PyLeap looks so cool - is it going to be made for android??
It's a leap of faith...
Lol, nice I no more hit enter, & they answered me. 🙂
Is PyLeap open source?
Work with CP Express?

Nice project.
CPX doesn't have bluetooth
not native, at least
maybe with add-on board?

What a cutie pie! Or is it... a QT Py? This diminutive dev board comes with one of our new favorite chip, the RP2040. It's been made famous in the new Raspberry Pi Pico and our ...
Ah, ok I wondered it might actually give almost a frame by frame cartoon effect
Maybe in the dark it would work.
Ya maybe if the frames were closer together, & it was enclosed with only being able to see it from the one end?
Really cool design & idea though!
Ya & with 3D printing, light will leak printed plastic really easily if it's not printed think enough. Hmm, perhaps mill metal dividers between the individual LED's?

This week @adafruit we’re checking out PyLeap and Glider apps for BLE circuit python devices! Prototyping a neopixel project with edge lit acrylic. Timelapse...
O' ya definitely lots & lots of potential for different design options ❤️
Edward Muybridge's running horse...
n00b question but where can you get acrylic like that?
Google Acrylic sales. There are places that sell it here in the UK. I guess the US is the same.
Amazon is usually a good place to look first
oh wow nice thanks!
O' & don't forget ur local hardware stores too. Like here in the states we have Lowe's, & Home Depot & others
https://www.thingiverse.com/make:986354 ninjaflex watch band
https://www.thingiverse.com/make:986237 16x16 matrix
Also, check that it is acrylic. Our hardware store here sells clear polystyrene. It is is marked as such, though.

I printed this on my trusty Ender 3 with a 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.18 mm layer height. I noticed some filament sag in the recessed numbers so I printed it again with tree supports. It help a little but was still not as clean as I would have liked. Makes me wonder if it is time to upgrade from my stock cooling fan.
Something's wrong. 🤔 I can't hear the lawnmower...
Good work crashing circuit python, long term buffer overflow or spike of electricity? Also shouldn't a watchdog timer catch that?
You also want me to make the holy handgrenade of antioke
Thank you for taking time for us.
Show and Tell. This week hosted by The Lars Zone...
thanks folks! cya tonight
thanks so much for hanging out folks!
Thanks, guys. 👍
Thanks both
thanks!
re: magnets - i always thought magnets were bad with electronics (eg, hard drives). is that not the case with chips and cards?
eg, the d20
I wondered that with latches etc. I think its changing magnetic fields that mess with memory of certain type, plus induced current in wires etc. Anyone got any real clue?
@upbeat coral Give https://code.circuitpython.org it should work from Chrome on Android
You need to make a side that show 2022 then cut some long flat trails up to the top that looks like Fireworks going off
Make the base that sticks into the light base then run up to 8 to 10 inch with fireworks just as wide
Thank you @rapid hornet . I'll look at it. I'm trying to multitask and figure out why I can't get a Picade Console to work out of the box with a Pi 3A and Retropi. Again Thank you.
🤠 Woo whooo. Picade running. Now some dinner before the shows.

Hi!
Good evening
Hey Y'll
Good evening all you loyal followers of Lars!
good evening folks
Good evening everyone.
Hi everyone!
Hello show-ers and tell-ers!
pleasant evening all!
come on by!
How to get here? Wherever you go, there you are. Oh wait, you mean streamyard 🙂
OOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMGGGGGGG!
Where’s this at?
Digikey HQ, at a secret undisclosed location at Thief River Falls, Minnesota
It’s the new Digi-Cave
I remember
that is so cool
nice. that's a clever use of the prox sensor.
Seeing Chris always makes me happy.
There should be! 🙂
I was going to show the saliva ejector (dentist suction tool) that we're using as a mount, but we were running long. Here's a link to the bracket: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5165664
This is a very simple bracket that will mount an Adafruit sensor onto a "saliva ejector" or "Dentist's suction tube thingy".
This is super handy because it allows you to position the sensor in any direction and the ejector will keep its shape without crushing your wire. This was a 5 minute design and a 10 minute print, but it worked... feel fre...

Sweet!
By the way this is Chris Young. My gamer name is showing up 🙂
We'd love it for you all to come work with us on AT projects https://www.facebook.com/groups/ATMakers or http://atmakers.org

Great demo, @trim mountain !
That looks awesome @hard hollow and @rocky reef
Those acrylic signs remind me of the Asgard controller circuits on Stargate SG-1 & Atlantis.
Why does it say 2023?
Great work @pearl shoal and @trim mountain really great to see the solutions you all put together.

Very Nixie-like display.
We're skipping 2022. We don't ask why, especially after 2020. 😉
Haha. Husband and I just did another COVID test, after sniffles. Negative!
Just be careful of the asgard crystal that has the Replicator control circuit on it. 🕷️
We need a No Op key cap!

I mentioned that my gamer name was showing up in discord. I play the MMO Eve Online. Here's a rather lengthy video explaining how use assistive technology to allow me to play the game. Save it for writer. It's an hour long. https://youtu.be/VUMNwcegboI
I enjoy playing the MMO game Eve Online and some of my friends were inquiring how I was able to do so considering my disability. This rather long video is a demonstration of how I do it. I put in chapter breaks because some people will be interested in the Eve portions. Other people will be interested in the Assistive Technology aspects of the v...
@waxen thistle Yes! It also reminds me of the data cards in Minority Report.
the issue I had using two usb devices like that, I havent been able to figure out how to do key combinations between two HID devices.
Will definitely watch that! 📺
@fair fulcrum yup, that's why I'll have them connected over serial too
I've done the two-layer keyboard thing, @rapid hornet, I found the trick is to poll the slave side and get back a list of "what's down"... then send HID based on changes to that. Othewise, you can drop key-ups (which is bad)
yea, that is a great idea using one as a primary, i like it!
UART is buffered in CP so I think I can have it just transmit events
definitely not my idea 🙂
"s/master/primary'
Super neat little synth @cinder wind!
This is insanely cool. A UNO?!?!?
@rapid hornet here's what we're doing that's similar... https://github.com/gdsports/IntelliKeys_uhls It has an arduino reading the custom USB from the Intellikeys and keeping a scoreboard of "what's down" and the CP code periodically polls to see what cells are pressed. That let's the CP code do the mapping between the hardware cells and the keyboard...
Just one! Uno UNO. 🙂
thanks!
Super cool christmas tree PCBs
so pretty!
This is the actual code we're using - it relies on that driver https://github.com/ATMakersOrg/IKeysAdapter/tree/master/software
Are those on one I2C address?
QT Py is an awesome I2C tool
The MozziScout hack I showed https://github.com/todbot/MozziScout
always so creatively musical Liz
Gorgeous, Liz
I like the CircuitPlayground holder looks like a neopixel
It seems like a busy show and tell but I'm building 20 tiny Memex (an idea from the 40s) and this is prototype 2. It has a SBC inside and two displays.
thanks folks!
Mr. Certainly, how do you keep your life from flying apart? Rigid self-discipline? Sheer determination? Arcane magics?
Nope. Hot glue.
Yesssss. And for me, double-sided tape, and VHB tape.
tape, putty, assorted glues
More of a small demo / test code than a full project this week for me. I was working on some changes to displayio TileGrid recently and built this "slider puzzle" app that jumbles any image you want into one of these puzzles.
Duct tape, twine, and chicken wire may also be involved.
Oh and zip ties.
Great projects everyone. Thanks for sharing.
And my 2 secret weapons for success -- high grit sandpaper (800-1200 grit) and hockey stick grip tape.
I made it randomly assign the tiles, but I'm starting to suspect some combinations are not solvable so I made a secondary "cheater" button that swaps any two tiles.
Thanks @haughty quiver and guests
Thanks for sharing all
Thanks for sharing, y'all.
EXCELLENT JOB guest hosting S&T tonight @haughty quiver !
Thanks, @haughty quiver !
I missed the early shares but will catch them in reruns

There’s part shortages?! 😉
can't wait
Find maker jobs in 3D and CAD, Art, Design, Education, Embedded Development, Engineering, Fabrication, Marketing and Communications, and Web Development
FoamyGuy's coding streams are great
First it's a chip shortage, so I finally stock up on kettle chips and corn chips -- and now I find out there's a part shortage. Make up your mind, capricious supply chain!
I think there is even an internets shortage. There are less internets to go around
Poor AWS.
Special thanks to @paper peak from Adafruit for all the help on the Ella project
I send a lot of money a month for over a decade now to AWS so not worried

@waxen thistle that is rad

Not PyLeap, previous topic
PyLeap is wicked cool as we say in Boston
PyLeap is so cool for people getting started! I've done a few in-person demos for friends and its always a hit.
is that newsletter graphic new? nice!
Sadly, we can't as easily automate writing a resignation letter due to obnoxious micromanagement policies, which focus more upon the asinine instead of common-sense productivity goals.

That really depends on the workplace culture. Because there are places that will absolutely hold even the tiniest mistake against you.
So whenever possible, build a healthy culture.

I manage hundreds of technology people. I urge them to make mistakes
@ionic garnet we always resolve things without needing to go legal-route usually, we talk to others 🙂
prolly helps have a show too 🙂

I know you do. Just saying that sometimes other people have their own agenda

huh, could be cool for some battery powered ESP32 remote sensor projects with pin alarms.
searching google for pir sensor. first result, adafruit learn guide, nice.
so this NPI is like a more integrated version of this basically, yeah? https://www.adafruit.com/product/4871
PIR sensors are used to detect motion from pets/humanoids from about 5 meters away (possibly works on zombies, not guaranteed). This sensor is much smaller than most PIR modules, which makes ...

we will!

Great @open girder - thanks
It’s certainly a calming video.

Q? Should you add any input protection when interfacing an analog voltage to a ADC? Can you just connect the analog voltage to the ADC? What is good practice please??
Q: Do we get to see Ladyada’s Kzinti telepath impression with the fleece hoodie? 😺
Q: What is the best way debug an audible "humming" when a circuit is under load? I've built up a custom PCB and when it's powered it's got a humm, but so far as I can tell that doesn't happen on the breadboard. Other than the hum everything works as expected.
I was JUST going to ask if there was a manicure budget so thanks for anticipating that
Question: Of the mcus available on Adafruit boards, which is best for a decently real-time audio spectrum analysis to rended in colorful neopixel matrix? M4 with hardware float?
Question for the show:
As you know with antenna transmission height matters. I am in a condo and under HOA rules. Any tips on trying to educate my property management on LoRa radio and getting a roof top antenna approval?
Seems possible with the ”OTARD law” or (Over-the-Air Reception Devices) that is governed by the FCC and prevents HOAs from restricting
@open girder
I appreciated the coordination between your question and username
Great question! I live in a tall building in Minneapolis and this is something I'm curious about as well, given that I've got a few LoRA projects on my plate for mid summer or so
I remember those Sony Mavicas!
Q: (might take too long) - Limor changed how the USB/BAT lines work a bit ago.. can she explain why she moved to the FET and how it works? I keep looking for resistors but it seems to work great
A QTPy with WiFi! 😻
yeah!
Buttons are always great
Is it a QTFi?
"moar better!"
Not having buttons really pushes my buttons.
Q: will the QT Py allow you to make one with the S3 when it comes out?
Is that QT-Py ESP32-S2 the smallest wifi-enabled microcontroller board ever?
Hi Lady Ada.
3.5 years ago, I started coding with the Playground Express. Now, I work as a software engineer at Facebook 🙂 I just wanted to come back and say thank you. When I was starting out, your tutorials were the only thing I could read, everything else was too complex. I might have given up without them.
@ionic garnet @desert orbit The Desk of Ladyada on that was super interesting. I think it’s a 4-layer
I want some!
Ada is totally peaking her mic
QUESTION: Can you perform the over-bluetooth functions of pyleap from a computer? (linux)
ooooh, that is a really good pink
Thank you on the cortex-M4. I have 4 different Adafruit including new itsybitsy just ordered tonight
lots of clipping @open girder . But she should be confrontational
YES! Stick that little antenna straight out. Put a little rainbow flag on it for good measure. Should make the HOA board real angry.
@noble grove yes, I think so? https://circuitpython.org/connect/ -> code.circuitpython.org
PSA:eating QTPY boards is not recommended.
We don't recommend eating QTpys (or any other circuit boards) -- regardless of chewing or not chewing them.

thanks very much all, I appreciate you all coming out to the show and for all you do!
will be missing @rapid hornet 's deep dive today - but just ran across ( from embedded.fm ) this Raspberry Pi Pico Emulator for the Wokwi Simulation Platform. It blinks, runs Arduino code, and even the MicroPython REPL! ( https://github.com/wokwi/rp2040js )
Haven't dug in further to see if it works with CP also
for example https://wokwi.com/arduino/projects/300504213470839309
is there a deep dive today?
Watching that last few minutes of last weeks dive - I would say not
I see, thanks
Scott is out the rest of the Friday's this year. Tentatively the next Deep Dive is in January. I am going to stream for a bit tonight during the normal Deep Dive time though if folks are interested in similar (albeit not quite as deep) content.
@smoky island hiya. How do I find you on YouTube? :- )
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDfd9ZAcB8kpa3pyEQwLXVA I'll post stream links in a moment once I get it running as well.

Hi FoamyGuy and everybody present
beep boop, I sees your face
you nailed it
Love CircuitPython, you guys have done a really good job with it! Sure, there are bugs, but then again, you're supporting how many different hardware platforms and configs? 😄
oh hey
o/ hi all, hope you're well
manufacturer id/product id
the init() reads the values from the chip, you could just print what it reads.
It does work with CircuitPython, and Neopixels! It's pretty great https://wokwi.com/arduino/projects/316012775466861122
I'm not sure the eeprom has a readable manufacturer id.
Check page 10, about halfway down, for 'device id'
Hey @smoky island
Figured out Youtube yet? 🙂
Just soldered up a PCB christmas tree, just need to upload the firmware.
Sure thing!
It's this one - https://github.com/enwi/LED-Christmas-Tree
D1 Mini based, so ESP8266
I had this, called PCB3, for couple of years.
https://twitter.com/JonnyBergdahl/status/1467162914620678148
Xmas times are here. PCB3 by @witnessmenow running firmware by @Fruchti.
I do find it strange that there were no pink LED included for the star though. https://t.co/Gcib4OMPOw
But no WiFi on that, uses an ATtiny.
Swapped out the star for a pink LED 🙂
Yeah, started my holiday now.
@smoky island first line is high-byte of 16-bit address, second line is low-byte of address
You are correct: write time is max 5ms on standard EEPROMs
Nice job! That looks like how an eeprom should function
Why is it called EEPROM if it's not actually Read Only?
I believe it's because it's a type of ROM--read only memory. It's programmable, The EE allows you to 'electronically erase' programmable memory if you need to. Basically it lives in the family of ROM devices, is a type of PROM and is specifically an EEPROM. This is different to RAM, and that family of memory types. EEPROMs also have a limited lifespan of writes if I recall correctly before you can expect to see degradation
But it's by definition not read only haha
Firmware is not behaving, probably need to troublehoot my soldering.... 😬
It's an old name and it got its name following the family of memory architectures it was most similar to (where it's completely different in design from the RAM family) as more features got tacked on, ROM->PROM->EPROM->EEPROM it has gotten more distant from it's original namesake, but that's the path it's taken so it inherits it's namesake. This is really stretching my memory of these from my old courses so I'm prone to some mistakes here as well, so take it with a grain of salt
It does blink. 🙂
That's a cool part of comp sci and ee, you don't need coursework to figure it out, and coursework doesn't always help. There's so many paths to making things work, and they're all valid
if you do blow it up and need EEPROMs quick, Amazon has them lol
unlikely you will blow it up tho
That makes sense, I figured it was a historical name. Just a bugaboo of mine.
EEPROM was a big step up from having to stick chips under UV to clear the EPROM
but the clear windows were cool
Thanks, nice stream
Really nice job! Thanks for the stream!
Thank you @smoky island for the excellent stream. Wish Y'all a fine weekend

Hello.
Watching the batteries go flat.
I made a battery charge monitor with an M0 express and an OLED display.
Two rectangles, that's all I need. 😄
So I wanted to watch yesterday recording as I have at least two Adafruit stuff that do eeprom and not supported in CircuitPython: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5146 and https://www.adafruit.com/product/4701 ... did you succeed yesterday?
If you want to store calibration values, MAC addresses, non-secure access tokens, or other unique identifiers, EEPROM storage is a great option. EEPROM is long lasting, and doesn't need ...
This RFID tag is really unique: it works with mobile phones just like other RFID tags, but you can reprogram it over I2C. The tag shows up as an ISO/IEC 15693 (13.56MHz) chip which is ...
I cannot follow LIVE and the recording simultaneously... Haaa
It has an eeprom, but maybe not the only feature.
Perfect!
There was also eeprom stuff in the seesaw: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3657
Maybe emulation or something.
1 x EEPROM with 64 byte of NVM memory
Sorry for disturbing current LIVE, I will watch the past. 🙂
I was concerned with your 50 byte eeprom, but I saw that you figured it out later.
LIVE report from me searching my stock... I found the old seesaw and the new seesaw: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5233 and that one also has an eeprom: 1 x EEPROM with 127 byte of NVM memory (handy for storing small access tokens or MAC addresses) - last byte of EEPROM is used for I2C address selection
This breakout board is a "three in one" product:The ATtiny817 is part of the 'next gen' of AVR microcontrollers, and now we have a cute development/breakout board for it, ...
What would it take to support GENERIC_X86?
elif chip_id==ap_chip.GENERIC_X86:
pass
What if you're running blinka with say an MCP2221?
I wonder if you could do the pygame displayio while using the MCP2221?
I have a question about yesterday... Library file is adafruit_24lc32.py but exemple import adafruit_eeprom
Ok, I change and open an issue. 🙂
TODAY: You have MCP2221 and FT232H that give "pins" to any computer. But it does not mean x86, could be something else.
Not sure what the question from @spice rock is.
Looks like you have to have the breakout board installed. You can't trick blinka into using a board that is not installed.
...since it doesn't like GENERIC_X86 try running with BLINKA_MCP2221.
but you have to have the actual device attached.
Is there MCP and FT232 in that file?
I only have one and it's running the pi zero 2w.
I'm on windows, the chip_id is None.
I'm just trying import microcontroller (blinka 6.10.0)
No f strings on M0. :sigh:
Thanks all 👋
Thanks. Have a nice holiday!
@open girder please make a usb-c male breakout board.
Update! Battery pack works great on a plane.
After the livestream I added the enable switch to the PowerBoost, and stretched the 3/4” heat shrink to fit over the whole shebang.

I actually have a pending digikey order this week: my garage door opener has some 1w resistors that went open, so replacing with 2w. Anything else cool I should add to my cart before ordering? Already have 10k resistor arrays and 0 ohm resistors in the cart
Thanks everybody, have a good week!
👍
that scorpio feather sounds awesome, i love me some rp2040 and some neopixely goodness, so having eight channels of level-shifted outputs is going to make for some nice stuff
already got a project that makes use of several different neopixel strings and is in need of an overhaul to make the whole system more modular and one of those would fit perfectly as the control module for all the lighting
I cannot offer you a discount, but here is Dexter's Pick of the Week: 20-pin 0.1" Female Headers - Rainbow Color Mix - 5 pack https://www.adafruit.com/product/4160
Hint: buy in multiples of two. Then your FeatherWing Doubler https://www.adafruit.com/product/2890 will look amazing.
To use the headers with a Feather(Wing) you need to trim them to 12 and 16 pins. Remove pin 13 or 17, then use a craft knife to cut the plastic.
This has been Dexter's Pick of the Week.
that IS a great idea

don't leave it around your food so you don't accidently eat it
i love the trinket form factor... but the qtpy form factor is rapidly becoming my favorite 😻
Wow that is impressive for a Wi-Fi board that runs CircuitPython
Does the BME280 run hot on the ESP32-S2 feather? The AHT20 on the funhouse tends to run 5 degrees C higher than an offboard temperature sensor.
@grand tusk yeah, it does.
It does pick up heat from the board/CPU yeah, lots of discussion on that in the circuitpython-dev chat back when it came out. one solution is to use sleep timers to wake up, take a temp measurement before board heats up, then ship data and sleep (for sensor implementations)
ah okay
ORDERED 2
ya a QtPy with wifi is so cool
@grand tusk the guide says ...
The temperatures reported by the BME280 when the Feather has been running for a period of time, or when charging a LiPoly battery, may be upwards of 15 degrees Fahrenheit higher than ambient temperature due to the heat produced by the ESP32-S2 module and the charging circuitry. If you require running the board, charging the battery and accurate temperature values, consider switching to a STEMMA QT connected external temperature sensor.
and forgot the discount code as usual but happy to give you the extra money
Question @open girder
QT Py ESP32-S2 design questions
The learn guide says up to 6v, can you use 4 AA or AAA batteries? Or stick to 3 batteries since new batteries output a little over 1.6 each
another option (which I think pimoroni uses in their libs for their sense hat boards) is to attempt to compensate by looking at the cpu temp
@open girder Will you please have as happy as a holiday season as possible?
do you have a usb-c male breakout board?
@digital crescent not at this time
I agree PT. What's the challenge if you are not battle scarred?
I want that test jig!
ESP32-s2 feather?
I wrote over half of Jibo's manufacturing test code. So I appreciate clever test methods.
Try Digi-Key for now
@lilac tusk there's more than one of everything. 😀
Moar pink PCBs!
My own ESP32-S2 feather design came probably a few hours before Adafruit announced they were finally making theirs
PURPS
It’s a point if hilarity for me
@open girder will that be a vertical stemma qt on the scorpio?
NEED
yay for buffered outputs and PIO!
Question it’s so neat you show the boards you make to test new upcoming products… can you share how long in general those take to code and hardware design?
I've been adding 74AHCT125 to all my projects that need 5v o this is much easier
Yep, with CircuitPython you can often get started with half a page of code. With Pi, a lot of initial effort is just getting the OS, GPIOs, I2C, SPI, etc running.
W T F? THat's ridiculous that they don't highlight
Totally agree on the recommendation to use Circuit Python Express. I'd suggest the Bluefruit version
(And I enjoy working with pi, CP, and Arduino.)

What are you doing these days? I’m on a break between gigs.
I'm CTO of Waverley Software. They are an outsourcing firm I used for 7 years as a customer first at Jibo and then the next startup. Through Waverley I am also fractional CTO of computational linguistic company
It may be my favorite job ever and I've had some amazing jobs
Instead of working on one product or at one company, I help hundreds of projects at some level. Some I get very involved in. I have teams of people in Vietnam, Ukraine, Latin America and other technology rich locations. We deliver quality results to our customers. we do that by finding the best devs and project managers in the world
But someday we should have a talk about all my jobs. It reads like dramatic fiction but it's all real and well documented!!!

Awesome. We need a storytelling show.
I sometimes wonder over to general and tell one of the stories. I've got hundreds
Maybe you’ve Already done so, but you’d be a good guest on Embedded FM podcast.
That would be good. I have my own tiny podcast on Apple and others of pretty nerdy stuff in completely unconventional format. It's under my name Rich Sadowsky
but I agree one here would be cool

I think you're current approach is a better solution

so you are sending a "pin" message over serial to do that?

😆 I didn't see it either, but hopefully it means it works with ease now 😄
😄 Whoop Whoop!
WHOOP WHOOP
That's so awesome
the discord chat is blocking the led
do you have the circuit python code checked into your github repo?
a more isolated thing to debug at least with that
rather than some 'mysterious server and java communication magic'
This such a great amount of progress
/daylock true might be the way to keep it day
thanks for streaming @smoky island have a good new year
wait is this the java version?
Very cool integration with great potential. Excellent progress.
that might not be the command (I googled freezing day cycle and I think that command isn't supported? No idea)
but it should be possible to freeze day/night with /some/ command
/gamerule doDaylightCycle false? maybe
This is very awesome progress on this build! The interactivity is so cool to see!
Well thank you for the new years eve stream! Have a great evening, and a great start to the new year!
Thank you!
Streaming for a bit today, picking up where I left off on the Minecraft / Feather integration. You can follow along on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmaMvDAF_f8 or Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
Happy New Year! This is a cool project.
Have you considered using the second USB serial channel?
Yeah, console and data channels.
I think you have to enable it in boot.py.
You will need a new Serial object for the data channel.
Use usb_cdc.data as the serial port.
[afk]
nice work!
🎉
for (String command: incomingCommands) {...}
Not crashing is a good attribute.
The torch is pulling the redstone high.
The switch and the torch should not be on the same Y level.
🎉🎉
Now you need a solenoid in a piston costume.
Sticky piston or a sand block.
thank you!

Desk of Ladyada - Full Time Floppy Fun! https://youtu.be/1LceABqUsLs
The week between Christmas and New Years is usually a time when we get to play with some new technology since a lot of people are out and many meetings are postponed. but this year we played with some old technology! we tried hooking up a 3.5" floppy drive to a microcontroller to see if we can read data from it. we learned a lot about floppy i...
yay!
💾
Hi folks!
You aren't supposed to put electronics in landfills anyway. So recycle!
great. Now I'll have to get a floppy disk! Probably have one in an old dead laptop or desktop...
yah (pt here) we're getting a bunch of hate-tweets and hate-mail saying this is a waste of time, meanwhile millions of disks of computing history are rotting away and no one can access them, so we're gonna just keep at it and release open-source software and hardware to access, read/write/image any form of media
for $4 with a pico can access a floppy drive, that is amazing i think
People will always whine
yerp
they should try being positive and encouraging. They may find they enjoy life more by encouraging people to do their own thing
I flinch internally every time she pat's the drive... Old habits die hard.
I worked on disk drivers back in the 80s in Z80 and 8088 assembly. Don't remember any details other than debugging was an endeavor
...Head alignments
I learned back then to stick with known suppliers for both the drives and the media. I often bought Panasonic drives
never saw that coming.
whoa. were they that loud back then?
Yup
Louder!
.... I miss that sound
yikes. I don't remember that
It is a comforting sound
Until it would go ahhhh, ahhhh, ahhhh, and then error out
Well just try again
love the colored wires
So does the floppy show up as a readable drive when you plug in the pico?
the world needs more color
Don't know yet.
very cool Limor
Ah, so many memories!
I remember the videos of ppl hacking them to play music. Maybe more ppl will use those drives to make art
cute Phil
yah, it was almost the hackaday logo
Here's what polish AGH University of Science and Technology do in their free time. My another useless device - Imperial March played by two floppy disk drives.

Those Apple drives bring back fond memories
Nice! I feel like this could power new floppotron-esque projects!
the Disk II
🇸🇪 👋
We should calculate the relative value of using floppy removable media for things like Adalogger use cases.
I had that commodore drive on the bottom
Maybe it makes more sense than SD cards
I used my C64 with cassette tape then jumped to Apple IIe before going to floppies
The 1541 drive would keep your coffee warm.
now that I remember
The 1541 drive has it's own 6502 to control the drive.
Hmm, with the right protocol you should be able to talk to the 1541 drive.
I can see the parody video now, "Tired of losing those tiny SD cards, copy it to a floppy!"
Talking to the 1541 should be quite easy. Uses some serial interface/protocol
well still might be better than relying on transferring it through the "cloud"
The newest trend in storage: Floppy disks. More value, less, cost, decreased loss of media...
OK searching for floppy disk on DIgi-Key...
Don't know how many times the connection gave up on me
Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tape.
One product I worked on, Symantec C++, shipped one SKU with 18 floppies
Or a CD or two
everyone complains about the ☁️ but we're doing something about it 🙂 💾
Phhhht!
Instead of sneakernet that's tirenet
Trying to find my "Golden Master" of that Symantec product. Not sure where I put it. Golden Masters were special runs from manufacturing made for the product team. I believe I have one for the floppy SKU somewhere. Finding other great products I worked on like Norton AntiVirus, but not Symantec C++ or Visual Cafe
ah, the Rumpelstiltskin effect
I remember using a Norton(?) diskutils floppy to change the root password on a Linux box a person in my dorm had just purchased from some random guy, my neighbor didn't get the root password and it was back in '97 before everyone used shadow(?) password files.
@open girder PT was thinking about your comment about people hating on you for doing the floppy R&D. What ever happened to the spirit of wonder and discovery that led us all down this career path?
probably Norton Utilities. Worked on that one too
But we had other products too through acquisition.
@ionic garnet gatekeepin
I even have a patent (now expired I suspect) on a way to recovery from crashes in Windows after software installation.
On Norton Utilities
limor got a lot of mean folks in the avr freaks forum back in the day too
however, she kept going, and now we have adafruit
@open girder any advice for someone interested in learning about obscure electromechanical components? Looking for alternatives to slip rings and low power servos.
@ionic garnet i also think a lot of people are sad, in pain, and having a rough time and they express it by being mean to women online
@spiral bough will get to that in sec! good question!
Not really limited to women though. I got my head bit off in electronics forums when I was a newbie.
yerp
@clever summit the good news is, we have a great code of conduct and that will not ever happen to new folks in the adafruit community
so, as bad as that all was, we found a better way forward together 🙂
No doubt. I try to tune that stuff out. I got caught up in trying to defend Jibo after we went under. I was there from beginning to end and the people involved were sincere, brilliant, with good intentions to make a positive impact. Numerous factors led to our demise, most our own fault, but that doesn't mean we set out to con people. I tried to defend us in a few social network chats and ended up just leaving the chats
Yep, your community is rock solid.
I really dislike meanness.
Love the Mudge Mustang story!
We should all encourage women, minority owned business, STEM girls, boys, other... Society suffers by not accepting the wisdom of diversity
Its a small world after all🎶
When I worked with two Assoc MIT professors who were women and each started a Boston startup, many men asked me "how can you work for a women?" I would just reply: "why do you work for men?" I was floored by the question. Roz Picard and Cynthia Breazeal were both amazing, compassionate, gifted women and I was honored to work for and with them.
Thanks @open girder and good night. Happy New Year! 🌑
thanks all!
Thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you! have a great evening!
@spiral bough hang out for a sec, limor is going to reply here!
That's some nice lo tech bleeps and bloops
🐰
Cool, thanks!
@spiral bough hiya best place to learn about this stuff right now is probably robotics and/or 'battlebots' type groups
like FIRST robotics and alike
they are gonna be doing the most and are learning a lot together!
Now that floppies are back I'm banking on the return of modems! 300 baud FTW! ☎️
Punch card readers.
Thanks a ton! I'll look into it!
i took some photos and vid with our floppy based sony mavica too, i'll post on twitter in a few! it's the first desk of ladyada stored on floppy! 💾 📸 🐇
unsurprisingly there was no ready-made emoji for punch cards
Happy New Year everyone. I have a feeling 2022 is going to be a better year for all of us.
A great boss is a wonderfully thing
It's the most important thing. I've been an exec for 20 years and the most important thing is my relationship with CEO. I have been managing people for a LONG time and try to be the most encouraging boss. Kindness and respect go a long way. Encouraging people helps them take risks and outperform their own expectations. I love being a leader as much as I love being a follower.
Tech workers have a lot of choice in where they work. We all can't be Google or FB and pay sickening salaries. But we can be good to people and help people grow and stretch and have fun doing it. Never forget the "have fun" part.
off to watch football and do some soldering
catch you all soon.
I might tell a quick story about a floppy disk incident from a major software company that I worked for in General channel
Also maybe robocup teams, especially the small and medium sized leagues: https://www.robocup.org
Thanks, I'll add that to my research!

ATtin817?
I also see this, so ATtin817 instead of ATtiny817 might be intentional
