its for the different modes, of the bno085 where in i2c u connect to sda etc, but uvc u connect to the rx
wanting both options
in that one your gp13-15 are all connected to GND, that's what the red dots show
ooh
ok yea thats a probkem
here is what i need
wiring options for both of these
Board 3V to sensor VIN (red wire)
Board GND to sensor GND (black wire)
Board SCL to sensor SCL (yellow wire)
Board SDA to sensor SDA (blue wire)
Board 3V to BNO085 Vin (Red Wire).
Device GND to BNO085 GND (Black Wire)
Device RX to BNO085 SDA (Blue Wire)
Board 3V to BNO085 P0 (Purple Wire).
ive already done the first one, im trying to have an option for the second one
is it best to have 2 headers to short, one for the sda and one for the 3v
i don't understand why you want to short SDA, that's your data line
if you want to reset the chip that's what RST is generally for.
i mean i need both modes avalible
i2c and RVC
why not use a SPST switch instead of a jumper?
whats this?
a regular switch you flip
ooh, but how would I wire that in the back ends?
cause these are the events that need to happen when switch is flipped
SCL is cancelled
SDA rerouted to RX
P0 is shorted
You could also directly solder it down with male header pins for a permanent connection.
i decided to use the pico anyway, but the whole point was to not solder anything permanetnly, i should have been more clear
Ah, one approach is pogo pins and these clamps https://www.adafruit.com/product/2456
I think in that case, your best bet is pin headers in corresponding female socket headers.
Theres a WT32-SC01 on Ali-express that looks really...interesting. Anyone ever use one of those?
ESP32 + a 3.5" screen 🤔
I wish phones had some kind of pass through mode where you could use them as dumb usb drive
I have one at work, it's pretty ok-ish except for the GPIO is brought out to a weird header size, so my male-male pins get a little crowded. The display update speed isn't great (it's a SPI display), but it's nice to have classic Bluetooth unlike a lot of the other similar devices. There is a WT32-SC01+ (plus) and a MakerFabs board both using the ESP32-S3 and a parallel LCD interface instead of SPI. They have much better performance, but much fewer pins to work with. On the MakerFabs screens, all that's available is the I2C and two GPIO pins. I haven't looked closely at the WT32-SC01+ but I assume the situation is similar owing to most of the pins being taken up by the parallel interface.
Nice to hear from someone who has experience with it. I did look at the SC01+ just to have around
My next project should literally be the largest PIC (40 pin) I can find, with the largest memory I can find, and make my own Dev board display lol
I'm hoping someday for an ESP32-P4 based display board, should be a nice bump up from the S3
The controller was just barely announced though, so prolly be a while before it makes it into products
I was going to use a 40 pin PIC for a pinball project but then I realized I prefer the AVR architecture
You should make the windows XP space cadet pinball machine real
Mine was the "All your Base Are Belong To Us" pinball. You'd rack up bases, then when the ball drained, it'd count them up "Base, base, base, base, base, you have no chance to survive make your time"
You might find this comical @late fulcrum https://youtu.be/yOAp4pDDRyU
Fight back old skool style!
I reckon RP2040 PIO could offload all the refresh work for DRAM.
PIO could do DMA with SPI so even better
Just pump data into the DMA registers as fast as you can and offload with PIO
Well, grump. I've subscribed to Diyode magazine ever since its first issue, even though a mail subscription from Australia was expensive. But this issue is their last print issue.
🥲
😢 I think I killed my programmer for my micro's. RIP and the newest one is $70 😬
Should I add security key auth to my app
I already added code sign on
@dusty citrus o/
ok thanks
Does every project feel like you just have to buy more things
for the mos part yea, until you have stock of common parts. But then you need a SMPS or a special op-amp or a bigger micro..etc
Mine doesn't
I run my own online dashboard
When my local Radio Shack closed, I bought all their carded stock so I have my own Radio Shack now. I figured I'd never need to buy parts again. I was wrong.
Even if I need to do two factor auth
I just use my phone
Even on laptop
They use ble to exchange keys via the chrome browser
I don't buy yubikeys
I tried assembling a U2F Zero but then realized I had to run a DOS-only program to initialize it
The chrome browser cross requesting key via ble is good cz I have a inbuilt security key on my phone
This doesn’t sound like a very good practice from a cybersecurity standpoint. It can just get a key over BLE? Do you have to unlock your phone or can it request it without you touching your phone?
You need to unlock your phone
Then auth with your lock screen or biometric
And you need to initiate it from the browser too
Ah okay, that’s slightly better.
When 2FA really ends up becoming more like 3FA or 4FA on your end of the equation.
Speaking of parts, it figures the one time I splurge on 2nd Day Air it gets delayed somehow (it’s been at the local hub since Sunday) with no update in sight
It be that way sometimes
I usually cancel the os native security key prompt
Then chrome browser security key prompt pops up and I select my linked phone
Then on my phone there's a notification that says a site wants to verify you
I click the notification then it connect to my laptop via ble and I auth with my fingerprint then just like normal U2F it exchanges the keys and so
Do you get your money back if it doesn't arrive in time for the additional shipping charge? Like can you ask for a refund on that?
From Digi-Key? I’ve never tried
from anywhere
I need the parts to make more of IcyBlue to send 1-2 to CrowdSupply
I just need buttons D:
I bought like 500 of them
Opps
It doesn't works with python package repos, pypi.org
ah thanks for the reminder i need more tall 6mm's
It just times out
Buttons are essential
I bought 500
Lol
I need some 10 or 11mm tall for the tr-cowbell due to enclosure height but only place i can find them is in a pack with a ton of other sizes
and the multi color caps for them
because i like the way the multicolor ones look, makes it look more fun.
Here ya go
Actually these are what you want https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/CT110217.0F100/16607629
Much much taller lol
Actually can a rp2040 function as a yubikey
i was searching tactile switches then sorting by height and that resolves very little. was going about the search in the wrong order.
11.5 is perfect actually because that's the tallest one i have in the assorted pack i got and they fit almost flush to the top of the enclosure.
i actually designed that part of the enclosure around that specific button height.
whew thank you 🙂
next revision i'll probably go with some khail switches instead.
actually, nvm i don't think i'm going to do anymore of the current revision anyway due to the mcp23017 debacle. might as well redesign the entire thing from the ground up anyway.
the button caps add just a tiny bit more height, just the right amount 😉
Ah
some of the first batch didn't have the tall buttons because i hadn't designed the enclosure yet
like the one JP got has those really soft gel top buttons that feel like cats paws.
kind of experimented with different button types
Ah okay
It’s snowing
And blowing
And setting up massive drifts in front of my garage door
wow what section of 'the' country is that?
Utah
(haven't looked at today's wx yet for the nation (usa) as a whole.
Okay utah that make sense.
I think the Bitterroot forest is near Montana in the south. Friend lived there. wait that's idaho I thing. oops idaho != utah
We haven’t had snow on the ground for the last few weeks
Mostly just in the mountains off from where I am
between NV and CO shame on me! I lived in CO - my friend in SW MT - I am getting old that I brain-buffed Utah entirely. Darn.
I lived in Wyoming for a period of my life
Then South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina..
Yeah I thought you were maybe in SC which was why I asked.
I was in NC when I joined this server
aha so I'm not entirely wrong. ;)
I think 'Bruno' the glider plane guy is in that area near the resorts
More than likely
A popular super car social media influencer lives not terribly far from where I live
he skims the ridgelines and travels a very long way laterally.
He just built a massive house with a huge two level garage
pretty sure this is him: https://www.youtube.com/@BrunoVassel
Next to those 'ride a real train' vids that last for hours, this is a timesink for me on YT watching the full flight bruno makes. ;)
Snow? what is this snow you speak of?
"Florida man..." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Man)
Hey! I'm from Florida!
from what I've seen, you are sensible enough to never appear in one of those headlines
I grew up in gator land
Cool that someone else actually recognized gatorland in that gif ❤️
If you look close you can see there are like 20-30 gators in it.
I think you give all Floridians too much credit. Any one of us could appear in a headline at any time. Thats what makes this place so exciting. 😅
I’m from the part of Florida with science
I was born in Florida, spent part of my childhood there too
Its still Florida though. Even a female astronaut drove across state lines to murder a woman. Wearing a space suit so she didnt have to stop for the restroom. I think its the air here.
Waking up at 3am to see the shuttle launch was a real treat
I missed this headline
Look it up. Yup, that happened. 🏝️
Florida is a magical place, but not all that magic is Disney magic.
Gator magic is the most dangerous part
I’d say the thing driving Floridians crazy is the swamp gas
That and all the stink from the grass farms 🙂
Model A+ RPi in stock https://www.adafruit.com/product/4027
Welp, figured pi 4 aren’t coming until later this year and CM4’s probably not for another year.. a 3 A+ should work for what I want
Got some new LiPos too
Wyoming is pretty!
Wyoming is a conspiracy to trick people into enjoying nature 🙂
My favorite thing about Wyoming is the jokes about how it doesn’t actually exist and that it’s just false memories out there by the government
But Wy(oming) ?
What's the benefit of a dedicated USB sniffer like the miniSniffer2 as opposed to a more general logic analyzer? The DSLogic Plus is only $30 more and can be used for things other than USB sniffing. Obviously the miniSniffer2 has dedicated USB input/output, whereas the logic analyzer would need bare wires to connect to, but still.
Is the adafruit website down?
The main advantages to a sniffer/analyzer like that are a) it decodes the transactions to give a higher level view of what's going on, and b) it can record the data from long intricate transactions and log them for various kinds of downstream analysis.
They're both useful tools, there have been times when something was violating the protocol, and the analyzer didn't catch it, because it assumed everyone was obeying the specifications, but a logic analyzer clearly showed what was really going on.
working here. which specific site?
I saw a post (can't grab link rn unfortunately) where someone was able to export the DSLogic data as a PCAP file and look at it in Wireshark. Would that not privide the same high-level overview as the sniffer?
I was searching gyros in the shop and it started taking forever to load and then just not loading, it loads on my phone tho, so i think something is just wrong with my internet 😭 sorry for the false alarm
I'm speaking in generalities. The decoding capabilities might vary or they might not. The DSLogic may have limits on how much data it can work with, etc.
Ah, k
no worries. sometimes there are intermittent network things that happen. if it continues to act up, can reply back here.
@slender canopy I see you have an ezSniffer (the previous version of the one I'm looking at). Have you liked it so far? How's the software?
I don't have a lot of experience in a wheel chair. Would a standard doorframe be considered uncomfortably narrow?
I'm designing something to cal Ada specs but I also want it to be comfortable
I don't know that there is a "standard doorframe"
So, standard wheelchairs are about 75cm across in memory's sake
My new place has 90cm hallways
to especially accommodate my wheelchair
yeah, I think 36" is ADA (US)
I thought ADA was 40”?
I lived in an ADA compliant apartment once and the bathroom door was definitely bigger than 36”
Maybe it was a design choice
(min 32" in a doorway) https://www.ada.gov/law-and-regs/design-standards/1991-design-standards/
Yeah
how do i know the power of a servo
like how much power the s ervo has, not how much it needs
really wishing I took a DSP class rn
what is the best way to back up code off of a pico
i have it connected to thronny and stuff, i basiclly wanna copy its whole disk
@limpid sedge MicroPython or CircuitPython?
From the manufacturer's data sheet, it should specify the available torque
micro
cool! thanks
`import machine
import utime
servo = machine.PWM(machine.Pin(4))
servo.freq(50)
def interval_mapping(x, in_min, in_max, out_min, out_max):
return (x - in_min) * (out_max - out_min) / (in_max - in_min) + out_min
def servo_write(pin,angle):
pulse_width=interval_mapping(angle, 0, 180, 0.5,2.5)
duty=int(interval_mapping(pulse_width, 0, 20, 0,65535))
pin.duty_u16(duty)
while True:
for angle in range(180):
servo_write(servo,angle)
utime.sleep_ms(20)
for angle in range(180,-1,-1):
servo_write(servo,angle)
utime.sleep_ms(20)
`
how do i up the speed? its for a servo
how do i make a serial connection to the pico? I want to copy all the files of off it
nvm just got it
And that's comfortable?
It's super spacious!
Good! Thank you.
Why so many starlink satellite
@fierce prawn cause its starlink 🤣
What it's doing is writing an angle, waiting for a bit, then writing a new angle. So to speed it up, just reduce the sleep_ms() value
My guess is that they were recently launched from a single rocket, so they're still in the process of spreading out to their individual final orbits.
Is there a guideline for the amplitudes you should use for the formants used to construct a phoneme?
If you thought Sam Zeloof was neat and wanted to work with him, he launched a company https://atomicsemi.com/careers/
And he’s hiring out of San Francisco
Go make cool semiconductor mini fabs
That means more coverage ?
less downtime I guess
Heh, I saw "Sam Zeloof" and thought "Paul Zaloom", who would be fun to work for
👋 @late fulcrum
Yes, they want to cover the Earth 24/7, so they want to be spread out.
Wait so satellite drives themselves
I thought they just float around
Mostly they're orbiting, but yes, they do have maneuvering thrusters
Won't the fuel ends
Most starlink satellites have a lifespan of maybe a year or two
Yeah, the fuel doesn't last forever, but once they're in position, it doesn't take much to keep them there.
Eventually they’ll run out of fuel and burn up in the atmosphere
Just to be clear, they orbit around the Earth very fast, not float in place. The thrusters just let them slowly change orbits.
So that's why I the video I see a bunch of them moving fast
Yup, around the whole Earth in about 90 minutes.
Actually can I own one satellite without shooting them out
It would be fun for experiment
Cube sat?
All the local brick and mortar shops got restocked with Pi4 4GB models a week or so ago. Could have picked up a few cycling between them if I wanted.
You can extract a UF2 of the entire device on RP2040 (tinyuf2 doesn't have the feature though)
Using picotool

Yes, cubesats are often batched up in launches so you can share a rocket, etc. They're still expensive, though, even a small one is probably $50k to build and launch, plus a lot of paperwork and operational stuff.
Would be cool to do all the work to make something launch ready
Terrible routing, who did that board layout? 😜
Canva lol
looks good
treeeeees
Lol
Reminds me slightly of this
Thoughts on this? It's like half the price of the Beagle USB 12 (I don't mind it being used, assuming it works lol)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/265833221770
There's also this one, which seems really good, although I can't find a ton about it online aside from what's on the official product page (partly because it appears to be a mostly Chinese product, so there aren't many English reviews) https://www.walmart.com/ip/USB-Packet-Viewer-Portable-USB-Protocol-AnalyzerUSB-Packet-Viewer/2827244003
Saw this on Adafruit's blog today. The future might just be far more advanced than any of us imagined. https://youtu.be/dPg_o-g-H2s
A new type of robot can change between solid and liquid forms on demand, to achieve a range of different goals
thanks
I dunno if the future can be as advanced as I imagine
What if I don't want a T2: Judgement Day future?
We’re only 20 years away!
Lol. I need to watch The Lego Movie
It’s good fun
We're already in Cowboy Bebop timeline... Fae is sleeping
Lol..
Me: complains about UPS on twitter
UPS: “provide us some information so we can tell you exactly what you already know!”
derp
It’s usually what happens
You give them tracking and stuff and they tippy tappy on their computer and find out that it’s delayed and they don’t know when you’ll get it
😦
Been this way since Monday. Like did someone just kick it under the conveyor table or something
So helpful
I personally blame the company and not the employees
Oh yeah, nothing they can do if they're not given the information or tools to get the information
Unless the employee just has an issue with people named “Seth” and said “heck with this man and his parts”
In that case, what the heck Darren
Frick
Nah, it's a dude in the warehouse named "De'lay" holding it up... The site just can't render it properly. 😛
Got past these stories about 2020 written in 1970, at least...
If you haven’t seen the new Antman movie, this is a reference that will make sense after you watch it
Can confirm
*Except 2049, because it was trash.
...actually, a Lego remake might be better.
shrugs
As long as it’s not written by AI
lel
I don’t have 3 years to do it XD stop motion takes ages
I assumed the original script was...
Or something about 1000 monkeys and 1000 typewriters.
I’d also watch that result in Lego form.
Infinite monkeys on infinite typewriters gives you Shakespeare
I deny this logic, Kyoshii... What you'd actually end up with is a room full of chaos, dead monkeys and smashed tyepwriters.
Amusingly, the Lego Star Wars Christmas Special is a solid improvement on the original Star Wars Christmas Special
See? Great movie.
Hah
How is that possible when the Star Wars Holiday Special is the most perfect thing in all of existence?
Ooh. lol
I need to rewatch
You have some time before Xmas.
The Lego Star Wars Christmas special is very whimsical, I enjoyed it
Talking of Star Wars.. I should get back on SWTOR.
I also enjoyed the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special too
I can't wait to move and set up my music/streaming rig
I can’t wait to work for myself so I don’t have to feel the existential dread of tracking my hours
For me it can be a bit annoying because I have difficulty internally motivating myself
A mood
bicycle bottle dynamos usually attach one terminal to the frame and the other to the wire that goes to the bulb. They usually produce AC so one time current starts its flow in the wire, the other time in the frame. Would it also worked if two terminals were attached to the frame, one above the other, the same with the bulb?
I can motivate myself when I actually enjoy what I’m doing
The feeling of having my time surveilled causes intense amounts of anxiety
Totally!
Like I would love to work on my CrowdSupply campaign so I can launch it sometime this month, but work takes up 40hrs if my week and my kids another large amount
Lol..
There's a Monty Python joke in there somewhere.
Oof
Unfortunately they are 1700 miles away
Glad my kids don't require much attention, besides hay and water.
❤️
I wish Embedded World Conference wasn’t in Europe
I also wish going to conferences was more affordable
I’m going to attempt to go to supercon this year though
I wish I lived in Europe
And I'm trying to bounce to the US as soon as I can.. lol
I wish the fear of bad people wasn’t used to inhibit the movement of people around the world.
It makes travel inaccessible to a huge chunk of the world
UPS says my $174 order is lost 😞
So I tried to send a message and Discord crashed that's fun
Shipping costs here are so expensive :/ Half that DK order was shipping, and it was a $50 order
I should have just gone with USPS…
Now to wait for Digi-Key to contact UPS to confirm the package is lost. Once confirmed then it’ll be another week before I get my parts.. ugh…
Thankfully Digi-Key is so awesome
I hope Adafruit appreciates the number of small things I buy from them... LOSE, buy new ones, and then find the original. I'm darn near buying every project twice at this point.
Currently missing an eye spy cable I just bought, and some feather stacking headers that I bought sometime ago and no evidence I used them.
Let’s hope UPS doesn’t lose my Adafruit order too.
Oh I don't mean UPS, I mean my desk.
Well and possibly on the eye spy cable it might have been my ferret, seems like something he'd steal
that's… not how AC works, at least probably not at the frequencies that dynamo is working at. it's more likely that current is flowing in both the wire and the frame at the same time, but the direction is reversing on each cycle. for what you propose to work, the AC frequency would have to be so high that the wavelength is on the order of the distance between the two terminals that you attach to the frame
I know, I’m just frustrated by UPS
I'm still waiting on my Pi from Pimoroni, been about 3 weeks and they didn't provide any tracking.
Royal Mail?
Royal Mail international shipping was having issues due to a ransomware attack
ordered on Jan 20th but see now it didn't ship until Feb 6.
so not quite 3 weeks but feels like a month since that's when i ordered it. they recommend only reaching out after 3 weeks have passed.
It just says international standard, nothing about royal mail.
International standard is very likely Royal mail
no octoprint yet 😦
but i did get some new 2040 aluminum extrusions to try to extend the print bed.
need a custom cut bed and carriage plate. thinking about using sendcutsend or whatever that new metal service is called.
as long as i give them accurate 3D files that should work.
That reminds me, I need to finish disassembling my old 3D printer to harvest for parts
(for a new one)
I bought an old all in one model a while back and I want to be able to easily mod it and such so I'm deciding to break it down and remake it from scratch, just need some sort of guide to follow
i have an old anet a8 i never got to use, not a single time. everything rusted including the lead screws. whatever isn't acrylic is just rust.
ohno
working with extrusion is a lot like working with lego technics. it's all just bolt together stuff very easy. the older style arcylic ones from like 8 years ago were just too hard to modify. aluminum extrusion for the base, axis, and gantry really is the way to go.
why does the wave of AC kinda looks like PWM?
That's what I'm looking for, ultimately
except cut in half horizontally
you mean a sine wave?
yeah
2 phase is opposite sine waves, 3 phase is 3 waves.
what do you mean by cut in half? are you looking at rectified AC?
PWM can modulate the peak to peak pulses, hence pulse width. AC expects a specific wave frequency.
a lot of things in electricity look similar, it's all electric.
square waves are just digital sine waves
if you PWM a sine wave, it'll look like a regular sine wave after filtering, but with a DC offset (unless you're doing something that can do bipolar output, or level shifting)
i mean like pwm doesn't go under the x axis like a sine wave so no negative voltage* (normally unless you plug the motor wrong)
yeah a PWM peripheral on most MCUs won't produce negative voltages
Get an opamp, charge pump inverter to generate your negative voltage to supply to your inverting input and bam bobs your uncle
It’s more complicated but I like to oversimplify unfortunately
this is why motor divers have H-bridges: drive both ends of the winding to get the required AC, as long as you don't need to ground one end of the winding
but motor can generate back emf with volateg and amp right? so on an oscilloscope the back pwm signal would looks like ac?
@static flare if you intend on using extrusion with rollers make sure to get V-slot extrusion and not T-slot extrusion. roller wheels for modern printers all use v-roller wheels.
what kind of motor? brushed DC? brushless? induction?
brushed or brushless(when i can afford it)
Okay! I'm considering something similar to a Hypercube design, but I'll need to do more research and find some schematics and instructions and such
with brushed DC, the AC voltage of the back EMF will get commutated, so it will effectively look rectified because the commutator is switching the polarity every rotation (simplifying a lot)
ok do dc motor absolutely need pwm or they break or one can connect one to a gpio and a resistor in series before it?
when i was a kid i broke several dc cheap motors because i didnt know about amps but it is nice to just test if my motor works without having to code to send a pwm signal to it or will that break it too?
most GPIOs don't have anywhere nearly enough current drive capability to drive a DC motor
depending on your specific DC motor, hooking it up to a DC power supply might work, or it might overspeed it, depending on the specs. a lot of "hobby" DC motors are specified to run at a specific voltage, and they might be designed to not overspeed as long as you stay below that voltage
like back then i didn't know anything and would just plug it directly to a 9v battery and it would blow up in a couple of seconds
i assume it was because of a lack of resistor?
yeah lacking a resistor is one possible cause, and/or too much voltage
and just because it was a very cheap 10 centa motor in a 5 dollar r/c?
it's hard to say without seeing the motor
oh it's probably still the same ones in toysrus or walmart 20$ r/c now a day. I just want to make sure to not repeat the mistakes
but Ive seen similar ones on digi-key etc in the 1$ range, as simple as can be, 2 fragile looking solder and a red and black wire
these sort of motor always came with the chepeast possible alkaline battery usually an eveready back then that was marked as "heavy duty" but would be out of juice after the 10 minutes evaluation period
3 or 4 alkaline cells, especially if they're small like AAA or AA, might also have enough internal resistance to limit the current to safe levels for those motors (old Lego Technic motors used 3xC cells with no current limiting, i think)
also, running a motor with no mechanical load is a good way to overspeed it if you're not doing current limiting. if it came attached to a gear box, leave that on while testing to provide at least some mechanical load
that part is always a bit confusing to me, let me find a specific example. Like having the same battery power both the motor and the arduino so it can send pwm to it to drive it but the motors usually need a different voltage. So I have to use a shield because I have no idea how to do it myself
specially sending 2 ground from 2 different circuit is what confuse me
here would be an example
Im confused because the arduino and motor are 2 different voltages yet Id have 2 ground to the same powerback with 2 dfferent voltages. Red is power, black is GND and blue is PWM
or Im supposed to use 2 powerpacks ?
btw I just randomly took the first I could find on google that seemed to be electronics sized, not an actual potential purchase as an example
if I attach a rectangular magnet pole-wise to the spoke of front wheel, will it induce DC inside fork blade? How can I direct it to the LED?
seem my bad drawing killed the convo 🤣
when I told you Im very bad at drawing and I never improved despite taking courses and spending around 6000 hours on it I wasn't joking
Many Arduinos can run on 9V (they have an on-board regulator)
yes but does the voltage of the GND matter ?
the motor was says 24V would it be an issue the GND is 5V from the arduino and 24V from the motor ? Could it trickle back in the GND wire of the arduino and destroy it (ie: like negative voltage/AC)?
Generally it's used as a shared reference, so everything agrees, but in cases where there is significant current flow, you may have to pay attention to voltage drops. Also, on your picture it was 9V, not 24V.
voltage drop? like leds or as in the difference of voltage between the two GND ?
If you check with an oscilloscope's probe tip (leaving the scope input floating with respect to ground) and probe the points you think are ground, you can get a comparison. If they are not close they are not referenced to the 'same' ground.
Risk of smoke when you even try. ;)
That applies to mains powered oscilloscopes using 3 prong interconnect to commercial power. idk what happens with battery-operated oscilloscopes (at all).
The recommendation to test grounds that way came out of Tektronix literature. A scope primer.
https://www.qsl.net/w2aew/XYZs_of_Using_a_Scope.pdf said primer ;)
p.22 lower right has the cited advice.
Hey guys, so i have recorded the power across a load overtime delievered by 3.7V li ion battery, and by recording the power value each second, i have plotted a graph of power vs time. How can i calculate mAh of battery ? (I also have voltage and current for each second logged)
x axis is time in seconds
y axis is power in milliwatts
the jump at 2080 seconds is because I decreased the value of load resistor
End time = 6277 seconds
Summation of all power values = 12699253.07 mW
Is it even possible ?
(to calculate mAh of battery)
These are all the values logged
voltage is voltage across load , current is current through load, power is power across load , time is in seconds
I suspect your summation is using the wrong factor somewhere, as I doubt you were able to pull 12 kilowatts out of that battery. Also you'd expect the answer in watt-hours, not milliwatts.
that figure is just summation of power reading over time , not total power
I WANT to calculate the watt hour and i am asking how do i do that from the values i have
What units are your time?
kw.h are so weird to me that I don't even want to understand the maths. I just use a converter. considering that 1W is 1 joule per second I don't see why they had to overcomplicate it. Like when they says the US uses X GW.h in a year or my electricity bill says my lights used 6 kw.h in a month I get so confused...
if they used like 6 kw.month Id understand that I have to divide it by (365.25/12)2460) to figure out the watt actually used as in j per second
also it seem that every power company has a different definition. seems like the goal is really electricty bills obfuscation
so that you cant tell if there is a correlation between replacing an old stove with a new one that uses less power and see a lower bill
it's the units that the electric company finds most convenient to use for billing.
along with heating degree days and cooling degree days for seasonal comparisons
the only thing i know for sure is that the led bulb above me is rated for around 22w but pulls 23 or 24w from the socket so it uses 0.024kw*h
because no bulb is 100% efficient in real life
just like my 80% rated psu is rated at 650w so it pulls like 800w from the socket
but i dont know how to actually measure it myself so the power company could be making my bill up and I have no way to test
the LED bulb actually probably pulls 22W at the rated voltage. if your line voltage is a little higher, it'll draw slightly more power
incandescent might be 98-99% efficient at turning electricity into heat, not light

On 21 February, #starlink satellite STARLINK-1353 burnt up in the atmosphere. This was miraculously live-streamed by a telescope at the Kitasubaru Astronomical Observatory in Japan. I ran the images through meteor analysis software, and can confirm that this video matches the trajectory of this satellite. When it went through...
Someone captured starlink falling out of orbit
so led light bulbs are just bigger arduino style led lights/neopixels ?
Kind of
did musk really didn't know about solar storms?!
remind me of engineers who disregarded general relativity warnings from scientists and ended up with a cumulative error of 70cm per day in the 1970s...
It’s mostly that it’s unavoidable
with enough armor it can be avoided no?
I mean how did gps that are up there since 1970s survive it ?
Not in LEO, and not given the fact that they’re designed to burn up after a certain amount of time anyway
Im sure a satlink in a satellite armored like an m1a2 sep would survive it..
I see
LEO satellites rarely ever has shielding to protect from solar storms because the missions are considered short term
wait starlink is the name of two types of satellite
It's not that the solar storm fries the satellite, it's that it heats up the atmosphere, which puffs up and causes more drag during the critical period where the satellites are trying to raise their orbits to where they should be.
was that a musk satellite or an old communication satellite with the old starlink for cars?
that fell down ?
Btw for the motors earlier I asked because someone asked about 6 servos the other day in #arduino they were powering a helmet with directly from the arduino
and I knew it was an issue of not enough power but I couldn't explain to them if they needed another battery ppack to connect the batteries to the servo directly and only use the arduino to pwm them
was the super standard sg90s
Sorry I didn`t realize that I know so little of how space works near our planet. I thought the sats were already in orbit and heat is kinda bizare for me when afaik it's around 13Kto 100Kelvins around the planet in space and if I spitted there it would freeze instantly
A lot of space like where the ISS orbits is not terribly hot, in the sun averaging like 50-60F. It’s weird.
isn`t it because there is no items around to accumulate/keep the heat ?
since it`s a (near)vaccum ?
But also even if it’s cold, thermal transfer is so slow it would take years to freeze
Since the first two-hour excursion into space by Yuri Gagarin in 1961, the lure of manned space travel has proved irresistible to scientists, entrepreneurs, and entertainers alike. Today, as technology becomes more capable of enabling manned travel to Mars and Hollywood’s imagination runs wild with notions of humanity’s spaceflight-steeped futur...
where as in the artic there are a lot of matter to keep the heat and the atmosphere also retain it
Wouldn't I lose my heat though throught radiation and that would be the cause of my (quick) death and not the cold?
Obviously Im neglecting other effects like the vacuum taking fluids of me and hard radiation by being unprotected in orbit in space
Also I'd rather it doesn't happen because I don't like seeing that I'm rotating at 14000 mph
You would died of oxygen deprivation before you’d freeze to death
yeah I was neglecting that part just focusing on the temperature thing 😄
Plus possibly other blood/air pressure related issues
Also like I mentionned Im able to ignore that Im rotating at 14000 mph on Earth BUT
I'd rather not see it
And continue to pretend to ignore it
Hypoxia would set in within 15 seconds, you might have a minute of lucidness before drifting into eternal sleep
It's like vertigo for me if I don't see that I'm 100 feet above the ground I'm no scared
But if I do panic sets in
There’s estimated to be about a minute and a half window to save someone from the vacuum
And permanent brain damage
Ive seen astronauts comment on this before saying it's not that quick if the glass break
but I have no arguments to otherwise present
It's still an emergency that would use the jets on their suit for
Yeah
but it's not a 1 minute thing apparently
They were commenting on the movie where that happens in the opening scene
I think chris hadfield was thinking about it ? or the first woman astronaut in the US ? on youtube nasa channel or wired or something similar to this
They say the closest theatrical representation if space decompression and all that was the scene from 2001: a space odyssey, when Dave has to leave the pod to get back on the ship, and he didn't have his helmet.
That could what they were talking about
What surprised me a bit is that they weren't so concerned if someone tether broke off but I don't know why
was aslong the line of probably could be reached by the robotic arm or could probably drift back to the ISS with a speed difference like if they throw something behind them
But apparently using the jets is a very very last resort
I think the movie was gravity (2013) ?
And there is a fight/explosion into the ISS
Yup, that is also a pretty good representation of it the experts have said.
Sandra bullock. Good film.
Most get it very wrong. Like the instant head popping we've seen in some films. Like the OG total recall.
Well they gave it 1/10 for realism
Interstellar was cool though. Tons of science research went into it
especially the jets thing, dying instantly in space, that there would even be a fight, misrepresentation of how gravity works
Ahhh, okay then mulhorand, I stand corrected.
wait did they remake 2001?
I think the people died from impact with the debris
That was my interpretation anyway
No no remake of that one.
Old school movie of course, 1968. Because it came out 55 years ago.
about 4:10 in it actually happens
I kinda enjoyed contact but always thought it was pseudo-sciency and also really disliked 2001 space odyssey because I didn't understand the story that was being told and asked for a refund after 30 minutes but I wasn't on anything
And I was told to fully enjoy the movie "one had to be on mush or a joint" or something
but I was never interested in such things so
The book explains much more.
The monolith was left by aliens. It trained the monkeys, killed ones that failed the mental tests. They created humans. The monoloth on the moon was the test to see if we advance enough. The deep space one was to see who was the chosen one. The star child.
That's it in a nutshell. We are a science experiment.
They created humans through intelligent selection .
I don't know if it counts as a remake but I saw the one where there is a monolith on mars
and it teleports to the artic etc
The second movie. There were a coulme books.
(and I don't want to see more and spoil the ending since it's under the 5yr old movie exemption for spoilers)
I think the movie came out in 2020 or so
You know what space movie terrified me as a kid but I find hilarious now?
Mars Attack
It felt like a remake of space odyssey except with a mix of total recall
Yeah when we went on mars that really shattered my illusions and sprituality
Since then I don't feel that mankind is any special and I don't feel like it's worth spending much money on space anymore
Since our solar system feels empty and boring and not special at all 😦
I mean, it’s pretty wild that we even exist
Yeah but I find it hard to believe in afterlife even though it's special that we exists. But so do cats, or intelligent things like whales and dolphins
A 10% chance every 100 million years in favorable conditions
For the afterlife it's because no one ever came back so who's to say my theory is any more valid than anyone else?
Regardless, life can be made special by enjoying the rarity of our existence
the fact the perfect combination of elements combined just perfectly to create a single cell organism is spectacular.
and the diversity of fauna and flora that spawned from just a single cell is another spectacular thing.
My wife is a biochemist, so i learned alot while she was learning.
Life apparently has the odds of 1:10^2685000 chance of forming
DNA forming has slightly better odds of 1:10^90000
thats a lot of zeros
But considering they estimate 2^80 atoms in the universe, it’s very overwhelming odds
1,208,925,820,000,000,000,000,000 atoms
Roughly
Whoops 10^80
Do I have any way to move water from a source that's likely at a ground level, to a tank that might be at the same ground level or a little higher, without using a pump, and preventing backflows from tank to the source?
Maybe with a check valve, but I don't think that it will work just fine
The "or a little higher" part is the problem. To raise water against gravity you need some sort of an energy or power source. So it just depends on what constraints you're operating under. Like, you said no pump, but could you use a windmill? 😉
anyone know how long adafruit will take to ship something to the tri state area?
just a rough estimate is all i need
the shipping window for a day closes at 11am Eastern. The shipping times are what the carrier would predict from New York, NY to your location
you can pay more for faster shipping
i live one day away by UPS ground,. If I order after 11am, it goes out the next day, and arrives the day after that. Very occasionally there are 1-day hiccups.
alright thanks! also minimum order chagnge in effect end or start of march?
that's for purchase orders, not for prepaid orders
there is no minimum for prepaid orders
If it's at the same height?
I guess that there aren't like diodes for water systems or aren't there?
backflow preventer: https://plumbingtoday.biz/blog/what-is-a-backflow-preventer-and-how-does-it-work
A backflow preventer allows water to flow into your home but stops it from flowing backwards and contaminating the public water supply.
if the destination is at a lower height, a siphon (maybe with a check valve) might work
is your source pressurized (like a faucet)? or is it another tank or something?
That's called a ram pump. Montgolfier Brothers (the hot air balloon) invented it.
The source is pressured
There's some space between the source and the ground, so it could be used to add stuff to collect the source
Forget sbout my previous pick it was no sense 😅
There's not much space between the source and the ground
I need a way to transfer that water out of that space and storing it somewhere
If I'm reading my recent order # correct, it's 3024036, which means that since they celebrated 3 million (seems like just days ago), we've ordered over 24,000 since. Man great! Don't know how they keep up! I love LadyAda and family (hopelessly addicted).
Yes, they cut fairly neatly and easily between pins
ok
from the BNO085, how would I calculate "G" Force amount
You'd divide the acceleration (in m/s^2) by 9.8 to get gees.
I'm getting good at having ChatGPT help me write code. I'm making a robot that follows a laser, so far I'm just on the laser tracking part. It takes some back and forth, ask for something basic then keep asking for more things. I have probably written 12 out of 120 lines and it works great. You can't ask ChatGPT for much at a time but if you keep building it up then it can be a powerful assistant.

@night crescent I think I'm going nutz. When Lady Ada said the new AGS02MA gas sensor as "it's not super calibrated..." I heard Mary POPPINS singing - "not so super cal-e-brated sensor is ok though" (Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious) 😵💫
Playing around with sticker designs
The font for the “development technologies” part is called Mokoto glitch 2
Kind of cool
Reminds me of some of the Chank fonts
i like it, nice font choices
Any gamers here?
@late fulcrum plays Hello Kitty Island Adventure xD
Retro gamers
Can an US Snes play Pal games with the cartridge slot tabs removed?
no idea
Son of a....
Lol hello kitty adventure
My sister would probably play hello kitty games
@timid anvil you have made me dig out my GBA. 🙂
Lol your welcome
Bomberman! Woot
Lol
And I also found the DS Lite.
I never got into the gba or ds lite
Anyone have recs on how to deal with this wall box? It's a metal box, poorly installed, feels like it might be attached to a stud on the left and nothing on the right,it just bends away when pushed. I'm guessing it would be easier to just replace with an old work PVC box rather than try to fix, so that's what I'm attempting to do. But I'm not sure how to get it out. Assuming it's attached to a stud on the left, like I dunno, how do I get at the nail?
Those are the only two Nintendo hand helds I like.
th ams
*thanks
I did modify an EU Playstation with a US power supply so I can play PAL games (via a PAL-NTSC converter)
So you can play both?
Probably I'd try chipping away at the plaster to get at the joint between the box and stud and then attack it with a wonderbar or equivalent prying device.
that's what i've been doing and boy... i think the metal box's front plate was installed backwards, so that the flanges faced the wrong way. At this point there is only one corner still attached and it appears to be screwed in from the top (??)
unfortunately this is drywall that definitely contains asbestos
Aha, here's the fastener... can't tell if it's a screw or a nail
kinda looks like a philips head on there
I'm gonna need a right angle screw driver to get in there
I'd probably just cut it off with a cold chisel or vibratory saw, TBH
does anyone know if microsoft office certifications are going to help my resume noticeably or am I just paying for something that's going to be glossed over by recruiters
excel's pretty useful to have but maybe I should just be getting cad certs?
Are you applying for secretarial positions? I don't think they'd matter for engineering jobs...
just figured microsoft product experience is in every posting and a cert might create some interest
maybe I'll spend more time on some fun projects
Definitely focus on projects, document them. Share details and progress on LinkedIn, GitHub, your resume, etc..
I actually got found for the startup I worked for because of the projects I worked on and shared on LinkedIn
I would actually have something to post on linknedin too
And also I am able to lean into projects during interviews to help bridge knowledge gaps that my job doesn’t exactly provide
I have more followers on Linkedon than I do any other social media platform lol
Over 2000
I guess I should start with a job I want and pick a project around that.
I’d focus on projects that help you demonstrate skills more broadly
But also that are interesting
If they want coding experience, build something in the language you’re expected to use
this sounds like it carries more weight than "hey I took this test and passed" lol
Like implementing a light controller with FreeRTOS on a Arm based WiFi or Bluetooth microcontroller
This being if you’re looking at embedded work
Projects also help demonstrate the ability to be adaptive and to be able to learn new skills
This is true. A completed project is worth much more than tests. The employer wants to know whether you can actually solve their problems and build things, not guess a multiple-choice answer.
Exactly
Plus projects give you the opportunity to share difficulties and how you overcame them which highlights the problem solving skills EdKeyes mentioned
they could also sub for the certs as experience
well there goes 200 dollars in test fees but maybe they'll be useful for something later
Certificates are kind of useless if you can’t apply it
Which is why demonstrable projects will always carry more weight for hiring managers
There will be a few places that care more about credentials than they do ability to apply knowledge but that’s changing pretty quickly
I’d only consider certificates as supplemental to actual experience doing things either on personal projects or in your current role.
And this is also feedback I’ve got from recruiters too
and thanks for sharing it
I've been kind of aimlessly trying to find something to make me a better candidate so I appreciate the help'
Definitely! Think about the role you want broadly and then google “x career project ideas”
That’ll give you something to start off on and make your own
So like “embedded project examples/ideas” if you want to do embedded engineering.
it worked. the cursed box is out.
it was screwed into a metal stud.
are there any switches on adafruit or digikey or like those sites that turn on with a key turn??
Yes, DigiKey has a category for them: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/keylock-switches/196
Can Confirm. ChatGPT is a dad. Thats a pretty good dad joke.
You definitely want to be familiar with the Office suite, but the certifications are a waste of time and money unless you're specifically applying for a secretarial position, as that tends to be their bread and butter. A lot of organizations are even moving away from Office anyway, using things like Google Docs [some places are totally no Microsoft and use Docs, Workspaces, don't even have Windows machines...]
Apple uses its own office suite too a lot of the time
Oh yeah, I forgot Apple has an office suite, lol
But most office suites are similar, be they Office, OpenOffice, LibreOffice, whatever Apple's is -- generally they do a word processor, spreadsheets, slideshow, and have similar options and layouts and whatnot
Thoughts on cad certs? AutoCAD was my next exam to take.
What kind of engineering degree did you have again?
Mechanical?
Yup!
I'd say in general, only get certs if you're looking at a job that wants those certs... otherwise you may never need the certs. For example, I'm in IT, and while the A+ is a standard, I've yet to work in a position that required it
[also some certs, like the A+, lag pretty well behind industry standards, so they're not really helpful anyway]
I almost got my A+ in like 2002, but they still covered Windows 98 as the newest if I recall... when 2000 and NT were pretty common
A+ is actually a lot better now
O ya? Well, still, it's time and money to get it [maybe just time and effort if your company will pay for it], but it's not generally necessary
Especially since now A+ needs to be renewed, if you get that and don't use it, you really did waste the money
[assuming you actually know the contents of the A+ anyway, when I was thinking about getting mine, I knew some stuff better than the training materials, lol]
Lol
A+ and Network+ are very desirable these days for IT admin roles
But I digress
Oh yeah, there's definitely a want for them. But it depends on the job. I'm just the IT admin for a single school of a few hundred people, and it's a hodgepodge mess; A+ certs don't help you when your servers are 10-20 years old and held together with duct tape and a prayer
Don’t forget the sketchy software patches they paid that one smart kid to write 7 years ago
Mhmm
And that floppy that's in that one server that has nothing on it, but the server won't start without it in the drive. And only THAT floppy.
Lol
Computers are weird
This sounds like my cats growing up
floppy cat, lol
They only permit one way of doing things
Fun fact: ChatGPT-3 can forget things
And I got it stuck in a rut, lol. Had it make a "Universal Paperclips" Python game, and have hit an error that it always spits out the same "corrected" code for. Even when I tell it that there aren't any changes or it's the same thing as what it just said, lol
Ah, wait, fed it back the code it keeps spitting out and said "doesn't work" on the end, and it made a change, lol
it gave the same joke to me the openai api version gave me a mean joke with the 70oC temperature setting
Kyo? Want to see something👀
here is the joke the mean api version of chatgpt did about you:: What did OldMaNBlunTZ#7527 say when he stubbed his toe?
A: Oh, bluntz!
Welp, you know your package is officially lost when the UPS tracking page suggests filing a claim :/
that remind me when i had an imaging test in hospital and when i went back they handled me a mask and asked the questions about covid etc and o was like no but im radioactive
they didn't know what to say : 🤣
Lol
not that it makes sense because humans are kinda always radioactive especially those who eat lot of fruits & vegetables
but I thought that was funny at the time
also when you take an xray and they says it's not dangerous but they have a 60 pounds lead apron while being near you and they are in a nuclear vault when they take the xray
or the leaded vest they put over the parts of your body they don't want exposed
"yeah, they don't need that arm anyway. it's broken"
Years ago I heard the TSA was trying to disallow employees wearing dosimeters
actually back they asked me if i was planning to travel because the tsa dont like the surprise of someone being radioactive
Query:
Where in Europe can someone purchase Adafruit Lipo batteries?
Pimoroni has similar ones, but I was wondering if the actual adafruit ones are available there.
You can check for distributors here https://www.adafruit.com/distributors
Did that - dug thru a handful of the bigger name websites and no lipos to be found. (clarification -- none of the adafruit lipos)
sure
Hmm. Maybe try the DigiKey site for your part of the world and look for Battery Products -> Batteries Rechargeable (Secondary) then filter manufacturer by AdaFruit. However, it may be that due to the difficulties of shipping lithium cells, that AdaFruit ones are just difficult to obtain there.
Step 1: get a bottle of diet Coke, pour out about 1/4
Step 2: add a sleeve of Mentos
Step 3: close cap quickly
Step 4: RUN
I pinked myself!
Exactly
(I'm in the US trying to find a source for an EU user of my device which specs the adafruit battery - digikey/mouser dont seem to have them available to EU. Adafruit has the JST wired reversed than ones from amazon/china so its a fairly specific problem)
well thats what me, brother and friends use to do after school everyday back then 😭
heh
You can fix that!
Manic Panic on Amazon, lol
lol
hello, i have some cheap electric air duster that died (was a gift exchange amazon/wish thing)
looks like it died somehow.. after a couple weeks of use (not surprised lol)
its using a usb c plug to charge, the led doesnt light up. im wondering whats wrong with it, so i took it apart.
i tested the battery pack with a multimeter, i get 11.85v .. (3 batteries in the pack, im guessing 18650) so looks good?
the dimension of the microcontroller? board? is 30mm by 34mm.
the switch is normally opened.. but the third leg for NC config is still present.. i did feel some warmth when the battery was full, and im wondering if this was causing some overheating/drainage..
the third leg is not soldered in the board like the 2 other legs
sorry this is a big wall of text. i can provide pictures if needed?
is there a microcontroller i can use to replace it? or an easy way to fix this?
or can someone redirect me to the appropriate channel?
picture of the area of the pcb could help
yes pictures, as many as you can of both sides of the pcb as close as you can, clear images please.
yup
Normally closed, normally open, common
it's a configurable switch, with options.
depending on how it's used
that's not the issue and i don't see anything obvious jumping out. maybe some kind of mosfet overheating. look for signs of tiny burn spots on the mosfet.
You can use a multimeter with continuty to test some traces
what does the little black wire go to the battery pack?
mosfet is the dp3080, c1l0208 square one in the back right?
because on the back one of the silkscreens say NTC which is a thermistor
yeah the thermal probe was touching the battery pack, makes sense
yes the dp in the back
LDO near R16 should be looked at closely, power regulator
actually looks like there's two of them the other near R14 too
the 3rd leg of that switch is probably not connected to anything, can't be 100% sure without a schematic because that traces is running pretty close to it as well.
the switch leg should work, the question is if the PCB actually uses it in any way.
also ii don't see an LED
hmm im no pro, but even with my macro lens on the phone, there isnt anything obvious that looks bad.. like lets say a capacitor that blew
the LED is to the right of r12 i think, just below the connector. thats where the hole in the plastic casing is for the charging LED
i get a beep between C and NC
when the switch is still open?
yeah
i'll assume the LED is to let you know of charging status so that should still be working even if the on/off switch isn't.
can it only be charged while off would be a good question
hmm, let me try 3 or 4 usb cables
do you get a beep between c and nc while the switch is pressed?
The NC leg isn't even soldered into the board, so it's unlikely it's part of the circuit at all. Not sure if you noticed that.
do you get a beep between c and no while the switch is pressed too
yes i'm aware but if the switch is malfunctioning it doesn't matter if it's hooked up or not because i don't see any separation from the NC via meaning it could be shorted to gnd
C and NO, pressed switch, yes
now c and nc while pressed
also, tried 5 different usb cables, i get no LED to light up. but idk if i need the battery to be plugged in
checking for a switch failure
C and NC, while pressed no
led is sitting next to the battery JST so stands to reason it's for battery power? i don't know. i've never seen that board before so no clue how it's supposed to work and without a schematic it's all guessing from this end.
ok that's a good thing switch looks ok
the more info you can provide about what happens when it operates normally is most beneficial for helping you to troubleshoot.
i tried the usb cables, with battery plugged, nothing
there doesn't appear to be anything obviously physically wrong visually
so pressing the switch for 3 seconds, turns on the blower, then you can press the button, to have more power, 3 power settings total. then hold for 3 more seconds to turn off
possible i'm missing something, having more sets of eyes to look it over is helpful. maybe others here will take a look and spot something.
the logic has to be coming from the b2oc chip on the back
the FMD chip right? fremont micro devices
is there a way to connect to it and check the code?
im guessing usb would be too easy for these things.. probably some weird connection that has to do with 3 or 4 pins on the chip itself
i see no information on the b2qchfh or the other small one below it l2f2301
depends on the IC's usually it's hardcoded and you'd need a debugger or logic analyzer.
this is as much as I can help, hopefully someone else comes along and takes a stab at it, i'm out of ideas.
are you aware of any microcontroller that could do the same kind of job as this one? id like to Frankenstein that thing. i like tinkering and this is a simple enough project lol
found some ali express reviews with pictures of the board.. its in russian tho
so I had an MRI done and I really have to wonder what kind of electronics went into that thing because it seems like black magic almost
MRI's seem like magic anyway. "Oh hey we can take pics of your brain if we just align these protons for a nano second"
The basics is: they send strong magnetic fields through your body and measure the changes in the field and use that to construct an image
That’s the very un-nuanced version of what happens
yea but I mean, Im trying to think of the circuitry and electrical design to power such magnets
It seems very very complex
It is
and I doubt I can find even an inkling of whats involved out of curiosity lol
It’s probably one of the most complex medical machines used today
Yes. Probably slightly less complex than LHC
but very very cool tech
I asked the tech and she said "It uses very advanced physics" lmaoo
Shes not wrong
John’s Hopkins University says that it realigns the atoms in your body and reads the radio waves emitted
Kind of wild
it knocks on all the protons in your body (with superconducting magnets and RF) and listens to the sound
the book about medical instruments design and applications has a chapter on medical imaging including MRI, basically based on this and North-North aligned magnets returning energy to the system whatever that mean
thats even crazier lol
The sounds you hear are nuts too
Those machines are usually docless and crazy expensive to repair
So you find often health facilities desperately looking for repairs men
🤔 this feels like its from Full Metal Alchemist where they list off the percentages of elements in a body ( I know its not)
After that it measures the property of hydrogen for the base images
But I assume to make magnets go N-N which they dont do naturally it takes a lot of energy
Yea, I tried looking around the room for any big cords and didnt see any. Id imagine the thing just takes crazy amounts of energy
apparently it takes a lot of magnetic measurements, measuring time between signals from an initial excited state of matter etc it filter it out to lessen the noise value that's why MRI takes a couple of minutes according to the book
my understanding is that the superconducting magnet takes a large amount of energy to charge up, but it happily stays that way as long as you keep it (very) cold
The book is from 2010, but still the basic concept should still be the same
To image a cross-image of a tissue they varies the exciting frequency of a gradient field
That math is way about my level, just trying to summarize it
it mention superconducting coils and about 2T of magnetic fields
There is two types of MRI apparently, one that uses a magnetic field under 1T but doesn't need superconducting coils but has less resolution but is lower power and still fine for a lot of imaging needs
Hopefully that help a bit @wanton thistle 🙂 I don't understand most of it
It's just 5 pages so doesn't have instructions on how to make one with arduino 🤣
yea, I heard the Cryopump, so it must be the bigger one
at one point the whole thing was shaking and I felt like I was on a rocket ship lol
"It would be cool if this thing could open a black hole, kind of like Half Life"
Honestly Id just try to find a patent for one, probably would be easier to understand
Because the claims in a patent have to be understood by the patent examiner to have legal weight.
😅 thats a 10PM rabbit hole to go down. I already looked up what the various sounds were and what they were imaging
My hospital almost exclusively uses siemens stuff
I didnt catch which ones they use. Ive used Siemens PLCs though, and they are "OK"
this would be one for instance when you are rested: https://patents.google.com/patent/US10789740B2/en
Methods are provided for magnetic resonance (MR) image reconstruction. In one exemplary method, a low-resolution prescan MR data record is recorded, the prescan MR data record is adjusted to a provided form of a higher resolution scan MR data record which is likewise to be recorded, a compressed prescan MR data record is generated by geome...
Lol… just had a pair of door knockers stop by my house
(I live in Utah so this means I had LDS missionaries at my door)
I very quickly say “we’re not interested, thank you bye!”
Did you wish you had star trek style forcefields ?
Best way to avoid door knockers would be to make the door unreachable so you can't hear it and have the shield that prevent this from conducting sounds
Maybe this would help
Oh Idk why that has someones name
That MRI data processor though...wonder if its a mini super computer
I just find that looking at patents and linked patents generally explain things better than dry academic books in a language that non-academic can understand 🙂
So many interesting things going on lol
Also it's real-world devices that peoples buy not "theorical" machines in a course
lol also they labeled the patient as "Victim"
nah I added that cuz I like adding jokes 😄
lmao
that's just a 10 sec paint thing
"This side up"
Watching videos of people throw stuff in MRI machines was fun.
I wonder what happens if you throw a copper bar inside of one
because a magnet in a copper bar slows down.
actually you know the other fun thing about patents ?
You wonder what the mri data processor is
Ive found patients with the actual circuits for home appliances. That stuff is awesome
but there is 42 written next to it, which mean they also describe it sufficiently to protect it as part of the patent
no 42 refers to paragraphs in the patent
ie: 0042. The MRI system starts Parallel imaging subroutine A (step S300). The object to be scanned is placed in the MRI system (step S302). This step includes, in addition to placing the object in the MRI gantry in a manner suitable for scan
ning, configuring the MRI system for executing the scanning sequences appropriate for acquiring the desired type of diagnostic images. Configurations may include selection of prescan and main scan sequences, reduction factor associated
with parallel imaging, gradient configurations, and the like.
but in this case they dont describe the MRI data processor so they probably have another patent for it that describe it and the algorithms
Lol, This was a reference to the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
this seems like a long winded way of saying "its a digital processor that process's the raw data into human readable form"
I prefer victim to object personally
I mean they are being bombarded by a magnetic field
well they have to be verbose and specific when they describe what they protect. Writing these is the sole career of some peoples. The one registering it want to be as general as possible while the patent office want it to be as specific as possible
After that they can see eh that other MRI system does the same thing as us so they violated our patent so they own us money
Basically you claim something and you use the numbered paragraphs section as a dictionnary/specification to explain what the claim mean as specific as possible
In this case they dont claim this MRI figure as an invention so they don't describe it in details, they just use it as a example of a typical MRI
I wonder if I can find schematics for an air fryer
(Ive already taken one apart-so its a curiosity thing)
probably but for larger devices that is usually not in a patent but in trade secrets
oh btw, I wouldnt use the schematic straight if the patent is still active
because even if it's for non-profit/hobbyist the fine is pretty steep
Does the chrome browser ble security key with phone actually works reliability
I tryed and it works with edge too
There is this patent I really want to infringe on
Since it won't expire for another decade
Great
Time to prank my friends by writing this side up on every side of the box
You can run an MRI machine with an XBox. If it’s one of the old ones, lol. I have field manuals for some old GE models
I think they were largely analogue
Running medical equipment with MICROS~1 is just asking for another Therac-25 incident ☢️
checks UPS track
UPS: “we scanned it in Colorado lol”
Me: “but it was in SLC on Monday?!?!?”
It’s like someone threw my package on a truck to Colorado and they just got to the truck..
checks international tracking Oct-11-2022: Scanned by carrier in Shenzen, China Oct-12-2022: Vancouver, BC, Canada China Post Air Solutions Terminal Oct-12-2022 CBSA customs inspection ???? Feb-24-2023 ???? grrrrrr
I really don't know what take them so long. This is just an example but happened several time to me
Like by the time you get them the electronics went from brand new to used to refurbished by the CBSA (Canadian Customs)
maybe they'll take some of it for themselves
Still no Pi today. Starting to wonder if it's ever going to arrive.
I just got the most powerful video card, the 9999 Pyidia
Helps render the best dreams
It's such a soft plushie
11/10 for style and performance
Also got a GPU today but it doesn't have RGB : (
Smol
And sad on the RGB front
I won't be using this cooler though, I'm preparing a mod to fit this into my ITX machine.
Also do some current sense resistor mod on this card
Fire+
I like to imagine one day we will have a colony on an ice moon or asteroid
and computers will have the reverse problem
like you will try to make it hot enough to run
Most processors don't have cold bugs anymore
I think you can move to Canada
Anything over 20K is fine
Pretty sure they have cold bugs at 50 kelvins
Not most modern Intel and AMD desktop chips. At least not as far as I know -- but it's kinda hard to get things that cold
And keep them cold
Doesn't electrons slow down as temperature get very cold right ? It's not a cpu thing it's a physics thing no?
And europa can be that cold depending on where you are same with the shadow side of asteroids
So moving to Canada might be better option: you get cold enough and you also got free health care as a bonus.
I mean, everything slows down when you get cold enough, lol. But once the processor starts up it can get pretty hot pretty fast, so unless you’re in a totally uninsulated environment…
sometimes that result in healthcare facility deciding your issue deserves to wait 6 hours and you just die while waiting
ie: free healthcare has issues too like the lack of choice
As much as people rag on the US healthcare system, a lot of that money goes into equipment. US has far more and far newer MRI machines than Canada, for example, so it’s a lot faster to get into a machine for a scan here
Might cost two legs and a kidney, but it’s fast and high resolution
It's the same thing with student loans in canada (I mean guaranted here)
they will restrict how much you can borrow
in the US it's far less restricted because it will be your problem eventually anyway
Also if you are the best student in Canada you only get 10000$ from the governor of canada
I see, but comparing costing legs and arms I might pick 6 hours wait....
I’ve got like $32k in student loans and I dunno if I’ll ever shake that
whereas in the US you might get a full scholarship for all of university at a big university like harvard or the MIT and 500000$ in research funds/living expenses
I can name the person this happened to in Canada if you insist 🤣
Oops the brain bleed got you after 2
If I got a bill of 100K then I might just be
this seems ok until you feel like you have 6 hours left to live unless you see a doctor because they didn't triage you correctly and you don't even have the option to pay a doctor 1000$ to see you right now
this happened to me before, if they had triaged me wrong I would have died
The thing with US healthcare partly comes down to insurance and how sick you are. If you don’t have a lot of problems, and have good insurance, the actual healthcare can be inexpensive
Even emergency stuff. I had to go to the hospital after a car accident, and paid nothing for the ambulance and care
Well, nothing on top of my regular insurance
Yeah I agree, I'm half joking about the healthcare
also in Canada hospitals find a lot of way to make it not free
Healthcare is complicated. If you’re uninsured in the US… oops that broken leg cost $80k
like they charge 50$ to 100$ a day for a room when you are hospitalized
internet and cable costs 25$ a day
etc
I have free healthcare in Taiwan also, which isn't that bad as it sounds like in Canada
There are trade offs
Mhmm
thankfully not all province are the same and I once flew to another province because I had a medical problem and it had waited for too long
Idk, I’d take Canada health care over paying $400 a month in order to have the option to have my healthcare costs covered after I spend an additional $4k for myself, and $4k at a 30% co-pay for my family until I hit my $8000 out of pocket maximum at an in network provider
I pay 200$ a month for healthcare insurance too, because anything that isn't direct healtcare isn't covered
US has some of the best medical technology, but countries like Canada are accessible to everyone. Homeless folks can get help far more easily when they aren’t turned away for being uninsured, or have to worry about having a massive bill they could never pay
Like if I break my wrist xray seeing the doctor etc is covered
but not the work after I see the doctor which cost 100$ per hour
The X-ray is like $1000
Like the professional when you using something to stretch your wrist etc so it heal over time nbetter and so you can use it again one day
not sure what is the US word but some kind of physio?
that's not covered, only my 200$ a month insurance cover such things and even then it stops at like 1000$ at 70% refund with 200$ I pay myself a year. So if it's a major injury it's going to cost me a lot
dental care is typically not covered in canada either and can run about 4000$
routine work is about 200$ an hour, most health insurance plan don't even cover it even if you pay
so yeah, I'm just saying when you say Canada healthcare is free there is a lot of ifs and but
Like I just checked similar services in new york and they are about the same prices
Oof… I have like a $10 copay for dental, and some procedures cost me like $100 (like a full root canal and capping)
But I have basic dental
My dental has a $50 deductible and covers 50% up to $2000
Im just trying to says that healthcare cost is not just the cost of seeing a doctor in an emergency room which is clearly much cheaper in Canada even taking into account the 100$ a day rent when you are hospitalized. Healthcare is also when you break your wrist playing a sport of your leg and you have to see a physio, if you break your teeth etc....
So I still end up paying $2000+ for dental work but that doesn’t cover orthotics
typically ambulance transport can cost up to 500$ as well, except for specific cases depending on the province
and typically they are not covered by private health insurance to prevent abuse
sooooo I have a 4500 deductible and I went to the ER. Definitely had AFIB and insurance didnt cover it lol
Out of network?
For me it's a bit mind-boggling though
nope. Local hospital. they take BCBS
Like states did covid measures, but if you show up in ER with heart problems and you can't afford it they just let you die ?
That is so weird for me
theres rules, they have to treat you
weither you can afford it, is a different matter
But they can be more judicious on the treatment if you’re uninsured
yeah but is it worth it when you end up homeless when they seize all your stuff for the 50000$ medical bill ?
if you played Cyberpunk 2077, or watched the Anime they hit it on the mark
Like making sure to charge you for the most expensive operation when you’re uninsured
Oh also, if you aren't a canadian citizen in Canada you pay a cost like the US btw 😄
Im not sure if they can seize my stuff, but Ive gotten collection letters. Most thats happened is my credit score took a hit of like 25 points
But like...when your credit score is in the 700s and dont need any loans, then...you know, it didnt matter
Like my girlfriend from france back then had to pay 1000 euros once just to see a doctor and get 1 xray while it's free for me (but her health insurance in France later repaid almost all of it)
If it's not an emergency they will actually refuse to see you without examining your health insurance from country with health treaties
Aesthetics are the hardest part of any project…
Opinions on sets of 4 vs. pattern of 4? I know sets of 4 is standard
Personally I like colors grouped together
I am leaning towards that, the pattern looked better in my head, lol
Also debating color order...
Heh, my natural instinct would be black-red-yellow-blue to match the visual spectrum (with black playing the role of infrared).
someone ever had surgery here with general anasthesia ?
Now… do I want to swap the LEDs? Lol. I’ve got blue, green, yellow, and white
I have. Waking up was kinda like sleep paralysis
