hey i know this might be easy but i have struggled with this for a while and its building a generator. I understand (at least a little ) of Faraday's law. I have a 2,000 gauss magnet from amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F79WNF7?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) and I have some insulated copper wire which does conduct electricity (I tested it with a voltage meter) and tied it originally around a cut up cereal box which I tuner into a tube and it has around 100 turns when it did not produce electricity I took off the coil but still nothing. The only thing I can think is maybe the wire is not copper as I found it in Hobby Lobby craft section but it still conduct electricity even while it is in a coil. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!!

ok that would also make sense

The type of wire does not matter, but if it's uninsulated copper wire, you will have less of a coil and more of a short

#

You need magnet wire

#

Nvm. You said it was insulated

#

How are you testing if it produces any electricity?

I picked up magnet wrapping wire over the summer last year. Super small and perfect for bodging connections.

It's basically impossible to hand solder qfns with an iron, but it is easy-ish if you have a hot air station or a hotplate.

But you can definitely touch up qfn pads if you have a chisel tip for your iron

I do this a lot if I’m doing qfn without a stencil

Adafruit posted this and said to make guesses about what it could be

I want to think it’s a Metro M7, but I also think that might be an artifact from reusing the board design

It’s like a 100 TQFP from some of the pictures I’ve seen

Idk, maybe there’s also a TQFP80 of it

But it’s probably an iMX M7 board

#

Yeah, I'd tend to agree. The P4 probably won't be available for some time, and if you were going to make a board for it, you'd want to do one with camera/display interfaces, etc.

# frigid tiger Is this gpu toast

Depends on how far that crack goes… if it doesn’t reach the teeny tiny capacitors on the left side of the circle, it’s probably totally fine — that notch is, as moticul said, purely mechanical, so as long as no traces cracked with it, there’s no problem (aside from the fact the GPU might slip a little with the bent notch, causing connection issues)

thanks really helped. i got 2 extra for a future project

whole jacinth
# frigid tiger Is this gpu toast

check whether the crack has come near any traces. GPUs might have traces in inner layers that won't show up on optical images, though. also, if you're having that shipped to you and don't have it in hand, the crack could propagate during shipping. you could theoretically stop-drill the crack to limit its further propagation. (this is a common practice in aircraft maintenance)

Trying to understand how to interact with the SRAM chip on my IL91874 display to write my own driver (already got it working without using it and just storing framebuffer on RP2040's RAM)

After reading the code and part of the chip's datasheet, I think data is stored there and gets read byte by byte from the MCU to re-send it to the display, is that correct? Im not really understanding what this function is doing https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_EPD/blob/master/src/Adafruit_EPD.cpp#L313-L348

Thus, i could store my whole framebuffer data in the chip in any format i want, just being careful with the addressing of the data (i'd format it in the same way as done with MCU's RAM, right?

But a $1000 delta sounds cheap at the price. A friend of mine who's nearly deaf got some extremely high end hearing aids, and while he was writing out the check (for several thousand dollars) to pay for them, he could hear the scratching of the pen on the paper and realized it was totally worth it.

Is this the right channel to ask about which type of wires to use? I figured HW is more for circuit board design. If I need to move this, no problem. My issue is, I have been prototyping some little designs without a breadboard because I am 3d printing enclosures and stuff. I break a lot of my soldered leads off from my LED's copper solder spot or the pin one my microcontroller. I decided to try a thinner more flexible wire, like in the link below. These snap off pretty easily too. Is this just due to using cheap wire or is there a specific type/brand that works best for small little projects? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G2HFCS1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

late fulcrum
delicate stream
#

Unfortunately if there's a stress/bend on a wire, especially if it goes back and forth, eventually any wire will break. Some are more resistant, like braided cable, and certain alloys, but any sharp bend will be bad news for any wire

sand frigate
sand frigate
late fulcrum
#

Yes, the aluminum wires are less conductive and more brittle. I think they're terrible and try to avoid them.

delicate stream
#

Aluminum is cheaper tho, so some vendors will sell aluminum at copper prices to make more money

late fulcrum
#

Some will even use copper coated aluminum, so it looks like copper wire but isn't

delicate stream
delicate stream
#

Potentially dangerous sneaks

sand frigate
#

Ahhh, I see! So is tinned copper a cheaper type of stranded wire?

delicate stream
#

"tinned" means it has a pre-applied layer of solder

#

And for stranded wire, that keeps the ends together

sand frigate
#

ohhh, the ones I am using are loose and not soldered together

delicate stream
#

Applying solder to the end of a stranded cable can help strengthen it near the end. Especially if you're clipping it into something, rather than it spreading out, the solder keeps it in place and takes some strain off the conductor itself

#

Strain relief is probably one of the best things to consider adding -- like, if you have cables being pulled to nearly 90 degree angles, that's gonna break something. If you add a rubber strain relief, that reduces the bend angles and makes more of the cable bend more gently, which reduces strain and likelihood of breakage

#

Heat shrink tube or even electrical or gaff tape can help with that

thick wind
#

Truth be told, even hot glue works wonders in relieving strain. No conductive and easy to use, though it is a bit messier than the alternatives.

delicate stream
#

Yeah. Your preferred material depends on what you’re doing — hot glue is great for things you probably never need to mess with again

thick wind
#

Generally any stranded wire will be pretty flexible, but any bending at the solder joint where they’re all essentially welded together will put stress on the wires that can cause them to break pretty easily. Reinforcing the solder joints with a ball of hot glue has done wonders for me, at least.

delicate stream
#

Sharp bends kill wires

thick wind
#

Sharp bends at soldered ends kill wires much faster haha

delicate stream
#

Yeah, lol

thick wind
#

Most wires aren’t going to break at the first sharp bend you make; outside of solder joints, it’s usually repeated flexing or pinching of wires that causes major problems

rain cradle

i have one i've been playing with the last weeks, as far as i've seen with tests, it seems that the refresh becomes slow because it has to do a lot of operations to make pixels red, when only using white and black data, it seems to work faster, but it still takes a bit of time to update

dense mirage
dense mirage
#

If you only write in white/black, and then refresh, does it still do a full 10s+ blanking cycle?

rain cradle
#

anyway, since those screens are recommended for somewhat-static purposes (the documentation about my particular model says updating more than once every 3 minutes could damage it).... i dont think having to wait a 5-10 seconds to update is a big deal

#

if you want something faster you could use a TFT(RGB)/OLED(2 color) display

dense mirage

So the problem is that users might find it annoying to wait a while

AFAIK the protocol that they are talk is USB

whole jacinth
#

some USB cables have crimped plugs

#

also PS/2 keyboard protocol is completely different from USB. you might have a keyboard that's new enough that it can use a passive adapter for PS/2, but that requires keyboard hardware/firmware that supports that

I'm pretty sure it's compatible with passive adapters, sure enough not to be disappointed if it would turn out otherwise

note that Ethernet-capable twisted pairs are a nominal differential impedance of 100 ohms, vs 90 ohms for USB. it might not make much difference for DIY stuff, but it might for commercial products

Agree, it's more suited for data

whole jacinth
#

i think you can't use UTP for USB anyway, because the USB common-mode impedance spec requires shielding to achieve

I partially wish that USB was as clear with specifications as these standard cables

whole jacinth
#

i think they're fairly clear in the specifications? there are also official conformance testing procedures that probably cover any remaining ambiguities

# lusty fossil Anyone with knowledge of the electrician arts? I'm looking to have someone add a...

This is probably a pretty easy task, but there are some specifics to consider. I'm not an electrician but I've added lots of outlets to my house, and haven't started any fires. Yet.

There is a good chance there is an outlet somewhere on the other side of the wall, in a bedroom, bathroom etc. In that case, the solution could be as simple as cutting a little hole in the drywall for the new outlet and running new wiring from the existing outlet to the new outlet.

If there isn't a convenient nearby outlet, there could be easily accessible power lines nearby in the ceiling for lighting, or in the basement.

Another question is how much juice do you need that outlet to supply? If you're just running a light or something, you'll likely be able to attach that load to the existing circuit. But if you are running something high wattage like a big heater, you might need to put that outlet on it's own circuit.

Adding a new circuit would much more complicated, but attaching a new outlet to an existing circuit is something you could probably do yourself after reading a few guides. Just remember to always shut off the breaker for the circuit you are working on, and make sure any work you do is safely contained inside proper rated electrical boxes for fire safely!

grizzled raptor
#

probably a silly question, but if i change the pin names in pin.py, will that change the labels used when writing code?

Example, taking this:

D4 = pin.D4
D5 = pin.D5
D6 = pin.D6

and making it:

D4 = Pin(4)
D5 = Pin(5)
D6 = Pin(6)

would let me use 4 as opposed to D4 when writing code using pin 4?

but also, any code wanting D4 is expecting a Pin object instance.

which is why something like

#

there's no way 4 could represent a Pin instance

#

even though led_pin = 4 is perfectly fine Python code

#

can you describe your motivation more? why are you wanting to do this?

tardy badger
#

Given that the gpio specific global methods can reference a lookup table to know that something like pinMode(4, INPUT) would be referencing pin 4 on a dev board

ancient rivet
#

yep. arduino works differently. pins are just indices into a table.

@ebon dew To stop blowing up cp-dev channel, but find out my curiosity, how do air plants grow naturally? Are they attached to other plants or something? Or is part of them still in the ground, even though they're not using that for nutrients or fluids?

ebon dew
#

The misting with a water bottle basically replicates the high humidity of a tropical environment. They get all the nutrients they need from moisture in the air.

#

The wind helps them propagate, so FL with hurricanes is a perfect environment for that. They flourish. I have maybe 50 on 3 large oak trees alone. They're not the exotic variety but they are talandsia's.

#

I didn't put them there, they just grow everywhere on their own. Most people don't even notice them.

#

until they bloom then they're easier to spot.

stray wind
#

So cool.

thick wind
#

It’s probably a good idea to look into design for manufacturing, as different production processes will incur costs for different types of operations. 100 pieces is far too few for many industrial processes, so my first thought would have been looking into 3d printing to start. Depending on whether your parts are being made with 3d printing, cnc machining, or injection molding, different optimizations can be made to a design to reduce cost.

@glossy girder You can get the flexible ones from Waveshare but they're only in HDMI or MicroHDMI. Nothing exists like that for SPI or I2C to my knowledge, certainly not in such a large size. Generally, currently anything over 4" requires a separate driver co-processor/buffer chip, you can't drive a display that large from a microcontroller by itself, just too many pixels. You can use a SBC (single board computer) like a Raspberry Pi with it though. That blog post is from 2020 and I don't think Adafruit ever started carrying them. You can inquire/request Adafruit stock any product by using the feedback form on Adafruit.com.

Now that the Pico has kind of provided a way to get to DVI/HDMI from a microcontroller it's possible we'll see some HDMI ports on microcontrollers in the future.

product description

we recommend current limiting with a resistor to let max 50mA through.
guide:
An inline current-limiting resistor is recommended. Try around 50 Ohms if the supply voltage is close to 3V, and 220Ω around 5V.

given a turn on voltage of say 2V, the current in the 3V case would be 20mA, and ~14mA in the 5V case
