own chipsets. But it could be someone else's. Is XP still running on this machine? You can download a simple program for XP or 98 that tells you all about the machine hardware: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
CPU-Z is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system :
Processor name and number, codename, process, package, cache levels.
Mainboard and chipset.
Memory type, size, timings, and module specifications (SPD).
Real time measurement of each core's internal frequency, memory frequency.
The CPU-Zโs detection engine is now available for customized use through the CPUID System Information Development Kit, a professional SDK built for the Microsoft Windows & Android.
And what is the model number / code for the Asus motherboard
No, I am running React OS.
Hold on, let me copy paste the code.
Msa0311109-02309-m8l78h-ao1
That was the only code sticker on the board.
Hmm. No part of that code is an Asus mothboard model number. Hit F2 or F12 or DEL when the machine is rebooting. That will get you into the BIOS, and you probably find the model number in the BIOS settings.
Ok, I'll get he machine hooked up.
How did you find the drivers on intel page @runic elbow ?
Oh, wait maybe M8L78H.
The number isn't in the BIOS.
Looks like P4S533-MX is an alternate name for #M8178 motherboard. Socket 478 P4, Celeron, etc. https://www.asus.com/us/supportonly/P4S533-MX/HelpDesk_Download/
Does the motherboard look like this (this picture does not have the CPU mounted): http://www.ruby-electronics.com/images/mb-as-p4s533mx-b.jpg
Note the model number between the white card slots in the upper left
That looks VERY close. Except mne only has two RAM slots.
Yep, I see the white card.
Is there writing between the white slots? says "P4S533-MX" on the picture (click the picture to see it larger)
Another giveaway is the SiS chip in the middle lower left.
Do you have an SiS chip in that general location?
Yes.
OK, so try the drivers on the link I gave above: https://www.asus.com/us/supportonly/P4S533-MX/HelpDesk_Download/
It's an SiS Ethernet chipset, not Intel or other, so you need a driver for that.
Ok.
Ok, good luck!
Other links on that page are the manual, etc.
in the bar across the middle top
You may have an OEM version of the motherboard, so it wouldn't have prominent branding for Asus.
I don't see any download options.
Wait, I got it.
For ethernet, do I get the LAN driver?
Yes.
Okidokie.
I'm gonna format my CD and put the driver file on that.
This is gonna take a bit.
I probably should have more then just one rewritable.
My DVD drive doesn't detect the CD.
Come on, this CD was opened just two days ago, it can't be broken already.
Didn't take long before an error that ruins everything came along.
ReactOS supposedly has USB flash drive support. If you get tired of it try Puppy Linux instead, which runs on old/small machines.
I don't have any USB flash devices.
oh well
My day has went from good to, a slightly less good day.
Oh well.
Ooh, it actually read the disc.
I can't reformat it to its original size. Even though it's a rewritable.
It's giving me the option to erase the disc. Is this the option that will remove everything off the disc?
Not sure. I haven't used CDRW's for a while. TIme to Google, I think.
Yep.
Welp, this has been quite the experience.
Made more difficult by my lack on knowledge as to what I'm doing.
It would be easier to google if my mouse would start cooperating.
Erasing it will remove everythin.g You can't reformat it because that would erase everything as well. It erases in large blocks, so easiest just to erase and start from there.
OK.
OK, this is the EXACT reason I hate wireless Mice. It just keeps stopping.
I need a new battery.
Netflix had they hackday http://variety.com/2017/digital/news/netflix-hack-day-2017-behind-the-scenes-1202540934/
LOL. I just read the Biohacking Summit blog post. They talk about sleep, exercise, nutrition, etc. Biohacking to me is more like building electronics to implant and experimenting at home with things like gene expression and DNA engineering through CRISPR/Cas9....
sleep/exercise/nutrition are working within our bodies' existing capacities
"hacking" to me means changing or adding something
ie implanting magnets and circuitry and stuff
I don't want soylent, I want to be a cyborg
@runic elbow -- smartest thing I ever did was buy a wired mouse. Was recharging the batteries in the wireless constantly.
Went to rechargeable because I was throwing out 2 batteries a month
@crude trench wireless mouses have gotten way more efficient over the last while, I have a fairly standard Microsoft set and the batteries last months. I use rechargeable batteries too
@polar wraith not sure if this news article interests your space-stuffs http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/meteor-meteorite-bc-alberta-fireball-1.4275131
Thanks, @abstract violet - saw that in my news feed this morning!
Oh my.
hey, does anyone have an SVG (or decent b/w image), of the Boxy character/logo from Adabox004? I figure with the new box shipping soon, I should probably finish my 004 project, and it sure would save me some time.
oops...meant Boomy character
maybe @thin rose does @sturdy oyster
hey @sturdy oyster I have the artwork for the pin and the 3d print i can send. both differ in sizes, how are you planning to use it?
I was working on 2d print template for the box but never quite finished it, requires a bit of formatting
Thanks @thin rose I've built the basic wooden "box" part, and I was going to cnc carve the Boomy face onto the front. of the box with the two speakers I have for eyes.
the white "idea" box that ships with it
@sturdy oyster nice! a wooden box sounds classy. ok, gimme me a sec to upload the SVG to the boomy learn guide.
You're the best @thin rose thanks a ton
@sturdy oyster no worries, go grab it here โ https://learn.adafruit.com/boomy-the-boombox/3d-printing#svg-artwork PS: I'd love to see it when it's complete ๐
sure thing @thin rose hoping to get to it by the weekend. I'll post a pic once it's done.
awesome! I look forward to it @sturdy oyster. Thanks @thin rose
Oh, I almost forgot to say, thanks for helping me find the drivers, Dan.
@runic elbow ok, so it worked(?). Great! You're welcome.
for makers here is something to watch https://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Microsoft-Research/The-Edge-of-Machine-Learning-Resource-efficient-ML-in-2-KB-RAM-for-the-Internet-of-Things as @dire axle have done some Jupyter stuff so and @tranquil sedge too
Trouble strikes again. React OS can't open the CD I put the drivers on.
My Anova sous vide cooker is so wonderful
I can't cook steak to save my life but it's perfectly medium rare. Just finished in butter and garlic in a hot pan.
I was thinking of trying to make one with a slow cooker and an Arduino
One of those, must get around to it at some stage projects ๐
I'm sure it's fairly doable. Just have to make sure you have the right algorithm for when to stop heating.
Turns out React OS doesn't supprt the ethernet driver for the motherboard I'm working with.
Because WOW16 applictions aren't supported by NTVDM at the moment.
If anyone in here has people in TX, could I kindly request that you spread this info around? https://twitter.com/RiseUpToHIV/status/902703230349664257
@sigafroos MSL is much more accurate because otherwise you'd have to have a topology map. And MSL is traditionally what pilots use.
@elfin wave Yeah, good point. Moved to #general-chat
@elfin wave are you going to do dual deployment with yours?
oh, the MPL is calibrated down to 50 kPa but operational down to 20
what do you mean?
@elfin wave Dual deployment is for high power rockets that go up a long way. At the top of flight (apogee) the first charge separates a two sections and a drogue chute comes out. When the rocket falls to about 600 AGL another charge fires and deploys a large main chute (thus the need for an altimeter).
ah, that's what I thought. I'm doing a high altitude balloon, which is filled with hydrogen and let go
there will be a chute but I haven't gotten that far yet in my plans
Nice! Remember that commercial GPS devices are altitude limited. They won't work above a certain altitude (I think 27,000 feet) so they can't be used in missiles.
mine is just to see how high it goes! (well, GPS should give me that too, but I've seen conflicting things on accuracy above certain heights)
yeah
You can get GPS sensors that work up to, well, orbit, but they're expensive and require paperwork.
I read something somewhere (the most reliable source!) that some GPS modules still operate as long as they meet certain requirements, either transmission speed, accuracy, etc. but I'm not planning on it working
as long as it starts to work again on the way down so I can recover the payload
Totally. There's also radio direction finding. IIRC there's a UK web site dedicated to high altitude ballooning and they have great information.
I can't read music though I want to make some melodies using the arduino tone() function. Is there a repo for tunes that I can reference?
this is impressive! https://boingboing.net/2017/09/05/how-to-decode-the-images-on-th.html
That's really cool, @swift hatch !!
@hollow oasis I'm not familiar with any but I'm sure they exist. I've never messed around with audio....
@polar wraith yeah, UKHAS is awesome. but they can't use APRS in balloons in the UK so that isn't documented there, and apparently nobody in the US is good with putting things on the internet
I'm definitely planning to have a few libraries and adafruit guides eventually
I'm also thinking that LoRa probably would have been fine and would have saved a lot of time and money but hey, sunk cost fallacy ๐
@elfin wave That's surprising, but yes, I didn't find any good references.
And I'm thinking of adding LoRa to the system so it can broadcast its location. Iridium is too heavy (and expensive).
possibly ironically, the only manufacturer of 144.390 MHz (US APRS) transmitters that I could find was based in the UK, and sold through uputronics, which is run by someone active in the UKHAS community
last my package tracking app alerted me it had landed in JFK, at least
NICE!!! Let me know how that works out, please.
oh yeah, I'm gonna become a regular on show and tell
I was thinking how it was weird that the project was almost done, and then I realized... oh yeah, I have to turn a radio module into something that can broadcast GPS coordinates using a specific protocol
Heh, yes, that's pretty important! How many cameras are you going to use?
I think just one
today at lunch I'd like to get some test code working with the gps (unfortunately a ublox, not adafruit, and honestly I'm feeling the pain a bit), so that I can use the SD interface to write to a file specified by the power on timestamp
and then take pictures
Good plan! I need to find and download the Python libraries for these boards. If they exist. ๐
ooh, just found http://nearsys.com/pubs/book/index.htm
That looks cool @elfin wave - I'll have to read it after work!
made it to #4 in pubg... didn't fire a single shot
also no clue where the person who shot me was. I was mostly hopping tree to tree and hoping nobody would notice
SneakySigafoos
I saw one person, and as I prepared to engage I saw them explode into a pile of red mist. so.
@thin rose and @pedro Thinking of y'all. Keep your heads down.... And let us know if you need anything.
@elfin wave so tempted ๐ got a release candidate and bundle to release now though
Yeahhh I figured it was working hours for you so I didn't want to tempt.
It's so much less fun solo with my play style. At least we got to, like, hang out.
I found an amazingly protected tree though.
@polar wraith thank you for having us in your thoughts, much appreciated! ๐ we're stocked up on essentials and keeping a close eye on the reports. most likely will setup shutters tomorrow
@thin rose Sounds good. It looks like it's going to go right up the East shore and then head straight for SC/NC....
@elfin wave thanks for sparing me ๐
@spice moss Thanks for passing along the link to the ML in 2K. Looking forward to watching ๐
Yeah, stay safe @thin rose. Where are you guys located? My sister is in Palm Beach Gardens and is flying up here (Chicago) on Friday with her twin toddlers. I was trying to figure out what flight they were on and saw that almost all (15 of 16) the flights are sold out. Crazy.
@stuck moth I'm looking forward to going to the Seattle mini-makerfaire...looking forward to knowing about meet ups/chats..๐
@thorny niche It's going to be great to put faces with all the names!
@polar wraith I look forward to meeting you.
I've met with Scott and TonyD already. I'll probably get to meet Adam soon. It will be fantastic to meet up with others, too!
If anyone finds themselves in Ireland let me know ๐
@indigo jetty I wish I would find myself in Ireland!
have you guys open laptop to clean it?
@spice moss Oh, sure. It's usually not dirty inside EXCEPT that there's often a bunch of fuzz at the grille next to the fan. I have removed 3cm of fuzz and lint (almost like felt). Removing it made the laptop run much cooler.
Sometimes that's easily accessible through a hatch, sometimes you have to take the bottom off or take the keyboard off. However, there are videos on YouTube about dissassembling almost any laptop. Dell (and prob other manufacturers) also have detailed service manuals.
those service manual usually have guide to remve small part of it
I had to reapply thermal paste to the heat sink of a laptop before
Was maybe 5 years or so old
(the laptop, not me ๐)
I opened and cleaned out the fuzz @fair summit talks about, but it was still running way too warm so tried replacing the thermal paste and it worked much better
Some day @polar wraith !
I want to visit West coast US at some stage too!
(although I was in LA when I was about 10)
We very nearly went to san fransico 3 or 4 years ago but it was more expensive to go there for one week than Cuba for 2 weeks all inclusive
@indigo jetty I have a high-end Razer laptop (not for gaming, though, for software development) and it has an NVIDIA 1060 graphics card. When the laptop starts to heat up it sounds like a jet about to take off!
Haha, my mac is pretty quiet, but it doesn't have a 1060!
Blade with Jet-Engines
I preferred taking my dell laptop apart, most the screws were the same. unlike the hp where almost every one was different. Mine also used foam pads and not thermal paste
@plush musk Glad she got out! I heard lots of flights were cancled. We're out in Royal Palm Beach, fairly inland. Currently finishing setting up our shutters upstairs.
@thin rose I get news that Florida NHL team went to evac
@spice moss yeah, sounds like last work day for every body will be later today, early friday.
Oh, hey, I've actually ben there-ish, @thin rose
@bold turtle yea it's about a 30-40min drive away from the beaches, about 13miles
Soon you guys have 3D Printed flood wall in place
@thin rose the company I worked for when I lived in MIA had a thing at Madison Green. The IT guy (me) got to come along for a free lunch ๐
@bold turtle oh nice! our house is actually apart of a village in madison green ๐
I know we talked about on #general-chat before, but this is disappointing
Gender break down of my YouTube views for the last 90 days
I mentioned the last time too another YouTuber showed his stats and it was the same
I'm not surprised it's lower, but I'm am still surprised by how much lower it is
(just from the difference in the workplace and college for technology rolls)
"e. In this work, we design a completely inaudible attack,
DolphinAttack, that modulates voice commands on ultrasonic
carriers (e.g., f > 20 kHz) to achieve inaudibility. By leveraging
the nonlinearity of the microphone circuits, the modulated lowfrequency
audio commands can be successfully demodulated, recovered,
and more importantly interpreted by the speech recognition
systems"
@indigo jetty I was talking to someone yesterday and they were saying how they don't know of any girls currently studying electrical or computer engineering (leaving me to quietly be like I'm EE) but it is really true. A lot of technology fields are really lacking girls, and to that point, a lot of girls in technical fields don't do anything else technical beyond the work/school day
All the time, even in environments that are strictly engineers, it's always assumed that I am biomedical because I'm a girl or I'm mechanical because it's incredibly popular
Looking forward to a startrek future!
@ocean ingot im certain that a big factor is the media and how they portray women
im an early supporter of feminist frequency, not sure if you've heard of anita
If we can get to a Star Trek future that would be fantastic
the next startrek captain is a lady!
also B'elanna torres is one of my favourite engineers in the show
I love my iPhone, but it doesn't have a headphone jack! So I decided to add my own. For real. How I made an iPhone in China video: https://youtu.be/leFuF-zoV...
yay for the maker team ๐ ( also, open source: https://github.com/strangeparts/niubi-headphones )
@stuck moth the guy from above used KiCAD!
woo!
ughhh I bought a ublox neo6m gps module as an amazon gold box and am having so much trouble getting it to work. looking at their forums I might not even have a legit ublox and may have been sold a knockoff.
this is what I get for not going with the ultimate gps in the first place
(and of course it's out of stock on adafruit now)
what's not working @elfin wave
the GPS ๐
I'll have to connect it to my ftdi friend when I get home
because I did before and got valid NMEA sentences, but the NeoGPS library can't connect to serial
I know I have but I didn't necessarily know what I was doing at the time
does the unit have a usb interface?
the gps, no, but I'm using an uno if you meant the microcontroller
wha... the tinygps example isn't printing any data, and isn't giving me the "no data" error. which I thought were the two options.
hmm
ah ๐
thank you for the help, though. I was mostly venting (else this would be in #help-with-projects ) but for some reason hadn't thought to go back to tinygps
I had a similar issue with NeoGPS library with a Neo7m? i think.. that one had a usb interface to debug with ucenter..
neogps seems really great if you want interrupts, configurability, to make it as tiny as possible, etc
I'm going to be polling like once a sec. tinygps should be good enough.
what are you building?
I had a openlog unit lying around and i hooked my gps unit up with it.. made for a really portable sd-card logger -- eventually want to make it into something i can run whilst taking photos for geotagging
nice!
a high altitude balloon, so this will relay coordinates down to me and also log things so I can do fancy dataviz later
@polar wraith how is your circuitpython rockets coming along?
@spice moss So so. I'm running out of memory on the board I'm using, so I think I'll have to switch platforms. That means I'll have to redesign the electronics bay on the rocket. ๐
or wait for the M4 @polar wraith
@stuck moth That is certainly an option. If I were to design my own M4 board what hardware requirements would I need to meet to put CircuitPython on it?
Or is it better to just wait? ๐
designing your own would only help if you could get the chips
LOL You're absolutely right
we'll likely release ours once we have chips
And yours is dramatically more likely to, you know, work.
you could use a different M4 though
True. I dunno. That would be a lot of learning and mistakes. It's probably more reasonable to do development and testing on, say, a RPi3 and then port to the M4 board when it's released for the flight articles.
Rosie in a rocket hmmm
Hmm, a thought. It would be cool if Adafruit had pre-orders for hot items, like the M4 boards....
My How To Be A Digital Revolutionary bracelet arrived today. I like it! But my dang AMAB wrist is big enough for it to not close easily/fully. I might need to hack the band to be bigger.

Track 6 of the audiovisual album Oscilloscope Music available at http://oscilloscopemusic.com What you see is what you hear: The audio signal is fed directly...
Apparently you can plug it into an oscciliscope, and depending on the settings, it will display exactly this.
I hope I spelled oscciliscope correctly.
Grrrrr. Running into library problems with the rocket flight computer. Latest: BNO055 throws OSerror 19 during register write in initialization. ๐ฆ

The virus screwed up my Windows. Now it thinks it's booting off a Windows Vista CD. When there isn't even anything in the drive.
Stupid imgburner screwed everything up.
was your windows machine vista?
No, it was Windows 7.
so you dont have win7 disc?
I know that there is Win10 Iso what could help
and media creation tool what can make you a bootable usb-stick
I'm not downloading anything from the internet unless I know for sure it's OK.
Someone suggesting Imgburner is exactly how I got myself in this issue.
I might check that out later.
may the coffee lake be with you https://www.overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/intel_coffee_lake_cpus_are_expected_to_launch_in_early_october_-_leaked_prices/1
@polar wraith and @stuck moth so RPI with Adafruit stuff and run rosie there and .net what control circuitpython boards in a rocket? sounds like a plan https://carlos.mendible.com/2017/09/01/toggle-raspberry-pi-gpio-pins-with-asp-net-core-20/
Today I'll show you how to Toggle Raspberry Pi GPIO Pins with ASP.NET Core 2.0
@indigo jetty have you known Ruuvitag?
no I hadnt, just looking at it now
lookds pretty cool
I think i did see this before actuall
@spice moss You need at least three circuits (usually more): 9DOF IMU to generate quaternions to detect apogee; pressure altimeter to detect a set height above the ground; and firing circuits for setting off the explosive decoupling charges. It's also a good idea to have a data logger, temperature sensor, camera, GPS, and a radio transmitter.
I also want NeoPixels visible from outside so you can tell the status of the rocket by looking at it - particularly after arming the explosives.
think having light pipe from neopixels to outside
Thought of that. I can also do a transparent panel on the fuselage so the NeoPixels shine through.
I'm already getting issues with running out of global var space on my Uno. gonna need to actually code things properly, I think ๐
I haven't even added the camera library yet
@elfin wave just upgrade to something with more memory, its the App developer way ๐
I mean that was my first thought
but so far I've been tossing libraries on without a care, and instantiating variables wherever
it happened when I used the tinygps++ one
yeah your probably right, but there is just so much more memory in basically everything else ๐
M0 or esp8266 has 3 or 4 times as much
I think its something like 16k versus 50k for uno vs M0
I could be using a feather for this??
@night crescent http://www.qwantz.com/comics/comic2-3190.png
Uno has 2K of Sram and 32 of Flash
MKRZero (which i think is the same chip as the M0 metro/feather) has 32KB of Sram and 256Kb of flash
ill be honest, im not sure which one is the most important, either way its big difference
@polar wraith for me I do it with drones and landing pads

Grrrrrrrr...I hate logic errors. Just spent a good half hour trying to figure out why the functions in my motor class was not working. stepped through every stage and could not understand why the variables were weird values. Turns out, when I was moving the variables from public to private in the class, I moved them up two lines too far and declared them as globals rather than class variables. On the bright side, it works now, but AAAAAAARRGGGGG. Just had to get that off my chest.
GLOBAAAAAAAALS. Fire 1, Fire 2, Fire 3.... Targets destroyed Sir.
